Constraints on the z ∼ 5 Star-forming Galaxy Luminosity Function From Hubble Space Telescope Imaging of an Unbiased and Complete Sample of Long Gamma-Ray Burst Host Galaxies

We present rest-frame UV Hubble Space Telescope imaging of the largest and most complete sample of 23 long-duration gamma-ray burst (GRB) host galaxies between redshifts 4 and 6. Of these 23, we present new WFC3/F110W imaging for 19 of the hosts, which we combine with archival WFC3/F110W and WFC3/F140W imaging for the remaining four. We use the photometry of the host galaxies from this sample to characterize both the rest-frame UV luminosity function (LF) and the size–luminosity relation of the sample. We find that when assuming the standard Schechter-function parameterization for the UV LF, the GRB host sample is best fit with α=−1.30−0.25+0.30 and M*=−20.33−0.54+0.44 mag, which are consistent with results based on z ∼ 5 Lyman-break galaxies. We find that ∼68% of our size–luminosity measurements fall within or below the same relation for Lyman-break galaxies at z ∼ 4. This study observationally confirms expectations that at z ∼ 5 Lyman-break and GRB host galaxies should trace the same population and demonstrates the utility of GRBs as probes of hidden star formation in the high-redshift Universe. Under the assumption that GRBs unbiasedly trace star formation at this redshift, our nondetection fraction of 7/23 is consistent at the 95% confidence level with 13%–53% of star formation at redshift z ∼ 5 occurring in galaxies fainter than our detection limit of M 1600Å ≈ −18.3 mag.

Comparing emission- and absorption-based gas-phase metallicities in GRB host galaxies at z = 2−4 using JWST

ABSTRACT Much of what is known of the chemical composition of the universe is based on emission line spectra from star-forming galaxies. Emission-based inferences are, nevertheless, model-dependent and they are dominated by light from luminous star-forming regions. An alternative and sensitive probe of the metallicity of galaxies is through absorption lines imprinted on the luminous afterglow spectra of long gamma ray bursts (GRBs) from neutral material within their host galaxy. We present results from a JWST/NIRSpec programme to investigate for the first time the relation between the metallicity of neutral gas probed in absorption by GRB afterglows and the metallicity of the star-forming regions for the same host galaxy sample. Using an initial sample of eight GRB host galaxies at z = 2.1–4.7, we find a tight relation between absorption and emission line metallicities when using the recently proposed $\hat{R}$ metallicity diagnostic (±0.2 dex). This agreement implies a relatively chemically homogeneous multiphase interstellar medium and indicates that absorption and emission line probes can be directly compared. However, the relation is less clear when using other diagnostics, such as R23 and R3. We also find possible evidence of an elevated N/O ratio in the host galaxy of GRB 090323 at z = 4.7, consistent with what has been seen in other z > 4 galaxies. Ultimate confirmation of an enhanced N/O ratio and of the relation between absorption and emission line metallicities will require a more direct determination of the emission line metallicity via the detection of temperature-sensitive auroral lines in our GRB host galaxy sample.

A Population of Short-duration Gamma-Ray Bursts with Dwarf Host Galaxies

We present a population of 11 of the faintest (>25.5 AB mag) short gamma-ray burst (GRB) host galaxies. We model their sparse available observations using the stellar population inference code Prospector-β and develop a novel implementation to incorporate the galaxy mass–radius relation. Assuming these hosts are randomly drawn from the galaxy population and conditioning this draw on their observed flux and size in a few photometric bands, we determine that these hosts have dwarf galaxy stellar masses of 7.0≲log(M*/M⊙)≲9.1 . This is striking as only 14% of short GRB hosts with previous inferred stellar masses had M * ≲ 109 M ⊙. We further show these short GRBs have smaller physical and host-normalized offsets than the rest of the population, suggesting that the majority of their neutron star (NS) merger progenitors were retained within their hosts. The presumably shallow potentials of these hosts translate to small escape velocities of ∼5.5–80 km s−1, indicative of either low postsupernova systemic velocities or short inspiral times. While short GRBs with identified dwarf host galaxies now comprise ≈14% of the total Swift-detected population, a number are likely missing in the current population, as larger systemic velocities (observed from the Galactic NS population) would result in highly offset short GRBs and less secure host associations. However, the revelation of a population of short GRBs retained in low-mass host galaxies offers a natural explanation for the observed r-process enrichment via NS mergers in Local Group dwarf galaxies, and has implications for gravitational-wave follow-up strategies.

