Seasonal aridity in the Indo-Pacific Warm Pool during the Late Glacial driven by El Niño-like conditions

Abstract. Island South-East Asia (ISEA) is a highly humid region that hosts the world's largest tropical peat deposits. Most of this peat accumulated only relatively recently during the Holocene, suggesting that the climate was drier and/or more seasonal during earlier times. Although there is evidence for savanna expansion and drier conditions during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, 21 ka BP), the mechanisms behind hydroclimatic changes during the ensuing deglacial period have received much less attention and are poorly understood. Here we use CESM1 climate model simulations to investigate the key drivers behind ISEA climate at the end of the Late Glacial (14.7–11.7 ka BP), with a focus on the last stadial of the Younger Dryas (12 ka BP). We further simulate the preceding Allerød (13 ka BP) interstadial climate and perform a sensitivity experiment to disentangle the climate impacts due to orbital forcing and Late Glacial boundary conditions against a slowdown of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). A transient simulation (TRACE) is used to track the climate seasonality and orbitally driven change over time during the deglaciation into the Holocene. In agreement with proxy evidence, CESM1 simulates overall drier conditions during the Younger Dryas and Allerød. More importantly, ISEA experienced extreme seasonal aridity, in stark contrast to the ever-wet modern climate. We identify that the simulated drying and enhanced seasonality in the Late Glacial is mainly the result of a combination of three factors: (1) large orbital insolation difference on the Northern Hemisphere (NH) between summer and winter, in contrast to the LGM and the present day, (2) a stronger (dry) East Asian winter monsoon caused by a larger meridional thermal gradient and (3) a major reorganization of the Indo-Pacific Walker Circulation with an inverted land-sea circulation and a complete breakdown of deep convection over ISEA in NH winters. The altered atmospheric circulation, sea surface temperature and sea level pressure patterns led to conditions resembling extreme El Niño events in the modern climate and a dissolution of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) over the region. From these results we infer that terrestrial cooling of ISEA and at least a seasonal reversal of land-sea circulation likely played a major role in delaying tropical peat formation until at least the onset of the Holocene period. Our results also suggest that centennial to millennial shifts in AMOC strength modifies the Pacific Ocean hydroclimate via alteration of the position of the ITCZ, and a modulation of the Pacific Walker Circulation. However, Late Glacial AMOC shifts are overall less important than hydroclimate changes due to orbital forcing and boundary condition changes relative to the modern climate.

Hysteresis of the Glacial Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation Controlled by Thermal Feedbacks

AbstractThe multiple equilibrium behavior of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) is related to the mode transition of the AMOC, which played an important role in abrupt glacial climate changes. However, the difference between modern and glacial climates is not well understood. Here, we examined the structure of the multiple equilibria of the AMOC under the modern and glacial climates through hysteresis experiments using an earth system model of intermediate complexity. The glacial AMOC exhibited a shallower AMOC mode but not the off mode, and a narrower range of multiple equilibria than the modern AMOC. This glacial hysteresis behavior occurred associated with a shift of deep water formation due to changes in surface air temperature and sea ice, whereas that of the modern AMOC is attributed to the basin‐scale salinity feedback. These features were commonly found in two glacial simulations with different strengths of the AMOC at the Last Glacial Maximum.

Global Oceanic Overturning Circulation Forced by the Competition between Greenhouse Gases and Continental Ice Sheets during the Last Deglaciation

AbstractThe deglacial change of Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; ~21 ka) has been studied extensively in both reconstructions and model simulations. While reconstructions suggest a shoaling of AMOC at the LGM, the strength of glacial AMOC relative to the modern day remains highly uncertain in both reconstructions and models. Using transient simulations of climate evolution forced by individual deglacial forcings since the LGM, this study shows that the uncertainties in glacial AMOC intensity can be caused by a competition between the elevated glacial Northern Hemisphere (NH) ice sheets and the reduced glacial greenhouse gases, in which the former tend to strengthen the AMOC while the latter play an opposite role. In spite of the dramatic difference of climate between the LGM and the present, the cancellation between the impacts of the two forcings leaves the strength of the glacial AMOC not too different from the modern day (0.5 Sv stronger in our study; 1 Sv ≡ 106 m3 s−1). Furthermore, consistent with theoretical analysis, the response of the AMOC return flow to either forcing is predominantly compensated by an interbasin exchange between the Indo-Pacific (including the Indo-Pacific sector of Southern Ocean) and Atlantic via the Agulhas Current.

