E-XQR-30: The evolution of Mg ii, C ii, and O i across 2 < z < 6

ABSTRACT Intervening metal absorbers in quasar spectra at z > 6 can be used as probes to study the chemical enrichment of the Universe during the Epoch of Reionization. This work presents the comoving line densities (dn/dX) of low-ionization absorbers, namely, Mg ii (2796 Å), C ii (1334 Å), and O i (1302 Å) across 2 < z < 6 using the E-XQR-30 metal absorber catalogue prepared from 42 XSHOOTER quasar spectra at 5.8 < z < 6.6. Here, we analyse 280 Mg ii (1.9 < z < 6.4), 22 C ii (5.2 < z < 6.4), and 10 O i (5.3 < z < 6.4) intervening absorbers, thereby building up on previous studies with improved sensitivity of 50 per cent completeness at an equivalent width of W > 0.03 Å. For the first time, we present the comoving line densities of 131 weak (W < 0.3 Å) intervening Mg ii absorbers at 1.9 < z < 6.4 which exhibit constant evolution with redshift similar to medium (0.3 < W < 1.0 Å) absorbers. However, the cosmic mass density of Mg ii – dominated by strong Mg ii systems – traces the evolution of global star formation history from redshift 1.9 to 5.5. E-XQR-30 also increases the absorption path-length by a factor of 50 per cent for C ii and O i whose line densities show a rising trend towards z > 5, in agreement with previous works. In the context of a decline in the metal enrichment of the Universe at z > 5, the overall evolution in the incidence rates of absorption systems can be explained by a weak – possibly soft fluctuating – ultraviolet background. Our results, thereby, provide evidence for a late reionization continuing to occur in metal-enriched and therefore, biased regions in the Universe.

Likelihood of white dwarf binaries to dominate the astrophysical gravitational wave background in the mHz band

Context. The astrophysical gravitational wave background (AGWB) is a collective signal of astrophysical gravitational wave sources dominated by compact binaries. One key science goal of current and future gravitational wave detectors is to obtain its measurement. Aims. We aim to determine the population of compact binaries dominating the AGWB in the mHz band. We revisit and update an earlier work by Farmer & Phinney (2003, MNRAS, 346, 1197) to model the astrophysical gravitational wave background sourced by extragalactic white dwarf binaries in the mHz frequency band. Methods. We calculated the signal using a single-metallicity model for the white dwarf population in the Universe using the global star formation history. Results. We estimate the white dwarf AGWB amplitude to be ∼60% higher than the earlier estimate. We also find that the overall shape of the white dwarf AGWB shows a good fit with a broken power law combined with an exponential cut-off. Conclusions. We compare our results to present-day best estimates for the background due to black hole and neutron star binaries, finding that the white dwarf component is likely to dominate in the mHz band. We provide an order-of-magnitude estimate that explains this hierarchy and we comment on the implications for future missions that aim to detect the AGWB. We also note that the black hole AGWB may only be detectable at high frequency. We outline several improvements that can be made to our estimate, however, these points are unlikely to change our main conclusion, which posits that the white dwarf AGWB dominates the mHz band.

