Timescales of glacial isostatic adjustment in Greenland: is transient rheology required?

SUMMARY The possibility of a transient rheological response to ice age loading, first discussed in the literature of the 1980s, has received renewed attention. Transient behaviour across centennial to millennial timescales has been invoked to reconcile apparently contradictory inferences of steady-state (Maxwell) viscosity based on two distinct data sets from Greenland: Holocene sea-level curves and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) derived modern crustal uplift data. To revisit this issue, we first compute depth-dependent Fréchet kernels using 1-D Maxwell viscoelastic Earth models and demonstrate that the mantle resolving power of the two Greenland data sets is highly distinct, reflecting the differing spatial scale of the associated surface loading: the sea-level records are sensitive to viscosity structure across the entire upper mantle while uplift rates associated with post-1000 CE fluctuations of the Greenland Ice Sheet have a dominant sensitivity to shallow asthenosphere viscosity. Guided by these results, we present forward models which demonstrate that a moderate low viscosity zone beneath the lithosphere in Maxwell Earth models provides a simple route to simultaneously reconciling both data sets by significantly increasing predictions of present-day uplift rates in Greenland whilst having negligible impact on predictions of Holocene relative sea-level curves from the region. Our analysis does not rule out the possibility of transient deformation, but it suggests that it is not required to simultaneously explain these two data sets. A definitive demonstration of transient behaviour requires that one account for the resolving power of the data sets in modelling the glacial isostatic adjustment process.

A complex record of last interglacial sea-level history and paleozoogeography, Santa Rosa Island, Channel Islands National Park, California, USA

Studies of marine terraces and their fossils can yield important information about sea level history, tectonic uplift rates, and paleozoogeography, but some aspects of terrace history, particularly with regard to their fossil record, are not clearly understood. Marine terraces are well preserved on Santa Rosa Island, California, and the island is situated near a major marine faunal boundary. Two prominent low-elevation terraces record the ∼80 ka (marine isotope stage [MIS] 5a) and ∼120 ka (MIS 5e) high-sea stands, based on U-series dating of fossil corals and aminostratigraphic correlation to dated localities elsewhere in California and Baja California. Low uplift rates are implied by an interpretation of these ages, along with their elevations. The fossil assemblage from the ∼120 ka (2nd) terrace contains a number of northern, cool-water species, along with several southern, warm-water species, a classic example of what has been called a thermally anomalous fauna. Low uplift rates in the late Pleistocene, combined with glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) processes, could have resulted in reoccupation of the ∼120 ka (MIS 5e), 2nd terrace during the ∼100 ka (MIS 5c) high-sea stand, explaining the mix of warm-water (∼120 ka?) and cool-water (∼100 ka?) fossils in the terrace deposits. In addition, however, sea surface temperature (SST) variability during MIS 5e may have been a contributing factor, given that Santa Rosa Island is bathed at times by the cold California Current with its upwelling and at other times is subject to El Niño warm waters, evident in the Holocene SST record. Study of an older, high-elevation marine terrace on the western part of Santa Rosa Island shows more obvious evidence of fossil mixing. Strontium isotope ages span a large range, from ∼2.3 Ma to ∼0.91 Ma. These analyses indicate an age range of ∼500 ka at one locality and ∼ 600 ka at another locality, interpreted to be due to terrace reoccupation and fossil reworking. Consideration of elevations and ages here also yield low, long-term uplift rates, which in part explains the potential for terrace reoccupation in the early Pleistocene. In addition, however, early Pleistocene glacial-interglacial cycles were of much shorter duration, linked to the ∼41 ka obliquity cycle of orbital forcing, a factor that would also enhance terrace reoccupation in regions of low uplift rate. It is likely that other Pacific Coast marine terrace localities of early Pleistocene age, in areas with low uplift rates, also have evidence of fossil mixing from these processes, an hypothesis that can be tested in future studies.

