Role of Relationship Beliefs and Cognitive Insight on the Quality of Marital Relationship among Divorced Women

BackgroundThe spread and growth of divorce is in critical level in the country and health of family, as the cornerstone of future health of society, is exposed to problems.ObjectivesThis study tries to investigate the role of relationship beliefs and cognitive insight in quality of marital relationship of divorced women.MethodsThis is a descriptive-correlational study and the participants chosen based on convenience sampling included 80 divorced women who referred to the Social Emergency Center of the Welfare Organization of Zanjan in the final nine months of 2017. The instruments were the Golombok Rust Inventory of Marital State (GRIMS), the Relationship Belief Inventory (RBI) of Epstein and Eidelson and the Beck Cognitive Insight Scale (BCIS). To analyze the data, the Pearson correlation coefficient and regression analysis were used.ResultsResults indicated negative and significant relation between relationship beliefs and cognitive insight and the quality of marital relationship of divorced women. The results of regression analysis also indicated that the components of relationship beliefs and cognitive insight both define 51% of the variance of the quality of marital relationship.ConclusionResults of this research showed importance of taking preventive and medication measures within framework of the educational and counseling programs with respect to the cognitive variables, especially relationship beliefs and cognitive insight.

Relationship between Irrational Beliefs and Marital Conflicts in Couples Based on Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy

Introduction: The main aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between irrational beliefs and marital conflicts. Materials and Methods: The research method was correlation and regression analysis. A total of 150 couples (150 females, 150 males) who were selected through available sampling method participated in this study. Participants were asked to complete the Golombok Rust Inventory of Marital State (GRIMS), and the Survey of Personal Beliefs (SPB). Comparative data analysis was performed using SPSS Version 19. Results:The result showed a significant positive association between irrational beliefs and its subscales awfulizin (r=0/157, p<0.01) self directed should (r=0/354, p<0.01) other directed should (r=0/196, p<0.01) self worth (r=0/116, p<0.05) (except for low frustration tolerance subscale(r=0/106) and marital conflicts. The results also revealed that self-directed shoulds significantly predicts marital problems. Conclusion: In conclusion, the present study offers support for a relationship between the irrational beliefs postulated by Rational-Emotive Behavior therapy and marital conflict and indicates that couples with high irrational beliefs had a great number and frequency of conflicts and felt themselves more tense. Findings of this research can be used in marital consultation.

Unplanned pregnancy and subsequent psychological distress in partnered women: a cross-sectional study of the role of relationship quality and wider social support

BackgroundResearch into the impact of unintended pregnancy on the wellbeing of women tends to focus on pregnancies ending in either termination or lone motherhood. Unintended pregnancy is common in partnered women, but little is known about the association between unintended pregnancy and postpartum affective disorders, such as depression and anxiety in this group. Poor relationship quality and lack of social support are considered risk factors for psychological distress (PD). We examined the association between unplanned motherhood and subsequent PD in partnered women, for whom evidence is sparse, accounting for the role of relationship quality and social support.MethodsData for 12,462 partnered mothers were drawn from the first survey of Millennium Cohort Study, completed at 9 months postpartum. Women reported whether their baby was planned, and how they felt when they discovered that they were pregnant. Pregnancy intention is categorised as “planned”, “unplanned/happy”, “unplanned/ambivalent” and “unplanned/unhappy”. PD was assessed using the modified 9-item Rutter Malaise Inventory. Social support was measured by a composite score for perceived support, and a measure of actual support from friends and family. Relationship quality was assessed using a modified Golombok-Rust Inventory of Marital State. The effect of pregnancy intention on the odds of PD at 9 months was estimated, adjusting for potential confounding factors. All analyses were weighted for response and design effects.ResultsIn total 32.8%(weighted) (4343/12462) of mothers reported an unplanned pregnancy: 23.3 wt% (3087) of mothers felt happy, 3.5 wt% (475) ambivalent, and 6.0 wt% (781) unhappy upon discovery. Unplanned pregnancy was associated with a significantly increased odds of PD compared to planned (OR 1.73 (95%CI: 1.53, 1.95)). This was more pronounced among women who reported negative or ambivalent feelings in early pregnancy (OR 2.72 (95%CI:2.17, 3.41) and 2.56 (95%CI:1.95, 3.34), respectively), than those who reported positive feelings (OR 1.39 (95%CI:1.21, 1.60)). Adjustment for relationship quality, in particular, reduced odds of PD after unplanned pregnancy (e.g. from 2.19 (95%C: 1.74, 2.74) to 1.63 (95% CI: 1.29, 2.07 in the unplanned, unhappy group compared to the planned).ConclusionsA third of partnered mothers reported that their pregnancy was unintended, yet this group is under-researched. Unplanned motherhood was associated with increased risk of PD at 9 months postpartum, particularly among women who felt unhappy or ambivalent at the start. The roles of relationship quality and social support require further investigation, as possible means to intervene and improve maternal wellbeing.

