REVIEW OF LEAF BEETLES OF THE SUBGENUS HYPERICIA BEDEL, 1899 (COLEOPTERA: CHRYSOMELIDAE: CHRYSOLINA) FROM EAST ASIA

The East Palaearctic group of species in the subgenus Hypericia Bedel, 1899 (genus Chrysolina Motschulsky, 1860) is reviewed. Chrysolina (H.) nikkoensis (Jacoby, 1885) is first recorded for Kurile Islands and the Russian fauna, its type specimens studied and redescription is provided. Chrysolina (Hypericia) changbaishana sp. n. is described from Jilin Province of China; it differs from Ch. (H.) difficilis (Motschulsky, 1860) by smaller size, last abdominal ventrite without depression and narrow lateral calli of pronotum.

Three amazing new species of the genus Chrysolina (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Chrysomelinae) from China

Three new species of the genus Chrysolina Motschulsky, 1860, namely Сh. caspari sp. n., Ch. melchiori sp. n., and Ch. balthazari sp. n. are described from Sichuan and Yunnan Provinces of China. These species have rare or unique features. In Ch. caspari sp. n. the shape of the last maxillary palpomere (it is shorter and narrower than the penultimate one) is a rare case in the genus Chrysolina. Among Chinese species, this shape of maxillary palpi is known only in one species, Ch. pieli Chen, 1936. In Ch. melchiori sp. n. the relief of elytral surface (strongly reticulated irregular funnels bearing a puncture at the bottom, separated by smooth intervals) is unique for the genus Chrysolina. In Ch. balthazari sp. n. the relief of elytra (alternation of wide convex intervals between pairs of rows and very narrow flat or slightly convex intervals between rows of one pair) is well distinguishable from most Chrysolina members. Due to this feature, the new species can only be close to Ch. jinxiaoae Ge in: Daccordi, Ge, Cui, Yang, 2011 from North Sichuan. Photographs of habitus, external characters, and male aedeagi are presented.

Museomics reveals evolutionary history of Oreina alpine leaf beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)

AbstractThe monophyletic status of the genus Oreina as well as its phylogenetic relation to the closely related genera Chrysolina, Crosita and Cyrtonus has been debated for several decades. To assess the status of the genus and understand its evolutionary history, we performed a museomics study on 148 museum specimens belonging to 25 of the 28 described Oreina species as well as 19 other chrysomelid species, mainly from the genus Chrysolina. Using innovative molecular methods relying on hyRAD hybridization capture, we succeeded in recovering 2235 shared nuclear loci. Phylogenomic analyses clearly demonstrated that Oreina species form a clade separated from Chrysolina. These analyses also revealed the position of Chrysolina fastuosa outside of the genus Chrysolina, supporting the following taxonomic status updates: Fasta stat. rev., Fasta fastuosa comb. nov. Within the genus Oreina, we further propose the synonymization of Oreina (Frigidorina) syn. n. and Oreina (Virgulatorina) syn. n. with Oreina (Chrysochloa). Divergence time and ancestral range estimations suggested that Oreina originated approximately 53 Ma in the Alps. Ancestral host plant reconstruction revealed key shifts during Oreina diversification. Overall, our study reinforces the importance of museum collections for molecular analysis and the effectiveness of hybridization capture approaches for conducting phylogenomic studies and finely investigating controversial taxonomic debates.

A new species of the subgenus Timarchoptera Motschulsky, 1860 of the genus Chrysolina Motschulsky, 1860 (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae)

A new species of the subgenus Timarchoptera of the genus Chrysolina is described from the Russian Far East (Khabarovsk Krai). The new species is found 1500 km east of the previously known eastern boundary of the range of the subgenus. The remaining species are distributed in the Altai, the Sayans, Transbaikalia, and N Mongolia. A key of all known species and subspecies of the subgenus Timarchoptera is compiled, and a distribution map is presented.

Description of a new species of the genus Chrysolina (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) from Honshu, and notes on records of Chrysolina aeruginosa in Japan

A new species of the genus Chrysolina Motschulsky, 1860 from Nagano Prefecture, Honshu, Japan is described as Chrysolina (Allohypericia) orochi sp. nov. with detailed illustrations of the male and female genitalia, description of larva and pupa, and record of its host plant, Artemisia capillaris Thunberg (Asteraceae). Chrysolina (Allohypericia) aeruginosa (Faldermann, 1835) is excluded from Japanese fauna based on revision of the previously published records.