An ensemble of Antarctic deglacial simulations constrained by geological observations

The Antarctic ice sheet has the potential to make a significant contribution to future sea-level rise. Understanding this potential and making projections of future ice sheet mass change requires use of numerical models. Confidence in model projections can be improved by hindcasting: testing the model against past ice sheet changes. Robust deglacial model reconstructions are also used to correct satellite gravimetric measurements of current change for glacial isostatic adjustment processes. Here we present a new model ensemble of post-Last Glacial Maximum Antarctic deglaciation reconstructions. The ensemble is generated using the Parallel Ice Sheet Model (PISM) in which we vary a range of parameters including key glaciological controls, basal sediment strength, mantle viscosity, and climate forcing. We test the ensemble results against a database of geological constraints, and develop a new scoring scheme that allows us to determine metrics of model performance against past ice sheet grounding line extent, ice sheet thickness, and thinning rates, as well as present-day ice sheet configuration. We discuss the parameter combinations that lead to the highest-scoring simulations and we also compare our ensemble performance with existing published deglacial models, using the same scoring scheme. Exploring the characteristics of the highest-scoring ensemble members highlights some key features of deglacial behaviour including a relatively narrow range of past excess ice volumes at the LGM, Holocene retreat behind present-day grounding lines with commensurate volume minima, and readvance behaviours. The comparison also allows us to identify areas where more geological data would have high constraining power for ice sheet models.

Understanding Water Level Changes in the Great Lakes by an ICA-Based Merging of Multi-Mission Altimetry Measurements

Accurately monitoring spatio-temporal changes in lake water levels is important for studying the impacts of climate change on freshwater resources, and for predicting natural hazards. In this study, we applied multi-mission radar satellite altimetry data from the Laurentian Great Lakes, North America to optimally reconstruct multi-decadal lake-wide spatio-temporal changes of water level. We used the results to study physical processes such as teleconnections of El Niño and southern oscillation (ENSO) episodes over approximately the past three-and-a-half decades (1985–2018). First, we assessed three reconstruction methods, namely the standard empirical orthogonal function (EOF), complex EOF (CEOF), and complex independent component analysis (CICA), to model the lake-wide changes of water level. The performance of these techniques was evaluated using in-situ gauge data, after correcting the Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (GIA) process using a contemporary GIA forward model. While altimeter-measured water level was much less affected by GIA, the averaged gauge-measured water level was found to have increased up to 14 cm over the three decades. Our results indicate that the CICA-reconstructed 35-year lake level was more accurate than the other two techniques. The correlation coefficients between the CICA reconstruction and the in situ water-level data were 0.96, 0.99, 0.97, 0.97, and 0.95, for Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario, respectively; ~7% higher than the original altimetry data. The root mean squares of errors (RMSE) were 6.07 cm, 4.89 cm, 9.27 cm, 7.71 cm, and 9.88 cm, respectively, for each of the lakes, and ~44% less than differencing with the original altimetry data. Furthermore, the CICA results indicated that the water-level changes in the Great Lakes were significantly correlated with ENSO, with correlation coefficients of 0.5–0.8. The lake levels were ~25 cm higher (~30 cm lower) than normal during EI Niño (La Niña) events.

Time-varying uplift in Svalbard—an effect of glacial changes

SUMMARYWe analyse Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data from Svalbard to understand how uplift rates are controlled by the elastic and viscoelastic response of the solid Earth to changes in glacier mass on annual, interannual, decadal, centennial and millennial timescales. To reveal local patterns of deformation, we filter the GNSS time-series with an enhanced common-mode filtering technique where the non-tidal loading signal is incorporated. This technique reduces the estimated uncertainties for 5-yr time-series from 0.8 to 0.3 mm yr–1. Analysis of the GNSS data with different software–GAMIT, GipsyX, and GINS–produce consistent results that all indicate large temporal variations in uplift. For example, at the Ny-Ålesund GNSS station, uplift varies between 6 and 12 mm yr–1 for different 5-yr periods, and also shows a significant increase in the last 15 yr. We show that this increase is due to climate change-related ice mass loss in Svalbard. We constrain recent glacier retreat on Svalbard using a series of digital elevation models, and then correct the GNSS-derived uplift records for the elastic signal from these ice mass changes. The residual uplift signal is relatively constant, confirming the hypothesis that current ice mass changes exert a strong influence on GNSS observations. The relatively constant record of residual uplift can be used to constrain other geophysical signals such as the viscoelastic response of the solid Earth to ice loading during the Little Ice Age and the Last Glacial Period. We review uplift results from previous viscoelastic modelling studies and show that the residual signal cannot yet be fully explained. Our new uplift results thus motivate the need for new viscoelastic modelling of the glacial isostatic adjustment process in Svalbard.

