A Conceptual Framework Based on PLS-SEM Approach for Sustainable Customer Relationship Management in Enterprise Software Development: Insights from Developers

Due to its significant relevance in outsourcing, the global software industry, such as enterprise software development organizations, accepted the implementation of global software development (GSD). Customers play a pivotal role in any industry, and effective customer relationship management (CRM) is instrumental in ensuring client satisfaction while developing software projects. However, software organizations operating globally often need more insight into their customers’ perspectives. These challenges give rise to a major combination for the success of the GSD projects. Organizations working globally face the key challenge of the implementation of CRM. The main objective of this paper is to investigate and understand the challenges faced by global software development organizations when implementing customer relationship management (CRM) in their enterprise software projects. This paper aims to assess how these CRM implementation challenges impact the value of enterprise software products in the context of global software development (GSD). To achieve this objective, the study employs the partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) approach and conducts a systematic literature review (SLR) to identify relevant challenges. Additionally, this paper presents a conceptual framework based on the identified challenges and validates it through surveys and qualitative research with software outsourcing companies in Pakistan. The research provides valuable insights from the perspective of software developers and aims to offer practical guidance for the successful application of CRM in outsourcing.

Systematic literature review on global software development based software cost estimation models and cost drivers

<p>Global software development (GSD) is a well - established discipline of software engineering that focuses on the advantage of a global environment. Effective cost estimation is critical for the success of GSD projects. Cost estimation in a GSD environment is a challenging task. As a re sult, GSD must emphasize cost estimation. Findings show that a number of researchers over the past few decades have emphasized GSD - based cost estimation in GSD; to the best of our knowledge, however, existing cost estimation have not taken into account man y GSD - based cost drivers that must be considered when estimating costs. Motivated by all this, the purpose of this study is to review the existing GSD - based cost estimation models/techniques and cost drivers that influence the accuracy of cost estimation. To identify and compile relevant research papers, a systematic literature review was carried out. From twenty - seven selected studies, initially, 86 GSD - based cost drivers and 12 GSD - based cost estimation models/techniques were extracted. After filtration, 26 cost drivers were identified as significant and to be considered in GSD - based cost estimation. This study significantly identifies GSD - based cost drivers and existing cost estimation techniques.</p>

Empirical exploration of critical challenges of requirements implementation in global software development

AbstractRequirements collection is difficult and a critical phase of software development life cycle, in particular in a global software development (GSD) environment. In GSD, clients and vendors are physically separated such that there exist challenges such as lack of face‐to‐face communication, language differences, culture variation, and time zone differences. The objective of current research is to identify critical challenges of requirement engineering in GSD. There is no work done yet to empirically analyze all possible challenges via questionnaire survey from software industries. This research paper empirically investigates and analyze the identified challenges from systematic literature review (SLR) based on a questionnaire survey. For this purpose, 50 respondents from different countries are organized. From this research, 13 challenges during requirements implementation in the context of GSD have been identified previously via SLR. These challenges were then evaluated using an empirical approach of questionnaire survey. The results from respondents were analyzed based on type of respondents, level of experience of respondents, and from client–vendor perspective. Finally, the challenges were prioritized based on its frequency of occurrences from the SLR and the questionnaire survey. The relationships between the challenges and the survey results were evaluated using the Spearman's correlation coefficient. The results produced a 0.835 Spearman's correlation coefficient at significance level ρ = 0.000, which showed a strong positive correlation between the outcome of SLR and survey with no significant difference. The implication of this research work lies in both fundamental and practical perspective. The prioritized set of challenges was provided based on SLR, and questionnaire survey acts as a knowledge base for both researchers and industrial practitioners. This work will help researchers to identify challenges in GSD projects or other software engineering areas.

