Dynamics and emission properties of flux ropes from two-temperature GRMHD simulations with multiple magnetic loops

Flux ropes erupting in the vicinity of a black hole are thought to be a potential model for the flares observed in Sagittarius\,A$^*$. In this study, we examine the radiative properties of flux ropes that emerged in the vicinity of a black hole. We performed three-dimensional two-temperature general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations of magnetized accretion flows with alternating multiple magnetic loops and general relativistic radiation transfer (GRRT) calculations. In the GRMHD simulations, we implemented two different sizes of initial magnetic loops. In the small loop case, magnetic dissipation leads to a weaker excitement of magneto-rotational instability inside the torus, which generates a lower accretion rate compared to the large loop case. However, the small loop case generates more flux ropes due to frequent reconnection by magnetic loops with different polarities. By calculating the thermal synchrotron emission, we found that the variability of light curves and the emitting region are tightly related. At $230\ GHz$ and higher, the emission from the flux ropes is relatively stronger compared to the background, which is responsible for the filamentary structure in the images. At lower frequencies (e.g. $43\ GHz$), emission comes from more extended regions, which have a less filamentary structure in the image. Our study shows that self-consistent electron temperature models are essential for the calculation of thermal synchrotron radiation and the morphology of the GRRT images. Flux ropes contribute considerable emission at frequencies $ GHz$.

Enhanced Blandford Znajek jet in loop quantum black hole

The Blandford-Znajek (BZ) process powers energetic jets by extracting the rotating energy of a Kerr black hole. It is important to understand this process in non-Kerr black hole spacetimes. In this study, we conduct two-dimensional and three-dimensional two-temperature General Relativistic Magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations of magnetized accretion flows onto a rotating Loop-Quantum black hole (LQBH). Our investigation focuses on the accretion flow structure and jet launching dynamics from our simulations.We observe that the loop quantum effects increase the black hole angular frequency for spinning black holes.This phenomenon intensifies the frame-dragging effect, leading to an amplification of the toroidal magnetic field within the funnel region and enhancement of the launching jet power.It is possible to fit the jet power following a similar fitting formula of the black hole angular frequency as seen in the Kerr black hole.Based on the General Relativistic Radiation Transfer (GRRT) calculation, we find that the jet image from LQBH has a wider opening angle and an extended structure than the Kerr BH.

The Dependence of Gamma-Ray Burst Jet Collimation on Black Hole Spin

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most luminous events in the Universe and are excellent laboratories to study extreme physical phenomena in the cosmos. Despite a long trajectory of progress in understanding these highly energetic events, there are still many observed features that are yet to be fully explained. Observations of the jet opening angle of long gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) suggest that LGRB jets are narrower for those GRBs at higher redshift. This phenomenon has been explained in the context of collimation by the stellar envelope, with denser (lower metallicity) stars at higher redshifts able to collimate the jet more effectively. However, until now, the dependence of the jet opening angle on the properties of the central engine has not been explored. We investigate the effect of black hole spin on the jet collimation angle for a magnetically launched jet, using the general relativistic radiation magnetohydrodynamical code ν bhlight. We present 3D results for a range of spin values. The simulations show that higher-spinning black holes tend to create narrower jets. If indeed LGRB progenitors in the early Universe are able to produce black hole central engines with higher spin, this could account for at least some of the observed jet opening angle-redshift correlation.

General-relativistic Radiation Transport Scheme in Gmunu. II. Implementation of Novel Microphysical Library for Neutrino Radiation—Weakhub

We introduce Weakhub, a novel neutrino microphysics library that provides opacities and kernels beyond conventional interactions used in the literature. This library includes neutrino–matter, neutrino–neutrino interactions and plasma process, along with corresponding weak and strong corrections. A full kinematics approach is adopted for the calculations of β-processes, incorporating various weak corrections and medium modifications due to the nuclear equation of state. Calculations of plasma processes, electron neutrino–antineutrino annihilation, and nuclear de-excitation are also included. We also present the detailed derivations of weak interactions and the coupling to the two-moment based general-relativistic multigroup radiation transport in the general-relativistic multigrid numerical (Gmunu) code. We compare the neutrino opacity spectra for all interactions and estimate their contributions at hydrodynamical points in core-collapse supernovae and binary neutron star (BNS) postmerger remnants, and predict the effects of improved opacities in comparison to conventional ones for a BNS postmerger at a specific hydrodynamical point. We test the implementation of the conventional set of interactions by comparing it to an open-source neutrino library NuLib in a core-collapse supernova simulation. We demonstrate good agreement with discrepancies of less than ∼10% in luminosity for all neutrino species, while also highlighting the reasons contributing to the differences. To compare the advanced interactions to the conventional set in core-collapse supernova modeling, we perform simulations to analyze their impacts on neutrino signatures, hydrodynamical behaviors, and shock dynamics, showing significant deviations.