Glacial isostatic adjustment in the Red Sea: Impact of 3-D Earth structure

Sea-level history in the Red Sea region has commonly been interpreted as an accurate proxy for global mean sea level (GMSL), which can be used to constrain global ice volumes and inform a diverse range of regional paleoclimate studies. Previous modeling work has demonstrated, however, that glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) processes may introduce significant departures from GMSL in this region. The GIA signal is a complex combination of deformational, gravitational, and rotational effects arising from shifting ice and water surface loads and consists of long-wavelength effects superimposed by a short-wavelength signal associated with “continental levering” – a response to local meltwater loading. In this study, we revisit the effects of GIA in the Red Sea region using Earth models characterized by 3-D variations in mantle viscoelastic structure and lithospheric thickness, focusing on the period from Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) to present day. We find that the presence of the Red Sea Rift and low-viscosity upper mantle acts to amplify sea-level rise associated with continental levering, yielding a more pronounced rise for sites toward the center of the Red Sea during deglaciation in comparison to GMSL. In contrast, coastal sites experience a net GIA-induced sea-level fall that acts in opposition to the GMSL rise. Furthermore, while the maximum departure from GMSL occurs close to LGM for northern sites, the GIA signal can peak as late as 14 ka for southern sites. Simulations based on 3-D Earth models tend to show a smaller departure from GMSL than 1-D predictions for most coastal sites, including at the Strait of Bab el-Mandeb at the mouth of the Red Sea, and typically peak at ∼10 m. The opposite is true for sites close to the rift: at these locations the difference between the 1-D and 3-D simulations can reach ∼20 m. We therefore conclude that any mapping from local sea level to GMSL is both location and time dependent and cannot be captured by a simple linear scaling.

Analysis of Earth’s polar motion and length of day trends in comparison with estimates using second degree stokes coefficients from satellite gravimetry

We analyzed the impacts of data span on trend estimates using Earth’s long-term polar motion time series, 1846-present, and using methodologies including singular spectrum analysis, and Panteleev’s filter to mitigate the time series containing transient signals. Our results show that the fluctuations of the mean rotational pole position, the Markowitz wobble, cannot be fully explained by the oceanic and atmospheric excitations. However, there exists plausible similarity with the variations of amplitudes of the Chandler wobble. To explain the abrupt deviation of the mean pole from the previous state after year 2000, we first compute Earth rotation excitations, using the temporal variations of the second-degree Stokes coefficients, C 21 , S 21 , estimated from GRACE, GRACE Follow-On and Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR), 2002–2021. We then compare their trend estimates with that of the Earth’s polar motion, and conclude that the drift of the pole is consistent with the climate-induced mass redistributions within the Earth system during the past two decades. However, the observed trend is not in exact agreement with the prediction values using contemporary glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) process forward models. The analysis of the J 2 variations since 1976 from SLR and the corresponding length of day (LOD) changes, reveals a clear trend reversal around the year 2000. However, the observed J 2 variations can only explain ∼ 5 % of the long-term LOD changes. The remaining decadal signal in the LOD, usually accounted for by the angular momentum exchange at the core-mantle boundary, is observed to be anti-correlated with the Earth surface temperature anomaly. The geophysical explanation on these relationships remains elusive, and necessitates future studies.

