Hydrosilylation of Allyl Ethers in the Presence of Platinum(II) Immobilized on Polymethylene Sulfide

The reactions of allyl ethyl, allyl butyl, allyl glycidyl, allyl benzyl, and allyl phenyl ethers with 1,1,3,3-tetra-methyldisiloxane in the presence of platinum(II) immobilized on polymethylene sulfide have been studied.

Comprehensive Understanding of Polyester Stereocomplexation.

We report a comprehensive understanding of the stereoselective interaction between two opposite enantiomeric polyesters prepared from the regioselective copolymerization of chiral terminal epoxides and cyclic anhydrides. For many of the resultant polyesters, the interactions between polymer chains of opposite chirality are stronger than those of polymer chains with the same chirality, resulting in the formation of a stereocomplex with an enhanced melting point (Tm) and crystallinity. The backbone, tacticity, steric hindrance of the pendant group, and molecular weight of the polyesters have significant effects on stereocomplex formation. Bulky substituent groups favor stereocomplexation, resulting in a greater rise in Tm in comparison to the component enantiomeric polymers. The stereocomplex assembly of discrete (R)- and (S)-poly(phenyl glycidyl ether-alt-phthalic anhydride)s oligomers revealed that the minimum degree of polymerization required for stereocomplex formation is five. Raman spectroscopy and solid-state NMR studies indicate that stereocomplex formation significantly restricts the local mobilities of C═O and C-H groups along the backbone of chains. The reduced mobility results in the enhanced spin-lattice relaxation time and both 1H and 13C downfield shifts due to the strong intermolecular interactions between R- and S-chains.

KINETICS AND MECHANISM OF ESTERIFICATION OF MONOEPOXIES

ABSTRACT The esterification of monoepoxy diluents (phenyl, cresyl, and butyl glycidyl ethers) and acrylic acid in presence of triphenylphosphine as catalyst was performed at 70 ○, 75 ○, 80 ○, 85 ○, and 90 ○C, and it followed first-order kinetics. The reactivity of aromatic monoepoxies was found to be higher than aliphatic, due to the inductive effect of phenyl and butyl groups. The activation energy of the esterification of the monoepoxy increases as Pv < Cv < Bv and varies from 67 to 82 KJ/mole. The specific rate constants were found to obey the Arrhenius expression. The kinetic and thermodynamic parameters viz., activation energy, frequency factor, entropy, enthalpy, and free energy revealed that the reaction was spontaneous and irreversible, resulting in a highly ordered, activated complex. A suitable mechanism is proposed and discussed.

Glass transition of an epoxy resin. A wideband dielectric investigation

The dynamics of an epoxy resin, poly(phenyl glycidyl ether-co-formaldehyde), has been investigated in the supercooled and glassy phases by wideband dielectric spectroscopy (10/sup -2/ to 3/spl times/10/sup 9/ Hz) and compared with that of the previously investigated epoxy resin, diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A. The temperature evolution of the dynamics of the system is monitored through the characteristic parameters of the relaxations, namely the relaxation times, the relaxation strengths and the shape parameters. Two transition regions are revealed: the glass transition and the split between structural and fast secondary relaxation, where the onset of the structural relaxation is located also.

Phenyl acrylates and divinyl benzene cross‐linked copolymers as basic novel supports: Synthesis and characterization

AbstractSuspension Copolymerization of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), phenyl methacrylate (PhMA), 2,4,6‐tribromophenyl acrylate (TBPA), and 4‐acetylphenyl acrylate (APA) with divinyl benzene (DVB) was carried out at 80 ± 1°C in aqueous medium, as basic supports for possible applications in polymer‐supported chemistry. The resulting copolymer heads were characterized with various techniques. The identification of monomers in the copolymer was attempted using FTIR and 13C‐CP/MAS‐NMR spectroscopic techniques. The optical and scanning electron microscopic methods were used to study the shape, size, and surface morphology of the beaded copolymers. The particle‐size distribution was measured, and the average particle size of the particulate copolymers were carried out using a Malvern particle‐size analyzer. The decomposition temperatures and energy of activation involved in the thermal degradation were studied with thermogravimetry. The solvent imbibition of the polymer supports in various solvents was carried out with a centrifuge method.