Global Manager: A Serious Game to Raise Awareness of the Challenges of Being a Project Manager in Global Software Development

Project managers tend to confront multiple challenges in Global Software Development (GSD), including misunderstandings about the project requirements, complex estimations of costs, risks, and efforts, along with increases in task allocation and a lack of coordination. “Soft skills” play a fundamental role in solving these challenges, as they are the human or social abilities that facilitate the resolution of conflicts and involve dealing with people and managing projects in their most social and creative dimension. However, developing the soft skills that allow project managers to lead in an effective manner is not an easy task, especially in global or distributed environments, where coordination and control problems are commonplace. One suitable mechanism with which to develop these soft skills is that of serious games, which focus on learning by doing and allow users to simulate real scenarios. The authors of this article are aware of the usefulness of this type of teaching method and have, therefore, developed the serious game described herein. This serious game is denominated as Global Manager and is focused on helping both students and novice project managers to become aware of the factors that may affect GSD projects. Global Manager was evaluated by means of a quasi-experiment based on a pretest-posttest design, which was used to assess whether the game can increase the players’ awareness and knowledge of the factors that a project manager should consider in GSD projects. The results obtained after evaluating the game were quite satisfactory, as the game taught the players to differentiate between global and distributed software projects and to experience situations that may and do occur in these settings. Furthermore, Global Manager helped improve players' perceptions of the importance of different influencing factors in GSD.

Secure Global Software Development: A Practitioners’ Perspective

Global software development (GSD) is rapidly becoming standard practice in the software industry due to its many potential benefits. However, one of the biggest challenges in GSD projects is to explicitly include security in the different phases of the global software development life cycle (GSDLC). To make GSD projects secure and successful, it is necessary to identify secure software development (SSD) practices vital to GSD project success. This article aims to identify SSD practices critical for GSD projects. To do this, we selected 36 security practices vital to the security of non-GSD projects from existing scientific and grey literature on software security. From the identified security practices, we shortlisted the security practices which are critical for GSD projects based on practitioners’ opinions using an online survey. Fifty-four GSD practitioners participated in this survey. Participants who evaluated these practices were asked to score each SSD practice on a four-point scale to indicate its relevance to GSD projects. The results obtained from the survey uncovered critical SSD practices that are primarily applicable to GSD projects. Our findings reveal variations of opinion among GSD practitioners with varying experience and company size regarding the importance of selected security practices for GSD. According to study findings, 16/36 practices are critical for GSD projects. These identified security practices belong to various phases of GSDLC.

Successful management of cloud‐based global software development projects: A multivocal study

AbstractSoftware industry is continuously exploring better ways to develop applications. A new phenomenon to achieve this is cloud‐based global software development (CGSD), which refers to the adoption of cloud computing services by organizations to support global software development projects. The CGSD approach affects the strategic and operational aspects of the way projects are managed. The objective of the study is to identify the success factors which contribute to management of CGSD projects. We carried out a multivocal literature review (MLR) to identify the success factors from the state‐of‐the‐art and the state‐of‐the‐practice in project management of CGSD projects. We identified 32 success factors that contribute to the management of CGSD projects. The findings of MLR indicate that time to market, continuous development, financial restructuring, and scalability are the most critical success factors for CGSD. Moreover, the findings of the study show that there is a positive correlation between the success factors reported in both formal literature and industry based gray literature. The findings of this study can assist the practitioners to develop the strategies needed for effective project management of CGSD projects.

A broad approach to expert detection using syntactic and semantic social networks analysis in the context of Global Software Development

Social network analysis has been widely used in different application contexts. For example, in Global Software Development, where multiple developers with diverse skills and knowledge are involved, the use of social networking models helps to understand how these developers collaborate. Finding experts who can help address critical elements or issues in a project is a challenging and critical task. It is especially true in the context of Global Software Development projects, where developers with specific skills and knowledge often need to be identified. In this sense, searching for essential members is a valuable task, as they are fundamental to the evolution of the network. This article proposes a broad solution for syntactic and semantic analysis in social networks in the Global Software Development context. In this solution, we define a model for the social network capable of capturing collaboration between developers, incorporate strategies for temporal analysis of the network, explore the network using machine learning algorithms, and propose an ontology to enrich the data semantically. We conducted three case studies using data extracted from GitHub to evaluate the proposed approach. The case studies provide evidence that our proposed method can identify specialists, highlighting their expertise and importance to the evolution of the social network.

