Systematic investigation of nucleon optical model potentials in (p, d) transfer reactions

Abstract The consistent three-body model reaction methodology(TBMRM) proposed by J. Lee et al.[1–3], which includes adopting the simple zero-range adiabatic wave approximation, constraining the single-particle potentials using modern Hartree–Fock calculations, and using global nucleon optical model potential(OMP) geometries, are widely applied in systematic studies of transfer reactions. In this work, we study the influences of different nucleon OMPs on extraction of spectroscopic factors(SFs) from (p, d) reactions. Our study covers 32 sets of angular distribution data of (p, d) reactions on 4 targets, as well as a large range of incident energies(20-200 MeV/nucleon). Two semi-microscopic nucleon OMPs, JLM[4, 5] and CTOM[6], and a pure microscopic nucleon potential WLH[7] are used in the present work. The results are compared with those using the phenomenological global optical potential KD02[8]. We find the incident energy dependence of spectroscopic factors extracted from (p, d) reactions is obviously suppressed when microscopic OMPs are employed for 12C, 28Si and 40Ca. In addition, spectroscopic factors extracted using the systematic microscopic optical potential CTOM based on the Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory are more in line with the results obtained from (e, e'p) measurements, except 16O and 40Ca at high energies(> 100 MeV), calling for an exact treatment of double-magic nuclei. The results obtained by using pure microscopic optical potential WLH based on EFT theory shows the same trend but generally higher than CTOM. JLM potential, which relies on simplified nuclear matter calculations with old-fashioned bare interactions, produces very similar results with phenomenological potential KD02. Our results indicate that modern microscopic OMPs are reliable tools for probing the nuclear structure by transfer reactions across a wide energy range.

Investigation of reaction and α production cross sections with 9Be projectile

In order to investigate the contribution of α production in the reaction cross sections, measurements of elastic scattering and inclusive α particle angular distributions have been carried out with the 9Be projectile on 89Y, 124Sn, 159Tb, 198Pt, and 209Bi targets over a wide angular range at energies near the Coulomb barrier. The measured elastic scattering angular distributions were fitted with optical model calculations, and reaction cross sections were extracted. The same data were also analyzed using both global optical model potentials (Global OMP) and microscopic São Paulo potentials (SPP), to obtain the reaction cross sections. The data available in the literature for 9Be projectile includes the elastic scattering angular distributions, α production cross sections, and complete fusion cross sections on these and other targets at several energies are also utilized for comparative studies. The reaction cross section extracted from the three potentials (Best Fit, Global OMP and SPP) are in reasonable agreement for all the targets except for the energies below the barrier where the results from SPP deviate by 30-50%. Inclusive α particle production cross sections were also extracted by integrating the α particle angular distributions. The present data and data available from literature of reaction and α-particle production cross sections were utilized to make systematic studies. Systematics of reaction and α-particle production cross sections revealed their universal behavior. The ratio of complete fusion (CF), inclusive α cross sections, and their sum (CF+α) to reaction cross sections show that at sub-barrier energies inclusive α dominates and above barrier CF dominates, and cumulative of these two processes almost explains the reaction cross section at all energies over a wide range of target mass. A comparative study of α production with other weakly bound projectiles is also performed and a clear distinction between projectile types is observed, which is found to correlate well with α separation energies of the projectiles.

Isotopic dependence of (n,α) reaction cross sections for Fe and Sn nuclei

The (n,α) reactions play an important role for the energy generation and the synthesis of chemical elements in the stars, as well as for nuclear engineering and medical applications. The aim of this study is to explore the evolution of (n,α) reactions in Fe and Sn isotope chains in order to assess the cross section properties with the increase of neutron number in target nucleus, and to make a comparison with other relevant neutron induced reactions. The cross section calculations are based on the statistical Hauser-Feshbach and exciton models in TALYS nuclear reaction code, using global optical model potential that is additionally adjusted by the (n,α) cross section data for 54Fe and 118Sn. The calculations of (n,α) reactions in Fe and Sn isotopes provide the insight into their isotopic dependence and properties over the complete relevant range of neutron energies. The cross sections result in pronounced maxima at lower-mass isotopes, and rather strong decrease for neutron-rich nuclei consistent with the reduction of the reaction Q-value and increased contributions from other exit channels from compound nucleus. The analysis of the Maxwellian averaged cross sections at temperatures in stellar environment shows that the (n,α) reactions have significant contributions for low-mass Fe isotopes, that is opposite than for Sn isotopes. For both neutron rich isotopes γ and neutron emissions dominate, with their interplay depending on the temperature involved.

