Generation of amplitude-squeezed light from 1550 nm distributed feedback semiconductor laser under wavelength selective optical feedback conditions

Excess noise that degrades the squeezing of a 1550 nm distributed feedback semiconductor laser is identified using a Mach Zehnder interferometer. This excess noise is reduced using wavelength selective optical feedback. Amplitude-squeezed states then are generated at room temperature.

Photon-number squeezing in the normal-dispersion regime

We experimentally demonstrate the generation of amplitude-squeezed light in the normal-dispersion regime and measure by direct detection 1.7+/-0.1 dB (33%) and, with correction for linear losses, 2.5+/-0.2 dB (47%) of noise reduction below the shot-noise level. The dependence of the noise behavior on dispersion is investigated both experimentally and theoretically.

Noise and amplitude-squeezing performance of two-polarization-mode semiconductor lasers

Using a theoretical semiclassical approach, we study in detail the amplitude fluctuations and correlations of a two-orthogonal polarization-mode semiconductor laser as obtained from a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL). We demonstrate that there exists the possibility of squeezing in the two-mode regime besides sub-shot-noise emission in the well-known ideal single-mode operation regime. These theoretical results confirm a recent experimental demonstration of the generation of amplitude-squeezed light with VCSEL's.

Generation of amplitude-squeezed light from a room-temperature Fabry–Perot semiconductor laser

Amplitude-squeezed light with intensity fluctuations 29% below the standard quantum limit (SQL) is produced from a pump-suppressed room-temperature semiconductor laser, corresponding to 41% below the SQL after correction for detection efficiency. Excess noise, which degrades the observed squeezing, appears to be associated with the presence of weak longitudinal side modes.

Generation of amplitude-squeezed light at 431 nm from a singly resonant frequency doubler

Amplitude-squeezed light at 431 nm has been generated from a singly resonant frequency doubler with a KNbO3 crystal. The frequency doubler is designed to resonate only the fundamental mode and is pumped by a frequency-stabilized Ti:sapphire laser. Noise reduction of 2.4 dB at 7.5 MHz is observed in the second-harmonic mode with a coherent excitation of 65 mW. With the detection efficiency taken into account, the actual noise reduction is estimated to be 5.2 dB.

Room Temperature Generation of Amplitude Squeezed Light from a Semiconductor Laser with Weak Optical Feedback.

Amplitude-squeezed states are produced from a room-temperature Fabry-P\'erot quantum-well semiconductor laser using a combination of pump suppression and weak, dispersive optical feedback. Up to 0.9 dB of squeezing is measured using a balanced homodyne detector corresponding to 1.5 dB of squeezing at the output facet of the laser. A comparison of the data to theoretical predictions suggests that the excess noise measured under free-running conditions could be a result of incomplete side-mode suppression in combination with asymmetrical cross-mode nonlinear gain saturation.

Proposal for generation of amplitude-squeezed light (ASL) from laser diodes with electronic feedback

It is generally believed that the amplitude fluctuations of a light beam initially in the coherent state cannot be squeezed below those of shot noise by the simple arrangement of a beamsplitter and a detector, the current from the detector being fed back to the light source or to a modulator. A simple semiclassical theory shows that arbitrary amounts of squeezing can in fact be obtained if a negative opticalconductance device such as a constant-voltage-driven (nonself-oscillating) laser diode is used in place of a conventional detector.