Emergent Nucleosynthesis from a 1.2 s Long Simulation of a Black Hole Accretion Disk

We simulate a black hole accretion disk system with full-transport general relativistic neutrino radiation magnetohydrodynamics for 1.2 s. This system is likely to form after the merger of two compact objects and is thought to be a robust site of r-process nucleosynthesis. We consider the case of a black hole accretion disk arising from the merger of two neutron stars. Our simulation time coincides with the nucleosynthesis timescale of the r-process (∼1 s). Because these simulations are time-consuming, it is common practice to run for a “short” duration of approximately 0.1–0.3 s. We analyze the nucleosynthetic outflow from this system and compare the results of stopping at 0.12 and 1.2 s. We find that the addition of mass ejected in the longer simulation as well as more favorable thermodynamic conditions from emergent viscous ejecta greatly impacts the nucleosynthetic outcome. We quantify the error in nucleosynthetic outcomes between short and long cuts.

Shadows of loop quantum black holes: semi-analytical simulations of loop quantum gravity effects on Sagittarius A* and M87*

In this study, we delve into the observational implications of rotating Loop Quantum Black Holes (LQBHs) within an astrophysical framework. We employ semi-analytical General Relativistic Radiative Transfer (GRRT) computations to study the emission from the accretion flow around LQBHs. Our findings indicate that the increase of Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG) effects results in an enlargement of the rings from LQBHs, thereby causing a more circular polarization pattern in the shadow images. We make comparisons with the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations of Sgr A* and M87*, which enable us to determine an upper limit for the polymetric function P in LQG. The upper limit for Sgr A* is 0.2, while for M87* it is 0.07. Both black holes exhibit a preference for a relatively high spin (a ≳ 0.5 for Sgr A* and 0.5 ≲ a ≲ 0.7 for M87*). The constraints for Sgr A* are based on black hole spin and ring diameter, whereas for M87*, the constraints are further tightened by the polarimetric pattern. In essence, our simulations provide observational constraints on the effect of LQG in supermassive black holes (SMBH), providing the most consistent comparison with observation.

Multifrequency General Relativistic Radiation Magnetohydrodynamic Simulations of Thin Disks

We present a set of six general relativistic, multifrequency, radiation magnetohydrodynamic simulations of thin accretion disks with different target mass accretion rates around black holes with spins ranging from nonrotating to rapidly spinning. The simulations use the M 1 closure scheme with 12 independent frequency (or energy) bins ranging logarithmically from 5 × 10−3 keV to 5 × 103 keV. The multifrequency capability allows us to generate crude spectra and energy-dependent light curves directly from the simulations without a need for special postprocessing. While we generally find roughly thermal spectra with peaks around 1–4 keV, our high-spin cases showed harder-than-expected tails for the soft or thermally dominant state. This leads to radiative efficiencies that are up to five times higher than expected for a Novikov–Thorne disk at the same spin. We attribute these high efficiencies to the high-energy, coronal emission. These coronae mostly occupy the effectively optically thin regions near the inner edges of the disks and also cover or sandwich the inner ∼15GM/c 2 of the disks.

