Petrogenetic relationship of the variably Ni−Cu−platinum-group element (PGE)-mineralized intrusions of the Thunder Bay North Intrusive Complex, Midcontinent Rift, Canada: Implications for mineral exploration in mafic−ultramafic complexes

The Thunder Bay North Intrusive Complex (TBNIC) of Canada comprises six variably Ni−Cu−platinum-group element (PGE)-mineralized mafic−ultramafic intrusions that intruded the Archean Quetico Subprovince. These are the Current, Escape, Lone Island, Greenwich, and 025 intrusions, with the former three aligned along an east−west-trending intrusion termed the East−West Corridor. These intrusions have a consistent igneous stratigraphy comprising, from bottom to top, peridotite, gabbros, and quartz gabbro. Only the Current and Escape intrusions are known to host sulfide mineralization in the peridotite. Despite the economic significance of the TBNIC, little work has been done to characterize its petrogenetic evolution and the causes of the apparent variable fertility. Our new ages for Escape (1107.6 ± 0.9 Ma) and Greenwich (1105.7 ± 0.9 Ma), combined with previously determined ages for Current (1106.6 ± 1.6 Ma) and Lone Island (1106.3 ± 2.1 Ma), demonstrate that the TBNIC was emplaced as part of the ca. 1.1 Ga Midcontinent Rift event. The similarities in their rare earth element geochemistry and consistently low Th/La−Sri values indicate that the intrusions crystallized from genetically related magmas that did not assimilate significant amounts of crustal material. Accordingly, their systematically negative εNdt values and Nb anomalies likely reflect that their parent magmas were largely sourced from the subdcontinental lithospheric mantle and not the Keweenaw Plume. Given their genetic relationship, the variable fertility of the intrusions cannot be related to processes that occurred in their mantle sources. Since the gabbros have systematically depleted Cu/Zr−Cu/Pd ratios and the peridotites have enriched ratios, the apparent variable fertility is likely related to the timing and location of sulfide segregation and accumulation, with the barren gabbros preserving magmas that lost sulfide liquid during transport to shallow crustal levels, and the mineralized peridotites recording accumulation of sulfide liquid. This interpretation has important implications for exploration as it implies that sulfide mineralization in the apparently barren intrusions may be located at depth in undiscovered ultramafic cumulates.

REE signatures in quaternary deposits: implication for provenance and economic potentials

The Rare Earth Element (REE) geochemistry of siliciclastic sediment in the Ilaje area, eastern Dahomey basin, southwestern Nigeria was conducted to determine the provenance, geotectonic setting as well the REE economic potential in the sediments. Geochemical analysis results (ppm) revealed the concentration of La varies from 1.87–21.47 while Ce ranges from 1.16–45.98. Others include; Pr (1.07–39.56), Nd (0.71–26.02), Sm (0.42–12.51), Eu (0.20–4.66), Gd (0.27–8.79), Tb (0.29–3.97), Dy (0.28–3.62), Ho (0.22–2.76), Er (0.29–2.64), Tm (0.33–3.83), Yb (0.37–3.75) and Lu (0.29–3.03) respectively while the ∑REE ranges from 2.25 to 6686.75 ppm. The REE normalization plot is characterized by an inclined shape depletion indicating depletion trend. The patterns show an enriched Light Rare Earth Elements (LREE) and Heavy Rare Earth Element (HREE) pattern indicating upper continental crust sourced materials. The plot also revealed a negative Eu anomaly which may be associated with plagioclase fractionation in the acidic source rocks. The high ∑REE in the sediments has uncovered the economic potential of the sediments as a useful raw material resource for technological advancement.

Fluid Inclusion, Rare Earth Element Geochemistry, and Isotopic (O and S) Characteristics of the Ardakan Barite Deposit, Yazd Province, Iran

