Two new species of the genus Thrips Linnaeus (Thysanoptera, Thripidae) in Japan, with a revised key to Japanese species of Thrips

Thrips coxalis sp. n. and T. spiranthicola sp. n. are described from Lespedeza buergeri and Spiranthes sinensis, respectively in Japan. Variation is discussed in campaniform sensilla on metascutum and abdominal tergite IX, also the distribution of microtrichia on hind coxae within Thripidae, and a revised key to Japanese species of Thrips is provided.

Identification and description of species of the genus Thrips associated with weed species occurring in the region of Zaghouan (North-Eastern Tunisia)

This study aims to identify thrips species belonging to the genus Thrips occurring on weed species which harbor thrips when crops are absent. An inventory of thrips species was carried out during three consecutive years (2019, 2020 and 2021) in eleven locations in the governorate of Zaghouan (North-Eastern Tunisia). Seven thrips species belonging to the genus Thrips were identified: Thrips tabaci Lindemann (1888), T. angusticeps Uzel (1895), T. fuscipennis Haliday (1836), T. australis Bagnall (1915), T. meridionalis Priesner (1926), T. palmi Karny (1925) and T. imaginis Bagnall (1926). The most abundant and dominant thrips species was T. tabaci considered as eudominant species with 81.7%, followed by T. angusticeps and T. fuscipennis. The rest of identified species were classified as precedent. Regarding weeds, 31 species were identified (84% dicotyledonous and 16% monocotyledonous) belonging to 16 botanical families. The most represented families were Asteraceae (22%) followed by Poaceae (16%) and Fabaceae (13%). Among these 31 weeds, only 26 species were confirmed as hosts for thrips. Systematic and morphological description of thrips species are given in this paper.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Taeniothrips tigris Bhatti, 1995 (Thysanoptera: Thripidae)

In this study, we sequenced complete mitogenome of Taeniothrips tigris Bhatti 1995. It was 15,501 bp in length containing 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, and 2 ribosomal RNA genes along with two non-coding regions. The overall base composition of Ta. tigris is 43.66% A, 35.20% T, 11.46% C, and 9.68% G, with a high AT bias of 78.86%. The constructed phylogeny using 19 mitogenomes revealed that the genus Taeniothrips is in close relationship with genus Thrips. This mitogenome data would help in deducing phylogenetic relationships studies in the order Thysanoptera.

Character state variation among species of Thrips genus (Thysanoptera) in Malaysia, with one new species and two new records.

Thrips korbuensis sp.n. is described from a high elevated area in Peninsular Malaysia. It shares many character states with Thrips coloratus but has 8-segmented antennae and abdominal segment VIII-X uniformly dark. It also shares some features with Thrips florum, and variation in some character states used to distinguish species in the Thrips hawaiiensis group are discussed. Two species, Thrips brevistylus and Thrips subnudula, are recorded for the first time from Malaysia, and an updated checklist is provided of 27 species of the genus Thrips recorded from Malaysia.

A new species of the genus Thrips (Thysanoptera, Thripidae) from theMalagasy Region.

The genus Thrips comprises 296 species (ThripsWiki 2019) and is the largest of all Terebrantian genera. The only other Thysanopteran genera comparable in size are the phlaeothripids Haplothrips and Liothrips. Species of Thrips can be found in flowers and on leaves of a wide variety of plants from grasses to trees. Most of them are beneficial pollinators (Garcia-Fayos Goldarazena 2008; Eliyahu et al. 2015), while others are pests and cause significant economic damage (Mound Marullo 1996). Some of them are polyphagous and widespread, while others are rarely seen and restricted to one species of plant (Palmer 1992).

A revised key is provided to 33 species of the genus Thrips recorded from Japan, including the descriptions of three new species, T. rhamni, T. shiranensis, T. unisetifer.

Transcriptome-wide responses of adult melon thrips (Thrips palmi) associated with capsicum chlorosis virus infection.

