Signal design and performance analysis for LEO high dynamic navigation application

Abstract With the development of GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System), LEO (Low Earth Orbit) systems are adopted to enhance the system performance of GNSS. The signal Doppler of the LEO satellite is seven to nine times that of GNSS signals, which benefits positioning performance but leads to high acquisition complexity. This paper proposes the combination of a CSS (Chirp Spread Spectrum) marker and the main body of traditional modulation methods for high dynamic application. The acquisition calculation complexity and mean acquisition time of the proposed signal are analysed and compared with the traditional signal. The result shows that the acquisition calculation complexity is just 26 % of the traditional signal under the parameters considered and the mean acquisition time of the proposed signal is also lower than the traditional signal. Hence, the proposed signal is able to decrease the mean acquisition time of the receiver under the constraint of calculation complexity and should be adopted for LEO high dynamic application.

Bayesian EM approach for GNSS parameters of interest estimation under constant modulus interference

Interferences pose a significant risk to applications that rely on global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs). They have the potential to degrade GNSS performance and even result in service disruptions. The most notable type of intentional interference is characterized by a constant modulus, such as chirp and tone interferences. These interferences have a straightforward structure, leading to the creation of complex circles when attempting to identify their contribution. To address the interference and improve the situation, we calculate the maximum likelihood estimator for the relevant parameters (time delay and Doppler shift) while considering the presence of these latent variables. To achieve this, we employ the expectation–maximization algorithm, which has previously demonstrated its effectiveness in similar scenarios. Experiments conducted using synthetic signals confirm the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

A comparative analysis of the performance of various GNSS positioning concepts dedicated to precision agriculture

Abstract Automated guidance systems for precision agriculture rely on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and correction services for high accuracy and precision in field operations. This study evaluates the performance of selected GNSS positioning services for precision agriculture in a field experiment. We use three correction services: SF1, SF3, and RTK, which apply varying positioning concepts, i.e., Wide Area Differential GNSS, Precise Point Positioning, and Real-Time Kinematics, respectively. The tractor is autonomously steered along multiple predefined paths located in open-sky areas as well as near the heavy tree cover. The reference route of the vehicle is determined by classical surveying. Tractor trajectories, a SF1 and SF3 corrections, are shifted from predefined straight paths, unlike in the case for RTK. Offsets of up to several decimeters are service- and area-specific, indicating an issue with the stability of the reference frame. Additionally, the varying performance of the correction services implies that environmental conditions limit the precision and accuracy of GNSS positioning in precision agriculture. The pass-to-pass analysis reveals that SF1 improves the declared accuracy, while SF3 is less reliable in obstructed areas. RTK remains a stable source for determining position. Under favorable conditions, the pass-to-pass accuracy at 95% confidence level is better than 11.5 cm, 8.5 cm, and 4.5 cm for SF1, SF3, and RTK, respectively. In the worst-case scenario, the corresponding accuracies are: 25.5 cm, 65.5 cm, and 22.5 cm.

Characterization and mitigation of urban GNSS multipath effects on smartphones

In urban environments, the code measurements of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) on smartphones can be significantly degraded by presence of multipath and non-Line-Of-Sight (NLOS) effects. Extensive studies have been carried out on characterizing the quality of GNSS code measurements under different conditions, which can be used to refine the weighting model and fault detection method. However, our knowledge regarding the impacts of multipath effects on smartphones remains limited. This includes determining the dominant error source for urban GNSS on smartphones between multipath and NLOS errors, and characterizing the fault-free code measurements for pedestrians in urban canyons. To address these issues, we conducted extensive tests in a typical urban area in Hong Kong and analyzed characteristics of multipath effects. Analysis revealed that 92.5 % of code outliers stem from NLOS signals, which result in longer ranging measurements, making NLOS the dominant error source impacting GNSS performance. Further, we established that over 92 % of fault-free signals are from the opposite sky of a pedestrian, and we found that the sidewalk can be reliably determined by examining signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) measurements, eliminating the need of complex 3D building models. The identified sidewalk can be used to enhance GNSS performance in urban areas. An experiment in the urban canyon was performed in urban canyons. Results show that the accuracy can be improved from 15 m to 4.6 m when the correct sidewalk can be identified.