The stratabound barite mineralization occurs in the Ardakan deposit as patches and veins in the dolomites and limestones of the Middle Triassic Shotori Formation. Rare-earth element (REE) geochemistry, O and S isotopes, and fluid inclusion data were used to identify the mode of barite formation. Barite is associated with subordinate fluorite and quartz and, to a lesser extent, with sphalerite, malachite, chrysocolla, and iron and manganese oxide-hydroxides. Barite contains a very low ∑REE concentration (14.80–19.59 ppm) and is enriched in light rare-earth elements (LREEs) relative to heavy rare-earth elements (HREEs). The low ∑REE content and the Ce/La ratio (4.0–6.5) indicate a hydrothermal (terrestrial) origin of the barite. Similar to barite, the ∑REE content in fluorite is low (0.14–6.52 ppm) and suggests a sedimentary setting. The Tb/Ca versus Tb/La diagram also indicates a hydrothermal origin of fluorite. The δ34S values in the barite (+27.9 to +32.4‰) indicate that the sulfur most likely originates from evaporites and/or connate waters from the Late Precambrian to the Lower Cambrian. The δ18O values (+15.9 to +18.1‰) in the barite show that the oxygen originated either from Late Precambrian–Lower Cambrian evaporites or from basinal brines with slightly higher δ18O values than the evaporites. The salinity and homogenization temperature ranges of the aqueous fluid inclusions in barite, fluorite, and quartz (0.88–16.89 wt% NaCl equivalent and 90–270 °C, respectively) reveal that the mineralizing fluids were formed from basinal brines with the participation of heated meteoric water. From this, it is concluded that the Ardakan barite deposit was formed by the meeting of heated, ascending sulfate-bearing meteoric water and cooler, Ba-bearing connate water trapped in the overlying Middle Triassic dolomites and limestones. The Ardakan deposit belongs to the structure-related class and the unconformity-related subclass of barite deposits.

Mineralogy and Geochemistry of Rare Earth Elements in Carboniferous-Permian Coals at the Eastern Margin of the Ordos Basin.

This article used Carboniferous-Permian coals from the Jungar, Hedong, and Weibei Coalfields in the east of the Ordos Basin as research samples. Characteristics of coal quality, petrology, mineralogy, and geochemistry were analyzed by proximate analysis, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy-energy spectrum analysis, and incident light microscope. The enrichment regulations, distribution patterns, and occurrences of REY (rare earth element and yttrium) in coal under different geological conditions were compared. Geological significance and the influence of REY were then discussed. The average REY of Permian coal in the eastern margin of the basin is 127.9 μg/g, CC = 1.87, and the average REY of Carboniferous coal is 117.49 μg/g, CC = 1.72, which are within the normal enrichment range. The inorganic affinity of REYs in the study area is strong and mainly occurs in clay minerals and detrital phosphates and correlates well with LREY. The Permian coal sedimentary environment is more oxidized than the Taiyuan formation, and the Carboniferous coal sedimentary environment is noticeably more affected by marine water. With an increasing degree of coalification, the concentration of rare earth elements (REE) in high-rank coal vitrinite is lower than that in inertinite. In contrast, the concentration of REEs in low-rank coal is the opposite. This is because the oxygen-containing functional groups that can combine with REEs in vitrinite reduce significantly, resulting in the loss of trace elements into other forms. The provenance of the northern and central regions of the study area is mainly sedimentary rocks, granite, alkaline basalt, and continental tholeiite, while the southern region is mainly granite and sedimentary rocks.

Geochemical Split Among the Suspended and Mud Sediments in the Nethravati River: Insights to Compositional Similarity of Peninsular Gneiss and the Deccan Basalt Derived Sediments, and Its Implications on Tracing the Provenance in the Indian Ocean

AbstractMajor, trace, and rare earth element (REE) geochemistry of sediments from a tropical mountain river is investigated to understand the behavior of chemical elements during weathering and transportation in a Peninsular Gneissic terrain. The results from this study are compared with the Deccan Basalt‐derived River sediments and the eastern Arabian Sea sediments with an intent to highlight the challenges associated with the provenance determination of sediments along the continental margin of India. The geochemistry of suspended particulate matter (SPM) and mud sediments (<63 μm) of the Nethravati River indicate that sediments are derived from a relatively homogenous lithology, characterized by intermediate rocks of tonalitic (low‐Al TTGs) composition. The tectonic origin of the source rocks discriminated using sediment geochemistry suggests an ocean island arc origin. The sediments experience intense chemical weathering in the source region. The elemental composition and their inter‐element relationships suggest differential chemical weathering of mineral phases fractionate mafic components and their secondary mineral products in SPM, and mixed sources dominated by felsic components and their secondary mineral products in mud sediments. Intense chemical weathering induces significant geochemical splits among the suspended and mud sediments. The transport of mafic‐biased sediments from Peninsular India to Oceans, and the geochemical similarity with Deccan Basalt‐derived sediments makes it challenging to track the Peninsular Gneiss‐derived sediment provenance along the continental margin of India using conventional elemental geochemistry. The inferences from this study have important implications for determining the sediment provenance along the continental margin of India.

