Calcium oxide enhances the anaerobic co-digestion of excess sludge and plant waste: performance and mechanism

ABSTRACT The study investigates the effect of the oxidant calcium oxide (CaO) on the codigestion of excess sludge (ES) and plant waste (PW) under mesophilic anaerobic conditions to enhance methane production. The findings indicate that CaO significantly elevated methane yield in the codigestion system, with an optimum CaO addition of 6% resulting in a maximum methane production of 461 mL/g volatile solids, which is approximately 1.3 times that of the control group. Mechanistic exploration revealed that CaO facilitated the disintegration of organic matter, enhanced the release of soluble chemical oxygen demand, and increased the concentrations of soluble proteins and polysaccharides within the codigestion substrate. The presence of CaO was conducive to the generation and biological transformation of volatile fatty acids, with a notable accumulation of acetic acid, a smaller carboxylic acid within the VFAs. The proportion of acetate in the CaO-amended group increased to 32.6–36.9%. Enzymatic analysis disclosed that CaO enhanced the activity of hydrolytic and acidogenic enzymes associated with the ES and PW codigestion process but suppressed the activity of coenzyme F420. Moreover, CaO augmented the nutrient load in the fermentation liquid. The study provides an alternative scheme for the efficient resource utilization of ES and PW.

Temperature-dependent microbial mechanism and accumulation of volatile fatty acids in primary sludge pretreated with peroxymonosulfate

For revealing the influence of temperature on volatile fatty acids (VFAs) generation from primary sludge (PS) during the anaerobic fermentation process facilitated by peroxymonosulfate (PMS), five fermentation groups (15, 25, 35, 45, and 55 °C) were designed. The results indicated that the production of VFAs (5148 mg COD/L) and acetic acid (2019 mg COD/L) reached their peaks at 45 °C. High-throughput sequencing technology disclosed that Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Actinobacteria was the dominant phyla, carbohydrate metabolism and membrane transport were the most vigorous at 45 °C. Additionally, higher temperature and PMS exhibit synergistic effects in promoting VFAs accumulation. This study unveiled the mechanism of the effect of the pretreatment of PS with PMS on the VFAs production, which established a theoretical foundation for the production of VFAs.

Potential of Cation Exchange Resin as a Carrier for Anaerobic Consortia in Biohydrogen Fermentation

Cation exchange resin (CER) has been reported to promote sludge fermentation. However, previous studies have typically focused on the effects of CER on sludge properties to enhance fermentation, and the role of CER as a biocarrier for anaerobic consortia during fermentation has been overlooked. Thus, in this study, the potential of gel-type and macro-reticular type CERs to serve as biocarriers in fermentation was investigated. A significant number of anaerobes appeared to be attached to the surfaces of CER during 2-day fermentation. However, an extended fermentation time negatively affected the attachment of anaerobic consortia, suggesting that CER may be a suitable carrier for short-term fermentation processes, such as biohydrogen fermentation. Electrochemical analyses revealed that the electron transfer capacities of CER with attached anaerobes were enhanced after both 2-day and 28-day fermentation periods, with the macro-reticular type CER exhibiting higher electron transfer capacity than the gel-type CER. Fermentation experiments using mixing model substrates with macro-reticular and gel-type CERs with attached anaerobes showed that the macro-reticular type CER was more beneficial for biohydrogen fermentation than the gel-type CER. Further analyses of microbial communities revealed that hydrogen-producing bacteria (i.e., Caloramator, unclassified_f_Caloramatoraceace, and Sporanaerobacter) were more likely to adhere to the macro-reticular type CERs. This outcome confirmed that macro-reticular type CERs have significant potential as a carrier for anaerobic consortia to promote the generation of hydrogen and volatile fatty acids. These findings are expected to provide a reference for using materials as biocarriers to enhance the biohydrogen fermentation of sludge.