General-relativistic Radiation Transport Scheme in Gmunu. I. Implementation of Two-moment-based Multifrequency Radiative Transfer and Code Tests

We present the implementation of a two-moment-based general-relativistic multigroup radiation transport module in the General-relativistic multigrid numerical (Gmunu) code. On top of solving the general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamics and the Einstein equations with conformally flat approximations, the code solves the evolution equations of the zeroth- and first-order moments of the radiations in the Eulerian-frame. An analytic closure relation is used to obtain the higher order moments and close the system. The finite-volume discretization has been adopted for the radiation moments. The advection in spatial space and frequency-space are handled explicitly. In addition, the radiation–matter interaction terms, which are very stiff in the optically thick region, are solved implicitly. The implicit–explicit Runge–Kutta schemes are adopted for time integration. We test the implementation with a number of numerical benchmarks from frequency-integrated to frequency-dependent cases. Furthermore, we also illustrate the astrophysical applications in hot neutron star and core-collapse supernovae modelings, and compare with other neutrino transport codes.

Modeling of Thermal Emission from ULX Pulsar Swift J0243.6+6124 with General Relativistic Radiation MHD Simulations

We perform general relativistic radiation magnetohydrodynamics simulations of super-Eddington accretion flows around a neutron star with a dipole magnetic field for modeling the Galactic ultraluminous X-ray source exhibiting X-ray pulsations, Swift J0243.6+6124. Our simulations show the accretion columns near the magnetic poles, the accretion disk outside the magnetosphere, and the outflows from the disk. It is revealed that the effectively optically thick outflows, consistent with the observed thermal emission at ∼107 K, are generated if the mass accretion rate is much higher than the Eddington rate and the magnetospheric radius is smaller than the spherization radius. In order to explain the blackbody radius (∼100–500 km) without contradicting the reported spin period (9.8 s) and spin-up rate (), a mass accretion rate of is required. Since the thermal emission was detected in two observations with of −2.22 × 10−8 s s−1 and −1.75 × 10−8 s s−1 but not in another with , the surface magnetic field strength of the neutron star in Swift J0243.6+6124 is estimated to be between 3 × 1011 G and 4 × 1012 G. From this restricted range of magnetic field strength, the accretion rate would be when the thermal emission appears and when it is not detected. Our results support the hypothesis that the super-Eddington phase in the 2017–2018 giant outburst of Swift J0243.6+6124 is powered by highly super-Eddington accretion flows onto a magnetized neutron star.

Global high-order numerical schemes for the time evolution of the general relativistic radiation magneto-hydrodynamics equations

Modeling correctly the transport of neutrinos is crucial in some astrophysical scenarios such as core-collapse supernovae and binary neutron star mergers. In this paper, we focus on the truncated-moment formalism, considering only the first two moments (M1 scheme) within the grey approximation, which reduces Boltzmann seven-dimensional equation to a system of equations closely resembling the hydrodynamic ones. Solving the M1 scheme is still mathematically challenging, since it is necessary to model the radiation-matter interaction in regimes where the evolution equations become stiff and behave as an advection-diffusion problem. Here, we present different global, high-order time integration schemes based on Implicit-Explicit Runge-Kutta methods designed to overcome the time-step restriction caused by such behavior while allowing us to use the explicit Runge-Kutta commonly employed for the magneto-hydrodynamics and Einstein equations. Finally, we analyze their performance in several numerical tests.

Protoneutron Star Convection Simulated with a New General Relativistic Boltzmann Neutrino Radiation Hydrodynamics Code

We investigate protoneutron star (PNS) convection using our newly developed general relativistic Boltzmann neutrino radiation hydrodynamics code. This is a pilot study for more comprehensive investigations later. As such, we take a snapshot of a PNS at 2.3 s after bounce from a 1D PNS cooling calculation and run our simulation for ∼160 ms in 2D under axisymmetry. The original PNS cooling calculation neglected convection entirely and the initial conditions were linearly unstable to convection. We find in our 2D simulation that convection is instigated there indeed and expands inward after being full-fledged. The convection then settled to a quasi-steady state after ∼100 ms, being sustained by the negative Y e gradient, which is in turn maintained by neutrino emissions. It enhances the luminosities and mean energies of all species of neutrinos compared to 1D. Taking advantage of the Boltzmann solver, we analyse the possible occurrence of neutrino fast flavor conversion (FFC). We found that FFC is likely to occur in regions where Y e is lower, and that the growth rate can be as high as ∼10−1 cm−1.

