Genome-wide mapping of quantitative trait loci that can be used in marker-assisted selection for resistance to bacterial cold water disease in two commercial rainbow trout breeding populations

Bacterial cold water disease (BCWD), caused by Flavobacterium psychrophilum, is a frequent and problematic disease in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) aquaculture. A focus of our research is to improve genetic resistance against this disease in commercial populations. Commercial rainbow trout breeding is complicated by multiple populations that spawn naturally at different times of the year and often multiple year-classes are maintained. Previously, we found that resistance to BCWD in the 2013 year-class (YC) of the Troutlodge May spawning breeding population was controlled by oligogenic inheritance of five to six moderate to large effect QTL and many small effect loci. In the current study, we performed genome-wide association analyses using rainbow trout from YC 2015 and YC 2016 strains that were separated as two closed breeding populations for seven generations. Our results confirmed that resistance to BCWD in the even-year strain (YC 2016) is also controlled by oligogenic inheritance of nine QTLs with moderate-large effects that individually explained 2.1% - 34.7% of the additive genetic variance. The nine QTL regions detected in YC 2016 strain jointly explained up to 88% of the additive genetic variance and the five detected QTLs in YC 2015 strain jointly explained up to 61% of the genetic variance. The largest effect and most significant QTL is shared between the two YC strains on chromosome Omy25. This QTL was previously shown to be useful for marker-assisted selection (MAS) in the odd-year strain and it should also be the best candidate for MAS in the even-year strain. On the other hand, two other moderate-large effect QTL were not shared by the two YC strains, demonstrating that differences in the trait genetic architecture can exist between populations that were originated from the same source due to founders' effect and genetic drift in small populations.

Genetic Diversity and Structure of Quercus hondae, a Rare Evergreen Oak Species in Southwestern Japan

Conservation of rare species is essential for maintaining ecosystem function. Quercus hondae is a rare evergreen oak species (Cyclobalanopsis) endemic to Japan. This species is found in several locations in Southwestern Japan; small populations remain in the tutelary forests of the Japanese shrine. To evaluate the genetic diversity and phylogeographic structure of this rare species, 11 microsatellite loci and chloroplast DNA sequences are analyzed for 12 populations of Q. hondae and 8 populations of the more widespread congeneric species, Q. glauca. It is found that heterozygosity at both the population and species level is substantially lower in Q. hondae than in Q. glauca. Genetic differentiation among populations of Q. hondae was high, in contrast to Q. glauca, in which populations exhibit largely insignificant differentiation. STRUCTURE analysis shows that at K = 7, the clusters largely corresponded to major predefined populations. This study suggests that there is little gene flow among extant Q. hondae populations and that Q. hondae is genetically differentiated due to the greater effect of genetic drift in small populations. This pattern is in sharp contrast to that of a more common congeneric species, which will be an important consideration in the conservation of Q. hondae.

Random Genetic Drift: A Non-directional Force of Evolution

Evolution is a corner stone of biology. In terms of genetics, it is defined as a change in genetic composition of populations. A population has two attributes: Gene frequency proportion of different alleles of a gene in a population; Gene pool- sum total of genes in the reproductive gametes of a population (considered as gametic pool). When the population is evolving and under-going microevolutionary changes, different elemental forces operate to bring about these changes: mutation, natural selection, migration and random genetic drift. The first three forces have one quality in common, they usually operate in directional fashion to change allele frequencies progressively from one value to the other. When other factors are not opposing, these factors can lead to fixation of one allele and elimination of others. In case polymorphism is balanced, they can lead to equilibrium between two or more alleles. On the other hand, there is another factor that brings about the changes in allele frequency in nondirectional manner and has no predictive constancy from generation to generation. It is known as random genetic drift which arises from variable sampling of gene pool in each generation. It operates in small populations and causes allele frequency changes due to chance events causing random fluctuation in allele frequency occurring because of sampling errors. Conservation genetics of relict tropical species of Magnolia (section Macrophylla)

