Genetic Polymorphism of Interleukin-6 in Asymptomatic and ICU-Admitted COVID-19 Patients in Sulaymaniyah Province, Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

Background: The global pandemic of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has resulted in significant fatality rates. Clinical outcomes for affected individuals range from being asymptomatic to severe illnesses requiring intensive care unit (ICU) admission. Among the various factors contributing to the variation in clinical outcomes, host genetics play a prominent role. Interleukin-6 (IL6), a key player in immune responses, has been identified as having a crucial impact on viral infections, including the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Specifically, certain variations known as single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the IL6 promoter region have been found to significantly influence IL6 expression and the severity of viral infections. Materials and Methods: To explore the relationship between these genetic variations and COVID-19 in asymptomatic and ICU-admitted Kurdish patients, genetic sequencing was performed to determine the genotypes of nine IL6 SNPs. Results: The study findings revealed that although the proportion of the GG genotype of rs1800795 was slightly higher in asymptomatic COVID-19 cases, the difference was not statistically significant (chi2 = 2.666, p = 0.236). Notably, Kurdish patients displayed a uniform genetic makeup (monomorphic) for the dominant alleles of rs2069830 (C), rs142759801 (C), rs2069857 (C), rs2069829 (G), rs2234683 (G), rs13447446 (T), rs527770772 (C), and rs13447445 (C). Furthermore, patients carrying the haplotype GCGGCTCCC were found to have a 0.481-fold higher likelihood of being asymptomatic with COVID-19 (p = 0.016, OR = 0.481). Conclusions: This study demonstrates that the rs1800795 SNP is not statistically associated with COVID-19 at the genotype level. However, the presence of the dominant G allele of rs1800795 in the haplotype was found to be statistically associated with asymptomatic COVID-19 patients.

Rapid Nucleic Acid Diagnostic Technology for Pandemic Diseases.

The recent global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has enormously promoted the development of diagnostic technology. To control the spread of pandemic diseases and achieve rapid screening of the population, ensuring that patients receive timely treatment, rapid diagnosis has become the top priority in the development of clinical technology. This review article aims to summarize the current rapid nucleic acid diagnostic technologies applied to pandemic disease diagnosis, from rapid extraction and rapid amplification to rapid detection. We also discuss future prospects in the development of rapid nucleic acid diagnostic technologies.

Advances in researches on long coronavirus disease in children: a narrative review.

In the context of the global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), more than 700 million infections and millions of deaths have occurred in countries around the world. Currently, two main sequelae of this disease are considered to occur in children, namely, multi-system inflammatory syndrome in children and long COVID. Among these two, the incidence of long COVID is higher and its impact on the population is more extensive, which is the focus of us. However, due to the lack of relevant studies and the limitations of most studies, the studies on sequelae of COVID-19 infection lag behind those of adults, but they have begun to attract the attention of some clinicians and researchers. We aim to summarize the current knowledge of long COVID in children, helping pediatricians and researchers to better understand this disease and providing guidance on research and clinical treatment of it. We reviewed all the studies on "long COVID", pediatric, children, adolescent, post-COVID syndrome in PubMed published after 2019. This review summarizes the latest researches on epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, prevention and treatment of long COVID in children. Based on the existing research data, we summarized and analyzed the characteristics of long COVID in children, discovering the means to decipher the diagnosis of COVID-19 in children and some potential therapeutic treatments. We aim to summarize existing research on long COVID in children and help pediatricians and government agencies quickly understand the disease so that it can be used for clinical diagnosis, treatment and prevention in the population. In addition, providing a research basis for further researches on the cellular and even molecular level to explain the occurrence and development of diseases, and has a guiding role for future research direction.

Influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on the congenital heart surgery service in Lithuania.

CHD is a unique group of medical pathologies. Literature worldwide reports significant decrements in the case volume of patients with these conditions due to the recent global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019. The only centre providing congenital cardiac care for Lithuanian population is in a hospital which was the main medical institution for the sickest coronavirus disease 2019 patients. Hence, this centre had to maintain its service alongside the mobilisation of resources to tackle the crisis. To evaluate the effect of the pandemic on the service of congenital heart surgery in Lithuania. The activity of a single centre providing congenital heart care working in a main coronavirus 2019 pandemic hospital during the pandemic was analysed and compared to a matched period of pre-pandemic activity. The number of admitted patients was similar during both pre-pandemic and pandemic periods. During the pandemic period, younger patients were more often operated as urgent cases. Their postoperative length of stay was longer. However, there were no differences in early postoperative mortality between the two groups. It was possible to maintain an accessible and high-quality specialised congenital cardiac care for various age patients during global pandemic events, while working in the main pandemic hospital.