The effects of non-Newtonian rheology in the upper mantle on relative sea level change and geodetic observables induced by glacial isostatic adjustment process

SUMMARY Studies of glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) provide important constraints on the Earth's mantle viscosity. Most GIA models assume Newtonian viscosity through the mantle, but laboratory experimental studies of rock deformation, observational studies of seismic anisotropy, and modelling studies of mantle dynamics show that in the upper mantle non-Newtonian viscosity may be important. This study explores the non-Newtonian effects on the GIA induced variations in mantle stress and viscosity and on surface observables including vertical displacement, relative sea level (RSL) and gravity change. The recently updated and fully benchmarked software package CitcomSVE is used for GIA simulations. We adopt the ICE-6G ice deglaciation history, VM5a lower mantle and lithospheric viscosities, and a composite rheology that combines Newtonian and non-Newtonian viscosities for the upper mantle. Our results show that: (1) The mantle stress beneath glaciated regions increases significantly during deglaciation, leading to regionally reduced upper mantle viscosity by more than an order of magnitude. Such effects can be rather localized at the periphery of glaciated regions. However, non-Newtonian effects on far-field mantle viscosity are negligibly small. GIA induced stress is also significant in the lithosphere (∼30 MPa) and lower mantle (∼2 MPa). (2) The predicted RSL changes from non-Newtonian models display distinct features in comparison with the Newtonian model, including more rapid sea level falls associated with the rapid deglaciation at ∼14 000 yr ago followed by a more gradual sea level variation for sites near the centres of formerly glaciated regions, and an additional phase of sea level falls for the last ∼8000 yr for sites at the ice margins. Similar time-dependence associated with the deglaciation is also seen for rate of vertical displacement, suggesting a relatively slow present-day rates of vertical displacement and gravity change. These features can be explained by the non-Newtonian effects associated with a loading event which manifest a fast relaxation stage followed by a relative slow relaxation stage. Our results may provide GIA diagnoses for distinguishing non-Newtonian and Newtonian rheology.

Sea-level trends across The Bahamas constrain peak last interglacial ice melt

During the last interglacial (LIG) period, global mean sea level (GMSL) was higher than at present, likely driven by greater high-latitude insolation. Past sea-level estimates require elevation measurements and age determination of marine sediments that formed at or near sea level, and those elevations must be corrected for glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA). However, this GIA correction is subject to uncertainties in the GIA model inputs, namely, Earth's rheology and past ice history, which reduces precision and accuracy in estimates of past GMSL. To better constrain the GIA process, we compare our data and existing LIG sea-level data across the Bahamian archipelago with a suite of 576 GIA model predictions. We calculated weights for each GIA model based on how well the model fits spatial trends in the regional sea-level data and then used the weighted GIA corrections to revise estimates of GMSL during the LIG. During the LIG, we find a 95% probability that global sea level peaked at least 1.2 m higher than today, and it is very unlikely (5% probability) to have exceeded 5.3 m. Estimates increase by up to 30% (decrease by up to 20%) for portions of melt that originate from the Greenland ice sheet (West Antarctic ice sheet). Altogether, this work suggests that LIG GMSL may be lower than previously assumed.

Uncertainty Estimation in Regional Models of Long‐Term GIA Uplift and Sea Level Change: An Overview

AbstractThis work provides a comparison of four approaches that can be used to describe uncertainty in models of the long‐term glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) process. The four methods range from pessimistic to optimistic representations of GIA uncertainty. Each estimation method is applied to selected one dimensional GIA model predictions and compared with vertical land motion data from Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements across Fennoscandia and North America. The methods are evaluated relative to two main properties: (1) their expected ability to separate non‐GIA from GIA signals and (2) their estimated statistical appropriateness given a specific GIA model and data set. For the first point, non‐GIA signals are considered isolated from the long‐term (millennial time scale) GIA signal at sites where measurement and model uncertainties do not overlap. Across methods, the frequency and accuracy with which non‐GIA signals are separated from GIA signals in GPS data display both consistent similarities and disparities. For the second point, we compare model predictions with rates of vertical land motion and relative sea level change that have been cleaned of non‐GIA signals to determine the most appropriate value of model uncertainty and relate the findings to the four approaches. Best fit inferences suggest that within deglaciation centers, GIA model uncertainty is up to ~2 mm/yr (vertical land motion). Likewise, away from the former ice sheet centers, GIA uncertainty for relative sea level change is inferred to be ~0.3–0.5 mm/yr along the U.S. East Coast and ~0.6–0.8 mm/yr in the North Sea.