In the T-matrix form of the transfer reaction, the optical model potentials (OMPs) are used to compute the scattering wave function and transition operator. For most cases, the elastic scattering cross sections, normally used to generate the OMPs, are not directly given in the same experiment. Then, the global OMPs, which fit the experimental data over a broad mass and energy range, are widely used in the theoretical calculations. Different sets of global OMPs with different parameter sets can reproduce the scattering cross section equally well within the uncertainty. Here, we apply different global OMPs to calculate the (differential) cross sections of transfer reactions on the target nuclei , , , and at different energies. The results demonstrate that the effects of deuteron and nucleon global OMPs on transfer (differential) cross sections vary with energy and target mass. Furthermore, the influences of the spin-orbit coupling term of deuteron and nucleon global OMPs on the transfer cross sections are not negligible.

Uncertainty-quantified phenomenological optical potentials for single-nucleon scattering

Optical-model potentials (OMPs) continue to play a key role in nuclear reaction calculations. However, the uncertainty of phenomenological OMPs in widespread use---inherent to any parametric model trained on data---has not been fully characterized, and its impact on downstream users of OMPs remains unclear. Here we assign well-calibrated uncertainties for two representative global OMPs, those of Koning-Delaroche and Chapel Hill '89, using Markov-chain Monte Carlo for parameter inference. By comparing the canonical versions of these OMPs against the experimental data originally used to constrain them, we show how a lack of outlier rejection and a systematic underestimation of experimental uncertainties contributes to bias of, and overconfidence in, best-fit parameter values. Our updated, uncertainty-quantified versions of these OMPs address these issues and yield complete covariance information for potential parameters. Scattering predictions generated from our ensembles show improved performance both against the original training corpora of experimental data and against a new ``test'' corpus comprising many of the experimental single-nucleon scattering data collected over the last twenty years. Finally, we apply our uncertainty-quantified OMPs to two case studies of application-relevant cross sections. We conclude that, for many common applications of OMPs, including OMP uncertainty should become standard practice. To facilitate their immediate use, digital versions of our updated OMPs and related tools for forward uncertainty propagation are included as Supplemental Material.

Global phenomenological optical model potential for 14N-nucleus elastic scattering

In this paper, a set of global optical model potential parameters of [Formula: see text]N is obtained by fitting the experimental data of the elastic scattering angular distributions for the targets from [Formula: see text]Mg to [Formula: see text]Pb below 200 MeV. The global optical model potential parameters of [Formula: see text]N-nucleus reactions obtained are analyzed and used to describe the experimental data. It is found that the present form of the global optical model potential could reproduce the experimental data. Moreover, the elastic scattering angular distributions for the reactions of [Formula: see text]N inducing on some lighter targets and the elastic scattering observable quantity for the reactions involving [Formula: see text]N projectile are predicted using the obtained global optical model potential, and a reasonable description of the experimental data is obtained by comparing with the existing corresponding experimental data.

Reaction channel contributions to proton scattering at 65 MeV

Background: Well-established coupled channel (CC) and coupled reaction channel (CRC) processes make contributions to elastic scattering that are absent from local density folding models.Purpose: To establish and characterize the contribution to the proton optical model potential (OMP) made by the coupling to neutron pickup channels, in particular the proton OMP for 65 MeV protons on $^{48}\mathrm{Ca}$ and $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$. Also to relate this contribution to results for ${}^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$ at lower energies; to investigate the dynamical nonlocality of this contribution; to characterize the effect on the OMP of breakup of the deuteron.Methods: CRC calculations of neutron pickup and CC calculations of collective states, provide the elastic channel $S$ matrix ${S}_{lj}$. Inversion of ${S}_{lj}$ produces a local potential that yields, in a single channel calculation, the elastic scattering observables from the CC/CRC calculation. Subtracting the bare potential yields a local and $l$-independent representation of the dynamical polarization potential, DPP. From the DPPs due to a selection of channel couplings the influence of dynamically generated nonlocality can be identified. The effect of coupling to the deuteron breakup continuum is also identified.Results: For $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$, coupling to pickup channels has an effect on observables somewhat weaker than that at 30 MeV, and much less than for pickup coupling for $^{48}\mathrm{Ca}$. The DPPs have similar general properties in each case, but are much larger in magnitude for $^{48}\mathrm{Ca}$. Subsequent breakup of the deuteron makes a large contribution to the DPP, and hence to the OMP. The formal DPPs due to pickup coupling exhibit dynamical nonlocality.Conclusions: The DPPs challenge local density folding models for elastic scattering. The breakup of the deuteron must henceforth be included in calculations of the DPP due to neutron pickup in proton scattering. Pickup coupling effects are still substantial at 65 MeV. No smoothly varying global OMP could fit proton elastic scattering from both ${}^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$ and ${}^{48}\mathrm{Ca}$.