The Interface Between Quality and Violence in Marital Relationships

Abstract Domestic violence has been considered accountable for a reduction inthe level of marital quality, although no relationship has been identified between these variables. This study aimed to measure the levels of marital quality and domestic violence, as well as their relationship with sociodemographic characteristics and the predictive power of the different types of violence on martial quality. This quantitative study included 186 heterosexual couples (N = 372), who answered a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Golombok Rust Inventory of Marital State (GRIMS), and the Revised Conflict Tactics Scales (CTS2). The respondents assessed their marital quality as being average or very good (66.5%), and poor or with very severe problems (33.5%). Although good levels of marital quality prevailed, the rates of psychological violence reached 86.6%. A negative correlation was found between violence and marital quality. A possible naturalization of violence was found, especially psychological, which was the dimension with the highest predictive power for marital problems.

The Moderating Role of Attachment Styles on the Relationship of Alexithymia and Fear of Intimacy with Marital Satisfaction

Attachment styles, alexithymia, and fear of intimacy are considered to be detrimental to degree of satisfactionwithin the couples relationships. The present study aimed to investigate the moderating role of attachment styleson the relationship of alexithymia and fear of intimacy with marital satisfaction in a sample of Iranian students.Participants (313 males, 375 females) filled the Adult Attachment Inventory (AAI), the Farsi version of theToronto Alexithymia Scale-20 (FTAS-20), Fear of Intimacy Scale (FIS), and the Golombok Rust Inventory ofMarital State Questionnaire (GRIMS). Secure attachment style showed a significant positive association withmarital satisfaction, while insecure attachment styles as well as fear of intimacy and alexithymia showedsignificant negative associations with marital satisfaction. The relationship between fear of intimacy and maritalsatisfaction was moderated by secure and avoidant attachment styles. The results revealed that only avoidantattachment style could moderate the relationship between alexithymia and marital satisfaction. Results of thepresent study suggest that the relationship of alexithymia and fear of intimacy with marital satisfaction is not asimple linear one. This is moderated in part by attachment styles. Hence, secure and insecure attachmentcharacteristics may have significant influence in marital relationship in opposite directions.

Reliability and Validity Study of the Turkish Version of the Golombok-Rust Inventory of Marital State (GRIMS) among a Group of Married Couple

Marriage is defined as a legal union of two different people. This union affects the individual's life in many different ways. For this reason, it is crucial to examine the institution of marriage from both theoretical and therapeutic objectives. This study aims to measure the validity and reliability of Turkish Version of Golombok-Rust Inventory of Marital State – GRIMS (Golombok-Rust Evlilik Durumu Envanteri – GREDE). In the scope of the study, 133 married couple are included in the sample who are married for 12.59 years on average and who have an approximate income of 2818.71 Turkish Liras. The average age of the sample is 39.60 for men whereas it is 36.82 for women. The results show that item-total score correlation varies between 0.251 and 0.654 for married men, 0.237 and 0.647 for married women and 0.235 and 0.587 in total. Also, since the data is fit for factor analysis, (KMO= 0.86; X2 = 1799.785; p= 0.00), principal components analysis is applied and it is found that the Inventory is a single factoral model as it originally was, it explains the 25.2% of the variance, and the values of item-weight vary between .29 and .66. In consequence, it is found that the Turkish version of GRIMS, which was developed to measure the quality and level of satisfaction that married and co-residing couples, is satisfactory, has high validity and reliability, and has valid factor structure for both men and women.

