The Church, family of God in Africa, to the challenges of global modernity

In the current context of the deep crisis within Roman Catholicism, has really been put to the challenges of the Gospel the Church, a family of God? Doesn’t the African ecclesiology of the family of God run to the challenges of global modernity? If African bishops recognize the theological relevance of this paradigm for pastoral care and catechesis, how can this paradigm help to solve many questions such as the celibacy of priests in Roman Catholicism, the problem of marriage for all or homosexuality in the Church today, and that of remarried divorcees? The Church, Family of God, the community of love, leads to hermeneutics that in Africa it must become Light of God and Light of men in the midst of our world in the making. It is by accepting to be the Lord’s Easter that she can enter modernity and assume it, that she can embrace all sinners. It is a Church of sinners saved by Christ, anointed of God.

'The Name of God in Africa' and Related Contemporary Theological, Development and Linguistic Concerns

AbstractRecent discoveries in linguistics here summarised reveal problems in the choice of an African name for God, especially when theological debate is in English, as it results in the ignoring of important differences in how God is understood. Translating the Luo term 'Nyasaye' as 'God' ignores his Luo character as 'bestowing force'. Similarly translating 'God' by 'Nyasaye' falsely assumes a carrying over of native-English theological presuppositions. These differences are shown to be consequential and, if disregarded, serious. The use of African languages rooted in African culture in debate is found to be essential for the future health of Christianity, and socio-economic development in Africa.

Wombs As God's Laboratories: Pentecostal Discourses of Femininity in Zimbabwe

AbstractStudies of born-again Churches in Africa generally conclude that they help members embrace modernity. Their teachings provide the ideological bases for members to embrace changing material realities. Such studies are rather silent on the demands of this ideological frame on women and men. This article looks at two Zimbabwean women's organisations, Gracious Woman and Precious Stones, affiliated to Zimbabwe Assemblies of God in Africa and Family of God respectively. Using ethnographic methods, it argues that such organisations teach women domesticity and romanticise female subordination as glorifying God. They discourage individualism by exalting motherhood, wifehood and domesticity as service to God. These demands emerge at a time when life is changing drastically in urban areas as women get educated and enter the professions. Economically a small but growing number of black families have experienced some upward mobility—something these Churches encourage through ‘the gospel of prosperity’. Although accumulation and upward mobility free families from (traditional) kin obligations which the Churches encourage, women are discouraged from resisting the patriarchal yoke even when material circumstances make it possible. The organisations repackage patriarchy as Christian faith. The article concludes that if these Churches are concerned with managing modernity, then they see modernity as female subordination.

God’s self-revelation in the Old Testament and African concepts of God

This article has a twofold purpose: Firstly, to demonstrate that, contrary to what has been written about the subject so far, there is not only a single, generally valid concept of God in Africa, but that at least six models of concepts exist: God as an impersonal power, or as the first ancestor, or as the far-away Creator-King, or as the benevolent cosmic Grandfather, or as a transcendental, involved God, or as one of a pantheon. Secondly, the purpose of this article is to demonstrate that all these models, except to a certain degree the fifth one, differ radically from what God reveals about himself in the Old Testament, since he is a personal God, not part of creation, not genealogically related to man, yet near in his fellowship with man, but that he also judges those who sin against his will. Finally, he is unique.
