Validation of geostationary environment monitoring spectrometer (GEMS), TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI), and Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite Nadir Mapper (OMPS) using pandora measurements during GEMS Map of Air Pollution (GMAP) field campaign

This study presents the validation of total column ozone (TCO) data retrieved from the Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) against ground-based Pandora spectrometer observations during the GEMS Map of Air Pollution (GMAP) campaign from November 2020 to January 2021 in Seosan, South Korea. To evaluate the accuracy of the Pandora TCO measurements obtained during the campaign period, all Pandora instruments were installed at the Seosan supersite for intercomparison analysis. Subsequently, the instruments were relocated to four sites for direct sunlight measurements. The Pandora instruments exhibited a high degree of consistency with an average difference of 0.5 ± 1.0 DU. This study demonstrated that accurate comparison of ground-based ozone measurements with satellite ozone measurements depended on the threshold values set for the spatial and temporal alignment of the two datasets and the size of the satellite footprint and viewing angle. The comparison of the GEMS, TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI), and Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite Nadir Mapper (OMPS) satellite TCO with the Pandora TCO showed high agreement across measurements. However, a distinct downward trend was observed in the Mean Bias (MB) for GEMS from December–January, indicating an issue with the GEMS Level 1C irradiance. The validation using hourly Pandora data demonstrated GEMS capability to monitor daily ozone variations but with a bias of approximately −1% to −2.6% compared with that of Pandora.

Enhancing ozone nowcasting over East Asia using a data-to-data translation approach with observations from a geostationary environment monitoring spectrometer

The degradation of air quality caused by excessive anthropogenic ozone (O3) concentrations negatively affects ecosystems and the atmosphere. To monitor this issue, the Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) aboard the Geostationary Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite (GK)-2B provides ozone products over Asia-centered circular regions based on the ozone algorithm derived from representative polar-orbit atmospheric environmental satellites. In this study, we developed a few-hour GEMS O3 nowcasting model using data-to-data (D2D) translation with a conditional generative adversarial network. This model is based on hourly GEMS O3 time-series products and can be used to predict ozone concentrations. The D2D model underwent training and testing employing paired input and output datasets of GEMS O3, with data collected from March 22, 2020, to June 21, 2020, and from March 22, 2021, to June 18, 2021, respectively. The resulting D2D ozone nowcasting model was used to determine ozone concentrations in time zones where GEMS O3 products were unavailable. Test results of the D2D model demonstrated excellent statistical scores, including a bias of 2.162 Dobson Units (DU, where 1 DU corresponds to 2.687 × 1016 molecules/cm2), root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 5.606 DU, a correlation coefficient (CC) of 0.994 for 1-h prediction, a bias of 1.421 DU, RMSE of 5.903 DU, and CC of 0.992 for 2-h prediction, and a bias of 1.169 DU, RMSE of 6.797 DU, and CC of 0.988 for 3-h prediction. Despite the dataset pairing and number limitations, the D2D prediction model accurately forecasted GEMS O3 within 3 h in East Asia.

Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) polarization characteristics and correction algorithm

Abstract. The Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) is the first geostationary earth orbit (GEO) environmental instrument, onboard the Geostationary Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite–2B (GEO-KOMPSAT-2B) launched on 19 February 2020, and is measuring reflected radiance from the earth's surface and atmosphere system in the range of 300–500 nm in the ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) region. The radiometric response of a satellite sensor that measures the UV–Vis wavelength region can depend on the polarization states of the incoming light. To reduce the sensitivity due to polarization, many current low earth orbit (LEO) satellites are equipped with a scrambler to depolarize the signals or a polarization measurement device (PMD) that simultaneously measures the polarization state of the atmosphere, then utilizes it for a polarization correction. However, a novel polarization correction algorithm is required since GEMS does not have a scrambler or a PMD. Therefore, this study aims to improve the radiometric accuracy of GEMS by developing a polarization correction algorithm optimized for GEMS that simultaneously considers the atmosphere's polarization state and the instrument's polarization sensitivity characteristics. The polarization factor and axis were derived by the preflight test on the ground as a function of wavelengths, showing a polarization sensitivity of more than 2 % at some specific wavelengths. The polarization states of the atmosphere are configured as a look-up table (LUT) using the Vector Linearized Discrete Ordinate Radiative-Transfer model (VLIDORT). Depending on the observation geometry and atmospheric conditions, the observed radiance spectrum can include a polarization error of 2 %. The performance of the proposed GEMS polarization algorithm was assessed using synthetic data, and the errors due to polarization were found to be larger in clear regions than in cloudy regions. After the polarization correction, polarization errors were reduced close to zero for almost all wavelengths, including the wavelength regions with high peaks and curvatures in the GEMS polarization factor, which sufficiently demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed polarization correction algorithm. From the actual observation data after the launch of GEMS, the diurnal variation for the spatial distribution of polarization error was confirmed to be minimum at noon and maximum at sunrise/sunset. This can be used to improve the quality of GEMS measurements, the first geostationary environmental satellite, and then contribute to the retrieved accuracy of various Level-2 products, such as trace gases and aerosols in the atmosphere.