Community-Based Intervention for Elderly Patients with Diabetes Mellitus: Assessing the Effectiveness of a YouTube Self-Education Program during the Global COVID-19 Pandemic

Background: This study assessed a YouTube self-education program implemented for elderly patients with diabetes during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic at Hypertension and Diabetes Registration and Education Center (HDREC) in Hongcheon, Korea.Methods: Content analysis was conducted on diabetes-related videos uploaded on the YouTube channel ‘I want to know blood vessels!’ and the satisfaction of 266 patients with diabetes who participated in the online self-education program via a cross-sectional study was evaluated.Results: From 2020 to 2022, the HDREC periodically delivered a total of 38 diabetes care-related videos to this channel. The mean length of individual videos was approximately 7 minutes, and the total screening time for all videos reached about 289 minutes. Participants viewed videos on lifestyle habits such as nutrition care (up to 619 times), clinical understanding regarding diabetes (up to 578 times). In terms of satisfaction with self-education, 100% of the participants answered satisfied, and 100% answered helpful from video contents. The post-score (mean, 3.55 points) was significantly higher than the pre-score (mean, 2.43 points) after comparing the differences in knowledge levels of 74 patients who participated in this education program in 2022.Conclusion: Despite the stringent quarantine policies implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic, it is expected that our YouTube education strategy will be more accessible for diabetes self-care, and will improve treatment compliance of patients with diabetes. Further research should focus on devising a more appropriate method for developing educational content based on patients’ video inquiry patterns and preferences in future crises involving non-communicable diseases.

Effects of Lamiaceae family plants and their bioactive ingredients on coronavirus-induced lung inflammation.

Coronaviruses (CoVs) are a family of viruses that cause infection in respiratory and intestinal systems. Different types of CoVs, those responsible for the SARS-CoV and the new global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 in people, have been found. Some plants were used as food additives: spices and dietary and/or medicinal purposes in folk medicine. We aimed to provide evidence about possible effects of two Lamiaceae family plants on control or treatment of CoVs-induced inflammation. The keywords including coronaviruses, Thymus vulgaris, Zataria multiflora, thymol, carvacrol, antivirus, and anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects were searched in various databases such as PubMed, Web of Sciences (ISI), and Google Scholar until September 2022. The medicinal herbs and their main ingredients, thymol and carvacrol, showed antiviral properties and reduced inflammatory mediators, including IL-1β; IL-6, and TNF-α, at both gene and protein levels but increased the levels of IFN-γ in the serum as anti-inflammatory cytokine. These medicinal herbs and their constituents also reduce oxidative stress and enhance antioxidant capacity. The results of molecular docking analyses also indicated that polyphenol components such as thymol, carvone, and carvacrol could inhibit the entry of the viruses into the host cells in molecular docking analyses. The antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects of these plants may be due to actions of their phenolic compounds that modulate immune response and may be useful in the control and treatment of CoV-induced lung disorder.

Depression Severity among a Sample of LGBTQ+ Individuals during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Background: The global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has led to immense impacts on global community health, the public perception of healthcare, and attitudes surrounding mental health during widespread quarantine. Methods: This analysis examines the rates of depressive symptomology among a sample of LGBTQ+-identifying individuals in the United States (n = 1090). The variables examined included socio-demographic factors, the use of mental health medication, access to mental health medication, and experiences of depression symptomology. Results: The findings indicate that depressive symptoms were less severe for older adults, as they reported higher levels of minimal to moderately severe depressive symptoms. Participants who were not working and those who were using substances were less likely to report depressive symptoms. Participants who were employed full-time reported higher levels of depression compared to those who were unemployed. Conclusions: Understanding the mental health of marginalized populations such as the LGBTQ+ community is critical to providing more nuanced preventative healthcare for unique populations, as members of the LGBTQ+ community are non-monolithic and require more personalized approaches to their healthcare needs.

