Air pollution, climate change and health: from evidence to action

The adverse effects of air pollution and climate change on human health have already been a major global environmental issue, and the challenges in China are even more severe. In this issue, titled "Air Pollution Climate, Change and Health" , we present a series of articles that reviewed and analyzed the impact of air pollution and climate change on human health systematically, and propose recommendations for the next phase of research. Meanwhile, we introduce the latest achievements of the World Health Organization (WHO) in coping with air pollution and health, summarize the first WHO Global Conference on Air Pollution and Health, and provide evidence-based guidelines for control and prevention of climate change and air pollution in China.

Climate Change and India's Preparedness in Agriculture

India is the second populous country in the world. It is aspire to be the developed country in near future .But it is facing huge challenge in term of climate change. Irregular monsoon, depleting Glaciers in Himalaya, rising temperature are the some sign of climate change. Due to climate change agricultural production has been declining. It has also adverse impact on animal husbandry. So it has affected the livelihood of millions of people. The world’s governments have agreed on an ambitious agenda to transform our world by 2030, adopting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that aim to ensure no one is left behind, and everyone benefits from development efforts. Agenda 2030 is unprecedented in scope and significance. There is a significant departure from the previous framework to now include a “harmonizing” of three elements: economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection. But the fault line, as ever in global conferences, is the inappropriate balance between environment and development. But how far we prepared to face the adverse effect of climate change on Indian agriculture. The aim of the paper is to analyses the adverse effect of climate change on Indian agriculture and preparedness of the country as a whole.

2018 IEEE 4th GEMCCon: Stellenbosch, South Africa

The 4th edition of the IEEE Global Electromagnetic Compatibility Conference (GEMCCon) was successfully held from 7 to 9 November 2018 in Stellenbosch, South Africa, at the Wallenberg Conference Centre, part of the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS). Although the conference was relatively small, with 48 attendees, it allowed for much better interaction and collaboration. A total of 15 peer-reviewed papers were presented, together with five invited experts (two local and three international), two industry workshops, and a tutorial talk.

IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering is publishing a volume of conference proceedings that contains a selection of papers presented at the 7th Global Conference on Materials Science and Engineering (CMSE 2018), which is an annual event started from 2012.The 7th Global Conference on Materials Science and Engineering (CMSE2018) was held on November 1st-4th, 2018, in Xi’an, China. This conference was organized by School of Materials and Chemical Engineering, Xi’an Technological University, China, and it was hosted by Xi’an Technological University, Shaanxi Key Laboratory of Optoelectronic Functional Materials and Devices, Corrosion and Protection of Shaanxi Province, as well as supported by Northwestern Polytechnical University, Shaanxi University of Science and Technology, Xi’an Aeronautical University, China.CMSE2018 was attended by about 200 participants from leading universities and research institutes as well as technological innovative enterprises from 26 countries, including Austria, Belgium, Brazil, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Hungary, India, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Poland, Republic of Korea, Romania, Russia, Singapore, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand, UK, Ukraine, and US.The conference has provided a high-level national and international research for scholars, scientists, researchers, and engineers to present their results in the field of Materials Science and Engineering. Over 100 participants shared their oral presentations, and 26 shared their poster presentations mainly on 7 topics: Advanced Material Technologies, Energy materials and Semiconductors, Mechanics and Mechanical technologies, Nanomaterials, Surface and Coatings Technology, Characterization & Testing and Structural materials. The Brazilian "I/Eye" at the IABA Global Conference: The Year in Brazil

