Seroprevalence and Distribution of Toxoplasma gondii Infections among Patients in the West Bank, Palestine (2017-2021).

Toxoplasmosis is a zoonotic disease caused by the obligate intracellular protozoan Toxoplasma gondii. The current study assessed the seroepidemiological status and risk factors of T. gondii in the West Bank, Palestine. We conducted a retrospective study among 1,475 patients referred for serological examination for toxoplasmosis between 2017 and 2021 at the Central Public Health Laboratory. The overall prevalences of anti-T. gondii IgG and IgM antibodies were 1.0% [18.9-23.0%] and 1.0% [0.5-1.6%], respectively. Multifactorial analysis showed that age and sex were significantly associated with the presence of IgG antibodies. The prevalence of IgG antibodies was highest in 2018 and decreased significantly each year until 2021. Routine serological screening in women of childbearing age and pregnant women is recommended.

Seroprevalence of IgG and IgM Antibodies against Toxoplasma gondii in Dogs in Greece.

Toxoplasmosis, caused by the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii, is a zoonotic disease that affects various animal species, including dogs, that can serve as sentinels for indirectly estimating the environmental contamination. The current study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of T. gondii IgG and IgM antibodies in dogs across different regions of Greece and assess their living area as a potential risk factor. In total, 1282 blood samples were collected from dogs in urban and rural areas of Greece, including Attica and Thessaloniki. Serum samples were tested for T. gondii-specific IgG and IgM antibodies using an indirect immunofluorescent antibody test. A chi-square test was performed to assess the association between seropositivity for T. gondii and geographical location (urban/rural). The overall T. gondii seroprevalence was 47.6%, while the seroprevalence of IgG and IgM antibodies was 34.3% and 22.2%, respectively. Dogs from rural areas exhibited a significantly higher seroprevalence (53.8%) than those from urban areas (43.9%) (p < 0.001), with the estimated odds ratio being equal to 1.49 (95% CI, 1.18 to 1.65) and the relative risk increased by 22.4%. Dogs in Greece are highly exposed to T. gondii, particularly in rural areas. Measures to prevent canine infections are necessary, and basic hygiene practices, such as hand washing after petting dogs, are required to reduce human infection risk and safeguard public health.

Investigation of Toxoplasma gondii Seroprevalence in Pregnant Women in Çankırı

Toxoplasma gondii can be transmitted to humans through consumption of raw or undercooked meat containing live tissue cysts, consumption of water or food contaminated with oocysts shed from cat feces, and vertical transmission during pregnancy or through tissue, organ, and blood transfusion. The aim of this study was to investigate the seroprevalence of T. gondii in patients admitted to the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of Çankırı State Hospital (ÇSH). In this study, anti-T. gondii IgG and IgM antibody levels of 62 pregnant women between the ages of 17 and 47 who applied to ÇSH gynecology and obstetrics outpatient clinic for normal pregnancy follow-up between June 2022 and January 2023 were investigated. According to the results of the studies, anti-T gondii IgG positivity is 12.9% and negative 87.1% and anti-T. gondii IgM positivity is 0% while it was found to be 100% negative. According to these results, it is reported that the majority of pregnant women do not encounter T. gondii and; therefore, they should be more careful in terms of congenital toxoplasmosis. T. gondii can be transmitted to humans through consumption of water or food contaminated with oocysts excreted in cat feces and through vertical transmission or tissue, organ, and blood transfusion during pregnancy. Therefore, pregnant women should be carefully monitored for T. gondii.