SARS-CoV-2 ORF3a-Mediated NF-κB Activation Is Not Dependent on TRAF-Binding Sequence.

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has caused a global pandemic of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). Excessive inflammation is a hallmark of severe COVID-19, and several proteins encoded in the SARS-CoV-2 genome are capable of stimulating inflammatory pathways. Among these, the accessory protein open reading frame 3a (ORF3a) has been implicated in COVID-19 pathology. Here we investigated the roles of ORF3a in binding to TNF receptor-associated factor (TRAF) proteins and inducing nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) activation. X-ray crystallography and a fluorescence polarization assay revealed low-affinity binding between an ORF3a N-terminal peptide and TRAFs, and a dual-luciferase assay demonstrated NF-κB activation by ORF3a. Nonetheless, mutation of the N-terminal TRAF-binding sequence PIQAS in ORF3a did not significantly diminish NF-κB activation in our assay. Our results thus suggest that the SARS-CoV-2 protein may activate NF-κB through alternative mechanisms.

Simultaneous LC–MS/MS method for the quantitation of Azithromycin, Hydroxychloroquine and its metabolites in SARS-CoV-2(−/ +) populations using dried blood spots

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) led to a global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Early in the pandemic, efforts were made to test the SARS-CoV-2 antiviral efficacy of repurposed medications that were already approved and available for other indications, including hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) and azithromycin (AZI). To reduce the risk of SARS-CoV-2 exposure for clinical-trial study participants and to conform with lockdowns and social distancing guidelines, biospecimen collection for HCQ and AZI included at-home dried blood spot (DBS) collection rather than standard venipuncture by trained clinicians. In this study, we developed and validated the first sensitive and selective simultaneous LC–MS/MS method to accurately quantitate the concentration of HCQ, HCQ metabolites (Desethylchloroquine [DCQ], Bisdesethylchloroquine [BDCQ], Monodesethylhydroxychloroquine [DHCQ]) and AZI extracted from DBS. The validated method was successfully applied for the quantification of over 2000 DBS specimens to evaluate the pharmacokinetic profile of AZI, HQC, and its metabolites. This new method has a small sample volume requirement (~ 10 µL), results in high sensitivity (1 ng/mL), and would facilitate remotely conducted therapeutic drug monitoring.

A-289 Emergence of Unusual Non-Fermentative Gram-Negative Bacilli Associated to COVID-19 Period at Brazilian Hospitals

Abstract Background Since the global pandemic of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), some studies have reported on the emergence of opportunistic nosocomial pathogens associated with co-infection on the outcome of COVID-19 patients. The aim of this study was to describe the increase of six unusual species of Non-fermentative Gram-negative bacilli (NF-GNB) clinical isolates recovered from inpatients in several Brazilian hospitals comparing pre-Covid-19 (January 2018 to December 2019) period vs Covid-19 (January 2020 to December 2021) period. Methods This study design was a retrospective, observational analysis based on microbiological data of emergent NF-GNB isolates, detected in several Brazilian tertiary hospitals. The bacterial identification was performed by Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF/MS) and the susceptibility of antibiotics was determined using disk diffusion method. Results During the 48 months period, a total of 1665 (2018; 349), (2019; 351), (2020; 485), (2021; 480) emergent NF-GNB isolated from blood (n = 744), respiratory tract (n = 239), skin and soft tissue (n = 264); urine (n = 119), catheter (n = 101), fluid and secretions (n = 113), Cerebrospinal fluid (n = 12) and others (n = 73) were analyzed. The frequency of NF-BGN according to species level identification was Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (1040; 62.5%), Burkholderia cepacea complex (457; 27.4%), Elizabethkingia meningoseptica (64; 3.8%), Elizabethkingia miricola (31; 1.8%), Ochrobactrum anthropi (69; 4.1%) and Ochrobactrum intermedium (4; 0.2%). The prevalence of these NF-BGN detected in pre-Covid-19 period (2018–2019) and Covid-19 period (2020–2021) were 42% and 58%, respectively. The incidence of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, Burkholderia cepacea complex, Elizabethkingia spp. and Ochrobactrum spp. infection was (47.7% and 52.3%), (42.9% and 57.1%), (43.2% and 56.8%) and (50.7% and 49.3%) among female and man patients, respectively. For Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, Burkholderia cepacea complex and Ochrobactrum spp. the main age range was over 60 years (44.5%, 44.9% and 42.5%) while for Elizabethkingia spp. the main age range was 0–10 years of age with 42.5% of cases in the pre-COVID-19 period and over 60 years old with 43.9% in the COVID-19 period. Compared the two periods (2018–2019 vs 2020–2021) for Stenotrophomonas maltophilia the resistance rate to levofloxacin and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim was (3.9% vs 4.6%) and (4% vs 4.2%), respectively. Conclusion Our data point to a scenario wherein the presence of opportunistic pathogens may have been intensified by the covid-19 pandemic. Further studies should be carried out to clarify these findings.

