ROMANO GUARDINIS THEOLOGISCHE KRITIK DES MODERNEN ZEITALTERS

Summary The name of Romano Guardini, the German theologian of Italian origin, is not often mentioned in the contemporary discussions of modernity and postmodernity. This is rather strange, since most of his works are attempts to deal with the question of the difficult relationship between modernity and the christian faith. In order to have an objective frame of reference with which to judge the contemporary views of the world and the person, Guardini creates a method which he calls “katholische Weltanschauung”. It is essentially a theological understanding of the world: The ultimate frame of reference of this method is God, and more specifically Christ and his Church as mediators of the Truth. Only if one looks with the eyes of Christ, one does have the possibility of a clear and true vision of the world. Guardini uses this method to formulate a critique of modernity in confrontation with the Revelation. Reason for hope: the systematic theology of Wolfhart Pannenberg

The German Lutheran thinker Wolfhart Pannenberg has for decades been recognized as one of the most creative and influential contemporary European Protestant theologians, and his theological programme has become a subject of intense debate. Pannenberg is now preparing for publication of his long-awaited systematic theology, of which the first volume (in German) has just appeared. Stanley Grenz has had access to the complete manuscript of the forthcoming volumes, and has had the opportunity to discuss their contents with Pannenberg himself. This places him in the unique position of being able to provide English readers with the first account of the final form that Pannenberg's thought has taken. Grenz brings to this task a thorough knowledge of Pannenberg's voluminous earlier publications and the result is a guide to the German theologian's entire systematic theology.

Prospects: Solidarity Within the Firm

Since the speakers have already been asked to condense their papers for a 15-minute presentation, any recapitulation seems presumptuous. We may find ourselves with a caricature at best, or an all too simplistic summary which does not do justice to the excellence of the contribu? tions. However, with this understanding and the hope that I will not go down in history as the microchip of microeconomics, I humbly approach my task. I will also concentrate more on the prospects for the future which were discussed by the participants after the presentations. As you recall from the papers themselves, Henry Briefs of George? town University considered the scholarly contributions of the German theologian, Heinrich Pesch, of the Society of Jesus; Herbert Simon, Carnegie-Mellon psychologist; and Oliver Williamson, economist from the University of Pennsylvania. This triad has improved the understand? ing of modern persons at work, emphasizing their special skills and needs and how these can best be developed in a societal context through gain seeking at a microeconomic level. Pesch's emphasis was on the importance of work to man's human, social nature, whereby his material well-being (including spiritual, cultural, and intellectual pursuits) is achieved under conditions of scar? city and specialization requiring coordination, cooperation, and exchange through intelligent (i.e., cost effective) and responsible (i.e., moral) choices subject to authority and leadership. These reciprocal contributions add up to welfare and human solidarity. Simon introduced problems of information lags and complexity which increase uncertainty and rearrange bargaining power, causing opportunistic behavior. Williamson's contribution studied comparative institutions with two complementary models applicable to our current concern with the individual firm: (1) peer group decision making, and (2) hierarchical authority. We concluded that peer participation under authority (or leadership, as it later came out in our discussion) is the best approach for the solidarity and cooperation needed to achieve social justice in the work place.

REPLY TO CRITES AND HAUERWAS

Stephen Crites and Stanley Hauerwas have richly honored me by taking my comments on their views with such seriousness. It is gratifying though not at all surprising that neither of them looks for cheap victories nor pursues implausible reconciliations of important disagreements. I thank them for these attitudinal benefactions as well as for their instructive comments on my views. Would that my besetting modesty allowed me to accept Crites's unilateral nomination of me for associate membership in the Royal German Theological Union! It appears that the main points at issue are these: (I) What sort of distinction is to be drawn between fact-assertive (assertoric) and expressive modes of cognitivity (understood: for Christian faith and theology)? (II) What about metaphysics? (III) Truth v. Truthfulness. (The understanding cited in I applies to II and III.)

The Educational Evangelist of Eisleben: Martin Luther (1483-1546)

The quincentenary of birth of Martin Luther, November 10, 1483, is an occasion for conferences, publications, and commemorations in Lutheran countries and elsewhere. Although focus is generally on religious reforms inaugurated by German theologian, attention is also being given to his impact on such areas as political thought and education. While much scholarly activity has been going on, celebrations have not been free from exaggeration, as in case of honors heaped upon Luther's views on freedom of religion. What is appropriate for analysis at this time is Luther's thinking and activities in education in Germany, as well as their influence in that and other countries. Some writers have regarded Luther as an educator of supreme stature. Onycha, ingredient of the ancient jewish incense: An attempt at identification