The elastic-scattering angular distributions and total reaction cross sections of projectiles were predicted using the obtained and global optical model potentials, respectively. The predictions were analyzed in detail by comparison with the available experimental data. The results indicate that the and global optical model potentials provide a satisfactory description of the elastic scattering data for the reactions induced by the . For the neutron-rich carbon isotope , the elastic scattering can be well described by changing the real part radius parameter of the global optical model potential. Possible physical explanations for the observed differences are further discussed.

Cross section measurements of proton capture reactions on Sr isotopes for astrophysics applications

Background: Abundance calculations of a certain class of proton-rich isotopes, known as $p$ nuclei, require knowledge of the cross sections of thousands of nuclear reactions entering a reaction network. As a result, the solution of the latter relies on the predictions of the Hauser-Feshbach (HF) theory and, hence, on the reliability of the models describing the nuclear parameters entering the HF calculations, notably the optical model potential (OMP), the nuclear level density (NLD) and the $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray strength function ($\ensuremath{\gamma}\mathrm{SF}$).Purpose: The present work reports on a systematic study of proton capture reactions on Sr isotopes at energies relevant to the $p$ process which is responsible for the production of the $p$ nuclei at explosive stellar sites. The purpose of the work reported here is to perform a validity test of the different OMP, NLD, and $\ensuremath{\gamma}\mathrm{SF}$ models through extensive and detailed comparisons between HF calculations and experimental cross section data. This test is necessary to understand the origin of discrepancies between the $p$-nuclei abundances observed in the solar system and those predicted by the different astrophysical models, known as $p$-process models, aiming at describing the nucleosynthesis of the $p$ isotopes.Method: Cross sections were determined from $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-angular distribution measurements and from angle-integrated $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ spectra taken with the $4\ensuremath{\pi}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$-summing technique. Cross-section data and the resulting astrophysical $S$ factors were compared with Hauser-Feshbach calculations obtained with the latest version 1.95 of the nuclear reaction code talys using combinations of global semi-microscopic and phenomenological models of optical potentials (OMPs), nuclear level densities (NLDs), and $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray strength functions ($\ensuremath{\gamma}\mathrm{SFs}$).Results: Total cross sections as well as cross sections to the ground and metastable states were determined for the reactions $^{86}\mathrm{Sr}(p,\ensuremath{\gamma})^{87}\mathrm{Y}$, $^{87}\mathrm{Sr}(p,\ensuremath{\gamma})^{88}\mathrm{Y}$, and $^{88}\mathrm{Sr}(p,\ensuremath{\gamma})^{89}\mathrm{Y}$ at incident proton-beam energies from 2.5 to 3.6, 2 to 5, and 1.5 to 5 MeV, respectively.Conclusions: The experimental data reported in the present work are in very good agreement with the talys 1.95 calculations obtained with the default combination of OMP, NLD, and $\ensuremath{\gamma}\mathrm{SF}$ models. This combination is based on purely phenomenological models. A semimicroscopic proton-nucleus optical model potential was optimized at low energies leading to an equally good agreement between experimental data and theoretical calculations based solely on combinations of fully semimicroscopic models of OMP, NLD, and $\ensuremath{\gamma}\mathrm{SF}$. Our results highlight the need for a continued effort on the systematic study of proton-capture reactions to reduce the range of uncertainties arising from global nuclear models for as wide a range of relevant nuclei as possible. In this regard, new ($p,\ensuremath{\gamma}$) data at the lowest possible energies below the opening of the neutron channel are of key importance to improve global proton-nucleus optical model potentials.