Effects of meteorological conditions on the mixing height of Nitrogen dioxide in China using new-generation geostationary satellite measurements and machine learning

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) plays a critical role in terms of air quality, human health, ecosystems, and its impact on climate change. While the crucial roles of the vertical structure of NO2 have been acknowledged for some time, there is currently limited knowledge about this aspect in China. The Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) is the world's first geostationary satellite instrument capable of measuring the hourly columnar amount of NO2. The study presented here introduces the use of mixing height for NO2 in the atmosphere. A thorough examination of spatiotemporal variations in the mixing height of NO2 was conducted using data from both the GEMS and ground-based air quality monitoring networks. A random forest model based on machine learning techniques was utilized to examine how meteorological parameters affect the mixing height of NO2. The results of our study reveal a notable seasonal fluctuation in the mixing height of NO2, with the highest values observed during the summer and the lowest values during the winter. Additionally, there was an increasing diurnal trend from early morning to mid-afternoon. Moreover, the study discovered elevated NO2 mixing heights in the dry regions of northern China. The results also indicated a positive correlation between the mixing height of NO2 and temperature and wind speed, while negative associations were found with relative humidity and air pressure. The machine learning model's predicted NO2 mixing heights were in good agreement with the measurement-based outcomes, as evidenced by a coefficient of determination (R2) value of 0.96 (0.84 for the 10-fold cross-validation). These findings emphasize the noteworthy influence of meteorological variables on the vertical distribution of NO2 in the atmosphere and enhance our comprehension of the three-dimensional variations in NO2.

Reliability Analysis Based on Air Quality Characteristics in East Asia Using Primary Data from the Test Operation of Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS)

Air pollutants adversely affect human health, and thus a global improvement in air quality is urgent. A Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) was mounted on the geostationary Chollian 2B satellite in 2020 to observe the spatial distribution of air pollution, and sequential observations have been released since July 2022. The reliability of GEMS must be analyzed because it is the first payload on the geostationary Earth orbit satellite to observe trace gases. This study analyzed the initial results of GEMS observations such as the aerosol optical depth and vertical column densities (VCD) of ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and formaldehyde (HCHO), and compared them with previous studies. The correlation coefficient of O3 ranged from 0.90 (Ozone Monitoring Instrument, OMI) to 0.97 (TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument, TROPOMI), whereas that of NO2 ranged from 0.47 (winter, OMI and OMPS) to 0.83 (summer, TROPOMI). GEMS yielded a higher VCD of NO2 than that of OMI and TROPOMI. Based on the sources of O3 and NO2, GEMS observed the maximum VCD at a different time (3–4 h) to that of the ground observations. Overall, GEMS can make observations several times a day and is a potential tool for atmospheric environmental analysis.