Prevalence of COVID-19 in End Stage Renal Disease Patients on Hemodialysis & Dialysis Providers During SARs-Cov-19 spike in Pakistan.

The global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) poses a significant threat to both hemodialysis staff and patients. However, the prevalence of COVID-19 among asymptomatic end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients on chronic hemodialysis (MHD) and healthcare staff including nurses and technicians in dialysis unit remains uncertain. Given that hemodialysis patients and dialysis nurses are particularly prone in congregate settings, this research aimed to examine the prevalence of COVID-19 in two hemodialysis units at Jinnah Hospital, Lahore, Pakistan. This cross-sectional study involved the participation of 198 maintenance hemodialysis patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and 83 dialysis staff members. These patients or staff members did not have any symptoms at the time of testing. Testing was conducted using qualitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) on nasal & pharyngeal swabs collected from June 18th to June 23rd, 2020. 
 Out of the total participants, 45 out of 198 dialysis patients (22.7%) and 10 out of 83 dialysis staff members (12%) were found to be positive for COVID-19. The overall prevalence of COVID-19, combining patients and staff, was 19.5% (55 out of 281). The mortality rate among the infected patients was 6.6% (3 out of 45). To conclude, the findings of this study demonstrate a significant prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 among hemodialysis staff and patients in Lahore, Pakistan.

The Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Weight Loss, Eating Behaviour and Quality of Life after Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass.

Background and Objectives: The global pandemic of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), declared on 11 March 2020, had an extensive impact on bariatric patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate short-term weight loss outcomes, changes in eating behaviour, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among patients who had Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and Methods: This cohort study included 72 patients (Group S) who underwent RYGB surgery in the Surgery Department of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences during the COVID-19 pandemic in the years 2020-2022. Data for the control group (Group C) of 87 patients (operated on in 2010-2012) were collected from a prospective study. The data referred to the period before and a year after the RYGB. The information about patients' weight changes, hunger, satiety, fullness sensations, appetite, diet, and eating patterns was queried. Eating behaviour and HRQoL evaluation were conducted by the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ-R18) and the medical outcomes study Short-Form-36 (SF-36), respectively. Results: One year after the surgery, % excess body mass index loss (%EBMIL) was 77.88 (26.33) in Group S, 76.21 (19.98) in Group C, p = 0.663. Patients in Group S tended more to choose snacks between main meals: 79.2% versus 28.7%, p < 0.0001. Cognitive restraint significantly increased in Group S from 45.93 (13.37) up to 54.48 (13.76), p = 0.001; additionally, significantly worse overall health status was found in Group S compared to Group C, 53.27 (24.61) versus 70.11 (31.63), p < 0.0001. Mental HRQoL (50.76 versus 60.52 score, p < 0.0001) and social functioning (44.79 versus 57.90, p < 0.0001) were worse in Group S. Conclusions: In this study, the COVID-19 pandemic had no impact on short-term weight loss after RYGB. However, one year after, RYGB patients tended to snack more, and mental HRQoL and social functioning were worse in the study group.

