The D-meson cross sections as a function of transverse momentum (pT) are provided with improved precision and granularity. The ratios of pT-differential meson production cross sections based on this publication and on measurements at different rapidity and collision energy provide a constraint on gluon parton distribution functions at low values of Bjorken-x (10−5–10−4). A significantly larger fraction of charm quarks hadronising to baryons is found compared to e+e− and ep collisions. Constraining the top-quark mass within the global MSHT PDF fit

We examine the ability of experimental measurements of top-quark pair production to constrain both the top-quark mass and the strong coupling within the global MSHT parton distribution function (PDF) fit. Specifically, we consider ATLAS and CMS measurements of differential distributions taken at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, as well as tbar{t} total cross section data taken at a variety of experiments, and compare to theoretical predictions including next-to-next-to-leading order corrections. We find that supplementing the global fit with this additional information results in relatively strong constraints on the top-quark mass, and is also able to bound the strong coupling in a limited fashion. Our final result is m_t=173.0pm 0.6~textrm{GeV} and is compatible with the world average pole mass extracted from cross section measurements of 172.5pm 0.7~textrm{GeV} by the Particle Data Group. We also study the effect of different top-quark masses on the gluon parton distribution function, finding changes at high x which nonetheless lie within the large PDF uncertainties in this region.

Exclusive meets inclusive particle production at small Bjorken xB : How to relate exclusive measurements to PDFs based on evolution equations

Exclusive heavy-vector-meson photoproduction is a prominent signal in collider experiments with hadron beams. At the highest photon-hadron collision energies, this process is considered as a candidate to constrain gluon parton distribution functions (PDFs) at small longitudinal momentum fractions. However, in the framework of collinear factorisation, exclusive particle production is described in terms of generalised parton distributions (GPDs). In this contribution, we investigate at the leading order in $\alpha_s$ the connection between GPDs and PDFs. Our main result is a proposal to quantify the systematic uncertainty inherent to this connection. We put our approach into context with respect to the Shuavev transform. Our uncertainty estimate can be straightforwardly adapted to higher fixed orders and small-$x$ resummations. The question of extrapolating GPDs to vanishing skewness is paramount for the programme of the Electron Ion Collider (EIC), notably for the extraction of the radial distributions of partons.

Polarized gluon distribution in the proton from holographic light-front QCD

We obtain the gluon parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the proton within the extended light-front holographic QCD framework, where the proton couples with the spin-two Pomeron in Anti-de Sitter space, together with constraints imposed by the Veneziano model. The gluon helicity asymmetry, after satisfying the perturbative QCD constraints at small and large longitudinal momentum regions, agrees with existing experimental measurements. The polarized gluon distribution is consistent with global analyses. We predict the gluon helicity contribution to the proton spin, $\Delta G=0.221^{+0.056}_{-0.044}$, close to the recent analysis with updated data sets and PHENIX measurement and the lattice QCD simulations. We subsequently present the unpolarized and polarized gluon generalized parton distributions in the proton.

Planck formula for the gluon parton distribution in the proton

In this paper, we describe the gluon parton distribution function (PDF) in the proton, deduced by data from the ATLAS and HERA experiments, in the framework of the parton statistical model. The best fit parameters involved in the Planck formula that describes the gluon distribution are consistent with the results obtained from analysis of LHC deep inelastic proton–proton scattering processes. Remarkably, the agreement between the statistical model and the experimental gluon distributions is obtained with the same value of the “temperature” parameter [Formula: see text] found by fitting the valence parton distributions from deep inelastic scattering. This result corroborates the validity of the statistical approach in the gluon sector.

Parton distributions need representative sampling

In global QCD fits of parton distribution functions (PDFs), a large part of the estimated uncertainty on the PDFs originates from the choices of parametric functional forms and fitting methodology. We argue that these types of uncertainties can be underestimated with common PDF ensembles in high-stake measurements at the Large Hadron Collider and Tevatron. A fruitful approach to quantify these uncertainties is to view them as arising from sampling of allowed PDF solutions in a multidimensional parametric space. This approach applies powerful insights gained in recent statistical studies of large-scale population surveys and quasi-Monte Carlo integration methods. In particular, PDF fits may be affected by the big data paradox, which stipulates that more experimental data do not automatically raise the accuracy of PDFs---close attention to the data quality and sampling of possible PDF solutions is as essential. To test if the sampling of the PDF uncertainty of an experimental observable is truly representative of all acceptable solutions, we introduce a technique (``a hopscotch scan'') based on a combination of parameter scans and stochastic sampling. With this technique, we examine the PDF uncertainty on key LHC cross sections at 13 TeV obtained with the public NNPDF4.0 fitting code, while accounting for the likelihood distribution. We show that the uncertainties on the charm distribution at a large momentum fraction $x$ and gluon PDF at small $x$ are enlarged. In PDF ensembles obtained in the analytic minimization (Hessian) formalism, the tolerance on the PDF uncertainty must be based on sufficiently complete sampling of PDF functional forms and choices of the experiments.

