Microstrip antenna system for communication capabilities applications

In this comparative study, seven different microstrip antenna shapes, including rectangular, elliptical, triangular, inset fed, H-notch, and E-notch, were observed and analyzed, focusing on their suitability for global positioning system (GPS) application in microsatellites. To enable meaningful comparison, the study utilized the optimal resonant frequency in GPS applications, which is 1.57542 GHz. All the antenna designs have been generated using MATLAB’s Antenna Toolbox and are 100% efficient under ideal conditions with zero polarization loss, which is assumed in the link budget analysis. The results show that each antenna shape has been found to offer distinct advantages and limitations. Along with this, the circular and elliptical patch antenna presented a well-balanced performance, which is suitable for GPS applications. However, the elliptical shape falls behind the circular shape, which was determined to be the most optimal choice for GPS application, providing excellent isotropic antenna gain, return loss, voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR), and strong link budget analysis results.

Microstrip Patch Antenna Design at 10 GHz for X Band Applications

Microstrip patch antennas are used in satellite imaging systems, wireless communication equipment, military radios, GPS (Global Positioning System) and GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) applications. Its advantages are its small size and light weight, thin structure, low power consumption, use in dual frequency applications, and patching in various geometric shapes. Developing technology has facilitated and accelerated the production of microstrip antennas. In this study, microstrip antenna design operating at 10 GHz frequency for X band applications has been made. X band is used for air traffic control, weather traffic control, vessel traffic control, defense tracking and vehicle speed detection, terrestrial communications and networking, space communications and amateur radio. HFSS program was used in antenna design. AWR program was used to find transmission line parameters. In addition, MATLAB program was used to calculate some parameters. First of all, information is given about the working principle of the antenna, the selected dielectric layer and the working frequency. Schematic drawings of the designed antenna were made from above and from the side. S11 reflection coefficient magnitude graphs are drawn below and above the operating frequency. The radiation pattern is drawn for the E-plane and H-plane at the operating frequency. 3-D (dimensional) plot of antenna gain at operating frequency is drawn. The simulations performed have shown that the designed antenna works successfully.

Tri-Band Circularly Polarized Annular Slot Antenna for GPS and CNSS Applications

A single-feed tri-band circularly polarized (CP) annular slot antenna is presented. The antenna structure is composed of two non-concentric annular slots that are fed by an L-shaped series step impedance microstrip line configuration. The proposed antenna is designed to operate at the L1 & L2 bands of the Global Positioning System (GPS) and the frequency band of the Compass Navigation Satellite System (CNSS). The measured results show that the impedance bandwidths are good for all bands. And the radiation patterns with good CP characteristics are obtained at the three resonant frequencies.

A Comprehensive Review of Application of RS, GIS and GPS in Agriculture India

Food and fibre, two of humanity's most fundamental requirements, are met by agriculture. Precision agriculture examines how technology might be applied to enhance agricultural practises relative to traditional methods while minimising negative environmental effects. Precision agriculture greatly benefits from the deployment of remote sensing technologies, which also presents new chances to enhance agricultural practises. Geographically, latitude and longitude data can be recorded for field data (slope, aspect, nutrients, and yield) using the global positioning system (GPS). Because of its ability to continuously determine and record the right position, it can build a larger database for the user. Geographic Information Systems (GIS), which can handle and store these data, are needed for the additional analysis. Occupational Stress Associated With Technological Diversion Among Pretrial Services Officers: A Qualitative Case Study of GPS Supervision for Intimate Partner and Domestic Violence Cases

The application of global positioning system (GPS) technology as a pretrial diversion mechanism to monitor intimate partner and domestic violence (IPV/DV) cases has become increasingly common. As more jurisdictions implement GPS technology, there is a need to understand the workplace experiences of community corrections officers with this nascent supervision strategy. This qualitative case study draws upon the experiences gleaned from in-depth interviews with all the pretrial officers assigned to technology caseloads ( n = 8) in a single jurisdiction to explore prevailing occupational stress themes associated with GPS supervision for IPV/DV cases as a diversion from pretrial detention. The results reinforce and extend a range of well-established stressors in the extant literature related to pretrial officers managing a GPS caseload of IPV/DV defendants. The findings highlight that pretrial officers using GPS technology are expected to serve in other unique roles (e.g., critical educator, software engineer, data collection specialist, communication expert, and victim advocate) in the course of their duties that were unanticipated sources of occupational stress. Implications for policy and practice are discussed.