The Brazilian "I/Eye" at the IABA Global ConferenceThe Year in Brazil Sergio da Silva Barcellos (bio) At the Sixth IABA Conference in 2008, Philippe Lejeune posed a seemingly enigmatic question: "Is the I international?" The conundrum was only apparent. Illustrating with his personal and professional experience, Lejeune offered a glimpse of the trajectory of autobiography studies from "colonization," as considered by Georges Gusdorf in 1956, to "globalization," being discussed in 2008. Core to his reflections was the inquiry into whether translations of critical texts and original works compensate for linguistic insufficiencies and whether some life experiences could cross borders more easily than narratives attached to national or historical realities. Although now we approach autobiographical narratives from the perspectives of decolonization and posthumanism, some questions presented by Lejeune during the 2008 conference remain relevant, such as "Are there any general, transversal, comparative, multinational studies on autobiography or the diary?" (12) or "Is it possible to construct a theory of autobiography without its carrying the mark of a specific culture or a particular ideology—in short, can our ideas be translated?" (13). Indeed, the extensive and irreplaceable contribution of Philippe Lejeune to the field of auto/biographical studies itself has not achieved an international scope, nor has it been widely accessible in more than a few hegemonic languages.1 The background perspective for answering these questions has been suggested by Eva Karpinski: "In the landscape where migrancy and translation are inextricably linked, people affected by larger historical shifts, past and present, turn to life narrative as a means of translating their lived experiences into texts" (Borrowed Tongues 1). Whereas the encounter of ontological self and the narrated and narrating "I" represents more than a pact, it marks first a catalyst for the translation and migration of practical human experience into verbal or graphic narrative. An international summit of scholars and practitioners of life writing is unquestionably an excellent arena for the development of these pieces of knowledge through the [End Page 13] exchange of experiences and exposure to debate and scrutiny. However, how much of the essence of this catalyst is missing due to cultural and linguistic barriers? In an essay for The European Journal of Life Writing issue commemorating Philippe Lejeune, Craig Howes stresses that since IABA's foundation in 1999 "language remains a demanding, and still not fully addressed challenge," despite many efforts to minimize linguistic barriers (35). Among these efforts, Howes cites the creation of regional divisions of the association: Europe, Americas, Asia-Pacific, and Africa. In addition to this, I would like to mention individual efforts, such as those of the IABA Students and New Scholars Network (SNS) members, who provide multilingual materials during their workshops. Ten years after the 2008 conference, the IABA Conference took place in Brazil—a country with a rich culture of auto/biographical writing yet so timid in life writing studies, so permeable to the seduction of the self or "the autobiographic temptation," to use an expression coined by Philippe Gasparini, and yet so concerned with questions of formality, literary value, ideological contents, and philosophical or political engagement. Perhaps these questions should have reemerged during this most recent IABA conference, held in a Portuguese-speaking country while the official language of the conference was English. Efforts were made to minimize linguistic alienation, but the echo of the question "can our ideas be translated?" reverberated through the four days of the conference. Moreover, other questions could be raised. How was the Brazilian "I" presented? How was the Brazilian "eye" contrasted with other epistemological frameworks and methodological approaches in life writing studies? How much of the Brazilian "eye" was shared and communicated to this international audience? Unquestionably, the dedicated participants, both nationals and foreigners, contributed to an unprecedented joint effort to strengthen the ties between scholars and practitioners of life writing. Although it would be an arduous task to assess a specific and tangible result, an attempt to review some particularly strong contributions could be a fruitful exercise. The theme of the conference, "Secret Lives: Hiding, Revealing, Belonging," despite using a problematic adjective such as "secret," allowed participants to explore a wide range of rich analytical possibilities available within the life writing realm...

The politics of global youth participation

ABSTRACTThis article critically examines increased opportunities for youth participation in global political affairs created by the United Nations and its member states in the 2010s. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork and interviews at three global youth conferences, this study demonstrates the operationalization of participatory governance, a current mode of global politics, that seeks to engage multi-stakeholders in a seemingly more democratic and egalitarian process. It investigates how the structure and culture of participation mechanisms found in international political processes limited youth engagement. Young people expressed both dissatisfaction with what they perceived to be their inability to participate meaningfully and their desire to fulfill their human right to participation. The author argues that this reflects the construction an ideal global youth-citizen today as marked by an individual’s exercise of compulsory participation as a self-governing and responsible subject. Participation is employed as a mode of governance so that young people may instrumentally advance thier life chances against the insecurities of social risks imposed on them in the retreat of state provisions. The study underscores the need to critically examine the institutionalization of political youth agency.