Effects of sulfite and freezing co-pretreatment on the volatile fatty acids production of waste activated sludge in anaerobic fermentation

Volatile fatty acids (VFAs) produced during the anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge (WAS) are renewable energy sources. However, the biodegradability of untreated WAS is significantly low, thereby imposing a substantial constraint on the generation of VFAs during anaerobic fermentation of WAS. In this study, the experimental results showed that freezing and sulfite co-pretreatment had a synergism on the disintegration of WAS and the production of VFAs. The optimal freezing temperature for VFAs production were −20 °C, 8 h and sulfite dosage of 1400 mg/L resulted in the VFAs reaching a highest concentration of 627.58 mg/L, which was 17.41 times higher than that of the blank group. In addition, the disintegration effect of WAS has been improved, the concentration of soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD), proteins and polysaccharides were 7.21, 5.56 and 2.58 times than the blank group, respectively. The microbial community analysis revealed an increase of the OUT of co-pretreatment. Also showed that co-pretreatment could increase the abundance of Levilinea, Unclassified_Anaerolineaceae and Blvii28_wastewater_sludge_group, which might increase VFAs production. Furthermore, compared to sulfite pretreatment or freezing pretreatment, the co-pretreatment significantly enhanced the disintegration efficiency of WAS; shortened the hydrolysis required time for WAS; provided the higher concentration of substrates for VFAs production; and improved the overall efficiency of sludge anaerobic fermentation.

Time-dependent interference of surfactants and CeO2/Fe2O3 nanoparticles co-occurrence on the volatile fatty acids biosynthesis during semi-continuous sludge fermentation

Various exogenous contaminants typically coexist in waste activated sludge (WAS), and the long-term impacts of these co-occurring contaminants on WAS anaerobic fermentation and associated mechanisms remain largely unknown. This study reveals that the co-occurrence of surfactants and nanoparticles (NPs, i.e., Fe2O3 and CeO2, frequently detected in sludge) exhibited time-dependent impacts on the volatile fatty acids (VFAs) biosynthesis. Surfactants triggered WAS decomposition and enhanced NPs dispersion, leading to increased exposure of functional anaerobes to NPs toxicity, negatively affecting them. Consequently, key fermentation processes, acidogenic bacterial abundance, and metabolic functions were inhibited in co-occurrence reactors compared to those containing only surfactants in the early stage (before 56 d). Surprisingly, the fermentation systems containing surfactants collapsed subsequently, with VFAs yield at 72 d decreasing by 48.59–71.27 % compared to 56 d. The keystone microbes (i.e., Acidobacteria (16 d) vs Patescibacteria (56 d)) were reshaped, and metabolic traits (i.e., proB involved in intracellular metabolism) were downregulated by 0.05–78.02 % due to reduced microbial adaptive capacity (i.e., quorum sensing (QS)). Partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) analysis suggests that the microbial community was the predominant factor influencing VFAs generation. This study provides new insights into the long-term effects of co-contaminants on the biological treatment of WAS.

Utilization strategy for algal bloom waste through co-digestion with kitchen waste: Comprehensive kinetic and metagenomic analysis

Anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD) with kitchen waste (KW) is an alternative utilization strategy for algal bloom waste (AW). However, the kinetic characteristic and metabolic pathway during this process need to be explored further. This study conducted a comprehensive kinetic and metagenomic analysis for AcoD of AW and KW. A maximum co-digestion performance index (CPI) of 1.13 was achieved under the 12% AW addition. Co-digestion improved the total volatile fatty acids generation and the organic matter transformation efficiency. Kinetic analysis showed that the Superimposed model fit optimally (R2Adj = 0.9988–0.9995). The improvement of the kinetic process by co-digestion was mainly reflected in the increase of the methane production from slowly biodegradable components. Co-digestion enriched the cellulolytic bacterium Clostridium and the hydrogenotrophic methanogenic archaea Methanobacterium. Furthermore, for metagenome analysis, the abundance of key genes concerned in cellulose and lipid hydrolysis, pyruvate and methane metabolism were both increased in co-digestion process. This study provided a feasible process for the utilization of AW produced seasonally and a deeper understanding of the AcoD synergistic mechanism from kinetic and metagenomic perspectives.