Upper mantle density and surface gravity change in Fennoscandia, determined from GRACE monthly data

Precise gravity measurements have been repeatedly observed in Fennoscandia since the 1960-ties, first by relative gravimeters, then by absolute gravimeters, for studying the temporal change of gravity related with the on-going glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA). The results of such studies are vital for understanding GIA processes and tuning GIA and Earth structure models.This study uses monthly repeated data from the twin satellite mission GRACE for 164 months between 2003 and 2016 for estimating the temporal change of surface gravity, its ratio (f) to the land uplift rate as well as the upper mantle density related with the viscous mass flow in the mantle. The maximum negative change of gravity is estimated to −1.8 μGal/yr, and f is estimated to −0.172 ± 0.018 μGal/mm.The solutions for f from the three independent techniques (relative, absolute and satellite gravity observations) were found to agree statistically without significant biases, and they were merged in a joint solution to −0.166 ± 0.004 μGal/mm, corresponding to a mean upper mantle mass flow density of 3402.5 ± 95 kg/m3, which decreases towards the uplift center.

Testing glacial isostatic adjustment models of last-interglacial sea level history in the Bahamas and Bermuda

Part of the spatial variation in the apparent sea-level record of the last interglacial (LIG) period is due to the diverse response of coastlines to glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) processes, particularly where coastlines were close to the Laurentide Ice Sheet during the past two glacial periods. We tested modeled LIG paleo-sea levels on New Providence Island (NPI), Bahamas and Bermuda by investigating emergent coral patch reefs and oolitic/peloidal beach deposits. Corals with closed-system histories collected from patch reefs on NPI have ages of 128-118 ka and ooids/peloids from beach ridges have closed-system ages of 128-116 ka. Elevations of patch reefs indicate a LIG paleo-sea level of at least ∼7 m to ∼9 m above present. Beach ridge sediments indicate paleo-sea levels of ∼5 m to ∼14 m (assuming subsidence, ∼7 m to ∼16 m) above present during the LIG. Some, though not all of these measurements are in good agreement with GIA models of paleo-sea level that have been simulated for the Bahamas. On Bermuda, corals with closed-system histories collected from marine deposits have ages of 126-114 ka. Although coral-bearing marine deposits on Bermuda lack the precise indication of paleo-sea level provided by patch reefs and oolitic beach ridges, these sediments nevertheless provide at least a first-order estimate of paleo-sea level. Paleo-sea level records on Bermuda are consistently lower (∼2 m to ∼7 m) than what GIA models simulate for the LIG. The reason for the reasonable agreement with models for the Bahamas and poor agreement for Bermuda is not understood, but needs further investigation in light of the probability of a higher sea level in the near future.

ITRF2014, Earth Figure Changes, and Geocenter Velocity: Implications for GIA and Recent Ice Melting

AbstractUsing a selection of Global Navigation Satellite System vertical velocities from the latest solution of the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF) ITRF2014, we calculate the degree‐1 and degree‐2 spherical harmonics coefficients (SHC) of the solid Earth figure changes at different dates, with realistic errors that take into account the inhomogeneity of the network. We find that the SHC are globally close to zero except the zonal coefficients, which show values notably larger than those derived from different glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) models and which have tended to increase during the time span of observations. We show that these differences are most probably due to global recent ice melting (RIM). Assuming elastic RIM deformation, we then investigate the Earth's geocenter velocity and the geoid oblateness time evolution (J2‐rate) derived from our SHC estimations. The obtained geocenter velocity reaches 0.9 ± 0.5 mm/year in 2013 with a z‐component of 0.8 ± 0.4 mm/year, which is slightly larger than previous estimations. We compare our J2‐rate estimations with observations. Our estimations show a similar acceleration in J2 after 2000. However, our estimates are notably larger than the observations. This indicates either that the J2‐rate due to GIA processes is lower than expected (as proposed by Nakada et al., 2015, 2016) or that the deformation induced by RIM is not purely elastic, or both. Finally, we show that viscous relaxation or phase transitions in the mantle transition zone may only partly explain this discrepancy. This raises the question of the accuracy of current mass estimations of RIM and GIA models.