Accessing the Host Galaxies of Long Gamma-Ray Bursts with Next-generation Telescopes

We present a method to estimate the detection expectations of host galaxies of long gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) in the grizJHKL bands. It is found that given the same limiting magnitude mgrizJHKL,lim in each band, the z band produces the largest number of overall LGRB hosts and low-mass hosts (M * ≤ 108 M ⊙) at mgrizJHKL,lim≳26 mag. For the detection of high-redshift LGRB hosts (redshift ≥5), it is recommended to prioritize the L band, due to its good performance at both low and high limiting magnitudes. We specifically estimate the expectation of LGRB host detection with mgrizJHKL,lim=28 mag, which the James Webb Space Telescope can partially attain. We find that there may exist 116, 259, 277, 439, 266, 294, 274, and 316 LGRB hosts, including 0.54, 31, 28, 143, 12, 20, 14, and 35 low-mass ones in the grizJHKL bands and 13, 14, 15, 14, and 15 high-redshift ones in the zJHKL bands, for 15 yr Swift LGRBs with S ≥ 10−6 erg cm−2. The results show that the study of LGRB hosts under next-generation observational conditions holds significant potential, especially for low-mass host studies. However, it appears that the deeper sensitivities of galaxy telescopes may not significantly enhance statistical studies of high-redshift hosts. Strategies aimed at increasing the number of distant LGRB hosts may require the expansion of high-redshift LGRB detections.

A Surprising Lack of Metallicity Evolution with Redshift in the Long Gamma-Ray Burst Host Galaxy Population

The number of long-duration gamma-ray burst (LGRB) host galaxies with measured metallicities and host masses has expanded sufficiently to investigate how the distributions of these properties change with redshift. Using the combined host galaxy metallicity sample from Graham & Fruchter and Krühler et al., we find a surprising lack of evolution in the LGRB metallicity distribution across different redshifts. In particular, the fraction of LGRB hosts with relatively high metallicity (12+log(O/H) ≥ 8.4) remains essentially constant out to z = 2.5. This result is at odds with the evolution in the mass–metallicity relation of typical galaxies, which become progressively more metal poor with increasing redshift. A similar result is found when converting the LGRB host galaxy mass distribution taken from the Swift GRB Host Galaxy Legacy Survey (SHOALS) sample to a corresponding metallicity distribution by applying a redshift-dependent mass–metallicity relation. The SHOALS sample is compiled using an unbiased selection function implying that the observed lack of evolution in the host galaxy high-metallicity distribution is not caused by selection effects. However, the LGRB host galaxy metallicities estimated from the stellar mass are typically a quarter dex higher at all redshifts than the metallicity we measure spectroscopically. This implies that using mass–metallicity relationships to estimate host metallicities will thus produce a substantial systematic bias.

Main Sequence to Starburst Transitioning Galaxies: Gamma-Ray Burst Hosts at z ∼ 2

Star-forming galaxies populate a main sequence (MS), a well-defined relation between stellar mass (M *) and star formation rate (SFR). Starburst (SB) galaxies lie significantly above the relation, whereas quenched galaxies lie below the sequence. In order to study the evolution of galaxies on the SFR–M * plane and its connection to the gas content, we use the fact that recent episodes of star formation can be pinpointed by the existence of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Here we present sensitive [C i] nondetections of z ∼ 2 ultraluminous infrared (ULIRG) GRB host galaxies. We find that our GRB hosts have similar molecular masses to those of other ULIRGs. However, unlike other ULIRGs, the GRB hosts are located at the MS or only a factor of a few above it. Hence, our GRB hosts are caught in the transition toward the SB phase. This is further supported by the estimated depletion times, which are similar to those of other transitioning galaxies. The GRB hosts are [C i]-dark galaxies, defined as having a [C i]/CO temperature brightness ratio of <0.1. Such a low [C i]/CO ratio has been found in high-density environments (n H > 104 cm−3) where CO is shielded from photodissociation, leading to underabundances of [C i]. This is consistent with the merger process that is indeed suggested for our GRB hosts by their morphologies.