OffshoringDSS: An Automated Tool of Application Maintenance Offshoring

The rapid spread of the internet over the last two decades has prompted more and more companies to deploy their work internationally. The offshoring strategy enables organizations to cut down costs, boost shareholder value, acquire a competitive advantage, reduce cycle time, increase workforce flexibility, generate revenue and focus on their core business. The number of worldwide software development projects has increased due to globalization. Global Software Development (GSD) projects are forecast to grow by 20% to 30% in countries like India and China. The outsourcing experts choose one of the suitable models from the available global delivery options to deliver services in the global software paradigm. However, adopting the appropriate model for application maintenance is a complicated process. In addition, the right model is selected based on various influencing factors, type of the project and client requirements. Additionally, sufficient domain expertise is necessary for the decision making of offshore outsourcing. Currently, there is no dynamic and automated tool for the decision making of application maintenance offshoring. Therefore, this study presents an Offshoring Decision Support System (OffshoringDSS), an automated and novel tool to make the offshoring decisions of application maintenance. The suggested tool is based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) technique. The tool automatically performs all the calculations involved in the decision making and ranks the sourcing models.

Effect of Temporal Patterns on Task Cohesion in Global Software Development Teams

This work focuses on the analysis of temporal measures and their ability to predict task cohesion within global software development projects. Messages were collected from three software development projects that involved students from two different countries. The similarities and quantities of these interactions were computed and analyzed at individual and group levels. We proposed pacing similarity, pacing rate and synchrony, a set of temporal metrics measuring frequency and rhythm of team member’s interactions. Results showed a statistically significant negative correlation between pacing rate and task cohesion, which suggests that frequent communications increases the cohesion between team members. The study also found a positive correlation between synchrony and task cohesion, which indicates the importance of establishing a communication rhythm within members a team. In addition, the temporal models at individual and group-levels were found to be good predictors of task cohesion, which indicates the existence of a strong effect of frequent and rhythmic communications on cohesion related to the task.

Risk Classification in Global Software Development Using a Machine Learning Approach

Software development through teams at different geographical locations is a trend of modern era, which is not only producing good results without costing lot of money but also productive in relation to its cost, low risk and high return. This shift of perception of working in a group rather than alone is getting stronger day by day and has become an important planning tool and part of their business strategy. In this research classification approaches like SVM and K-NN have been implemented to classify the true positive events of global software development project risk according to Time, Cost and Resource. Comparative analysis has also been performed between these two algorithms to determine the highest accuracy algorithms. Results proved that Support Vector Machine (SVM) performed very well in case of Cost Related Risk and Resource Related Risk. Whereas, KNN is found superior to SVM for Time Related Risk.

Hybrid Practices in Global Software Development: A Systematic Literature Review

Although agile methods in their purest way fit several companies, it has been a challenge to perform them in environments with distributed teams developing large software applications. Contractual items, for projects under development for external organizations, introduce additional complexities for pure agilebased approaches. The majority of global teams and companies use hybrid development practices that combine different development methods and frameworks. This research provides results from an empirical field study on how the hybrids practices are adopted in Global Software Development (GSD) projects. A systematic literature review was conducted to capture the status of combining agile with plan-driven in GSD projects. The results were limited to peer-reviewed conference papers or journal articles, published between 2001 and 2020. The present study selected 37 papers from five different bibliographic databases. In the end, 16 practices were summarized and described as hybrid by GSD projects. Based on the findings of this study, the authors can conclude that the contribution of this study is not only limited to identifying how hybrid development practices are applied in GSD but also allowing that practitioners can have a basis for adapting their development methods.