Post-processing of galaxies due to major cluster mergers

The environments of galaxy clusters that underwent a recent (≤3 Gyr) major merger are harsher than those of dynamically relaxed clusters due to the global hydrodynamical disturbance and the merger-shock-heated intracluster medium. However, the impact of such extreme cluster interactions on the member galaxy properties is not very well constrained. We explore the integrated star formation properties of galaxies through galaxy colours as well as the morphology buildup in three nearby (0.04 < z < 0.07) young (∼0.6−1 Gyr) post-merger clusters – A3667, A3376, and A168 – and seven relaxed clusters to disentangle merger-induced post-processing signatures from the expected effects of high-density cluster environments. Exploiting optical spectroscopy and photometry from the OmegaWINGS survey, we find that post-merger clusters are evolved systems with uniform spiral fractions, a uniform fraction of blue galaxies, and constant scatter in the colour–magnitude relations, a regularity that is absent in dynamically relaxed clusters. While no clear merger-induced signatures were revealed in the global colours of galaxies, we conclude that different global star formation histories of dynamically relaxed clusters lead to considerable scatter in galaxy properties, resulting in the pre-merger cluster environment potentially contaminating any merger-induced signal of galaxy properties. We find red spirals to be common in both post-merger and relaxed clusters, while post-merger clusters appear to host a non-negligible population of blue early-type galaxies. We propose that while such merging cluster systems absorb extra cosmic web populations hitherto not part of the original merging subclusters, a ∼1 Gyr timescale is possibly too short see changes in the global colours and morphologies of galaxies.

Thesan-hr: galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization in warm dark matter, fuzzy dark matter, and interacting dark matter

ABSTRACT Using high-resolution cosmological radiation-hydrodynamic (RHD) simulations (thesan-hr), we explore the impact of alternative dark matter (altDM) models on galaxies during the Epoch of Reionization. The simulations adopt the IllustrisTNG galaxy formation model. We focus on altDM models that exhibit small-scale suppression of the matter power spectrum, namely warm dark matter (WDM), fuzzy dark matter (FDM), and interacting dark matter (IDM) with strong dark acoustic oscillations (sDAO). In altDM scenarios, both the halo mass functions and the ultraviolet luminosity functions at z ≳ 6 are suppressed at the low-mass/faint end, leading to delayed global star formation and reionization histories. However, strong non-linear effects enable altDM models to ‘catch up’ with cold dark matter (CDM) in terms of star formation and reionization. The specific star formation rates are enhanced in halos below the half-power mass in altDM models. This enhancement coincides with increased gas abundance, reduced gas depletion times, more compact galaxy sizes, and steeper metallicity gradients at the outskirts of the galaxies. These changes in galaxy properties can help disentangle altDM signatures from a range of astrophysical uncertainties. Meanwhile, it is the first time that altDM models have been studied in RHD simulations of galaxy formation. We uncover significant systematic uncertainties in reionization assumptions on the faint-end luminosity function. This underscores the necessity of accurately modeling the small-scale morphology of reionization in making predictions for the low-mass galaxy population. Upcoming James Webb Space Telescope imaging surveys of deep lensed fields hold potential for uncovering the faint low-mass galaxy population, which could provide constraints on altDM models.

A self-consistent semi-analytic model for Population III star formation in minihaloes

ABSTRACT The formation of the first stars marks a watershed moment in the history of our Universe. As the first luminous structures, these stars (also known as Population III, or Pop III stars) seed the first galaxies and begin the process of reionization. We construct an analytic model to self-consistently trace the formation of Pop III stars inside minihaloes in the presence of the fluctuating ultraviolet background, relic dark matter (DM)-baryon relative velocities from the early universe, and an X-ray background, which largely work to suppress cooling of gas and delay the formation of this first generation of stars. We demonstrate the utility of this framework in a semi-analytic model for early star formation that also follows the transition between Pop III and Pop II star formation inside these haloes. Using our new prescription for the criteria allowing Pop III star formation, we follow a population of DM haloes from z = 50 through z = 6 and examine the global star formation history, finding that each process defines its own key epoch: (i) the stream velocity dominates at the highest redshifts (z ≳ 30), (ii) the UV background sets the tone at intermediate times (30 ≳ z ≳ 15), and (iii) X-rays control the end of Pop III star formation at the latest times (z ≲ 15). In all of our models, Pop III stars continue to form down to z ∼ 7–10, when their supernovae will be potentially observable with forthcoming instruments. Finally, we identify the signatures of variations in the Pop III physics in the global 21-cm spin–flip signal of atomic hydrogen.