Characteristics and possible utilisation of Busha population in different Balkan countries

Because of the economic, cultural and scientific reasons it is very important to protect biological diversity of autochthonous breeds like Busha. In the past several decades, as a result of uncontrolled crossing of this cattle with some more productive breeds, the number of purebred Busha animals is permanently being reduced which imposes an urgent need for setting up in situ and ex situ conservation program for this breed. Since Busha is bred in many Balkan countries, the aim of this study was to define main productive, reproductive and exterior traits of Busha cattle in the following countries: Bosnia and Hercegovina, Croatia, Macedonia and Serbia. Also, number of animals and possibility of future production system was analysed. Analysed data indicate that highest milk production potential and lowest age at first mating has Serbian Busha (till 2000 kg in lactation, at 18 months). Regarding the exterior traits, smallest frame was observed in Bosnian and Macedonian Busha. The population decrease in the past several decades was determined in all analysed countries. The conservation programs in Croatia and Serbia resulted in certain increase of Busha population, but aiming successful preservation of the breed, economically effective production systems should be put in practice. The branding of Busha’s products could result in necessary added value. Taking into account similarity between all Busha breeds as well as population sizes, branding should be organized on regional level. INTRODUCTION Competent pharmacy practice requires the ability to critically evaluate the medical literature and communicate pharmacotherapy information and recommendations to healthcare practitioners. Given the limited research on how these skills are taught, a seminar course in the third year of the pharmacy curriculum was designed to strengthen these skills and abilities. METHODS This was a prospective, pre- and post-cohort survey design. Students were informed of the study's intent with participation being voluntary and not affecting their course grade. Students received the same survey at the beginning and end of the semester. The 20-question survey assessed self-perceived confidence in the domains of communication and literature evaluation using a 5-point, Likert-type Strongly Disagree-Strongly Agree Scale. Demographic information and students' previous pharmacy work and internship experience were collected as a part of the survey. Descriptive statistics and Student's t-test were used to assess the research question and comparisons of student demographics. RESULTS Sixty-eight of a possible 91 students (75% response rate) completed both the pre- and post-survey. There was no statistically significant differences between any of the measured demographics. Overall, students slightly agreed they were confident in their communication and literature evaluation skills in the pre-course evaluation, with communicating drug interactions as the least confident area. Post-course, students were significantly more confident in all but 5 of 20 measured areas. CONCLUSION The Seminar course resulted in a positive change in students' perception of confidence to communicate with healthcare professionals and ability to evaluate drug literature.

Biosecurity system reforms and the development of a risk-based surveillance and pathway analysis system for ornamental fish imported into Australia

The ornamental fish trade in Australia has an estimated value of AUD$350 million and involves importation of up to 20 million fish from 26 approved countries each year. Critical reviews indicated that the biosecurity system did not fully manage the risks associated with fish that were sub-clinically infected with diseases such as megalocytiviruses, or the threats posed by emerging diseases. Subsequent reforms have placed a greater emphasis on managing biosecurity risks off-shore at the source, coupled with an on-arrival surveillance system to assess compliance with biosecurity regulation.This presentation at the first global Conference in Aquatic Animal Epidemiology in Oslo, Norway in September 2016, describes the Department of Agriculture Water Resources’ current initiatives to address increased risks in real-time while facilitating safe trade. The department is developing an innovative real-time, responsive risk-based surveillance capability to detect systemic failures on the part of the animal health authorities.The program involves a risk-based sampling algorithm on ornamental fish imported into Australia and testing for megalocytiviruses, spring viraemia of carp virus and Aeromonas salmonicida.We present the system and the results from several trials. The information generated by the verification surveillance system will be quantitative and semi-quantitative in nature and will form the basis of the department’s response to detect systematic non-compliances by overseas authorities. Evidence collected through the ongoing analysis of surveillance data will become the basis of real-time feedback to overseas authorities for remedial action at source. Delays in resolving non-compliance issues could result in the suspension of off-shore equivalent measures from particular sources.