Dynamic microbiome disassembly and evolution induced by antimicrobial methylisothiazolinone in sludge anaerobic fermentation for volatile fatty acids generation

In the post-COVID-19 pandemic era, various antimicrobials have emerged and concentrated in waste-activated sludge (WAS), affecting the biological treatment of WAS. However, there is still a knowledge gap in the dynamic response and adaptive mechanism of anaerobic microbiome under exogenous antimicrobial stress. This study found that methylisothiazolinone (MIT, as a typic antimicrobial) caused an interesting lag effect on the volatile fatty acids (VFAs) promotion in the WAS anaerobic fermentation process. MIT was effective to disintegrate the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), and those functional anaerobic microorganisms were easily exposed and negatively impacted by the MIT interference after the loss of protective barriers. Correspondingly, the ecological interactions and microbial metabolic functions related to VFA biosynthesis (e.g., pyruvate metabolism) were downregulated at the initial stage. The syntrophic consortia gradually adapted to the interference and attenuated the MIT stress by activating chemotaxis and resistance genes (e.g., excreting, binding, and inactivating). Due to the increased bioavailable substrates in the fermentation systems, the dominant microorganisms (i.e., Clostridium and Caloramator) with both VFAs production and MIT-tolerance functions have been domesticated. Moreover, MIT disrupted the syntrophic interaction between acetogens and methanogens and totally suppressed methanogens' metabolic activities. The VFA production derived from WAS anaerobic fermentation was therefore enhanced due to the interference of antimicrobial MIT stress. This work deciphered dynamic changes and adaptive evolution of anaerobic syntrophic consortia in response to antimicrobial stress and provided guidance on the evaluation and control of the ecological risks of exogenous pollutants in WAS treatment.

Cascading Integration of Electrofermentation and Photosynthesis—Low‐Carbon Biorefinery in Closed Loop Approach

AbstractSingle‐chambered electrofermentation (EF) bioreactors are operated using spent wash to evaluate the effect of applied voltage (EF/AV; −0.6 V) against closed‐circuit (EF/CC; 100 Ω) and control (EF/C; no voltage/resistance) operations using deoiled microalgae biomass‐derived biochar electrodes (anode) on increasing acidogenesis rate/efficiency. Higher total volatile fatty acids (VFA) production (mg L−1) is observed in EF/AV (2866), depicting 31% and 57% increments than EF/CC (1984) and EF/C (1224), respectively. The VFA profiles (C2–C4) in EF/AV are higher with acetic/butyric/propionic acids (1922/704/240 mg L−1) and biogas co‐generation [H2 (22%) and CH4 (3%)] than EF/CC and EF/C. The applied voltage (EF/AV) helps in electron flux regulation for increasing substrates conversion and VFA generation. Residual VFA‐rich effluents from EF process is utilized as substrate to mixotrophic microalgae cultivation (nutrient‐ and stress‐phase) that resulted in biomass production with simultaneous wastewater treatment. EF/AV depicts higher biomass growth (0.72 g L−1; 4th day) and substrate removal (63%) than other operations. Integrations of electrofermentation with photosynthetic processes operated with the residual resources in effluents towards product valorization and wastewater polishing, accounts for low‐carbon economy.

Generation of High Concentration Free Volatile Fatty Acids from Continuous Anaerobic Digestion of Chicken Manure by Suppressing the Decomposition of Nitrogenous Components.

