Evaluating flood hazards in data-sparse coastal lowlands: highlighting the Ayeyarwady Delta (Myanmar)

Coastal lowlands and river deltas worldwide are increasingly exposed to coastal, pluvial and fluvial flooding as well as relative sea-level rise (RSLR). However, information about both single and multiple flood-type hazards, their potential impact and the characteristics of areas, population and assets at risk is often still limited as high-quality data either does not exist or is not accessible. This often constitutes a main barrier for generating sound assessments, especially for scientific and public communities in the so-called Global South. We provide a standardised, integrative approach for the first-order assessment of these single and multiple flood-type hazards and show how this can be conducted for data-sparse, hardly accessible and inaccessible coastal lowlands such as the Ayeyarwady Delta in Myanmar by using only open accessible and freely available datasets of satellite imagery, global precipitation estimates, satellite-based river discharge measurements, elevation, land use, and population data. More than 70% of the delta, mainly used for agriculture, and about 40% of its present population are prone to flooding due to either monsoon precipitation and runoff, storm surge, and RSLR, or their combination, jeopardising food security and economic development in the region. The approach allows for the integration and combination of various datasets, combined in a highly flexible workflow that performs at low computational capacities, supporting the evaluation of flood-prone areas on regional and local scale for data-sparse coastal lowlands worldwide. It thereby allows to attribute different types of flood hazards, complements concepts of vulnerability and risk, and supports risk-informed decision making and development of effective multi-flooding adaptation strategies.

Evaluation of the RainFARM Statistical Downscaling Technique Applied to IMERG over Global Oceans Using Passive Aquatic Listener In Situ Rain Measurements

Abstract High-resolution oceanic precipitation estimates are needed to increase our understanding of and ability to monitor ocean–atmosphere coupled processes. Satellite multisensor precipitation products such as IMERG provide global precipitation estimates at relatively high resolution (0.1°, 30 min), but the resolution at which IMERG precipitation estimates are considered reliable is coarser than the nominal resolution of the product itself. In this study, we examine the ability of the Rainfall Autoregressive Model (RainFARM) statistical downscaling technique to produce ensembles of precipitation fields at relatively high spatial and temporal resolution when applied to spatially and temporally coarsened precipitation fields from IMERG. The downscaled precipitation ensembles are evaluated against in situ oceanic rain-rate observations collected by passive aquatic listeners (PALs) in 11 different ocean domains. We also evaluate IMERG coarsened to the same resolution as the downscaled fields to determine whether the process of coarsening then downscaling improves precipitation estimates more than averaging IMERG to coarser resolution only. Evaluations were performed on individual months, seasons, by ENSO phase, and based on precipitation characteristics. Results were inconsistent, with downscaling improving precipitation estimates in some domains and time periods and producing worse performance in others. While the results imply that the performance of the downscaled precipitation estimates is related to precipitation characteristics, it is still unclear what characteristics or combinations thereof lead to the most improvement or consistent improvement when applying RainFARM to IMERG.

Dependency of errors for four global reanalysis and satellite precipitation estimates on four crucial factors