The Prevalence of Toxoplasma Gondii Infection in Duhok, Kurdistan Region, Iraq

Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic infection, with widespread gestational and congenital transmission rates globally, consequently, it is regarded as a public health concern and an overlooked medical condition. Human infection occurs through various routes, including the ingestion of oocysts found in cat feces, consumption of raw or undercooked meat containing the parasite, and vertical transmission from an infected pregnant mother to her fetus. Objective. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection among individuals in various age groups and genders in Duhok City. Methods. In this research, 2251 individuals of various ages and genders visited the central laboratory in Duhok Сity, Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and peripheral blood samples were taken from individuals to identify specific anti-Toxoplasma gondii IgM and IgG antibodies using serological test (ELISA test). Results. Based on the findings of this study, it was observed that the prevalence of toxoplasmosis among females with infections detected in both IgM and IgG was 0.3 % and 20.6 %, respectively, and in males, the rate of infection with IgG was found to be 0.3 %, while no infections were detected with IgM. Also, among female individuals, the study recorded a 0.3 % infection rate for toxoplasmosis, which encompassed both IgM and IgG cases. Conclusions. Based on this study, it can be concluded that Toxoplasma infection is more common in females than in males, chronic toxoplasmosis appears to be more prevalent than acute infection with the highest rate of acute infections was found in the age group of 21–40 years.

Seromolecular study on the prevalence and risk factors of Toxoplasma gondii infection in pregnant women referred to a gynecology hospital in Urmia, northwest part of Iran in 2022

Toxoplasmosis is a frequent infection among the human population. The infection can cause devastating complications for the fetus during pregnancy. The present study aimed to determine the serological and molecular prevalence of the infection and molecular characterization of Toxoplasma gondii isolates among pregnant women referred to Kowsar Hospital, Urmia, Iran. In a cross-sectional study, 340 blood samples were collected from pregnant women referred to Kowsar Hospital, Urmia, Iran from May to July 2022. Anti-T. gondii IgG and IgM seropositivity were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. PCR was carried out by targeting the GRA6 gene of the parasite on all patients’ buffy coats. Anti-T. gondii IgG and IgM antibodies were positive in two (0.6%) women, and 101 (29.7%) women had anti-T. gondii IgG and 70.3% were seronegative. PCR was positive in two IgM-positive women, and both isolates belonged to T. gondii carrying the GRA6 allele of lineage I. The risk of infection was significantly higher in women who had constant contact with cats and soil, and who were residents of rural areas. The two IgM-positive women were asymptomatic regarding acute toxoplasmosis. According to the results of the present study, the prevalence of toxoplasmosis in pregnant women in Urmia is similar to its prevalence in other areas in northwestern Iran, and despite the low prevalence of acute infection, it should not be ignored.

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii Antibodies and Associated Risk Factors Among Women in Zakho City, Iraq.

Toxoplasmosis, an infectious disease caused by the obligate intracellular protozoan parasite, poses varying degrees of risk, ranging from asymptomatic cases in immunocompetent individuals to severe, life-threatening conditions in immunocompromised individuals and developing fetuses, especially when infection occurs during early pregnancy. While the disease is endemic in Iraq, there is a notable lack of precise information regarding its seroprevalence among females of childbearing age and pregnant women, along with associated risk factors in the Zakho district. This cross-sectional study aimed to address this gap by determining the prevalence of anti-Toxoplasma gondii IgG and IgM antibodies using the ELISA assay. The study involved 610 females aged 18-79 years from various residential areas within Zakho district, Iraq. The findings revealed a seroprevalence of 32.46% for anti-Toxoplasma IgG antibodies and 8.86% for IgM antibodies. Significant variations in IgG antibody seroprevalence were observed across different age groups (P=0.008), with the highest prevalence noted among those aged 46-55 years (47.73%). Conversely, IgM antibody seroprevalence, while non-significant (P>0.05), displayed the highest rate of 10.05% among ages 18-25 years. The study identified residence as a variable significantly associated with toxoplasmosis. Additionally, contact with cats, marital status, a history of abortion, and the consumption of homemade food showed significant associations with anti-Toxoplasma IgM antibodies only. These findings strongly suggest that Toxoplasma gondii is a prevalent causative agent of infection in Zakho city, Iraq. This study contributes valuable insights into the seroprevalence and associated risk factors, providing a foundation for targeted interventions and further research in this region.

Seroepidemiological study on coinfection of toxoplasmosis and active tuberculosis in Northern Iran: a case control study.