Jets from SANE super-Eddington accretion discs: morphology, spectra, and their potential as targets for ngEHT

ABSTRACT We present general relativistic radiation magnetohydrodynamics (GRRMHD) simulations of super-Eddington accretion flows around supermassive black holes (SMBHs), which may apply to tidal disruption events (TDEs). We perform long duration ($t\ge 81,200\, GM/c^3$) simulations that achieve mass accretion rates ≳11 times the Eddington rate and produce thermal synchrotron spectra and images of their jets. Gas flowing beyond the funnel wall expands conically and drives a strong shock at the jet head while variable mass ejection and recollimation, along the jet axis, results in internal shocks and dissipation. Assuming the ion temperature (Ti) and electron temperature (Te) in the plasma are identical, the radio/submillimetre spectra peak at >100 GHz and the luminosity increases with BH spin, exceeding $\sim 10^{41} \, \rm {erg\, s^{-1}}$ in the brightest models. The emission is extremely sensitive to Ti/Te as some models show an order-of-magnitude decrease in the peak frequency and up to four orders-of-magnitude decline in their radio/submillimetre luminosity as Ti/Te approaches 20. Assuming a maximum VLBI baseline distance of 10 Gλ, 230 GHz images of Ti/Te = 1 models shows that the jet head may be bright enough for its motion to be captured with the EHT (ngEHT) at D ≲ 110 (180) Mpc at the 5σ significance level. Resolving emission from internal shocks requires D ≲ 45 Mpc for both the EHT or ngEHT.

Modeling Reconstructed Images of Jets Launched by SANE Super-Eddington Accretion Flows around SMBHs with the ngEHT

Tidal disruption events (TDEs) around supermassive black holes (SMBHs) are a potential laboratory to study super-Eddington accretion disks and sometimes result in powerful jets or outflows which may shine in the radio and sub-millimeter bands. In this work, we modeled the thermal synchrotron emission of jets by general relativistic radiation magneto-hydrodynamics (GRRMHD) simulations of a BH accretion disk/jet system which assumed the TDE resulted in a magnetized accretion disk around a BH accreting at ∼12–25 times the Eddington accretion rate. Through synthetic observations with the Next Generation Event Horizon Telescope (ngEHT) and an image reconstruction analysis, we demonstrate that TDE jets may provide compelling targets within the context of the models explored in this work. In particular, we found that jets launched by a SANE super-Eddington disk around a spin a*=0.9 reach the ngEHT detection threshold at large distances (up to 100 Mpc in this work). A two-temperature plasma in the jet or weaker jets, such as a spin a*=0 model, requires a much closer distance, as we demonstrate detection at 10 Mpc for limiting cases of a*=0,R=1 or a*=0.9,R=20. We also demonstrate that TDE jets may appear as superluminal sources if the BH is rapidly rotating and the jet is viewed nearly face on.

GRRMHD simulations of MAD accretion discs declining from super-Eddington to sub-Eddington accretion rates

ABSTRACT We present two general relativistic radiation magnetohydrodynamics (GRRMHD) simulations of magnetically arrested discs (MADs) around non-spinning (a* = 0) and spinning (a* = 0.9) supermassive black holes (BHs). In each simulation, the mass accretion rate is decreased with time such that we sample Eddington-scaled rates over the range $3 \gtrsim \dot{M}/\dot{M}_{\rm {Edd}}\gtrsim 0.3$. For the non-spinning BH model, the total and radiative efficiencies increase as the accretion rate decreases, varying over the range $\eta _{\rm {tot}}\sim 9\!-\!16{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ and $\eta _{\rm {rad}}\sim 6{-}12{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$, respectively. This model shows very little jet activity. In contrast, the spinning BH model has a strong relativistic jet powered by spin energy extracted from the BH. The jet power declines with accretion rate such that $\eta _{\rm {jet}}\sim 18{-}39{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ while the total and radiative efficiencies are $\eta _{\rm {tot}}\sim 64{-}100{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ and $\eta _{\rm {rad}}\sim 45{-}79{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$, respectively. We confirm that mildly sub-Eddington discs can extract substantial power from a spinning BH, provided they are in the MAD state. The jet profile out to $100\, GM/c^2$ is roughly parabolic with a power-law index of k ≈ 0.43−0.53 during the sub-Eddington evolution. Both models show significant variability in the outgoing radiation which is likely associated with episodes of magnetic flux eruptions. The a* = 0.9 model shows semiregular variations with a period of $\sim 2000\, GM/c^3$ over the final $\sim 10\, 000\, GM/c^3$ of the simulation, which suggests that magnetic flux eruptions may be an important source of quasi-periodic variability. For the simulated accretion rates, the a* = 0 model is spinning up while the a* = 0.9 model is spinning down. Spinup–spindown equilibrium of the BH will likely be achieved at 0.5 < a*, eq < 0.6, assuming continuous accretion in the MAD state.

