Calcareous Nannofossil variability controlled by Milankovitch and sub-Milankovitch periodicity in the Monte San Nicola section (Gelasian GSSP / MIS 100–104)

The Quaternary marks the beginning of the ice ages, with the establishment of a stable Northern Hemisphere ice sheet. The Monte San Nicola section, southern Sicily (Italy) is the Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point of the Gelasian Stage of the Lower Quaternary Subseries and is attracting new attention for providing valuable information on paleoclimate evolution.Here we present a paleoenvironmental reconstruction based on new data from calcareous nannoplankton, the phytoplankton organisms that are sensitive to sea surface changes and water column dynamics. We adopt statistical and signal analysis to support our paleoenvironmental model. The most evident paleoenvironmental signal throughout the investigated interval is the contrast between the abundance patterns of placoliths and Florisphaera profunda, the former pointing to surface productivity (water column mixing, shallow nutricline), the latter to the establishment of a deep nutricline. The observed nutricline depth shift occurred with a regular precessional pace, following Northern Hemisphere summer insolation and, likely, North African monsoon activity. A significant periodicity of 8 kyr, in tune with late Quaternary Heinrich events, is also observed in nannoplankton taxa, supporting previous findings on the existence of suborbital climatic variability even at the Pliocene-Pleistocene transition.

Stable carbon isotope chemostratigraphy of the base of the Callovian in Greenland

D’Orbigny named the Callovian stage after Kellaways in Wiltshire, UK, in the 1850 s. However, agreement on its boundaries and, more recently, on the position and location of the Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for the base of the Callovian has proven difficult for the last 170 years. This is mainly due to the lack of agreement on the appropriate index fossil and its regional and global correlations, as well as the location of the stratotype section. Stable carbon isotope chemostratigraphy and event stratigraphy are now essential tools for aiding in the definition of GSSPs. In this study, stable carbon isotopic analysis of 91 samples from east Greenland’s Middle Jurassic shallow marine sandstones of the Pelion Formation (Store Koldewey and Hold with Hope) and correlative and well-dated offshore siltstones and mudstones of the Fossilbjerget Formation (Jameson Land) is used to discriminate several isotopic events previously observed in other European basins and propose the early Callovian (δ13CTOC) positive carbon isotopic excursion as a secondary marker for defining the Callovian GSSP. The early Callovian (δ13CTOC) positive carbon isotopic excursion is a fundamental tool for superregional correlation between candidate GSSPs and Standard Auxiliary Boundary Stratotypes. It can also help establish a chronological order (synchronous vs diachronous) of species occurrences between different locations.

Palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic study of the Olazagutia (Spain) and Ten Mile Creek-Arbor Park (USA) sections during the Coniacian–Santonian interval

The mechanisms and palaeoenvironmental conditions leading to and occurring through the Coniacian–Santonian Ocean Anoxic Event 3 (OAE3) are poorly known, particularly with regard to the marine phosphorus cycle and the climatic conditions in general. To explore these issues further, two famous locations have been studied, Olazagutia (Spain) and Ten Mile Creek–Arbor Park (TX, USA), which are located in different palaeogeographical areas and deposited at different palaeodepths. The study of these two locations is based on mineralogy (bulk and clay), geochemistry (stable isotopes, organic matter, phosphorus and major element) and high-resolution biostratigraphy (nannofossils) to infer changes in climate and primary productivity across OAE3. The investigated sections were both previously proposed as candidates for the base Santonian global boundary stratotype section and point (GSSP). The Olazagutia section was ratified in 2013, where the base of the Santonian was defined by the first appearance datum of the inoceramid Platyceramus undulatoplicatus . Both sections, deposited in oxygenated conditions, record the δ 13 C patterns which characterized the Coniacian–Santonian OAE3 interval, in particular the positive carbon-isotope excursions comprising the K2, Michel Dean and Bedwell events. New nannofossil biostratigraphy for both sections is presented including new occurrences. Significant diachronism of marker taxa is observed between the Spanish and Texan sections. Based on a weathering index and mineralogy, similar climate changes are observed in all sections. The climate shifted synchronously from relatively drier to warmer and wetter conditions above the Coniacian–Santonian boundary from the Michel Dean event to above the Bedwell event during the early Santonian. Fluctuations in total phosphorus contents appear mainly to have been driven by changes in detrital input and consequently by climate change in Spain and Texas. Several bentonite layers were observed in Texas close to the Coniacian–Santonian boundary, but only one located 7 m above the Coniacian–Santonian boundary provided sufficient well-preserved zircon minerals, and gives an age of 86.24 ± 0.12 Ma based on U–Pb geochronology, consistent with an early Santonian age.