Ionospheric scintillation and solar activity relation in East Malaysia during solar maximum 2014

Ionospheric scintillation is a common phenomenon in the equatorial, auroral, and polar areas, posing a threat to the Global Navigation Satellite System's (GNSS) operation. This ionospheric effect is thought to impact satellite signal propagation, hence, lowering positioning accuracy. Therefore, detecting ionospheric scintillation is critical in enhancing GNSS performance, particularly at low latitudes with severe amplitude scintillation. This paper investigates the effects of ionospheric scintillation on GPS signals at UNIMAS station, the East part of Malaysia. This study aims to identify the occurrence of ionospheric scintillation by calculating the index of scintillation strength during solar maximum 2014. The amplitude scintillation, which is measured in the S4 index is obtained and classified accordingly from the data recorded at the UNIMAS station. The results have shown that strong scintillation (S4 ≥ 0.5) occurred in the spring (April) and autumn (September and October) seasons, reaching 8 incidents. This paper also presents the diurnal, seasonal, and solar activity dependence of ionospheric scintillation. It is evident that the occurrence of amplitude scintillation is influenced by variations in solar activity, including solar flares and sunspots, as well as diurnal and seasonal changes. These findings provide valuable insights into the behaviour of the ionosphere and its impact on space-based communication and navigation systems.

GNSS visibility and performance implications for the GENESIS mission

The GENESIS mission prepared for launch in 2027 integrates the four space-geodetic techniques on a single spaceborne platform in medium Earth orbit. With its unique observations and alternative tie concepts, the mission aims to contribute to an improved accuracy and homogeneity of future terrestrial reference system realizations. To assess the expected contribution of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) tracking, a comprehensive GNSS coverage analysis is performed based on detailed link-budget simulations, taking into account the best available gain patterns and signal-specific transmit power estimates derived for this work from measurements of a high-gain dish antenna. The benefit of different receiver antenna concepts for the GENESIS spacecraft is assessed, and it is demonstrated that a single-antenna system with either a nadir-looking or side-looking boresight is a viable alternative to the dual-antenna configuration considered in initial mission studies. Compared to terrestrial users and missions in low Earth orbit, GENESIS will collect GNSS signals transmitted at up to two times larger off-boresight angles. Only limited information on the actual transmit antenna phase patterns is presently available in this region, which hampers a quantitative assessment of the expected measurement and orbit determination accuracy. As such, a comprehensive release of manufacturer calibrations is encouraged for all blocks of GPS and Galileo satellites. In parallel, a need for in-flight characterization and calibration of the GNSS transmit antennas for off-boresight angles of up to 30^circ using observations of the GENESIS mission itself is expected. The impact of such calibrations on the overall quality of terrestrial reference frame parameters will need to be assessed in comprehensive simulations of global GNSS network solutions with joint processing of terrestrial and GENESIS GNSS observations.

GNSS performance enhancement using measurement estimation in harsh environment.

Global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs) are commonly used to measure the position and time globally. A GNSS is convenient owing to its ability to measure accurate position relatively without using assistive tools for navigation by comparing with other sensors. Based on these benefits, the applicable area is expanding to commercial and social uses (e.g., vehicle navigation, smart grids, and smartphone apps). In the future, various services and technologies (e.g., the use of autonomous vehicles, unmanned delivery, and industrial field robots), which make Internet of Things (IOT) more active, will be used in our society. Conversely, the performance of GNSS can degrade in harsh environments, such as urban areas, owing to the property of GNSS, which calculates position and time via satellite signal reception. However, buildings in a city can block navigation satellite signals and generate multi-path errors. The blocked signals exacerbate the dilution of precision (DOP), which indicates the accuracy of the navigation solution and increases the navigation solution error. This study proposes methods to improve navigation performance by leveraging various techniques (e.g., range differences, receiver clock error hold, and virtual satellites). The methods were validated in harsh environments where visible satellites were reduced. In the simulation, each proposed method improved the navigation performance by creating an environment similar to a normal situation, despite the receiver entering a harsh environment. The results confirmed that the navigation performance deteriorated compared to the normal situation where the number of visible satellites decreased. However, the navigation performance was recovered gradually by applying the proposed techniques. Using the proposed methods, navigation performance can be maintained continuously even in situations where satellite signals are blocked.

