Student nurses' experiences of remote learning during Covid-19 pandemic: A qualitative evidence synthesis.

To systematically synthesize undergraduate student nurses' experience of online, blended or distance learning during Covid-19 pandemic. A qualitative evidence synthesis (QES). A QES. Themes were organized using the 'best fit' framework approach. Methodological limitations and confidence in the review findings were informed by GRADE-CERQual (Confidence in the Evidence from Reviews of Qualitative research). Qualitative literature from five databases including CINAHL, PubMed, Medline, Education Full Text (H.W. Wilson) and ERIC were searched from March 2020 to November 2021. Nine qualitative and two mixed method studies were included in this 'best fit' framework using Chickering and Gamson's Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education. Importance of the social presence of the teacher through effective communication and interpersonal relationships is highlighted. Clinical placement and in-person practical skills training are needed for effective nursing education. This review highlighted that online content can be developed into efficient and high-quality learner-centred education within blended undergraduate nursing programmes incorporating essential face-to-face and practical components. Various supporting measures are required for both students and faculty. We suggest an adaptation of a 'Blending with Purpose: The Multimodal Model' with key considerations for undergraduate nursing programmes where pedagogical objectives and activities drive the approaches to achieve intended learning outcomes and student satisfaction. Well-designed online programmes using digital tools that support interaction and teamwork are required for undergraduate nursing education. Blended learning approaches offer more flexibility than online learning alone which leads to improved student engagement. Clinical placement and in-person practical skills training are needed for effective nursing education. Athletics is Education

While participation in intercollegiate athletics has historically been classified as extracurricular, sports have the potential to serve as an educational avenue in postsecondary institutions if reframed through a higher education lens. Through a synthesis of research on traditional college students’ and athletes’ educational experiences, the current article highlights the unique nexus of higher education and Division I intercollegiate athletics by extending Chickering and Gamson’s (1987) seven principles for good practice in undergraduate education to intercollegiate athletics. First, the Seven Principles are briefly presented in their original form relating to the traditional higher education environment: (1) encourage contact between students and faculty, (2) develop reciprocity and cooperation among students, (3) encourage active learning, (4) give prompt feedback, (5) emphasize time on task, (6) communicate high expectations, and (7) respect diverse talents and ways of learning. Next, these factors are reconsidered and applied to the educational development of Division I intercollegiate athletes. Finally, implications of applying this framework and further integrating the educational components of collegiate sport to cultivate improved experiences for athletes are provided.

How to Create, Maintain, and Reinforce Students’ Motivation and Engagement in Online Education: A Discussion

Online (virtual) education is a teaching and learning method selected by many institutions, including Eastern International University (EIU), to overcome the lockdown and curfew periods during the Covid-19 pandemic. In this knowledge transferring mode, maintaining students’ engagement and motivation is the concern of lectures and school administrators. This study discusses the origin, advantages, and disadvantages of online teaching, compared with on-campus face-to-face education. Also, using the results of a student survey conducted by the Student Services Office, this study highlights some serious issues related to online education in the Becamex Business School at Eastern International University, including poor internet connection, lack of interaction between lecturers and students, external noises, and students’ insufficient attention to the lectures. Then, this study proposes four solutions to remedy these problems: (1) student-friendly or familiar examples, (2) technology-aided teaching methods, (3) project-based assessment, and (4) seven principles for good practice in undergraduate education.

Agreement between Students’ and Their Instructors’ Perceived Use of Good Practices in Undergraduate Education: Self-Reflections in Developmental Mathematics Classrooms

Best practices in undergraduate classrooms have been identified. However research on the congruence between practices of faculty members and their students is lacking. In this study, confidence intervals were used as a mechanism to compare responses of three developmental mathematics instructors and their students on a subset of items from the Seven Principles Faculty and Student Inventories. Patterns observed in the confidence intervals indicated that, among the items studied, (a) there were consistent behaviors among students across classes and (b) students’ and instructors’ perceptions were not in agreement on several items. Future studies could compare all items or conduct observations to measure congruency.

Pedagogies and practice: online teaching during COVID-19

At this pandemic situation worldwide, most of the Universities are offering online teaching as an alternative of face-to-face study through Technology-enhanced learning (TEL). To ensure pedagogies and practice for online teaching, we have chosen and critically analyzed the theory “Seven principles for good practice in undergraduate education” by Chickering and Gamson for effective online teaching that researchers highly appreciated. Based on two case studies of two different UK universities and research review, we have also proposed recommendations to implement these seven good practices for online teaching. We have realized that there should be different group discussion forums like café, forums, a conference to engage students to share their ideas, justify their ideas with reliable sources, and finally, reflective thinking and writing, which is essential for learning. Wiki is a good example for group working where everybody shares their ideas about Seven Principles of good practices, then we moderated poster contents and finally prepared the poster the product of knowledge.