Long-term observations of NO2 using GEMS in China: Validations and regional transport

In 2019, South Korea launched the Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) to observe trace gases with an hourly temporal resolution. Compared to previous payloads on polar-orbiting satellites, the GEMS payload has significant advantages in detecting the diurnal variation characteristics of NO2. However, there is still a lack of ground-based validations regarding the overall accuracy of GEMS in the Chinese region. In this study, we conducted a systematic ground validation of GEMS NO2 data in China for the first time. We validated the accuracy of GEMS NO2 data in four typical pollution regions in China, namely the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region (JJJ), the Yangtze River Delta region (YRD), the Pearl River Delta region (PRD), and the Sichuan Basin region (SCB), based on MAX-DOAS and CNEMC data. The averaged correlations using the two datasets for validation were 0.81 and 0.57, respectively, indicating a high level of accuracy for the data in China. Using the GEMS seasonal averaged NO2 data, we studied the distribution of NO2 levels in the four regions. We found that the highest NO2 in all four regions occurred during winter with concentrations of 1.84 × 1016 molecules cm−2, 1.59 × 1016 molecules cm−2, 1.58 × 1016 molecules cm−2 and 9.47 × 1015 molecules cm−2, respectively. The distribution of NO2 was closely related to the terrain. Additionally, we observed a significant underestimation issue with TROPOMI, exceeding 30 % in many regions. Based on MAX-DOAS, we investigated the vertical distribution of NO2 in the four regions and found that NO2 was mainly concentrated below 0.5 km. with the HNU station having the lowest concentration, averaging only 2.12 ppb, which was approximately 41 % of the highest concentration recorded at the CQ station. Furthermore, we conducted a study on regional and cross-regional transport using a combination of MAX-DOAS and GEMS data. We found that the transport flux of NO2 could increase by over 500 % within 1 h, making a significant contribution to local NO2 concentrations. The joint observations of GEMS and MAX-DOAS will provide reliable data support for NO2 research and control in China, making a substantial contribution to environmental protection and sustainable development.

Synoptic meteorological conditions and contributing factors to air quality during the SIJAQ campaign

The Satellite Integrated Joint Monitoring of Air Quality (SIJAQ) field campaign was conducted from October 10 to November 25, 2021, to assess air quality across the Korean Peninsula and validate the results of the Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) employing remote sensing, modeling, and satellite, aircraft, and ground measurements. To integrate all measurements collected during the campaign, synoptic features across the Korean Peninsula were analyzed. We identified cyclones and anticyclones by tracing weather charts and divided the campaign into five periods (P1 to P5): P1 - Sustained marine stagnation (October 10–28, 2021), P2 - Transitional stagnant high (October 29–November 7, 2021), P3 - Continental migratory low (November 8–14, 2021), P4 - Continental migratory high (November 15–21, 2021), and P5 - Continental migratory low (November 22–25, 2021). The synoptic features, such as the locations of stagnant or migratory cyclones and anticyclones were analyzed during the periods, in association with levels of particulate matter with a diameter of less than 2.5 μm (PM2.5 levels) over the Seoul metropolitan area (SMA). The synoptic characteristics showed that the presence of a high pressure system was well associated with the occurrence of high PM2.5 level over the SMA, and a pattern of near-surface divergence and descending motions originating from the mid-troposphere. In addition, we identified and compared two PM2.5 level peaks caused by local accumulation and transboundary transport process. We also investigated the underlying synoptic meteorological mechanisms of these peaks in terms of large-scale dynamic variables, such as geostrophic wind speed, transient synoptic scale features, vorticity, and vorticity advection at 850 hPa geopotential height, which are responsible for transboundary transport and local accumulation-driven process of PM2.5 in the SMA.

Satellite-based, top-down approach for the adjustment of aerosol precursor emissions over East Asia: the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) NO2 product and the Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) aerosol optical depth (AOD) data fusion product and its proxy