The Role of Strong Magnetic Fields in Stabilizing Highly Luminous Thin Disks

We present and analyze a set of three-dimensional, global, general relativistic radiation magnetohydrodynamic simulations of thin, radiation-pressure-dominated accretion disks surrounding a nonrotating, stellar-mass black hole. The simulations are initialized using the Shakura–Sunyaev model with a mass accretion rate of (corresponding to L = 0.17L Edd). Our previous work demonstrated that such disks are thermally unstable when accretion is driven by an α-viscosity. In the present work, we test the hypothesis that strong magnetic fields can both drive accretion through magnetorotational instability and restore stability to such disks. We test four initial magnetic field configurations: (1) a zero-net-flux case with a single, radially extended set of magnetic field loops (dipole), (2) a zero-net-flux case with two radially extended sets of magnetic field loops of opposite polarity stacked vertically (quadrupole), (3) a zero-net-flux case with multiple radially concentric rings of alternating polarity (multiloop), and (4) a net-flux, vertical magnetic field configuration (vertical). In all cases, the fields are initially weak, with a gas-to-magnetic pressure ratio ≳100. Based on the results of these simulations, we find that the dipole and multiloop configurations remain thermally unstable like their α-viscosity counterpart, in our case collapsing vertically on the local thermal timescale and never fully recovering. The vertical case, on the other hand, stabilizes and remains so for the duration of our tests (many thermal timescales). The quadrupole case is intermediate, showing signs of both stability and instability. The key stabilizing factor is the ability of specific field configurations to build up and sustain strong, P mag ≳ 0.5P tot, toroidal fields near the midplane of the disk. We discuss the reasons why certain configurations are able to do this effectively and others are not. We then compare our stable simulations to the standard Shakura–Sunyaev disk.

Dynamical Unification of Tidal Disruption Events

The ∼100 tidal disruption events (TDEs) observed so far exhibit a wide range of emission properties both at peak and over their lifetimes. Some TDEs radiate predominantly at X-ray energies, while others radiate chiefly at UV and optical wavelengths. While the peak luminosities across TDEs show distinct properties, the evolutionary behavior can also vary between TDEs with similar peak emission properties. In particular, for optical TDEs, while their UV and optical emissions decline somewhat following the fallback pattern, some events can greatly rebrighten in X-rays at late time. In this Letter, we conduct three-dimensional general relativistic radiation magnetohydrodynamics simulations of TDE accretion disks at varying accretion rates in the regime of super-Eddington accretion. We make use of Monte Carlo radiative transfer simulations to calculate the reprocessed spectra at various inclinations and at different evolutionary stages. We confirm the unified model proposed by Dai et al., which predicts that the observed emission largely depends on the viewing angle of the observer with respect to the disk orientation. Furthermore, we find that disks with higher accretion rates have elevated wind and disk densities, which increases the reprocessing of the high-energy radiation and thus generally augments the optical-to-X-ray flux ratio along a particular viewing angle. This implies that at later times, as the accretion level declines, we expect that more X-rays will leak out along intermediate viewing angles. Such dynamical model for TDEs can provide a natural explanation for the diversity in the emission properties observed in TDEs at peak and along their temporal evolution.

