Characteristics of Gaseous Elemental Mercury in a Suburban Area of Shanghai, China.

To clarify gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) in suburban megacities in the Yangtze River Delta region, China, we observed GEM concentrations from December 2019 to November 2020 in Wujing town, a suburban area of Shanghai. The annual mean GEM concentration was 1.44 ± 0.88 ng m-3. Compared with the historical monitoring data of GEM in Shanghai over the past 10 years, the concentration of GEM showed a decreasing trend. The monthly mean concentrations of GEM showed clear seasonal variation, with higher values in the spring and winter. In spring and winter, typical Hg pollution events were observed, which could be mostly associated with increased local anthropogenic activity and temperature inversion. The results of the correlation analysis of the daily mean GEM concentrations with the AQI and backward trajectory calculations indicate that mercury pollution at monitoring sites can be affected by local, regional and interregional influences.

Atmospheric gaseous mercury and associated health risk assessment in the economic capital of India.

Mercury cycling in coastal metropolitan areas on the west coast of India becomes complex due to the combined effects of both intensive domestic anthropogenic emissions and marine air masses. The present study is based on yearlong data of continuous measurements of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) concentration concurrent with meteorological parameters and some air pollutants at a coastal urban site in Mumbai, on the west coast of India, for the first time. The concentration of GEM was found in a range between 2.2 and 12.3ng/m3, with a mean of 3.1 ± 1.1ng/m3, which was significantly higher than the continental background values in the Northern Hemisphere (~ 1.5ng/m3). Unlike particulates, GEM starts increasing post-winter to peak during the monsoon and decrease towards winter. July had the highest concentration of GEM followed by October, and a minimum in January. GEM exhibited a distinct diurnal cycle, mainly with a broad peak in the early morning, a narrow one by nightfall, and a minimum in the afternoon. The peaks and their timing suggest the origin of urban mobility and the start of local activities. A positive correlation between SO2, PM2.5, temperature, relative humidity, and GEM indicates that emissions from local industrial plants in the Mumbai coastal area. Principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) confirm this fact. Monthly back trajectory analysis showed that air mass flows are predominantly from the Arabian Sea and local human activities. Assessment of human health risks by USEPA model reveals that the hazardous quotient, HQ < 1, implies negligible carcinogenic risk. GEM observations in Mumbai during the study period are below the World Health Organization's (WHO) safe limit (200ng/m3) for long-term inhalation.

Spatial and seasonal dynamics of gaseous elemental mercury concentrations over Switzerland observed by a passive air sampler network

Monitoring of gaseous elemental mercury (Hg0) using passive air samplers at 22 sites across Switzerland informs about actual mean national Hg0 concentrations, differences in Hg0 among rural and urban sites and its seasonal dynamics.

Pollution status and source resolution of atmospheric mercury in the intersectional region of Northern Philippines, southern Taiwan, and northern South China Sea

A four-season sampling of speciated atmospheric mercury (SAM) was employed in East Asia. Three mercury species including gaseous elemental mercury (GEM), gaseous oxidized mercury (GOM), and particulate mercury (PHg) were measured at three background sites. This study explored the temporal variation, spatial distribution, gas-solid partition, transport routes, and source resolution of SAM. The yearly average concentrations of GEM, GOM, and PHg were 2.76 ± 0.36 ng/m3, 23.14 ± 8.67 pg/m3, and 0.23 ± 0.058 ng/m3. The highest GEM and PHg concentrations occurred at Laoag (northern Philippines) in spring, while that of GOM was observed at Laoag but in summer. The lowest GEM and PHg concentrations always occurred at Dongsha Islands (northern South China Sea) in summer, while that of GOM was also observed at Dongsha Islands but in fall. SAM was partition as showed 92.64–96.72% of total gas-phase mercury (TGM) and 3.28–7.36% of solid phase mercury. Eight clustered transport routes were resolved by a HYSPLIT model with polluted air parcels originating from Central/North China. Routes from Indochina Peninsula and South China showed the highest GEM concentration. Moreover, air parcels transported from West Pacific Ocean and South China Sea (SCS) had the lowest concentration of GEM. High concentrations of SAM in the region were mainly attributed to long-range transport (LRT) from Asian continental outflows (ACOs). We further revealed that GEM was positively correlated to SO2, CO, NOx, and PM2.5, but negatively correlated to O3. GOM was positively correlated to SO2, O3, NOx, and PM2.5, but negatively correlated to CO, While, PHg was positively correlated to SO2, CO, O3, NOx, and PM2.5.