Free volatile fatty acids (free VFA) play a crucial role in the inactivation of pathogens during the anaerobic digestion of animal manure. However, the decomposition of nitrogenous components can release alkaline ammonium-N, which might increase the pH and reduce the concentration of free VFA. In this study, continuous anaerobic digestion of high-solid chicken manure was conducted for 150days. The results indicated the process stabilized at a pH of approximately 6.0, with total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) of around 7.0g/L. The resulting concentration of free VFA was only about 3.1g/L, which might not sufficiently effective for pathogen inactivation. On the 70th day, hydrogen chloride was added into the reactor to adjust the pH to 5.5. This led to a further decrease in pH to 4.3 and TAN to 2.3g/L. As a result, the concentration of free VFA significantly increased, reaching up to 12.6g/L. These findings support the potential for generating high levels of free VFA even for nitrogen-rich manure by implementing an appropriate process regulation.

Distinct effects of chemical- and bio- flocculants on the sludge acidogenic fermentation for volatile fatty acids production by affecting the acidogenic steps, microbial community structure and metabolic functions

Flocculants play crucial roles in sludge treatment, while the specific impact of chemical and bio-flocculants on sludge anaerobic fermentation was unknown. This study unveiled the contrasting effects of chitosan (CTS) and poly‑aluminum chloride (PAC) on volatile fatty acids (VFAs) generation during sludge fermentation. CTS supplementation resulted in 17.2 % increase in VFAs production, while PAC exposure led to 7.6 % reduction compared to the control. Further investigation revealed that CTS facilitated sludge solubilization and hydrolysis, thus providing sufficient organic substrates for VFAs generation. Additionally, environmental-friendly CTS exposure positively influenced the abundance and activity of functional anaerobes, as well as the expression of genes associated with VFAs biosynthesis. In contrast, PAC exposure resulted in the formation of larger sludge flocs, which hindered WAS solubilization and hydrolysis. Meanwhile, its potential microbial toxicity also impeded the microbial metabolic activity (i.e., genetic expressions), resulting in unsatisfactory VFAs production.

Surfactant and antibiotic co-occurrence reshaped the acidogenic process for volatile fatty acids production during sludge anaerobic fermentation

The overuse of surfactants and antibiotics has led to their high concentration in waste activated sludge (WAS), and these exogenous pollutants have been shown to pose various influences on the subsequent anaerobic treatment process. Previous works have primarily concerned the impacts of individual pollutants on WAS anaerobic fermentation process. This work revealed the synergetic effects of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) and sulfadiazine (SDZ) co-occurrence in WAS on the biosynthesis of volatile fatty acids (VFAs). The addition of SDBS in the SDZ reactor significantly increased VFAs generation, and this increase was correlated with the concentration of SDZ. The VFAs production exhibited a 200.0–211.9 % and 5.9–20.4 % increase in comparison with the sole SDZ and SDBS reactor, respectively. The SDBS and SDZ co-occurrence facilitated the solubilization, hydrolysis, and acidification stages of WAS fermentation synchronously. SDBS was effectively to disintegrate the cemented structure of extracellular polymeric substances and meanwhile improve the SDZ solubilization, which increase the SDZ bioavailability as well as biotoxicity to the anaerobic species. Herein, the anaerobic consortia structure was evidently reshaped, and the keystone microbes Acetoanaerobium and Fususibacter, as well-tolerated hydrolytic-acidogenic bacteria, were greatly enriched. Furthermore, the functional microbial metabolic traits responsible for the substrate extracellular hydrolysis (e.g., glsA and MAN2C1), intracellular metabolism (e.g., ALDO and asdA), and fatty acid generation (e.g., aarC) were all upregulated in the SDBS/SDZ co-occurrence reactor.