Gauge Invariance of Non-Abelian Field Strength Correlators: The Axial Gauge Puzzle.

Many transport coefficients of the quark-gluon plasma and nuclear structure functions can be written as gauge invariant correlation functions of non-Abelian field strengths dressed with Wilson lines. We discuss the applicability of axial gauge n·A=0 to calculate them. In particular, we address issues that appear when one attempts to trivialize the Wilson lines in the correlation functions by gauge fixing. We find it is always impossible to completely remove the gauge fields n·A in Wilson lines that extend to infinity in the n direction by means of gauge transformations. We show how the obstruction appears in an explicit example of a perturbative calculation, and we also explain it more generally from the perspective of the path integral that defines the theory. Our results explain why the two correlators that define the heavy quark and quarkonium transport coefficients, which are seemingly equal in axial gauge, are actually different physical quantities of the quark-gluon plasma and have different values. Furthermore, our findings provide insights into the difference between two inequivalent gluon parton distribution functions.

Parton distribution functions and QCD coupling constant from LHC and non-LHC data

We present a new QCD analysis of parton distribution functions (PDFs) at next-to-leading order (NLO) and next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). In the present paper, the role of special types of experimental measurements for extracting PDFs is investigated, and simultaneously the values of the strong coupling constant are determined. Essential elements of this QCD analysis are the HERA combined data as a base, heavy-quark cross-section measurement together with Tevatron data on jet production and H1 and ZEUS jet cross sections as ``non-LHC'' data, and especially the ``LHC'' dataset for top-quark and jet cross sections. These different datasets have allowed detailed information at low $x$, providing worthwhile information on the nucleon's flavor, and have played an important role for some PDFs at large-$x$ and strong coupling constant. Since the large-$x$ gluon PDF benefits from an accurate determination of quark PDFs, we have enough motivation to focus on the top-quark production and jet cross-section measurements from LHC to find the impact of these data on the gluon PDF and strong coupling constant. These experimental data have an impact on the relative uncertainties of PDF. The gluon PDF at large $x$ and the values of ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{s}({M}_{Z}^{2})$ are affected significantly. Although the main motivation of this paper is to focus on the gluon PDF and its uncertainty at large-$x$, giving notice to heavy PDF behavior in this region is also very important. We study the intrinsic charm (IC) using the BHPS model together with our extracted extrinsic charm PDF at large $x$, which can be very worthwhile for future experiments at the LHC.

Semi-inclusive diffractive deep inelastic scattering at small x

Inspired by a recent study of Iancu, Mueller and Triantafyllopoulos [1] and earlier papers by Golec-Biernat and Wusthoff [2,3], we propose semi-inclusive diffractive deep inelastic scattering (SIDDIS) to investigate the gluon tomography in the nucleon and nuclei at small-$x$. The relevant diffractive quark and gluon parton distribution functions (DPDF) can be computed in terms of the color dipole S-matrices in the fundamental and adjoint representations, respectively. Novel correlations from the gluon tomography in the dipole S-matrix can be experimentally studied through the DPDFs in these processes at the future electron-ion collider (EIC).

Gluon pseudo-distributions at short distances

We present the results that are necessary in the ongoing lattice calculations of the gluon parton distribution functions (PDFs) within the pseudo-PDF approach. We identify the two-gluon correlator functions that contain the invariant amplitude determining the gluon PDF in the light-cone z^2 \to 0z2→0 limit, and perform one-loop calculations in the coordinate representation in an explicitly gauge-invariant form. Ultraviolet (UV) terms, which contain \ln (-z^2)ln(−z2)-dependence cancel in the reduced Ioffe-time distribution (ITD), and we obtain the matching relation between the reduced ITD and the light-cone ITD. Using a kernel form, we get a direct connection between lattice data for the reduced ITD and the normalized gluon PDF.

A novel formulation of the unintegrated gluon distribution for DIS

In this talk, we revisit inclusive DIS in the small x limit and derive a new factorization formula that accounts for leading powers in both Bjorken and Regge limits. In this semi-classical description, we obtain a new unintegrated gluon distribution which encompasses both the dipole operator and the gluon Parton Distribution Function with an explicit dependence on the longitudinal momentum fraction x.