Did the Milky Way just light up? The recent star formation history of the Galactic disc

We map the stellar age distribution (≲1 Gyr) across a 6 kpc × 6 kpc area of the Galactic disc in order to constrain our Galaxy’s recent star formation history. Our modelling draws on a sample that encompasses all presumed disc O-, B-, and A-type stars (∼500 000 sources) with G < 16. To be less sensitive to reddening, we did not forward-model the detailed CMD distribution of these stars; instead, we forward-modelled the K-band absolute magnitude distribution, n(MK), among stars with MK < 0 and Teff > 7000 K at certain positions x in the disc as a step function with five age bins, b(τ | x, α), logarithmically spaced in age from τ = 5 Myr to τ ∼ 1 Gyr. Given a set of isochrones and a Kroupa initial mass function, we sampled b(τ | x, α) to maximise the likelihood of the data n(MK | x, α), accounting for the selection function. This results in a set of mono-age stellar density maps across a sizeable portion of the Galactic disc. These maps show that some, but not all, spiral arms are reflected in overdensities of stars younger than 500 Myr. The maps of the youngest stars (< 10 Myr) trace major star-forming regions. The maps at all ages exhibit an outward density gradient and distinct spiral-like spatial structure, which is qualitatively similar on large scales among the five age bins. When summing over the maps’ areas and extrapolating to the whole disc, we find an effective star formation rate over the last 10 Myr of ≈ 3.3 M⊙ yr−1, higher than previously published estimates that had not accounted for unresolved binaries. Remarkably, our stellar age distribution implies that the star formation rate has been three times lower throughout most of the last Gyr, having risen distinctly only in the very recent past. Finally, we used TNG50 simulations to explore how justified the common identification of local age distribution with global star formation history is: we find that the global star formation rate at a given radius in Milky Way-like galaxies is approximated within a factor of ∼1.5 by the young age distribution within a 6 kpc × 6 kpc area near R⊙.

Assembly Conformity of Structure Growth: Fossil versus Normal Groups of Galaxies

Abstract Using a semianalytic method calibrated to the global star formation history and the stellar mass function at z = 0, we attempt to understand the most stellar-deficient galaxy groups. We argue that such groups are a kind of fossil group (FGs)—in comparison to the normal groups of galaxies, they assemble both halo and stellar mass earlier. We find that there is a central galaxy and satellite conformity between these FGs and normal groups: centrals and satellites in the former form earlier and are more stellar deficient than the counterparts of the latter. We term this effect “assembly conformity” of dark matter halos. This effect accounts for about 70% of the difference in stellar content between FGs and normal groups. When split by the peak redshift for the star formation rate of a group, the mass functions of satellite halos on either side of the peak redshift are found to be indistinguishable between FGs and normal groups, indicating a self-similarity of halo assembly with respect to the peak. The “baryonic environmental” effect due to ram pressure and gas heating accounts for about 30% of the difference in stellar content. While the total stellar mass of FGs is lower than that of normal groups, we predict that the mass of the brightest central galaxy of FGs is, on average, higher than that of normal groups. We also predict that in the central galaxies of FGs, there is a negative stellar age gradient from the center outward, where the opposite is expected for those in normal groups.

Star formation at the edge of the Local Group: a rising star formation history in the isolated galaxy WLM