Social responsibility and tax evasion: organised hypocrisy of Tunisian professionals

PurposeThe present work aimed to present the perception of Tunisian professionals towards companies engaged in social responsibility practices and describe the tax evasion strategies of socially responsible Tunisian companies following the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic (COVID-19) shock.Design/methodology/approachA survey was sent to 119 Tunisian tax administration auditors. Data analysis methods principal component analysis (PCA) and regression analysis were used. The data were collected through a questionnaire after the general containment of Tunisia from September 2020 to February 2021. These quantitative data were analysed using processing software (STATA).FindingsProfessionals of the tax authorities, particularly those in charge of the audit mission, aim for corporate profitability from the perspective of stakeholders that seek to integrate ethics and social responsibility into companies and consider employee morale a top priority. The results show that highly ethical and socially responsible professionals are far from practising aggressive strategies. Thus, an auditor from the tax administration is far from engaging in social responsibility to justify fraudulent acts. During the COVID-19 period, the role of these professionals was to prevent and detect fraud in the tax sector to fight corruption and investigate taxes based on sound regulations.Research limitations/implicationsThe results are consistent with optimal taxation theory, which postulates that a tax system should be chosen to maximise a social welfare function subject to a set of constraints. Professionals seek to make taxation much simpler for taxpayers by providing advice and consultation to manage tax obligations. The minimisation of tax or the play of tax values requires expertise in the field to respect legal constraints. Therefore, these professionals play a crucial role in tax collection, as the professionals' advice and suggestions can influence taxpayers' decision-making.Practical implicationsIn recent years, academic researchers, policy makers and the public have become increasingly interested in corporate tax evasion behaviour. At the same time, companies are under increasing pressure to integrate CSR into the companies' decision-making processes, which has led to increased academic interest in CSR. Opportunistic tax minimisation reduces state resources and funds needed for government programmes to improve the social welfare of the entire community. This study represents an overriding concern not only for legal and tax authorities and companies, but also for shareholders and stakeholders.Originality/valueThe authors' study contributes to the existing literature by determining the state of play on corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices amongst Tunisian tax authorities' professionals. In Tunisia, an executive of the tax authorities in charge of the verification mission is required to verify the proper application of the accounting and tax legislation in force, follow up on tax control operations on declared taxes and validate the sincerity of the accounts. This study focussed on the tax evasion of companies engaged in social responsibility practices according to the judgements of Tunisian tax authorities' auditors during the global COVID-19 pandemic.

PERFORMANCE OF RAPID ANTIGEN TEST IN COMPARISON TO REAL-TIME RT-PCR IN DIAGNOSIS OF COVID-19 INFECTION: A SHORT STUDY

Objective: The global pandemic of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is still spreading. Because of this, it is urgently necessary to develop quick, easy, and accurate assays to identify severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. For the purpose of diagnosing COVID-19 cases, the quick SARS-CoV-2 antigen detection test’s performance attributes should be assessed and contrasted with the gold standard real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay. Methods: A retrospective analysis was done during January to May, 2022 at IPGME&amp;R and SSKM Hospital, Kolkata, India. 2842 paired samples were taken from all patients reporting to the hospital for Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) and RT-PCR. The sensitivity and specificity were calculated to evaluate the performance of the RAT. Results: Of 2842 samples, 229 (8%) were positive, and 2613 (92%) were negative for SARS-CoV-2 RNA by real-time RT-PCR assay. The rapid SARS-CoV-2 antigen detection test’s sensitivity and specificity were 77.29% (177 out of 229) and 99.54% (2601 out of 2613), respectively. Positive predictive value was 93.65% and negative predictive value was 93% with the Ct value ≤35 of real-time RT-PCR result. Conclusion: RAT-positive samples are also positive by real-time RT-PCR test though RAT-negative patient with symptom, should further test for real-time RT-PCR as sensitivity is bit low particularly in symptomatic patient respect to real-time RT-PCR result. Hence, we can conclude that specificity- and sensitivity-wise real-time RT-PCR method is best, but during pandemic/outbreak situation, RAT is good alternative for fast screening and point-of-care test of COVID-19 detection.

Enlightening from optimizing post-authorization safety monitoring system of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines in major economies worldwide

Ongoing global pandemic of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has promoted the unprecedented rapid development and large-scale rolling out of different platform-based COVID-19 vaccines worldwide. How to effectively respond to the expected scale increasing adverse events after vaccination campaign of COVID-19 vaccines is a common problem faced by the world. A lot of countries and regions around the world have arranged in advance at different levels, optimizing the original vaccine safety monitoring system from the perspectives of strengthening the foundation and capabilities, promoting internal and external cooperation, upgrading methods, as well as improving transparency and public communication, which has ensured the good and efficient operation of the system and can provide reference for the construction of relevant fields in China.