Long-Range Atmospheric Mercury Transport from Across East Asia to a Suburban Coastal Area in Southern Vietnam.

Exports of atmospheric mercury (Hg) from continental East Asia, a major Hg emitter in the globe, have been reported by several studies in neighboring countries such as Japan and Korea. Nonetheless, studies concerning this topic in Southeast Asia (SEA) countries are still limited. Accordingly, gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) has been measured from Can Thanh High School (CTHS), a suburban coastal site in southern Vietnam to study its characterization and discover the evidence of Hg trans-boundary transport from regional sources (e.g., East Asia). Data collected in July, August, and October 2022 were used in this study, and the overall GEM concentration was 1.61 ± 0.32 ng m-3. The GEM levels were higher in October than in July and August, potentially due to the discrepancy in air mass transport patterns induced by tropical monsoon and source origins of Hg. MERRA-2, backward trajectories, and CALIPSO images revealed the trans-boundary air pollution from continental East Asia to southern Vietnam, evidenced by significantly elevated (> 30%) atmospheric Hg concentrations as well as other air pollutants when the plume arrived at CTHS. Furthermore, our results also imply that atmospheric Hg exported from East Asia could influence large areas in SEA, suggesting the need for more studies in various SEA countries in the upcoming future. This study illustrated the influence of regional Hg emissions on local atmospheric Hg pollution and provided data to improve knowledge of the Hg biogeochemical cycle in SEA.

Mercury accumulation efficiency of different biomonitors in indoor environments: the case study of the Central Italian Herbarium (Florence, Italy)

Biomonitoring studies are often employed to track airborne pollutants both in outdoor and indoor environments. In this study, the mercury (Hg) sorption by three biomonitors, i.e., Pinus nigra bark, Pseudovernia furfuracea lichen, and Hypnum cupressiforme moss, was investigated in controlled (indoor) conditions. In comparison to outdoor environments, controlled conditions offer the opportunity to investigate more in detail the variables (humidity, temperature, pollutants speciation, etc.) that control Hg uptake. The biomonitors were exposed in two distinct periods of the year for 2 and 12 months respectively, in the halls of the Central Italian Herbarium (Natural History Museum of the University of Florence, Italy), which are polluted by Hg, due to past plant sample treatments. The Hg sorption trend was monitored every 3 weeks by recording: (i) the Hg content in the substrata, (ii) gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) concentrations in the exposition halls, (iii) temperature, (iv) humidity, and (v) particulate matter (PM) concentrations. At the end of the experiment, Hg concentrations in the biomonitors range from 1130 ± 201 to 293 ± 45 μg kg−1 (max–min) in barks, from 3470 ± 571 to 648 ± 40 μg kg−1 in lichens, and from 3052 ± 483 to 750 ± 127 μg kg−1 in mosses. All the biomonitors showed the highest Hg accumulation after the first 3 weeks of exposure. Mercury concentrations increased over time showing a continuous accumulation during the experiments. The biomonitors demonstrated different Hg accumulation trends in response to GEM concentrations and to the different climatic conditions (temperature and humidity) of the Herbarium halls. Barks strictly reflected the gaseous Hg pollution, while lichen and moss accumulation was also influenced by the climatic conditions of the indoor environment. Mercury bound to PM seemed to provide a negligible contribution to the biomonitors final uptake.

Declines of gaseous element mercury concentrations at an urban site in eastern China caused by reductions of anthropogenic emission

Long-term observations (June 2014 to June 2022) of atmospheric mercury (Hg) mass concentrations were conducted at an urban site in Nanjing, eastern China, together with other air pollutants. Throughout the sampling period, gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) exhibited a substantial decline from 5.41 ± 1.49 ng m−3 in 2014 to 2.17 ± 1.26 ng m−3 in 2022. The monthly mean concentrations of GEM displayed a significant downward trend, with a rate of 0.36 ng m−3 yr−1 (−7% yr−1). To identify the potential sources contributing to the observed GEM levels, positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis was employed in conjunction with other relevant pollutants. The results revealed that the natural and anthropogenic emissions played comparable roles in shaping the measured GEM concentrations, with the reduction of coal combustion emissions being the primary driver behind the observed declines at this site. Furthermore, GEOS-Chem simulations suggested a substantial reduction of anthropogenic emissions in eastern China in recent years. This study highlights the decreasing trend of GEM concentrations in eastern China over the past decade, which is attributed to the combined efforts in air pollutant controls, resulting in the synergistic mitigation of Hg from the atmosphere.