ABSTRACT We present the star formation history (SFH) of the isolated (D ∼ 970 kpc) Local Group dwarf galaxy Wolf–Lundmark–Melotte (WLM) measured from colour–magnitude diagrams (CMDs) constructed from deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging. Our observations include a central ($0.5 \, r_h$) and outer field ($0.7 \, r_h$) that reach below the oldest main-sequence turn-off. WLM has no early dominant episode of star formation: 20 per cent of its stellar mass formed by ∼12.5 Gyr ago ($z$ ∼ 5). It also has an SFR that rises to the present with 50 per cent of the stellar mass within the most recent 5 Gyr ($z$ < 0.7). There is evidence of a strong age gradient: the mean age of the outer field is 5 Gyr older than the inner field despite being only 0.4 kpc apart. Some models suggest such steep gradients are associated with strong stellar feedback and dark-matter core creation. The SFHs of real isolated dwarf galaxies and those from the Feedback in Realistic Environment suite are in good agreement for M⋆($z$ = 0) ∼ 107–109M⊙, but in worse agreement at lower masses ($M_{\star }(z=0) \sim 10^5\!-\!10^7 \, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }$). These differences may be explainable by systematics in the models (e.g. reionization model) and/or observations (HST field placement). We suggest that a coordinated effort to get deep CMDs between HST/JWST (crowded central fields) and WFIRST (wide-area halo coverage) is the optimal path for measuring global SFHs of isolated dwarf galaxies.

A predicted correlation between age gradient and star formation history in FIRE dwarf galaxies

ABSTRACT We explore the radial variation of star formation histories (SFHs) in dwarf galaxies simulated with Feedback In Realistic Environments (FIRE) physics. The sample contains 26 field dwarf galaxies with Mstar = 105–109 M⊙. We find age gradients are common in our dwarfs, with older stars dominant at large radii. The strength of the gradient correlates with overall galaxy age such that earlier star formation produces a more pronounced gradient. The relation between formation time and strength of the gradient is driven by both mergers and star formation feedback. Mergers can both steepen and flatten the age gradient depending on the timing of the merger and SFHs of the merging galaxy. In galaxies without significant mergers, feedback pushes stars to the outskirts. The strength of the age gradient is determined by the subsequent evolution of the galaxy. Galaxies with weak age gradients constantly grow to z = 0, meaning that young star formation occurs at a similar radius to which older stars are heated to. In contrast, galaxies with strong age gradients tend to maintain a constant half-mass radius over time. If real galaxies have age gradients as we predict, stellar population studies that rely on sampling a limited fraction of a galaxy can give a biased view of its global SFH. Central fields can be biased young by Gyrs while outer fields are biased old. Fields positioned near the 2D half-light radius will provide the least biased measure of a dwarf galaxy’s global SFH.

Self-consistent population spectral synthesis with FADO

Context.Spectral population synthesis (PS) is a fundamental tool in extragalactic research that aims to decipher the assembly history of galaxies from their spectral energy distribution (SED). Whereas this technique has led to key insights into galaxy evolution in recent decades, star formation histories (SFHs) inferred therefrom have been plagued by considerable uncertainties stemming from inherent degeneracies and the fact that until recently allPScodes were restricted to purely stellar fits, neglecting the essential contribution of nebular emission (ne). With the advent ofFADO(Fitting Analysis using Differential evolution Optimisation), the now possible self-consistent modelling of stellar andneopens new routes to the exploration of galaxy SFHs.Aims.The main goal of this study is to quantitatively explore the accuracy to whichFADOcan recover physical and evolutionary properties of galaxies and compare its output with that from purely stellarPScodes.Methods.FADOandSTARLIGHTwere applied to synthetic SEDs that track the spectral evolution of stars and gas in extinction-free mock galaxies of solar metallicity that form their stellar mass (M⋆) according to different parametric SFHs. Spectral fits were computed for two different set-ups that approximate the spectral range of SDSS and CALIFA (V500) data, using up to seven libraries of simple stellar population spectra in the 0.005–2.5Z⊙metallicity range.Results.Our analysis indicates thatFADOcan recover the key physical and evolutionary properties of galaxies, such asM⋆and mass- and light-weighted mean age and metallicity, with an accuracy better than 0.2 dex. This is the case even in phases of strongly elevated specific star formation rate (sSFR) and thus with considerablenecontamination (EW(Hα) > 103Å). Likewise, population vectors fromFADOadequately recover the mass fraction of stars younger than 10 Myr and older than 1 Gyr (M⋆<10Myr/M⋆totalandM⋆>1Gyr/M⋆total, respectively) and reproduce with a high fidelity the observed Hαluminosity. As forSTARLIGHT, our analysis documents a moderately good agreement with theoretical values only for evolutionary phases for whichnedrops to low levels (EW(Hα) ≤ 60 Å) which, depending on the assumed SFH, correspond to an age between ∼0.1 Gyr and 2–4 Gyr. However, fits withSTARLIGHTduring phases of high sSFR severely overestimate bothM⋆and the mass-weighted stellar age, whereas strongly underestimate the light-weighted age and metallicity. Furthermore, our analysis suggests a subtle tendency ofSTARLIGHTto favour a bi-modal SFH, as well a slightly overestimatedM⋆<10Myr/M⋆total, regardless of galaxy age. Whereas the amplitude of these biases can be reduced, depending on the specifics of the fitting procedure (e.g. accuracy and completeness of flagging emission lines, omission of the Balmer and Paschen jump from the fit), they persist even in the idealised case of a line-free SED comprising only stellar and nebular continuum emission.Conclusions.The insights from this study suggest that the neglect of nebular continuum emission inSTARLIGHTand similar purely stellarPScodes could systematically impactM⋆and SFH estimates for star-forming galaxies. We argue that these biases can be relevant in the study of a range of topics in extragalactic research, including the redshift-dependent slope of the star formation (SF) main sequence, the SF frosting hypothesis, and the regulatory role of supermassive black holes on the global SFH of galaxies.