Errors in the reanalysis and satellite precipitation products are closely related to four impacting factors, i.e., seasonality, topography, rainfall intensity, and climate type. Therefore, revealing the dependency of the errors of precipitation products on seasonality, topography, rainfall intensity, and climate type is important for data users and developers to improve the quality of precipitation products and enhance their applications in hydrometeorology. In this study, the links between errors and four impacting factors were used to investigate the dependency of errors in the ERA5 reanalysis and three satellite-only precipitation products (i.e., IMERG-Late, GSMaP-MVK, and PERSIANN-CCS) on the four impacting factors. Results from mainland China show that the errors of the four products depend on the four factors, whereas the dependency of different error indicators on the four factors differs significantly. In all seasons, ERA5 outperformed the three satellite-only precipitation products in most cases. In terms of topographic dependency, the probability of detection (POD) of ERA5 increases with topographic complexity but the opposite is true for the satellite-only precipitation products. Compared with purely infrared (IR) data, the fusion of passive microwave and IR data enhances the quality of precipitation estimates and reduces the topographical dependency of the errors. Regarding intensity-based performance, the performance of the four products in terms of the POD and normalized root-mean-squared error improves as the rain rate increases, whereas that of the three bias metrics (i.e., total bias, hit bias, and miss bias) deteriorates. In terms of the climatic dependency of the errors, the errors of the four products increase as the aridity increases in most cases. False bias contributes primarily to the total bias for the four products. More importantly, we found that the relationship between the false alarm ratio (FAR) and climate type cannot accurately characterize the dependency of false alarms based on climate type because of the interference of hit precipitation events. Based on this finding, the mean number of false alarms is recommended to replace the FAR to objectively investigate the false precipitation of various precipitation products.

Espresso: A Global Deep Learning Model to Estimate Precipitation from Satellite Observations

Estimating precipitation is of critical importance to climate systems and decision-making processes. This paper presents Espresso, a deep learning model designed for estimating precipitation from satellite observations on a global scale. Conventional methods, like ground-based radars, are limited in terms of spatial coverage. Satellite observations, on the other hand, allow global coverage. Combined with deep learning methods, these observations offer the opportunity to address the challenge of estimating precipitation on a global scale. This research paper presents the development of a deep learning model using geostationary satellite data as input and generating instantaneous rainfall rates, calibrated using data from the Global Precipitation Measurement Core Observatory (GPMCO). The performance impact of various input data configurations on Espresso was investigated. These configurations include a sequence of four images from geostationary satellites and the optimal selection of channels. Additional descriptive features were explored to enhance the model’s robustness for global applications. When evaluated against the GPMCO test set, Espresso demonstrated highly accurate precipitation estimation, especially within equatorial regions. A comparison against six other operational products using multiple metrics indicated its competitive performance. The model’s superior storm localization and intensity estimation were further confirmed through visual comparisons in case studies. Espresso has been incorporated as an operational product at Météo-France, delivering high-quality, real-time global precipitation estimates every 30 min.

Can We Estimate the Uncertainty Level of Satellite Long-Term Precipitation Records?

Abstract Several decades of continuous improvements in satellite precipitation algorithms have resulted in fairly accurate level-2 precipitation products for local-scale applications. Numerous studies have been carried out to quantify random and systematic errors at individual validation sites and regional networks. Understanding uncertainties at larger scales, however, has remained a challenge. Temporal changes in precipitation regional biases, regime morphology, sampling, and observation-vector information content, all play important roles in defining the accuracy of satellite rainfall retrievals. This study considers these contributors to offer a quantitative estimate of uncertainty in recently produced global precipitation climate data record. Generated from intercalibrated observations collected by a constellation of passive microwave (PMW) radiometers over the course of 30 years, this data record relies on Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission enterprise PMW precipitation retrieval to offer a long-term global monthly precipitation estimates with corresponding uncertainty at 5° scales. To address changes in the information content across different constellation members the study develops synthetic datasets from GPM Microwave Imager (GMI) sensor, while sampling- and morphology-related uncertainties are quantified using GPM’s dual-frequency precipitation radar (DPR). Special attention is given to separating precipitation into self-similar states that appear to be consistent across environmental conditions. Results show that the variability of bias patterns can be explained by the relative occurrence of different precipitation states across the regions and used to calculate product’s uncertainty. It is found that at 5° spatial scale monthly mean precipitation uncertainties in tropics can exceed 10%.