Longitudinal Z-boson polarization and the Higgs boson production cross-section

We present a study of the LHC (and HL-LHC) potential towards a precise determination of the gluon parton distribution function of the proton at intermediate Bjorken-xx from measurements of Drell-Yan production. To this extent, we exploit a clean and theoretically well predicted observable: the Drell-Yan lepton angular coefficient A_0A0, associated with the longitudinal polarization of the Z boson. Through a detailed numerical analysis using the open-source xFitter platform, we illustrate how this observable can provide significant sensitivity over current determinations of the gluon PDF, and a reduction in the PDF uncertainty on the Higgs boson production cross-section by a factor of over 50%.

Impact of jet-production data on the next-to-next-to-leading-order determination of HERAPDF2.0 parton distributions

The HERAPDF2.0 ensemble of parton distribution functions (PDFs) was introduced in 2015. The final stage is presented, a next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) analysis of the HERA data on inclusive deep inelastic ep scattering together with jet data as published by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations. A perturbative QCD fit, simultaneously of alpha _s(M_Z^2) and the PDFs, was performed with the result alpha _s(M_Z^2)= 0.1156 pm 0.0011~mathrm{(exp)}~ ^{+0.0001}_{-0.0002}~ mathrm{(model}mathrm{+ parameterisation)}~ pm 0.0029~mathrm{(scale)}. The PDF sets of HERAPDF2.0Jets NNLO were determined with separate fits using two fixed values of alpha _s(M_Z^2), alpha _s(M_Z^2)=0.1155 and 0.118, since the latter value was already chosen for the published HERAPDF2.0 NNLO analysis based on HERA inclusive DIS data only. The different sets of PDFs are presented, evaluated and compared. The consistency of the PDFs determined with and without the jet data demonstrates the consistency of HERA inclusive and jet-production cross-section data. The inclusion of the jet data reduced the uncertainty on the gluon PDF. Predictions based on the PDFs of HERAPDF2.0Jets NNLO give an excellent description of the jet-production data used as input.

Predictions of exclusive ϒ photoproduction at the LHC and future colliders

The cross section for exclusive $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Upsilon}}$ ultraperipheral photoproduction at present and future colliders is determined using the low $x$ gluon parton distribution function extracted from an analysis of exclusive $J/\ensuremath{\psi}$ measurements performed at the Hadron-Electron Ring Accelerator and the Large Hadron Collider. Predictions are given at next-to-leading order in collinear factorization over a wide $\ensuremath{\gamma}p$ centre-of-mass energy range, calculated assuming the nonrelativistic approximation for the $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Upsilon}}$ wave function, and with skewing corrections incorporated.

Constraints on gluon distribution functions in the nucleon and nucleus from open charm hadron production at the Electron-Ion Collider

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory will be a precision Quantum Chromodynamics machine that will enable a vast physics program with electron+proton/ion collisions across a broad center-of-mass range. Measurements of hard probes such as heavy flavor in deep inelastic scatterings will be an essential component to the EIC physics program and are one of the detector R\&D driving aspects. In this paper we study the projected statistical precision of open charm hadron production through exclusive hadronic channel reconstruction with a silicon detector concept currently being developed using a PYTHIA-based simulation. We further study the impact of possible intrinsic charm in the proton on projected data, and estimate the constraint on the nuclear gluon parton distribution function (PDF) from the charm structure functions $F_{2}^{c\overline{c}}$ in $e$+Au collisions using a Bayesian PDF re-weighting technique. Our studies show the EIC will be capable delivering an unprecedented measurement of charm hadron production across a broad kinematic region and will provide strong constraints to both intrinsic charm and nuclear gluon PDFs.

Gluon parton densities in soft-wall AdS/QCD

We study the gluon parton densities [parton distribution functions (PDFs), transverse momentum distributions (TMDs), generalized parton distributions (GPDs)] and form factors in soft-wall AdS/QCD. We show that the power behavior of gluon parton distributions and form factors at large values of the light-cone variable and large values of square momentum is consistent with quark counting rules. We also show that the transverse momentum distributions derived in our approach obey the model-independent Mulders-Rodrigues inequalities without referring to specific model parameters. All gluon parton distributions are defined in terms of the unpolarized and polarized gluon PDFs and profile functions. The latter are related to gluon PDFs via differential equations.