Jurassic–Cretaceous boundary in the Dedina section (Serbian Carpathians): Effects of remagnetization on magnetostratigraphy

The Upper Tithonian to Lower Berriasian carbonate sequence of the Getic Nappe system was studied near Golubac (eastern Serbia) using rock-magnetic and paleomagnetic methods to verify the age of the magnetization and to correlate magnetostratigraphy with biostratigraphy. A major part of the Dedina section shows the presence of authigenic goethite, hematite and magnetite as carriers of remagnetization. The youngest overprint, residing in goethite, sometimes carrying up to 90 % of natural remanent magnetization, was probably received after 18 Ma. The remagnetization residing in hematite and magnetite, attributed to the late Early Cretaceous collision, was obtained during long normal polarity Chron C34 (118–82 Ma). The mean direction implies a clockwise post-remagnetization rotation by about 57°. The normal (Dn) and reverse (Er) polarity components, heavily affected by the chemo-remanent magnetization overprint, can be tentatively interpreted in terms of polarity zones. Thus, the obtained data enabled a preliminary identification of M17r to M19n.2n magnetochrons. The correlation of magnetostratigraphy with biostratigraphy of the Dedina section contributes to the stratigraphic framework necessary for the definition of the Berriasian Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point.

Sedimentary DNA reveals phytoplankton diversity loss in a deep maar lake during the Anthropocene

AbstractAnthropogenic‐driven environmental change, including current climate warming, has influenced lake ecosystems globally during the Anthropocene. Phytoplankton are important indicators of environmental changes in lakes and play a fundamental role in maintaining the functioning and stability of these ecosystems. However, the extent to which lake phytoplankton were affected by anthropogenic or climatic forces during the Anthropocene remains unclear. Here, we investigated the 160‐yr‐long dynamics of the phytoplankton community (cyanobacteria and eukaryotic microalgae) in response to anthropogenic forcing in Sihailongwan Maar Lake—a candidate for a Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point for demarcation of the Anthropocene—using DNA metabarcoding and traditional paleolimnological approaches. Our results show a significant decline in phytoplankton diversity and an abrupt shift in community composition around the 1950s, corresponding to the beginning of the “Great Acceleration” period. Specifically, phytoplankton taxa coexistence patterns, niche differentiation, and assembly mechanisms changed significantly after the 1950s. Overall, increases in air temperature and anthropogenic forcing appear to be the dominant controls for community reorganization and diversity decline of the phytoplankton from this deep maar lake. A neutral community model suggests that phytoplankton community composition was mainly controlled by stochastic processes before the 1950s; however, as time progressed, deterministic effects driven by anthropogenic global warming increased. The results of this study imply that anthropogenic perturbations have led to a loss of phytoplankton diversity and a further decline in ecological resilience in deep lakes, with likely knock‐on effects on the productivity and function of lake ecosystems.

The Central South Atlantic: The origin of its waters, its evolution and effects beyond