Abstract. In response to the need for an up-to-date emissions inventory and the recent achievement of geostationary observations afforded by the Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) and its sister instruments, this study aims to establish a top-down approach for adjusting aerosol precursor emissions over East Asia. This study involves a series of the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) NO2 product, the GEMS aerosol optical depth (AOD) data fusion product and its proxy product, and chemical transport model (CTM)-based inverse modeling techniques. We begin by sequentially adjusting bottom-up estimates of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and primary particulate matter (PM) emissions, both of which significantly contribute to aerosol loadings over East Asia to reduce model biases in AOD simulations during the year 2019. While the model initially underestimates AOD by 50.73 % on average, the sequential emissions adjustments that led to overall increases in the amounts of NOx emissions by 122.79 % and of primary PM emissions by 76.68 % and 114.63 % (single- and multiple-instrument-derived emissions adjustments, respectively) reduce the extents of AOD underestimation to 33.84 % and 19.60 %, respectively. We consider the outperformance of the model using the emissions constrained by the data fusion product to be the result of the improvement in the quantity of available data. Taking advantage of the data fusion product, we perform sequential emissions adjustments during the spring of 2022, the period during which the substantial reductions in anthropogenic emissions took place accompanied by the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns over highly industrialized and urbanized regions in China. While the model initially overestimates surface PM2.5 concentrations by 47.58 % and 20.60 % in the North China Plain (NCP) region and South Korea (hereafter referred to as Korea), the sequential emissions adjustments that led to overall decreases in NOx and primary PM emissions by 7.84 % and 9.03 %, respectively, substantially reduce the extents of PM2.5 underestimation to 19.58 % and 6.81 %, respectively. These findings indicate that the series of emissions adjustments, supported by the TROPOMI and GEMS-involved data fusion products, performed in this study are generally effective at reducing model biases in simulations of aerosol loading over East Asia; in particular, the model performance tends to improve to a greater extent on the condition that spatiotemporally more continuous and frequent observational references are used to capture variations in bottom-up estimates of emissions. In addition to reconfirming the close association between aerosol precursor emissions and AOD as well as surface PM2.5 concentrations, the findings of this study could provide a useful basis for how to most effectively exploit multisource top-down information for capturing highly varying anthropogenic emissions.

Tropospheric NO2 vertical profiles over South Korea and their relation to oxidant chemistry: implications for geostationary satellite retrievals and the observation of NO2 diurnal variation from space

Abstract. Nitrogen oxides (NOx≡ NO + NO2) are of central importance for air quality, climate forcing, and nitrogen deposition to ecosystems. The Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) is now providing hourly NO2 satellite observations over East Asia, offering the first direct measurements of NO2 diurnal variation from space to guide understanding of NOx emissions and chemistry. The NO2 retrieval requires independent vertical profile information from a chemical transport model (CTM) to compute the air mass factor (AMF) that relates the NO2 column measured along the line of sight to the NO2 vertical column. Here, we use aircraft observations from the Korea-United States Air Quality (KORUS-AQ) campaign over the Seoul metropolitan area (SMA) and around the Korean Peninsula in May–June 2016 to better understand the factors controlling the NO2 vertical profile, its diurnal variation, the implications for the AMFs, and the ability of the GEOS-Chem CTM to compute the NO2 vertical profiles used for AMFs. Proper representation of oxidant chemistry is critical for the CTM simulation of NO2 vertical profiles and is achieved in GEOS-Chem through new model developments, including aerosol nitrate photolysis, reduced uptake of hydroperoxy (HO2) radicals by aerosols, and accounting for atmospheric oxidation of volatile chemical products (VCPs). We find that the tropospheric NO2 columns measured from space in the SMA are mainly contributed by the planetary boundary layer (PBL) below 2 km altitude, reflecting the highly polluted conditions. Repeated measurements of NO2 vertical profiles over the SMA at different times of day show that diurnal change in mixing depth affecting the NO2 vertical profile induces a diurnal variation in AMFs of comparable magnitude to the diurnal variation in the NO2 column. GEOS-Chem captures this diurnal variation in AMFs and more generally the variability in the AMFs for the KORUS-AQ NO2 vertical profiles (2.7 % mean bias, 7.6 % precision), with some outliers in the morning due to errors in the timing of mixed-layer growth.