Special conservation efforts should be made for relict species, as they usually have small population sizes and restricted distributions, placing them in critical extinction risk. To achieve conservation, information about genetic diversity distribution is needed. Here, using nine nuclear microsatellites, we analyzed 23 populations of five recently described species of Magnolia distributed in Mexico, which were previously assigned to Magnolia dealbata. We aimed to determine the level of genetic diversity and the distribution of genetic variation and proposed conservation measures. Compared to other endemic and relict species, we found a moderate level of genetic diversity in most populations; however, we identified two populations with no genetic variation. Additionally, we found evidence of positive values of inbreeding likely due to geitonogamy. We found a strong population structure, low effective population size, and no evidence of bottlenecks. Patterns of genetic differentiation did not support the morphological distinction of five species, so we hypothesized that the gene pools may instead represent well-differentiated populations of a single species. We argue that the pattern of genetic differentiation is explained by the natural fragmentation of the cloud forests after glaciation events, and the effects of genetic drift in small populations poorly connected by gene flow. Despite the moderate levels of genetic diversity, special attention is needed to guarantee conservation, with emphasis on the populations in the central region of the country as well as the valuable populations identified in the southwestern region.

Impact of prairie fragment size on proportion of females and reproductive success of Lobelia spicata Lam., a gynodioecious species.

Due to ongoing human impacts, plant species increasingly occur in landscapes that are highly fragmented, with remaining natural habitats occupying small areas, resulting in populations that are smaller and more isolated than in previous time periods. This changed metapopulation structure is expected to have negative impacts on seed production. For example, the proportion of female plants within gynodioecious populations may be more volatile due to genetic drift in small populations associated with small habitat fragments, with concomitant impacts on seed production. My aims were to determine: (i) if variation in proportion of females is larger in smaller fragments; and (ii) if such changes in female frequency in small fragments result in reduced seed production. Thirty-two populations of Lobelia spicata Lam., a gynodioecious species, were surveyed in 2000, 2001 and 2009 in the tallgrass prairie region of Midwestern North America (Illinois and Indiana, USA). Data were collected for: proportion of female plants, total number of flowering plants (measure of population size), seed set per plant and prairie fragment size (another measure of population size). The proportion of females is more variable in smaller prairie fragments. Seed number per fruit decreases as the proportion of females increases in a population, but only significantly for female plants. The number of flowering plants is positively associated with fruit production for both genders. Populations within larger prairie fragments have higher seed production. The reproductive consequences of habitat fragmentation depend on the plant breeding system. While both sexes were negatively impacted, females were more adversely affected.

Ancestral remnants or peripheral segregates? Phylogenetic relationships of two narrowly endemic Euphrasia species (Orobanchaceae) from the eastern European Alps.

Endemism in mountain ranges is considered to be the result of a number of factors, including restriction to refugia during Pleistocene climate fluctuations. However, isolation in glacial refugia cannot explain the origin of narrowly endemic taxa restricted to formerly heavily glaciated areas. Here, we investigate the phylogeny of two narrowly endemic species, Euphrasia inopinata and E. sinuata (Orobanchaceae), found exclusively in formerly heavily glaciated areas of the eastern European Alps. As both species are diploid and very similar to the widespread (allo)polyploid E. minima, we test whether the restricted distributions of E. inopinata and E. sinuata are relictual, i.e. the two species are ancestral diploid remnants of a polyploid complex, or whether they are derived, i.e. the two species are peripheral segregates of a more widespread diploid. Based on internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequence and amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) fingerprint data it is shown that E. inopinata and E. sinuata, whose diploid ploidy level is confirmed for all analysed individuals via flow cytometry, are phylogenetically closely related to diploid E. alpina s. l. (series Alpinae) instead of E. minima (series Parviflorae). In addition, there is no evidence that these two diploid species participated in the formation of allotetraploid E. minima. Thus, E. inopinata and E. sinuata are interpreted as peripheral segregates of the widespread E. alpina s. l. Shifts in pollination system from allogamy in E. alpina s. l. to autogamy in E. inopinata and E. sinuata, genetic drift in small populations and geographic isolation at the periphery of the range of E. alpina s. str. probably contributed to the morphological and ecological differentiation of E. inopinata and E. sinuata.

Mitogenome evolution in the last surviving woolly mammoth population reveals neutral and functional consequences of small population size.