Sensitivity of analyzing power to distorting potentials in the quasifree reaction Ca40(p,pα)Ar36 at 100 MeV incident energy: Comparison with Be9 and C12 targets

Background: The ($p,p\ensuremath{\alpha}$) knockout reaction is useful for the study of preformed $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ clusters in atomic nuclei. At quasifree kinematic conditions above an incident energy of about 100 MeV the cross section and analyzing-power angular distributions extracted from the ($p,p\ensuremath{\alpha}$) knockout reaction are anticipated to resemble its free two-body counterparts. Several ($p,p\ensuremath{\alpha}$) knockout studies in the incident-energy range of 100--150 MeV on targets up to $^{12}\mathrm{C}$ confirm the predicted equivalence. However, the only experiment on $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}(p,p\ensuremath{\alpha})^{36}\mathrm{Ar}$ appears to fail the expectation spectacularly.Purpose: The reason for the drastic discrepancy between the experimental analyzing-power angular distribution for $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}(p,p\ensuremath{\alpha})^{36}\mathrm{Ar}$ and the trend of free elastic scattering of protons from $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ is investigated.Method: Guidance in general from the distorted-wave impulse approximation (DWIA) theory is employed. Specific focused theoretical calculations are performed.Results: As expected, for the ($p,p\ensuremath{\alpha}$) reaction on several light target masses up to $^{12}\mathrm{C}$, comparable cross section and analyzing-power angular distributions resemble free $^{4}\mathrm{He}(p,p)^{4}\mathrm{He}$ elastic scattering to a remarkable extent. The DWIA treatment for the $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}(p,p\ensuremath{\alpha})^{36}\mathrm{Ar}$ reaction, however, needs a more careful selection of the distortion optical-model parameters in the $\ensuremath{\alpha}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{Ar}$ outgoing channel. Global optical-model potentials used in the published work reproduce neither analyzing-power distribution of the $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}(p,p\ensuremath{\alpha})^{36}\mathrm{Ar}$ reaction, nor $\ensuremath{\alpha}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{36}\mathrm{Ar}$ elastic scattering cross-section angular distributions. Use of appropriate optical potentials resolves the problem.Conclusions: The use of appropriate optical-model potentials which describe elastic scattering of $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ particles from $^{36}\mathrm{Ar}$ correctly appears to be crucial. The problem reported previously in the literature is resolved to a remarkable extent. There is a need to explore the two-body aspects of the quasifree ($p,p\ensuremath{\alpha}$) reaction for heavier targets further.

We construct a new global optical model potential to describe the elastic scattering of 12C. The experimental data of elastic-scattering angular distributions and total reaction cross sections for targets from 24Mg to 209Bi are considered below 200 MeV within the framework of the optical model. The results calculated using the derived global optical potential are then compared with the existing experimental data. The reliability of the global optical potential is further tested by predicting the elastic scattering data out of the mass and energy ranges, within which the global potential parameters are determined, and reasonable results are also obtained.

Nuclear effects in proton transport and dose calculations

Interactions of protons with nuclei are modeled in a form that is suitable for Monte Carlo simulation of proton transport. The differential cross section (DCS) for elastic collisions of protons with neutral atoms is expressed as the product of the Rutherford DCS, which describes scattering by a bare point nucleus, and two correction factors that account for the screening of the nuclear charge by the atomic electrons and for the effect of the structure of the nucleus. The screening correction is obtained by considering the scattering of the projectile by an atom with a point nucleus and the atomic electron cloud described by a parameterization of the Dirac-Hartree-Fock-Slater self-consistent electron density. The DCS for scattering by this point nucleus atom is calculated by means of the eikonal approximation. The nuclear correction to the DCS for elastic collisions is calculated by conventional partial-wave analysis with a global optical-model potential that describes the interaction with the bare nucleus. Inelastic interactions of the projectile with target nuclei are described by using information from data files in ENDF-6 format, which provide cross sections, multiplicities, and angle-energy distributions of all reaction products: light ejectiles (neutrons, protons, …), gammas, as well as recoiling heavy residuals. These interaction models and data have been used in the Monte Carlo transport code penh, an extension of the electron-gamma code penelope, which originally accounted for electromagnetic interactions only. The combined code system penh/penelope performs simulations of coupled electron-photon-proton transport. A few examples of simulation results are presented to reveal the influence of nuclear interactions on proton transport processes and on the calculation of dose distributions from proton beams.

Microscopic optical potential for 7Li

A microscopic optical potential (MOP) for 7Li without free parameter is obtained by folding the MOPs of its internal nucleons with their density distributions. An isospin-dependent nucleon MOP based on the Skyrme nucleon–nucleon effective interaction is used as the nucleon optical potential. Cluster model is employed to construct the internal wave function of 7Li and derive the density distributions of the internal nucleons. The 7Li MOP is used to calculate the elastic-scattering angular distributions and reaction cross sections for target nuclei from 27Al to 208Pb at incident energies up to 450 MeV. The results are compared with experimental data and the calculated results by a global phenomenological optical model potential. Generally the MOP can reproduce the experimental data reasonably well, and in many cases it is comparable to the global phenomenological optical potential.

