Barriers to infection prevention and control in patients' homes.

While there is a lot of emphasis on the need for good infection prevention and control practices and acute care, the increasing complexity of patients being cared for in their own homes means that there is an increased risk for infection. Good practice is required by community nurses to minimise this risk. Patients' own homes can present particular challenges in complying with good practice and this article looks at some of the barriers to optimum infection prevention and control precautions in this setting.

Descriptive study of COVID-19 vaccinations and infections within an NHS workforce.

Healthcare workers were a priority group for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination during the pandemic. Occupational exposure may account for some of the increased risk faced. Describe COVID-19 vaccine uptake and infection rates in staff across a large NHS board in Scotland to better understand occupational risk during the pandemic. Descriptive cross-sectional study. Demographic data were extracted on 5 August 2021 from 26 058 members of staff. COVID-19 vaccination status and positive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) results were extracted on two separate dates to describe the timeline of staff infections between March 2020 and January 2022. There was high uptake of all three vaccine doses across all demographic groups in hospital staff. PCR positivity decreased with increasing age and Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation score. Staff and nosocomial COVID-19 infections followed peaks in community infection rates. NHS Lothian is a typical NHS workforce with good vaccine uptake. Beyond very early cases, there seems to be minimal evidence of occupational acquisition of COVID-19. The large number of nosocomial infections at the start of the pandemic may, in fact, reflect lack of community testing at this time. Despite protection from high vaccine coverage, job type and good Infection Prevention and Control practices, it seems that staff remain at high risk of catching the highly transmissible omicron variant from the community rather than work.

Fecal Carriage of Carbapenem Resistant Enterobacterales and Associated Factors Among Admitted Patients in Saint Paul's Hospital Millennium Medical College, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The Enterobacterales family colonizes the human gut as normal flora in all age groups, with bacterial infections being the most common cause. Resistance is currently observed in all normal flora. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of fecal carriage of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE), carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE), and associated factors in the faeces of admitted patients. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Saint Paul's Hospital Millennium Medical College, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. A total of 384 rectal swabs were collected from various wards in admitted patients who have consented to participate. The specimens were inoculated on a MacConkey agar plate, and then they were incubated at 37 °C for 18 to 24 hours. Using the BD PhoenixTM M50 compact system identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing were performed. Using the modified carbapenem inactivation method, it was determined whether the carbapenem-resistant bacterial isolate produced carbapenemase or not. Overall prevalence of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales carriage and carbapenemase producing Enterobacterales in admitted patients was 17.2% (95%, Confidence Interval: 13.3-21.1%) and 7% (95%, Confidence Interval: 4.7-9.9%), respectively. The predominate carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales in fecal carriage was K. pneumoniae, 15.4% (23/149), E. cloacae 15.4% (6/39), followed by E. coli 12.4% (37/307) of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) isolate. Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales carriage isolates showed large level of resistance to ciprofloxacin, and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim. Prior intake of antibiotics (Odds Ratio 2.42, 95% CI: 11.186-4.95) was significantly associated with higher carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales carriage. We observed a high prevalence of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales carriage and carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales among admitted patients. There were only amikacin and colistin that could be effective for carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales isolates. Hence, the control of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales carriage should be given priority by carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales screening for fecal of admitted patients, and adhering to good infection prevention practice in hospital settings.

Infection Prevention and Control Practices and Associated Factors Among Healthcare Cleaners in Gondar City: An Analysis of a Cross-Sectional Survey in Ethiopia.