Finding LoTSS of hosts for GRBs: a search for galaxy–gamma-ray burst coincidences at low frequencies with LOFAR

ABSTRACT The LOFAR (Low Frequency Array) Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) is an invaluable new tool for investigating the properties of sources at low frequencies and has helped to open up the study of galaxy populations in this regime. In this work, we perform a search for host galaxies of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We use the relative density of sources in Data Release 2 (DR2) of LoTSS to define the probability of a chance alignment, Pchance, and find 18 sources corresponding to 17 GRBs that meet a Pchance &amp;lt; 1 per cent criterion. We examine the nature and properties of these radio sources using both LOFAR data and broad-band information, including their radio spectral index, star formation rate estimates, and any contributions from active galactic nucleus emission. Assuming that the radio emission is dominated by star formation, we find that our sources show high star formation rates (101–103 M⊙ yr−1) compared with both a field galaxy sample and a sample of core-collapse supernova hosts, and the majority of putative hosts are consistent with ultra-luminous infrared galaxy classifications. As a result of our analyses, we define a final sample of eight likely GRB host candidates in the LoTSS DR2 survey.

Measurement methods for gamma-ray bursts redshifts

In the era of multi-messenger astronomy, gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with known redshifts, especially high-redshift GRBs, are a powerful tool for studying the structure and evolution of the early Universe. We review the background, the history, and the application of measurement methods of GRB redshifts in astronomy. Based on different observation targets, two measurement methods are mainly introduced. One is on GRB afterglow, the other is on GRB host galaxy. There are various processing methods belonging to measurement methods based on afterglow, including spectral measurement method of afterglow and afterglow spectral energy distribution fitting method with improved methods. There are also numerous measurement methods based on host galaxy, such as spectral measurement method of host galaxy, template matching method of host galaxy, some automatic spectroscopic redshift measurement methods, and machine learning methods. We subsequently introduce the principles, effects, and performance of these methods. We enumerate several detection and measurement instruments, which have been used in observation. The characteristics, advantages, disadvantages, and applicability of the GRB redshift measurement methods are summarized and analyzed. Furthermore, we provide a data set of 611 GRBs with measured redshift. The data set has been collected since 1997. Analysis and statistics are presented based on this data set. We summarize the characteristics of GRBs such as location, time, and accuracy. Finally, we introduce Space-based multi-band astronomical Variable Objects Monitor (SVOM) mission dedicated to searching high redshift GRBs. We also introduce the application prospect of various redshift measurement methods in SVOM mission.