Coinfection of tuberculosis (TB) and human parasitic infections is common in developing countries. There is little information about the prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) infection among TB patients in Iran. In this case-control study, anti-toxoplasma antibodies were measured by ELISA method in 100 patients with active tuberculosis and 100 healthy individuals who were matched in terms of sex, age, and place of residence. Anti-T. gondii IgG antibodies were diagnosed in 62% of TB patients (95% CI 53-71%) and 70% of control subjects (95% CI 62-78%). Anti-T. gondii IgM antibodies were found in 1% of both TB patients and control group. The seroprevalence of T. gondii infection was not significantly different between TB patients and healthy individuals (P > 0.05). None of the assessed sociodemographic and behavioral factors was recognized as a risk factor for toxoplasmosis in TB infected patients. Moreover, the level of anti-T. gondii IgG antibodies concentration in TB patients was significantly higher than in control subjects and revealed skewness towards humoral immune response in TB patients. Coinfection of toxoplasmosis and tuberculosis was prevalent but T. gondii infection was independent of active TB in this co-endemic area.

Association between ABO and Rh blood groups and Toxoplasma gondii infection: A cross sectional study.

We aimed to determine the association between the seropositivity to Toxoplasma gondii and the ABO and Rh blood groups in 2,053 people. ABO and Rhesus blood groups and anti-T. gondii IgG and IgM antibodies were determined using commercially available assays. Of the 2,053 people studied, 171(8.3%) were positive for anti-T. gondii IgG antibodies. Sixty-five (38.0%) and 36 (21.1%) of these 171 individuals had high anti-T. gondii IgG antibody levels (≥150 IU mL-1) and anti-T. gondii IgM antibodies, respectively. We found the following prevalences of T. gondii infection among the ABO groups: 8.5% in group A, 4.3% in group B, 4.7% in group AB, and 8.9% in group O (P = 0.19). The prevalences of T. gondii infection among Rh groups were: 8.4% in the Rh-positive group and 7.1% in theRh-negative group (P = 0.58). Logistic regression analysis showed that the frequencies of ABO andRh blood groups were similar (P > 0.05) among people with positive and negative serology for anti-T. gondii IgG antibodies, with high (≥150 IU mL-1) and lower (<150 IU mL-1) levels of anti-T.gondii IgG antibodies, and with positive and negative serology for anti-T. gondii IgM antibodies. Results does not support an association between T. gondii infection and ABO and Rh blood groups.

Seroprevalence of Anti-Toxoplasma gondii Antibodies among Patients with Cancer at Hiwa Cancer Hospital in Sulaimani City, Kurdistan Region, Iraq.

Toxoplasma gondii is an opportunistic protozoan parasite that causes a life-threatening disease - toxoplasmosis - in immunocompromised individuals, including patients with cancer. This prospective cross-sectional study set out to determine the prevalence of toxoplasmosis in patients with cancer compared with that of healthy individuals. A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted in Sulaimani City of Iraq from November 2019 to May 2020. Anti-T. gondii IgG and IgM antibodies were measured in the blood samples of 113 patients with cancer (80 with solid organ tumors and 33 with haematological malignancies) entered to Hiwa Cancer Hospital and 82 healthy controls, who were referred to the Directorate of Blood Transfusion for blood donation, using chemiluminescence microparticle immunoassay (CMIA). The prevalence of anti-T. gondii IgG was 39.8% in the patient group and 24.4% in the control group, which amounted to a significant difference (P = 0.024). Only one case of anti-T. gondii IgM positivity was observed in the patient group, and no IgM seropositivity was reported in the control group. Moreover, the seroprevalence of anti-T. gondii IgG was non-significantly higher (P = 0.102) in the patients with haematological malignancies (51.5%) than in those with solid organ tumors (35%). Occupation was the only risk factor which had a significant association with T gondii infection (odds ratio [OR]: 1.3, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.6746163 - 2.4282788, P = 0.029). The prevalence of T. gondii infection is higher in patients with cancer than in healthy individuals. Therefore, T. gondii screening in patients with cancer is recommended.