Improving near-real-time satellite precipitation products through multistage modified schemes

Near-real-time (NRT) satellite precipitation products (SPPs) exhibit great application potential in global precipitation estimation for their convenient acquisition and access. A universal framework was developed to modify precipitation occurrence and intensity in stages to correct and integrate multiple NRT SPPs with open-access gridded observational data. Based on this framework, both machine learning- and statistical-based correction methods were utilized to construct multi-stage modified schemes and three schemes, namely the double machine learning (DML), statistical error correction (SEC) and hybrid (ML-SEC) schemes, were stepwise established. The improvements of NRT SPPs by these three schemes were comparatively analyzed based on a dense network of rain gauges located in the Yiluo River Basin, China, which does not depend on reference data for modification and has derived a reliable evaluation result at grid-point scale. The results indicated that the DML scheme attains the highest accuracy with a grid-averaged Kling-Gupta efficiency (KGE) value of 0.70 and a critical success index (CSI) value of 0.60, followed by the ML-SEC and SEC schemes. The KGE and CSI values of NRT SPPs have been improved by 22.20% ∼ 535.48% and 30.30% ∼ 100.24%, respectively, through the DML scheme. The DML-modified result also outperformed the mainstream post-processed SPPs with a 1.95% ∼ 222.25% and 9.22% ∼ 102.00% higher KGE and CSI values, respectively. The main error sources of the SPPs due to false and hit events were reduced by the multistage schemes, and the DML scheme achieved a balanced efficiency at both occurrence and intensity modification stages. Moreover, the DML scheme was more advantageous than spatial interpolation under the scenario with fewer gauges, particularly in estimating precipitation occurrence. The multistage modified schemes in this study, especially the DML scheme, exhibit potential in near-real time and sub-daily scale applications. Multistage schemes for NRT SPP modification are helpful for obtaining high-quality precipitation estimates.

The Potential of Deep Learning for Satellite Rainfall Detection over Data-Scarce Regions, the West African Savanna

Food and economic security in West Africa rely heavily on rainfed agriculture and are threatened by climate change and demographic growth. Accurate rainfall information is therefore crucial to tackling these challenges. Particularly, information about the occurrence and length of droughts as well as the onset date of the rainy season is essential for agricultural planning. However, existing rainfall models fail to accurately represent the highly variable and sparsely monitored West African rainfall patterns. In this paper, we show the potential of deep learning (DL) to model rainfall in the region and propose a methodology to develop DL models in data-scarce areas. We built two DL models for satellite rainfall (rain/no-rain) detection over northern Ghana from Meteosat TIR data based on standard DL architectures: Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and convolutional long short-term memory neural networks (ConvLSTM). The Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission (IMERG) and Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Imagery Using an Artificial Neural Network Cloud Classification System (PERSIANN-CCS) products are used as benchmarks. We use rain gauge data from the Trans-African Hydro-Meteorological Observatory (TAHMO) for model development and performance evaluation. We show that our models compare well against existing products despite being considerably simpler, developed with a small training dataset—i.e., 8 stations covering 2.5 years with 20.4% of the data missing—and using TIR data alone. Concretely, our models consistently outperform PERSIANN-CCS for rain/no-rain detection at a sub-daily timescale. While IMERG is the overall best performer, the DL models perform better in the second half of the rainy season despite their simplicity (i.e., up to 120 k parameters). Our results suggest that DL-based regional models are a promising alternative to state-of-the-art global products for providing regional rainfall information, especially in meteorologically complex regions such as the (sub)tropics, which are poorly covered by ground-based rainfall observations.