Universal health coverage necessitates a system approach: an analysis of Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) initiative in Ghana

The 9th Global conference on health promotion (Shanghai 2016) reaffirmed the role of primary health care (PHC) in achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. Gaining much international recognition, the community-based health planning and services (CHPS) initiative is considered one of the pragmatic strategy in delivering on the promise of universal health coverage (UHC) through the PHC strategy, in Ghana. Yet, certain key factors threaten its successes – renewing the relevance of this study to present the barriers to and facilitators of the initiative. According to our findings, CHPS contribution particularly in bridging geographical access to health cannot be demeaned. Nevertheless, the full functioning of the initiative is limited by factors centered on the following themes: health governance and leadership, provision of services of quality, financial risk protection strategies targeting public health, information and care continuity, and the right mix of trained health professionals of even distribution across communities. Addressing the challenges of CHPS demand a system-approach. Substantial progress is more likely to emerge with improved leadership especially on the part of Governments to take bold political step to provide adequate financial and material resources. However, much will be achieved when stakeholders including the community work in synergies, to manage competing priorities by focusing on the core values and goals of CHPS.

Structured Multi-Stakeholder Workshops to Advance a Global Transformative Roadmap for Pharmaceutical Workforce.

Seven workshops with a uniform structure were developed. These were designed to improve communication, harmonise outcome-generation, and allow for aggregate analysis. A team of seven conducted each workshop, each team consisted of: a Chair, a facilitator, one rapporteur, and four speakers purposively selected from FIP member organisations and other key stakeholders with expertise for sharing a variety of perspectives. Guidelines and templates were developed for all roles and each team was briefed in advance. Approximately 200 personnel participated in the seven workshops, with around 20 country representatives per workshop, covering all six World Health Organisation regions. Three key aspects of workforce transformation, using the PWDGs, were explored in each workshop: drivers for implementation; challenges to implementation; and ways of encouraging implementation. Drivers for implementation mentioned were enhancing collaboration and engagement. Challenges to implementation were identified as variance in terminology. Several ways of encouraging implementation were acknowledged, such as communication strategies, advocating for workforce development and sharing best practices to foster partnerships. The unique format of the workshops, the innovative approach to include stakeholders across an array of settings and the parallel structure in all the seven workshops, aided in creating reliable findings. The achievability of the PWDGs depends on several factors. Engagement with stakeholders and engagement from and between professional associations are important factors to achieving workforce development goals.

Socio Technical Systems of a Company: The Dimensionality of Socio Technical Systems

Socio technical systems (STS) are to be designed as agile work systems that respond to environmental challenges and at the same time institutionalize organizational core functions that enable to create and sustain value in an organization. STS should spread its wings to institutionalize these functions/dimensions and provide cohesiveness among them to become adaptable to the demands of organization and environment simultaneously. The four dimensions of STS uncovered based on 'Human Goals Based Theory of the Firm (HGBTF)' are knowledge management, competitiveness, corporate entrepreneurship and HRM Practices. The exploratory research suggests that companies should develop and deploy STS to institutionalize these four dimensions for continuous learning, enhanced value proposition, consistent innovation, and employee development. Hence, all the successful companies consider STS as an organizational goal for holistic development, sustainability, and transformational change of organization. A Call for Hospitality

Abstract During the past decade, global conferences on Receptive Ecumenism have directed ecumenists’ attention to the importance of hospitality for the flourishing of Receptive Ecumenism; this has been discussed conceptually, but not yet with respect to practice. In order to explore a practical example of hospitality within Receptive Ecumenism, I draw on a case study concerning a particular group of Catholic women in the Midlands, U.K. who organize small-scale, women-only Receptive Ecumenism conferences at grass roots. Through reflecting theologically upon their practices, important learning arises, which shapes the nature of hospitality required for Receptive Ecumenism. Further to this, against the backdrop of Christ’s radical hospitality, a prophetic call unfolds, which challenges the churches’ own hospitality to women and their reception of women’s gifts.

This new event is destined to become a leading global conference on computing education. At the intersection of computing and the learning sciences, the CompEd seeks to promote global computing education development. The plan is to hold CompEd every two years in parts of the world not regularly served by SIGCSE conferences.