Drivers of rare earth elements (REEs) and radionuclides in changing subarctic (Nunavik, Canada) surface waters near a mining project

The emergence of mining projects for rare earth elements (REEs) in response to rising global demand and geopolitical factors introduces environmental concerns, such as the suspected release of anthropogenic REEs to aquatic systems and the coexistence of radionuclides (U, Th). Northern regions confront heightened challenges from limited research and accelerated climate change. Drivers of REEs in surface waters (including George and Koroc rivers, their tributaries, and thermokarst lakes) were studied (2017–2023) in subarctic Canada within a climate transition zone, near a prospective REE mine. Dissolved REEs (<0.45 μm) correlated positively with Al, Fe, Th, U, Cl– and DOC. A novel relationship with water temperature demonstrated an approximate 10-fold decrease in REE concentrations over the environmental gradient (2–20 ℃), suggesting complex implications for REE speciation under climate pressures. Optical analyses further predicted REEs were mobilized by humic-rich, terrestrial DOC, with correlations presenting a possible co-transport with Al, Fe and Th. Relationships for redox-sensitive Ce anomalies (Ce/Ce* = 0.18–1.2) with multi-valent trace metals (Al, Fe, Ti) and DOC were suggestive of a preferential adsorption of Ce by inorganic colloids in low-DOC systems. Findings emphasized the potential for changes in REE geochemistry with ongoing northern surface warming and vegetation shifts.

Features of rare earth elements geochemistry in coals of Central Kazakhstan

AbstractThis research presents the results of a comprehensive study of mineralogical and geochemical features of REE distribution in coals of Central Kazakhstan deposits—Karaganda coal basin and Shubarkol deposit, which have large hard coal reserves and are industrially important for the coal industry of Kazakhstan; the research is based on 205 samples of clayey interlayers and coal seams. It shows basic patterns of distribution and features of concentration for impurity elements, gives an estimate of the impurity elements concentration, including REE, defines conditions and factors of their accumulation, and studies features of their forms in coal and coal-bearing rocks, which allows estimating the mechanisms of their migration and conditions of accumulation. According to the results of geochemical indicators, the article establishes the factors of REE dislocation, reveals the composition of margin rocks that have influenced REE concentration in coal seams, and the presented latest data on mineralogy allowed to establish the ways of their transportation to the paleobasin during the syn- and epigenetic periods of formation of the coal deposits of Central Kazakhstan being researched. It was found that the coals are insignificantly enriched with heavy lanthanides from Ho to Lu. The distribution curves of UCC normalized REE values in the coals are similar and coincide, but they are less than the average value for world coal, and amount to only one-third of the UCC. It was found that the highest concentrations of all REE are characteristic of clayey interlayers and oxidized coals. The La/Yb ratio in this case increases upwards along the section, indicating mainly clastogenic mechanism of REE delivery to the coals. In coal and clay samples, the predominant mineral form of REE is light lanthanide phosphates. Identified particles of REE from minerals and their composition peculiarities suppose autigene nature of their formation. The formation of the bulk of autigene minerals occurred during the maturation of brown coals and their transformation into hard ones.

Rare earth element geochemistry of reef carbonates in the South China Sea since the Miocene: Insights into paleoclimatic significance

Seawater chemistry critically affects the functioning of ocean ecosystems. However, the evolution of the seawater chemistry in the South China Sea (SCS) since the Miocene is not fully resolved, and its links to tectonic and climate changes remain unclear. In-situ, shallow marine carbonates can provide insights into long-term changes in seawater chemistry and associated environmental processes. In this study, we conducted the rare earth element (REE) analysis of the NK-1 core in the southern SCS since the Miocene. The results reveal poor relationships between siliciclastic/diagenetic indicators (mineralogical, isotopic, and elemental data) and REE proxies, which demonstrate that the REE compositions are insensitive to non-carbonate contaminations and diagenesis. The results exhibit seawater-like REE patterns with LREE depletion, positive La anomaly, superchondritic Y/Ho ratio, and negative Ce anomaly, which demonstrate that this core has preserved a signal of the primary seawater REE composition. The Y/Ho ratios range from 45 to 80 and La anomalies range from 1.0 to 2.3 during ∼23–13 Ma, and they then decrease after ∼13 Ma, with the Y/Ho ratios ranging from 30 to 52 and La anomalies ranging from 0.6 to 1.5. Considering that seawater REE components are mainly sourced from terrigenous sources which exhibit lower La anomalies and Y/Ho ratios, our results indicate an enhanced terrigenous input since ∼13 Ma. We consider that the climate cooling and aridity since ∼13 Ma might be responsible for the phenomenon.