Representativeness of Two Global Gridded Precipitation Data Sets in the Intensity of Surface Short-Term Precipitation over China

This study evaluates the representativeness of two widely used next-generation global satellite precipitation estimates data for short-term precipitation over China, namely the satellite data from the Climate Prediction Center morphing (CMORPH) and the satellite data from the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission. These two satellite precipitation data sets were compared with the hourly liquid in-situ precipitation from China national surface stations from 2016 to 2020. The results showed that the GPM precipitation data has better representativeness of surface short-term precipitation than that of the CMORPH data, and these two quantitative precipitation estimate (QPE) data sets underestimated extreme precipitation. Moreover, we analyzed the influence of the error between two QPE data sets and the in-situ precipitation on the classification of short-term precipitation intensity. China uses 8.1–16 mm/h as the definition of heavy precipitation, but the accuracy of the satellite QPE product was different due to the different lowest threshold of heavy rain (more than 8.1 mm/h or more than 16 mm/h). Increasing the threshold value of the QPE data for short-term strong precipitation resulted in lower accuracy for detecting such events, but higher accuracy for detecting moderate intensity rainfall. When studying short-term strong precipitation over China using precipitation grade, selecting an appropriate threshold was important to ensure accurate judgments. Additionally, it is important to account for errors caused by QPE data, which can significantly affect the accuracy of precipitation grading.

Evaluation of the Spatiotemporal Distribution of Precipitation Using 28 Precipitation Indices and 4 IMERG Datasets over Nepal

Accurate accounting of spatiotemporal variability of precipitation is essential for understanding the changing climate. Among the available precipitation estimates, the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) is an international satellite network providing advanced global precipitation estimates. The integrated multi-satellite retrievals for GPM (IMERG) algorithm combines information from the GPM satellite constellation to estimate precipitation and yields a better performance in detecting precipitation events and spatial resolution. Here, we used twenty years (2001–2020) of IMERG Final data over the entire Nepal to analyze the spatial and temporal distribution of precipitation. This study evaluates the dynamic characteristics of the precipitation amounts, intensities, frequencies, and other relevant data across Nepal, using four IMERG datasets: (i) microwave only, (ii) infrared only, (iii) multi satellites gauge uncalibrated, and (iv) multi satellites gauge calibrated. A total of 28 precipitation indices was computed: threshold-based counts, consecutive days, precipitation amounts and extremes, precipitation intensity, percentile-based extremities, proportion-based indices, and additional seasonal indices. Results show that all four IMERG datasets are promising in capturing spatial details. The frequency of wet days corresponds with ground-based precipitation. Still, most indices, including consecutive wet days, annual and monsoon precipitation, and days when precipitation equaled or exceeded 20 and 50 mm, were substantially underestimated. In addition, the microwave-only dataset highly underestimated the precipitation amount. Notably, a substantial proportion of false alarms is a problem for all four IMERG datasets. Moreover, our results demonstrate that the IMERG uncalibrated dataset tends to overestimate precipitation during heavy precipitation events. These advantages and shortcomings of IMERG datasets over the rugged terrain of Nepal can provide useful feedback for sensor and algorithm developers to overcome limitations and improve retrieval algorithms. The study findings are helpful to the broader data users and practitioners for effective water decision applications.

Spatio-temporal performance evaluation of 14 global precipitation estimation products across river basins in southwest Iran

Study regionKarkheh and Karun basins (29°−35°N, 46°−52°E) are two large river basins (area 51,000 and 67,000 km2, respectively) with complex topography in southwest Iran. Study focusAccess to spatio-temporally consistent precipitation data is a key requirement for hydrological studies, especially in data-scarce regions. This study evaluated 14 global precipitation products against gauge observations from 2003 to 2012 in Karun and Karkheh basins, southwest Iran. Different categorical and statistical indices at varying spatial and temporal resolution, including Kling-Gupta Efficiency (KGE), bias, correlation coefficient, and variability ratio, were used to evaluate the products. New hydrological insights for the regionFor daily time steps, TMPA-3B42V7.0, MERRA-2, and CMORPH-BLDV1.0 outperformed all other products, with KGE > 0.3. TMPA-3B42V7.0, MERRA-2, and PERSIANN-CDR were the best-performing products for monthly time steps, with KGE> 0.5. ERA5-Land showed the highest positive bias (bias>1.5) compared with in-situ observations, particularly for mountainous southeastern parts of Karun basin. Overall, bias-adjusted products obtained by merging ground-based observations in the estimations outperformed the unadjusted versions. The spatial distribution of statistical error metrics indicated that almost all products showed their greatest uncertainties for mountainous regions due to complex precipitation processes in these regions. These results can contribute significantly to hydrological and water resources planning measures in the study region, including early flood warning systems, drought monitoring, and optimization of dam operation.