Healthcare-associated infections are a global health problem and are more prevalent in developing countries such as Ethiopia, but there is a paucity of research on the infection prevention practices of cleaning staff. Therefore, this study aimed to assess infection prevention and control practices and associated factors among cleaners working in healthcare facilities in Gondar City, Ethiopia. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among healthcare cleaning staff from May to June 2022. A total of 428 cleaners took part in the survey. Data were collected using a semi-structured interviewer-administered questionnaire. The data were entered into EpiData version 4.6 and analyzed using Stata version 14 software. A multivariable binary logistic regression analysis was used to ascertain the significance of associations at <0.05 p-value and the adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Among the 390 study participants included, 294 (75.1%) were female. Of the surveyed participants, 186 (47.7%) had good knowledge of infection prevention and control practices. This study revealed that out of the 390 healthcare cleaners, 204 (52.3%) had good infection prevention and control practices with 52.3% [95% CI (47.2, 56.4)]. Good knowledge of infection prevention and control [AOR: 1.56, 95% CI (1.03, 2.37)] and the availability of infection prevention and control guidelines in the workplace [AOR: 1.54, 95% CI (1.01, 2.33)] were significant factors associated with infection prevention and control practice. The present study found that almost half of the healthcare cleaners had poor IPC practices. The finding underlines the importance of good IPC knowledge and the accessibility of IPC guidelines to improve IPC practices among healthcare cleaning staff. The findings of this study also highlight that behavioral change interventions and paying attention, particularly to nonclinical staff such as cleaners in health care settings, are critical to reducing infection in health care settings.

Assessment and feedback of the COVID-19 pandemic’s effects on physicians’ day-to-day practices: good knowledge may not predict good behavior

ABSTRACT The importance of doctors’ knowledge and awareness of infectious diseases was felt worldwide during the COVID-19 pandemic. With this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of the long and dynamic pandemic process on resident physicians’ knowledge and protective behaviors for infection control in a tertiary hospital setting and protective behaviors for infection control in a tertiary hospital setting. The population of this cross-sectional study consisted of assistant physicians working at Suleyman Demirel University Faculty of Medicine Training and Research Hospital. A questionnaire evaluating information and protective practices for COVID-19 was applied to the participants through face-to-face interviews using the convenience sampling method, with an interval of one year. In the second year of the pandemic, resident physicians’ awareness of the correct use of personal protective equipment decreased (p = 0.001). Despite the continuous training, it was determined that the residents preferred masks with high protection at a lower rate when they encountered patients who received oxygen support of 5 lt/min and above (p < 0.001). To prevent the spread of COVID-19 infection in the hospital as the pandemic progresses, it has been determined that resident physicians are less prone to evaluate possible infection symptoms in patients hospitalized for non-COVID-19 reasons (p = 0.013). As a result, the data we obtained showed that despite the regular training during the pandemic and the death of many health workers, the residents’ adherence to infection control and prevention practices, which also protect them, decreased significantly in the second year of the pandemic. These valuable data showed us that good knowledge does not predict good infection control and prevention practices. Our findings show that physicians need a new education system that motivates them. In addition, psychosocial determinants, physical and mental fatigue, and institutional control factors contributing to these results and affecting individual risk perception should be recognized and prevented.

Healthcare Professionals' Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Infection Prevention in Southwest Ethiopia.

Infection prevention (IP) is a practical and scientifically supported technique to prevent avoidable infections. The effectiveness of IP techniques applied will depend on the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of healthcare professionals. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of IP and its associated factors among healthcare professionals at Mizan-Tepi University Teaching Hospital (MTUTH) in southwest Ethiopia. A cross-sectional survey was conducted from September 1 and 15, 2021 among 196 healthcare professionals at MTUTH in south-west Ethiopia. The knowledge, attitude and practice outcome variables were measured using 13, 13, and 12 questions respectively. A logistic regression analysis was used. The level of significance was declared at a P < .05. The level of good knowledge, favorable attitude, and good practice of IP were 71.9%, 63.8%, and 53.6% respectively. Being a GP/specialist [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 10.6, 95% CI (2.13-52.9)] and the presence of an IP manual at work [aOR = 3.43, 95% CI (1.33-8.82)] were factors connected with good IP knowledge. The presence of sufficient PPE in the work area [aOR = 2.73, 95% CI (1.36-5.50)] and IP training [aOR = 3.05, 95% CI (1.28-7.29)] were factors associated with a favorable attitude toward IP. Good IP practice was linked to having enough personal protective equipment (PPE) in the workplace [aOR = 3.63, 95% CI (1.71-7.72)] and having good IP knowledge [aOR = 3.08, 95% CI (1.39-6.86)]. The level of KAP of IP among study participants was poor. The provision of adequate PPE, IP manuals and in-service training will help to improve the KAP of healthcare professionals toward IP. Therefore, the hospital management authority and other concerned stakeholders like local NGOs and regional health bureau should provide consistent support to the health professionals in terms of training, resources, and infrastructure to improve and integrate universal precaution in everyday services.