Impact of Southern Ocean surface conditions on deep ocean circulation during the LGM: a model analysis

Abstract. Changes in water mass distribution are considered to be a significant contributor to the atmospheric CO2 concentration drop to around 186 ppm recorded during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Yet simulating a glacial Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) in agreement with paleotracer data remains a challenge, with most models from previous Paleoclimate Modelling Intercomparison Project (PMIP) phases showing a tendency to simulate a strong and deep North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) instead of the shoaling inferred from proxy records of water mass distribution. Conversely, the simulated Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) is often reduced compared to its pre-industrial volume, and the Atlantic Ocean stratification is underestimated with respect to paleoproxy data. Inadequate representation of surface conditions, driving deep convection around Antarctica, may explain inaccurately simulated bottom water properties in the Southern Ocean. We investigate here the impact of a range of surface conditions in the Southern Ocean in the iLOVECLIM model using nine simulations obtained with different LGM boundary conditions associated with the ice sheet reconstruction (e.g., changes of elevation, bathymetry, and land–sea mask) and/or modeling choices related to sea-ice export, formation of salty brines, and freshwater input. Based on model–data comparison of sea-surface temperatures and sea ice, we find that only simulations with a cold Southern Ocean and a quite extensive sea-ice cover show an improved agreement with proxy records of sea ice, despite systematic model biases in the seasonal and regional patterns. We then show that the only simulation which does not display a much deeper NADW is obtained by parameterizing the sinking of brines along Antarctica, a modeling choice reducing the open-ocean convection in the Southern Ocean. These results highlight the importance of the representation of convection processes, which have a large impact on the water mass properties, while the choice of boundary conditions appears secondary for the model resolution and variables considered in this study.

Distinguishing Glacial AMOC and Interglacial Non‐AMOC Nd Isotopic Signals in the Deep Western Atlantic Over the Last 1 Myr

AbstractThe global thermohaline circulation plays a major role in regulating global climate, driven by the formation of North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW). ODP Site 1063 on the Bermuda Rise, at the interface of NADW and Southern Ocean‐sourced water, appears an ideal location to study the relationships between ocean circulation and climate. This study reports Nd isotope ratios at Site 1063 that extend to ~1 Ma. The data show Nd isotope values during portions of interglacials that are much lower than modern NADW. However, interglacial Nd isotope values at Site 607, located within the core of NADW, off the abyssal seafloor in the North Atlantic, are consistently similar to modern NADW. In contrast to glacial values, we infer that interglacial Nd isotopes at Site 1063 are not representative of NADW and do not solely record water mass mixing. We conclude that the low Ndisotope ratios reflect regional particle‐seawater exchange as a consequence of input of freshly ground bedrock from the Canadian shield, which is eroded into the North Atlantic during major ice sheet retreats. The result is a deep, thin, and regionally constrained layer of seawater tagged with this anomalous low Nd isotope signature that is unrepresentative of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). We suggest that a benthic nepheloid layer, whose development is linked to the behavior of a deep‐recirculating gyre system, regulated by the interaction between the Gulf Stream and the deep western boundary current, facilitates the periodic masking of the Nd isotope signature of the North Atlantic AMOC end‐member in this region at these depths.