Dual-band circularly polarized asymmetric dipole array antenna for GPS L1 and L2 bands

A dual-band, circularly polarized (CP) asymmetric dipole array antenna for Global Positioning System (GPS) applications with a wide beam is presented in this paper. The proposed antenna comprises two different-sized printed crossed dipoles with integrated baluns fed by an asymmetric feeding network to achieve dual-band functionality. Using two branch-line couplers with different dimensions in the feeding network performs Right-Hand Circular Polarization (RHCP) operation at GPS L1 and L2 bands. According to the experiments, the proposed antenna has wide impedance bandwidths of 24.82% (1139.5–1462.4 MHz) and 14.82% (1500.4–1740.5 MHz), and 3 dB Axial-Ratio (AR) bandwidth of 37.4% (1132.3–1653.2 MHz) to cover the GPS L1 and L2 bands. Furthermore, at 1227 MHz frequency, the antenna has a gain of 4.65 dBic, and a 3 dB AR beamwidth of 148.2° facing the sky. Also, at 1575 MHz frequency, a gain of 5.25 dBic and a 3 dB AR beamwidth of 139.3° are achieved.

Impact of sand and dust storms on tropospheric parameter estimation by GPS

The transport of dust from the Middle East and African deserts affects European and Asian countries at certain times of the year, especially in spring. Turkey is one of these countries, and many dust storm events have occurred in the first half of 2022, which have affected especially the southeastern part of Anatolia. Apart from threatening human health, dust and sand particles, which are described as particulate matter, may possibly affect Global Positioning System (GPS) signals. The purpose of this research is to look into the effects of particulate matter less than 10μm (PM10) on GPS-estimated precipitable water vapor (PWV). Hourly PM10 and PWV data between April 1, 2022, and June 10, 2022, were utilized. Four different extreme dust concentration events and a benchmark period were investigated separately. Hourly data results showed that correlation coefficients vary according to events, wind directions, and the distance between GPS stations and air quality monitoring stations. Also, other meteorological parameters that affect PWV, such as temperature, relative humidity, and pressure, were investigated and found to have no anomalies that could affect PWV. Hourly and daily correlation coefficients in the benchmark period were significantly lower compared to dusty days, which indicates that there is no real correlation between PM10 and PWV concentrations in clear air conditions. Only with the increase of PM10 to extreme levels does the relationship show itself. Therefore, this study suggests that for all GPS applications, such as positioning or PWV estimation, PM10 concentrations should be considered.

Raspberry Pi Reflector (RPR): A Low‐Cost Water‐Level Monitoring System Based on GNSS Interferometric Reflectometry

AbstractAlthough reflectometry is not the primary application of Global Positioning System (GPS) and similar Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), fast‐growing GNSS tracking networks has led to the emergence of GNSS interferometric reflectometry technique for monitoring surface changes such as water level. However, scientific‐grade or geodetic GNSS instruments are expensive, which is a limiting factor for their prompt and more widespread deployment as a dedicated environmental sensor. We present a prototype called Raspberry Pi Reflector (RPR) that includes a low‐cost and low‐maintenance single‐frequency GPS module and a navigation antenna connected to an inexpensive Raspberry Pi microcomputer. A unit has been successfully operating for almost 2 years since March 2020 in Wesel (Germany) next to the Rhine river. Sub‐daily and daily water levels are retrieved using spectral analysis of reflection data. The river level measurements from RPR are compared with a co‐located river gauge. We find an Root‐Mean‐Square Error (RMSE) of 7.6 cm in sub‐daily estimates and 6 cm in daily means of river level. In August 2021, we changed the antenna orientation from upright to sideways facing the river. The RMSE reduced to 3 cm (sub‐daily) and 1.5 cm (daily) with the new orientation. While satellite radar altimetry techniques have been utilized to monitor water levels with global coverage, their measurements are associated with moderate uncertainties and temporal resolution. Therefore, such low‐cost and high‐precision instruments can be paired with satellite data for calibrating, validating and modeling purposes. These instruments are financially (<US$ 150 as of November 2021) and technically accessible worldwide.