Geochemistry of Rare Earth Elements in Pahang River Sediment, Malaysia

Rare earth elements (REE) are a set of 17 chemically similar metallic elements including 15 lanthanides, scandium and yttrium. The current status of REE as a global strategic commodity has encouraged the identification of REE ore deposits. This research is carried out to identify the mining feasibility of fluvial sediment REE and to understand the sediment's physical and chemical characteristics and effects on the geochemical behaviour of REE in the longest river of Peninsular Malaysia namely Pahang River. Surface sediment samples were collected along Pahang River (n=44) in approximately 10 km distance intervals. The sediment samples were analyzed using XRF to determine the major oxide content. Meanwhile, REE content in the sediment samples was extracted using the Total Digestion method and analysed using ICP-MS. The results show the average value of ΣREE at surface sediments of the Pahang River is 42.58 ppm and can be considered too low to be economically mined. Each area shows higher fractionation of light REE than heavy REE with negative europium anomalies, suggesting sediments in this area were derived from felsic rocks. The concentration of REE in Pahang River surface sediments was controlled by the porosity and organic matter as showed by the correlation of ΣREE with porosity (R2=0.65) and organic matter content (R2=0.71). In conclusion, this research's findings are generally useful for further REE mineral exploration and fluvial sediment environmental monitoring.

Rare earth element behaviors of groundwater in overlying aquifers under the influence of coal mining in northern Ordos Basin, China.

Rare earth elements (REEs) have been used as tracers to reveal the hydrochemical sources and processes in groundwater systems that are usually modified by anthropogenic inputs. However, the REE behaviors in groundwater affected by mining activities have yet to be fully understood. In combination of REE geochemistry with general hydrochemical and isotopic (δ2H and δ18O) methods, this study investigated the concentration and fractionation of REEs in alkaline groundwater from two coal mines with similar aquifer lithology but different mining histories in the Northern Ordos Basin. One of the coal mines started mining in March 2009 (Ningtiaota coal mine, NTT), while the other started mining in December 2018 (Caojiatan coal mine, CJT). Results show that the primary hydrochemical type is HCO3-Ca in NTT groundwater with pH value ranging between 7.68 and 8.60, while CJT groundwater was dominated by the HCO3-Na type with higher pH of 9.09-10.00. The average values of ΣREEs were lower, and the NASC-normalized pattern reflected more intense fractionation in NTT groundwater than those in CJT groundwater. The evident differences are caused by the distinctions in water-rock interaction, complexation of inorganic species, and adsorption of REEs in NTT and CJT groundwater. Furthermore, these processes were closely related to the pH of groundwater that was different in two coal mines, which is likely linked to the different durations of coal mining activities that led to differences in development of rock fractures and pyrite oxidation. It is expected that REEs, combined with other indicators such as pH, can be used to trace and help better understand the hydrochemical changes in groundwater caused by mining.

Geochemical evaluation of the genetic relationship of Kısacık (Ayvacık, Çanakkale/Türkiye) epithermal gold mineralization using trace and rare earth elements

The Kısacık gold deposit is situated in the Biga Peninsula, Northwest Anatolia, Türkiye. The aim of this study is to investigate the genetic relationship between the Kısacık gold deposit and the surrounding rocks using trace element and rare earth element (REE) geochemistry. The results show that the gold mineralizations in the Kısacık area have a compatible pattern with the Alakeçi-Kısacık Volcanics and the Kuşçayırı plutonic rocks in the near vicinity of the area. The gold mineralizations in the Kısacık area are consistent with the trace and rare earth element (REE) patterns of the upper continental and lower continental crust, as shown by comparison with spider diagrams normalized to different geological settings. The gold enrichments in the listvenites and ultramafic rocks in the area are also consistent with the trace and REE element patterns of these rock types. The results of this study support the conclusion that the gold mineralization in the Kısacık area is related to hydrothermal fluids that leached elements from the Alakeçi-Kısacık Volcanics. In addition, hydrothermal fluids from plutonic rocks were also effective in the mineralization process. These results suggest that the gold mineralization in the Kısacık area is related to hydrothermal fluids that leached elements from the Alakeçi-Kısacık Volcanics.