Semantic Proximity Update of GNSS/INS/VINS for Seamless Vehicular Navigation Using Smartphone Sensors

The advancement of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and the Internet of Things (IoT) have enabled a wide range of applications based on smartphones. However, the existing navigation methods using these low-cost MEMS sensors cannot provide acceptable information for location-based applications in various environments. Their technical limitations, such as severe signal attenuation, reflections, blockages, error accumulation, and low quality of images degrade the performance of GNSS, INS, and camera. To mitigate these limitations, especially in indoor vehicle navigation, we first analyze the performance of the existing fusion algorithm, then we propose Semantic Proximity Update (SPU) based on a pre-trained model of real-time object detection to enhance the integration of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), Inertial Navigation System (INS) and Visual Inertial Navigation System (VINS). SPU consists of the detection of geo-referenced objects and the relative movement to infer the absolute position. The proposed INS/GNSS/VINS/SPU can maintain long-term acceptable accuracy regardless of the indoor/outdoor environment. It only requires the use of smartphone sensors; thus, this scheme has no additional cost for users. Experimental results indicated that the errors of this scheme in horizontal positioning and three-dimensional positioning were 51.6% and 86.8% lower, respectively than those of a conventional integration.

Ionospheric Effect on Global Navigation Satellite System Performance - A Review

Satellite-based Communication, Navigation, Surveillance and Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) systems have been adopted by the international aviation community to meet the challenges of continuously rising global air traffic. Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) has been prescribed for the provision of navigation services to the air traffic. Performance of GNSS depends upon many factors including refraction and scintillation effects of ionosphere on the satellite signals. Severity of this effect depends largely upon the geographical location of the navigation receiver, the time of the day, the month of the year and the year on the 11-year solar cycle. This paper studies ionosphere mechanism and discusses its effect on the performance of GNSS. The paper also predicts the performance during solar cycle maximum expected in 2013-2014 [Jensen, Anna B.O., Mitchell, Cathryn 2011]. It touches upon the preparations going on to face the adverse effects of increased solar activity during the cycle maximum and recommends coordination/cooperation between various relevant organizations/institutions in the processes of data collection and development of a model.

Enhancing RTK Performance in Urban Environments by Tightly Integrating INS and LiDAR

High-precision and continuous positioning is a fundamental requirement for intelligent navigation applications. Nowadays, the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) real-time kinematic (RTK) technique is recognized as a feasible solution to provide precise positioning services, but its accuracy is susceptible to signal attenuation and will deteriorate drastically in urban environments. Fortunately, the low-cost inertial measurement units (IMU) and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) are available in modern vehicle systems and could be integrated to enhance GNSS performance. In this contribution, aiming to improve RTK performance in GNSS-challenging environments, we propose a tightly coupled RTK/Inertial navigation system (INS)/LiDAR integration method. The GNSS double-differenced pseudorange and carrier-phase measurements, IMU data, and LiDAR plane features are fused at the raw-data level via an extended Kalman filter (EKF). Both simulated tests and real-world experiments were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results indicate that the proposed method is able to achieve sub-decimeter-level accuracy in GNSS-challenging environments, with the improvements of (51.8%, 82.0%, 75.0%) and (53.9%, 71.0%, 41.5%) compared to state-of-the-art LIO-SAM and loosely coupled GNSS/INS/LiDAR integration. Meanwhile, the ambiguity fixing rate could be improved by more than 10% with the assistance of LiDAR plane features. Similar improvements can also be achieved in velocity and attitude estimation.