Spectral replacement using machine learning methods for continuous mapping of the Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS)

Abstract. Earth radiances in the form of hyperspectral measurements contain useful information on atmospheric constituents and aerosol properties. The Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) is an environmental sensor measuring such hyperspectral data in the ultraviolet and visible spectral range over the Asia–Pacific region. After completion of the in-orbit test of GEMS in October 2020, bad pixels are found as one of remaining calibration issues resulting in obvious spatial gaps in the measured radiances as well as retrieved properties. To solve the fundamental cause of the issue, this study takes an approach reproducing the defective spectra with machine learning models using artificial neural network (ANN) and multivariate linear regression (Linear). Here the models are trained with defect-free measurements of GEMS after dimensionality reduction with principal component analysis (PCA). Results show that the PCA-Linear model has small reproduction errors for a narrower spectral gap and is less vulnerable to outliers with an error of 0.5 %–5 %. On the other hand, the PCA-ANN model shows better results emulating strong non-linear relations with an error of about 5 % except for the shorter wavelengths around 300 nm. It is demonstrated that dominant spectral patterns can be successfully reproduced with the models within the level of radiometric calibration accuracy of GEMS, but a limitation remains when it comes to finer spectral features. When applying the reproduced spectra to retrieval processes of cloud and ozone, cloud centroid pressure shows an error of around 1 %, while total ozone column density shows relatively higher variance. As an initial step reproducing spectral patterns for bad pixels, the current study provides the potential and limitations of machine learning methods to improve hyperspectral measurements from the geostationary orbit.

GEO-KOMPSAT-2A/2B AMI/GOCI-II/GEMS Data & Products

Two geostationary satellites developed by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute and currently in operation are the GEO-KOMPSAT-2A (GK-2A) and the GEO-KOMPSAT-2B (GK-2B). The main instruments mounted on these satellites are the Advanced Meteorological Imager (AMI), the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI-II) and the Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS). This paper briefly introduced the GK-2A and GK-2B programs including measurement principles and elements of the instruments. Moreover, the data formats, operational products, and applications are summarized.

Evaluation of correlated Pandora column NO2 and in situ surface NO2 measurements during GMAP campaign

Abstract. To validate the Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS), the GEMS Map of Air Pollution (GMAP) campaign was conducted during 2020–2021 by integrating Pandora Asia Network, aircraft, and in situ measurements. In the present study, GMAP-2020 measurements were applied to evaluate urban air quality and explore the synergy of Pandora column (PC) NO2 measurements and surface in situ (SI) NO2 measurements for Seosan, South Korea, where large point source (LPS) emissions are densely clustered. Due to the difficulty of interpreting the effects of LPS emissions on air quality downwind of Seosan using SI monitoring networks alone, we explored the combined analysis of both PC-NO2 and SI-NO2 measurements. Agglomerative hierarchical clustering using vertical meteorological variables combined with PC-NO2 and SI-NO2 yielded three distinct conditions: synoptic wind-dominant (SD), mixed (MD), and local wind-dominant (LD). These results suggest meteorology-dependent correlations between PC-NO2 and SI-NO2. Overall, yearly daytime mean (11:00–17:00 KST) PC-NO2 and SI-NO2 statistical data showed good linear correlations (R=∼0.73); however, the differences in correlations were largely attributed to meteorological conditions. SD conditions characterized by higher wind speeds and advected marine boundary layer heights suppressed fluctuations in both PC-NO2 and SI-NO2, driving a uniform vertical NO2 structure with higher correlations, whereas under LD conditions, LPS plumes were decoupled from the surface or were transported from nearby cities, weakening correlations through anomalous vertical NO2 gradients. The discrepancies suggest that using either PC-NO2 or SI-NO2 observations alone involves a higher possibility of uncertainty under LD conditions or prevailing transport processes. However, under MD conditions, both pollution ventilation due to high surface wind speeds and daytime photochemical NO2 loss contributed to stronger correlations through a decline in both PC-NO2 and SI-NO2 towards noon. Thus, Pandora Asia Network observations collected over 13 Asian countries since 2021 can be utilized for detailed investigation of the vertical complexity of air quality, and the conclusions can be also applied when performing GEMS observation interpretation in combination with SI measurements.

