An Aspect-Oriented Approach for Spatial Concerns in Web Applications

The growing availability of on-line geographical information, since the advent of open map servers in the 2000s, originated a new generation of Web applications, those which combine conventional Web functionality with typical features of traditional Geographic Application System (GIS). The rapid growth in number and complexity of Web applications with geo-referenced data together with the need to support fast requirements change, demands for increased modularity. The volatility of some of these changing requirements, both in the scope of their geographic nature or in the period of time in which they are valid, stresses the importance of the applications' modularity. A solution is to take into consideration the crosscutting nature of these requirements and decouple their realization from conventional requirements in separate software modules. This paper proposes an end-to-end Aspect-Oriented approach to deal with spatial requirements from the early stages of applications development throughout to implementation. A significant contribution of this approach is the characterization of the most common spatial requirements in Web-GIS applications. The result is the improvement of the overall application's modularity, thus facilitating its evolution.

Intelligent Web Applications as Future Generation of Web Applications

During the recent years World Wide Web very fast increased a fundamental part in our everyday life. In commerce, personal relationship, the effect of the universal network has wholly changed the way people interact with each other and with machines. The problem is after rising the Artificial Intelligence to presenting human feelings, everything changed including web applications. In this paper, we describe the intelligent web applications as present and future of web applications, moreover we highlight the special features and their roles in increasing intelligence of web applications as well as impact this application in the process development web systems. The goals of this paper led to developers to create smart and modern web applications.

Comparison between SQL and NoSQL Databases and Their Relationship with Big Data Analytics

A key ingredient in the world of cloud computing is a database that can be used by a great number of users. Distributed storage mechanisms become the de-facto method for data storage used by companies for the new generation of web applications. In the world of data storage, NoSQL (usually interpreted as "not only SQL" by developers) database is a growing trend. It is said that NoSQL alternates with the most widely used relational databases for the data storage, but, as the name implies, it does not fully replace the SQL. In this paper we will discuss about SQL and NoSQL databases, comparison of traditional SQL with NoSQL databases for Big Data analytics, NoSQL data models, types of NoSQL data stores, characteristics and features of each data store, advantages and disadvantages of NoSQL and RDBMS.

A brokered Virtual Hub approach for the generation of web applications based on historical maps

Integration between historical maps and current cartography is nowadays recognized of primary importance in many applications (e.g. urban planning, landscape valorisation and preservation, land changes identification). However, due to large variety in Geographical Information (GI) standards and interfaces for data publishing, some technical issues arise for developers when integrating different data for the generation of new web-based applications. In addition, information overload makes difficult their discovery and management: without knowing the specific repository where the data are stored, it is difficult to find the information required. To partially cope with those problems, this paper describes a new brokering-based approach for the generation of web applications based on multi-temporal GI data gathered from different providers. In particular, this new approach is exemplified by a couple of new web applications built on top of the developed solution. Even if the two applications deal both with historical maps, they present significant differences in technical (e.g. libraries, development environment, data formats) and non-technical (e.g. user addressed, user requirements) aspects showing the flexibility of the solution.

Enabling the generation of web applications from mockups

SummaryMockups are widely used to elicit and validate user requirements in web applications, and several intuitive tools have been developed in recent years, actively involving the end user in the requirements solicitation process. However, most current web development approaches and tools discard mockups after the information‐gathering process, abandoning the opportunity to exploit underlying information in them for autogenerating functional web applications. To overcome this limitation, we have devised a method for deriving the database schema and the logic of the web application from the information contained within mockups. In particular, the method gathers clues on how to organize the data and the control flow of the web application by analyzing the structure and relationships of the widgets in the mockup. Based on the proposed method, we have implemented a tool supporting the generation of web applications abiding by the model‐view‐controller architectural pattern. The tool has been evaluated by involving several end users in the development of web applications for different domains.

Lom: Discovering logic flaws within MongoDB-based web applications

Logic flaws within web applications will allow malicious operations to be triggered towards back-end database. Existing approaches to identifying logic flaws of database accesses are strongly tied to structured query language (SQL) statement construction and cannot be applied to the new generation of web applications that use not only structured query language (NoSQL) databases as the storage tier. In this paper, we present Lom, a black-box approach for discovering many categories of logic flaws within MongoDBbased web applications. Our approach introduces a MongoDB operation model to support new features of MongoDB and models the application logic as a mealy finite state machine. During the testing phase, test inputs which emulate state violation attacks are constructed for identifying logic flaws at each application state. We apply Lom to several MongoDB-based web applications and demonstrate its effectiveness.