A New Unusual Subgenus of the Genus Chrysolina (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Chrysomelinae) from the Highland Forests of China, Yunnan Province

A new subgenus of the genus Chrysolina Motschulsky, 1860, endemic to Yunnan Province of China, Ch. (Volosatik subgen. nov.) is described. All species inhabit highland forests. Seven species, including four species new to science, are recognized: Chrysolina fascinatrix Lopatin, 1998, Ch. liqingzhaoae Daccordi et Ge, 2011, Ch. wangi Lopatin, 2005, Ch. igori sp. nov., Ch. marinae sp. nov., Ch. genriki sp. nov., and Ch. ilyakabaki sp. nov. The representatives of this new subgenus are characterised by a small, broadly oval, convex, shining body with metallic dorsum, with maxillary palpus narrow, similar in both sexes, with pronotal lateral impressions wide and shallow or obsolete, without numerous large punctures, with elytral puncture rows paired, mostly regular, intervals flat, with tarsomeres 1–3 with entire sole, rather narrow in both sexes, with aedeagus bearing sensilla of different types ventro-laterally near apex, flagellum narrow. Photographs of habitus and male aedeagus are presented.

Two new species of the subgenus Pleurosticha of the genus Chrysolina (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) from the mountains of southern Siberia (Altai and Tyva)

Two new species from the subgenus Pleurosticha of the genus Chrysolina are described from the mountains of southern Siberia (Russia): Ch. reshetnikovi sp. nov. (Republic of Altai) and Ch. borisi sp. nov. (Republic of Tyva). Chrysolina reshetnikovi sp. nov. has a slightly convex body, a blue-green coloration of the upper side, regular puncture rows of the elytra and mostly flat elytral intervals, which distinguish this species from all species of the subgenus, except for Ch. shapkini Mikhailov et Gus’kova, 2013. The main distinguishing features of the male of the new species from Ch. shapkini are the strongly broadened tarsomeres 1–3, the pygidium with an impression along its entire length, the last abdominal sternite with a semicircular depression, and the apex of the aedeagus bent at 90°. Chrysolina borisi sp. nov. has a convex small body, black coloration of the upper side, femora and tibiae, regular puncture rows of the elytra and slightly convex elytral intervals, and the aedeagus near the apex with a narrow protrusion of the lateral side directed toward the aedeagus base.

New and little known representatives of the genus Chrysolina Motschulsky, 1860 (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) from China

Chrysolina tshingilica sp. n. is described from Chinggil (Qinghe) county in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It is the first representative of subgenus Arctolina Kontkanen, 1959 in the Chinese part of Altai. Slightly broadened male tarsi, flat intervals and confused rows of elytral punctures readily distinguish new species from known Arctolina. Lectotypes of Chrysolina lobicollis Fairmaire, 1887 and Ch. pubitarsis Bechyné, 1950 are designated and redescribed; both species belongs to the subgenus Allohypericia Bechyné, 1950. Ch. lobicollis Fairmaire, 1887 is resurrected from synonymy with Ch. (Anopachys) aurichalcea (Gebler, 1825) and synonymised with Ch. aeruginosa poricollis (Motschulsky, 1860); Ch. pubitarsis stat. resurr. is resurrected from synonymy with Ch. (Hypericia) difficilis ussuriensis (Jacobson, 1901).

New contributions to the molecular systematics and the evolution of host-plant associations in the genus Chrysolina (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, Chrysomelinae).

The taxonomic circumscription of the large and diverse leaf beetle genus Chrysolina Motschulsky is not clear, and its discrimination from the closely related genus Oreina Chevrolat has classically been controversial. In addition, the subgeneric arrangement of the species is unstable, and proposals segregating Chrysolina species into new genera have been recently suggested. In this context, the availability of a phylogenetic framework would provide the basis for a stable taxonomic system, but the existing phylogenies are based on few taxa and have low resolution. In the present study we perform a phylogenetic analysis based on mitochondrial (cox1 and rrnL) and nuclear (H3) DNA sequences from a sample of fifty-two Chrysolina species representing almost half of the subgeneric diversity of the group (thirty out of sixty-five subgenera) and most of the morphological, ecological and karyological variation in the genus. In addition, five Oreina species from two subgenera have also been analysed. The resulting phylogeny is used to evaluate some of the most relevant taxonomic hypotheses for Chrysolina, and also to reconstruct its ancestral host plant associations in a Bayesian framework. Our findings support the paraphyly of Chrysolina as currently defined due to the inclusion of Oreina, the monophyly of the Chrysolina (plus Oreina) species including the divergent Chrysolina (Polysticta) vigintimaculata (Clark, 1864), and enable inferences of deep-level evolutionary relationships among the studied subgenera. The plant family Lamiaceae is inferred as the ancestral host of the study group, whose evolution is characterized by continuous host-shifting among pre-existing host plant families. Some Chrysolina clades include mixtures of species with different levels of diet breadth, indicating that niche width has varied through time.