Factors Associated with Toxoplasma gondii Seroprevalence in Pregnant Women: A Cross-Sectional Study in Belgrade, Serbia.

Toxoplasmosis, caused by the cosmopolitan protozoan Toxoplasma gondii, has particular implications during pregnancy due to the possible transmission of infection to the fetus. Very few studies have assessed seroprevalence and the risk factors for toxoplasmosis in healthy pregnant women. The aim of this study was to examine the seroprevalence of T. gondii infection in healthy pregnant women and to identify the associated risk factors for toxoplasmosis. The cross-sectional study involved 300 healthy pregnant women who came to the Institute for Blood Transfusion in Belgrade between November 2018 and February 2019 for routine blood group and Rh factor testing before delivery, who were also tested using serological screening for the presence of specific antibodies. Positives were further examined using enzyme immunoassay. Of the total sera of participants analyzed, 38 were positive for specific IgG, resulting in a seroprevalence rate of 12.7% (95% Confidence Interval (CI) 9.1-17.0%). All pregnant women presented negative anti-T. gondii IgM antibodies. The multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that living in a house with a garden was independently associated with the risk of T. gondii infections, while eating chicken meat was connected with a lower risk compared to eating other types of meat with an odds ratio (OR) of 2.5 (95% CI 1.21-5.02) and an OR of 0.3 (95% CI 0.09-0.83), respectively. Although the prevalence of anti-T. gondii IgG antibodies is relatively low, it is essential to maintain and adapt evidence-based preventive measures for toxoplasmosis continually.

The Seroprevalence and Risk Factors of &lt;i&gt;Toxoplasma gondii&lt;/i&gt; among Abattoir Workers in Rivers State, Nigeria

Toxoplasma gondiiis an obligate, intracellular, parasitic protozoan that causes toxoplasmosis. Infection in humans can occur through contact with contaminated soil, water, or unwashed raw vegetables and ingestion of bradyzoites from infected intermediate hosts’tissue, which is a potential route of transmission to meat handlers, including abattoir workers. This study aimed to determine the relationship between risk factors and seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis among abattoir workers. The cross-sectional study composed of 160 participants from various abattoir locations in the state. The participants were randomly selected and via a well-structured questionnaire, data for possible risk factors were obtained. Blood Samples were also collected for IgM and IgG antibodies measurement for Toxoplasma gondii. The results indicated a high seroprevalence of T. gondii IgG and IgM antibodies (43.8%) in abattoir workers in Rivers State. Risk factors observed to be significantly associated with T. gondii seropositivity in this study were the animal type slaughtered (birds, cows, and goats), and washing of hands/practicing good hygiene. The study demonstrated a high level a high seroprevalence of T. gondii among abattoir workers in Rivers State. There is a need for the Rivers State government to establish enlightenment and prevention programs for these occupationally exposed and other populations at risk of T. gondii infection.

Toxoplasmosis Examination With Anti-Toxo IgM And IgG Results In Petshop Staff

Toxoplasmosis is an infection caused by a single-celled parasite called Toxoplasma gondii. Infection is most commonly acquired from contact with cats and their feces or raw or undercooked meat. There are several risk factors that favor the occurrence of this infection including the presence of cats in the residence, cleaning of pet litter boxes, hand washing habits and consumption of raw or undercooked food. Petshop is a retail business that sells a variety of pets and also sells pet food, accessories, animal care and maintenance. The purpose of this study was to determine the exposure to toxoplasmosis with the results of Toxoplasma gondii IgG antibody examination and Toxoplasma gondii IgM antibody in petshop staff.This study is a descriptive study using cross sectional method with 25 respondents from petshop staff. The test method for toxoplasmosis detection used was Rapid (Immunochromatography). The data analysis technique used was univariate analysis to determine the percentage of seropositive results of Toxoplasma gondii IgG antibodies and Toxoplasma gondii IgM antibodies. Based on the results of the study obtained data 11 respondents seropositive anti-toxo IgG, 14 respondents did not have anti-toxo IgG and anti-toxo IgM and there were no respondents with positive anti-toxo IgM in Petshop officers. Therefore it can be concluded that 11 out of 25 respondents have been infected with Toxoplasma gondii.