Surgical site infection prevention practice and associated factors among nurses working at public hospitals of the western part of southern nation, nationalities, and peoples' region, Ethiopia: Across-sectional study.

Surgical site infection is a major hazard for surgical patients and compromises their quality of life. Its effect is higher in developing countries compared to developed countries. Most of the studies done in Ethiopia regarding surgical site infection prevention practice on nurses who were not directly exposed to wound care, thus it produces less reliable results. Therefore, we aimed to assess surgical wound infection prevention practice among nurses who are directly involved in the care. To assess surgical site infection prevention practice and associated factors among nurses working at public hospitals in the western part of the southern nation, nationalities, and peoples' regions from March 1-31, 2020. An institutional-based cross-sectional study design was conducted from March 1-31, 2020 among randomly selected 402 study participants. A structured and pretested questionnaire was used. EpiData Version 3.1 and Statistical Package for Social Science Version 20 were used for analysis. Bivariable and multivariable analysis was undertaken and p-value less than 0.05 at a 95% confidence interval was considered statistically significant. The overall good self-reported surgical site infection prevention practice of nurses was 46% (95% CI: 41.3, 50.7). Nurses who were BSc degree (AOR = 2.04; 95% CI: 1.31, 3.18), working in the units having surgical site infection prevention guidelines (AOR = 2.45; 95% CI: 1.34, 4.47), had ever taken infection prevention training (AOR = 2.23; 95% CI: 1.42, 3.49), had good knowledge (AOR = 1.82;95% CI: 1.13, 2.90) and had good attitude (AOR = 2.61;95% CI: 1.67, 4.10) performed good surgical site infection prevention activities as compared to their counterparts. Nurses' surgical site infection prevention practice was found to below. To upgrade nurses' practice the hospitals should develop their surgical site infection prevention guidelines based on WHO recommendations and provide training on it.

INFECTION PREVENTION AND CONTROL PRACTICES AMONG HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS IN LEVEL I HOSPITALS IN RINCONADA

Hospital-associated infections (HAIs) pose a serious problem, threatening the health and safety of patients and healthcare providers and cause substantial morbidity and mortality every year in the different healthcare settings worldwide. Despite the known risk, the ease and transparency of infection prevention and control guidelines, still, non-adherence is evidently observed.&#x0D; The descriptive correlational method was used involving a questionnaire as the main instrument in data gathering. To determine the infection prevention and control practices among healthcare providers in Level I hospitals in Rinconada&#x0D; The majority of the respondents are within the age range of 26 – 35; females and nurses. However, only a few of them have undergone formal continuing education and attended relevant training on IPC. The healthcare providers always practice all components of infection prevention and control along with standard precautions, namely, hand hygiene, use of PPE, and prevention of needlestick and sharp injury. Overall, organizational factors significantly affect healthcare providers’ infection prevention and control practices compared to the individual factors that affect moderately. The healthcare providers’ age, sex, and profession and profile influence the infection prevention and control practices in Level I hospitals in Rinconada.&#x0D; There are good infection prevention and control practices among healthcare providers though they sometimes fail to follow specific measures.

