The Quest for Identity and Self-Discovery: A Study of Existential Crisis in Anuradha Roy’s The Folded Earth

The main objective of this term paper is to analyze the theme of existential crisis in Anuradha Roy’s famous novel The Folded Earth. The term “existential crisis” refers to facing the crisis of one's existence. This mainly talks about how people view themselves, as well as their meaning and goals in life. When people feel unsure about their purpose, options, or freedom in life, they are experiencing an existential crisis. Many persons who experience existential anxiety believe that life is meaningless and that there is no purpose to it. Confused thoughts concerning one's sense of identity might also result from an existential crisis. Some of the greatest existential philosophers and writers are Friedrick Nitzsche, Hegel, Soren Kierkegaard, Martin Heidegger, Jean-Paul Sartre, Karl Marx, Franz Kafka, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Albert Camus and Simon de Beauvoir, etc. This novel The Folded Earth is written by Roy, a recent Sahitya Akademi Award winner, which traces the story of a young woman Maya who creates a new life for herself in the foothills of the Himalayas. It deals with how she becomes alone in her life and questions her existence in this world. It is a time of internal turmoil for Maya when she struggles with self-identity, meaning, and purpose in life. She fights with many traumatic experiences like alienation, anxiety, depression, identity crisis, etc. Then, after leaving her tragedy behind, he decides to go for exploring a new life. Thus, this novel explores the "new woman identity" in modern-day society. The theme of this novel is based on political and religious conflicts in society, patriarchal suppression, inequality, the psychological instincts of a person, identity crisis, and the desire for a new peaceful life. Although the novel has various themes the effect of existential crisis is dominant over the novel.

Purpose, life satisfaction, and self-rated health in immigrant and non-immigrant adults

ABSTRACT Research into immigrant wellbeing and health has yielded evidence for both potential risks and the capacity for resilience of individuals moving to the United States. Limited research, though, has considered how immigrants may differ in their perceived commitment to a life direction and goals, known as sense of purpose. Moreover, research is needed on whether immigrants may be more likely to derive that purpose through social activism for change. The current study employed a nationwide sample of U. S. adults (N = 1973; 5.3% immigrants), who reported on their sense of purpose, activist purpose, self-rated health, and life satisfaction. Results indicated that immigrants did not significantly differ from native-born U. S. adults on levels for any of the primary variables. Sense of purpose was more strongly associated with life satisfaction for native-born than immigrant participants, although other associations were similar in magnitude across groups. Future research should further explore background predictors of sense of purpose among immigrant samples, as well as whether immigrants and native-born adults differ on alternative forms of purpose.

First-Generation College Students’ Intergenerational Narratives of Redemption and Upward Mobility

SYNOPSIS Objective. This study explored the role of intergenerational narratives in the motivations and goals of first-generation college students. Design. Reflexive thematic analysis examined narrative responses to open-ended questions regarding their motivations and goals for college enrollment. Results. Analyses generated a central theme: breaking the family cycle of poverty to achieve upward mobility. This theme included three subthemes: attaining financial stability, obtaining a higher level of education than their family, and challenging oppressive university and societal systems for a better future. The participants often approached their intergenerational narratives in two distinct ways: “self-initiated” and “parent-initiated.” In parent-initiated narratives, participants centered their parents in their intergenerational stories. They stated that their parents’ stories inspired them to attend college, break the cycle of poverty, and avoid the hardships their parents experienced. Conversely, in self-initiated narratives, participants centered themselves in the intergenerational stories. They expressed their aspirations to break the family cycle of poverty and avoid the challenges they and their families faced while growing up. Conclusions. These findings underscore how first-generation college students’ intergenerational redemption narratives shape their motivations for pursuing higher education and life goals.