Performance and mechanisms of urea exposure for enhancement of biotransformation of sewage sludge into volatile fatty acids

Herein, a cost-effective method for improving the anaerobic fermentation performance of sewage sludge (SS) is proposed. The highest volatile fatty acids (VFAs) reached up to 5550 mg COD/L with the supplementation of 0.2 g urea/g total suspended solids (TSS). Intensive exploration showed that SS decomposition was profoundly triggered by urea and the free ammonia generated due to the hydrolysis of urea, providing adequately bioaccessible substrates for acidogenic reactions and thus contributing to VFAs formation. Microbial composition analysis indicated that functional bacteria (i.e., Tissierella and Clostridium) associated with VFAs generation were enriched. Moreover, the metabolic activities of functional flora (i.e., membrane transport and fatty acid synthesis) were up-regulated due to the stimulation of urea. In general, the increase in bioavailable organic matter and functional microbes, and thus the increased microbial metabolic activities, improved the efficient production of VFAs. This study could provide a cost-effective approach for resource recovery from SS.

Metagenomics insights into the effect of co-landfill of incineration fly ash and refuse for bacterial community succession and metabolism pathway of VFAs production

With the development of incineration technologies, incineration has become the most common treatment method of municipal solid waste in China. However, stabilized fly ash may enter landfills during the transition from landfill to incineration, which caused uncertain impact on landfill waste stabilization. Two simulated co-landfill columns were constructed based on different co-landfill methods (layer co-landfill and mixed co-landfill) to investigate the effect of stabilized fly ash co-landfilled municipal solid waste for bacterial community succession and change in metabolic pathways during hydrolysis-acidogenesis stage. The mixed co-landfill method resulted in higher degree of organic matter degradation, and the concentrations of volatile fatty acids (VFA) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) in leachate were higher. The dominant phyla were Firmicutes in the layered co-landfill column and Bacteroidetes in mixed co-landfill column. The dominant genera for the total bacterial composition and VFA production were different, Pseudomonas and Propionibacterium, Proteiniphilum and unclassified Bacteroides were the dominant genera responsible for VFA generation in the layered and mixed co-landfill columns. The genes for butyrate production were enriched in the layered co-landfill column, whereas those related to acetate production were enriched in mixed co-landfill column. However, the layered co-landfill inhibited the microbial metabolic activity at the end of the co-landfill process.

Co-production of lactate and volatile fatty acids through repeated-batch fermentation of fruit and vegetable waste: Effect of cycle time and replacement ratio

In this study, repeated-batch fermentation was used to convert fruit and vegetable waste to lactate and volatile fatty acids (VFAs), which are essential carbon sources for medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) production. The effect of cycle time and replacement ratio on acidification in long-term fermentation was investigated. The results showed that they had a significant impact on product yield, productivity, and type of products. Considering the yield, productivity, and lactate/VFAs ratio, a replacement ratio of 30% and a cycle time of 2 d may be more suitable for further production of MCFAs. Its productivity and lactate/VFAs ratio were 4.07 ± 0.24 g/(L·d) and 5 ± 0.6, respectively. The lactic acid bacteria, such as Enterococcus (63%) and Lactobacillus (33%), stabilized in the reactor, resulting in the generation of both lactate and VFAs by heterolactic fermentation. The present study demonstrated a new strategy with the potential to recover high-value products from organic waste streams.

Effect of pH on sodium citrate pretreatment to promote volatile fatty acids production during anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge

The efficiency of sodium citrate (SC) pretreatment in enhancing volatile fatty acids (VFAs) generation from waste activated sludge (WAS) has been demonstrated, yet the yield remains limited. Therefore, this study investigated the influence of pH regulation on the efficiency of SC pretreatment by combining different initial acid-base conditions with SC. The results indicated that the acidic environment coupled with SC led to a tighter extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) structure and hindered the organic matter solubilization or VFAs production. Conversely, the alkaline environment combined with SC demonstrated a positive synergistic effect on sludge hydrolysis and VFAs production, with the synergy becoming more pronounced as alkalinity increases. When the initial pH was 11, the sludge disintegration degree (DDSCOD) and DNA solubilization were 1.67 and 3.76 times higher than those of SC alone, respectively. Moreover, the maximum VFAs production of 759.75 mg COD/g VSS (volatile suspended solids) was achieved at day 4 of fermentation. Microbial analysis showed that acidic conditions combined with SC favored hydrogen-producing bacteria (Clostridium_sensu_stricto) enrichment, while alkaline conditions combined with SC promoted the substantial enrichment of hydrolytic acid-producing bacteria with higher tolerance and adaptability (Macellibacteroides, Proteiniclasticum, and Acetoanaerobium). This may be the fundamental reason for the improvement of VFAs production.