Metodología de representación de software orientada al desarrollo ágil de aplicaciones: Un enfoque arquitectural

La generación de aplicaciones web representa la ejecución de tareas repetitivas, este proceso involucra la determinación de estructuras de información, la generación de diferentes tipos de componentes y finalmente tareas de despliegue y puesta a punto de las aplicaciones. En muchas aplicaciones de este tipo los componentes generados son coincidentes entre aplicación y aplicación. Las tendencias actuales de la ingeniería de software como MDE, MDD o MDA pretenden automatizar la generación de aplicaciones sobre la base de la estructuración de un modelo que permita aplicar transformaciones con la consecución de la aplicación. Este documento pretende plasmar una base arquitectural que facilite la generación de estas aplicaciones apoyándose en la arquitectura dirigida por modelos, pero sin desconocer la existencia y actualidad de modelos arquitecturales preexistentes a las tendencias mencionadas en este resumen.

A Tool Supporting End-User Development of Access Control in Web Applications

End-user development (EUD) is drawing an increasing attention due to the necessity of users to frequently extend and personalize their applications. In particular, EUD in the context of Web (EUDWeb) is focusing on technologies capable of supporting development tasks that the end-user feels more complex. However, although the specification and implementation of access control is perceived as a particularly complex task, little efforts have been made to support it within current EUDWeb environments. Thus, in this paper we propose an EUDWeb framework and tool for the specification and the generation of web applications embedding access control mechanisms. We extended a previous mockup-based EUDWeb approach, by introducing visual assistance mechanisms enabling the specification of role-based access control policies, and their integration within the application logic. The usability of the proposed framework has been evaluated by means of a user study, in which we have shown that a group of heterogeneous end-users could proficiently use the proposed framework to develop meaningful web applications, some of which including access control functionalities.

Transaction Management Techniques and Practices in Current Cloud Computing Environments : A Survey

Distributed database management systems (DBMSs)have limited capacity to manage overhead of distributed transactions due to certain failures. These types of failures don't guarantee the enforcement of transactional properties and which reduces the scalability and availability of these systems. Research in this area proved that scaling out whiling providing consistency of transactions and guaranteeing availability is the presence of different failures in distributed computing environment is not feasible. As a result, the database community have used vertical scaling rather than horizontal scaling. Moreover changes in data access patterns resulting from new generation of web applications with high scalability and availability guarantees weaker consistency. In this paper we have analyses that how different systems such as ElasTras, Mstore, Sinfonia, ecStore and Gstore provide scalable transactional data access in cloud computing environment. We have also discussed transactions management (TM) in Gstore in detail and compared with other techniques and protocols used in current cloud based systems.

Evaluating the perceived and estimated quality in use of Web 2.0 applications

Web 2.0 refers to a new generation of web applications where individuals are able to participate, collaborate, and share created artefacts. Despite the fact that Web 2.0 applications are widely used for both educational and professional purposes, a consolidated methodology for their evaluation is still not available. This paper presents and discusses the results of two empirical studies on the case of mind mapping and diagramming Web 2.0 applications. Both studies employed logging actual use method to measure the estimated quality in use, while the retrospective thinking aloud method and an online questionnaire were applied to assess the perceived quality in use. Achieved analytical results showed that the results of the estimated and the perceived quality in use match partially, which indicates that quality in use should be measured with both subjective and objective instruments. The work presented in this paper is the first step towards a comprehensive methodology for evaluating the quality in use of Web 2.0 applications. Consequently, the usage of the proposed quality in use model for other types of Web 2.0 applications as well as contexts of use needs to be investigated in order to draw generalizable conclusions.

The DynaRIA tool for the comprehension of Ajax web applications by dynamic analysis

Thanks to the fast and growing diffusion of Rich Internet Applications (RIAs), the user experience in the Web 2.0 is becoming more and more appealing and user friendly. RIAs are indeed a new generation of Web applications that exploit a combination of technologies and new development patterns for providing a more interactive, responsive and dynamic user experience. Unfortunately, some characteristics of RIAs, such as the heterogeneity of the implementation technologies, as well as the possibility of dynamically generating the code of the application, cause a general worsening of their analyzability and understandability. Consequently, specific analysis techniques and tools are needed for supporting their comprehension effectively. This paper presents an approach for the comprehension of RIAs implemented in Ajax that is based on a tool for dynamic analysis called DynaRIA. The tool provides an integrated environment for tracing application executions and analyzing them from several perspectives. Moreover, the tool is able to abstract several views on the structure and run-time behavior of the application that can be used in various comprehension activities. To show the actual support provided by DynaRIA in different comprehension contexts, four case studies involving two real Ajax applications will be illustrated in the paper. The experimental results showed the usefulness and effectiveness of the tool in comprehension, debugging, testing and quality assessment scenarios.