Polarization performance simulation for the GeoXO atmospheric composition instrument: NO2 retrieval impacts

Abstract. NOAA's Geostationary Extended Observations (GeoXO) constellation will continue and expand on the capabilities of the current generation of geostationary satellite systems to support US weather, ocean, atmosphere, and climate operations. It is planned to consist of a dedicated atmospheric composition instrument (ACX) to support air quality forecasting and monitoring by providing capabilities similar to missions such as TEMPO (Tropospheric Emission: Monitoring Pollution), currently planned to launch in 2023, as well as OMI (Ozone Monitoring Instrument), TROPOMI (TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument), and GEMS (Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer) currently in operation. As the early phases of ACX development are progressing, design trade-offs are being considered to understand the relationship between instrument design choices and trace gas retrieval impacts. Some of these choices will affect the instrument polarization sensitivity (PS), which can have radiometric impacts on environmental satellite observations. We conducted a study to investigate how such radiometric impacts can affect NO2 retrievals by exploring their sensitivities to time of day, location, and scene type with an ACX instrument model that incorporates PS. The study addresses the basic steps of operational NO2 retrievals: the spectral fitting step and the conversion of slant column to vertical column via the air mass factor (AMF). The spectral fitting step was performed by generating at-sensor radiance from a clear-sky scene with a known NO2 amount, the application of an instrument model including both instrument PS and noise, and a physical retrieval. The spectral fitting step was found to mitigate the impacts of instrument PS. The AMF-related step was considered for clear-sky and partially cloudy scenes, for which instrument PS can lead to errors in interpreting the cloud content, propagating to AMF errors and finally to NO2 retrieval errors. For this step, the NO2 retrieval impacts were small but non-negligible for high NO2 amounts; we estimated that a typical high NO2 amount can cause a maximum retrieval error of 0.25×1015 molec. cm−2 for a PS of 5 %. These simulation capabilities were designed to aid in the development of a GeoXO atmospheric composition instrument that will improve our ability to monitor and understand the Earth's atmosphere.

Improved ozone simulation in East Asia via assimilating observations from the first geostationary air-quality monitoring satellite: Insights from an Observing System Simulation Experiment

The Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) is the world's first air quality instrument in the geostationary (GEO) orbit to monitor trace gases and aerosols at an unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution over East Asia, shedding light on the gradually alarming ozone pollution contrary to declining precursor emissions in this region. Here we use synthetic GEMS ozone profiles through the Observing System Simulation Experiment (OSSE) for evaluating the benefit of GEMS hourly measurements on chemical data simulation based on a Kalman filter technique. Assimilating synthetic GEMS data improves surface ozone simulation as its root-mean-square error (RMSE) is reduced by 7.2–19.2% over major urban areas in East Asia, along with a more accurate (6.3–29.2%) capturing of high-ozone events. The assimilation also better represents ozone vertical distributions in the middle to upper troposphere and better captures stratospheric intrusion events, with an RMSE reduction of 18.2–49.2% between 200 and 300 hPa. Our OSSE study offers a valuable reference for future ozone simulations, especially when massive observations become available in the coming era of GEO satellites.

An Observing System Simulation Experiment Framework for Air Quality Forecasts in Northeast Asia: A Case Study Utilizing Virtual Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer and Surface Monitored Aerosol Data

Prior knowledge of the effectiveness of new observation instruments or new data streams for air quality can contribute significantly to shaping the policy and budget planning related to those instruments and data. In view of this, one of the main purposes of the development and application of the Observing System Simulation Experiments (OSSE) is to assess the potential impact of new observations on the quality of the current monitoring or forecasting systems, thereby making this framework valuable. This study introduces the overall OSSE framework established to support air quality forecasting and the details of its individual components. Furthermore, it shows case study results from Northeast Asia and the potential benefits of the new observation data scenarios on the PM2.5 forecasting skills, including the PM data from 200 virtual monitoring sites in the Gobi Desert and North Korean non-forest areas (NEWPM) and the aerosol optical depths (AOD) data from South Korea’s Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS AOD). Performance statistics suggest that the concurrent assimilation of the NEWPM and the PM data from current monitoring sites in China and South Korea can improve the PM2.5 concentration forecasts in South Korea by 66.4% on average for October 2017 and 95.1% on average for February 2018. Assimilating the GEMS AOD improved the performance of the PM2.5 forecasts in South Korea for October 2017 by approximately 68.4% (~78.9% for February 2018). This OSSE framework is expected to be continuously implemented to verify its utilization potential for various air quality observation systems and data scenarios. Hopefully, this kind of application result will aid environmental researchers and decision-makers in performing additional in-depth studies for the improvement of PM air quality forecasts.