Component of Energy Flow from Supercritical Accretion Disks Around Rotating Stellar Mass Black Holes

By performing two-dimensional axisymmetric general relativistic radiation magnetohydrodynamics simulations with spin parameter a* varying from −0.9 to 0.9, we investigate the dependence on the black hole spin of the energy flow from a supercritical accretion disk around a stellar mass black hole. It is found that optically and geometrically thick disks form near the equatorial plane, and a part of the disk matter is launched from the disk surface in all models. The gas ejection is mainly driven by the radiative force, but magnetic force cannot be neglected when ∣a*∣ is large. The energy outflow efficiency (total luminosity normalized by and c are the mass-accretion rate at the event horizon and the light speed) is higher for rotating black holes than for nonrotating black holes. This is 0.7% for a* = −0.7, 0.3% for a* = 0, and 5% for a* = 0.7 for (L Edd is the Eddington luminosity). Furthermore, although the energy is mainly released by radiation when a* ∼ 0, the Poynting power increases with ∣a*∣ and exceeds the radiative luminosity for models with a* ≥ 0.5 and a* ≤ −0.7. The faster the black hole rotates, the higher the power ratio of the kinetic luminosity to the isotropic luminosity tends to be. This implies that objects with a high (low) power ratio may have rapidly (slowly) rotating black holes. Among ultraluminous X-ray sources, IC342 X-1, is a candidate with a rapidly rotating black hole.

General Relativistic Radiation Magnetohydrodynamics Simulations of Black Hole Accretion Disks: Comparison of Methods Based on Variable Eddington Tensor and Based on M1 Closure

We perform 2.5-dimensional general relativistic radiation magnetohydrodynamics simulations of black hole accretion disks and disk winds in the range of mass accretion rate from 0.1 to 104.5 times the Eddington limit. In this paper, we compare the results of the INAZUMA code, in which the frequency-integrated time-dependent radiation transfer equation is solved in order to evaluate the Eddington tensor, with those of the first momentum (M1) approximation method. In both methods, accretion disks and disk winds appear, and there is no remarkable difference in accretion rate, outflow rate, or luminosity. However, the significant difference in the radiation field appears around the rotation axis. In the M1 method, the radial component of the radiation flux tends to be amplified owing to unphysical radiation collisions. Such an enhancement of the outward radiation flux does not appear in INAZUMA. Also, the problem of radiation not reaching the rotation axis occurs with M1, but not with INAZUMA. Our results indicate that the radiation transfer equation should be solved to obtain the accurate radiation field in the optically thin region around the rotation axis.

Black Hole Physics and Computer Graphics

Black holes are among the most extreme objects known to exist in nature. As such, they are excellent laboratories for testing fundamental theories and studying matter in conditions that cannot be found anywhere else in the Universe. In this article, we highlight the relevance of black holes in modern physical and astronomical research and present one of the possible paths to explain observations and probe physics with the aid of numerical simulations. We briefly review dynamical-spacetime general-relativistic magneto-hydrodynamic (GRMHD) calculations as fundamental tools to study the local properties of black holes and matter around them. Then, we discuss the need for general-relativistic radiation transport to propagate the local information about light obtained with GRMHD simulations to our telescopes. Finally, we present accretion onto binary black holes as a key area of study for testing general relativity and plasma physics. The goal of our article is to introduce the reader to some of the methods in current black hole research and to point out how improvements in hardware and software for computer graphics support advancements in the field.

General relativistic radiation transport: implications for VLBI/EHT observations of AGN discs, winds, and jets

Abstract In 2019, the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration (EHTC) has published the first image of a supermassive black hole (SMBH) obtained via the Very Large Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) technique. In the future, it is expected that additional and more sensitive VLBI observations will be pursued for other nearby active galactic nuclei (AGN), and it is therefore important to understand which possible features can be expected in such images. In this paper, we post-process general relativistic magneto-hydrodynamical (GR-MHD) simulations that include resistivity, thus providing a self-consistent jet formation model, including resistive mass loading of a wind launched from a disc in Keplerian rotation. The ray-tracing is done using the General Relativistic Ray-Tracing code grtrans assuming synchrotron emission. We study the appearance of the black hole environment including the accretion disc, winds and jets under a large range of condition, varying black hole mass, accretion rate, spin, inclination angle, disc parameters, and observed frequency. When we adopt M87-like parameters, we show that we can reproduce a ring-like feature (similar as observed by the EHT) for some of our simulations. The latter suggests that such Keplerian disc models thus could be consistent with the observed results. Depending on their masses, accretion rates, spin, and the sensitivity of the observation, we note that other SMBHs may show additional features like winds and jets in the observations.