Galaxy Formation in Sterile Neutrino Dark Matter Models

Abstract We investigate galaxy formation in models with dark matter (DM) constituted by sterile neutrinos. Given their large parameter space, defined by the combinations of sterile neutrino mass and mixing parameter with active neutrinos, we focus on models with , consistent with the tentative 3.5 keV line detected in several X-ray spectra of clusters and galaxies. We consider (1) two resonant production models with and , to cover the range of mixing parameters consistent with the 3.5 keV line; (2) two scalar-decay models, representative of the two possible cases characterizing such a scenario: a freeze-in and a freeze-out case. We also consider thermal warm DM with particle mass . Using a semianalytic model, we compare the predictions for the different DM scenarios with a wide set of observables. We find that comparing the predicted evolution of the stellar mass function, the abundance of satellites of Milky Way–like galaxies, and the global star formation history of galaxies with observations does not allow us to disentangle the effects of the baryonic physics from those related to the different DM models. On the other hand, the distribution of the stellar-to-halo mass ratios, the abundance of faint galaxies in the UV luminosity function at , and the specific star formation and age distribution of local, low-mass galaxies constitute potential probes for the DM scenarios considered. We discuss how future observations with upcoming facilities will enable us to rule out or to strongly support DM models based on sterile neutrinos.

Self-consistent semi-analytic models of the first stars

We have developed a semi-analytic framework to model the large-scale evolution of the first Population III (Pop III) stars and the transition to metal-enriched star formation. Our model follows dark matter halos from cosmological N-body simulations, utilizing their individual merger histories and three-dimensional positions, and applies physically motivated prescriptions for star formation and feedback from Lyman-Werner (LW) radiation, hydrogen ionizing radiation, and external metal enrichment due to supernovae winds. This method is intended to complement analytic studies, which do not include clustering or individual merger histories, and hydrodynamical cosmological simulations, which include detailed physics, but are computationally expensive and have limited dynamic range. Utilizing this technique, we compute the cumulative Pop III and metal-enriched star formation rate density (SFRD) as a function of redshift at $z \geq 20$. We find that varying the model parameters leads to significant qualitative changes in the global star formation history. The Pop III star formation efficiency and the delay time between Pop III and subsequent metal-enriched star formation are found to have the largest impact. The effect of clustering (i.e. including the three-dimensional positions of individual halos) on various feedback mechanisms is also investigated. The impact of clustering on LW and ionization feedback is found to be relatively mild in our fiducial model, but can be larger if external metal enrichment can promote metal-enriched star formation over large distances.