Characteristics of the Spectral Response Function of Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer Analyzed by Ground and In-Orbit Measurements

The Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS), an ultraviolet and visible imaging spectrometer, provides air-quality information over a large area of the Asia Pacific region with a high spatiotemporal resolution. To assure the reliability of trace gas retrieval, accurate knowledge of the spectral response function (SRF) is critical for spectral calibration as well as retrieval algorithms. Here, we characterize the GEMS SRF using prelaunch SRFs obtained with the monochromatic laser measurements during the ground test and inflight SRFs retrieved using the solar irradiance measurements after the launch. The prelaunch SRFs are analyzed in terms of shape (skewness and kurtosis), width, and under-sampling and show that the full-width at half-maximum is smaller than 0.6 nm with a maximum of 0.589 nm. The variations along both the spectral and spatial directions are smooth and within 3.65%, indicating a highly homogenous and stable optical system of GEMS. To characterize the prelaunch SRFs and monitor the behavior of inflight SRFs, we applied several analytical functions including asymmetric super Gaussian (ASG) and hybrid Gaussians to the prelaunch SRFs. The spectral fitting of the measured GEMS irradiance with a reference spectrum shows that the ASG to be the best representative of the GEMS SRFs. The inflight SRFs, retrieved with the GEMS irradiances and the ASG, agree well with the prelaunch SRFs, suggesting that the inflight spectral performance and characteristics of GEMS are similar to those investigated from the on-ground characterization.

Effect of Error in SO2 Slant Column Density on the Accuracy of SO2 Transport Flow Rate Estimates Based on GEMS Synthetic Radiances

This study investigates the uncertainties associated with estimates of the long-range transport SO2 (LRT-SO2) flow rate calculated hourly using Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) synthetic radiances. These radiances were simulated over the Korean Peninsula and the surrounding regions using inputs from the GEOS-Chem model for January, April, July, and October 2016. The LRT-SO2 calculation method, which requires SO2 vertical column densities, wind data, and planetary boundary layer information, was used to quantify the effects of the SO2 slant column density (SCD) retrieval error and uncertainties in wind data on the accuracy of the LRT-SO2 estimates. The effects were estimated for simulations of three anthropogenic and three volcanic SO2 transport events. When there were no errors in the GEMS SO2 SCD and wind data, the average true LRT-SO2 flow rates (standard deviation) and those calculated for these events were 1.17 (± 0.44) and 1.21 (±0.44) Mg/h, respectively. However, the averages of the true LRT-SO2 flow rates and those calculated for the three anthropogenic (volcanic) SO2 events were 0.61 (1.17) and 0.64 (1.20) Mg/h, respectively, in the presence of GEMS SO2 SCD errors. In the presence of both errors in the GEMS SO2 SCD and wind data, the averages of the true LRT-SO2 flow rates and those calculated for the three anthropogenic (volcanic) SO2 events were 0.61 (1.17) and 0.61 (1.04) Mg/h, respectively. This corresponds to differences of 2.1% to 23.1% between the simulated and true mean LRT-SO2 flow rates. The mean correlation coefficient (R), intercept, and slope between the true and simulated LRT-SO2 flow rates were 0.51, 0.43, and 0.45 for the six simulated events, respectively. This study demonstrates that SO2 SCD accuracy is an important factor in improving estimates of LRT-SO2 flow rates.

A Fast Retrieval of Cloud Parameters Using a Triplet of Wavelengths of Oxygen Dimer Band around 477 nm

Clouds act as a major reflector that changes the amount of sunlight reflected to space. Change in radiance intensity due to the presence of clouds interrupts the retrieval of trace gas or aerosol properties from satellite data. In this paper, we developed a fast and robust algorithm, named the fast cloud retrieval algorithm, using a triplet of wavelengths (469, 477, and 485 nm) of the O2–O2 absorption band around 477 nm (CLDTO4) to derive the cloud information such as cloud top pressure (CTP) and cloud fraction (CF) for the Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS). The novel algorithm is based on the fact that the difference in the optical path through which light passes with regard to the altitude of clouds causes a change in radiance due to the absorption of O2–O2 at the three selected wavelengths. To reduce the time required for algorithm calculations, the look-up table (LUT) method was applied. The LUT was pre-constructed for various conditions of geometry using Vectorized Linearized Discrete Ordinate Radiative Transfer (VLIDORT) to consider the polarization of the scattered light. The GEMS was launched in February 2020, but the observed data of GEMS have not yet been widely released. To evaluate the performance of the algorithm, the retrieved CTP and CF using observational data from the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment-2 (GOME-2), which cover the spectral range of GEMS, were compared with the results of the Fast Retrieval Scheme for Clouds from the Oxygen A band (FRESCO) algorithm, which is based on the O2 A-band. There was good agreement between the results, despite small discrepancies for low clouds.