Assessing the potential capability of reconstructing glacial Atlantic water masses and AMOC using multiple proxies in CESM

Reconstructing the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) is essential for understanding glacial-interglacial climate change and the carbon cycle. However, despite many previous studies, uncertainties remain regarding the glacial water mass distributions in the Atlantic and the AMOC intensity. Here we use an isotope enabled ocean model with multiple geotracers (δ13C, εNd, 231Pa/230Th, δ18O and Δ14C) and idealized water tracers to study the potential constraints on LGM ocean circulation from multiple proxies. Our model suggests that the glacial Atlantic water mass distribution can be accurately constrained by the air-sea gas exchange signature of water masses (δ13CAS), but εNd might overestimate the North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) percentage in the deep Atlantic probably because of the boundary source of Nd. A sensitivity experiment with an AMOC of similar geometry but much weaker strength suggests that the correct AMOC geometry is more important than the AMOC strength for simulating the observed glacial δ13C and εNd distributions. The kinematic tracer 231Pa/230Th is sensitive to AMOC intensity, but the interpretation might be complicated by the AMOC geometry and AABW transport changes during the LGM. δ18O in the benthic foraminifera (δ18Oc) from the Florida Straits provides a consistent measure of the upper ocean boundary current in the model, which potentially provides an unambiguous method to reconstruct glacial AMOC intensity. Finally, we propose that the moderate difference between AMOC intensity at LGM and PD, if any, is caused by the competition of the responses to CO2 forcing and continental ice sheet forcing.

Surface Constraints on the Depth of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation: Southern Ocean versus North Atlantic

AbstractPaleoclimate proxy evidence suggests that the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) was about 1000 m shallower at the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) compared to the present. Yet it remains unresolved what caused this glacial shoaling of the AMOC, and many climate models instead simulate a deeper AMOC under LGM forcing. While some studies suggest that Southern Ocean surface buoyancy forcing controls the AMOC depth, others have suggested alternatively that North Atlantic surface forcing or interior diabatic mixing plays the dominant role. To investigate the key processes that set the AMOC depth, here we carry out a number of MITgcm ocean-only simulations with surface forcing fields specified from the simulation results of three coupled climate models that span much of the range of glacial AMOC depth changes in phase 3 of the Paleoclimate Model Intercomparison Project (PMIP3). We find that the MITgcm simulations successfully reproduce the changes in AMOC depth between glacial and modern conditions simulated in these three PMIP3 models. By varying the restoring time scale in the surface forcing, we show that the AMOC depth is more strongly constrained by the surface density field than the surface buoyancy flux field. Based on these results, we propose a mechanism by which the surface density fields in the high latitudes of both hemispheres are connected to the AMOC depth. We illustrate the mechanism using MITgcm simulations with idealized surface forcing perturbations as well as an idealized conceptual geometric model. These results suggest that the AMOC depth is largely determined by the surface density fields in both the North Atlantic and the Southern Ocean.

Roles of Sea Ice–Surface Wind Feedback in Maintaining the Glacial Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation and Climate

AbstractDuring glacial periods, climate varies between two contrasting modes, the interstadials and stadials. These climate changes are often associated with drastic reorganizations of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC). Previous studies highlight the important role of sea ice in maintaining contrasting modes of the AMOC through its insulating effect on the oceanic heat flux and the buoyancy flux (sea ice–buoyancy flux feedback); however, the effect of feedback from the atmosphere remains unclear. Here, the effect of sea ice–surface wind interactions over the North Atlantic Ocean on the AMOC is explored. For this purpose, results from comprehensive atmosphere–ocean coupled general circulation models (AOGCMs) are analyzed. Then, sensitivity experiments are conducted with the atmospheric component of the AOGCM. Last, to explore the impact of modifications in surface winds induced by sea ice on the maintenance of the AMOC, partially coupled experiments are conducted with the AOGCMs. Experiments show that the expansion of sea ice associated with a weakening of the AMOC reduces surface winds by suppressing the oceanic heat flux and increasing the atmospheric static stability. This wind anomaly then causes a weakening of the wind-driven ocean salt transport to the northern North Atlantic and maintains the weak AMOC, therefore working as a positive feedback. It is shown that, together with the sea ice–buoyancy flux and sea ice–surface wind feedback, changes in sea ice and oceanic heat flux sustain the contrasting modes of the AMOC. These results may provide useful information for interpreting the differences in the self-sustained internal oscillations of the AMOC produced by recent AOGCMs.