Is happiness independent of income? Set point theory à la Kahneman

AbstractThe income–happiness nexus is paradoxical. One dataset shows that happiness tracks income, while another shows that, in rich countries, happiness does not. This paper focuses on the limits of set point theory (known also ‘hedonic treadmill’ or ‘hedonic adaptation’) to solve the income–happiness paradox. To keep it manageable, it focuses on Daniel Kahneman's attempt to solve the paradox. He first employs his distinction between ‘the experiencing self’ and ‘the remembering self’ to solve the paradox. While the distinction is useful for the study of heuristics, it is irrelevant for the question at hand, the solution of the income–happiness paradox. Sensing such irrelevance, Kahneman turns his attention to the ‘life evaluation’ measure. This measure ironically shows that happiness tracks income. However, Kahneman disputes such tracking, arguing instead that happiness tracks income only if people, when they were teenagers, designate income as a life goal. The appeal to ‘goals’ or ‘life plans’, however, is an endorsement of a sophisticated version of set point theory. Kahneman argues that happiness varies with the variation of the designated goal or life plan, not with income per se. However, if happiness varies with the designated goals or life plans, it ultimately means that happiness cannot be conceived as a set point. Thus, Kahneman's argument effectively sends us back to square one, failing to solve the income–happiness paradox.

A Mixed Methods Systematic Review of the Effectiveness, Acceptability, and Feasibility of Advanced Care Plans for Older Adults Without Life-Limiting Conditions

Context: Advance care planning (ACP) is a comprehensive procedure aimed at helping individuals understand and articulate their values, life goals, and preferences concerning future medical treatment. Despite extensive research on ACP in populations with terminal illnesses, dementia, and those in long-term care, there is a lack of focus on its impact among older adults without life-limiting conditions. Objectives: To investigate the effectiveness, acceptability, and feasibility of ACP for older adults without life-limiting conditions. Methods: We searched 11 electronic databases, spanning from inception to November 2023, complemented by extensive grey literature and reference searches. Rigorous quality assessments were conducted using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT). Our approach adopted a dynamic convergent mixed-methods design, incorporating thematic and narrative synthesis. Findings: From over 12,600 citations, a total of 16 studies, comprising four randomised controlled trials (RCTs), nine qualitative studies, and three mixed methods studies met the inclusion criteria. Limited findings indicate that ACP interventions are generally effective in improving document completion rates and reducing hospital readmissions. Acceptability and feasibility of these interventions were high, although significantly influenced by cultural and religious factors. Limitations: Evidence supporting the effectiveness, acceptability, and feasibility of ACP in reducing unplanned hospital admissions in older adults without life-limiting conditions was limited. We excluded observations based on unwell older people, though some material with unclear distinctions may have been included. Quality assessments revealed that one of four RCTs had a high risk of bias, three had unclear risks; all nine qualitative studies had low risk; and one of three mixed methods studies had low risk while two had unclear risks. Implications: Further targeted research is necessary to assess the intervention’s value for this population. Rigorous real-world evidence studies involving older adults without life-limiting conditions and their proxies is crucial to enabling providers to tailor ACPs to diverse populations, whilst respecting individuals’ religious and cultural beliefs.

‘진지한 여가’로서 중년여성들의 ‘라인댄스 무용단’ 활동 경험

Objectives The purpose of this study is to explore the experiences of middle-aged women participating in the ‘Line Dance Dance Company’ as a form of serious leisure. Methods This study aimed to understand the value and significance of line dance group activities in participants' lives. It employed a qualitative case study approach, specifically using a descriptive case study method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with participants involved in line dance group activities. A total of six cases were analyzed using repetitive comparative analysis methods to identify common themes and insights. The study provides a rich and detailed description of the meanings and values that participants derive from their involvement in these activities. Results First, the process of participating in line dance group activities was categorized into ‘glimpsing another world,’ ‘challenging: entering another world,’ ‘showing off oneself,’ and ‘re-challenging: entering another world.’ Through this process, the research participants' experiences can be interpreted as engaging in ‘serious leisure.’ Second, the meaning of the line dance group activity experience was derived as ‘discovering another version of oneself with passion and dedication,’ ‘expanding roles: being able to help,’ ‘restoring life subjectivity: living proactively for a wonderful self,’ and ‘happy life with a goal: preparing to be a wonderful grandmother.’ Conclusions Line dance company activities help participants discover their potential, enhance self-love, and maintain a positive perception of aging. In other words, these activities offer meaning and value beyond mere physical exercise, providing a serious and rewarding leisure experience. This study confirms that line dance group activities are valuable as they enable middle-aged women to anticipate their future with life subjectivity and goal setting. Therefore, programs that address various needs through group activities should be developed to serve as central points for middle-aged women's serious leisure activities.