The onset of the Holocene was associated with a global temperature increase, which led to a rise in sea levels and isolation of the last surviving population of woolly mammoths on Wrangel Island. Understanding what happened with the population's genetic diversity at the time of the isolation and during the ensuing 6000 years can help clarify the effects of bottlenecks and subsequent limited population sizes in species approaching extinction. Previous genetic studies have highlighted questions about how the Holocene Wrangel population was established and how the isolation event affected genetic diversity. Here, we generated high‐quality mitogenomes from 21 radiocarbon‐dated woolly mammoths to compare the ancestral large and genetically diverse Late Pleistocene Siberian population and the small Holocene Wrangel population. Our results indicate that mitogenome diversity was reduced to one single haplotype at the time of the isolation, and thus that the Holocene Wrangel Island population was established by a single maternal lineage. Moreover, we show that the ensuing small effective population size coincided with fixation of a nonsynonymous mutation, and a comparative analysis of mutation rates suggests that the evolutionary rate was accelerated in the Holocene population. These results suggest that isolation on Wrangel Island led to an increase in the frequency of deleterious genetic variation, and thus are consistent with the hypothesis that strong genetic drift in small populations leads to purifying selection being less effective in removing deleterious mutations.

Reproductive isolation, gene flow and speciation in the former Coffea subgenus: a review

The former Coffea subgenus is a species complex showing qualitative gene flow and reproductive barriers between species. Such qualitative gene flow allowed its evolution over time, particularly during the successive forest expansion-regression cycles in relation with glaciation periods. The present paper reviews the main botanical, geographical and genetic characteristics of the Coffea genus and then focuses on the former Coffea subgenus. Its broad distribution in Africa, Madagascar and Mascarene Islands is related to the high diversity of ecological situations. The importance of sympatry and parapatry cases and their role on gene flow possibilities between species is then underlined in the paper. Such gene flow is nevertheless partially limited by reproductive barriers: flowering date, frequency of hybrid F1 emergence, as well as the vigor and fertility of such hybrids. When hybridization occurs, distortion of segregation and disruptive selection would allow qualitative flow of non-adaptative genes, thus limiting the effect of genetic drift in small populations. The last part of the paper defines the notion of metaspecies in the case of the former Coffea by extension of the concept of metapopulation to species. The evolution over time of a metaspecies is finally discussed in relation with sympatry situations, gene flow possibilities and forest fragmentation.

A direct assessment of realized seed and pollen flow within and between two isolated populations of the food-deceptive orchid Orchis mascula.

Gene flow can counteract the loss of genetic diversity caused by genetic drift in small populations. For this reason, clearly understanding gene flow patterns is of the highest importance across fragmented landscapes. However, gene flow patterns are not only dependent upon the degree of spatial isolation of fragmented populations, but are also dependent upon the life-history traits of the species. Indeed, habitat fragmentation effects appear especially unpredictable for food-deceptive orchid species, because of their highly specialised seed and pollen dispersal mechanisms. In this study we used amplified fragment length polymorphism markers and subsequent parentage and spatial autocorrelation analysis to quantify the extent and the patterns of realized gene flow within and between two adjacent fragmented populations of the food-deceptive Orchis mascula. We observed considerable gene flow between both populations, occurring mainly through pollen dispersal. Seed dispersal, on the other hand, was mainly limited to the first few meters from the mother plant in both populations, although at least one among-population seed dispersal event was observed. This, in turn, resulted in a significant spatial genetic structure for both populations. Although genetic diversity was high in both populations and mainly outcrossing occurred, reproductive output was strongly skewed toward a limited number of successful adult plants. These observed patterns are likely due to the different pollinator behaviour associated with food-deceptive plants. We conclude that these populations can be considered viable under their current fragmented state.

The Influence of Natural Variation in Population Size on Ecological and Quantitative Genetics of the Endangered Endemic PlantHypericum cumulicola

Premise of research. Genetic variation for ecologically important traits is necessary for populations to adapt to environmental change. Many authors have called for a greater emphasis on directly measuring quantitative genetic variation in rare species, which are expected to have reduced amounts of genetic variation due to genetic drift in small populations. The extent of among-population differentiation for quantitative traits may also help to evaluate the likelihood that genetic rescue/translocation will be a successful conservation strategy. Despite these merits, relatively few studies measure quantitative genetic variation for ecologically important traits as a function of population size.Methodology. Abundant polymorphisms at the microsatellite locus LEI0258 in indigenous chickens