Performance indicator development addressing mitigation of the space weather impacts on GNSS

Within the European Space Agency's (ESA) Space Weather Service Network, the development of performance indicators for the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) has been identified as essential to meet the growing needs of end users for Space Weather information in the field of navigation. This requires a targeted analysis of Space Weather-related disturbances of technical systems and services in the field of satellite-based navigation, considering the growing requirements of all the different users in this domain. The goal of the Space Weather Impact on GNSS Performance: Application Development (SWIGPAD) project is to develop GNSS performance indicators (GPI) based on Space Weather data provided by European research institutes through the ESA Space Weather Service Portal (available at https://swe.ssa.esa.int) with the aim to fulfill representative use cases derived from dedicated meeting with industry and government experts. The application that serves the GPI will provide the user with information about current and expected effects of Space Weather on positioning at their respective location. Additionally, end users in the various GNSS application domains shall be assisted with an overall numerical and graphical estimate of the positioning uncertainty resulting from ionospheric conditions and its evolution over time. The intent of this article is to present the results of the project and the capabilities of the GPI application.

Estimation of tropospheric parameters with GNSS smartphones in a differential approach

With the introduction of the operating system Android 7 Nougat in the year 2016, it became possible to access Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) code and carrier phase observations. These observations can be processed with the state-of-the-art GNSS processing software packages, which allows an in-depth evaluation of the smartphone’s GNSS performance. The availability of carrier phase observations enables sub-decimeter-level positioning. A few years ago, smartphones wearing dual-frequency GNSS chipsets hit the mass market. In this study, we investigate the capability of such a device for the estimation of tropospheric delays. Static measurements carried out over the period of two weeks are performed using a Google Pixel 4 XL smartphone. The measurements are processed using relative positioning methods with a baseline length of about 33 kilometers, where a continuously operating reference station (CORS) acts as a base. The estimated differential zenith tropospheric wet delay (dZWD), obtained for the smartphone are then combined with absolute values computed at the reference station, in order to obtain time series of Zenith Total Delay (ZTD). Using this method, we demonstrate that high-precision ZTDs can be successfully determined from smartphone GNSS observations. When comparing the estimated tropospheric delays with those determined at a nearby geodetic receiver to assess the accuracy of the acquired time series of ZTD, differences in the range of few millimeters to a centimeter are visible. We examine the impact of various error sources, such as antenna phase center variations and residual effects of the ionosphere. Given that the obtained accuracies are at the level of a centimeter and below, the suggested method shows the potential to resolve small-scale tropospheric structures in near real-time, and thus, could be an interesting data source for numerical weather prediction models or related GNSS crowdsourcing projects.

Carrier Phase Residual Modeling and Fault Monitoring Using Short-Baseline Double Difference and Machine Learning

Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are used to provide accurate position, navigation, and time (PNT) information to users in various sectors of our society including transportation. Augmentation systems such as differential GNSS (DGNSS), real-time kinematics (RTK), and Precise Point Positioning (PPP) improve the GNSS performance, and providing reliable measurements from its reference station is very crucial. To ensure safe and accurate PNT solutions, code and carrier measurements must be monitored for potential faults or a performance degrade. Although there exist numerous methods to model and monitor the measurements, research on the carrier phase measurements is not as extensive as the code measurements. This paper introduces a split of residuals into receiver noise and multipath components to customize their estimation according to their respective statistical properties. This study also proposes a method to use machine learning-based non-linear regression to effectively model and monitor potential faults in the GNSS measurements including the carrier phase. A training dataset is used to model the nominal quantities of GNSS measurement residuals, and inflation factors are applied to over-bound the fault-free residuals. These inflated residuals are coupled with uncertainty factors to compute thresholds for monitoring carrier phase residuals, and the effectiveness of the thresholds is validated with a test dataset by achieving the false alarm rate of 6.61×10−6, slightly lower than the desired level of 10−5.

Research on the Positioning Performance of GNSS with a Low-Cost Choke Ring Antenna

One of the technologies used for localization is GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems), which is exposed to many phenomena, i.e., the occurrence of terrain covers, reflections of the radio waves, and the multipath nature of the radio waves in the propagation environment. To increase the resistance to environmental phenomena, special types of antennas are used, which include, among others, choke ring antennas. The article describes the design and construction of the choke ring antenna and the impact of the mentioned device on the quality of GNSS positioning. The accuracy of the constructed antenna (based on selected accuracy measures: DRMS, 2DRMS, SEP, MRSE, SAE) is calculated together with positioning errors determined for two types of antennas: choke ring antenna and the dedicated antenna supplied by the manufacturer in RTK mode. The results confirm that the designed choke ring antenna can be used for positioning without significantly losing accuracy in the RTK mode.