Dissecting the interstellar medium of a z = 6.3 galaxy

The study of the properties of galaxies in the first billion years after the Big Bang is one of the major topics of current astrophysics. Optical and near-infrared spectroscopy of the afterglows of long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) provides a powerful diagnostic tool to probe the interstellar medium (ISM) of their host galaxies and foreground absorbers, even up to the highest redshifts. We analyze the VLT/X-shooter afterglow spectrum of GRB 210905A, triggered by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, and detect neutral hydrogen, low-ionization, high-ionization, and fine-structure absorption lines from a complex system at z = 6.3118, which we associate with the GRB host galaxy. We use them to study the ISM properties of the host system, revealing the metallicity, kinematics, and chemical abundance pattern of its gas along the GRB line of sight. We also detect absorption lines from at least two foreground absorbers at z = 5.7390 and z = 2.8296. The total metallicity of the z ∼ 6.3 system is [M/H]tot = −1.72 ± 0.13, after correcting for dust depletion and taking α-element enhancement into account, as suggested by our analysis. This is consistent with the values found for the other two GRBs at z ∼ 6 with spectroscopic data showing metal absorption lines (GRB 050904 and GRB 130606A), and it is at the higher end of the metallicity distribution of quasar damped Lyman-α systems (QSO-DLAs) extrapolated to such a high redshift. In addition, we determine the overall amount of dust and dust-to-metal mass ratio (DTM) ([Zn/Fe]fit = 0.33 ± 0.09 and DTM = 0.18 ± 0.03). We find indications of nucleosynthesis due to massive stars and, for some of the components of the gas clouds, we find evidence of peculiar nucleosynthesis, with an overabundance of aluminum (as also found for GRB 130606A). From the analysis of fine-structure lines, we determine distances of several kiloparsecs for the low-ionization gas clouds closest to the GRB. Those are farther distances than usually found for GRB host absorption systems, possibly due to the very high number of ionizing photons produced by the GRB that could ionize the line of sight up to several hundreds of parsecs. Using the HST/F140W image of the GRB field, we show the GRB host galaxy (with a possible afterglow contamination) as well as multiple objects within 2″ from the GRB position. We discuss the galaxy structure and kinematics that could explain our observations, also taking into account a tentative detection of Lyman-α emission at z = 6.3449 (∼1200 km s−1 from the GRB redshift in velocity space), and the observational properties of Lyman-α emitters at very high redshift. This study shows the amazing potential of GRBs to access detailed information on the properties (metal enrichment, gas kinematic, dust content, nucleosynthesis...) of very high-redshift galaxies, independently of the galaxy luminosity. Deep spectroscopic observations with VLT/MUSE and JWST will offer the unique possibility of combining the information presented in this paper with the properties of the ionized gas, with the goal of better understanding how galaxies in the reionization era form and evolve.

The First JWST Spectrum of a GRB Afterglow: No Bright Supernova in Observations of the Brightest GRB of all Time, GRB 221009A

We present James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of the afterglow of GRB 221009A, the brightest gamma-ray burst (GRB) ever observed. This includes the first mid-IR spectra of any GRB, obtained with JWST/Near Infrared Spectrograph (0.6–5.5 micron) and Mid-Infrared Instrument (5–12 micron), 12 days after the burst. Assuming that the intrinsic spectral slope is a single power law, with F ν ∝ ν −β , we obtain β ≈ 0.35, modified by substantial dust extinction with A V = 4.9. This suggests extinction above the notional Galactic value, possibly due to patchy extinction within the Milky Way or dust in the GRB host galaxy. It further implies that the X-ray and optical/IR regimes are not on the same segment of the synchrotron spectrum of the afterglow. If the cooling break lies between the X-ray and optical/IR, then the temporal decay rates would only match a post-jet-break model, with electron index p < 2, and with the jet expanding into a uniform ISM medium. The shape of the JWST spectrum is near-identical in the optical/near-IR to X-SHOOTER spectroscopy obtained at 0.5 days and to later time observations with HST. The lack of spectral evolution suggests that any accompanying supernova (SN) is either substantially fainter or bluer than SN 1998bw, the proto-type GRB-SN. Our HST observations also reveal a disk-like host galaxy, viewed close to edge-on, that further complicates the isolation of any SN component. The host galaxy appears rather typical among long-GRB hosts and suggests that the extreme properties of GRB 221009A are not directly tied to its galaxy-scale environment.

Revealing ultra-high-energy cosmic ray acceleration with multi-messenger observations of the nearby GRB 980425/SN 1998bw

The origin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) is one of the most mystifying issues in astroparticle physics. It has been suggested that gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are excellent acceleration sites for cosmic rays. The propagation of UHECRs from the GRB host galaxy to the Earth should generate delayed secondary photons and neutrinos. Here we present a dedicated search for delayed UHECR and neutrino emission centered around the position of nearby GRB 980425/SN 1998bw. Located at a distance of 36.9 Mpc, GRB 980425/SN 1998bw is well within the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin (GZK) distance horizon. We find no evidence for UHECR or neutrino clustering around the GRB 980425/SN 1998bw position between 2004 and 2020. Under ideal propagation conditions, we propose that it might be possible to detect an excess from delayed UHECRs around GRB 980425/SN 1998bw within the next 100 years if the intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF) strength is B ≤ 3 × 10-13 G.