Thermophilic Dark Fermentation for Simultaneous Mixed Volatile Fatty Acids and Biohydrogen Production from Food Waste

Food waste is categorized as organic solid waste, which has a negative impact on environmental sustainability. Food waste was simultaneously used for the feasible generation of mixed volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and bio-hydrogen by deploying dark fermentation. Original anaerobic digested sludge was prepared via the shock technique with 50 g/L glucose under thermophilic temperature (55 °C). The pretreated inoculum was found capable of converting 10 g VS/L food waste to hydrogen with a rather high yield of 135.2 ± 7 mL H2/VSadded. The effect of various concentrations of food waste, including 10.2, 16.3, 20.3, and 26.4 g VS/L, on mixed VFAs production was subsequently carried out in batch dark fermentation. The highest butyric acid concentration (5.26 ± 0.22 g/L) in soluble metabolites was obtained from batch dark fermentation with 26.4 g VS/L of food waste. The dominant Clostridium thermobutyricum, Clostridium sporogenes, and Octadecobacter sp. found in the batch of dark fermentation of food waste could confirm the effectiveness of the load shock pretreatment method for inoculum preparation. The continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) inoculated with mixed cultures, also prepared via the load shock pretreatment method and without the addition of external nutrients, was operated by feeding 26.4 g VS/L food waste at the kinetically designed HRT for 4 days, corresponding to an organic loading rate (OLR) of 7.6 g VS/L·d. Under steady state conditions, promising butyric acid (5.65 ± 0.51 g/L)-rich mixed VFAs were achieved along with the hydrogen yield of 104.9 ± 11.0 mL-H2/g VSadded, which is similar to the upper side of the previously reported yields (8.8 ± 0.6–103.6 ± 0.6 mL-H2/g VS).

Emerging Strategies for Enhancing Propionate Conversion in Anaerobic Digestion: A Review.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a triple-benefit biotechnology for organic waste treatment, renewable production, and carbon emission reduction. In the process of anaerobic digestion, pH, temperature, organic load, ammonia nitrogen, VFAs, and other factors affect fermentation efficiency and stability. The balance between the generation and consumption of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) in the anaerobic digestion process is the key to stable AD operation. However, the accumulation of VFAs frequently occurs, especially propionate, because its oxidation has the highest Gibbs free energy when compared to other VFAs. In order to solve this problem, some strategies, including buffering addition, suspension of feeding, decreased organic loading rate, and so on, have been proposed. Emerging methods, such as bioaugmentation, supplementary trace elements, the addition of electronic receptors, conductive materials, and the degasification of dissolved hydrogen, have been recently researched, presenting promising results. But the efficacy of these methods still requires further studies and tests regarding full-scale application. The main objective of this paper is to provide a comprehensive review of the mechanisms of propionate generation, the metabolic pathways and the influencing factors during the AD process, and the recent literature regarding the experimental research related to the efficacy of various strategies for enhancing propionate biodegradation. In addition, the issues that must be addressed in the future and the focus of future research are identified, and the potential directions for future development are predicted.