Work-life Balance: An Essential Capability for Social Workers’ Well-being in Free State, South Africa

Social workers in South Africa and internationally promote the welfare of individuals, families, groups, and communities by attending to their social issues and needs. The advancement of this goal is intricately connected to professionals’ well-being. Drawing on qualitative interviews conducted in one of South Africa’s provinces, the Free State, and deploying the capability approach and work-family border theory, this study examines social workers’ conceptualisation of their well-being and the significance of a work-life balance in attaining well-being. It explores the many challenges faced by social workers in sustaining a balance between their personal and professional lives. A purposive sample of 18 participants consisting of eight practising social workers and ten student social workers was selected. Data was collected through individual semi-structured interviews. The findings from the study suggest that social workers understand their well-being in quite broad terms. Besides their physical and mental health, they conceive their well-being with regard to the satisfaction that comes with the accomplishment of various professional (work) and private (life) functionings. They, for instance, cherish growing as professionals, being effective helpers, having control and autonomy over their work, being supported by organisational structures, and having ample time for their private lives and families. However, in South Africa, working conditions characterised by a lack of resources, high caseloads, and poor salaries cause work-life imbalance and interfere with the achievement of social workers’ valued life goals and overall well-being.

“Surviving against the odds. The impact of peer support workers on a chronically suicidal adolescent in secure residential youth care: a single case report from the Netherlands”

ABSTRACT Background The use of peer support workers to support suicidal adolescents is underdeveloped. This study focuses on the effects of a one-year intervention with peer support workers on a chronically suicidal adolescent residing in a secure residential youth care facility in the Netherlands. Moreover, we explore the mechanisms that underpin the role of peer support workers in detail. Method This study employed a single case study design. We conducted seven semi-structured interviews with staff, peer support workers, and a chronically suicidal adolescent. The interviews were analysed using a thematic analysis. Results The results indicate that the suicidal tendencies of the adolescent decreased significantly one year after the peer support intervention compared to the initial baseline. Working mechanisms that underpinned the peer support intervention emphasized building meaningful and trust-based relationships, providing recognition and hope, and practical support from a recovery-oriented perspective. Conclusion The results suggest that peer support has a beneficial impact on the adolescent and treatment teams. Peer support workers contribute to a sense of belonging and connection, coping with suicidality, rediscovering life goals, and improving adolescent self-management. Barriers and facilitators to implementing peer support workers are also discussed.

Igniting A Spark: Fostering Dialectical Thinking With Plato’s Meno

Abstract: In this article, I present a three-stage teaching strategy for orienting first-time readers of the Platonic dialogues using the Meno as a case study. The approach assists students lacking a philosophical background to advance from personal reflection to developing more advanced analytical and interpretive skills. The first stage of the method invites students to contemplate their life goals in preparation for a structured class debate between relativistic and absolutist notions of success. The second stage employs in-class philosophical reading groups, where students engage with small passages from the Meno to develop their analytical skills in a supportive learning environment. The final stage consists of a two-part writing assignment in which students produce a line-by-line philosophical analysis of their passage along with an essay reconciling the antithetical arguments presented in their selection. By employing this multifaceted approach, students cultivate critical, analytical, and dialectical thinking in order to navigate the complexities of Plato's enigmatic dialogues.

Does the apple fall far from the tree? A meta-analysis linking parental factors to children's intrinsic and extrinsic goals.

Self-determination theory (Ryan & Deci, 2017) has highlighted the differential roles that intrinsic life goals (for personal growth, close relationships, community connections, and physical health) and extrinsic life goals (i.e., for wealth, image, and status) play in supporting well-being. Less is known about how orientations toward these two types of aspirations develop. It is likely that early environmental influences, namely one's parents, impact individuals' aspirations. We address this gap by systematically reviewing the links between relevant parents' characteristics and the intrinsic and extrinsic goals of their children. We identified 49 eligible reports. Children's intrinsic aspirations were higher when parents provided a need-supportive environment (characterized by support for autonomy, relatedness, and competence) and when they endorsed intrinsic aspirations themselves, whereas children's extrinsic aspirations were higher when parents exhibited extrinsic aspirations themselves, promoted the pursuit of extrinsic aspirations, and provided environments characterized by need frustration. Therefore, fostering basic psychological need satisfaction may support children's intrinsic aspiring. In addition, parents should also be mindful of their own extrinsic goals, as they may influence extrinsic aspirations in their children and possibly compromise their well-being over the long term. Self-realization as a Driver of Sustainable Social Development: Balancing Individual Goals and Collective Values

