The development and pathogenicity of Fasciola hepatica was compared in promezathine-treated and untreated groups of sheep. The treated group showed delayed onset of circulatory eosinophilia and liveweight loss, consistently lower levels of plasma glutamate dehydrogenase, and, at 8 to 10 weeks after infection, a lower loss of 51 Cr-labelled plasma in the faeces. At post-mortem examination, the treated sheep showed a less severe hepatitis, the flukes were of greater mean length, and there was evidence of delayed entry to the bile ducts. Fluke recoveries were similar in the two groups.