Precipitation over the U.S. Coastal Land/Water Using Gauge-Corrected Multi-Radar/Multi-Sensor System and Three Satellite Products

The weather and climate over the coastal regions have received increasing attention because of substantial population growth, the rising sea level, and extreme weather. Satellite remote sensing provides global precipitation estimates (including coastal land/ocean). While these datasets have been extensively evaluated over land, they have rarely been assessed over coastal ocean. As precipitation radars cover both coastal land and ocean, we used the Multi-Radar/Multi-Sensor System (MRMS) gauge-corrected precipitation product from 2018 to 2020 to evaluate three widely used satellite-based precipitation products over the U.S. coastal land versus the ocean (and the water over the Great Lakes). These products included the Integrated Multi-satellite Retrievals for GPM (IMERG), Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information using Artificial Neural Networks (PERSIANN), and Climate Prediction Center Morphing technique (CMORPH). The MRMS data showed a precipitation climatology difference between the coastal land and the ocean that was higher in the winter and lower in the summer and autumn. IMERG and CMORPH performed best over land and water, respectively, while PERSIANN was the most consistent in its performance over land versus water. Heavy precipitation was overestimated by the three products, with larger overestimates over water than over land. These results were not affected by the MRMS uncertainties due to the gauge correction or by the use of different versions.

Comprehensive evaluation of mainstream gridded precipitation datasets in the cold season across the Tibetan Plateau

New hydrological insights for the regionThe observations and these six precipitation products all revealed high precipitation occurs in the eastern and southeastern TP, and low precipitation occurs in the Qaidam Basin. But in the western regions with sparse gauge networks, the spatial patterns revealed by these six products were different. The precipitation occurrences in the cold season detected by CMFD had the highest accuracy, followed by AIMERG and IMERG, while CHIRPS had the worst accuracy. CMFD, IMERG and AIMERG outperformed CHIRPS, ERA5-Land and PERSIANN-CCS-CDR against observations at the annual and monthly scale, ERA5-Land and PERSIANN-CCS-CDR overestimated while AIMERG, CHIRPS, CMFD and IMERG underestimated cold season precipitation. CMFD had the highest accuracy when using the total adjusted observations as a reference at monthly scale, while IMERG had the highest accuracy when only using the adjusted precipitation by Geonor gauge as a reference.

Exploring the possible role of satellite-based rainfall data in estimating inter- and intra-annual global rainfall erosivity