Travel Time Estimation Using Support Vector Regression on Model with 8 Features

Purpose: In travelling, we need to predict travel time so that itinerary is as expected. This paper proposes Support Vector Regression (SVR) to build a prediction model. In this case, we will estimate travel time in the Bali area. We propose to use a regression model with 8 features, i.e., time, weather, route, wind speed, day, precipitation, temperature and humidity information.Methods: In this study, we collect real-time data from Global Positioning System (GPS) and weather applications. We divide our data into two types: training dataset consisting of 177 data and testing dataset comprising 51 data. The Support Vector Regression (SVR) method is used in the training stage to build a model representing data. To validate the model, error measurements were carried out by calculating the values of R2, Accuracy, MAE (Mean Absolute Error), RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) and Accuracy.Result: From the research results, the model obtained is the SVR model with parameters γ=0.125, ε=0.1 and C = 1000, which has a value of R2= 0.9860528612283006. Later, we predict travel times on testing data using the SVR model that has been obtained. Based on the result of the research, our model has a 0.8008 MAE (Mean Absolute Error), 1.2817 RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) and 95.3369% Accuracy.Novelty: In this study, we use 8 features to estimate travel time in the Bali area. Furthermore, we will compare the KNN regression method (previous studies) with Support Vector Regression (SVR) (proposed method) on a model with 8 features to estimate travel time.

Principal Component Analysis (PCA)–Geographic Information System (GIS) Modeling for Groundwater and Associated Health Risks in Abbottabad, Pakistan

Drinking water quality is a major problem in Pakistan, especially in the Abbottabad region of Pakistan. The main objective of this study was to use a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and integrated Geographic Information System (GIS)-based statistical model to estimate the spatial distribution of exceedance levels of groundwater quality parameters and related health risks for two union councils (Mirpur and Jhangi) located in Abbottabad, Pakistan. A field survey was conducted, and samples were collected from 41 sites to analyze the groundwater quality parameters. The data collection includes the data for 15 water quality parameters. The Global Positioning System (GPS) Essentials application was used to obtain the geographical coordinates of sampling locations in the study area. The GPS Essentials is an android-based GPS application commonly used for collection of geographic coordinates. After sampling, the laboratory analyses were performed to evaluate groundwater quality parameters. PCA was applied to the results, and the exceedance values were calculated by subtracting them from the World Health Organization (WHO) standard parameter values. The nine groundwater quality parameters such as Arsenic (As), Lead (Pb), Mercury (Hg), Cadmium (Cd), Iron (Fe), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Electrical Conductivity (EC), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), and Colony Forming Unit (CFU) exceeded the WHO threshold. The highly exceeded parameters, i.e., As, Pb, Hg, Cd, and CFU, were selected for GIS-based modeling. The Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) technique was used to model the exceedance values. The PCA produced five Principal Components (PCs) with a cumulative variance of 76%. PC-1 might be the indicator of health risks related to CFU, Hg, and Cd. PC-2 could be the sign of natural pollution. PC-3 might be the indicator of health risks due to As. PC-4 and PC-5 might be indicators of natural processes. GIS modeling revealed that As, Pb, Cd, CFU, and Hg exceeded levels 3, 4, and 5 in both union councils. Therefore, there could be greater risk for exposure to diseases such as cholera, typhoid, dysentery, hepatitis, giardiasis, cryptosporidiosis, and guinea worm infection. The combination of laboratory analysis with GIS and statistical techniques provided new dimensions of modeling research for analyzing groundwater and health risks.

Design and Study of a Microstrip Patch Antenna for GPS Application

A microstrip patch antenna for Global Positioning System (GPS) application is presented in this study. It has a rectangular shape with two notched slots. The notched slots are introduced to improve the adaptation between the microstrip line and the antenna. The antenna was designed and simulated by CST using FR-4 material as the substrate with relative permittivity of 4.3. The proposed microstrip antenna is designed to operate in the GPS band frequency from 1.555 GHz to 1.595 GHz. The performance analysis of the proposed antennas has been carried out in terms of return loss (dB), gain (dB), and VSWR.