Strength and geometry of the glacial Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation

During the Last Glacial Maximum, the pattern of Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation was different from today. A combination of sediment chemistry and a scavenging model suggests that the glacial circulation was shallower and at least as vigorous as today. The strength and geometry of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation is tightly coupled to climate on glacial–interglacial and millennial timescales1, but has proved difficult to reconstruct, particularly for the Last Glacial Maximum2. Today, the return flow from the northern North Atlantic to lower latitudes associated with the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation reaches down to approximately 4,000 m. In contrast, during the Last Glacial Maximum this return flow is thought to have occurred primarily at shallower depths. Measurements of sedimentary 231Pa/230Th have been used to reconstruct the strength of circulation in the North Atlantic Ocean3,4, but the effects of biogenic silica on 231Pa/230Th-based estimates remain controversial5. Here we use measurements of 231Pa/230Th ratios and biogenic silica in Holocene-aged Atlantic sediments and simulations with a two-dimensional scavenging model to demonstrate that the geometry and strength of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation are the primary controls of 231Pa/230Th ratios in modern Atlantic sediments. For the glacial maximum, a simulation of Atlantic overturning with a shallow, but vigorous circulation and bulk water transport at around 2,000 m depth best matched observed glacial Atlantic 231Pa/230Th values. We estimate that the transport of intermediate water during the Last Glacial Maximum was at least as strong as deep water transport today.

The thermal threshold of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation and its control by wind stress forcing during glacial climate

Paleo proxy data suggest that the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) was shallower and weaker at the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) than at present. In this study, we have identified the existence of a thermal threshold of the AMOC which may explain why many coupled climate models fail to simulate the weaker AMOC during the LGM. By using results obtained from a coupled climate model and conducting sensitivity simulations with an ocean general circulation model, we found that the sudden transition from the present‐day AMOC to the weaker glacial AMOC occurs when we gradually change the degree of surface cooling from present‐day to glacial conditions. This result is related to response of deep convection in the northern North Atlantic Ocean; moderate cooling enhances deep convection whereas sufficient cooling results in total covering of sea ice there and suppression of deep convection. The findings indicate the existence of a thermal threshold controlling the AMOC, where the present‐day‐type AMOC suddenly shifts to the weaker glacial AMOC once the surface cooling exceeds this threshold. We also demonstrate that wind stress forcing plays a critical role in controlling the value of the thermal threshold. Our study suggests that slight differences in the degree of surface cooling or wind stress forcing for LGM simulations could lead to the very different response of the AMOC during the LGM as reported in previous LGM simulations.

Enhanced Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation supports the Last Glacial Inception

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is a key feature of the climate system. However, its role during climate change is still poorly constrained particularly during an Interglacial to Glacial climate transition and the associated global cooling. We present here the first reconstruction of the evolution of the vertical structure of the rate of the AMOC from the Last Interglaciation to the subsequent glaciation (128,000–60,000 years ago) based on sedimentary ( 231Pa/ 230Th) records. We show a deep AMOC during the interglacial warmth Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5.5 and a shallower glacial one during glacial MIS 4. The change between these two patterns occurred mostly during the glacial inception, i.e. the transition from MIS 5.5 to MIS 5.4. Our data show that AMOC was enhanced during this latter transition as a consequence of a large increase of the overturning rate of the Intermediate Waters, above 2500 m. We suggest that this AMOC pattern required a reinforced Gulf Stream-North Atlantic Current system that ultimately supported ice-sheet growth by providing heat and moisture to the Northern high latitudes. From MIS 5.4 to MIS 5.1, the AMOC was broadly continuous below 2000 m and supported periods of ice-sheet growth. As a result, a glacial AMOC is triggered at the beginning of MIS 4 due to the extension of ice-sheet and the subsequent reorganization of deep-water formation. This study highlights the role of intermediate waters as a major player during climate change.