Synergistic Use of Hyperspectral UV-Visible OMI and Broadband Meteorological Imager MODIS Data for a Merged Aerosol Product

The retrieval of optimal aerosol datasets by the synergistic use of hyperspectral ultraviolet (UV)–visible and broadband meteorological imager (MI) techniques was investigated. The Aura Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) Level 1B (L1B) was used as a proxy for hyperspectral UV–visible instrument data to which the Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) aerosol algorithm was applied. Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) L1B and dark target aerosol Level 2 (L2) data were used with a broadband MI to take advantage of the consistent time gap between the MODIS and the OMI. First, the use of cloud mask information from the MI infrared (IR) channel was tested for synergy. High-spatial-resolution and IR channels of the MI helped mask cirrus and sub-pixel cloud contamination of GEMS aerosol, as clearly seen in aerosol optical depth (AOD) validation with Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) data. Second, dust aerosols were distinguished in the GEMS aerosol-type classification algorithm by calculating the total dust confidence index (TDCI) from MODIS L1B IR channels. Statistical analysis indicates that the Probability of Correct Detection (POCD) between the forward and inversion aerosol dust models (DS) was increased from 72% to 94% by use of the TDCI for GEMS aerosol-type classification, and updated aerosol types were then applied to the GEMS algorithm. Use of the TDCI for DS type classification in the GEMS retrieval procedure gave improved single-scattering albedo (SSA) values for absorbing fine pollution particles (BC) and DS aerosols. Aerosol layer height (ALH) retrieved from GEMS was compared with Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) data, which provides high-resolution vertical aerosol profile information. The CALIOP ALH was calculated from total attenuated backscatter data at 1064 nm, which is identical to the definition of GEMS ALH. Application of the TDCI value reduced the median bias of GEMS ALH data slightly. The GEMS ALH bias approximates zero, especially for GEMS AOD values of >~0.4 and GEMS SSA values of <~0.95. Finally, the AOD products from the GEMS algorithm and MI were used in aerosol merging with the maximum-likelihood estimation method, based on a weighting factor derived from the standard deviation of the original AOD products. With the advantage of the UV–visible channel in retrieving aerosol properties over bright surfaces, the combined AOD products demonstrated better spatial data availability than the original AOD products, with comparable accuracy. Furthermore, pixel-level error analysis of GEMS AOD data indicates improvement through MI synergy.

Spectral Calibration Algorithm for the Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS)

The Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) onboard the Geostationary Korean Multi-Purpose Satellite 2B was successfully launched in February 2020. GEMS is a hyperspectral spectrometer measuring solar irradiance and Earth radiance in the wavelength range of 300 to 500 nm. This paper introduces the spectral calibration algorithm for GEMS, which uses a nonlinear least-squares approach. Sensitivity tests for a series of unknown algorithm parameters such as spectral range for fitting, spectral response function (SRF), and reference spectrum were conducted using the synthetic GEMS spectrum prepared with the ground-measured GEMS SRF. The test results show that the required accuracy of 0.002 nm is achievable provided the SRF and the high-resolution reference spectrum are properly prepared. Such a satisfactory performance is possible mainly due to the inclusion of additional fitting parameters of spectral scales (shift, squeeze, and high order shifts) and SRF (width, shape and asymmetry). For the application to the actual GEMS data, in-orbit SRF is to be monitored using an analytic SRF function and the measured GEMS solar irradiance, while a reference spectrum is going to be selected during the instrument in-orbit test. The calibrated GEMS data is expected to be released by the end of 2020.