Self-consistent determination of proton and nuclear PDFs at the Electron Ion Collider

We quantify the impact of unpolarized lepton-proton and lepton-nucleus inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) cross section measurements from the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) on the proton and nuclear parton distribution functions (PDFs). To this purpose, we include neutral- and charged-current DIS pseudodata in a self-consistent set of proton and nuclear global PDF determinations based on the NNPDF methodology. We demonstrate that the EIC measurements will reduce the uncertainty of the light quark PDFs of the proton at large values of the momentum fraction $x$ and, more significantly, of the quark and gluon PDFs of heavy nuclei, especially at small and large $x$. We illustrate the implications of the improved precision of nuclear PDFs for the interaction of ultrahigh energy cosmic neutrinos with matter.

Nucleon gluon distribution function from 2 + 1 + 1-flavor lattice QCD

The parton distribution functions (PDFs) provide process-independent information about the quarks and gluons inside hadrons. Although the gluon PDF can be obtained from a global fit to experimental data, it is not constrained well in the large-[Formula: see text] region. Theoretical gluon-PDF studies are much fewer than those of the quark PDFs. In this work, we present the first lattice-QCD results that access the [Formula: see text]-dependence of the gluon unpolarized PDF of the nucleon. The lattice calculation is carried out with nucleon momenta up to 2.16 GeV, lattice spacing [Formula: see text] fm, and with valence pion masses of 310 and 690 MeV. We use reduced Ioffe-time distributions to cancel the renormalization and implement a one-loop perturbative pseudo-PDF gluon matching. We neglect mixing of the gluon operator with the quark singlet sector. Our matrix-element results in coordinate space are consistent with those obtained from the global PDF fits of CT18 NNLO and NNPDF3.1 NNLO. Our fitted gluon PDFs at both pion masses are consistent with global fits in the [Formula: see text] region.

Quarkonium semiclassical transport in quark-gluon plasma: factorization and quantum correction

We study quarkonium transport in the quark-gluon plasma by using the potential nonrelativistic QCD (pNRQCD) effective field theory and the framework of open quantum systems. We argue that the coupling between quarkonium and the thermal bath is weak using separation of scales, so the initial density matrix of the total system factorizes and the time evolution of the subsystem is Markovian. We derive the semiclassical Boltzmann equation for quarkonium by applying a Wigner transform to the Lindblad equation and carrying out a semiclassical expansion. We resum relevant interactions to all orders in the coupling constant at leading power of the nonrelativistic and multipole expansions. The derivation is valid for both weakly coupled and strongly coupled quark-gluon plasmas. We find reaction rates in the transport equation factorize into a quarkonium dipole transition function and a chromoelectric gluon distribution function. For the differential reaction rate, the definition of the momentum dependent chromoelectric gluon distribution function involves staple-shaped Wilson lines. For the inclusive reaction rate, the Wilson lines collapse into a straight line along the real time axis and the distribution becomes momentum independent. The relation between the two Wilson lines is analogous to the relation between the Wilson lines appearing in the gluon parton distribution function (PDF) and the gluon transverse momentum dependent parton distribution function (TMDPDF). The centrality dependence of the quarkonium nuclear modification factor measured by experiments probes the momentum independent distribution while the transverse momentum dependence and measurements of the azimuthal angular anisotropy may be able to probe the momentum dependent one. We discuss one way to indirectly constrain the quarkonium in-medium real potential by using the factorization formula and lattice calculations. The leading quantum correction to the semiclassical transport equation of quarkonium is also worked out. The study can be easily generalized to quarkonium transport in cold nuclear matter, which is relevant for quarkonium production in eA collisions in the future Electron-Ion Collider.

Impact of dijet and D-meson data from 5.02 TeV p+Pb collisions on nuclear PDFs

We discuss the new constraints on gluon parton distribution function (PDF) in lead nucleus, derivable with the Hessian PDF reweighting method from the 5.02 TeV p+Pb measurements of dijet (CMS) and D0-meson (LHCb) nuclear modification ratios. The impact is found to be significant, placing stringent constraints in the mid- and previously unconstrained small-x regions. The CMS dijet data confirm the existence of gluon anti-shadowing and the onset of small-x shadowing, as well as reduce the gluon PDF uncertainties in the larger-x region. The gluon constraints from the LHCb D0 data, reaching down to x ∼ 10−5 and derived in a NLO perturbative QCD approach, provide a remarkable reduction of the small-x uncertainties with a strong direct evidence of gluon shadowing. Furthermore, we find a good description of the data even down to zero D0-meson transverse momentum within a purely DGLAP-based approach without a need for imposing any non-linear effects. Importantly, the constraints obtained from the dijet and D0 data are mutually fully consistent, supporting the universality of nuclear PDFs in hard-scattering processes.