Production of biolipids from volatile fatty acids of sewage sludge by Yarrowia lipolytica

Sewage sludge (SS) can be used as a fantastic source of organic compounds instead of being considered as a waste. Thus, these compounds could be converted into microbial lipids (ML) by oleaginous microorganisms, these biolipids being used as raw material for the sustainable production of biodiesel. Nevertheless, the organic compounds are trapped in the complex structures of the sludge flocs. Therefore, in this study an integrated process of sludge management was developed to produce ML as a valuable alternative to oils from agricultural sources. In this sense, wet oxidation (WO) was used as a pre-treatment process of SS in order to maximise the generation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) mainly acetic and propionic acids. Thus, the liquid fraction was employed as a substrate to produce biolipids by Yarrowia lipolytica, without adding any kind of (micro)nutrients. The optimum conditions for the VFA generation were found to be 205 °C and 120 min, obtaining a concentration of acetic and propionic acids of 4323 ± 112 mg/L and 565 ± 25 mg/L, respectively. Besides, during the WO, ammonium nitrogen was also released, which is a vital nutrient in the metabolism of the oleaginous yeast for cell proliferation. Regarding the fermentation with Y. lipolytica, the best pH value was established at 6.5. Under these conditions, 95% of acetic acid and 100% of propionic acid were metabolised by the yeast. This implied that approximately 30% of the organic carbon present in the oxidised SS was transformed into biolipids in 48 h of cultivation. High lipid content and lipid yield coefficient (YL/S) were achieved using VFAs derived from SS, the values being 35 ± 1% and 0.23 ± 0.02 g/g, respectively. The lipid profile mainly contained monounsaturated fatty acids, such as oleic acid (46.4 ± 0.4%), making it an interesting raw material for biodiesel production. Therefore, the proposed strategy can be a promising approach to produce clean biofuels from SS.

Optimization and modelling of volatile fatty acid generation in a leachate bed reactor for utilization in microbial fuel cells

AbstractVolatile fatty acid (VFA)‐rich leachate generated from acidogenesis of kitchen waste in a leach bed reactor (LBR) was utilized in an earthen microbial fuel cell (EMFC) to generate electricity. Effects of organic loading rate (OLR, 5–10 g VS/L·day) and pH (5–7) on LBR enumerated optimized parameters of OLR (10 g VS/L·day) and pH (5.74) to obtain total VFA (TVFA) of 7.7 ± 0.3 g/L in the leachate, with maximum contribution from acetic acid. Leachate obtained from the LBR was fed to the EMFC with varying OLR (2–7 kg COD/m3·day). The highest power density of 0.76 W/m3 (at OLR 7 kg COD/m3·day) was obtained with higher VFA content in the leachate. A neural network based on the Levenberg–Marquard function effectively predicted chemical oxygen demand and TVFA removal. This study establishes LBR as a techno‐economic method to obtain useful substrate for EMFC. Furthermore, the response modelling of EMFC demonstrates the potential of utilizing machine learning in biological treatment.

Kinetic Study of Anaerobic Digestion of Compost Leachate from Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste

The anaerobic digestion (AD) of compost leachate has been scarcely investigated and, to the best of our knowledge, no previous work has analyzed the kinetics of the process in completely stirred tank reactors (CSTR). To overcome this lack of knowledge, the present work aimed to deepen the study of the AD of compost leachate in CSTR and to identify the kinetics that can represent the process evolution under different operating conditions. In this regard, an experimental investigation was carried out on a laboratory anaerobic pilot plant that worked in semi-continuous mode under mesophilic conditions. After the start-up phase, the digester was fed with organic loading rates (OLR) between 4 and 30 gCOD/Ld. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal ranged between 80 and 85% for OLR values up to 20 gCOD/Ld and, then, it was observed as 54% at 30 gCOD/Ld. The deterioration of process performance was caused by an excessive generation of volatile fatty acids leading to a decrease of methane production yield from 0.32–0.36 LCH4/gCODremoved at 20 gCOD/Ld, to 0.23–0.26 LCH4/gCODremoved at 30 gCOD/Ld. Using kinetic analysis, the Monod model was shown to be quite accurate in modelling the trends of COD degradation rates for OLR values up to 20 gCOD/Ld. On the other hand, a better fit was achieved with the Haldane model at 30 gCOD/Ld. The conducted modelling allowed to identify the kinetic parameters for each model. The detected results could help in the management and design of the digesters for the treatment of compost leachate.
