Hyper-concentration and low-sediment-concentration rivers: Ecosystem stability and driving forces

The stability of the river ecosystem can determine the health status of the river. And evolutionary driving forces of river ecosystem can reflect the useful information that the river basin disturbance response to the river, which can provide a theoretical basis for the protection and management of the river. The main goal of this study is to establish a river ecosystem stability evaluation model based on biological and non-biological parameters, and to quantify the effects of driving force, such as: human activities, hydrological situation, climatic factors and land utilization on river ecosystem evolution. In the southeastern part of China's Loess Plateau, we selected the mainstream of the Weihe River (hyper-concentration) and the tributaries (low-sediment-concentration) of the Weihe River at the northern foot of the Qinling Mountains. Results show that the evaluation model based on maximum generalized entropy principle (MGEP) is suitable for stability evaluation of different river ecosystems. The stability of hyper-concentration river ecosystem (3.371) is lower than that of low-sediment-concentration ecosystem (5.343). There are 5 key parameters affecting the ecosystem stability of hyper-concentration river while 8 of low-sediment-concentration river. Among the key parameters, turbidity has the greatest impact on the ecosystem stability of both types of rivers. Interestingly, the turbidity of hyper-concentration river is mainly affected by sediment content, while the turbidity of low-sediment-concentration river has a positive correlation with chlorophyll concentration. It’s principally because the two river ecosystems are affected by different external driving forces. Hyper-concentration river ecosystem is mainly driven by land utilization, while low-sediment-concentration is primarily influenced by hydrological situation and climate factors.

Evaluation of the biomass gasification-based combined cooling, heating and power system using the maximum generalized entropy principle

In order to promote the environmental conservation and energy efficiency, sufficient attention has been paid to biomass gasification-based combined cooling, heating and power (BGBCCHP) systems. Accurate evaluation of BGBCCHP systems is helpful to improving its performance. The maximum generalized entropy principle was introduced to reveal the essential characteristics of BGBCCHP systems. The BGBCCHP system was regarded as an open and evolutionary information network. Annual total cost, annual primary energy consumption, annual carbon dioxide emissions and exergy efficiency were used as evaluation criteria. Reasonable weights were conferred to the criteria so as to make the system stable. Moreover, an evaluation model based on the maximum generalized entropy principle was established to determine the eigenvalues of the BGBCCHP system. Self-organizing feature map network was used to simulate the evaluation model of the BGBCCHP system. A case study based on an office building in Beijing, China, was carried out. Three operating strategies (following the thermal load, following the electric load and following the hybrid electric-thermal load) were considered in the evaluation of the BGBCCHP system. Sensitivity analysis was carried out to investigate the impact of economic and technical parameters on the evaluation results. Results indicated that the evaluation model based on the maximum generalized entropy principle could be used to evaluate the BGBCCHP system operated under different operating strategies. The BGBCCHP system operated following the electric load achieved the maximum eigenvalue, which showed that its best integrated performance. On the contrary, the BGBCCHP system operated following the thermal load achieved the minimum eigenvalue, which showed that its worst integrated performance. The impact of sensitivity factors on the eigenvalues of the BGBCCHP system was different, which showed that the integrated performance of the BGBCCHP system was closely related to such factors.

Fractal Mechanism Analysis and Simulation of Information System

To find the best design and development model for the information system, this paper discusses the structural formation of the information system and the kinetics of the evolution of information system from the perspective of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics and generalized entropy in the system. Based on this view, physical laws for the evolution dynamics of information system are expressed as the maximum generalized entropy principle (MGEP). Combining with self-organizing feature map algorithm, we have analyzed the effect on the system structure from the exchange between information flows. That is to say, an information system has fractal characteristics. Except for these theories, we have done some numerous simulation on information systems of 10 major cities in China's to verify the fractal characteristics, which has great significant to the guidance of achieving full use of resources, accelerating the process of information society and constructing information systems.

STRUCTURAL EVOLUTIONS OF STOCK MARKETS CONTROLLED BY GENERALIZED ENTROPY PRINCIPLES OF COMPLEX SYSTEMS

As one of the most important financial markets and one of the main parts of economic system, the stock market has become the research focus in economics. The stock market is a typical complex open system far from equilibrium. Many available models that make huge contribution to researches on market are strong in describing the market however, ignoring strong nonlinear interactions among active agents and weak in reveal underlying dynamic mechanisms of structural evolutions of market. From econophysical perspectives, this paper analyzes the complex interactions among agents and defines the generalized entropy in stock markets. Nonlinear evolutionary dynamic equation for the stock markets is then derived from Maximum Generalized Entropy Principle. Simulations are accordingly conducted for a typical case with the given data, by which the structural evolution of the stock market system is demonstrated. Some discussions and implications are finally provided.

Entropy law in aquatic communities and the general entropy principle for the development of living systems

The study of entropy production is significant for understanding nature of complex and functional systems from non-reductionistic viewpoints. The present paper provides a property of entropy production for aquatic communities (lakes and estuaries) using data of biomass and respiration in trophic compartments in 18 aquatic food webs in Africa, Israel, Japan and America. It is shown that entropy production in aquatic communities has a characteristic property: early increase and later decrease with time. This property is supported by various other living systems: human body, swine and lake-ecosystems. It may be generalized to be universal for overall time course of biotic systems from organisms to ecosystems, and named as “early increasing-later decreasing entropy production principle” or “Min–Max principle of entropy production (MMEP)”. Also, some small-scale behaviors of entropy production during short period of time are presented.

A New Approach to Thermodynamics of Simple Mixtures

A general entropy principle is utilized to derive restrictions on the constitutive relations for simple mixtures. The absolute temperature and chemical potentials are introduced in a novel manner and the equality of the coefficients of thermal diffusion and of the diffusion-thermo coefficients is proved for a subclass of simple mixtures by use of macroscopic arguments.

Method of Lagrange multipliers for exploitation of the entropy principle

In thermodynamics, whenever a material is subject to investigation of its properties, the entropy principle is used to impose restrictions on the constitutive relations for the material. There is not, so far, any simple method by which restrictions from the entropy principle can be derived for all kinds of different materials. Indeed, until very recently there was not even an entropy principle appropriate to all bodies. MULLER [1] [2] [3] has proposed such a general entropy principle, and here I suggest a simple method for its exploitation: the method of Lagrange multipliers. The entropy principle requires the constitutive relations to be such that every solution of the thermodynamic field equations satisfy the entropy inequality. To satisfy this requirement is not easy, since usually complicated calculations ensue. The method proposed here is intended to facilitate the solution of this problem.