Health Care Workers’ Knowledge, Attitude and Practice on COVID-19 in a Government Hospital, Biratnagar

World Health Organization declared COVID-19 as a global pandemic on 11th March 2020 due to rapid transmission and severity of illness of this fatal virus from the country of origin. This study was conducted to assess the health care workers’ knowledge, attitude and practice on COVID -19 in a government hospital at Biratnagar. A descriptive, cross-sectional research design was used. Census method was adopted for sampling, structured questionnaire was used to collect data among 115 healthcare workers over a period of two months. More than three fourth (78.3%) scored good knowledge, almost all possessed a positive attitude and more than half (62.6%) had good infection prevention practice on COVID-19. However, 52.2% reported that COVID-19 is contagious and only 13.9% identified as a zoonotic disease. Also, it revealed that only 35.7% practiced correct steps of donning PPE, only 27.8% reported proper sequence of doffing PPE and 40.0% followed standard duration for hand washing as per the WHO, CDC guideline. The study highlighted the gap in some specific aspects of knowledge and practice of the healthcare workers that need immediate concern. Adequate provision of periodically updated educational training programmes on COVID-19 and infection prevention practices focusing on PPE might help bridging the gap.

Healthcare providers infection prevention practices and associated factors in community clinics in Bangladesh: A cross-sectional study.

Healthcare associated infections impose serious challenges to safe and high-quality healthcare delivery, and have been closely associated with poor infection prevention practices. Infection prevention practices are poorly studied in Bangladesh, and no previous studies have examined these practices among healthcare providers of community clinics. The study aimed to assess infection prevention practices and associated factors among healthcare providers of community clinics in the rural area of Bangladesh. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 128 community healthcare providers in the Kurigram district of Bangladesh who were identified from 128 community clinics using a stratified random sampling technique. Data were collected between November and December, 2019 via face-to-face survey using a pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire. Only 37.5% community healthcare providers had adequate knowledge on infection prevention measures, and 39.1% had good infection prevention practices. Community healthcare providers with higher education were significantly more likely to have good infection prevention practices, and good infection prevention practices were associated with availability of hand washing facilities, and of soap in community clinic, and adequate knowledge of infection prevention. Implementation of an effective training program regarding infection prevention, along with adequate supply of infection prevention basic resources, and continuous monitoring and supervision are required to improve the currently faltering infection prevention knowledge and practices among community healthcare providers in Bangladesh.

COVID-19 infection prevention practices among a sample of food handlers of food and drink establishments in Ethiopia.

Cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) are increasing at an alarming rate throughout the world, including Ethiopia. Food handlers in food and drink establishments are at high risk of exposure to the virus due to their many daily contacts with customers. Since there is a paucity of evidence about infection prevention practices and associated factors among this high-risk group in Ethiopia including in Dessie City and Kombolcha Town, this study was designed to address this gap. An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 422 food handlers in Dessie City and Kombolcha Town food and drink establishments in July and August 2020. The study participants were selected using a simple random sampling technique. Data were collected by trained data collectors using a pretested structured questionnaire and an on-the-spot observational checklist. Data were entered into EpiData version 4.6 and exported to STATA version 14.0 for data cleaning and analysis. Data were analyzed using bivariable and multivariable logistic regression model at 95% confidence interval (CI). From the bivariable analysis, variables with a p-value <0.25 were retained into multivariable analysis. Finally, variables that had a p-value <0.05 were declared as factors significantly associated with good infection prevention practices of COVID-19 among food handlers. The overall rate of good practice in infection prevention among food handlers was 43.9% (95% CI: 39.2-48.4%). Among the total 401 food handlers, 79.8% had good knowledge and 58.4% had a favorable attitude about COVID-19 infection prevention. Factors significantly associated with good COVID-19 infection prevention practices were: educational status of college or above (AOR = 1.97; 95% CI: 1.32-3.75), food handling work experience greater than five years (AOR = 2.55; 95% CI: 1.43-5.77), availability of written guidelines within the food and drink establishment (AOR = 2.68; 95% CI: 1.52-4.75), and taking training about infection prevention (AOR = 3.26; 95% CI: 1.61-6.61). Our findings showed that around one-third of food handlers had good infection prevention practices. Thus, to reduce COVID-19 transmission, integrated work is urgently needed to further improve food handlers' good practices, knowledge and attitude about infection prevention through providing health education, training and by making written infection prevention guidelines available in food and drink establishments.