We achieved a set of 9Be global phenomenological optical model potentials by fitting a large experimental dataset of the elastic scattering observable for target mass numbers from 24 to 209. The obtained 9Be global optical model potential was applied to predict elastic-scattering angular distributions and total reaction cross-sections of 8,10,11B projectiles. The predictions are made by performing a detailed analysis comparing with the available experimental data. Furthermore, these elastic scattering observables are also predicted for some lighter targets outside of the given mass number range, and reasonable results are obtained. Possible physical explanations for the observed differences are also discussed.

Measurement of Ni58(p,p)Ni58 elastic scattering at low momentum transfer by using the HIRFL-CSR heavy-ion storage ring

The very first in-ring reaction experiment at the Cooler Storage Ring at the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL-CSR), namely proton elastic scattering on stable $^{58}\mathrm{Ni}$ nuclei, is presented. The circulating $^{58}\mathrm{Ni}^{19+}$ ions with an energy of 95 MeV/u were interacting repeatedly with an internal hydrogen gas target in the experimental storage ring (CSRe). Low-energy proton recoils from the elastic collisions were measured with an ultra-high vacuum compatible silicon-strip detector. Deduced differential cross sections were normalized by measuring $k$-shell x rays from $^{58}\mathrm{Ni}^{19+}$ projectiles due to the $^{58}\mathrm{Ni}^{19+}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{H}}_{2}$ ionization collisions. Compared to the experimental cross sections, a good agreement has been achieved with the theoretical predictions in the measured region, which were obtained by using the global phenomenological optical model potentials. Our results enable new research opportunities for optical model potential studies on exotic nuclides by using the in-ring reaction setup at the HIRFL-CSR facility.

Global optical model potential for the weakly bound projectile Be9

The global optical model potential for the $^{9}\mathrm{Be}$ projectile is developed by systematically studying the experimental data of elastic-scattering angular distributions and reaction cross sections from $^{24}\mathrm{Mg}$ to $^{209}\mathrm{Bi}$ below 100 MeV. The analysis is performed in terms of comparing the theoretical results with the available experimental data. A satisfactory agreement is observed in the whole energy and target mass regions. Moreover, the elastic-scattering angular distributions and reaction cross sections of $^{9}\mathrm{Be}$ on some lighter targets are also predicted using the global optical model potential and a reasonable description of the experimental data is obtained.

Global phenomenological optical model potentials for 8,10,11B projectiles

Based on the obtained [Formula: see text] global optical model potential, the global phenomenological optical model potential for [Formula: see text] projectile is obtained by fitting the experimental data of [Formula: see text] elastic scattering angular distributions from [Formula: see text] to [Formula: see text] targets with incident energies below 100[Formula: see text]MeV. Using the found global optical model potential, the reaction cross-sections are predicted and compared with the available experimental data. Moreover, the elastic-scattering angular distributions and reaction cross-sections for isotopic chain [Formula: see text] projectiles are predicted by the [Formula: see text] global optical model potential at different incident energies. These results are also compared with the corresponding experimental data. The performance shows that the [Formula: see text] global phenomenological optical model potentials can give a satisfactory description for elastic scattering of these projectiles.

Li6 global phenomenological optical model potential

A systematic global phenomenological optical model potential for a $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ projectile is established by studying the experimental data of elastic-scattering angular distributions and reaction cross sections from $^{24}\mathrm{Mg}$ to $^{209}\mathrm{Bi}$ below 250 MeV. Based on the obtained $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ global phenomenological optical model potential, the extensive analysis of $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ elastic scattering is performed for different targets by comparing with the corresponding experimental data. It is found that the results calculated using the global optical model potential are consistent with a large body of elastic-scattering data for the reactions involving $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ incidence. Application of the global potential is performed to predict the elastic-scattering angular distributions and reaction cross sections for those targets outside of the mass range. The reasonable results are also obtained.

Global phenomenological optical model potential for the Li7 projectile nucleus

A new global phenomenological optical model potential for the $^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ projectile is derived from the available experimental data of elastic-scattering angular distributions and reaction cross sections from $^{27}\mathrm{Al}$ to $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ with incident energies below 200 MeV. It is based on a smooth, unique functional form for the energy dependence of the potential depths, and physically constrained geometry parameters. The elastic-scattering angular distributions and reaction cross sections for other targets are also predicted by the obtained $^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ global phenomenological optical model potential at different incident energies. These results are further compared with the corresponding experimental data. The performance shows that the $^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ global phenomenological optical model potential can give a satisfactory description for $^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ elastic scattering.