The internal metallicity distributions of simulated galaxies from EAGLE, Illustris, and IllustrisTNG at z = 1.8–4 as probed by gamma-ray burst hosts

ABSTRACT Massive stars are thought to be progenitors of long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), most likely with a bias favouring low-metallicity progenitors. Because galaxies do not have a constant metallicity throughout, the combination of line-of-sight absorption metallicity inferred from GRB afterglow spectroscopy and of host galaxy global metallicity derived from emission lines diagnostics represents a powerful way to probe both the bias function for GRB progenitors and the chemical inhomogeneities across star-forming regions. In this study, we predict the relationship between Zabs and Zemiss using three different hydrodynamical cosmological simulations: Illustris, EAGLE, and IllustrisTNG. We find that while the qualitative shape of the curve relating emission versus absorption metallicity remains the same, the predicted relationship between these two observables is significantly different between the simulations. Using data for the host galaxy of GRB121024A for which both Zabs and Zemiss have been measured, we find marginal support for the Illustris simulation as producing the most-realistic internal metallicity distributions within star-forming galaxies at cosmic noon. Overall, all simulations predict similar properties for the bulk of the GRB host galaxy population, but each has distinct features in the tail of the Zabs-Zemiss distribution that in principle allow to discriminate between models if a sufficiently large sample of observations are available (i.e. N ≳ 11 on average). Substantial progress is expected in the near future, with upcoming JWST/NIRspec observations of 10 GRB host galaxies for which absorption metallicity from the afterglow spectra exists.

Short GRB Host Galaxies. II. A Legacy Sample of Redshifts, Stellar Population Properties, and Implications for Their Neutron Star Merger Origins

We present the stellar population properties of 69 short gamma-ray burst (GRB) host galaxies, representing the largest uniformly modeled sample to date. Using the Prospector stellar population inference code, we jointly fit photometry and/or spectroscopy of each host galaxy. We find a population median redshift of (68% confidence), including nine photometric redshifts at z ≳ 1. We further find a median mass-weighted age of t m = Gyr, stellar mass of log(M */M ⊙) = , star formation rate of SFR = M ⊙ yr−1, stellar metallicity of log(Z */Z ⊙) = , and dust attenuation of mag (68% confidence). Overall, the majority of short GRB hosts are star-forming (≈84%), with small fractions that are either transitioning (≈6%) or quiescent (≈10%); however, we observe a much larger fraction (≈40%) of quiescent and transitioning hosts at z ≲ 0.25, commensurate with galaxy evolution. We find that short GRB hosts populate the star-forming main sequence of normal field galaxies, but do not include as many high-mass galaxies as the general galaxy population, implying that their binary neutron star (BNS) merger progenitors are dependent on a combination of host star formation and stellar mass. The distribution of ages and redshifts implies a broad delay-time distribution, with a fast-merging channel at z > 1 and a decreased neutron star binary formation efficiency from high to low redshifts. If short GRB hosts are representative of BNS merger hosts within the horizon of current gravitational wave detectors, these results can inform future searches for electromagnetic counterparts. Observational Inference on the Delay Time Distribution of Short Gamma-Ray Bursts