The primitive sea that occupied the Central South Atlantic (CSA), part of the intra-Gondwana rift during the Early Cretaceous, allowed precipitation of an extensive and thick layer of evaporites, the Ibura Salt, followed by the deposition of a prominent Albian carbonate package. Although the shallow platform facies do not contain classical benthic Tethys markers, the pelagic open sea carbonates are essentially dominated by planktonic elements coming from the Tethys Realm. This condition led some researchers to think that Tethys waters also contributed to salt formation, an idea that clashes with the geotectonic model of northward separation of Africa and South America and ingression of predominantly Austral marine waters. Now, a new controversy arises as to the age of this salt layer when trying to position bio-events and lithological and chemostratigraphic markers from these rocks with respect to established data for the Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point for the Aptian/Albian boundary (GSSP-Alb). Biochronostratigraphic information on planktonic foraminifera points to an Aptian age as opposed to the earliest Albian traditionally accepted for the carbonate section that overlies the giant salt layer. On the other hand, stratigraphic and geochronological data suggest an age of 113 Ma for the base of the salt, very near to the 113.2 ± 0.1 Ma arbitrated for the GSSP-Alb. In this study, we adopt the base of the evaporite bed as the Aptian/Albian boundary in the CSA, Equatorial South Atlantic (ESA), and northeastern Brazilian interior basins (BNE) as well. Based on these criteria, a broad review and the integration of available information have led to new interpretations regarding the earliest phase of these segments of the South Atlantic and adjacent areas. Initially, during the Aptian-Albian transition, an ephemeral interior sea within Brazil, drawing its waters from the north, would have contributed to salt deposition in the intra-Gondwana rift (evaporitic stage of the CSA). Afterward, but still within the earliest Albian, the evaporitic system evolved into a carbonate gulf when the northern barrier, the Exception Zone (EZ), disappeared. The lagoonal circulation pattern that then formed in the CSA created a hypersaline and warm outflow plume that swept across the marine bottom of the ESA and part of the Tethys Sea. Paleoceanographic events registered at Site 545, Mazagan Plateau, support this new hypothesis and illustrate the potential complexity of correlation of organic-rich deposits in which local influences have been greater than global ones. This long, narrow, and continuous carbonate gulf disappeared at the end of the Albian with the arrival of southern waters from the Meridional South Atlantic (MSA), and the South Atlantic became consolidated as a proto-ocean.

The integrated biostratigraphy and palaeoenvironments across the Jurassic–Cretaceous boundary in the Dedina section (eastern Serbian Carpathians)

Upper Tithonian to lower Berriasian carbonate sequence of the Getic Nappe System was studied near Golubac using an integrated biostratigraphy approach based on calpionellid, calcareous dinoflagellate, nannofossil, foraminifer, and palynomorph record. Calpionellids allowed subdivision of the section to standard calpionellid zones including the Colomi and Alpina subzones on the Tithonian–Berriasian transition. Nannofossil Nannoconus wintereri proves the presence of the NC0 Zone. Foraminifer fauna on the Tithonian–Berriasian transition contain zonal marker Globospirillina neocomiana and some other potential stratigraphic markers, whose range and taxonomy have to be fixed yet. Poor palynomorph spectra consist of long-ranging Lower-Cretaceous spores and pollen, and a few dinoflagellate cysts known from the Berriasian. Integrated biostratigraphy of the Tithonian–Berriasian oligotrophic open-marine carbonate facies of the Dedina section contributes to the stratigraphic framework necessary for the definition of the Berriasian Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point.

Integrated study on the base of the Coniacian Stage in the Caucasus

The continuous Turonian–Coniacian succession, exposed in the Shapsug quarry (northwestern Caucasus) composed of rhythmic carbonate strata of the hemipelagic and pelagic type, have been studied comprehensively. Foraminiferal zones, corresponding to the zonation recognized in the Coniacian Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP), have been identified. Chemostratigraphic (isotope) studies determine the levels of abiotic events traced in this section and in the GSSP for the base of the Coniacian Stage. The Shapsug section may be proposed a possible auxiliary section of the base of the Coniacian for the Russian Federation.

High-resolution climate variability across the Piacenzian/Gelasian boundary at land-based marine sequences of Monte San Nicola (Sicily, Mediterranean)

The Piacenzian – Gelasian transition is a time of profound changes in the Earth's climatic regime, epitomized by the definitive establishment of large ice caps in the Northern Hemisphere and the beginning of the “ice ages” at ca. 2.6 Ma. This event is sharply documented in δ18O records globally by a prominent triplet of severe glacial events (MIS 100, 98 and 96) that approximate the base of the Gelasian Stage. We have reconstructed a multi-species planktic and benthic foraminiferal δ18O and δ13C record from the Monte San Nicola section (Sicily) across the Piacenzian/Gelasian boundary, with the purpose of better constraining in time the main marker criteria for recognition of the Gelasian GSSP (Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point) and investigating in detail the paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic response of the central Mediterranean to the definitive onset of the Northern Hemisphere Glaciation. Our results confirm the reliability and usability of the criteria originally proposed for defining the Gelasian GSSP, and significantly improve their chronology and chronostratigraphic positioning. Beyond an obvious alternation of obliquity-driven glacial-interglacial cycles, our isotopic record unraveled a pervasive climate variability in the suborbital time domain, the origin of which is still ambiguous. Altogether data presented in this paper provide the first high resolution isotopic records shedding new light both on the stratigraphic and paleoclimatic evolution of the Central Mediterranean area at the beginning of the Northern Hemisphere Glaciation.