Seven principles for good practice in midterm student feedback

ABSTRACT Midterm student feedback is a common process in post-secondary institutions that can lead to enhanced teaching practices and thereby potentially to higher ratings of instructional skills in summative course evaluations. At McMaster University, midterm student feedback is called a ‘Course Refinement’ and includes consultation with educational developers. As part of a multiphase study investigating teachers’ perceptions of the Course Refinement process and its impact, this analysis presents effective attributes of the process as an adaptation of Chickering and Gamson’s well-known ‘seven principles for good practice in undergraduate education’, as our findings align with their work. To our knowledge, this marks the first educational development adaptation of the ‘seven principles’.

Blended Learning as a Good Practice in ESL Courses Compared to F2F Learning and Online Learning

Blended learning has been studied for many years. However, it is necessary to assess whether blended learning is a good practice as opposed to face-to-face and online learning. Based on the Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education, a questionnaire was designed to compare blended learning in seven dimensions to traditional and online learning. A total of 653 students participated in the research. Independent T-test, paired T-test and ANCOVA were conducted using SPSS. The results showed that blended learning was reported to have a higher effectiveness than traditional learning for all seven principles and a higher effectiveness than online learning for most of the principles. Learning modes had a significant effect on student perceptions on most of the principles. Gender had significant effect on student perception of all seven principles, while year of study and knowledge domain did not show significant effects on most of the principles. Possible reasons for these findings are discussed.

The present article aims at providing some empirical evidence on the important role student engagement plays in responding to student needs and in enhancing the quality of the teaching and learning environment in Moroccan universities. Student engagement happens at many levels that correspond to the “principles of good practice in undergraduate education” that were suggested by Chickering and Gamson (1987). This article tries to identify these aspects of student engagement and good practice in the English Studies Track (EST) program from the EST students’ perspective. The data were collected in three Moroccan universities: Abdelmalek Essaadi University in Tetouan, Ibn Tofail University in Kenitra, and Cadi Ayad University in Marrakech. An adapted version of Student Engagement Questionnaire (Kember, Leung & McNaught, 2005 in Kember & Leung, 2009) was administered to 883 EST students. The data were submitted to a statistical analysis of frequencies using SPSS. The results of this study show that EST students experience a low level of engagement with their studies and that the EST program lacks some aspects of “good practice” in higher education. This study can help enhance the quality of university programs as it reveals some gaps and negative practices that need to be taken into account in the reform process Moroccan universities are going through. Another implication of this research is that students are aware of their needs and, hence, are able to provide useful feedback that can be used to improve the quality of the teaching and learning environment in Moroccan universities.

BEST ONLINE INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICES: REPORT OF PHASE I OF AN ONGOING STUDY

This study examines how best practices in online instruction are the same as, or different from, best practices in face-to-face (F2F) instruction. The book Effectiveness and Efficiency in Higher Education for Adults summarizes some 20 years of research on best practices in F2F instruction. The bases of comparison are principles from the KS&G material and from Chickering and Gamson’s “seven principles for good practice in undergraduate education”. A reason for making these comparisons is that the rapid growth of online instruction promises that online instruction may become the largest source of ongoing higher education. Not surprisingly, interest in assessing the quality of online offerings has also grown. The question is increasingly raised: Are postsecondary institutions effectively “doing their old job in a new way?”. One way to answer that question is to analyze the online instructional practices of faculty with the aid of research on patterns of instruction, face-to-face and online. Instructional Practices in Developmental Mathematics: A Multilevel Analysis of Community College Student Perceptions

In the current study, we explored the relationship between community college students’ assessments of their developmental mathematics instructors’ practices and mathematics course grades. Using a sample of 375 developmental mathematics students, we examined ratings of their instructors on four autonomy-supportive practices, recommended as principles of good practice in undergraduate education: providing prompt feedback, addressing diverse ways of learning, providing real-life situations, and relating the subject matter to outside events. Using multilevel modeling and controlling for student and teacher background variables, we found that providing prompt feedback was the only statistically significant predictor of mathematics achievement among other student-perceived instructional strategies. Implications for research and practice regarding developmental mathematics teaching strategies are discussed.

An analysis of undergraduate level flipped courses based on the seven principles: a case study

The concepts of implementing the flipped classroom approach are fundamentally the same across different disciplines, yet many teachers still consider it too difficult to switch from the traditional lecture mode to the flipped classroom approach due to the lack of a practical model. This paper mainly evaluates five different technological courses that adopted the flipped classroom approach for one semester in The University of Hong Kong based on the 'Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education' proposed by Chickering and Gamson in 1987. Good principle-guided practices from these five courses are summarised. It is aimed that the findings of this paper will motivate on-campus teachers to adopt the flipped classroom approach.