SEROPREVALENCE DE LA TOXOPLASMOSE A DAKAR : ÉTUDE COMPARATIVE ENTRE LES DONNEURS DE SANG ET LES PATIENTS ATTEINT D’INSUFFISANCE RENALE CHRONIQUE

SummaryIntroduction: Toxoplasmosis infection is not transmitted from human to human, except in the case of transmission from mother to fetus, blood transfusion, or transplantation of an infected organ. The aim of this study was to compare the seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis in blood donors and patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) treated at the Ouakam Military Hospital (HMO). Methodology: We conducted a cross-sectional study between September and December 2022 among CRF patients followed up at the HMO and blood donors. A questionnaire was administered to collect socio-demographic information. A blood sample was then taken. Toxoplasma gondii IgG and IgM antibodies were tested by chemiluminescence. Data were analyzed using Epi Info 7.2.5.0 software. Results: A total of 200 participants were enrolled, including 100 volunteer blood donors and 100 hemodialysis patients. The mean ages were 30.7 ± 10 years and 41.4 ± 14.6 years for blood donors and CRF patients respectively. The overall seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis in blood donors was 33%, whereas it was 38% in CRF patients. IgM antibody positivity was noted in only one patient. Seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis in blood donors was highest in the 31-44 age group, at 37.5%, while in CRF patients it was highest in the over-45 age group, at 45.2%. According to the notion of contact with a cat, it was higher in hemodialysis patients who had been in contact with a cat, with a rate of 57.9% (p=0.047), in contrast to blood donors, where the highest rate was recorded in subjects who had not been in contact with a cat. Conclusion: This study revealed that the seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis was higher in CRF patients than in blood donors, with a seroprevalence rate higher than those previously reported in Dakar in pregnant women. Toxoplasma gondii Seroprevalence and Trends in Women Presenting for Toxoplasma Screening in South-West Romania.

Toxoplasmosis, caused by the obligate intracellular protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii), is a globally prevalent zoonotic disease with potentially severe implications for immunocompromised individuals, pregnant women, and their fetuses/children. This study examined the prevalence of anti-T. gondii IgM and IgG antibodies in two groups of childbearing age women, including 653 participants in Group 1 (2013-2016) and 3221 participants in Group 2 (2019-2022). Our results revealed a decrease in the overall positivity rate of anti-T. gondii IgM antibodies from 2.32% to 1.06%, suggesting improved public health interventions over time. However, there were variations among different age groups and between rural and urban environments, with a significant decrease in urban areas across all age groups from Group 1 to Group 2. Regarding anti-T. gondii IgG antibodies, we did not observe a significant change in the seropositivity rate between the two groups. In the rural population with an age group over 35 years, we observed the highest positivity rate in Group 2. This study provided information on the risk factors and burden of toxoplasmosis in women of childbearing age with data that can be valuable to public health policies and the planning of healthcare measures for effective toxoplasmosis management.

Associations between Toxoplasma gondii Infection and Multiple Sclerosis: A Case-Control Seroprevalence Study.

Currently, there are conflicting reports on the associations between Toxoplasma gondii infection and multiple sclerosis (MS) in humans. In the present study, a case-control study was carried out to assess associations between seropositivity to T. gondii infection and MS. This case-control study was carried out on 200 MS patients (cases) attended in Sina Hospital affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran, and 200 healthy subjects from the general population of the same city, March to July 2017. Blood samples were collected from individuals and were examined using Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the presence of T. gondii IgG antibodies and the IgG-positive samples were further analyzed for specific anti-T. gondii IgM. The overall seroprevalence of anti-T. gondii IgG was 44.2% (177/400) in 121 (60.5%) sera of the 200 MS patients (cases) and 56 (28.0%) sera of the 200 controls (OR = 3.94; 95% CI: 2.59-5.99; P < 0.001). Seroprevalence of T. gondii infection in MS patients increased significantly with increasing of age (P < 0.001). In the control group, no statistically significant differences were seen between the seroprevalence of T. gondii infection in various age groups (P = 0.858). Moreover, no statistically significant relationships were reported between the seropositivity to T. gondii and the sex for the cases and controls (P>0.05). Anti-T. gondii IgM antibodies were not detected in anti-T. gondii IgG positive patients. T. gondii infection might be a probability risk factor for MS. However, further studies are necessary to describe clearly the roles of T. gondii infection in MS.