Adult-Onset Still’s Disease after COVID-19 Vaccination: A Case Report and Review

To overcome the global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), COVID-19 vaccination has been developed and distributed. Many people have received the vaccination worldwide. However, there are some vaccinated individuals who complain of side effects due to COVID-19 vaccination. We report the case of a patient who developed adult-onset Still’s disease (AOSD) after receiving the messenger RNA COVID-19 vaccine. A 21-year-old male patient without a previous medical history developed a fever on the day of the first dose of the vaccine. He had persistent fever, arthralgia of the knee and wrist, hyperferritinemia, transient skin rash, and negative test results for rheumatoid factor or antinuclear antibody. Positron emission tomography-computed tomography scan showed lymphadenopathies with reactive patterns and no malignancy. His symptoms and laboratory abnormalities gradually improved with glucocorticoid, cyclosporine, methotrexate, and tocilizumab treatment. Although its causality is still not confirmed, AOSD should be considered in a case that meets the diagnostic criteria after COVID-19 vaccination.

Newly-onset Autoimmune Diabetes Mellitus Triggered by COVID 19 Infection: A Case-based Review.

The clinical picture of the infection has extreme variability: it goes from asymptomatic patients or mild forms with fever, cough, fatigue and loss of smell and taste to severe cases ending up in the intensive care unit (ICU). This is due to a possible cytokine storm that may lead to multiorgan failure, septic shock, or thrombosis. Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV -2), which is the virus that causes COVID 19, binds to angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptors, which are expressed in key metabolic organs and tissues, including pancreatic beta cells, adipose tissue, the small intestine and the kidneys. Therefore it is possible to state that newly-onset diabetes is triggered by COVID 19 infection. Although many hypotheses have clarified the potential diabetogenic effect of COVID 19, a few observations were reported during this pandemic. Two male patients admitted to us with devastating hyperglycemia symptoms were diagnosed with type 1/autoimmune diabetes mellitus within 3 months following COVID 19 infection. Autoantibodies and decreased C peptide levels were detected in these patients. We speculated that several mechanisms might trigger autoimmune insulitis and pancreatic beta-cell destruction by COVID 19 infection. We aim to raise awareness of the possible link between SARS-CoV-2 and newly onset type 1 diabetes mellitus. Further studies are needed to determine a more definitive link between the two clinical entities.

Coronavirus Classification based on Enhanced X-ray Images and Deep Learning

In light of the fact that the global pandemic of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is still having a significant impact on the health of people all over the world, there is a growing need for testing diagnosis and treatment that can be completed quickly. The primary imaging modalities used in the respiratory disease diagnostic process are the Chest X-ray (CXR) and the computed tomography scan. In this context, this paper aims to design a new Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to diagnose COVID-19 in patients based on CXR images and determine whether they are COVID or healthy. We have tested the performance of our CNN on the COVID-19 Radiography Database with three classes (COVID, Pneumonia, and Normal). Also, we proposed a new enhancement technique to enhance the CXR image using the Laplacian kernel with Delta Function and Contrast-Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization. The proposed CNN has been trained and tested on 15153 enhanced and original images, COVID (3616), Pneumonia (1345), and Normal (10192). Our enhancement technique increased the performance metrics scores of the proposed CNN. Hence, the proposed method obtained better results than the state-of-the-art methods in accuracy, sensitivity, precision, specificity, and F measure.

Depthwise convolution based pyramid ResNet model for accurate detection of COVID-19 from chest X-Ray images

ABSTRACT The global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) causes severe respiratory problems in humans. The Chest X-ray (CXR) imaging technique majorly assists in detecting abnormalities in the chest and lung areas caused by COVID-19. Hence, developing an automatic system for CXR-based COVID-19 detection is vital for disease diagnosis. To accomplish this requirement, an enhanced Residual Network (ResNet) model is proposed in this paper for accurate COVID-19 detection. The proposed model combines the Depthwise Separable Convolutional ResNet and Pyramid dilated module(DSC-ResNet-PDM) for deep feature extraction. Employing the DSC layer minimizes the number of parameters to mitigate the overfitting issue. Further, the pyramid dilated module is used for extracting multi-scale features. The extracted features are finally fed into the optimized Medium Gaussian kernel Support Vector Machine classifier (MGKSVM) for COVID-19 detection. The proposed model attained an accuracy of 99.5%, which is comparatively higher than the standard ResNet50 and ResNet101 models.