Self-realization is integral to the social aspect of sustainable development, as it enables individuals to boost mental health and personal well-being by achieving and enhancing their potential and life goals. This study explores how self-realization functions as a driver for sustainable social development in the face of adversity. The research, which involved 122 adult Ukrainians, utilized written surveys, statistical analysis, qualitative assessment, and ranking to collect data. Despite the persistent threats and crises, Ukrainians exhibit significant motivation and engagement in self-realization across various domains, including professional endeavors, family interactions, and parenting. The wartime environment has introduced new dimensions to self-realization, such as involvement in volunteering and charitable activities. Key areas of self-realization include professional and family roles, which highlight the effectiveness of personal fulfillment. Nonetheless, respondents encounter common challenges, such as procrastination, laziness, and emotional strain. The majority acknowledge the connection between their self-realization and sustainable social development, particularly its social dimensions. While self-actualization is essential for life fulfillment during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, it necessitates targeted psychological support to tackle individual-specific challenges. The Effect of Mindfulness and Loneliness on Sense of Purpose in Individuals in the Age of Quarter Life Crisis

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) represent a global effort to achieve sustainable prosperity for all, with a strong focus on the quality of the next generation, particularly the youth. The future of a nation is closely tied to the quality of its young population. Early adulthood is a crucial period for determining career paths and life goals, which directly impact personal development and self-quality. One of the critical challenges faced during this period is the quarter life crisis (QLC), characterized by confusion over life purpose. In Indonesia, data shows that more than half of youth experience QLC, typically occurring between the ages of 18 and 35. This study aims to explore the factors influencing a sense of purpose to offer effective strategies for addressing the quarter life crisis. The research was conducted using a quantitative approach with non-probability sampling and survey methods. The sample consisted of 196 respondents (71.7% female and 28.3% male). Data analysis was performed using multiple linear regression with the assistance of SPSS version 8.0 software. Results revealed that mindfulness and loneliness have a significant impact (p<0.05) on the sense of purpose in individuals experiencing QLC, with an R-squared value of 0.090, indicating a 9% influence. These findings highlight the need for targeted counseling and psychological support services to address the quarter life crisis. Providing counseling that focuses on enhancing mindfulness and reducing loneliness can help individuals strengthen their sense of purpose, ultimately enabling them to navigate this challenging life stage more effectively.

The Effectiveness of a Narrative Program Using Plotagon Studio Application in Improving Life Styles of First Year Intermediate Students

The study aimed to construct a narrative program using the Plotagon Studio application to improve life styles and determine its effectiveness on first year intermediate students. Life styles are defined as the individual's pattern or unique personal style in thinking, emotion, and behavior, which revolves around their life goal. Adler divided them into three abnormal styles (dependent style, dominant style, avoidant style) and one normal style (cooperative style) (R. B. Adler, Rodman, & Sévigny, 2006). The researcher adopted a quasi-experimental approach and depended on ADDIE model in constructing the program, where its validity and reliability were ensured. Moreover, the researcher constructed the study tool, which is a life styles scale of (60) items. The study results confirmed the effectiveness of the narrative program in improving life styles among first year intermediate students. The researcher introduced a number of recommendations and suggestions.