Design of a compact and miniature band-pass filter for global positioning system applications

In this paper, <span>a novel compact band pass filter (BPF) is proposed for global positioning system (GPS) applications. The proposed filter which is based on a microstrip resonator is mounted on a low cost RO4000 substrate with a dielectric constant εr=3.5, a thickness h=1.542 mm, a loss tangent tan (δ)=0.0027. It has a bandwidth from 1.55 GHz to 1.72 GHz. This filter is optimized and validated by using two electromagnetic solvers. The area occupied by this BPF is 33.6×41.24 mm<sup>2</sup>. The final circuit is a low cost BPF and can be associated with passive and active circuits due to the miniature dimensions.</span>

New Zealand O&M instructors’ perspectives about, and experience in, the use of tactile maps with people with vision impairment

This qualitative study explored the perspectives and experience of New Zealand O&M instructors in the use of tactile maps with people with vision impairment. In-depth, open-ended, and semi-structured interviews were used to gather information from four participants, who were qualified O&M instructors. The interviews were analysed using thematic analysis. Three inter-related themes emerged from the data that effected the O&M’s tactile map usage: (1) the tactile map and the O&M instructor, (2) student needs and experiences, and (3) time and resources. Microcapsule and thermoform maps were the least used map medium, with collage map techniques used frequently by half of the participants. The most preferred tactile maps were ready-made tactile map kits, and instructors drawing directly on the students’ hand or back. Tactile maps were used mostly by the participants to meet the orientation needs of motivated students, who were blind, had no visual memory, or did not use their vision for orientation purposes. Tactile maps were considered a vital orientation tool when the participants were teaching such students, and the participants did not believe Global Positioning System (GPS) applications would fully replace tactile maps. However, in general, the participants revealed that tactile maps were used infrequently as an orientation tool in New Zealand because of caseload makeup, limited time, and limited resources. In order to increase the use of tactile maps, tactile map resources may need to be more readily available. In addition, further research is needed about the characteristics of people with a vision impairment, who benefit from tactile maps, along with the effect of tactile maps usage on an O&M instructor’s caseload and time, so that O&M instructors can plan accordingly and people with a vision impairment can continue to benefit from this important orientation tool.

Identifying Origin-Destination Trips from GPS Data – Application in Travel Time Reliability of Dedicated Trucks

The advancement of data collection technologies has brought an upsurge in GPS applications. For example, travel behaviour research has benefited from the integration of multiple sources of Global Positioning System (GPS) data. However, the effective use of such data is still impeded by the challenge in data processing. For instance, GPS data, despite providing detailed spatial movement information, do not label the starting and finishing points of a trip, especially for commercial trucks. Hence, there is a critical need to develop a trip identification method to effectively use the trajectory data provided by GPS without additional information. This paper focused on identifying trips from the raw GPS data. Specifically, a systematic method is proposed to extract trips on the basis of origin-destination (OD) pairs by using a 5-step procedure. An application was provided on estimating the performance of travel time reliability using three metrics based on the OD trips for each dedicated truck. The application showed that, in general, trucks on long-distance routes have less reliable travel times compared to trucks on short-distance routes. This paper provides an example of using GPS data, without further information, to study travel time for freight performance and similar needs of punctuality in logistics.

Toward an optimum design of fractal sausage Minkowski antenna for GPS applications

Fractal is one of the important tools to produce efficient and well-suited antennas for navigation systems. A novel design of broadband fractal sausage Minkowski antenna is described in this research article. Sausage Minkowski is designed and simulated for global positioning system (GPS) application that relies on fractal geometry using computer simulation studio microwave (CST MW) software. The substrate sheet is Roger TMM4 has of 4.5 dielectric constant and 1.6 mm altitude. A small metallic patch over a large metallic ground layer is made of perfect electric conductor (PEC) material. The suggested fractal antenna can be used efficiently in the military applications which demand a narrow spectrum and a tiny antenna profile. By introducing four various levels of fractal iteration models and compared each one to the other. The main aim of this work is to increase antenna gain and reduce the antenna size, in addition to improving the semi-flat voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) with respect to decreasing the resonance frequency is. For 10% decrease in the frequency for the 3rd iteration value led to a clear improvement in the antenna characteristics such as directivity, gain, and VSWR. The reflection coefficient and bandwidth remain in range.