The Interrelated Pollution Characteristics of Atmospheric Speciated Mercury and Water-Soluble Inorganic Ions in Ningbo, China

Atmospheric mercury and water-soluble inorganic ions (WSIIs) are commonly observable airborne pollutants in the atmosphere that may have similar emission sources. In this study, the interrelated pollution characteristics of atmospheric speciated mercury and WSIIs were studied using a Piper diagram, correlation analysis, pollution episode analysis and potential source contribution function (PSCF) techniques. Also, an empirical regression equation for predicting the temporal variation in gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) was constructed. The results showed that the concentrations of GEM and particle-bound mercury (PBM) roughly increased with the increasing percentage values of NH4+ in cationic normality, and exponentially increased with the decreasing percentage values of Na+ + Mg2+ in cationic normality. Correlation analysis revealed that the atmospheric speciated mercury was positively (p &lt; 0.01) correlated with most water-soluble inorganic ions, especially for GEM, which was closely correlated with NO2, NOx, CO, PM2.5, NO3− SO42−, NH4+ and K+ (r &gt; 0.5, p &lt; 0.01), indicating that the emission sources of GEM were related to fossil fuel and biomass combustion, industrial activities, and traffic exhausts. Pollution episode analysis showed that PM2.5, WSIIs (including SO42−, NO3−, NH4+, K+ and Cl−), SO2 and NO2 generally exhibited synchronous variations with GEM and PBM, and positive correlations were observed between GEM and PM2.5, SO42−, NO3−, NH4+, K+, Cl−, SO2 and NO2 (r = 0.35–0.74, p-value &lt; 0.01). In addition, the potential source region of GEM was similar to that of PM2.5, SO42−, NO3−, NH4+, K+ and Ca2+. Based on the above findings, a satisfactory empirical regression equation, with PM2.5, NOx, CO and the percentage value of Na+ + Mg2+ in cationic normality as independent variables for GEM simulation, was constructed. The result showed that the variation in GEM concentrations could be predicted well by these variables. This model could serve as a potential substitute tool for GEM measurement in the future.

Gaseous elemental mercury emissions from informal E-Waste recycling facilities in Pakistan

Detrimental effects of mercury (Hg) on ecosystems and human health have been well-documented. Whereas emissions of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) from e-waste recycling have been reported in developed countries, much less is known about the situation in the Global South. Using a total of 132 passive air samplers, seasonally resolved concentrations of GEM in air were measured continuously at 32 informal e-waste recycling facilities and background location in Pakistan for a period of one year between September 2020 and December 2021. Annual average GEM concentrations at the studied locations ranged from 1.8 to 92 ng m−3. Among the studied cities, higher concentrations were measured in Karachi (mean ± s.d: 17 ± 22, range: 4.2–92 ng m−3), Lahore (16 ± 4.2, 8.2–22 ng m−3) and Peshawar (15 ± 17, 4.9–80 ng m−3), while lower levels were measured in Hyderabad (6.9 ± 6.2, 3.1–25 ng m−3), consistent with a higher rate of informal recycling activities in metropolitan areas. Seasonally, higher GEM levels occurred during autumn (15 ± 16: 3.3–92 ng m−3) and summer (13 ± 8.7: 1.8–80 ng m−3) than in winter (12 ± 8.4: 2.5–49 ng m−3) and spring (9.2 ± 7.3: 1.8–80 ng m−3), possibly reflecting enhanced volatilization at higher temperatures and/or varying magnitude of recycling operations in different seasons. Policies and strict regulations related to e-waste management should be developed and implemented urgently in the country.