Boulder barricades in an emerging hypertidal environment: the case of Ungava Bay, northern Quebec, Canada

ABSTRACTBoulder barricades are poorly documented Holocene coastal landforms of Arctic and Subarctic regions. To understand the terrain factors and coastal processes explaining the occurrences of boulder barricades, we mapped and described these periglacial landforms along the emerging hypertidal coast of Ungava Bay, in Nunavik, northern Quebec, Canada. This study examines the spatial distribution as well as the different types and configurations of boulder barricades, and identifies and discusses the formation processes of these ridges, which are affected by the ongoing glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) process. We distinguish four types of ice-formed boulder ridges: low-tide-, intertidal-, high-tide- and raised boulder barricades. Our results highlight the importance of specific terrain factors (coastal configurations, intertidal and backshore slopes, widths of intertidal zones, susceptibility to coastal erosion) and related coastal processes (ice-pushing and ice-rafting intensified by strong tidal currents), forming these different types of barricades. Due to the GIA process, this coastal region is characterized by a large number of evolutionary sequences (i.e. flights) of boulder barricades, from the intertidal zone to the emerged landscape. These sea-ice-related landforms have significant effects on the coastal geomorphology of the Ungava Bay region by successively enclosing and isolating many ponds and lakes.

SELEN<sup>4</sup> (SELEN version 4.0): a Fortran program for solving the gravitationally and topographically self-consistent sea-level equation in glacial isostatic adjustment modeling

Abstract. We present SELEN4 (SealEveL EquatioN solver), an open-source program written in Fortran 90 that simulates the glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) process in response to the melting of the Late Pleistocene ice sheets. Using a pseudo-spectral approach complemented by a spatial discretization on an icosahedron-based spherical geodesic grid, SELEN4 solves a generalized sea-level equation (SLE) for a spherically symmetric Earth with linear viscoelastic rheology, taking the migration of the shorelines and the rotational feedback on sea level into account. The approach is gravitationally and topographically self-consistent, since it considers the gravitational interactions between the solid Earth, the cryosphere, and the oceans, and it accounts for the evolution of the Earth's topography in response to changes in sea level. The SELEN4 program can be employed to study a broad range of geophysical effects of GIA, including past relative sea-level variations induced by the melting of the Late Pleistocene ice sheets, the time evolution of paleogeography and of the ocean function since the Last Glacial Maximum, the history of the Earth's rotational variations, present-day geodetic signals observed by Global Navigation Satellite Systems, and gravity field variations detected by satellite gravity missions like GRACE (the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment). The “GIA fingerprints” constitute a standard output of SELEN4. Along with the source code, we provide a supplementary document with a full account of the theory, some numerical results obtained from a standard run, and a user guide. Originally, the SELEN program was conceived by Giorgio Spada (GS) in 2005 as a tool for students eager to learn about GIA, and it has been the first SLE solver made available to the community.

Late Quaternary sea-level history of Saipan, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, USA: A test of tectonic uplift and glacial isostatic adjustment models