The composition of the ancient holy incense is given to us in Exodus 30:34/5 of the Jewish Publication Society Bible as follows: "And the Lord said to Moses: Take unto thee sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum; these sweet spices with pure frankincense, of each there shall be a like weight. And thou shalt make of it incense, a perfume, after the art of the perfumer, seasoned with salt, pure and holy." With rare exceptions, spices and components of incense are of vegetable origin. With regard to the Tabernacle incense, most scholars agree that the term "stacte" is of Latin and Greek origin, and that stacte represents myrrh, the oleoresin from various species of Commiphora trees, indigenous to northwest Africa and Arabia. Myrrh occurs as yellowish to reddish-brown tears, with vanilla-like odor. The French Bible expert Rashi (acronym for Rabbi Solomon ben Isaac, 1045-1105), whom the German theologian Johann Buxtorf (1564-1629), himself a leading commentator on Bible and Talmud, called "consummatissimus ille theologiae judaicae doctor," equates "stacte" with the Hebrew "nataph," meaning to drip. This meaning is identical with that of the Latin "stacte" and the Greek derivation "stact6," all suggesting the bleeding of the substance from the tree.

Schleiermacher's sermon at Nathanael's grave

An analysis of the sermon explores this most personal statement of Schleiermacher's attitude toward death and reveals the consonance between his theological reflections and the substance of his life.

After a long discussion among theologians, which lasted a little more than a century and which ended with St. Thomas, William of Paris could testify (at the beginning of the 14th century) that all were agreed in considering the sacramental character as a quality. Although there were discrepancies overwhich subspecies of quality character belongs to, the opinion of St. Thomas little by little imposed itself: it is a potency. But he had contributed one more datum: character could be considered, also, as a participation of the Priesthood of Christ. If we consider that Christ is constituted Priest through the same hypostatic union, to participate of the Priesthood of Christ, through the character, must mean so much as to participate mysteriously of the hypostatic union. This is the thesis presented by Scheeben in the 19th century. The German theologian also added that to receive the character would mean, for the same reason, a certain elevation or ennoblement of the person or hypostasis of the man receiving the character. This seems evident, because in order to make this new supernatural accident -which is character- exist, the natural esse must also be intensified in a mysterious way, as Ocariz puts it, and consequently the person, the remote subject of the character -since the practical intellect continues to be the proximate subject of character- is ennobled. It would suppose, assuming that our thesis is true, new real supernatural relations with God: the character would involve a change in the relation of the creature with the Creator: from esse ad Deum it would be come esse ad Patrem (naturally, in Filio).

Geschichte der Medicinischen Wissenschaften in Deutschland

August Hirsch, best known for his classic study on historical-geographical pathology, also wrote a history of medicine in Germany, published in 1893, shortly before his death. This text, never translated, is now reprinted as part of a 24-volume series which covers the history of scholarship in Germany and which includes both liberal arts and the natural sciences, and ranges from history of German philosophy or theology to history of mineralogy, zoology, or medicine. All but one of the volumes were originally published in the 19th century. The present volume will interest medical historians. It offers a concentrated view of the middle European medical scene, particularly during the 17th, 18th, and first half of the 19th century. Important non-Germanic figures, predominantly Swiss, Dutch, English, and French physicians, receive considerable attention, but the emphasis is mostly on the central European area. A New German Theological Movement

With the publication in 1961 of Offenbarung als Geschichte, the first supplementary volume of the German periodical Kerygma und Dogma, it has become evident that a new theological movement is gaining momentum amongst some of the younger theologians of Germany. Each of those writing for this booklet supports, from the vantage point of his own particular specialty, the thesis that revelation is mediated only through historical events: Wolfhart Pannenberg as a systematic theologian, Rolf Rendtorff as an Old Testament exegete, Ulrich Wilckens as a New Testament scholar, and Trutz Rendtorff as a Church historian. Since 1951 these and others who were then doctoral students at Heidelberg have been meeting regularly to formulate the basic ideology found in this booklet. Wolfhart Pannenberg has become the chief spokesman for this new movement, not because he was originally responsible for the basic approach to revelation as history, but because as one whose specialty is dogmatics, he provides the over-all synthesis for the historical and exegetical work of the others.

How Progressive is German Catholicism?

That the question should protrude out of English Catholicism and start prodding about in German Catholicism seems like irreverence, biting the hand that fed, or just plain scandalmongery. The revival of theological interest amongst English Catholics owes, after all, much to the activity of German-speaking theologians like Rahner and Kung. Here, we have said, is a Catholicism that takes theology seriously. The German bishops brought this activity in their train to the Council in the form of theological advisers. They were very well advised theologically. The Council was for German Catholicism something like a Trade Fair; its stands were stocked with the latest models of German theology, and the bishops quite overreached themselves in attempting to express it.Meanwhile back in Germany there was considerable surprise in many quarters that the German episcopate should be, as Simplicissimus put it in a front page cartoon, marching like a mitred army on Rome behind its two cardinals. The weekly magazine Der Spiegel rummaged through its considerable files and produced a number on Cardinal Frings setting out dialectically his record as a conservative churchman in Cologne, and his activity as leader of the progressives at the Council. How were the two conflicting images to be reconciled? Certainly the German Church can never be the same again. Things have been said by its leaders in Rome which will have to be said in Germany.