The chicken major histocompatibility complex (MHC) has abundant SNP and indels, and is closely related with host genetic resistance or susceptibility to disease. The LEI0258 locus is the most variable in the MHC region, and is a useful marker in reflecting the variability of MHC. In this study, we applied the LEI0258 microsatellite marker to investigate polymorphism of MHC in Chinese indigenous chickens. The size of LEI0258 fragments in 1,617 individuals from 33 Chinese chicken breeds was detected by capillary electrophoresis, and 213 samples with different fragment sizes were further sequenced. A total of 69 alleles ranging from 193 to 489 bp were found, including 21 novel alleles and 28 private alleles that existed in only one breed. Three alleles, 249 bp (7.04%), 489 bp (6.57%), and 309 bp (6.10%), were the most frequent in the indigenous chickens. A 489-bp novel allele was unique in Chinese local chicken breeds. Three indels and 4 SNP of upstream/downstream of 2 repeat regions (R13/R12) were found. Abundant variations indicate high genetic diversity at the MHC region in indigenous chickens. Rare alleles are vulnerable to genetic drift in small populations, and can be used as molecular markers for monitoring the dynamic conservation of many indigenous breeds.

Surfing downhill: when should population range expansion be characterized by reductions in fitness?

Deleterious mutations are found in all populations. Their existence at low frequencies is easily understood, but explaining how they reach high frequencies has long been a challenging problem for population geneticists and evolutionary biologists. Some cases of apparently deleterious alleles are explained by pleiotropy or environmental context dependence, but for universally deleterious alleles, two mechanisms are generally invoked to explain how they can reach high frequencies: (i) genetic drift in small populations and (ii) 'hitchhiking' (sensu Maynard Smith J, Haigh J, Genetical Research, 1974, 23, 23-35) involving tight linkage to beneficial mutations. However, these oft-cited explanations do not immediately resolve the problem because many real populations of interest have population sizes and recombination rates that are large enough to render it nearly impossible for all but the most weakly deleterious (i.e. nearly neutral) mutations to establish and persist. Furthermore, both mechanisms are usually silent about patterns of intraspecific variation in mutation load. In this issue, Peischl S, Dupanloup I, Kirkpatrick M, Excoffier L (Molecular Ecology, 2013) develop and explore a mechanism that puts drift and hitchhiking of deleterious mutations into a specific spatial and demographic context: range expansions. Importantly, their findings provide a plausible explanation for puzzling empirical patterns, such as the paradoxical observation that genotypes at the leading edge of a range expansion are sometimes less fit than those in the ancestral range (when fitness is assessed in a common environment).

Basal metabolic rate can evolve independently of morphological and behavioural traits

Quantitative genetic analyses of basal metabolic rate (BMR) can inform us about the evolvability of the trait by providing estimates of heritability, and also of genetic correlations with other traits that may constrain the ability of BMR to respond to selection. Here, we studied a captive population of zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) in which selection lines for male courtship rate have been established. We measure BMR in these lines to see whether selection on male sexual activity would change BMR as a potentially correlated trait. We find that the genetic correlation between courtship rate and BMR is practically zero, indicating that the two traits can evolve independently of each other. Interestingly, we find that the heritability of BMR in our population (h(2)=0.45) is markedly higher than was previously reported for a captive zebra finch population from Norway. A comparison of the two studies shows that additive genetic variance in BMR has been largely depleted in the Norwegian population, especially the genetic variance in BMR that is independent of body mass. In our population, the slope of BMR increase with body mass differs not only between the sexes but also between the six selection lines, which we tentatively attribute to genetic drift and/or founder effects being strong in small populations. Our study therefore highlights two things. First, the evolvability of BMR may be less constrained by genetic correlations and lack of independent genetic variation than previously described. Second, genetic drift in small populations can rapidly lead to different evolvabilities across populations.

Drift load in populations of small size and low density

According to theory, drift load in randomly mating populations is determined by past population size, because enhanced genetic drift in small populations causes accumulation and fixation of recessive deleterious mutations of small effect. In contrast, segregating load due to mutations of low frequency should decline in smaller populations, at least when mutations are highly recessive and strongly deleterious. Strong local selection generally reduces both types of load. We tested these predictions in 13 isolated, outcrossing populations of Arabidopsis lyrata that varied in population size and plant density. Long-term size was estimated by expected heterozygosity at 20 microsatellite loci. Segregating load was assessed by comparing performance of offspring from selfings versus within-population crosses. Drift load was the heterosis effect created by interpopulation outbreeding. Results showed that segregating load was unrelated to long-term size. However, drift load was significantly higher in populations of small effective size and low density. Drift load was mostly expressed late in development, but started as early as germination and accumulated thereafter. The study largely confirms predictions of theory and illustrates that mutation accumulation can be a threat to natural populations.