Seroepidemiology of Toxoplasmosis in Pregnant Women Referring to the Pregnancy Care Center of Ramsar

Background Toxoplasmosis is a common parasitic infection with high prevalence and worldwide distribution. It may cause severe disease in the fetus of newly infected pregnant women. Objective This study aimed to evaluate the seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis and its related risk factors among pregnant women in Ramsar city, Mazandaran province, north of Iran, from October 2017 to March 2018. Methods In this analytical-cross sectional study, specific anti-Toxoplasma gondii IgG and IgM antibodies were measured in 191 pregnant women by ELISA method. The length of T. gondii infection was estimated by the IgG avidity test. Demographic and behavioral information about pregnant women and possible risk factors of toxoplasmosis were collected through interviews. Results Specific IgG antibody against T. gondii was detected in 46.1% and IgM in 5.8% and both IgG and IgM antibodies were detected in 4.7% of pregnant women. The IgG avidity test did not show any acute case of toxoplasmosis. None of the demographic characteristics, such as age, occupation, place of residence, education, income, trimester of pregnancy, frequency of pregnancy, and history of abortion was correlated with toxoplasmosis. Moreover, behavioral characteristics, such as the source of consumed water, contact with soil, presence of cats in the household, consumption of vegetables, type of meat consumed, and the way of cooking meat had no significant correlation with toxoplasmosis seropositivity. Conclusion More than half of the pregnant women (54%) were toxoplasmosis-free and therefore at risk of acquiring this infection. Increasing the knowledge of pregnant women about toxoplasmosis prevention may reduce the risk of this infection during pregnancy.

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii IgG and IgM antibodies and associated risk factors among pregnant women consulted in three health centers in Dschang, Cameroon

BackgroundToxoplasmosis is a zoonosis caused by Toxoplasma gondii, an obligate intracellular protozoan responsible for one of the most common congenital infections in the world. This study aimed to determine the seroprevalence and risk factors associated with toxoplasmosis in pregnant women consulted in three health centers in the city of Dschang. MethodsThis study was a cross-sectional study that was conducted, with a total of 242 participants. A questionnaire was administered after obtaining the free and informed consent of the participants. Blood sample was collected to assay IgG and IgM antibodies specific to Toxoplasma gondii using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit, and potential risk factors were evaluated with the administration questionnaire using a binary logistic regression model. Statistical significance was measured at P < 0.05. ResultsThe overall seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis was 82.7%,with a seroprevalence of toxoplasma IgG of 62.8% (152), that of IgM at 11.6% (28) and that of IgG/IgM at 8.3% (20). The Saint Vincent Paul Hospital had a seroprevalence of 43.8% IgG and 8.7% IgM; followed by the Dschang District Hospital (11.6% IgG and 2.1% IgM). The seroprevalence of toxoplasma IgG (35.5%) and IgM (6.2%) was higher in multiparous pregnant women, and in the group of women who performed their first toxoplasmosis serology in the first trimester of pregnancy, 70 (28.9%), 9 (3.7%) respectively for IgG and IgM. The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the possession of a cat at home or its presence in the neighborhood, the consumption of undercooked or uncooked meat and having a history of blood transfusion were found to be statistically significant risk factors associated with toxoplasmosis seroprevalence among pregnant women. ConclusionThe present study revealed a high seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis. Given this high seroprevalence, screening for toxoplasmosis in women of childbearing age should be encouraged.