Students’ achievement and opinions on the implementation of e-learning for phonetics and phonology lectures at Airlangga University

Abstract The demand of e-learning at higher education has increased significantly in the past several years. In Indonesia, the implementation of e-learning has been encouraged by the government since 2011. However, universities are still looking for the most appropriate e-learning system, and unsure of the effectiveness of e-learning program. This paper discusses the implementation of e-learning system at Airlangga University, one of the top five state-owned universities in Indonesia. The e-learning system implemented in this university follows the Seven Principles of Good Practice in Undergraduate Education, i.e. encourage contacts between student and faculty; develop reciprocity and cooperation among students; use active learning techniques; give prompt feedback; emphasize time on task; communicate high expectations; and respect diverse talents and ways of learning. The e-learning platform at this university is called AULA (Airlangga University e-Learning Application). The respondents of this study were the students who took the General Linguistics course, particularly for the lectures on Phonetics and Phonology. Based on the t-test calculation of the exam scores, we conclude that there is no significant difference between the results of the e-learning and those of the classroom learning. The results of questionnaires show that 85% of the students are satisfied with the implementation of e-learning as they think that the e-learning makes it easier for them to understand the materials, it is fun, and is convenient to access. For further implementation, the students suggested the additions of podcasts and games, more time for the quizzes, and improvement of the e-learning platform.

Education is the Only Business Where the Customer is Satisfied with Less of the Product.

Faculty members need to be vigilant to avoid a slide toward decreased efforts in the classroom. The demand for “good teaching” may not come from the students in the class, who have many activities taking up their time and are often satisfied with a course that makes minimal demands; however, even tenured faculty members should strive for higher standards, including maintaining high expectations of the students. One of the seven principles for good practice in undergraduate education, as espoused by Chickering and Gamson, is “communicates high expectations” (1); that is, students tend to put in the effort necessary to meet expectations, so it makes sense to set a high bar for performance, even though it may take extra work on the part of the instructor.

Evaluation Instruments and Good Practices in Online Education

Chickering and Gamson’s (1987) Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education offers extensively researched and validated tenets for best practices in higher education. After a review of the literature, twenty-eight evaluation instruments currently used to design and review online courses in higher education institutions were collected and divided into categories, based on geographical reach and the type of institution for which they were developed. This study investigates how evaluation instruments used in higher education assess the Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education, and what other items are addressed in the evaluation of courses. Findings show that national and statewide evaluation instruments were less institute specific and more closely aligned to the principles of good practice, and that evaluation instruments often measure extraneous items (e.g., student services, navigation, resources, or institutional support). Additional findings and conclusions based on the analysis of the instruments are discussed.

Faculty use of Twitter in higher education teaching

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to determine how higher education teachers are using Twitter in their classroom to engage, educate, and inform students. The results were measured against Chickering and Gamson (1987) “Seven principles for good practice in undergraduate education.”Design/methodology/approachA survey was sent to college and university educators throughout the country who were identified as teachers who use Twitter in their classroom. These educators were asked about their Twitter use, their opinions of Twitter, the impact the social network has had on student learning, the students’ reactions to using Twitter, and how Twitter supported pedagogical best practices, including the “Seven principles for good practice in undergraduate education”.FindingsThe educators reported that student response to using Twitter in the classroom was overwhelmingly positive and that Twitter has positively impacted student learning. The results also indicate that college educators consider that Twitter use in classes does support the seven principles.Research limitations/implicationsWhile college instructors from a wide range of institutions, locations, subject types, and experience levels were surveyed, a limitation is that only their opinions are being examined. Future research may wish to examine the Twitter accounts of these professors to determine if they are using Twitter in the manner that they think they are. Results from the survey could then be compared with the tweet content.Originality/valueWhile previous research has examined how students use and appreciate Twitter in the classroom, this is one of the first studies to examine how the social network is implemented from an instructor viewpoint. The results demonstrate value to instructors. For instructors, the value lies in the knowledge that Twitter has had a positive impact on classroom success for students and that using the social network promotes best practices in pedagogy, supporting constructivism, experiential learning, and the “Seven principles for good practice in undergraduate education”. For administrators, the value lies in the fact that many instructors have had success using Twitter and that more should be encouraged to do the same in their classrooms.

Sales Simulation Games

This study combines the perspective of students ( n = 137) and sales instructors ( n = 248). It compares how well selling and sales management simulation games, case discussions, and traditional lectures are perceived to conform to the seven principles for good practice in undergraduate education. The study further compares each method’s performance on perceived learning outcomes. Differences between instructors who adopted a simulation game and nonadopters are investigated. Finally, we investigate the reasons why some instructors adopt and others choose not to adopt simulation games for their selling and sales management classes. We find that students consider simulation games more fun, but less useful than lectures, and about equally useful as case discussion. Computerized simulation games are less frequently used in sales education than in other business disciplines. The perceived lack of suitable games is the main reason why instructors do not adopt simulation games for sales education. Contrary to earlier speculation, prior professional work experience of the instructor is unrelated to simulation game adoption, and years of teaching experience is positively related to the use of simulation games.