COVID \u2013 19 related knowledge and preventive practices early in the outbreak among health care workers in selected public health facilities of Illu aba Bor and Buno Bedelle zones, Southwest Ethiopia

BackgroundNovel-coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) disease is currently a worldwide health risk and public health emergency concern. The virus is transmitted from an infected person to another person through close contact and droplets. Frontline health care workers are the most at risk of infection, and so a WHO interim guidance document was issued by the World Health Organization (WHO) which underscores the importance of proper sanitation and waste management practices for COVID- 19 in health-care settings. This study aimed at assessing knowledge and preventive practices towards Covid-19 among health care providers in selected health facilities of Illu Aba Bor and Buno Bedele zones, Southwest Ethiopia.MethodsAn institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted from April to May 2020 among 330 health workers in selected health facilities of Illu Aba Bor and Buno-Bedelle Zones, Southwest Ethiopia. Data were collected using a self-administered structured questionnaire. The collected data were entered into Epidata version 3.1 and exported to SPSS version 23 for analysis. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to identify independent predictors of preventive practices towards Covid-19. Statistical significance was declared at a p-value of < 0.05.ResultThe majority of respondents (93.3%) demonstrated good knowledge of COVID-19, and the mean (SD) knowledge score was 9.04 ± 1.06. Nearly two-thirds (64.2%) of the study participants had good infection prevention practices. Being male (AOR = 3.65, 95% CI: (1.96, 6.80)), education level (AOR = 1.82, 95% CI (1.02, 3.22)), profession (AOR = 3.17, 95% CI (1.08, 9.33)), service year (5–10 years) (AOR = 2.00 (1.02, 3.92)) and more than 10 years (AOR = 3.14 (1.51, 6.52)), availability of personal protective equipment (AOR = 1.96 (1.06, 3.61)) and Knowledge level (AOR = 2.61 (1.48, 4.62)) were independent predictors of COVID-19 preventive practices.ConclusionThe overall level of knowledge of HCWs was good. However, the practice was relatively low. Gender, educational status, profession, year of service, knowledge towards COVID-19, and availability of personal protective equipment were independent predictors of good infection prevention practices. Optimizing the infection prevention and control loop of the health facilities is recommended.

Infections acquired during health-care delivery are a significant public health problem around the world. Thus, infection prevention is not only the most cost-effective option, but also the best strategy to prevent the spread of disease within health facilities. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess infection prevention practices and associated factors among health care workers in governmental health care facilities in South Gondar zone, North West Ethiopia. Methods: Institutional based cross-sectional study design was conducted from 15 February-15 April, 2020 in South Gondar zone among healthcare workers.Multistage was usedas sampling procedures. Data were collected using pre-tested self-administered structured questionnaire. Data were entered and analyzed using Epi-data version 3.1 and SPSS version 23 respectively. The model was fitted using multivariable logistic regression to identify associated factors with infection prevention practices. Odds ration with a 95% confidence interval was used as measure of association. Finally p-value less than 0.05 were used to declare statistical significance. Results: Six hundred two (97%) healthcare workers participated in the study. Three hundred thirty six 60.8%(57.1-64.8%) 95%CI health care workers had good infection prevention practices. Availability of gloves, AOR 3.69(2.015, 6.789)95%CI, Availability Safety box, AOR=1.9(1.2, 3.1)95% CI, Presence of Infection prevention guide line, AOR=0.498(.32, .83) 95% CI, presence of alcohol swab AOR = 0.49(.29, 82)95% CI. Accessibility of hand washing items AOR=2.0(1.2, 3.4) 95% CI were found to be significantly associated. Conclusion: Nearly two-third of the healthcare workers had good infection prevention practices. On infection prevention measures, availability of guide lines, safety box, gloves, alcohol swab, and accessibility of items for hand washings were predictors of good infection prevention practices. To sustain good practices, accessible of hygiene materials should be kept to all units of health facility all times.