Abstract. Despite recent developments in modeling global soil erosion by water, to date, no substantial progress has been made towards more dynamic inter- and intra-annual assessments. In this regard, the main challenge is still represented by the limited availability of high temporal resolution rainfall data needed to estimate rainfall erosivity. As the availability of high temporal resolution rainfall data will most likely not increase in future decades since the monitoring networks have been declining since the 1980s, the suitability of alternative approaches to estimate global rainfall erosivity using satellite-based rainfall data was explored in this study. For this purpose, we used the high spatial and temporal resolution global precipitation estimates obtained with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Climate Data Record (CDR) Climate Prediction Center MORPHing (CMORPH) technique. Such high spatial and temporal (30 min) resolution data have not yet been used for the estimation of rainfall erosivity on a global scale. Alternatively, the erosivity density (ED) concept was also used to estimate global rainfall erosivity. The obtained global estimates of rainfall erosivity were validated against the pluviograph data included in the Global Rainfall Erosivity Database (GloREDa). Overall, results indicated that the CMORPH estimates have a marked tendency to underestimate rainfall erosivity when compared to the GloREDa estimates. The most substantial underestimations were observed in areas with the highest rainfall erosivity values. At the continental level, the best agreement between annual CMORPH and interpolated GloREDa rainfall erosivity maps was observed in Europe, while the worst agreement was detected in Africa and South America. Further analyses conducted at the monthly scale for Europe revealed seasonal misalignments, with the occurrence of underestimation of the CMORPH estimates in the summer period and overestimation in the winter period compared to GloREDa. The best agreement between the two approaches to estimate rainfall erosivity was found for fall, especially in central and eastern Europe. Conducted analysis suggested that satellite-based approaches for estimation of rainfall erosivity appear to be more suitable for low-erosivity regions, while in high-erosivity regions (> 1000–2000 MJ mm ha−1 h−1 yr−1) and seasons (> 150–250 MJ mm ha−1 h−1 month−1), the agreement with estimates obtained from pluviographs (GloREDa) is lower. Concerning the ED estimates, this second approach to estimate rainfall erosivity yielded better agreement with GloREDa estimates compared to CMORPH, which could be regarded as an expected result since this approach indirectly uses the GloREDa data. The application of a simple-linear function correction of the CMORPH data was applied to provide a better fit to GloREDa and correct systematic underestimation. This correction improved the performance of CMORPH, but in areas with the highest rainfall erosivity rates, the underestimation was still observed. A preliminary trend analysis of the CMORPH rainfall erosivity estimates was also performed for the 1998–2019 period to investigate possible changes in the rainfall erosivity at a global scale, which has not yet been conducted using high-frequency data such as CMORPH. According to this trend analysis, an increasing and statistically significant trend was more frequently observed than a decreasing trend.

Global Tropical Cyclone Precipitation Estimation via a Multitask Convolutional Neural Network Based on HURSAT-B1 Data

Fast and accurate global tropical cyclone (TC) precipitation estimation from satellite observations is still a challenging issue. In this article, we propose an effective model based on a multitask convolutional neural network (CNN) to estimate near-real-time global TC precipitation from HURSAT-B1 data. Our network mainly consists of three modules: the feature extraction module, the wind grade classification module, and the precipitation estimation module. The first module aims at extracting the spatial features of satellite imageries, the second module focuses on classifying the wind grades of the satellite imageries into six categories that are used to assist in estimating TC precipitation, and the third module is to estimate TC precipitation. To evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed model, we compare it with multiple linear regression (MLR) and random forest (RF) models based on integrated multisatellite retrievals for the global precipitation measurement (GPM) mission (IMERG). Besides, four typical TC events are selected to specifically analyze the temporal and spatial distribution of TC precipitation estimation. Experimental results show that the probability of detection and accuracy achieved by our proposed model are 0.68 and 0.81, while the correlation coefficient (CC) and MSE are 0.61 and 7.80, respectively. In terms of the four TC events, our proposed model obtains a more consistent and continuous spatial distribution of precipitation than MLR and RF. More importantly, our proposed model can achieve high spatiotemporal results, which has the potential to serve as an operational algorithm for global TC precipitation estimation.

A Comprehensive Evaluation of Near-Real-Time and Research Products of IMERG Precipitation over India for the Southwest Monsoon Period