Assessing the sensitivity of the North Atlantic Ocean circulation to freshwater perturbation in various glacial climate states

A striking characteristic of glacial climate in the North Atlantic region is the recurrence of abrupt shifts between cold stadials and mild interstadials. These shifts have been associated with abrupt changes in Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) mode, possibly in response to glacial meltwater perturbations. However, it is poorly understood why they were more clearly expressed during Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS3, ~60–27 ka BP) than during Termination 1 (T1, ~18–10 ka BP) and especially around the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, ~23–19 ka BP). One clue may reside in varying climate forcings, making MIS3 and T1 generally milder than LGM. To investigate this idea, we evaluate in a climate model how ice sheet size, atmospheric greenhouse gas concentration and orbital insolation changes between 56 ka BP (=56k), 21k and 12.5k affect the glacial AMOC response to additional freshwater forcing. We have performed three ensemble simulations with the earth system model LOVECLIM using those forcings. We find that the AMOC mode in the mild glacial climate type (56k and 12.5k), with deep convection in the Labrador Sea and the Nordic Seas, is more sensitive to a constant 0.15 Sv freshwater forcing than in the cold type (21k), with deep convection mainly south of Greenland and Iceland. The initial AMOC weakening in response to freshwater forcing is larger in the mild type due to an early shutdown of Labrador Sea deep convection, which is completely absent in the 21k simulation. This causes a larger fraction of the freshwater anomaly to remain at surface in the mild type compared to the cold type. After 200 years, a weak AMOC is established in both climate types, as further freshening is compensated by an anomalous salt advection from the (sub-)tropical North Atlantic. However, the slightly fresher sea surface in the mild type facilitates further weakening of the AMOC, which occurs when a surface buoyancy threshold (−0.6 kg m−3 surface density anomaly to the 56k reference state) is stochastically crossed in the Nordic Seas. While described details are model-specific, our results imply that a more northern location of deep convection sites during milder glacial times may have amplified frequency and amplitude of abrupt climate shifts.

Stability of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation in the Last Glacial Maximum climate

The stability of the glacial Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation is examined using a coupled model of intermediate complexity. Two slightly different climatic states are generated. One has a southward overturning freshwater transport at the southern border of the Atlantic basin, the other a northward transport. Pulse experiments with varying magnitude always result in a collapsed circulation in case of a southward transport, while the overturning recovers in case of a northward transport. In the latter case recovery is due to a positive salinity‐overturning feedback, which strengthens the remnant circulation cell that exists in the ‘collapsed’ state. This is amplified by advection by wind‐driven currents and a southward ITCZ shift. The glacial circulation is more easily perturbed than the modern and restoring timescales are considerably longer, matching the duration of Heinrich events.

Fast advective recovery of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation after a Heinrich event

Ice core reconstructions and ocean sediment analysis have revealed that the climate of the last glacial period was highly variable with rapid stadial‐interstadial transitions and glacial meltwater pulses (Heinrich events) modulating the climate evolution in the Northern and Southern hemispheres. Heinrich events had the potential to weaken the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) substantially. Mechanisms that led to the resumption of the AMOC after such events have not been fully disentangled yet. Here a coupled atmosphere‐ocean–sea ice model of intermediate complexity is employed to identify important negative climate feedbacks that contribute to a fast recovery of the glacial AMOC. Shortly after the AMOC collapse, thermal processes weaken the stratification in the northern North Atlantic making it more vulnerable to perturbations. Eventually, 300–400 years after the main collapse of the AMOC the mean advection of salinity anomalies within the horizontal gyres generates an unstable stratification that will be homogenized through the resumption of convective activity. Eventually, isopycnal slopes in the North Atlantic are readjusted, thereby reinitiating the large‐scale meridional overturning flow.