Variation in Migratory Behavior Influences Regional Genetic Diversity and Structure among American Kestrel Populations (Falco sparverius) in North America

Birds employ numerous strategies to cope with seasonal fluctuations in high-quality habitat availability. Long distance migration is a common tactic; however, partial migration is especially common among broadly distributed species. Under partial migration systems, a portion of a species migrates, whereas the remainder inhabits breeding grounds year round. In this study, we identified effects of migratory behavior variation on genetic structure and diversity of American Kestrels (Falco sparverius), a widespread partial migrant in North America. American Kestrels generally migrate; however, a resident group inhabits the southeastern United States year round. The southeastern group is designated as a separate subspecies (F. s. paulus) from the migratory group (F. s. sparverius). Using mitochondrial DNA and microsatellites from 183 and 211 individuals, respectively, we illustrate that genetic structure is stronger among nonmigratory populations, with differentiation measures ranging from 0.060 to 0.189 depending on genetic marker and analysis approach. In contrast, measures from western North American populations ranged from 0 to 0.032. These findings suggest that seasonal migratory behavior is also associated with natal and breeding dispersal tendencies. We likewise detected significantly lower genetic diversity within nonmigratory populations, reflecting the greater influence of genetic drift in small populations. We identified the signal of population expansion among nonmigratory populations, consistent with the recent establishment of higher latitude breeding locations following Pleistocene glacial retreat. Differentiation of F. s. paulus and F. s. sparverius reflected subtle differences in allele frequencies. Because migratory behavior can evolve quickly, our analyses suggest recent origins of migratory American Kestrel populations in North America.

Reduced MHC and neutral variation in the Galápagos hawk, an island endemic.

BackgroundGenes at the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) are known for high levels of polymorphism maintained by balancing selection. In small or bottlenecked populations, however, genetic drift may be strong enough to overwhelm the effect of balancing selection, resulting in reduced MHC variability. In this study we investigated MHC evolution in two recently diverged bird species: the endemic Galápagos hawk (Buteo galapagoensis), which occurs in small, isolated island populations, and its widespread mainland relative, the Swainson's hawk (B. swainsoni).ResultsWe amplified at least two MHC class II B gene copies in each species. We recovered only three different sequences from 32 Galápagos hawks, while we amplified 20 unique sequences in 20 Swainson's hawks. Most of the sequences clustered into two groups in a phylogenetic network, with one group likely representing pseudogenes or nonclassical loci. Neutral genetic diversity at 17 microsatellite loci was also reduced in the Galápagos hawk compared to the Swainson's hawk.ConclusionsThe corresponding loss in neutral diversity suggests that the reduced variability present at Galápagos hawk MHC class II B genes compared to the Swainson's hawk is primarily due to a founder event followed by ongoing genetic drift in small populations. However, purifying selection could also explain the low number of MHC alleles present. This lack of variation at genes involved in the adaptive immune response could be cause for concern should novel diseases reach the archipelago.

ADAPTIVE CHROMOSOMAL DIVERGENCE DRIVEN BY MIXED GEOGRAPHIC MODE OF EVOLUTION

Chromosomal inversions are ubiquitous in nature and of great significance for understanding adaptation and speciation. Inversions were the first markers used to investigate the genetic structure of natural populations, leading to the concept of coadapted gene complexes and theories concerning founder effects and genetic drift in small populations. However, we still lack elements of a general theory accounting for the origins and distribution of inversions in nature. Here, we use computer simulations to show that a "mixed geographic mode" of evolution involving allopatric separation of populations followed by secondary contact and gene flow generates chromosomal divergence by natural selection under wider conditions than previous hypotheses. This occurs because inversions arising in allopatry contain a full complement of locally adapted genes. Once gene flow ensues, reduced recombination within inversions keeps these favorable genotypic combinations intact, resulting in inverted genomic regions being favored over collinear regions. This process allows inversions to establish to high frequencies. Our model can account for several classic patterns in the geographic distribution of inversions and highlights how selection on standing genetic variation allows rapid chromosomal evolution without the waiting time for new mutations. As inversion differences often separate closely related taxa, mixed modes of divergence could be common.