How Good Is a Tactical-Grade GNSS + INS (MEMS and FOG) in a 20-m Bathymetric Survey?

This paper examines how tactical-grade Inertial Navigation Systems (INS), aided by Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) modules, vary from a survey-grade system in the bathymetric mapping in depths less than 20 m. The motivation stems from the advancements in sensor developments, measurement processing algorithms, and the proliferation of autonomous and uncrewed surface vehicles often seeking to use tactical-grade systems for high-quality bathymetric products. While the performance of survey-grade GNSS + INS is well-known to the hydrographic and marine science community, the performance and limitations of the tactical-grade micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) and tactical-grade fiber-optic-gyro (FOG) INS aided with GNSS require some study to answer the following questions: (1) How close or far is the tactical-grade GNSS + INS performance from the survey-grade systems? (2) For what survey order (IHO S-44 6th ed.) can a user deploy them? (3) Can we use them for navigation chart production? We attempt to answer these questions by deploying two tactical-grade GNSS + INS units (MEMS and FOG) and a survey-grade GNSS + INS on a survey boat. All systems collected data while operating a multibeam system with the lever-arm offsets accurately determined using a total station. The tactical-grade GNSS + INSs shared one pair of antennas for heading, while the survey-grade system used an independent antenna pair. We analyze the GNSS + INS results in sequence, examine the patch-test results, and the sensor-specific SBET-integrated bathymetric surfaces as metrics for determining the tactical-grade GNSS + INSs' reliability. In addition, we evaluate the multibeam's sounding uncertainties at different beam angles. The bathymetric surfaces using the tactical-grade navigation solutions are within 15 cm of the surface generated with the survey-grade solutions.

A Positioning System in an Urban Vertical Heterogeneous Network (VHetNet)

Global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs) are essential in providing localization and navigation services to most of the world due to their superior coverage. However, due to high pathloss and inevitable atmospheric effect, the positioning performance of any standalone GNSS is still poor in urban areas. To enhance the positioning performance of legacy GNSSs in urban areas, a positioning system, which utilizes high altitude platform station (HAPS) and 5G gNodeBs (gNBs), in a futuristic urban vertical heterogeneous network (VHetNet) is proposed. In this paper, we demonstrate the effectiveness of gNBs in improving the vertical positioning performance for both the GPS-only system and the HAPS-aided GPS system by analyzing the impact of the density of gNBs and the pseudorange error of gNB on the positioning performance of the gNB augmented positioning systems. We also demonstrate the effectiveness of receiver autonomous integrity monitoring (RAIM) algorithms on the HAPS and/or gNB aided GPS systems in urban areas.

Coordinate Frames and Transformations in GNSS Ray-Tracing for Autonomous Driving in Urban Areas

3D Mapping-Aided (3DMA) Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is a widely used method to mitigate multipath errors. Various research has been presented which utilizes 3D building model data in conjunction with ray-tracing algorithms to compute and predict satellites’ visibility conditions and compute delays caused by signal reflection. To simulate, model and potentially correct multipath errors in highly dynamic applications, such as, e.g., autonomous driving, the satellite–receiver–reflector geometry has to be known precisely in a common reference frame. Three-dimensional building models are often provided by regional public or private services and the coordinate information is usually given in a coordinate system of a map projection. Inconsistencies in the coordinate frames used to express the satellite and user coordinates, as well as the reflector surfaces, lead to falsely determined multipath errors and, thus, reduce the performance of 3DMA GNSS. This paper aims to provide the needed transformation steps to consider when integrating 3D building model data, user position, and GNSS orbit information. The impact of frame inconsistencies on the computed extra path delay is quantified based on a simulation study in a local 3D building model; they can easily amount to several meters. Differences between the extra path-delay computations in a metric system and a map projection are evaluated and corrections are proposed to both variants depending on the accuracy needs and the intended use.