Design and analysis of frequency reconfigurable antenna for global positioning system applications

A compact frequency reconfigurable antenna is designed and analyzed in this paper to operate with global positioning system (GPS) and worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) applications. The designed antenna is printed on flame resistant 4 (FR4) epoxy substrate with relative permittivity is 4.3, loss tangent of 0.03 and overall substrate with ground (GND) plane dimensions of (54.6x54.6x1.6) mm3 and patch dimensions of (45x45) mm2. The antenna is designed and optimized using computer simulation technology (CST) package through series of parametric studies in order to cover the GPS, WiMAX bands with resonant frequency of 1.229 GHz, 1.575 GHz, and 3.34 GHz. Two triangular slots at the patch sides and single elliptical slot at the middle are etched for the best antenna performance. The designed antenna performs frequency re-configurability by using PIN diode switch at the inset feed to change the operating frequencies from double band operation at (1.575 and 3.34) GHz to single band at 1.229 GHz under S11 ≤-10 dB. The proposed antenna produces accepted simulation results with voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR), maximum radiation efficiency and gain of less than 2.76% and 7.035 dBi respectively.

Estimator-Based GPS Attitude and Angular Velocity Determination

In this paper, the estimator-based Global Positioning System (GPS) attitude and angular velocity determination is presented. Outputs of the attitude estimator include the attitude angles and attitude rates or body angular velocities, depending on the design of estimator. Traditionally as a position, velocity and time sensor, the GPS also offers a free attitude-determination interferometer. GPS research and applications to the field of attitude determination using carrier phase or Doppler measurement has been extensively conducted. The raw attitude solution using the interferometry technique based on the least-squares approach is inherently noisy. The estimator such as the Kalman filter (KF) or extended Kalman filter (EKF) can be incorporated into the GPS interferometer, potentially providing several advantages, such as accuracy improvement, reliability enhancement, and real-time characteristics. Three estimator-based approaches are investigated for performance comparison, including (1) KF with measurement involving attitude angles only; (2) EKF with measurements based on attitude angles only; (3) EKF with measurements involving both attitude angles and body angular rates. The assistance from body mounted gyroscopes, if available, can be utilized as the measurements for further performance improvement, especially useful for the case of signal-challenged environment, such as the GPS outages. Modeling of the dynamic process involving the body angular rates and derivation of the related algorithm will be presented. Simulation results for various estimator-based approaches are conducted; performance comparison is presented for the case of GPS outages.

GPS Receiver Position Augmentation Using Correntropy Kalman Filter in Low Latitude Terrain

If any Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver is operated in low latitude regions or urban canyons, the visibility further reduces. These system constraints lead to many challenges in providing precise GPS position accuracy over the Indian subcontinent. As a result, the standalone GPS accuracy does not meet the aircraft landing requirements, such as Category I (CAT-I) Precision Approaches. However, the required accuracy can be achieved by augmenting the GPS. Among all these issues, the predominant factors that significantly influence the receiver position accuracy are selecting a user/receiver position estimation algorithm. In this article, a novel method is proposed based on correntropy and designated as Correntropy Kalman Filter (CKF) for precise GPS applications and GPS Aided Geosynchronous equatorial orbit Augmented Navigation (GAGAN) based aircraft landings over the low latitude Indian subcontinent. The real-world GPS data collected from a dual-frequency GPS receiver located in the southern region of the Indian subcontinent (IISc), Bangalore with Lat/Long: 13.021°N/ 77.5°E) is used for the performance evaluation of the proposed algorithm. Results prove that the proposed CKF algorithm exhibits significant improvement (up to 34%) in position estimation compared to the traditional Kalman Filter.