Особенности саморегуляции социокультурных девиаций молодежи

In the youth environment in transition conditions, processes related to the rethinking of life goals and ways of achieving them become more active. In social reality, deviant ways of achieving goals are presented in the form of meaningsjudgements, reflecting the principles of separation and self-assertion at the expense of others. In the article they are understood as sociocultural deviations. Their formation in social reality is conditioned by the contradictions forming in society. The selfregulation of sociocultural deviations is understood as a conscious choice by young people in their own self-determination of the principles of dissociation and selfaffirmation as optimal, from their point of view, in the emerging conditions of the ways of achieving the goals of life activity. Based on empirical research by the Centre for Sociology of Youth (Institute of Social and Political Research, Federal Research Centre for Sociology, Russian Academy of Sciences), the author considers the peculiarities of self-regulation of socio-cultural deviations of young people depending on their age, place of residence, religious identification, family and trust factor. Young people aged 15-17 are more often oriented in their life activities towards the choice in favour of sociocultural deviations than young people from older age groups. Respondents from low-income groups are more willing to use physical force in a dispute with opponents. In groups in which respondents conceptualise family as an instrumental value, young people are more likely to assert themselves at the expense of others and show disrespect for adults in order to achieve their goals than in groups in which family is conceptualised as a terminal value. Young people who do not trust others are more likely to focus on socio-cultural deviations to achieve their life goals, compared to respondents who build relationships with others on trust.

A systems approach to improving the organization's management quality and the manager's personal effectiveness

Subject. This article discusses a systems approach to improving the quality of management of an organization and the personal effectiveness of a manager. Objectives. The article aims to study the techniques and methods for improving the quality of management, which can be used for self-management, improving personal efficiency, ensuring the achievement of goals in professional activities and personal life. Methods. For the study, I used a content analysis, and abstraction methods. Results. Based on the analysis of publications devoted to various methods and approaches to improving the quality of management and personal effectiveness, including methods of neurolinguistic programming, the development of systems thinking and the use of a systems approach in making management decisions, the article presents the author-developed method Systems Solutions as a way to raise the effectiveness of self-management (personal effectiveness) using approaches that are successfully implemented in management. Conclusions and Relevance. Successful application of the systems approach in management is also applicable in self-management, and it can ensure the effective use of personal potential to achieve goals in various spheres of life and activity. The popularity of the systems approach is a reflection of the changes taking place in present-day society, the need to form a holistic world view in which a person feels an inextricable connection with the entire world around him.

Discipline is an attitude that shows a willingness to comply with and obey the provisions, rules and regulations that apply. To achieve life goals, especially in terms of worship and morals. Discipline will be formed by getting used to doing something good and doing it consistently and continuously. Therefore, instilling a disciplined attitude is very necessary for every educational institution. As-Sholchah Islamic Boarding School for Girls implements the habit of activities that are arranged in a fixed schedule and carried out consistently. The purpose of this study was to identify whether there is an influence of the habit of reading Ratib Al-Haddad on the discipline of students and to determine how much influence the habit of reading Ratib Al-Haddad has on the discipline of students. The type of research used is quantitative research. Hypothesis testing uses a simple linear regression test. The results of this study reveal the influence of the habit of reading Ratib Al-Haddad on discipline. The large influence of the habit of reading Ratib al-Haddad on the discipline of students at the As-Sholchah female Islamic boarding school based on simple linear regression analysis guided by R Square is 46%.

Interpersonal trust in a couple as a sociocultural value

The relevance of the research is the need to identify the features of reducing the value of interpersonal trust in a couple, which leads to a decrease in marriage rates among the Russian population.The problem of the research lies in the presence of deviations in interpersonal trust between men and women and the lack of scientifically based information about the attitude of subjects to trust as a sociocultural value, which prevents the development of effective measures to eliminate deviations in the intergender relationships of partners.The aim of the research is to identify the features of interpersonal trust in a couple as a traditional socio-cultural value.The research methods. The paper uses data from a sociological study conducted in 2024 in the Belgorod region by means of a questionnaire survey. With a quota sample, 1,155 respondents were interviewed.The Results. The study revealed that, for both men and women, the main reason for establishing trust was the presence of identity, individual similarity, common life goals, common interests, and the same rules of behavior. It was found that the majority of respondents trusted their partner much more than other people. The comparative analysis made it possible to talk about the relationships between the level of trust and the duration of the couple's existence. Thus, the lowest level of trust was typical for the young couples formed less than 6 months ago. And the highest level of trust was observed between subjects who had been together for more than 20 years. The correlation analysis led to the conclusion that the highest level of interpersonal trust was manifested in official married couples, and not in cohabitation and not in guest interaction.The Key findings. It has been concluded that following positive traditions and preserving sociocultural values in the interactions of representatives of different sexes is not presented as a cultural and historical relic, but, on the contrary, as a potential for further successful development of the institution of the family. It has been determined that interpersonal trust in a couple between is presented as a socio-cultural value, which largely determines the quality and stability of relationships and interactions between the subjects.