Clean and Safe Healthcare Environment: Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice of Infection Prevention and Control among Health Workforce at North Showa Zone Oromiya Region.

Background Infection prevention and control practice (IPCP) is essential for healthcare safety and quality service delivery. The Ethiopian government has already put in place programs and initiatives for clean and safe healthcare facilities. However, in the North Showa Zone of the Oromiya Region, the infection prevention and control practice level was not well understood. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice of infection prevention and control practice among the health workforce (HWF) in North Shoa healthcare facilities (NSHCFs) environment. Methods Healthcare facility-based cross-sectional study design was employed. Structured and pretested self-administered questionnaires were distributed for 373 health workforce. Three hospitals and six health centers were randomly selected, and the study participants were selected by systematic sampling technique. Data were entered into Epi-data version 3.5.2 and then exported to SPSS version 23 for analysis. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to determine the associated factors with infection prevention practice, and a p value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results A total of 361 (96.8%) health workforce responded to self-administered questionnaires. About 55.70% of study participants had good knowledge, 59.3% of them had a positive attitude, and 46.8% had a good infection prevention practice. Age category of 20–29(AOR = 4.08, 95%, CI = (1.97, 8.49)), female participants (AOR = 3.87, 95%, CI = (1.91, 7.86)), single participants (AOR = 3.89, 95%, CI = (1.92, 7.87)), having greater than ten years of working experience (AOR = 3.10, 95% CI = (1.19, 8.10)), positive attitude (AOR = 10.07, 95% CI = (4.82, 21.05)), and availability of water at working area (AOR = 2.27, 95% CI = (1.18, 4.35)) were significantly associated with good infection prevention practice. Conclusion In this study, a significant number of health workers had low knowledge, negative attitudes, and poor infection prevention practices. Female participants, higher work experience, a positive attitude, and water availability in the healthcare facilities were positively associated with infection prevention and control practice. Healthcare facilities should be continued capacitating the health workforce on infection prevention and control measures and equipping health facilities with infection prevention materials.

Knowledge, attitude, practice and psychological response toward COVID-19 among nurses during the COVID-19 outbreak in northern Ethiopia, 2020.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is not only a deadly disease outbreak but also affects the mental status of the population, including nurses. Nurses play a vital role in dealing with individuals with COVID-19. Nurses' infection control measures are affected by their knowledge, attitude, practice and psychological responses towards COVID-19. This study aimed to determine the knowledge, attitude, practice and psychological response among nurses toward the COVID-19 outbreak in northern Ethiopia. A hospital-based cross-sectional study design was employed. The data were collected from March to April 2020. Data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire.The data were entered into Epi-data manager version 4.2 and exported to SPSS v.23 for analysis. Descriptive analysis was reported to describe the demographic, mean knowledge, attitude practice and psychological response score of nurses. A total of 415 nurses participated in this study, resulting in a 100% response rate. Of the participants, 241 (58.1%) were female. Of the 415 nurses, 307 (74%), 278 (67%), 299 (72%) and 354 (85.3%) had good knowledge, good infection prevention practice, a favourable attitude and disturbed psychological response towards COVID-19, respectively.