Abstract In 1979, S. Uyeda and H. Kanamori proposed a tectonic model with two end members of a subduction-boundary continuum: the “Chilean” type (shallow dip of the subducting plate, great thrust events, compression, and uplift of the overriding plate) and a “Mariana” type (steep dip of the subducting plate, no great thrust events, tension, and no uplift). This concept has been used to explain variable rates of Quaternary uplift around the Pacific Rim, yet no uplift rates have been determined for the Mariana Islands themselves, one of the end members in this model. We studied the late Quaternary Tanapag Limestone, which rims much of the eastern and southern coasts of Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands, with elevations of ∼13 m to ∼30 m. Samples from 12 well-preserved corals (Acropora, Porites, and Goniastrea) yielded U-series ages ranging from ca. 134 ka to ca. 126 ka. These ages correlate the emergent reef of the Tanapag Limestone with the last interglacial period, when sea level was several meters above present. Ages and measured reef elevations from the Tanapag Limestone, along with paleo–sea-level data, yield relatively low late Quaternary uplift rates of 0.002–0.19 m/k.y., consistent with the Uyeda-Kanamori model. A review of data from other localities near subduction zones around the Pacific Basin, however, indicates that many coastlines do not fit the model. Uplift rates along the Chilean coast are predicted to be relatively high, but field studies indicate they are low. On some coastlines, relatively high uplift rates are better explained by subduction of seamounts or submarine ridges rather than subduction zone geometry. Despite the low long-term uplift rate on Saipan, the island also hosts an emergent, low-elevation (+3.9–4.0 m) reef with corals in growth position below a notch (+4.2 m). The corals are dated to 3.9–3.1 ka. The occurrence of this young, emergent reef is likely not due to tectonic uplift; instead, it is interpreted to be the result of glacial isostatic adjustment processes after the end of the last glacial period. Our findings are consistent with similar observations on tectonically stable or slowly uplifting islands elsewhere in the equatorial Pacific Ocean and agree with numerical models of a higher-than-present Holocene sea level in this region due to glacial isostatic adjustment processes.

Influence of glacial isostatic adjustment on river evolution along the U.S. mid-Atlantic coast

Long-term river evolution depends partly on crustal deformation, which shapes the topography crossed by rivers. On glacial timescales, ice-sheet growth and decay can produce crustal vertical motion of ∼10 mm/yr resulting from the solid Earth's adjustment to variations in ice and water loads, comparable to tectonically-driven rates in the most rapidly uplifting mountains on Earth. This process of glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) can influence river courses and drainage basins substantially, particularly near former ice margins. We explore the extent to which GIA influenced the evolution of rivers along the United States east coast during the last glacial cycle. We compute gravitationally self-consistent GIA responses that incorporate recent constraints on the Laurentide Ice Sheet history through the last glacial build-up phase, and we connect the predicted variations in topography to abrupt changes in river dynamics recorded in the Hudson, Delaware, Susquehanna, and Potomac Rivers from 40 ka to present. To the extent that increases in sediment transport capacity imply increases in river incision rate, the GIA-driven changes in slope and drainage area are consistent with episodes of erosion and sedimentation observed in the Hudson, Delaware, and Potomac Rivers, but inconsistent with the observed accelerated river incision in the Susquehanna River at 30-14 ka. These analyses add to a growing body of evidence showing that GIA strongly influences river evolution over millennial timescales.

Sea-level rise in Denmark: Bridging local reconstructions and global projections

Between 1850 and 2006 global mean sea level rose by 24 ± 18 cm. It is projected to rise a further 52 ± 21 cm under the Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 scenario, which approximates the carbon emissions reductions of the ‘Paris Agreement’ climate pathway. It is projected to rise 74 ± 28 cm under the RCP8.5 scenario, which represents a ‘business-as-usual’ climate pathway (Box & Colgan 2017). These rates of recent and future sea-level rise are faster than those reconstructed for previous warm intervals, such as the Medieval Climatic Optimum (c. 1000 to 1400 CE) and the Holocene Thermal Maximum (c. 7000 to 3000 BCE) (Gehrels & Shennan 2015). Moreover, palaeo reconstructions indicate a global sea-level sensitivity of two metres per degree of warming (Levermann et al. 2013).
 The forces driving global sea-level change are complex. The global sea-level budget includes the transfer of land ice into the ocean, thermal expansion of seawater, changes in land water storage, and changes in ocean basin volume (Church et al. 2013). At the local scale, the evolving planetary gravity due to shifting water and ice masses, shifting oceanic and atmospheric currents and persistent tectonic and glacial isostatic adjustment processes can also be important. Sea-level changes around the globe are therefore far from uniform (Jevrejeva et al. 2016).
 Here, we highlight the value of combining palaeo reconstructions of sea level, the measured tide gauge record, and projections of future sea level. This allows us to understand local sea-level changes from the recent past in the context of global projections for the near future (0 to 2100 CE). We explore the strong differences in local sea-level histories and future projections at three Danish cities: Skagen and Esbjerg, as they have contrasting glacio-isostatic adjustment histories, and Copenhagen, where we also compare local and global drivers of present-day sea-level rise based on previously published research.