Proposing total quality management as a buffer between global software development challenges and project success

PurposeThis study aims to empirically investigate the relationship between different global software development (GSD) challenges (management, process, social, technical and environmental challenges) and software project success. Further, the study examines the moderating role of total quality management (TQM) between the relationship of GSD challenges and success of software projects.Design/methodology/approachUsing two field studies, the authors collected data form software developers working in globally distributed teams. In study 1 (n = 194), relationship of different dimensions of GSD challenges (management, process, social, technical and environmental challenges) and project success was examined. In study 2 (n = 138), moderating role of TQM was examined on the relationship of GSD challenges and project success.FindingsThe results of study 1 indicate that there is a negative relationship between all dimensions of GSD challenges and project success. Findings of study 2 confirmed that TQM practices moderate the negative relationship between GSD challenges and project success.Practical implicationsThe findings of the study provide guidelines to the project managers of software industry to mitigate GSD challenges using TQM practices.Originality/valueStudy adds in the literature of TQM, GSD challenges and project success by (1) empirically investigating the relationship between different GSD challenges and software project success and (2) by examining the moderating role of TQM practices on relationship of GSD challenges and project success in global software development industry.

Translation of Activities in a Global Virtual Teams Software Development

. This study explores Global Virtual Software Teams’ development practices and try to demystify some of the misconceptions about global software development practices based on findings from the global virtual software teams’ experiment that was carried out at DePaul University from 2011 – 2018. The moments of translation from the perspective of actor-network theory (ANT) was employed in the data analysis, to examine how development approach was selected by the global virtual teams. One of the key findings from our research is that the success of a global software development project does not have a strong dependency on the development approach. While we agree that it is one of the key influencing factors, there are other equally strong factors for global virtual software team’s success.

Prioritization of global software requirements' engineering barriers: An analytical hierarchy process

Software industry is adopting global software development (GSD) due to its potential to produce quality products at a lower cost. However, the GSD firms face many challenges that make development activities more complicated, especially related to the requirements engineering (RE) process. The objectives of this article are to investigate and prioritize the barriers faced by the GSD organizations during the RE process. First, we identified 17 barriers related to the RE process in the GSD projects. Next, the identified barriers were further validated with real-world GSD practitioners using a questionnaire survey. Finally, we applied the analytical hierarchy process to prioritize the investigated barriers with respect to their significance for the RE process in the GSD domain. The results show that coordination is the most significant barrier category for the RE process in GSD projects. Lack of standard and procedure for RE in GSD, lack of synchronized communication infrastructure, and lack of mutual understanding between the overseas RE teams are also high-ranked barriers for the RE process in GSD. The authors believe that the findings of this study will assist practitioners and researchers in developing effective strategies and plans for the successful implementation of the RE process in the GSD context.

Addressing Communication, Coordnation and Cultural Issues in Global Software Development Projects

The field of Global Software Development has been an active area of research for the last two decades due to its enormous benefits such as lower labor cost, faster development and easy access to the skilled labor pool. Apart from these benefits, it faces some challenges like communication, coordination, trust and configuration management etc. These challenges arise primarily due to physical, cultural and time zone differences. The empirical studies highlight that the existing Global Software Development solutions do not fully meet the user needs as there are still several gaps in these solutions. Therefore, to fulfill these gaps, there is a need to develop novel frameworks that address outstanding issues. In this paper, we have attempted to address the aforesaid GSD challenges. The practitioners can benefit from our proposed framework during the execution of GSD projects. The proposed framework mainly focuses on the root causes of the two principal challenges namely the communication and cultural differences. We believe that if the team members of a software project can communicate effectively and show considerations for others by imparting due reverence to the cultural norms, then the other residual issues can easily be reduced and minimized.

Data Consolidation in Global Software Development Projects: A Grounded Theory

Effective coordination is a crucial aspect of successful Global Software Development (GSD) projects. Limited studies have examined coordination strategies and their related indicators. Therefore, this study focuses on assessing the coordination processes that require specific strategies and related indicators that can contribute to effective coordination. Thus, the main aim of this research is to consolidate the coordination strategies and the related indicators that were extracted from two different sources namely, Systematic Review and Semi-structured interview. Grounded Theory was used for the consolidation of these two sources. The results of this study are a set of coordination strategies and related indicators that will be used to formulate the evaluation to assess the effectiveness of the coordination processes in GSD projects.