Innovation-Based Fault Detection and Exclusion Applied to Ultra-WideBand Augmented Urban GNSS Navigation

Due to their ability to provide a worldwide absolute outdoor positioning, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) have become a reference technology in terms of navigation technologies. Transportation-related sectors make use of this technology in order to obtain a position, velocity, and time solution for different outdoor tasks and applications. However, the performance of GNSS-based navigation is degraded when employed in urban areas in which satellite visibility is not good enough or nonexistent, as the ranging signals become obstructed or reflected by any of the numerous surrounding objects. For these situations, Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology is a perfect candidate to complement GNSS as a navigation solution, as its anchor trilateration-based radiofrequency positioning resembles GNSS’s principle. Nevertheless, this fusion is vulnerable to interferences affecting both systems, since multiple signal-degrading error sources can be found in urban environments. Moreover, an inadequate location of the augmenting UWB transmitters can introduce additional errors to the system due to its vulnerability to the multipath effect. Therefore, the misbehavior of an augmentation system could lead to unexpected and critical faults instead of improving the performance of the standalone GNSS. Accordingly, this research work presents the performance improvement caused by the application of Fault Detection and Exclusion methods when applied to a UWB-augmented low-cost GNSS system in urban environments.

Evolution of Maritime GNSS and RNSS Performance Standards

The primary means for electronic position fixing in use in contemporary maritime transport are shipborne GPS (Global Positioning System) receivers or DGPS (Differential GPS) receivers. More advanced GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) or RNSS (Regional Navigation Satellite Systems) receivers are able to process combined signals from American GPS, Russian GLONASS, Chinese Beidou (BDS), European Galileo, Indian IRNSS, and Japan QZSS. Satellite-based augmentation systems (SBAS) are still not commonly used in the maritime domain, especially onboard vessels certified under international SOLAS convention. The issues and weaknesses of existing International Maritime Organization recommendations, guidelines, requirements, performance standards, and policies on GNSS shipborne sensors are discussed and presented in the paper. Many problems that have already been dealt with in other means of transportation are still to be solved in the maritime domain. The integrity monitoring is addressed as the main issue, and recommendations based on solutions implemented in aviation and the latest research are proposed. Finally, the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats awaiting maritime GNSS standardization process are outlined.

Experimental Study of Accuracy of High-Rate GNSS in Context of Structural Health Monitoring

Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS)-based technologies have become an indispensable part of current structural health monitoring (SHM) systems because of the unique capability of the GNSS technologies to provide accurate real-time displacement information. GNSS equipment with a data sampling rate of up to about 20 Hz has been widely used for this purpose. High-rate GNSS systems (typically up to about 100 Hz) offer additional advantages in structural health monitoring as some highly dynamic civil structures, such as some bridges, require high-rate monitoring data to capture the dynamic behaviors. However, the performance of high-rate GNSS positioning in the context of structural health monitoring is not entirely known, as studies on structural monitoring with high-rate GNSS positioning are very limited, especially considering that some of the satellite systems just reached their full constellations very recently. We carried out a series of experiments with the help of a shaking table to assess the SHM performance of a set of 100 Hz GNSS equipment and three commonly used GNSS positioning techniques, PPP (precise point positioning), PPP-AR (precise point positioning with ambiguity resolution), and RTK (real-time kinematic). We found that the standard deviations of the 100 Hz GNSS displacement solutions derived from PPP, PPP-AR, and RTK techniques were 5.5 mm, 3.6 mm, and 0.8 mm, respectively, when the antenna was in quasi-static motion, and about 9.2 mm, 6.2 mm, and 3.5 mm, respectively, when the antenna was in vibration (up to about 0.7 Hz), under typical urban observational conditions in Hong Kong. We also found that the higher a sampling rate is, the lower the accuracy of a measured displacement series is. On average, the 10 Hz and 100 Hz results are 5.5% and 10.3%, respectively, noisier than the 1 Hz results.