THE FAUNA OF PEST CHRYSOMELINAE (СOLEOPTERA: СHRYSOMELIDAE) OF NORTH-EASTERN PART OF AZERBAIJAN

Abstract. An annotated list of beetles of the subfamily Chrysomelinae of Kuba-Khachmaz Region of Azerbaijan is provided for the first time. In total 18 species were found, 5 of which are new records to Azerbaijan and 4 to Kuba-Khachmaz Region. Also, among these beetles such a serious pests were recorded as Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say, Chrysolina menthastri Suffr., Chrysomela populi L., Chrysomela vigintipunctata Scop., Qastrophysa polygoni L., Phaedon cochleariae F. which are harmful to both forest and agricultural ecosystems. Methods. Collection of eggs, larvae, pupae and adults was carried out by examination of wild and cultivated plants, soil excavation as well as mowing a net for wild plants and trees.To determine leaf beetles used classification and nomenclature of prof. L.N. Medvedeva and prof. D.S. Shapiro. Results. As a result of research conducted in Cuba-Khachmaz Region 18 species are recorded. To clarify the current state of fauna and nature of the propagation of leaf beetles injuring agricultural plants in the region, and to establish links with certain environmental conditions and rationalization measures against the most harmful species, the importance of finding the distribution of leaf beetles on individual habitats and on the basis of the materials give some data on the biological and ecological features in the territory of Cuba-Khachmaz Region. Main conclucasions . Leaf beetles registered for Cuba-Khachmaz Region of Azerbaijan belong to 8 genera and 18 species of the subfamily Chrysomelinae: 8 species of the genus Chrysolina, 2 species of Chrysomela, 1 species of Colaphellus, 2 species of Entomoscelis, 1 species of Qastrophysa, 2species of Phratora and 2 species of Phaedon. Among them, 3 species are recorded for the first time for the fauna of Azerbaijan and 4 species for the fauna of Cuba- Khachmaz Region.

Chrysolina didymata (Scriba, 1791) is repeatedly recorded from Ukraine (Kamianets-Podilskyi), Ch. cuprina (Duftschmid, 1825) is recorded from the South Urals (Bashkiria) for the second time, Ch. oirota Lopatin, 1990 is recorded from Russia (W. Altai), Ch. staphylaea sharpi (Fowler, 1890) is recorded from Russia (the Kandalaksha Bay coast) for the first time. The presence of Ch. roddi in Lipetsk Province (the Galichia Gora Nature Reserve) is confirmed after the finding of three males. The host plant of this species is found to be Seseli intermedia. Chrysolina daghestanica (Reitter, 1912) is synonymized with Ch. cuprina (Duftschmid, 1825); Ch. dudkoi ivanovskiana Mikhailov, 2000 is synonymized with Ch. dudkoi dudkoi Mikhailov, 2000; Ch. tolli kodarensis is synonymized with Ch. cavigera pirka Takizawa, 1970. The infrasubspecific rank of the variety Ch. hyrcana var. cyanescens Jacobson, 1894 is confirmed. The neotype of Ch. sahlbergii (Menetries, 1832) is designated. The systematic position of Ch. arctoalpina Mikhailov, 2006, Ch. kholsunica Mikhailov, 2001, Ch. kuznetzowi (Jacobson, 1897), Ch. soiota khakassa Mikhailov, 2002, Ch. cuprina dilecta Bechyne, 1952, Ch. poretzkyi (Jacobson, 1897), Ch. seriepunctata (Weise, 1887), and Ch. ambulans (Faldermann, 1835) is discussed. The authorship and date of the original publication of one name are improved, namely: Chrysomela discipennis Menetries, 1848.