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between marital quality- in this study, the satisfaction and sociodemographic variables - and Sternberg’s elements of love. 102 subjects participated in the study, 52 male and 50 female subjects from the capital and the countryside of Rio Grande do Sul. We used the Sternberg’s Triangular Love Scale (ETAS) - Reduced Version and the Marital Satisfaction Scale - The Golombok Rust Inventory of Marital State (GRIMS). Our results indicated that marital satisfaction was heterogeneously evaluated by the sample, being decision/commitment the most preponderant element. The three components of love - Intimacy, Passion, Decision/Commitment - and the education level were correlated with marital satisfaction, demonstrating an interesting interactional frame of couples in this sample. Our data indicate a tendency for this sample to a greater appreciation of satisfaction and decision/commitment at the expense of intimacy and passion.Key words: love, interpersonal relationship, marital quality.

Sexual and Relationship Satisfaction among Persons with Young-Onset Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson's disease (PD) presents unique personal and social challenges, particularly for those with onset before the age of 50 years. The aim of this article is to evaluate sexual and non-sexual aspects of relationship satisfaction among persons with young-onset PD and their partners. The main outcome measures were Index of Sexual Satisfaction (ISS) and Golombok-Rust Inventory of Marital State (GRIMS). Persons with PD (PWP) and partners who attended the 2005 National Parkinson Foundation Young Onset Network Conference were asked to complete a survey. Each survey included demographics, a clinical history questionnaire, the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), ISS, and GRIMS. Sixty PWP (63% men, 85% in a relationship) responded to the survey. Median age was 50 years (range 29-62), with a median age at symptom onset of 43 years (range 17-55). ISS scores indicated clinically significant sexual dissatisfaction in 37%. Relationship dissatisfaction measured by the GRIMS was scored as "poor" or worse in 57%. Depressive symptomatology was severe in 19% and mild in 33%. Sexual dissatisfaction (ISS) correlated with relationship dissatisfaction (GRIMS) (correlation coefficient [CC] = 0.58, P < 0.001). Relationship dissatisfaction (GRIMS) correlated with depressive symptomatology (BDI) (CC = 0.38, P = 0.007). No correlations were found with any demographic or disease characteristics. Thirty-two couples (both the PWP and their partner) completed the surveys. Sexual and relationship dissatisfaction among PWP paralleled that of their partner (ISS: CC = 0.48, P = 0.005; GRIMS: CC = 0.61, P < 0.001). Depressive symptomatology of the PWP correlated with their partners' relationship dissatisfaction (CC = 0.46, P = 0.010). In this study, sexual and relationship dissatisfaction were prevalent among young-onset PD patients. PD patients were similar to their partners in their level of sexual and relationship dissatisfaction. The degree of dissatisfaction did not correlate with demographics or self-reported disease characteristics. Relation of attachment style with marital conflict.

During the last decade attachment theory has been used as a framework for understanding how adult relationships function. Attachment theory should focus exploration of whether attachment history might be related to later marital conflicts. The aim of this paper was to examine the relationship of attachment styles with marital conflicts. Subjects were 20 couples who entered couples therapy for their marital conflict and a sample of 20 university student couples. All answered the Adult Attachment Inventory and the Golombok-Rust Inventory of Marital State. The university couples described themselves as more securely attached to their partners than the married couples. The Anxious and Avoidant styles were associated with greater problems in the marital relationship. Secure, Anxious, and Avoidant attachment styles seemed to be associated with the quality of marital relationships. Couples who exhibited a Secure attachment style tended to be involved in relationships characterized by greater interdependence, trust, commitment, and satisfaction whereas those with insecure styles tended to be characterized by more problems.