Precipitation is one of the integral components of the global hydrological cycle. Accurate estimation of precipitation is vital for numerous applications ranging from hydrology to climatology. Following the launch of the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Core Observatory, the Integrated Multi-satellite Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) precipitation product was released. The IMERG provides global precipitation estimates at finer spatiotemporal resolution (e.g., 0.1°/half-hourly) and has shown to be better than other contemporary multi-satellite precipitation products over most parts of the globe. In this study, near-real-time and research products of IMERG have been extensively evaluated against a daily rain-gauge-based precipitation dataset over India for the southwest monsoon period. In addition, the current version 6 of the IMERG research product or Final Run (IMERG-F V6) has been compared with its predecessor, version 5, and error characteristics of IMERG-F V6 for pre-GPM and GPM periods have been assessed. The spatial distributions of different error metrics over the country show that both near-real-time IMERG products (e.g., Early and Late Runs) have similar error characteristics in precipitation estimation. However, near-real-time products have larger errors than IMERG-F V6, as expected. Bias in all-India daily mean rainfall in the near-real-time IMERG products is about 3–4 times larger than research product. Both V5 and V6 IMERG-F estimates show similar error characteristics in daily precipitation estimation over the country. Similarly, both near-real-time and research products show similar characteristics in the detection of rainy days. However, IMERG-F V6 exhibits better performance in precipitation estimation and detection of rainy days during the GPM period (2014–2017) than the pre-GPM period (2010–2013). The contribution of different rainfall intensity intervals to total monsoon rainfall is captured well by the IMERG estimates. Furthermore, results reveal that IMERG estimates under-detect and overestimate light rainfall intensity of 2.5–7.5 mm day−1, which needs to be improved in the next release. The results of this study would be beneficial for end-users to integrate this multi-satellite product in any specific application.

PERSIANN-CCS-CDR, a 3-hourly 0.04\xb0 global precipitation climate data record for heavy precipitation studies

Accurate long-term global precipitation estimates, especially for heavy precipitation rates, at fine spatial and temporal resolutions is vital for a wide variety of climatological studies. Most of the available operational precipitation estimation datasets provide either high spatial resolution with short-term duration estimates or lower spatial resolution with long-term duration estimates. Furthermore, previous research has stressed that most of the available satellite-based precipitation products show poor performance for capturing extreme events at high temporal resolution. Therefore, there is a need for a precipitation product that reliably detects heavy precipitation rates with fine spatiotemporal resolution and a longer period of record. Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information using Artificial Neural Networks-Cloud Classification System-Climate Data Record (PERSIANN-CCS-CDR) is designed to address these limitations. This dataset provides precipitation estimates at 0.04° spatial and 3-hourly temporal resolutions from 1983 to present over the global domain of 60°S to 60°N. Evaluations of PERSIANN-CCS-CDR and PERSIANN-CDR against gauge and radar observations show the better performance of PERSIANN-CCS-CDR in representing the spatiotemporal resolution, magnitude, and spatial distribution patterns of precipitation, especially for extreme events.

Global component analysis of errors in three satellite-only global precipitation estimates

Abstract. Revealing the error components of satellite-only precipitation products (SPPs) can help algorithm developers and end-users understand their error features and improve retrieval algorithms. Here, two error decomposition schemes are employed to explore the error components of the IMERG-Late, GSMaP-MVK, and PERSIANN-CCS SPPs over different seasons, rainfall intensities, and topography classes. Global maps of the total bias (total mean squared error) and its three (two) independent components are depicted for the first time. The evaluation results for similar regions are discussed, and it is found that the evaluation results for one region cannot be extended to another similar region. Hit and/or false biases are the major components of the total bias in most overland regions globally. The systematic error contributes less than 20 % of the total error in most areas. Large systematic errors are primarily due to missed precipitation. It is found that the SPPs show different topographic patterns in terms of systematic and random errors. Notably, among the SPPs, GSMaP-MVK shows the strongest topographic dependency of the four bias scores. A novel metric, namely the normalized error component (NEC), is proposed as a means to isolate the impact of topography on the systematic and random errors. Potential methods of improving satellite precipitation retrievals and error adjustment models are discussed.