AGN wind scaling relations and the co-evolution of black holes and galaxies

Feedback from accreting SMBHs is often identified as the main mechanism responsible for regulating star-formation in AGN host galaxies. However, the relationships between AGN activity, radiation, winds, and star-formation are complex and still far from being understood. We study scaling relations between AGN properties, host galaxy properties and AGN winds. We then evaluate the wind mean impact on the global star-formation history, taking into account the short AGN duty cycle with respect to that of star-formation. We first collect AGN wind observations for 94 AGN with detected massive winds at sub-pc to kpc spatial scales. We then fold AGN wind scaling relations with AGN luminosity functions, to evaluate the average AGN wind mass-loading factor as a function of cosmic time. We find strong correlations between the AGN molecular and ionised wind mass outflow rates and the AGN bolometric luminosity. The power law scaling is steeper for ionised winds (slope 1.29+/-0.38) than for molecular winds (0.76+/-0.06), meaning that the two rates converge at high bolometric luminosities. The molecular gas depletion timescale and the molecular gas fraction of galaxies hosting powerful AGN winds are 3-10 times shorter and smaller than those of main-sequence galaxies with similar SFR, stellar mass and redshift. These findings suggest that, at high AGN bolometric luminosity, the reduced molecular gas fraction may be due to the destruction of molecules by the wind, leading to a larger fraction of gas in the atomic ionised phase. The AGN wind mass-loading factor $\eta=\dot M_{OF}/SFR$ is systematically higher than that of starburst driven winds. Our analysis shows that AGN winds are, on average, powerful enough to clean galaxies from their molecular gas only in massive systems at z<=2, i.e. a strong form of co-evolution between SMBHs and galaxies appears to break down for the least massive galaxies.

Cosmic Dawn (CoDa): the first radiation-hydrodynamics simulation of reionization and galaxy formation in the Local Universe

Cosmic reionization by starlight from early galaxies affected their evolution, thereby impacting reionization, itself. Star formation suppression, for example, may explain the observed underabundance of Local Group dwarfs relative to N-body predictions for Cold Dark Matter. Reionization modelling requires simulating volumes large enough [~(100Mpc)^3] to sample reionization "patchiness", while resolving millions of galaxy sources above ~10^8 Msun , combining gravitational and gas dynamics with radiative transfer. Modelling the Local Group requires initial cosmological density fluctuations pre-selected to form the well-known structures of the local universe today. Cosmic Dawn ("CoDa") is the first such fully-coupled, radiation-hydrodynamics simulation of reionization of the local universe. Our new hybrid CPU-GPU code, RAMSES-CUDATON, performs hundreds of radiative transfer and ionization rate-solver timesteps on the GPUs for each hydro-gravity timestep on the CPUs. CoDa simulated (91Mpc)^3 with 4096^3 particles and cells, to redshift 4.23, on ORNL supercomputer Titan, utilizing 8192 cores and 8192 GPUs. Global reionization ended slightly later than observed. However, a simple temporal rescaling which brings the evolution of ionized fraction into agreement with observations also reconciles ionizing flux density, cosmic star formation history, CMB electron scattering optical depth and galaxy UV luminosity function with their observed values. Photoionization heating suppressed the star formation of haloes below ~2 x 10^9 Msun , decreasing the abun- dance of faint galaxies around MAB_1600 = [-10,-12]. For most of reionization, star formation was dominated by haloes between 10^10 - 10^11 Msun , so low-mass halo suppression was not reflected by a distinct feature in the global star formation history. THE INNER STRUCTURE OF DWARF-SIZED HALOS IN WARM AND COLD DARK MATTER COSMOLOGIES