The delay time distribution of neutron star mergers provides critical insights into binary evolution processes and the merger rate evolution of compact object binaries. However, current observational constraints on this delay time distribution rely on the small sample of Galactic double neutron stars (with uncertain selection effects), a single multimessenger gravitational wave event, and indirect evidence of neutron star mergers based on r-process enrichment. We use a sample of 68 host galaxies of short gamma-ray bursts to place novel constraints on the delay time distribution and leverage this result to infer the merger rate evolution of compact object binaries containing neutron stars. We recover a power-law slope of (median and 90% credible interval) with α < −1.31 at 99% credibility, a minimum delay time of with at 99% credibility, and a maximum delay time constrained to at 99% credibility. We find these constraints to be broadly consistent with theoretical expectations, although our recovered power-law slope is substantially steeper than the conventional value of α = −1, and our minimum delay time is larger than the typically assumed value of 10 Myr. Pairing this cosmological probe of the fate of compact object binary systems with the Galactic population of double neutron stars will be crucial for understanding the unique selection effects governing both of these populations. In addition to probing a significantly larger redshift regime of neutron star mergers than possible with current gravitational wave detectors, complementing our results with future multimessenger gravitational wave events will also help determine if short gamma-ray bursts ubiquitously result from compact object binary mergers.

Photometric studies on the host galaxies of gamma-ray bursts using 3.6m Devasthal optical telescope

In this article, we present multi-band photometric observations and analysis of the host galaxies for a sample of five interesting gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) observed using the 3.6m Devasthal Optical Telescope (DOT) and the back-end instruments. The host galaxy observations of GRBs provide unique opportunities to estimate the stellar mass, ages, star-formation rates, and other vital properties of the burst environments and hence progenitors. We performed a detailed spectral energy distribution (SED) modeling of the five host galaxies using an advanced tool called Prospector, a stellar population synthesis model. Furthermore, we compared the results with a larger sample of well-studied host galaxies of GRBs, supernovae, and normal star-forming galaxies. Our SED modeling suggests that GRB 130603B, GRB 140102A, GRB 190829A, and GRB 200826A have massive host galaxies with high star formation rates (SFRs). On the other hand, a supernovae-connected GRB 030329 has a rare low-mass galaxy with a low star formation rate. We also find that GRB 190829A has the highest (in our sample) amount of visual dust extinction and gas in its local environment of the host, suggesting that the observed very high energy emission from this burst might have a unique local environment. Broadly, the five GRBs in our sample satisfy the typical correlations between host galaxies parameters and these physical parameters are more common to normal star-forming galaxies at the high-redshift Universe. Our results also demonstrate the capabilities of 3.6m DOT and the back-end instruments for the deeper photometric studies of the host galaxies of energetic transients such as GRBs, supernovae, and other transients in the long run.

The Stellar-mass Function of Long Gamma-Ray Burst Host Galaxies

Long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been discussed as a potential tool to probe the cosmic star formation rate (SFR) for a long time. Some studies found an enhancement in the GRB rate relative to the galaxy-inferred SFR at high redshifts, which indicates that GRBs may not be good tracers of star formation. However, in these studies, the GRB rate measured at any redshift is an average over all galaxies at that epoch. A deep understanding of the connection between GRB production and environment also needs to characterize the population of GRB host galaxies directly. Based on a complete sample of GRB hosts, we constrain the stellar-mass function (SMF) of GRB hosts, and examine redshift evolution in the GRB host population. Our results confirm that a strong redshift evolution in energy (with an evolution index of ) or in density () is needed in order to account for the observations. The GRB host SMF can be well described by the Schechter function with a power-law index ξ ≈ −1.10 and a break mass M b,0 ≈ 4.9 × 1010 M ⊙, independent of the assumed evolutionary effects. This is the first formulation of the GRB host SMF. The observed discrepancy between the GRB rate and the galaxy-inferred SFR may also be explained by an evolving SMF.

Are the host galaxies of long gamma-ray bursts more compact than star-forming galaxies of the field?