Practices of Healthcare Workers regarding Infection Prevention in Bale Zone Hospitals, Southeast Ethiopia

Introduction. In Ethiopia, infection prevention to protect patients, healthcare workers, and visitors from healthcare-acquired infections is one of a number of nationwide transformational initiatives to ensure the provision of quality healthcare services. The aim of this research was to assess the practice of healthcare workers regarding infection prevention and its associated factors in Bale zone Hospitals. Methods. A cross-sectional study targeted 402 healthcare workers using simple random sampling to learn about their practices related to infection prevention. Data were collected in interviews using pretested, structured questionnaires. Returned questionnaires were checked for completeness and then data were entered into a database and analyzed using SPSS Version 20. Adjusted odd ratio (AOR) with a 95% confidence interval was calculated to determine the strength of association, and variables with a p value &lt;0.05 in the final model were considered as statistically significant. Results. Three hundred ninety-four healthcare workers participated in the study. Of these; 145 (36.8%, 95% CI 32, 42%) of them were found to have self-reported good infection prevention practice. Good knowledge towards infection prevention (AOR = 1.84, 95% CI 1.02, 3.31), availability of personal protective equipment (AOR = 1.96, 95% CI 1.16, 3.32), and water (AOR = 4.42, 95% 2.66, 7.34) at workplace were found to have a statistically significant association with healthcare workers self-reported good infection prevention practices. Conclusions. In this study, slightly more than one-third of the healthcare workers reported to have good infection prevention practice. Good knowledge towards infection prevention, working in departments, availability of personal protective equipment, and water at work place were found to have statistically significant association with self-reported good infection prevention practices.

Good infection prevention practices in three Brazilian hospitals: Implications for patient safety policies

ObjectiveHealthcare-associated infections (HAI) are a serious patient safety problem. There are effective preventive practices, but little information on adherence in Brazilian hospitals. This study aims at assessing adherence to good HAI prevention practices. MethodsA cross-sectional observational study was conducted at 3 different types of hospitals (public-federal, public-state and private) in Rio Grande do Norte state, Brazil. A total of 19 structure and process indicators were measured based on 7 National Quality Forum Patient Safety Practices. ResultsOverall adherence was low, but higher in the private hospital, followed by the public-federal and public-state institutions. There was adequate maintenance of central venous catheters and high vaccine coverage against the influenza virus among health professionals. However, hand hygiene adherence was low, and surgical antibiotic prophylaxis and prevention of multidrug-resistant bacteria transmission, urinary tract infection by urinary catheter and associated with mechanical ventilation were inadequate. ConclusionsDespite the availability of evidence-based recommendations, there is ample room for improvement in adherence to safe practices in the hospitals under study, contributing to the heightened risk of unnecessary harm to patients.

Whole-genome-based analysis reveals multiclone Serratia marcescens outbreaks in a non-Neonatal Intensive Care Unit setting in a tertiary care hospital in India.

We report the use of next generation sequencing (NGS) for investigating an outbreak of 13 cases of Serratia marcescens blood stream infections in a non-Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (non-NICU) setting in a tertiary care hospital in India over 5 months. Thirteen cases of sepsis due to S. marcescens were identified in various Intensive Care Units (ICUs) over 5 months. Environmental surveillance identified isolates in the adult ICU (AICU). Antibiogram did not correlate with timeline. Sequencing libraries were prepared using Nextera XT chemistry (Illumina). Based on NGS, two clusters were identified. Cluster 1 had environmental and clinical isolates from the AICU and cluster 2 were isolates from the Coronary Care Unit (CCU). NICU and Paediatric ICU isolates did not belong to any cluster. Polyclonal outbreaks best identified by NGS can occur simultaneously. Good infection prevention practices like hand hygiene for compounded medicines and surface cleaning helped end the outbreak.

Patient safety and infection control: bases for curricular integration.

To analyze curricular integration between teaching of patient safety and good infection prevention and control practices. Integrative review, designed to answer the question: "How does curricular integration of content about 'patient safety teaching' and content about 'infection prevention and control practices' occur in undergraduate courses in the health field?". The following databases were searched for primary studies: CINAHL, LILACS, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, Scopus, Europe PMC and MEDLINE. The final sample consisted of 13 studies. After content analysis, primary studies were grouped into two subject categories: "Innovative teaching practices" and "Curricular evaluation. Patient safety related to infection prevention and control practices is present in the curriculum of health undergraduate courses, but is not coordinated with other themes, is taught sporadically, and focuses mainly on hand hygiene.