Characterization of atmospheric mercury from mercury-added product manufacturing using passive air samplers

Although alternatives to mercury (Hg) are available in most products and industrial activities, Hg continues to be an ingredient in some products, including fluorescent lamps and electrical and electronic equipment (EEE). In this work, low-cost passive air samplers (PASs) were used to investigate the atmospheric Hg pollution in Zhongshan, a large industrial city and major hub of mercury-added product manufacturing in South China. The GEM concentrations in the atmosphere were measured for two weeks during the summer of 2019 at a total of 144 sites across Zhongshan. Comparison with the results of active sampling confirmed that the PASs yielded accurate and reliable gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) concentrations and were thus well-suited for multi-site field monitoring. The mean GEM concentrations in the areas with mercury-added product manufacturing activities (5.1 ± 0.4 ng m−3) were significantly higher than those in other parts of Zhongshan (1.5 ± 0.4 ng m−3), indicating that local releases, rather than regional transport, were responsible for the atmospheric Hg pollution. Elevated GEM concentrations (up to 11.4 ng m−3) were found in the vicinity of fluorescent lamp and EEE factories and workshops, indicating significant Hg vapor emissions, presumably from the outdated production technologies and non-standard operation by under-trained workers. The Hg emissions from mercury-added product manufacturing were estimated to be 0.06 and 7.8 t yr−1 for Zhongshan and China, respectively, based on the scales of fluorescent lamp and EEE production. The non-carcinogenic health risk of Zhongshan residents from inhalation and ingestion was judged acceptable, whereby the inhalation exposure in Hg-polluted areas exceeded that of dietary ingestion. These findings demonstrate that mercury-added product manufacturing still contributes notably to anthropogenic gaseous Hg releases in the industrial areas with intense mercury-added product manufacturing activities.

Use of atmospheric concentrations and passive samplers to assess surface-atmosphere exchange of gaseous mercury in forests

Direct measurements of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) exchanges over global ecosystems are challenging and require extensive and costly measurement systems. Here, we explore the use of atmospheric GEM concentration variability and passive samplers to assess underlying ecosystem GEM exchanges at two rural temperate forests in the northeastern United States. We find strong temporal alignments between atmospheric GEM concentration declines and ecosystem GEM deposition in spring at both forests, which followed patterns of CO2 and suggests that ambient air GEM concentration monitoring provides a proxy measurement to assess forest GEM sinks. In fall, we observe GEM concentration increases and reversal of GEM fluxes to emissions, but with poor temporal alignments. Diel GEM concentration variability did not correspond to diel patterns of ecosystem GEM fluxes, which is driven by boundary layer dynamics with different atmospheric mixing depths during day- and nighttime. Passive samplers (PASs) deployed to measure vertical GEM gradients across six heights throughout one of the forest canopies showed excellent agreements with active measurements in detecting seasonal concentration patterns at all deployment heights. We find frequent qualitative agreement between the direction of active and PAS derived concentration gradients, but small concentration differences over small (1.3 and 4.9 m) distances prevent a quantitative comparison of methods. Furthermore, time-averaged GEM concentration gradient measurements are always biased towards stable nighttime periods, while ecosystem GEM fluxes are dominated by daytime exchanges, which results in the inability of integrated measurements such as PAS to correctly quantify forest GEM exchanges. We conclude that concentration measurements both via active and passive sampling can serve as proxies to assess underlying ecosystem GEM sinks and sources, but that the use of passive samplers to quantify GEM exchange via gradient measurements is limited due their strong nighttime biases.

Changes in Atmospheric Gaseous Elemental Mercury Concentrations and Isotopic Compositions at Mt. Changbai During 2015–2021 and Mt. Ailao During 2017–2021 in China