The Neogene–Quaternary boundary at its type locality, Monte San Nicola, Sicily, southern Italy: X-ray computed tomography and ichnofabric signals of the sapropelic Nicola bed

A new low-cost method is described for obtaining narrow blocks of the friable Nicola bed, the local marker for the Neogene–Quaternary system (Pliocene–Pleistocene series) boundary at the type section at Monte San Nicola, southern Sicily. The Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP), which also defines the Gelasian Stage and is dated at 2.58 Ma, is placed at the base of a marly layer immediately overlying the sapropelic microlaminated Nicola bed. Sedimentary structures and ichnofabrics revealed by X-ray computed tomography (CT) and polished surface observations show the rapid onset of anoxia marking the base of the Nicola bed, followed by progressive dysoxia indicated by the trace fossil Chondrites isp. alone. The top of the Nicola bed is bioturbated over an interval of several centimeters, which obscures precise recognition of the GSSP horizon. The overlying marl is characterised by the presence of Chondrites isp. accompanied by Planolites isp. and Thalassinoides isp. indicating a return to higher oxygen levels in the bottom waters, although a brief return to poor oxygenation is interpreted from the temporary absence/rarity of Chondrites isp. Trichichnus isp. is prevalent throughout the interval immediately above the Nicola bed, and its lowest extent revealed by CT may serve at least locally as an independent marker for the GSSP level. In general, we recommend the careful study of any sapropel before placing a GSSP at its upper or lower boundary or midpoint.

Agglutinated foraminifera from the Turonian–Coniacian boundary interval in Europe – paleoenvironmental remarks and stratigraphy

Abstract. Agglutinated foraminiferal assemblages of the Turonian–Coniacian from the GSSP (Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point) of Salzgitter–Salder (Subhercynian Cretaceous Basin, Germany) and other sections, including Bielefeld–Ostwestfalendamm (Münsterland Cretaceous Basin, Germany) and the Dover–Langdon Stairs (Anglo-Paris Basin, England), from the temperate European shelf realm were studied in order to collect additional stratigraphic and paleoenvironmental information. Stable carbon isotopes were measured for the Bielefeld–Ostwestfalendamm section to establish a reliable stratigraphic correlation with other sections. Highly diverse agglutinated foraminiferal assemblages were obtained from sections in the German basins, whereas the fauna from Dover is less rich in taxa and less abundant. In the German basinal sections, a morphogroup analysis of agglutinated foraminifera and the calculated diversities imply normal marine settings and oligotrophic to mesotrophic bottom-water conditions. Furthermore, acmes of agglutinated foraminifera correlate between different sections and can be used for paleoenvironmental analysis. Three acmes of the species Ammolagena contorta are recorded for the Turonian–Coniacian (perplexus to lower striatoconcentricus zones, lower scupini Zone, and hannovrensis Zone) and likely imply a shift to more oligotrophic bottom-water conditions. In the upper scupini Zone below the Turonian–Coniacian boundary, an acme of Bulbobaculites problematicus likely indicates enhanced nutrient availability. In general, agglutinated foraminiferal morphogroups display a gradual shift from Turonian oligotrophic environments towards more mesotrophic conditions in the latest Turonian and Coniacian.

How old is the Ordovician–Silurian boundary at Dob’s Linn, Scotland? Integrating LA-ICP-MS and CA-ID-TIMS U-Pb zircon dates

AbstractSedimentary rocks exposed at Dob’s Linn, Scotland, have significantly influenced our understanding of how life evolved over the Ordovician to Early Silurian. The current interpreted chronostratigraphic boundary between the Ordovician and Silurian periods is a Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP), calibrated to 443.8 ± 1.5 Ma (Hirnatian–Rhuddanian age), based on biostratigraphic markers, radioisotopic dates and statistical modelling. However, challenges arise due to tectonic disturbances, complex correlation issues and the lack of systematic dating in Ordovician–Silurian stratigraphic sections. Here, hundreds of zircon grains from three metabentonite ash horizons were dated using Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). A subset of the grains were re-analyzed using Chemical Abrasion Isotope Dilution Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry (CA-ID-TIMS). We present a high-precision CA-ID-TIMS 238U-206Pb weighted mean date of 440.44 ± 0.55/0.56/0.72 Ma (±analytical/with tracer/with U-decay constant) for the Coronagraptus cyphus biozone. However, the study reports younger, and in certain cases, older LA-ICP-MS zircon dates within the Coronagraptus cyphus, Akidograptus ascensus and Dicellograptus anceps zones, suspected as being influenced by Pb loss and LA-ICP-MS matrix mismatch. The study reports concerns about the suitability of Dob’s Linn as a GSSP section and examines various LA-ICP-MS maximum depositional age (MDA) approaches, suggesting the use of the TuffZirc date and the youngest mode weighted mean (YMWM) as suitable MDA calculations consistent with CA-ID-TIMS results.