Practical Teaching Aids for Online Classes

The seven principles for good practice in undergraduate education, developed by Arthur Chickering and Zelda Gamson, will be reviewed. The use of technology, especially web-based online technology, to apply these principles in teaching and learning will be examined; an example of such an implementation in an online computer class will be given together with some very specific teaching aids that can successfully be used in online classes; and further suggestions for successful online teaching will be discussed. Limitations of the study and recommendations for future implementations will be also discussed.

Bridging Student Engagement and Satisfaction: A Comparison between Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Predominantly White Institutions

Over the last 40 years, numerous studies have been conducted on the impacts of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) on African American students. An overwhelming majority of these studies attested to the beneficial academic and developmental effects of HBCUs for African American students (Allen, 1992; Astin, Tsui, & Avalos, 1996; Bonous-Hammarth & Boatsman, 1996; Davis, 1991; Fleming, 1984; Harper et al., 2004; Kim & Conrad, 2006; Roebuck & Murty, 1993; Seifert, Drummond, & Pascarella, 2006). Numerous other studies compared aspects of African American undergraduate experiences at HBCUs and predominantly White institutions (PWIs) and concluded that African American students learned better and were more satisfied at HBCUs than at PWIs (Bohr et al., 1995; Cokley, 1999; DeSousa & Kuh, 1996; Flowers & Pascarella, 1999; Kim & Conrad, 2006; Palmer & Gasman, 2008; Watson & Kuh, 1996).Among these studies, many have addressed the topic of student engagement, and some addressed the issue of student satisfaction, but few focused on the relationships between student engagement and student satisfaction (Outcalt & Skewes-Cox, 2002). Researchers have found that positive student satisfaction is connected with higher student persistence, better word-of-mouth reputation of the institution (Schreiner, 2009), more alumni involvement, and increased financial contributions (Gaier, 2005; Miller & Casebeer, 1990; Monks, 2003), all of which are desirable outcomes of higher education. Therefore, the authors wondered if increasing student engagement would lead to higher student satisfaction at HBCUs, which in turn may lead to the above-mentioned desirable outcomes. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between student engagement and student satisfaction for African Americans who enrolled at HBCUs and PWIs. For the purpose of this study a new method of selecting peer institutions for HBCUs was adapted, which would yield a more comparable group of institutions.LITERATURE REVIEWStudent Engagement and SatisfactionAlexander Astin's (1984, 1985, 1991) theory of student involvement and educational assessment framework-input-environment-outcome (I-E-O) model-provided the foundation and conceptual framework to understand the importance and impact of college student engagement. The last several decades have seen voluminous research in college student development supporting Astin's claim that the time and energy students devote to educationally purposeful activities is one of the best predictors of their learning and personal development in college (Astin, 1993; Carini, Kuh, & Klein, 2006; Kuh et al., 2008; Kuh et al., 2010; Pace, 1980; Pascarella & Terenzini, 1991, 2005). Wolf-Wendel and associates (2009) pointed out that the concept of student engagement actually includes two components. The first component of student engagement is what Astin called student involvement, which is the amount of physical and psychological energy students devote to educational experiences. The second component of student engagement involves how many resources and efforts an institution puts into creating and maintaining a nurturing environment that promotes student involvement (Kuh, 2001). The importance of the second component of student engagement is that institutions that more fully engage their students in educational activities can claim to be of higher quality in comparison with similar types of colleges and universities (Kuh, 2004).Certain institutional practices are known to lead to high levels of student engagement. Assessing student group work: is there a right way to do it?

Many law courses include at least some elements of group work within compulsory or optional modules. The benefits of group work include at least four of the seven “Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education”.1 In addition, employers consistently ask for good team-working skills, evidence of which is often provided by reference to group projects at university. Previous research by the authors2 confirms other reports in the literature that many students find group work difficult, and particularly resent other students “freeloading” from their work.3 They also experience frustration at non-participation by other students and not being able to choose their team mates. This resentment can be exacerbated if all students receive the same mark for the finished project regardless of input. In this article, the authors reflect upon our experiences of setting and grading group work in our own courses and institutions. We will consider different assessment approaches, including peer assessment,4 lecturer assessment, student participation – enhancing student understanding of assessment criteria,5 a mixture of peer and lecturer assessment, assessment of group work as part of a portfolio,6 and non-assessed group work feeding into individual assessments.