An MDA Approach for Goal-oriented Requirement Analysis in Web Engineering

Web designers usually ignore how to model real user expectations and goals, mainly due to the large and heterogeneous audience of the Web. This fact leads to websites which are difficult to comprehend by visitors and complex to maintain by designers. In order to ameliorate this scenario, an approach for using the i* modeling framework in Web engineering has been developed in this paper. Furthermore, due to the fact that most of the existing Web engineering approaches do not consider how to derive conceptual models of the Web application from requirements analysis we also propose the use of MDA (Model Driven Architecture) in Web engineering for: (i) the definition of the requirements of a Web application in a Computational Independent Model (CIM), (ii) the description of Platform Independent Models (PIMs), and (iii) the definition of a set of QVT (Query/View/Transformation) transformations for the derivation of PIMs from requirements specification (CIM), thus to enable the automatic generation of Web applications. Finally, we include a sample of our approach in order to show its applicability and we describe a prototype tool as a proof of concept of our research.

Using Open Source Software Components to Implement a Modular Web 2.0 Design for Map-Based Discussions

This paper discusses the research-based origins and modular architecture of an open source geospatial tool that facilitates synchronous individual and group discussions using the medium of a Web map service. The software draws on existing open source geospatial projects and associated libraries and techniques that have evolved as part of the new generation of Web applications. The purpose of the software is discussed, highlighting the fusion of existing open source projects to produce new tools. Two case studies are briefly discussed to illustrate the value an open source approach brings to communities who would remain otherwise outside the reach of proprietary software tools. The paper concludes with comments on the project’s future evolution as an open source participatory mapping platform.

A large‐scale monitoring and measurement campaign for web services‐based applications

AbstractWeb Services (WS) can be considered as the most influent enabling technology for the next generation of web applications. WS‐based application providers will face challenging features related to nonfunctional properties in general and to performance and QoS in particular. Moreover, WS‐based developers have to provide solutions to extend such applications with self‐healing (SH) mechanisms as required for autonomic computing to face the complexity of interactions and to improve availability. Such solutions should be applicable when the components implementing SH mechanisms are deployed on both or only one platform on the WS providers and requesters sides depending on the deployment constraints. Associating application‐specific performance requirements and monitoring‐specific constraints will lead to complex configurations where fine tuning is needed to provide SH solutions. To contribute to enhancing the design and the assessment of such solutions for WS technology, we designed and implemented a monitoring and measurement framework, which is part of a larger Self‐Healing Architectures (SHA) developed during the European WS‐DIAMOND project. We implemented the Conference Management System (CMS), a real WS‐based complex application. We achieved a large‐scale experimentation campaign by deploying CMS on top of SHA on the French grid Grid5000. We experienced the problem as if we were a service provider who has to tune reconfiguration strategies. Development and evaluation of a system enhancing Second Life to support synchronous role‐based collaborative learning

AbstractResearch and commercial interest toward 3D virtual worlds are recently growing because they probably represent the new direction for the next generation of web applications. Although these environments present several features that are useful for informal collaboration, structured collaboration is required to effectively use them in a working or in a didactical setting. This paper presents a system supporting synchronous collaborative learning by naturally enriching Learning Management System services with meeting management and multimedia features. Monitoring and moderation of discussions are also managed at a single group and at the teaching level. The Second Life (SL) environment has been integrated with two ad hoc developed Moodle plug‐ins and SL objects have been designed, modeled, and programmed to support synchronous role‐based collaborative activities. We also enriched SL with tools to support the capturing and displaying of textual information during collaborative sessions for successive retrieval. In addition, the multimedia support has been enhanced with functionalities for navigating multimedia contents. We also report on an empirical study aiming at evaluating the use of the proposed SL collaborative learning as compared with face‐to‐face group collaboration. Results show that the two approaches are statistically undistinguishable in terms of performance, comfort with communication, and overall satisfaction. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Adaptability and Adaptivity in The Generation of Web Applications

This article proposes a generator for adaptive Web applications called GIWA. GIWA‘s objective is to facilitate the automatic execution of the design and the generation of Adaptable Web Applications (AWA). Characteristically, the effort in this work has to be pursued with special attention to both issues applied to AWA: adaptability and adaptivity. The architecture of GIWA is based on three levels: the semantic level, the conceptual level and the generation one. Using GIWA, designers specifies, at the semantic level the features of Web application. The conceptual level focuses on the creation of diagrams in WA-UML language; the extended UML by our new concepts and new design elements for adaptation. At the generation level, GIWA acquires all information about users’ preferences and their access condition. Consequently, the generated pages are adaptable to all these information. An evaluation and a validation of GIWA are given in this article to prove our adaptation.

