Making themselves at home: Support needs of older Germans in Australia.

This paper explores the experiences of older German Australians, with a focus on their support needs and preferences in later life. Data were collected through qualitative semi-structured interviews. Data analysis incorporated a systematic concept matrix approach to content analysis. The findings of the study indicate that older German Australians have adapted well to the Australian way of life. Their high English language proficiency allowed them to source services without the barrier of language often reported in studies of older migrants. They did not show high interest in ethno-specific services. Few studies have been conducted on older German Australians, and none focuses specifically on their experience of ageing in Australia. This study contributes to the body of knowledge on older migrants and, specifically, on those for whom language is not necessarily a major obstacle to obtaining aged care information or services.

Attitudes towards German Immigration in South Australia in the post-Second World War Period, 1947-60

Considering the reaction against Germans in Australia during and after the First World War, it is surprising that German immigration to Australia was permitted again soon after the Second World War and even subsidised by the Australian government. Just seven years after the second war fought with Germany within a generation, Australia signed a five-year agreement to permit Germans to immigrate. This article examines the extent of the Australian public's acceptance of this policy during the period from 1947 to 1960. It concentrates on the state of South Australia where some of the earliest settlers in the colony had been of German origin, where their behaviour and achievements had been praised in historical writings about the colony, and where German immigrants may, therefore, have been viewed more positively. Yet there was some suspicion towards and discrimination against Germans in South Australia after 1945. Negative stereotypes of Germans were apparent in comments made by politicians and in press reports. However, these fears were minor and faded even further when more Germans arrived in Australia.

Dilemmas of Immigration — Australian Expectations, Migrant Responses: Germans in Melbourne

The paper argues that from the early days of white settlement Australia's racial and ethnic relations operated with two distinct but fundamentally related concepts — assimilation and exclusivism. Both policies have been implemented in regard to German immigrants at various times in Australia's history. The settlement policies of the post- World War II period progressed from a somewhat virulent assimila tionist approach accompanied by an active interest in the concept and practice of naturalisation, to a policy of integration/interactionism identified with a less strident approach to the naturalisation issue, arriv ing eventually at the concept or ideology of multiculturalism and citizenship as propounded in contemporary Australia. A synoptic history of German immigration into South Australia and Victoria offers evidence of a long tradition of non-assimilation; cultural and social segregation being more pronounced and visible in rural areas and in the pre-war era. Although during the last 30 years Germans in Australia have remained a culturally distinct category of people, their geographical dispersion, a low public profile, a relatively favoured posi tion in the economic structure, and a high naturalisation rate have con tributed not only to the assumption that German immigrants are assimilated but also to the creation of the naturalisation/assimilation equation.