Geochemical and Isotopic Compositions of Fluorites from the Yama Fluorite Deposit in the Qilian Orogen in Northwest China, and Their Metallogenic Implications

The Yama area is characterized by numerous large-scale fluorite–quartz veins that are located along faults within the widespread Late Devonian–Late Silurian syenogranites in the Tataleng granitic batholith, Qilian Orogen, Northwest China. These fluorite–quartz veins contribute to an important fluorite reserve, but their ore genesis remains unresolved so far. In this study, trace elements, rare earth elements (REEs), and hydrogen, oxygen, and strontium isotopic compositions of fluorites are analyzed. The studied fluorite samples have similar chondrite-normalized REEs, including Y patterns, with relatively strong enrichment in heavy REEs, negative Eu anomalies, strongly positive Y anomalies, and comparably invariable Y/Ho ratios of 41.43–73.79, suggesting a unique hydrothermal genesis. The relatively variable values of δD and δ18O are −77.4‰ to −102.4‰ and −12.7‰ to −4.3‰, respectively, close to the meteoric water line. These fluorites yield relatively invariable analytical 87Sr/86Sr ratios of 0.749089−0.756628 (except for an anomalously high ratio), and their calculated initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios, based on the ore-forming ages provided, are apparently higher than the calculated initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios of syenogranite wall rocks. Collectively, the geochemistry of trace elements, REEs, and stable isotopes (H, O, and Sr) suggests that the ore-forming fluids were of meteoric origin and that the Sr sources were directly derived from the ore-forming fluids themselves rather than syenogranite wall rocks. Finally, it was considered that the Yama fluorite deposit is a fault-controlled hydrothermal vein-type deposit which was possibly related to the evolution of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean in the Permian–Triassic.

The article review the geochemistry of rare earth elements (REE) in sedimentary marine carbonates (limestones and dolostones) with respect to using the cerium anomaly as a proxy for redox conditions in ancient seawater. The physicochemical properties of REE and Y, the problem of normalizing their contents in sediments, behavior in the World Ocean and in chemogenic deposits, the origin of La, Ce, Eu, Gd anomalies and their calculations, sample preparation techniques, contamination problem and the influence of non-carbonate REE+Y-hosting phases to whole rock and acidic leachate compositions, as well as criteria for determining seawater-like pattern are considered.

Integrated photogrammetry, lava geochemistry and palynological re-evaluation of the early evolution of the topographically constrained Mull Lava Field, Scotland

ABSTRACTPhotogrammetry was used to elucidate complex strata relationships between isolated outcrops of the Palaeocene lava fields of SW Mull, part of the North Atlantic Igneous Province. Subsequent sampling for lava geochemistry and palynology was undertaken based on interpretation of these photogrammetry models. Coherent units of Plateau- and Staffa-type lavas were identified using lava geochemistry, in particular using rare earth elements (REEs), divisions supported by multivariate statistics. Lavas with three different REE compositional clusters were identified within the Staffa magma type and four within the Plateau type of SW Mull. Understanding the distribution of these lava types was achieved using the interpreted photogrammetry models and analysis of prominent interbedded sedimentary rock units and their correlative unconformities. Probably the most renowned rocks of SW Mull are the thick columnar jointed lavas, including those of the Isle of Staffa. REE geochemistry reveals that lavas of both Staffa- and Plateau-type geochemistry occur as columnar jointed facies associated with what has previously been attributed to the Staffa Lava Formation. Instead, the SW Mull Lava Field was initiated by eruption of Plateau-type lava into a fault-controlled valley. Subsequent eruptions of Staffa-type lavas partially infilled this structure, which was finally overfilled by a thick succession of younger Plateau-type lavas. The geochemical characteristics of this Plateau–Staffa–Plateau lava succession indicate that magma reservoirs deep in the crust were succeeded by shallow melts during a period of crustal extension. This phase of shallow melting induced topographical instability and formation of sedimentary interbeds and correlative unconformities that characterise the Staffa-type lava succession. Subsequent compressive tectonics forced a return to deep crustal melts. Interbed palynofloral compositional data indicate that eruption of the later Plateau-type lavas likely took place within a period of ~2.5 million years during the Selandian to early Thanetian period.