Developmental Trajectories of Intrinsic and Extrinsic Goals From Early to Late Adolescence and the Association with Internalizing and Externalizing Problems.

Although numerous studies have explored the causes and consequences of intrinsic and extrinsic life goals, the developmental trend of life goals during adolescence has not been well understood. To address this research gap, this study explored the developmental changes of the pursuit of intrinsic and extrinsic goals during early, middle, and late adolescence, and examined the relation between life goals and internalizing/externalizing problems from a developmental perspective. A total of 4703 Chinese adolescents from primary (N = 1819, 47.8% girls, Mage T1 = 9.34, SDage T1 = 0.58), middle (N = 1525, 47.5% girls, Mage T1 = 12.47, SDage T1 = 0.59), and high school (N = 1646, 51.9% girls, Mage T1 = 15.45, SDage T1 = 0.65) participated in this two-year, three-wave longitudinal study. The results revealed that the pursuit of intrinsic goals increased among primary school students, but decreased among middle and high school students. Conversely, the pursuit of extrinsic goals exhibited a consistent increase among adolescents in primary, middle, and high school. Girls have higher initial levels of intrinsic goals than boys in primary school, and boys' intrinsic goals declined faster than girls' in middle school. Additionally, the initial level and developmental rate of intrinsic goals among three developmental stages were significantly associated with internalizing/externalizing problems, with lower initial level, slower growth rate, and faster decline rate being associated with more internalizing and externalizing problems. The significant association between the initial level and developmental rate of extrinsic goals and internalizing/externalizing problems were mainly observed among late adolescents, with higher initial level and growth rate being associated with more internalizing and externalizing problems. These findings delineate the differences in developmental trends between intrinsic and extrinsic goals, underscore the robust relation between intrinsic goals and internalizing/externalizing problems, and figure out the development-stage differences in the relation between extrinsic goals and internalizing/externalizing problems.

Abstract C005: Predictors of advance care planning documentation in female patients with breast cancer: A multilevel model analysis

Abstract Background: Advance care planning (ACP) is a process that supports adults at any age or stage of health in understanding and sharing their personal values, life goals, and preferences regarding future medical care. Likewise, ACP is associated with multiple benefits, such as lower rates of hospitalizations and reduced futile, aggressive cancer treatment at the end of life. However, ACP rates remain low in the U.S., especially for patients with advanced cancer. Despite being more likely to be diagnosed at advanced stages and hospitalized due to advanced cancer with poor prognosis, the Black and Hispanic/Latino populations continue to have meager rates of ACP. Research has shown that both individual-level and systems-level factors contribute to these racial disparities in ACP. Considering these disparities among vulnerable populations, interventions that increase ACP among minority patients with cancer are needed. Objective: To analyze using multilevel model analysis the predictors of ACP documentation in female patients with breast cancer over 5 years in the UChicago Health System. Methods: Using the Clinical Data Research Warehouse, this study included women diagnosed with breast cancer (N=7,814) from 2016 to 2021. Descriptive statistics were performed to characterize ACP, and potential differences in ACP rates among control variables were assessed using odds ratio (OR) estimations. Significantly correlated variables were included as covariates in the multivariate analyses through a logistic regression model. The multilevel random-effects (mixed-effects) model, using restricted maximum likelihood estimation, examined the pattern of ACP documentation; in the multilevel model, level 1 modeled the changes in individual ACP documentation, and level 2 included the between-subjects effects of the predictors of documentation. Results: 13.76% of women with breast cancer filled out at least one type of ACP documentation, 4.25% filled out the Power of Attorney, 5.75% filled out the Advance Directive, and 8.92% filled out the Code Status. Increasing age and being black/African-American seem to be related to an increased likelihood of completion of at least one type of ACP documentation. While increasing BMI and outpatient services seem to be related to a decrease in the likelihood of completing at least one type of ACP documentation. Conclusion: Understanding the factors related to ACP documentation will allow us to manage them and improve their completion. These results will help to inform the development of tools to increase the integration of ACP into care, especially those that are technology-based. Further work could include designing a predictive model to prioritize patients requiring ACP.