AbstractChina is the largest contributor to the global total anthropogenic mercury (Hg) emissions. However, the trend in anthropogenic Hg emissions in recent years in China has not been effectively evaluated due to the lack of long‐term atmospheric Hg observations. This study documents the changes in atmospheric gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) concentrations and isotopic compositions at Mt. Changbai (MCB) in northeastern China during 2015–2021 and Mt. Ailao (MAL) in southwestern China during 2017–2021, and explores the potential factors controlling these changes. GEM concentrations showed continuous declines from 2015 to 2021 (−2.1 ± 0.6% yr−1) at MCB and from 2017 to 2021 (−4.0 ± 1.4% yr−1) at MAL. Accompanied with these GEM declines are positive shifts in δ202Hg (medians: from 0.42 to 0.46‰ at MCB and from 0.17 to 0.57‰ at MAL), and negative shifts in Δ199Hg (medians: from −0.17‰ to −0.21‰ at MCB and from −0.10‰ to −0.17‰ at MAL) and Δ200Hg values (medians: from −0.07‰ to −0.08‰ at MCB and from −0.03‰ to −0.05‰ at MAL) (at significant levels for Δ199Hg at MCB and δ202Hg and Δ199Hg at MAL). These changes were mainly caused by the decreases in regional anthropogenic emissions in the study areas. Based on a ternary mixing model with Δ199Hg and Δ200Hg as input, we estimate decline rates of 5.8 ± 2.8 and 4.8 ± 3.0% yr−1 for the regional anthropogenic GEM emissions in northeastern and southwestern China, respectively.

Environmental impact of potentially toxic elements on soils, sediments, waters, and air nearby an abandoned Hg-rich fahlore mine (Mt. Avanza, Carnic Alps, NE Italy)

The decommissioned fahlore Cu-Sb(-Ag) mine at Mt. Avanza (Carnic Alps, Italy) is a rare example of exploited ore deposits, as the tetrahedrite (Cu6[Cu4(Fe,Zn)2]Sb4S13) is the main ore mineral found. This multi-compartmental geochemical characterisation approach provides one of the first case studies regarding the geochemical behaviour and fate of Hg, Sb, As, Cu, and other elements in solid and water matrices and of Hg in the atmosphere in an environment affected by the mining activity of a fahlore ore deposit. Elevated concentrations of the elements (Cu, Sb, As, Pb, Zn, Hg) associated with both (Zn-Hg)-tetrahedrite and to other minor ore minerals in mine wastes, soils, and stream sediments were observed. Concentrations in waters and stream sediments greatly decreased with increasing distance from the mining area and the Igeo index values testify the highest levels of sediment contamination inside the mine area. Thallium and Ge were associated with the “lithogenic component” and not to sulfosalt/sulphide minerals. Although mine drainage water often slightly exceeded the national regulatory limits for Sb and As, with Sb being more mobile than As, the relatively low dissolved concentrations indicate a moderate stability of the tetrahedrite. The fate of Hg at the investigated fahlore mining district appeared similar to cinnabar mining sites around the world. Weak solubility but the potential evasion of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) into the atmosphere also appear to be characteristics of Hg in fahlore ores. Although GEM concentrations are such that they do not present a pressing concern, real-time field surveys allowed for the easy identification of Hg sources, proving to be an effective, suitable high-resolution indirect approach for optimising soil sampling surveys and detecting mine wastes and mine adits.

Seven-year monitoring of mercury in wet precipitation and atmosphere at the Amsterdam Island GMOS station

Mercury (Hg) fate and transport research requires more effort to obtain a deep knowledge of its biogeochemical cycle, particularly in the Southern Hemisphere and Tropics that are still missing of distributed monitoring sites.Continuous monitoring of atmospheric Hg concentrations and trend worldwide is relevant for the effectiveness evaluation of the Minamata Convention on Mercury (MCM) actions. In this context, Gaseous Elemental Mercury (GEM) and total mercury (THg) in precipitations were monitored from 2013 to 2019 at the Amsterdam Island Observatory (AMS - 37°48′S, 77°34′E) to provide insights into the Hg pathway in the remote southern Indian Ocean, also considering ancillary dataset of Rn-222, CO2, CO, and CH4. GEM average concentration was 1.06 ± 0.07 ng m−3, with a slight increase during the austral winter due to both higher wind speed over the surface ocean and contributions from southern Africa. In wet depositions, THg average concentration was 2.39 ± 1.17 ng L−1, whereas the annual flux averaged 2.04 ± 0.80 μg m−2 year−1. In general, both GEM and Volume-Weighted Mean Concentration (VWMC) of THg did not show an increasing/decreasing trend over the seven-year period, suggesting a substantial lack of evolution about emission of Hg reaching AMS.Air masses Cluster Analysis and Potential Source Contribution Function showed that oceanic evasion was the main Hg contributor at AMS, while further contributions were attributable to long-range transport events from southern Africa, particularly when the occurrence of El Niño increased the frequency of wildfires.