ABSTRACT By means of N-body + hydrodynamic zoom-in simulations we study the evolution of the inner dark matter and stellar mass distributions of central dwarf galaxies formed in halos of virial masses M v = (2–3) × 1010 h −1 M ⊙ at z = 0, both in a warm dark matter (WDM) and cold dark matter (CDM) cosmology. The half-mode mass in the WDM power spectrum of our simulations is M f = 2 × 1010 h −1 M ⊙. In the dark matter (DM) only simulations halo density profiles are well described by the Navarro–Frenk–White parametric fit in both cosmologies, though the WDM halos have concentrations lower by factors of 1.5–2.0 than their CDM counterparts. In the hydrodynamic simulations, the effects of baryons significantly flatten the inner density, velocity dispersion, and pseudo phase space density profiles of the WDM halos but not of the CDM ones. The density slope, measured at ≈0.02R v, α 0.02, becomes shallow in periods of 2–5 Gyr in the WDM runs. We explore whether this flattening process correlates with the global star formation (SF), M s/M v ratio, gas outflow, and internal specific angular momentum histories. We do not find any clear trends, but when α 0.02 is shallower than −0.5, M s/M v is always between 0.25% and 1%. We conclude that the main reason for the formation of the shallow core is the presence of strong gas mass fluctuations inside the inner halo, which are a consequence of the feedback driven by a very bursty and sustained SF history in shallow gravitational potentials. Our WDM halos, which assemble late and are less concentrated than the CDM ones, obey these conditions. There are also (rare) CDM systems with extended mass assembly histories that obey these conditions and form shallow cores. The dynamical heating and expansion processes behind the DM core flattening apply also to the stars in such a way that the stellar age and metallicity gradients of the dwarfs are softened, their stellar half-mass radii strongly grow with time, and their central surface densities decrease.

TheHerschelview of the dominant mode of galaxy growth fromz= 4 to the present day

We present an analysis of the deepest Herschel images in four major extragalactic fields GOODS-North, GOODS-South, UDS and COSMOS obtained within the GOODS-Herschel and CANDELS-Herschel key programs. The picture provided by 10497 individual far-infrared detections is supplemented by the stacking analysis of a mass-complete sample of 62361 star-forming galaxies from the CANDELS-HST H band-selected catalogs and from two deep ground-based Ks band-selected catalogs in the GOODS-North and the COSMOS-wide fields, in order to obtain one of the most accurate and unbiased understanding to date of the stellar mass growth over the cosmic history. We show, for the first time, that stacking also provides a powerful tool to determine the dispersion of a physical correlation and describe our method called "scatter stacking" that may be easily generalized to other experiments. We demonstrate that galaxies of all masses from z=4 to 0 follow a universal scaling law, the so-called main sequence of star-forming galaxies. We find a universal close-to-linear slope of the logSFR-logM* relation with evidence for a flattening of the main sequence at high masses (log(M*/Msun) > 10.5) that becomes less prominent with increasing redshift and almost vanishes by z~2. This flattening may be due to the parallel stellar growth of quiescent bulges in star-forming galaxies. Within the main sequence, we measure a non varying SFR dispersion of 0.3 dex. The specific SFR (sSFR=SFR/M*) of star-forming galaxies is found to continuously increase from z=0 to 4. Finally we discuss the implications of our findings on the cosmic SFR history and show that more than 2/3 of present-day stars must have formed in a regime dominated by the main sequence mode. As a consequence we conclude that, although omnipresent in the distant Universe, galaxy mergers had little impact in shaping the global star formation history over the last 12.5 Gyr.