Microfossils from Middle Triassic beds near Mišji Dol, central Slovenia

Middle Triassic beds exposed along the road between Mišji Dol and Poljane pri Primskovem (Posavje Hills) comprise marlstone, tuff, volcaniclastic sandstone, and thin- to medium-bedded limestone and dolostone. The succession was logged and sampled for conodonts. A relatively rich conodont assemblage was determined, consisting of Budurovignathus gabrielae Kozur, Budurovignathus sp., Cratognathodus kochi (Huckriede), Gladigondolella malayensis Nogami, Gladigondolella tethydis Huckriede, Gladigondolella sp., Neogondolella balkanica Budurov & Stefanov, Neogondolella cf. excentrica Budurov & Stefanov, Neogondolella constricta (Mosher & Clark), Neogondolella cornuta Budurov & Stefanov, Neogondolella sp., Paragondolella excelsa Mosher, Paragondolella liebermani (Kovacs & Kozur), Paragondolella trammeri (Kozur), Paragondolella cf. alpina (Kozur & Mostler), and Paragondolella sp. The assemblage correlates with the upper Anisian and lowermost Ladinian assemblages from the Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) of the Ladinian at Bagolino in the Southern Alps in northern Italy. Along with conodonts, numerous specimens of benthic foraminifera Nodobacularia? vujisici Urošević & Gaździcki were recovered from the lowermost part of the succession. Previous research on this taxon is critically evaluated.

129I in the SE-Dome ice core, Greenland: A new candidate golden spike for the Anthropocene

The Anthropocene is a proposed geological epoch that will mark the time when humans have irreversibly affected the Earth. One of the primary requirements to formally establish this is a Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point or “golden spike” – a record of a planetary signal marking the new epoch's beginning. The leading candidates for the Anthropocene's golden spike are the fallout peaks of 14C (T1/2 = 5730 y) and 239Pu (T1/2 = 24,110 y) from nuclear weapons testing in the 1960s. However, these radionuclides' half-lives may not be long enough for their signals to be observable in the far future and are, thus, not durable. In this regard, here we show the 129I time series record (1957–2007) of the SE-Dome ice core, Greenland. We find that 129I in SE-Dome records almost the entire history of the nuclear age in excellent detail at a time resolution of about four months. More specifically, 129I in SE-Dome reflects signals from nuclear weapons testing in 1958, 1961, and 1962, the Chernobyl Accident in 1986, and various signals from nuclear fuel reprocessing within the same year or a year after. The quantitative relationships between 129I in SE-Dome and these human nuclear activities were established using a numerical model. Similar signals are observed in other records from various environments worldwide, such as sediments, tree rings, and corals. This global ubiquity and synchronicity are comparable to those of the 14C and 239Pu bomb signals, but the much longer half-life of 129I (T1/2 = 15.7 My) makes it a more durable golden spike. For these reasons, the 129I record of the SE-Dome ice core can be considered an excellent candidate for the Anthropocene golden spike.

The Sihailongwan Maar Lake, northeastern China as a candidate Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point for the Anthropocene series

Sihailongwan Maar Lake, located in Northeast China, is a candidate Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for demarcation of the Anthropocene. The lake’s varved sediments are formed by alternating allogenic atmospheric inputs and authigenic lake processes and store a record of environmental and human impacts at a continental-global scale. Varve counting and radiometric dating provided a precise annual-resolution sediment chronology for the site. Time series records of radioactive (239,240Pu, 129I and soot 14C), chemical (spheroidal carbonaceous particles, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, soot, heavy metals, δ13C, etc.), physical (magnetic susceptibility and grayscale) and biological (environmental DNA) indicators all show rapid changes in the mid-20th century, coincident with clear lithological changes of the sediments. Statistical analyses of these proxies show a tipping point in 1954 CE. 239,240Pu activities follow a typical unimodal globally-distributed profile, and are proposed as the primary marker for the Anthropocene. A rapid increase in 239,240Pu activities at 88 mm depth in core SHLW21-Fr-13 (1953 CE) is synchronous with rapid changes of other anthropogenic proxies and the Great Acceleration, marking the onset of the Anthropocene. The results indicate that Sihailongwan Maar Lake is an ideal site for the Anthropocene GSSP.