Spinning the Semantic Web

From the quiet new born days of early 1990s, the World Wide Web has had an exponential growth in the last decade or so. From the original goal of sharing research resources, Web today portrays a virtual world spanning from research to entertainment and e‐commerce. This growth has necessitated substantial changes in the Web model. From the purely syntactic and relatively static framework of HTML, we have moved through DHTML and XML incorporating dynamicity and extensibility, and are now en route semantic frameworks starting with RDF. These allow Web documents to be comprehensible to machines (and not just to humans) allowing software agents to access and process such information on the Web. This leads us to semantic Web, and thus to a generation of Web applications based on Web services, adaptive content delivery, etc. Spinning the Semantic Web is based on papers presented in a seminar in Germany in 2000, and sketches the vario elements of semantic Web, the issues in realising it as well as some visions of the future. The stimulating forward to the book by Tim Berners‐Lee, recently Knighted and widely regarded as the father of the Web, portrays his vision of semantic Web. The chapters explore specific issues such as ontologies, schema languages, annotations, applications, etc. The chapters are largely unorganised and presented without any cross‐linking and most chapters use a fair amount of domain jargon. The book will be of value to those seriously interested in the field.

CBD 아키텍처 기반 e-비즈니스 에이전트 프로토타이핑 시스템

차세대 웹 애플리케이션은 거대하고 복잡하고 유연성을 요구한다. 에이전트 지향 시스템은 이러한 애플리케이션에 큰 가능성을 가지고 있으며, 에이전트는 동적으로 발견할 수 있고, e-서비스를 합성할 수 있고 상호작용을 중재할 수 있다. CBD(Component Based Development)를 통한 소프트웨어 에이전트의 개발은 프로젝트의 개발 속도를 증가시키며, 좀 더 나은 품질을 제공하며 낮은 개발비용으로 성공을 증명할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 컴포넌트와 UML(Unified Modeling Language)을 사용한 소프트웨어 에이전트를 위한 체계적인 개발 프로세스를 제안한다. 일반 에이전트와 e-비즈니스 에이전트의 분류를 통해 식별된 관련 컴포넌트 계층에 대한 ebA-CBD 참조 아키텍처를 제시한다. 또한, UML로 사용한 의미적인 프레임워크에서 에이전트 지향 개념을 기반 함으로써 기존의 에이전트 지향 소프트웨어 광학 방법론의 특징을 고려한 가이드라인으로 ebA-CBD 프로세스를 제안한다. 첫 번째로 에이전트 컴포넌트 명세를 개발하고, 목표, 역할, 상호작용과 아키텍처 모델을 작성한다. 제안된 프로세스에 따라 사례 연구로서 상품정보의 메일링 서비스인 e-CPIMAS(e-Commerce Product Information Mailing Agent System)를 개발한다. 끝으로 비즈니스 애플리케이션과 e-비즈니스 에이전트를 개발하기 위해 그 효율성, 재사용성, 생산성과 품질성 증가를 기대한다. The next generation of web applications will need to be larger, more complex, and flexible Agent-oriented systems have great potential for these e-commerce applications. Agents can dynamically discover and compose e-services and mediate interactions. Development of software agents with CBD (Component Based Development) has proved to be successful in increasing speed to market of development Projects, lowering the development cost and providing better qualify. In this thesis, we propose a systemic development process for software agents using component and UML (Unified Modeling Language). We suggest a etA (e-business Agent) CBD reference architecture for layer the related components through identification and classification of general agent and e-business agent. We also propose the ebA-CBD process that is a guideline to consider the best features of existing agent oriented software engineering methodologies, while grounding agent-oriented concepts in the same underlying semantic framework used by UML. We first developed the agent components specification and modeled it with Goal, Role, Interaction, and Architecture Model. Based on this, we developed e-CPIMAS (e-Commerce Product Information Mailing Agent System) as a case study that provides the product information's mailing service according to proposed process formality. We finally describe how these concepts may assist in increasing the efficiency reusability, productivity and quality to develop the business application and e-business agent.

Recommendations for Metadata Standards for 3D Images on the Web

This paper discusses issues related to the development of standardized metadata schema for 3D images. Challenges are described and a method for analyzing existing metadata schema for still images is suggested as a starting point for finding appropriate elements for 3D images. Elements from 4 metadata schema are compared and analyzed for fit with 3D images.The use of 3D images as information bearing objects is rapidly becoming part of the next generation of web applications. The sooner we begin to build consensus on how best to describe, store, display, preserve and maintain these 3D datasets, the better able we will be to meet increasingly sophisticated user needs. This paper is a beginning attempt to put the issues of how we will do this before the research community at large.