Cross-correlation of cosmic far-infrared background anisotropies with large scale structures

We measure the cross-power spectra between luminous red galaxies (LRGs) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS)-III Data Release Eight (DR8) and cosmic infrared background (CIB) anisotropies from Planck and data from the Improved Reprocessing (IRIS) of the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) at 353, 545, 857, and 3000 GHz, corresponding to 850, 550, 350 and 100 micron, respectively, in the multipole range 100<l<1000. Using approximately 6.5 10^5 photometrically determined LRGs in 7760 deg^2 of the northern hemisphere in the redshift range 0.45 < z < 0.65, we model the far-infrared background (FIRB) anisotropies with an extended version of the halo model. With these methods, we confirm the basic picture obtained from recent analyses of FIRB anisotropies with Herschel and Planck, that the most efficient halo mass at hosting star forming galaxies is log(M_ eff/M_\odot)=12.84+/-0.15. We estimate the percentage of FIRB anisotropies correlated with LRGs as approximately 11.8 %, 3.9 %, 1.8 %, and 1.0 % of the total at 3000, 857, 545, and 353 GHz, respectively. At redshift z~0.55, the bias of FIRB galaxies with respect to the dark matter density field has the value b_{FIRB}~1.45, and the mean dust temperature of FIRB galaxies is T_d=26 K. Finally, we discuss the impact of present and upcoming cross-correlations with far-infrared background anisotropies on the determination of the global star formation history and the link between galaxies and dark matter.

COSMIC REIONIZATION ON COMPUTERS. II. REIONIZATION HISTORY AND ITS BACK-REACTION ON EARLY GALAXIES

We compare the results from several sets of cosmological simulations of cosmic reionization, produced under Cosmic Reionization On Computers (CROC) project, with existing observational data on the high-redshift Ly-alpha forest and the abundance of Ly-alpha emitters. We find good consistency with the observational measurements and the previous simulation work. By virtue of having several independent realizations for each set of numerical parameters, we are able to explore the effect of cosmic variance on observable quantities. One unexpected conclusion we are forced into is that cosmic variance is unusually large at z>6, with both our simulations and, most likely, observational measurements are still not fully converged for even such basic quantities as the average Gunn-Peterson optical depth or the volume-weighted neutral fraction. We also find that reionization has little effect on the early galaxies or on global cosmic star formation history, because galaxies whose gas content is affected by photoionization contain no molecular (i.e. star-forming) gas in the first place. In particular, measurements of the faint end of the galaxy luminosity function by JWST are unlikely to provide a useful constraint on reionization.

Star formation sustained by gas accretion

This paper discusses how cosmic gas accretion controls star formation, and summarizes the physical properties expected for the cosmic gas accreted by galaxies. The paper also collects observational evidence for gas accretion sustaining star formation. It reviews evidence inferred from neutral and ionized hydrogen, as well as from stars. A number of properties characterizing large samples of star-forming galaxies can be explained by metal-poor gas accretion, in particular, the relationship between stellar mass, metallicity, and star formation rate (the so-called fundamental metallicity relationship). They are put forward and analyzed. Theory predicts gas accretion to be particularly important at high redshift, so indications based on distant objects are reviewed, including the global star formation history of the universe, and the gas around galaxies as inferred from absorption features in the spectra of background sources.

EUNHA: A NEW COSMOLOGICAL HYDRODYNAMIC SIMULATION CODE

We develop a parallel cosmological hydrodynamic simulation code designed for the study of formation and evolution of cosmological structures. The gravitational force is calculated using the TreePM method and the hydrodynamics is implemented based on the smoothed particle hydrodynamics. The initial displacement and velocity of simulation particles are calculated according to second-order Lagrangian perturbation theory using the power spectra of dark matter and baryonic matter. The initial background temperature is given by Recfast and the temperature fluctuations at the initial particle position are assigned according to the adiabatic model. We use a time-limiter scheme over the individual time steps to capture shock-fronts and to ease the time-step tension between the shock and preshock particles. We also include the astrophysical gas processes of radiative heating/cooling, star formation, metal enrichment, and supernova feedback. We test the code in several standard cases such as one-dimensional Riemann problems, Kelvin-Helmholtz, and Sedov blast wave instability. Star formation on the galactic disk is investigated to check whether the Schmidt-Kennicutt relation is properly recovered. We also study global star formation history at different simulation resolutions and compare them with observations.