Context. Long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) offer a promising tool for tracing the cosmic history of star formation, especially at high redshift, where conventional methods are known to suffer from intrinsic biases. Previous studies of GRB host galaxies at low redshift showed that high surface density of stellar mass and high surface density of star formation rate (SFR) can potentially enhance the GRB production. Evaluating the effect of such stellar densities at high redshift is therefore crucial to fully control the ability of long GRBs for probing the activity of star formation in the distant Universe. Aims. We assess how the size, stellar mass, and star formation rate surface densities of distant galaxies affect the probability of their hosting a long GRB, using a sample of GRB hosts at z &gt; 1 and a control sample of star-forming sources from the field. Methods. We gathered a sample of 45 GRB host galaxies at 1 &lt; z &lt; 3.1 observed with the Hubble Space Telescope WFC3 camera in the near-infrared. Our subsample at 1 &lt; z &lt; 2 has cumulative distributions of redshift and stellar mass consistent with the host galaxies of known unbiased GRB samples, while our GRB host selection at 2 &lt; z &lt; 3.1 has lower statistics and is probably biased toward the high end of the stellar mass function. Using the GALFIT parametric approach, we modeled the GRB host light profile with a Sérsic component and derived the half-light radius for 35 GRB hosts, which we used to estimate the star formation rate and stellar mass surface densities of each object. We compared the distribution of these physical quantities to the SFR-weighted properties of a complete sample of star-forming galaxies from the 3D-HST deep survey at a comparable redshift and stellar mass. Results. We show that similarly to z &lt; 1, GRB hosts are smaller in size and they have higher stellar mass and star formation rate surface densities than field galaxies at 1 &lt; z &lt; 2. Interestingly, this result is robust even when separately considering the hosts of GRBs with optically bright afterglows and the hosts of dark GRBs, as the two subsamples share similar size distributions. At z &gt; 2, however, GRB hosts appear to have sizes and stellar mass surface densities more consistent with those characterizing the field galaxies. This may reveal an evolution with redshift of the bias between GRB hosts and the overall population of star-forming sources, although we cannot exclude that our result at z &gt; 2 is also affected by the prevalence of dark GRBs in our selection. Conclusions. In addition to a possible trend toward a low-metallicity environment, other environmental properties such as stellar density appear to play a role in the formation of long GRBs, at least up to z ∼ 2. This might suggest that GRBs require special environments to enhance their production.

Gamma-ray bursts as probes of high-redshift Lyman-αemitters and radiative transfer models

Aims.We present the updated census and statistics of Lyman-αemitting long gamma-ray burst host galaxies (LAE-LGRBs). We investigate the properties of a subsample of LAE-LGRBs and test the shell model that is commonly used to fit Lyman-α(Lyα) emission line spectra.Methods.We considered all LGRB host galaxies with relevant publicly available information. We defined a golden sample of four LAE-LGRBs (GRBs 011211, 021004, 060926, and 070110) with afterglow and host galaxy observations allowing us to constrain the shell modeling of the Lyαline.Results.The census results in 29 detected LAE-LGRBs. We present 5 new Lyαemission detections in host-galaxy spectra and the corresponding unpublished VLT/X-shooter data (GRBs 060926, 070110, 081121, 081222, and 100424A). From the comparison of the statistics and properties of LAE-LGRBs to those of LAE samples in the literature, we find evidence of Lyαsuppression in dusty systems. The fraction of LAE-LGRBs in the overall LGRB hosts is lower than that found for Lyman-break galaxy (LBG) samples at similar redshift range. This result can arise because the selection criteria of the parent samples are different and the spectral observations of LGRB samples are shallower than those of LBG. However, we find that LAE-LGRBs are representative of Lyαemission from the bulk of UV-selected galaxies atz ∼ 2. We find that the golden sample of LAE-LGRBs we studied consists of complex systems characterized by multiple emission blobs and by signs of possible galaxy interactions. The fitting procedure recovers the HIcolumn densities (NHI) measured from the afterglow spectra and the other properties described by the shell-model parameters in the two low-NHIcases, but it fails to do this in the other two cases with highNHI. The afterglows of most LGRBs and LAE-LGRBs show log(NHI/cm−2) &gt; 20.3, implying that statistically, the bulk of Lyαphotons that is expected to be produced by massive stars in the star-forming region hosting the GRB will be surrounded by these opaque lines of sight. We therefore interpret our results in the context of more sophisticated models and of different dominant Lyα-emitting regions. We also compare LAE-LGRBs to LAE Lyman continuum (LyC) leakers in the literature in terms of the properties that are identified as possible indirect indicators of LyC leakage. We find that only one LGRB (GRB 021004) would likely be a strong LyC leaker and discuss the validity of these indicators at high redshift. While our work shows that LGRBs are useful tools for probing LAEs and radiative transfer models, larger statistics are required to strengthen our findings.