The Male Marital Satisfaction Following Treatment for Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of treatment on marital state and satisfaction in patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). The study consisted of 213 patients with LUTS, of whom. 114 patients underwent alpha-blockers treatment and 99 underwent transit rethral resection of the prostate. All patients were assessed on their marital state and satisfaction at baseline, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months, regardless of medical or surgical treatment. Using the Golombok-Rust Inventory of Marital State (Rust, Bennum, Crowe, & Golombok, 1998), we interviewed the patients. Before treatment, there was a high level of marital dissatisfaction because of prostatic Symptoms, which caused increased levels of discomfort in most patients. There was significant improvement in most patients after the 12-month follow up. We determined that LUTS has a significant impact on patients' quality of life and spousal relationships.

The Feasibility of the Golombok-Rust Inventory of Marital State (GRIMS) in Assessing Marital Satisfaction in a Malaysian Population

The purpose of this study is to validate the English version of the Golombok-Rust Inventory of Marital State (GRIMS) in a Malaysian population. Using the test-retest method and Cronbach's alpha, we assessed reliability and internal consistency. Sensitivity to change was expressed as the effect size. Internal consistency was excellent (Cronbach's alpha value = 0.59 to 0.91) Test-retest correlation coefficient and intraclass correlation coefficient were highly significant in majority items (ICC = 0.62 and above), and there was a high degree of sensitivity and specificity. The GRIMS is suitable, reliable, valid, and sensitive to clinical change in a Malaysian population.

Women's experience of IVF: a follow-up study.

The aim of this research was to increase understanding of how women feel about the experience of IVF 2-3 years after ceasing treatment. A questionnaire covering issues relating to infertility and the value of the experience of IVF together with three self-report measures [Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS), Golombok Rust Inventory of Marital State (GRIMS) and General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12)] were mailed to all women (n = 229) who had their last contact with the clinic in 1994. The response rate was 55%. Having a baby positively influenced the recall of the IVF experience. Women who did not have a baby were more critical about the clinic and more negative about the experience of treatment but did not regret having tried IVF. These women had statistically significantly lower scores on SWLS but did not differ from those with babies on GRIMS and GHQ-12 scales. The results give insight into how women look back on the IVF experience and what aspects of treatment they recall as particularly difficult. The findings can be used by providers of IVF to implement strategies that may reduce stress and improve the patients' well-being.

The GRIMS. A psychometric instrument for the assessment of marital discord

Research in marital therapy has been disadvantaged by the lack of a good, short and recent psychometric questionnaire to objectively assess the state of a marriage for research, demographic and clinical purposes. The Golombok Rust Inventory of Marital State (GRIMS) is a companion questionnaire to the Golombok Rust Inventory of Sexual Satisfaction (GRISS), and concentrates on aspects other than the sexual in a dyadic relationship between two adults living together. It is a 28 item psychometrically constructed inventory designed to produce a single scale along which changes in a marriage may develop as marital therapy progresses. It has been shown to be valid for this purpose, and to have a good reliability.

Diagnosis of sexual dysfunction: Relationships between DSM-III(R) and the GRISS

Abstract The diagnostic categories for sexual dysfunction provided by the revised third edition of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IIIR) are compared with those of the Golombok Rust Inventory of Sexual Satisfaction (GRISS) and the Golombok Rust Inventory of Marital State (GRIMS). Similarities and differences are considered. It is concluded that the psychometric profile provided by the GRISS is more appropriate for judging severity of symptoms.

Abstract The Golombok Rust Inventory of Marital State (GRIMS) is a new short (28 item) questionnaire for the assessment of the quality of a relationship. The GRIMS is a companion test to the Golombok Rust Inventory of Sexual Satisfaction (GRISS) which is in use in sex therapy and sexual dysfunction clinics and research. Its development and construction are described, together with details of item analysis and other psychometric procedures. The scale, which can be used for either men or women, has good reliability (.90 for women and .92 for men). Content and face validity are good. Some evidence of discriminative validity is also given. The GRIMS will have clinical and research application for marriage guidance and marital therapy clinics. Some further consideration is given to various differences between men and women in their perceptions of a good relationship.