Genetic structure and seed-mediated dispersal rates of an endangered shrub in a fragmented landscape: a case study for Juniperus communis in northwestern Europe

BackgroundPopulation extinction risk in a fragmented landscape is related to the differential ability of the species to spread its genes across the landscape. The impact of landscape fragmentation on plant population dynamics will therefore vary across different spatial scales. We quantified successful seed-mediated dispersal of the dioecious shrub Juniperus communis in a fragmented landscape across northwestern Europe by using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers. Furthermore we investigated the genetic diversity and structure on two spatial scales: across northwestern Europe and across Flanders (northern Belgium). We also studied whether seed viability and populations size were correlated with genetic diversity.ResultsUnexpectedly, estimated seed-mediated dispersal rates were quite high and ranged between 3% and 14%. No population differentiation and no spatial genetic structure were detected on the local, Flemish scale. A significant low to moderate genetic differentiation between populations was detected at the regional, northwest European scale (PhiPT = 0.10). In general, geographically nearby populations were also genetically related. High levels of within-population genetic diversity were detected but no correlation was found between any genetic diversity parameter and population size or seed viability.ConclusionsIn northwestern Europe, landscape fragmentation has lead to a weak isolation-by-distance pattern but not to genetic impoverishment of common juniper. Substantial rates of successful migration by seed-mediated gene flow indicate a high dispersal ability which could enable Juniperus communis to naturally colonize suitable habitats. However, it is not clear whether the observed levels of migration will suffice to counterbalance the effects of genetic drift in small populations on the long run.

Families of transposable elements, population structure and the origin of species

BackgroundEukaryotic genomes harbor diverse families of repetitive DNA derived from transposable elements (TEs) that are able to replicate and insert into genomic DNA. The biological role of TEs remains unclear, although they have profound mutagenic impact on eukaryotic genomes and the origin of repetitive families often correlates with speciation events. We present a new hypothesis to explain the observed correlations based on classical concepts of population genetics.Presentation of the hypothesisThe main thesis presented in this paper is that the TE-derived repetitive families originate primarily by genetic drift in small populations derived mostly by subdivisions of large populations into subpopulations. We outline the potential impact of the emerging repetitive families on genetic diversification of different subpopulations, and discuss implications of such diversification for the origin of new species.Testing the hypothesisSeveral testable predictions of the hypothesis are examined. First, we focus on the prediction that the number of diverse families of TEs fixed in a representative genome of a particular species positively correlates with the cumulative number of subpopulations (demes) in the historical metapopulation from which the species has emerged. Furthermore, we present evidence indicating that human AluYa5 and AluYb8 families might have originated in separate proto-human subpopulations. We also revisit prior evidence linking the origin of repetitive families to mammalian phylogeny and present additional evidence linking repetitive families to speciation based on mammalian taxonomy. Finally, we discuss evidence that mammalian orders represented by the largest numbers of species may be subject to relatively recent population subdivisions and speciation events.Implications of the hypothesisThe hypothesis implies that subdivision of a population into small subpopulations is the major step in the origin of new families of TEs as well as of new species. The origin of new subpopulations is likely to be driven by the availability of new biological niches, consistent with the hypothesis of punctuated equilibria. SEXUAL SELECTION COUNTERACTS EXTINCTION OF SMALL POPULATIONS OF THE BULB MITES

Genetic drift in small populations can increase frequency of deleterious recessives and consequently lead to inbreeding depression and population extinction. On the other hand, as homozygosity at deleterious recessives increases, they should be purged from populations more effectively by selection. Sexual selection has been postulated to strengthen selection against deleterious mutations, and should thus decrease extinction rate and intensify purging of inbreeding depression. We tested these predictions in the bulb mite Rhizoglyphus robini. We created 100 replicate lines of small populations (five males and five females) and in half of them experimentally removed sexual selection by enforcing monogamy. The lines were propagated for eight generations and then assayed for purging of inbreeding depression. We found that proportion of lines which went extinct was lower with sexual selection than without. We also found evidence for purging of inbreeding depression in the lines with sexual selection, but not in lines without sexual selection. Our results suggest that purging of inbreeding depression was more effective against mutations with relatively large deleterious effects. Thus, although our data clearly indicate a positive impact of sexual selection on short-term survival of bottlenecked populations, long-term consequences are less clear as they may be negatively impacted by accumulation of deleterious mutations of small effect.