Thrips palmi is a widely distributed major agricultural pest in the tropics and subtropics, causing significant losses in cucurbit and solanaceous crops through feeding damage and transmission of tospoviruses. Thrips palmi is a vector of capsicum chlorosis virus (CaCV) in Australia. The present understanding of transmission biology and potential effects of CaCV on T. palmi is limited. To gain insights into molecular responses to CaCV infection, we performed RNA-Seq to identify thrips transcripts that are differentially-abundant during virus infection of adults. De-novo assembly of the transcriptome generated from whole bodies of T. palmi adults generated 166,445 contigs, of which ~24% contained a predicted open reading frame. We identified 1,389 differentially-expressed (DE) transcripts, with comparable numbers up- (708) and down-regulated (681) in virus-exposed thrips compared to non-exposed thrips. Approximately 59% of these DE transcripts had significant matches to NCBI non-redundant proteins (Blastx) and Blast2GO identified provisional functional categories among the up-regulated transcripts in virus-exposed thrips including innate immune response-related genes, salivary gland and/or gut-associated genes and vitellogenin genes. The majority of the immune-related proteins are known to serve functions in lysosome activity and melanisation in insects. Most of the up-regulated oral and extra-oral digestion-associated genes appear to be involved in digestion of proteins, lipids and plant cell wall components which may indirectly enhance the likelihood or frequency of virus transmission or may be involved in the regulation of host defence responses. Most of the down-regulated transcripts fell into the gene ontology functional category of ‘structural constituent of cuticle’. Comparison to DE genes responsive to tomato spotted wilt virus in Frankliniella occidentalis indicates conservation of some thrips molecular responses to infection by different tospoviruses. This study assembled the first transcriptome in the genus Thrips and provides important data to broaden our understanding of networks of molecular interactions between thrips and tospoviruses.

A new species of the genus Thrips (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) from the Western Ghats of India.

Thrips laurencei sp.n. is described from specimens collected on flowers of Hydrangea macrophylla in Western Ghats range of Tamil Nadu, India. This new species shows sexual dimorphism in colour, with the females brownish yellow with brown shadings but the males uniformly yellow.

Application of the LAMP Assay as a Diagnostic Technique for Rapid Identification of Thrips tabaci (Thysanoptera: Thripidae).

Rapid and accurate identification of potentially invasive taxa that may cause high economic losses or environmental damage is of critical importance. The onion thrips, Thrips tabaci Lindeman, ranks as one of the world’s most destructive agricultural pests and commonly found in imported agricultural products and field samples, but is prone to undetected transport because of its minute size as well as cryptic behavior. Although traditional taxonomic methods are pretty useful in straightforward assignment of specimens to the genus Thrips , identification in the species level is much more difficult and requires expertise, knowledge, and experience. Furthermore, it is often difficult or impossible to identify or distinguish this species from other thrips by using material from other stages of development. Based on the foregoings, use of a molecular technique known as loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) as a rapid and robust alternative species diagnostic tool would be valuable. In this study, a relatively quick and simple method was used to detect the presence of onion thrips DNA rapidly and discriminate it from other species, by using material from different stages of development. Not only LAMP itself required less than 1 h to complete but also amounts of DNA as little as that recovered from a single specimen were adequate for the detection. Another advantage of this identification system is that nonspecialists will be able to make faster and cheaper identifications.

The Thrips formosanus group from Asia and Australia with a new species of the genus Thrips (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) from India.

A new species-group in the genus Thrips is designated as Thrips formosanus group from Asia and Australia. This includes the following six species: T. floreus Kurosawa from Japan, T. formosanus Priesner from Taiwan, T. obscuripes Priesner and T. rostratus Priesner from Java, T. tanicus Bhatti from India and T. hoddlei Mound and Masumoto from Australia. One new species, Thrips moundi sp. n., is described in this group from specimens collected on grasses in Himachal Pradesh State of India. A key to the seven species of Thrips formosanus group is also provided. Partial sequence data for the gene mitochondrial cytochrome <span style="text-decoration: underline;">c oxidase (mtCOI) from the holotype and paratype of this new species is provided.

Review of the genus Thrips and related genera (Thysanoptera, Thripidae) from Japan.

Members of Thrips genus-group from Japan are reviewed, and 45 species in seven genera are recognized. Nine species and one genus are newly described: Stenchaetothrips amamiensis sp. n., S. dentatus sp. n., S. pleioblasti sp. n., Thrips nonakai sp. n., T. ogasawarensis sp. n., T. shiranesanus sp. n., T. syringae sp. n., T. typicus sp. n. and Tsutsumiothrips ryukyuensis gen. et sp. n. Moreover, 14 species of two genera are newly recorded from Japan: S. langkawiensis Ng & Mound, S. undatus Wang, Thrips alni Uzel, T. aspinus Mound & Masumoto, T. brevicornis Priesner, T. brunneus Ishida, T. extensicornis Priesner, T. minutissimus Linnaeus, T. pini (Uzel), T. subnudula (Karny), T. sukki Bhatti & Lee, T. trehernei Priesner, T. urticae Fabricius and T. vitticornis Karny. A previously recorded species, Stenchaetothrips bambusae (Shumsher) is excluded from the Japanese fauna.