Risk Prediction with Regression in Global Software Development using Machine Learning Approach: A Comparison of Linear and Decision Tree Regression

Software development through teams at different geographical locations is a trend of modern era, which is not only producing good results without costing lot of money, but also productive in relation to its cost with low risk and high return. This shift of perception of working in a group rather than alone is getting stronger day by day and has become an important planning tool and part of their business strategy. Due to this phenomenal shift the development processes have become complex and chances of risks have been increased. The utilization of Machine learning to manage risk is helpful when taking care of and evaluating data. In this research regression approaches like Linear Regression and Tree Regression have been implemented to predict the responses of risks involved in global software development. Comparative analysis has also been performed between these two algorithms to determine the highest accuracy algorithms. The results indicate that Fine tree regression, which is one of techniques of decision tree regression, gave better results in terms of goodness of fit measures as compared to linear regression model fitted to examine the relationship of cost, time and resource related risk with the overall risk of global software development projects.

Empirical Investigation of Critical Requirements Engineering Practices for Global Software Development

There is a need to identify requirements engineering (RE) practices that are important to global software development (GSD) project success. The objective of this paper is to report our recent empirical study results which aimed to identify the RE practices that are important to GSD projects. This study used an online survey questionnaire to elicit data from 56 RE experts of GSD projects. The survey included 66 RE practices identified by Sommerville et al. for non-GSD projects. The participants were asked to rank each RE practice on a four-point scale to determine the degree of importance of each practice in the context of GSD projects. This research identified a set of six key RE practices that mainly focuses on GSD project stakeholders, scope, standards and requirements traceability management. One common theme that is evident from the RE experts' feedback analysis is the standardization of requirements documents to reduce requirements inconsistencies and improve communication in diverse and distributed GSD project environments Our results show that not all 66 RE best practices are important for GSD projects. We believe that a good understanding of the identified RE practices is vital in developing and implementing the situation-specific RE processes for GSD projects.

Prioritization-Based Taxonomy of Global Software Development Challenges: A FAHP Based Analysis

Global Software Development (GSD) continues to receive interest from software industry due to potential economic benefits. Management of GSD projects is not straightforward due to involvement of different geographically distributed teams who collaborate to produce a software. The objective of this study is to prioritize the challenges faced by practitioners during management of a GSD project. A questionnaire survey was developed to collect feedback from GSD practitioners about relative importance of 20 challenges reported in literature. Next, the Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (FAHP) was used to rank the challenges associated with management of GSD projects. The study provides a prioritization-based taxonomy of challenges associated with management of GSD projects. We believe software organizations can use the taxonomy to better plan and manage GSD projects.

Green-Agile Maturity Model: An Evaluation Framework for Global Software Development Vendors

Agile methods are extensively adapted by software development organizations due to the competitive benefits it offers. In recent years global software development (GSD) projects practice agile methods as prominent methods to deliver the software in increments with utmost user satisfaction and affordable cost. Beside the use of agile methods, the software industry has also considered the green aspect of software, to be in line with the demands of the organizations and the world technological ecosystem. The green and sustainable feature of software should focus both the energy and resource efficiency key factors. This phenomenon of embedding the green flavor in software has emerged a new research area, green software engineering, that promises the development of eco-friendly software with minimum energy and use of less computing resources, to trim down the adverse effects on both society and environment. The principal objective of this research study is to design and develop a multi-level Green-Agile Maturity Model (GAMM) to assess the GSD vendors’ agile maturity in terms of green software development. The model has been built in four phases. In phase I and II, systematic literature review (SLR) was performed to identify the success factors and risk factors that either supports or hinders the green and sustainable software development respectively by practicing the agile methods in GSD. The results have been validated from 106 relevant experts, dealing with agile and green software projects, through questionnaire survey. The experts’ demographic represents 25 different countries. We also identified the industry practices through SLR and survey, to address our identified critical factors. Phase III of this research deals with development of the GAMM by categorizing the identified factors into seven Green-Agile maturity levels. A similar approach has been used in other models such as Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI), Implementation Maturity Model (IMM) and Software Outsourcing Vendors Readiness Model (SOVRM). In phase IV of this research, five case studies were conducted at GSD organizations, to evaluate the structure and efficacy of the GAMM, while as a major contribution, this paper presents our developed model, the GAMM, which aims to assess the green-agile maturity of the GSD vendors in terms of green and sustainable software development.