Applying Passive Air Sampling and Isotopic Characterization to Assess Spatial Variability of Gaseous Elemental Mercury Across Ontario, Canada

AbstractThis study deployed 59 passive air samplers (PAS) across the province of Ontario, Canada (and eight additional deployments in bordering states of northern USA) to assess the influence of local/regional sources, temporal differences, and possible transformations in the atmospheric gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) pool. The spatial mapping achieved with the PASs allowed for the observation of differences in GEM and its isotopic composition over the region. Concentrations of GEM were higher with more negative δ202Hg values near urban/industrial areas and suspected emission sources in southern Ontario. In northern Ontario, far from industrial influences, lower concentrations of GEM with isotopically more positive δ202Hg values were found at the boreal forest sites compared to sites within the Hudson Bay Lowlands. The differences in northern Ontario may be from greater uptake of GEM by the boreal forest removing isotopically light Hg and lowering concentrations. Lower GEM and a shift toward more positive δ202Hg were also observed during the summer relative to other times of year supporting vegetation uptake as an important sink for GEM. PASs were also deployed along a transect of increasing distance from a Hg recycling facility. The Hg emissions from the facility had unique positive Δ199Hg and Δ200Hg signatures, but GEM concentrations and isotopic compositions returned to background within 400 m of the facility. The province‐wide variations in atmospheric GEM and isotopic compositions show that both sources (e.g., urban/industrial emissions) and sinks (e.g., vegetation uptake) contribute to the spatial and temporal patterns of the residual atmosphere GEM pool.

Long-range transport of atmospheric speciated mercury from the eastern waters of Taiwan Island to northern South China Sea

This study explored the temporospatial distribution, gas-particle partition, and pollution sources of atmospheric speciated mercury (ASM) from the eastern offshore waters of the Taiwan Island (TI) to the northern South China Sea (SCS). Both gaseous and particulate mercury were simultaneously sampled at three remote sites in four seasons. The average concentrations of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM), gaseous oxidized mercury (GOM), and particulate bound mercury (PBM) were 2.05 ± 0.45 ng/m3, 19.17 ± 5.39 pg/m3, and 0.11 ± 0.06 ng/m3, respectively. The concentrations of GEM and PBM in the cold seasons were higher than those in the warm seasons, but those of GOM had an opposite trend. In terms of gas-solid partition, ASM was apportioned as 91.3–97.3% of GEM and 2.7–8.7% of GOM and PBM. The average concentrations of GEM, GOM, and PBM at the Green Island (GI) were 2.21 ± 0.47 ng/m3, 22.31 ± 5.35 pg/m3, and 0.12 ± 0.06 ng/m3; those at the Kenting Peninsula (KT) were 2.11 ± 0.43 ng/m3, 20.57 ± 4.38 pg/m3, and 0.11 ± 0.06 ng/m3; and those at the Dongsha Islands (DS) were 1.84 ± 0.40 ng/m3, 15.19 ± 3.58 pg/m3, and 0.08 ± 0.05 ng/m3, respectively. Overall, the spatial distribution of ASM concentrations showed the order as: GI > KT > DS. Air masses blown mainly from the West Pacific Ocean (WPO) and SCS in summer showed the lowest ASM concentrations. Oppositely, high ASM concentrations were commonly observed in spring and winter when polluted air masses were blown by Asian Northeastern Monsoons (ANMs). The transport routes of polluted air masses were originated mainly from North China, Central China, Northeast China, Korea and Japan, and mostly passed through the urban and industrial regions in the northeastern Asian countries.

Primary Measurement of Gaseous Elemental Mercury Concentration with a Dynamic Range of Six Decades.

We present a primary method for absolute reference material-free measurement of gaseous elemental mercury mass concentration based on laser absorption spectroscopy at wavelengths near 254 nm and anchored to the international system of units. A 76 m-long multipass cell provides a detection limit of 1 ng m-3 for an averaging time of 8 min. A dual-cell arrangement, comprising a single-pass and a multipass cell, provides a dynamic range of six decades and spans from ambient to emission levels of gaseous elemental mercury (1 ng m-3 to 1000 μg m-3). The relative standard uncertainty of the measurement is 0.5% in the 0.25 to 1000 μg m-3 range.