Multi sources hydrological assessment over Vu Gia Thu Bon Basin, Vietnam

ABSTRACT The study aims to evaluate the long-term accuracy of global precipitation (Climate Prediction Center (CPC) and Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information using Artificial Neural Networks – Climate Data Record (PERSIANN-CDR)) along with raingauge datasets at multiple temporal scales in the Vu Gia Thu Bon basin, Vietnam. Since there are few rainfall stations in this basin, it is important to validate multisource data for multiple purposes. This is the first time that a lumped hydrological model (i.e. Probability Distributed Moisture (PDM)) has been used for this basin. Various statistical indicators, including the correlation coefficient, mean absolute error (MAE), root mean square error (RMSE), percent bias (BIAS) and Taylor diagram, were used to evaluate the applicability of the global precipitation data and the PDM model. The precipitation datasets showed a good correlation with the raingauge rainfall data. In contrast, CPC underestimates while PERSIANN-CDR overestimates the raingauge rainfall. In general, PERSIANN-CDR performed slightly better than CPC. The daily streamflow simulation driven by PDM and all data sources underestimates the actual flow.

Impact of sampling of GPM orbital data on streamflow simulations

Global precipitation estimation depends on constellations of mainly passive microwave sensors along with satellite radars and constellations of geosynchronous earth orbit infrared sensors. With passive microwave constellations, a persisting challenge is the limited sampling, which impacts applications such as hydrological modeling. This study presents a framework to examine the impact of the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) orbital sampling on streamflow simulations. Orbital data from the GPM Dual Precipitation Radar (DPR) 2A-Ku is used within the Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) model to derive ensembles of runoff simulations. Ensembles of synthetic precipitation fields are generated at different sampling intervals which are representative of GPM orbital data products with the Satellite Rainfall Error Model (SREM-2D) over the Hirakud catchment in the Indian subcontinent over a period of two years (2015–2016). The NOAA-NCEP Climate Prediction Center (CPC) morphing technique (CMORPH) satellite-based gridded rainfall product is considered as the reference rainfall for our study. Sampling uncertainty in orbital precipitation data is shown to amplify in streamflow simulations. The statistical analysis indicates that increasing sampling rates tend to generate more realistic land surface fluxes. The results from our study indicate that streamflow simulations from VIC model using precipitation forcing at 6-hourly integration outperforms the simulations as compared to 3-hourly and 12-hourly forcing integration times. This is exemplified by the statistical indices, with mean relative error of 0.17 for simulations with 3-hourly forcing, 0.12 for simulation with 6-hourly forcing, and 0.57 for 12-hourly forcing. The relative Root-Mean-Square-Error (RMSE) for 3-hourly, 6-hourly, 12-hourly for 2015 are 0.31, 0.25, 1.43 and for 2016 are 0.25, 0.15, 1.06, respectively. It can be noticed that both mean relative error and relative RMSE show a similar pattern for both years. A generic framework is therefore proposed to study the manifestation of satellite constellation sampling uncertainty in hydrologic simulations, which are crucial for future missions such as the CubeSat-based Temporal Experiment for Storms and Tropical Systems, and the Time-Resolved Observations of precipitation structure and storm intensity with a constellation of smallsats.

Improving Rain/No-Rain Detection Skill by Merging Precipitation Estimates from Different Sources

AbstractRain/no-rain detection error is a key source of uncertainty in regional and global precipitation products that propagates into offline hydrological and land surface modeling simulations. Such detection error is difficult to evaluate and/or filter without access to high-quality reference precipitation datasets. For cases where such access is not available, this study proposes a novel approach for improved rain/no-rain detection. Based on categorical triple collocation (CTC) and a probabilistic framework, a weighted merging algorithm (CTC-M) is developed to combine noisy, but independent, precipitation products into an optimal binary rain/no-rain time series. Compared with commonly used approaches that directly apply the best parent product for rain/no-rain detection, the superiority of CTC-M is demonstrated analytically and numerically using spatially dense precipitation measurements over Europe. Our analysis also suggests that CTC-M is tolerant to a range of cross-correlated rain/no-rain detection errors and detection biases of the parent products. As a result, CTC-M will benefit global precipitation estimation by improving the representation of precipitation occurrence in gauge-based and multisource merged precipitation products.