Composition of the subgenus Zeugotaenia, genus Chrysolina (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae), and examination of the nomenclatural types

Zeugotaenia Motschulsky, 1860 is resurrected as a valid name for the subgenus of Chrysolina with the type species Chrysomela limbata Fabricius, 1775. Diagnosis of the subgenus is compiled. Neotypes of Chrysomela limbata and Ch. limbifera Kuster, 1846, and lectotypes of Chrysomela findelii Suffrian, 1851, Ch. hochhuthii Suffrian, 1851, and Ch. discipennis Faldermann, 1835 are designated. The types of Chrysomela limbata jenisseiensis Breit, 1920 and Chrysolina limbata kavani Bechyne, 1950 and the topotypes of Chrysomela limbata luigionii Depoli, 1936 are examined. Chrysolina furva Peyerimhoff, 1926 and Ch. dohrnii Fairmaire, 1865 do not belong to the subgenus Zeugotaenia.

An illustrated key to the species and subspecies of Chrysolina Motschulsky, distributed in Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus, and the Baltic countries, is given and provided with data on the distribution and host plants. The publication includes three parts. The present, first part provides a key to 56 species with developed hind wings.

On Latvian Chrysomelinae (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae): 4. Genus Chrysolina Motschulsky, 1860

The current paper presents faunal, ecological and bibliographical information on the leafbeetle genus Chrysolina Motschulsky, 1860 of Latvia. A total of 1,132 specimens were reviewed. The bibliographical analysis of Latvian Chrysolina was made for the first time. Three species, Chrysolina rufa (Duftschmid, 1825), Ch. fuliginosa galii (Weise, 1884) and Ch. Quadrigemina (Suffrian, 1851) were excluded from the list of Latvian Coleoptera. The annotated list of 21 species of Latvian Chrysolina Motschulsky, 1860 is presented.

A contribution to the knowledge of leaf beetles of the subgenus Arctolina, genus Chrysolina (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae)

The taxonomic position of some forms of the subgenus Arctolina Kontkanen from the Urals and Altai, whose types had not been examined, remained unclear after the recent revision. As a result of comparison of the original descriptions of Chrysolina poretzkyi and Ch. kuznetzowi with morphometric indices of the Ural forms from the related subgenera Arctolina and Pleurosticha, both these species were referred to the subgenus Arctolina. Ch. poretzkyi is redescribed based on males, and the existence of the alpine and piedmontane forms of this species is discussed. Lectotype of Chrysolina cyanella is designated; Ch. teleuta is considered a junior synonym of this name.

A review of species of the subgenus Taeniosticha Motsch., genus Chrysolina Motsch. (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae), distributed in the Dzungar Ata Tau and Tien Shan Mt. Ranges, with descriptions of two new species

Species of the subgenus Taeniosticha, genus Chrysolina, from the Dzungar Ala Tau, Northern and Central Tien Shan, are revised. A key to the species and figures of the aedeagus of each species are given. Two new species, Chrysolina klimenkoi sp. n. and Ch. sairannurica sp. n., are described from Southeastern Kazakhstan and Northwestern China. Two new species-groups are distinguished: the Ch. alatavica species-group distributed in the Dzungar Ala Tau and Boro-Khoro Mountain Ranges, and the Ch. tianshanica species-group with its members occurring in the Northern and Central Tien Shan. A scheme of the species distribution is given.

New data on the systematics of leaf-beetle genus Chrysolina (Coleoptera, Chrysomelinae) from the Palaearctic region

Chrysolina przewalskii (Jacobson, 1895) and Ch. lucidula Chen, 1934 are redescribed based on the type specimens. Neotype of Ch. przewalskii is designated. Ch. daccordii Lopatin, 2000 is a new junior synonym of Ch. juldusana (Lopatin, 1962); Ch. daosana Lopatin, 2007 is a new junior synonym of Ch. tani Lopatin, 1998; Ch. burchana Lopatin, 1998 is a new junior synonym of Ch. przewalskii (Jacobson, 1895). Ch. lucidula Chen, 1934 described from a mislabeled specimen is a new junior synonym of the South European Ch. lucida (Olivier, 1807). Ch. hyrcana var. cyanescens (Jacobson, 1894) is synonymized with Ch. circumducta (Menetries, 1848) and is merely a color form of the latter species.