Investigation of Anti-&lt;i&gt;Toxoplasma gondii&lt;/i&gt; Antibodies in the Hemodialysis Patients with ELISA Method

The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in hemodialysis (HD) patients and to reveal the importance of toxoplasmosis as a risk factor in these patients. The study was carried out between 26.12.2013 and 01.01.2016 at Van Yüzüncü University Dursun Odabaş the Medical Center on patients with chronic renal failure who entered HD. As the patient group in the study, 150 patients with chronic renal failure who underwent HD; as the control group, 50 people without any known chronic disease and who did not receive any immunosuppressive therapy were included. The ELISA method was used to determine anti-T. gondii IgG and IgM antibody levels. A questionnaire including risk factors that may cause the transmission of T. gondii was applied to the patient and control groups. In the study, 89 out of total 150 HD patients (59.3%) were found anti-T. gondii IgG antibody seropositive and 4 were (2.7%) anti-T. gondii IgM antibody seropositive. Fourteen of 50 healthy individuals in the group (28%) were anti-T. gondii IgG antibody positive, while none in this group was anti-T. gondii IgM antibody positive. Statistical analysis demonstrated there were separate significant correlations between both anti-T. gondii IgG (p<0.01) and anti-T. gondii IgM antibody (p<0.05) frequencies with chronic renal failure. While there were no statistically significant differences in the prevalence of anti-T. gondii IgG antibody identification based on gender and age groups, there were significant differences between the prevalence of anti-T. gondii IgM antibody based on both gender (p<0.05) and age groups (p<0.05). Some living conditions and habits of the patient group were evaluated statistically, and a significant correlation (p<0.05) was found between eating only raw meatballs and toxoplasmosis seropositivity. As a result, it was understood that the physicians who monitor of HD patients should assess toxoplasmosis among the risk factors.

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii IgG and IgM Antibodies and Associated Risk Factors among Pregnant Women Consulted at the Bamenda Regional Hospital, Cameroon

Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic infection with public health importance. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis and its risk factors among pregnant women consulted at the Bamenda Regional Hospital.

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in women with a gynecological tumor living in eastern China.

The association between Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) infection and malignancy has attracted increased attention in recent years, but little is known of T. gondii infection among women diagnosed with a gynecological tumor (GT) in China. We conducted a case-control study involving 460 women diagnosed with a GT and 460 age-matched healthy controls (HCs) to estimate the infection process of T. gondii and understand the risk factors of T. gondii infection in patients with a GT. Levels of anti-T. gondii IgG and IgM were measured by enzyme-linked immunoassays every 12 months. After a median follow-up time of 4.3 years (range 4 to 5 years), 55/460 (11.96%) patients with a GT and 15/460 (3.26%) HCs were seroprevalence for T. gondii antibodies, respectively (P = 0.001). IgG antibodies against T. gondii were found in 54 GT patients (11.74%) and 15 HCs (3.26%), respectively (P = 0.001). The seroprevalence of T. gondii IgM antibodies was similar in patients with a GT and with HCs (2.83% vs 1.3%, P = 0.105). Multivariate stepwise logistic regression analysis revealed contact with cats (OR, 6.67; 95% CI [2.89-10.75]; P = 0.001), exposure to soil (OR, 2.16; 95% CI [1.14-4.10]; P = 0.019), being a farm-worker (OR, 4.17; 95% CI [1.20-11.49]; P = 0.006) and history of chemotherapy (OR, 3.16; 95% CI [1.56-6.45]; P = 0.001) to be independent risk factors for T. gondii infection. Women with an ovarian cancer or endometrial cancer had higher T. gondii seroprevalence than that of HCs. Moreover, T. gondii infection in patients with a GT mostly acquired within two years of diagnosis, but the infection in healthy controls had no obvious time characteristics. Here, we demonstrated that T. gondii infection is significantly higher in patients with a GT (especially in women with an ovarian tumor) compared to HCs. Thus, infection with this parasite should be avoided in patients with a GT, and the causal relationship between T. gondii and GTs should be studied in detail.