Sea-level fingerprints emergent from GRACE mission data

Abstract. The Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission data have an important, if not revolutionary, impact on how scientists quantify the water transport on the Earth's surface. The transport phenomena include land hydrology, physical oceanography, atmospheric moisture flux, and global cryospheric mass balance. The mass transport observed by the satellite system also includes solid Earth motions caused by, for example, great subduction zone earthquakes and glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) processes. When coupled with altimetry, these space gravimetry data provide a powerful framework for studying climate-related changes on decadal timescales, such as ice mass loss and sea-level rise. As the changes in the latter are significant over the past two decades, there is a concomitant self-attraction and loading phenomenon generating ancillary changes in gravity, sea surface, and solid Earth deformation. These generate a finite signal in GRACE and ocean altimetry, and it may often be desirable to isolate and remove them for the purpose of understanding, for example, ocean circulation changes and post-seismic viscoelastic mantle flow, or GIA, occurring beneath the seafloor. Here we perform a systematic calculation of sea-level fingerprints of on-land water mass changes using monthly Release-06 GRACE Level-2 Stokes coefficients for the span April 2002 to August 2016, which result in a set of solutions for the time-varying geoid, sea-surface height, and vertical bedrock motion. We provide both spherical harmonic coefficients and spatial maps of these global field variables and uncertainties therein (https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/8UC8IR; Adhikari et al., 2019). Solutions are provided for three official GRACE data processing centers, namely the University of Texas Austin's Center for Space Research (CSR), GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (GFZ), and Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), with and without rotational feedback included and in both the center-of-mass and center-of-figure reference frames. These data may be applied for either study of the fields themselves or as fundamental filter components for the analysis of ocean-circulation- and earthquake-related fields or for improving ocean tide models.

Little Islands Recording Global Events: Late Quaternary Sea Level History and Paleozoogeography of Santa Barbara and Anacapa Islands, Channel Islands National Park, California

Marine terraces are common on the Pacific Coast of North America and record interglacial high-sea stands superimposed on either stable or tectonically rising crustal blocks. Despite many years of study of these landforms in southern California, little work on terraces has been conducted on the two smallest of the California Channel Islands, Santa Barbara Island (SBI) and Anacapa Island (ANA). Presented here are new field and laboratory data on the ages, paleontology, and sea level history of marine terraces of these two islands. On both islands, the lowest marine terraces have shoreline angle elevations of ∼11 m above sea level. Amino acid geochronology shows that terrace deposits on both islands host fossils of two ages, one group dating to the ∼120-ka high-sea stand and the other group likely dating to the ∼100-ka high-sea stand. A mix of fossil ages is consistent with the paleontology as well, with SBI in particular showing a faunal assemblage that includes both extralimital southern and southward-ranging species (inferred to be from the ∼120-ka high-sea stand) and extralimital northern and northward-ranging species (inferred to be from the ∼100-ka high-sea stand). Fossil mixing from these two high-sea stands supports the hypothesis that glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) processes have left a strong imprint on the geologic record of sea level history in southern California. Nevertheless, the elevations of these terraces and that of a low terrace on Santa Cruz Island indicate that modeled GIA estimates of paleo-sea level for the peak of the last interglacial period at ∼120 ka could be too high. Future development of models of GIA effects on the Pacific Coast of North America will need to consider geologic records, such as those from SBI and ANA, in refining reconstructions of sea level history.