Gaseous elemental mercury and its evasion fluxes in the marine boundary layer of the marginal seas of the northwestern Pacific: Results from two cruises in September–December 2019

There are many questions regarding the behavior of mercury in the sea-atmosphere system of the northwestern Pacific. Continuous underway measurements of atmospheric gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) and measurements of sea-air GEM evasion fluxes were carried out in the marginal seas of northwestern Pacific from the South China Sea to the Sea of Okhotsk in fall-winter 2019. The median GEM concentration (1.1 ng/m3) was lower than both the background value and the averages previously observed in these areas. A latitudinal gradient of atmospheric GEM and GEM evasion fluxes with maximum values at southern latitudes was found. The following areas have been identified as potential source areas: the Kurill area of the Pacific Ocean Northeast China, Korean Peninsula, and the territory from the southwest coast of the Yellow Sea to the south of Indochina. Seasonal variations were observed in the Sea of Japan and East China Sea with higher GEM concentrations in winter than in fall. Our data and analysis of published data showed significant relationships between GEM evasion fluxes, latitude and sea surface temperature (SST). It seems that on a global scale, along with the GEM gradient between water and atmosphere, SST is the most significant parameter for sea-air GEM evasion fluxes.

Optimization and application of passive air sampling method for gaseous elemental mercury in Ulsan, South Korea.

We compared uptake rates and concentrations of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) by passive sampling conditions and investigated the spatial distribution of GEM in Ulsan, the largest industrial city in South Korea. For the optimization of sampling conditions, two outer sampling containers (cylindrical polyethylene terephthalate and two stainless steel bowls), two different sulfur contents of the sorbent (16.3% and 26.3%), and three sampling periods (1, 2, and 3months) were considered. The uptake rates of GEM were not statistically different by the sampling container, but they were increased with the sulfur contents of activated carbon. A sampling condition using two stainless bowls and lower sulfur contents of activated carbon for 2-3months was preferred with the highest precision of GEM concentrations. With the same method, passive air samples were collected for 3months in duplicate from 10 sites in Ulsan. The concentrations of GEM ranged from 3.13 to 11.2ng/m3 (mean 4.65ng/m3), and the highest concentration was measured at a non-ferrous industrial complex. A zinc smelter in the non-ferrous industrial complex was identified as a major mercury source in Ulsan. This study is the first passive air sampling study investigating the spatial distributions of GEM in different types of industrial areas as well as residential areas of Ulsan.

Lichen transplants as indicators of gaseous elemental mercury concentrations

Lichens play an important role in the biogeochemical cycling of mercury (Hg) and are commonly used as indicators of Hg enrichment in remote and anthropogenically impacted environments. To assess their capacity for Hg uptake and accumulation, we determined the concentration of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) in air and the concentration of total Hg (THg) in transplanted thalli of two lichen species. Lichen transplants and passive air samplers (PASs) were concurrently deployed, side by side, at 10 sites within an abandoned mining area, characterized by large gradients in atmospheric Hg contamination. Highly variable time-weighted GEM concentrations determined by the PASs, ranging from 17 to 4,200 ng/m3, were mirrored by generally high Hg concentrations in transplanted thalli of both Xanthoria parietina (174–8,800 ng/g) and Evernia prunastri (143–5,500 ng/g). Hg concentrations in the two species co-varied linearly indicating about 60% greater Hg accumulation in X. parietina than in E. prunastri. Whereas Hg uptake in the fruticose E. prunastri increased linearly with GEM, a power law equation with a fractional exponent described the uptake in the foliose X. parietina. Extrapolating the relationships observed here to higher GEM levels yielded concentrations in lichen that agree very well with those measured in an earlier fumigation experiment performed under laboratory-controlled conditions. The uptake model of X. parietina was further verified by correctly estimating GEM concentrations from the THg measured in autochthonous thalli collected from the urban area adjacent to the mine site. Passive sampling can effectively provide time-weighted data of suitable spatial resolution to quantitatively describe GEM assimilation by lichens. Therefore, the combined use of passive sampling and lichen transplants can contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the role of lichens, and potentially also of other cryptogams, in the deposition of atmospheric Hg to terrestrial ecosystems.