Future Constraints on the Reionization History and the Ionizing Sources from Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglows

Abstract We forecast the reionization history constraints, inferred from Lyα damping wing absorption features, for a future sample of ∼20 z ≥ 6 gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows. We describe each afterglow spectrum by a three-parameter model. First, L characterizes the size of the ionized region (the “bubble size”) around a GRB host halo. Second, 〈x H i 〉 is the volume-averaged neutral fraction outside of the ionized bubble around the GRB, which is approximated as spatially uniform. Finally, N H i denotes the column density of a local damped Lyα absorber (DLA) associated with the GRB host galaxy. The size distribution of ionized regions is extracted from a numerical simulation of reionization and evolves strongly across the epoch of reionization (EoR). The model DLA column densities follow the empirical distribution determined from current GRB afterglow spectra. We use a Fisher matrix formalism to forecast the 〈x H i (z)〉 constraints that can be obtained from follow-up spectroscopy of afterglows with S/N = 20 per R = 3000 resolution element at the continuum. We find that the neutral fraction may be determined to better than 10%–15% (1σ) accuracy from this data across multiple independent redshift bins at z ∼ 6–10, spanning much of the EoR, although the precision degrades somewhat near the end of reionization. A more futuristic survey with 80 GRB afterglows at z ≥ 6 can improve the precision here by a factor of 2 and extend measurements out to z ∼ 14. We further discuss how these constraints may be combined with estimates of the escape fraction of ionizing photons derived from the DLA column density distribution toward GRBs extracted at slightly lower redshift, z ∼ 5. This combination will help in testing whether we have an accurate census of the sources that reionized the universe.

GRB host galaxies with strong H2 absorption: CO-dark molecular gas at the peak of cosmic star formation

ABSTRACT We present a pilot search of CO emission in three H2-absorbing, long-duration gamma-ray burst (GRB) host galaxies at z ∼ 2–3. We used the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to target the CO(3 − 2) emission line and report non-detections for all three hosts. These are used to place limits on the host molecular gas masses, assuming a metallicity-dependent CO-to-H2 conversion factor (αCO). We find, $M_{\rm mol} \lt 3.5\times 10^{10}\, M_{\odot }$ (GRB 080607), $M_{\rm mol} \lt 4.7\times 10^{11}\, M_{\odot }$ (GRB 120815A), and $M_{\rm mol} \lt 8.9\times 10^{11}\, M_{\odot }$ (GRB 181020A). The high limits on the molecular gas mass for the latter two cases are a consequence of their low stellar masses M⋆ ($M_\star \lesssim 10^{8}\, M_{\odot }$) and low gas-phase metallicities ($Z\sim 0.03\, Z_{\odot }$). The limit on the Mmol/M⋆ ratio derived for GRB 080607, however, is consistent with the average population of star-forming galaxies at similar redshifts and stellar masses. We discuss the broader implications for a metallicity-dependent CO-to-H2 conversion factor and demonstrate that the canonical Galactic αCO will severely underestimate the actual molecular gas mass for all galaxies at z &amp;gt; 1 with $M_\star \lt 10^{10}\, M_\odot$. To better quantify this we develop a simple approach to estimate the relevant αCO factor based only on the redshift and stellar mass of individual galaxies. The elevated conversion factors will make these galaxies appear CO-‘dark’ and difficult to detect in emission, as is the case for the majority of GRB hosts. GRB spectroscopy thus offers a complementary approach to identify low-metallicity, star-forming galaxies with abundant molecular gas reservoirs at high redshifts that are otherwise missed by current ALMA surveys.