Influence of Climatic Trends and Cycles on Varve Deposition in Crawford Lake, Ontario, Canada

Varves accumulating below the chemocline of meromictic Crawford Lake, Milton, Ontario, Canada, consist of dark-colored organic matter laminations that are primarily deposited during the fall plankton die-off, alternating with light-colored laminations comprising calcite crystals that are precipitated during a relatively narrow water temperature and pH-controlled depositional window in the summer. A novel high-resolution imaging protocol was used to photograph the varve record in the 87 cm-long freeze core CRA19-2FT-B2, collected from the deepest part (~23 m) of the lake in February 2019. High-resolution images were used to: (1) characterize varve couplets deposited between AD 1870 and 2000 (chronology verified through 137Cs/210Pb analysis of freeze core CRA22-1FRA-3, and consistent with the historic record of nuclear fallout and other proxies of the Great Acceleration); (2) document distinctive varves that permit a correlation between cores throughout the deep basin of Crawford Lake; (3) measure the thickness of individual dark and light- colored laminations, which were found to vary between 0.04 mm and 3.76 mm; and (4) carry out wavelet and spectral time series analyses based on varve thickness data that can be correlated to climatic trends and cycles. Time series analyses identified cycles with statistically significant periodicities that were attributed to the Quasi-biennial Oscillation (2.3 years), El Niño Southern Oscillation (2–7 years), the 11-year Schwabe Sunspot cycle and a possible Pacific Decadal Oscillation (50–70 years). This research not only provides baseline chronostratigraphic data that allow the correlation between freeze cores subsampled for various proxies, but also documents the dynamics of the climate drivers that influence the deposition of both organic matter and inorganically precipitated calcite. Crawford Lake is currently a candidate site under consideration for the Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) to define the Anthropocene series/epoch.

The Palmer ice core as a candidate Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point for the Anthropocene series

The remote Antarctic continent, distant from human industrial activity, should be one of the last places on Earth to capture Anthropogenic change. Hence, stratigraphic evidence of pollution and nuclear activity in the Antarctic provides proof of the global nature of the Anthropocene epoch. We propose an Antarctic Peninsula ice core candidate for the Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) to the onset of the Anthropocene. The Palmer ice core captures the first evidence of spheroidal carbonaceous fly ash particles (SCPs), resulting from high temperature combustion deposited in Antarctic ice. SCPs first appear in 1936 CE, preceding the rise in plutonium (239+240Pu) concentrations from 1945 CE onwards. GSSP 1952 CE occurs at a depth of 34.9 m, coincident with the peak in 239+240Pu the primary marker for this site.

Annual-scale assessment of mid-20th century anthropogenic impacts on the algal ecology of Crawford Lake, Ontario, Canada.

Meromictic Crawford Lake, located in SW Ontario, Canada is characterized by varved sediments, making it suitable for high-resolution paleoecological studies. Freeze cores, the only coring method available that reliably preserves the fragile laminations representative of seasonal deposition in the lake, were used to document siliceous diatom and chrysophyte community structure at an annual resolution from 1930-1990CE. Stratigraphically constrained cluster analysis identified major assemblage changes that are believed to have been caused by local, regional and possibly global anthropogenic impacts. The assemblage changes within the siliceous algae are attributed to regional weather and increased industrial emissions and related effects of acid deposition on the lake's catchment associated with the Great Acceleration -the massive economic, industrial, and demographic expansion beginning in the mid-20th century. Observed increases in spheroidal carbonaceous particles (SCPs) in varved lake sediment dating to the early 1950s record rapidly expanding steel production without emission controls around 30 km upwind of the lake. The findings reported here reflect major changes in earth systems that the Anthropocene Working Group recommends for a proposed epoch to be termed the Anthropocene, providing support for the laminated sediments from Crawford Lake as a potential Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP).
