Discovery of Thionylimide, HNSO, in Space: The first N-, S-, and O-bearing Interstellar Molecule

We present the first detection in space of thionylimide (HNSO) toward the Galactic center molecular cloud G + 0.693-0.027, thanks to the superb sensitivity of an ultradeep molecular line survey carried out with the Yebes 40 m and IRAM 30 m telescopes. This molecule is the first species detected in the interstellar medium containing, simultaneously, N, S, and O. We have identified numerous K a = 0, 1, and 2 transitions belonging to HNSO covering from J up = 2 to J up =10, including several completely unblended features. We derive a molecular column density of N = (8 ± 1)×1013 cm−2, yielding a fractional abundance relative to H2 of ∼6 × 10−10, which is about ∼37 and ∼4.8 times less abundant than SO and SO2, respectively. Although there are still many unknowns in the interstellar chemistry of NSO-bearing molecules, we propose that HNSO is likely formed through the reaction of the NSO radical and atomic H on the surface of icy grains, with alternative routes also deserving exploration. Finally, HNSO appears as a promising link between N, S, and O interstellar chemistry, and its discovery paves the route to the detection of a new family of molecules in space.

Discovery of the Elusive Carbonic Acid (HOCOOH) in Space

A quarter century after the detection of the last interstellar carboxylic acid, acetic acid (CH3COOH), we report the discovery of a new one, the cis-trans form of carbonic acid (HOCOOH), toward the Galactic center molecular cloud G+0.693–0.027. HOCOOH stands as the first interstellar molecule containing three oxygen atoms and the third carboxylic acid detected so far in the interstellar medium. Albeit the limited available laboratory measurements (up to 65 GHz), we have also directly identified several pairs of unblended lines in the astronomical data (between 75 and 120 GHz), which allowed us to slightly improve the set of spectroscopic constants. We derive a column density for cis-trans HOCOOH of N = (6.4 ± 0.4) × 1012 cm−2, which yields an abundance with respect to molecular H2 of 4.7 × 10−11. Meanwhile, the extremely low dipole moment (about 15 times lower) of the lower-energy conformer, cis-cis HOCOOH, precludes its detection. We obtain an upper limit to its abundance with respect to H2 of ≤1.2 × 10−9, which suggests that cis-cis HOCOOH might be fairly abundant in interstellar space, although it is nearly undetectable by radio astronomical observations. We derive a cis-cis/cis-trans ratio of ≤25, consistent with the smaller energy difference between both conformers compared with the relative stability of trans- and cis-formic acid. Finally, we compare the abundance of these acids in different astronomical environments, further suggesting a relationship between the chemical content found in the interstellar medium and the chemical composition of the minor bodies of the solar system, which could be inherited during the star formation process.

Laboratory detection and astronomical study of interstellar acetohydroxamic acid, a glycine isomer

Aims. In this work, we aim to achieve the first laboratory detection of acetohydroxamic acid (CH3CONHOH), a relevant glycine isomer, to enable its eventual identification in the ISM. Methods. We employed a battery of state-of-the-art rotational spectroscopic techniques in the time domain to measure the microwave spectrum of acetohydroxamic acid. We then used the spectral GOTHAM survey performed with the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) to search for the lowest-energy Z-conformer toward the cold and quiescent molecular cloud TMC-1. We also employed a sensitive spectral survey of the chemically rich Galactic Center molecular cloud G+0.693-0.027, based on IRAM 30 m and Yebes 40 m observations. Results. We report direct experimental frequencies of the ground state of acetohydroxamic acid (up to 40 GHz). The 14N nuclear quadrupole hyperfine structure and the A-E splittings due to the internal rotation were observed and analyzed. Hence, a precise set of the rotational spectroscopic parameters were determined for the two distinct conformers, Z- and E-acetohydroxamic acid, which is the initial and prerequisite step of their radio astronomical search in the ISM using low-frequency surveys. We report the nondetection of acetohydroxamic acid toward both astronomical sources. We derive an upper limit to the column density of this molecule very similar to that obtained for glycine. Its corresponding molecular abundance with respect to molecular hydrogen is found to be ≤1 × 10−9 and 2 × 10−10 in TMC-1 and G+0.693-0.027, respectively, which further constrain the abundance of this glycine isomer in the ISM.

Hot molecular core candidates in the Galactic center 50 km s−1 molecular cloud

Abstract We present results based on ${2{^{\prime \prime}_{.}}5}$-resolution observations using the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillmeter Array (ALMA) of the Galactic center molecular cloud G−0.02−0.07, or the 50 km s−1 molecular cloud (50 MC), in the SO (NJ = 22–11) line and 86 GHz continuum emission, the combination of which is considered to trace “hot molecular core candidates” (HMCCs) appearing in the early stage of massive-star formation. In the 86 GHz continuum image, we identified nine dust cores in the central part of the 50 MC, in which four famous compact H ii regions are located. No new ultra-compact H ii regions were found. We also identified 28 HMCCs in the 50 MC with the SO line. The overall SO distribution had no clear positional correlation with the identified H ii regions. The HMCCs in the 50 MC showed a variety of association and non-association with dust and Class I CH3OH maser emissions. The variety suggests that they are not in a single evolutionary stage or environment. Nevertheless, the masses of the identified HMCCs were found to be well approximated by a single power law of their radii, MLTE/(M⊙) = 5.44 × 105 [r/(pc)]2.17 at Tex = 50–100 K. The derived HMCC masses were larger than those of the molecular cores with the same radii in the 50 MC, and also than those of the molecular clumps in the Galactic disk. Additional observations are needed to confirm the nature of these HMCCs in the 50 MC.

Cloud-cloud collision as drivers of the chemical complexity in Galactic Centre molecular clouds.

G+0.693-0.03 is a quiescent molecular cloud located within the Sagittarius B2 (Sgr B2) star-forming complex. Recent spectral surveys have shown that it represents one of the most prolific repositories of complex organic species in the Galaxy. The origin of such chemical complexity, along with the small-scale physical structure and properties of G+0.693-0.03, remains a mystery. In this paper, we report the study of multiple molecules with interferometric observations in combination with single-dish data in G+0.693-0.03. Despite the lack of detection of continuum source, we find small-scale (0.2 pc) structures within this cloud. The analysis of the molecular emission of typical shock tracers such as SiO, HNCO, and CH3OH unveiled two molecular components, peaking at velocities of 57 and 75 km s-1. They are found to be interconnected in both space and velocity. The position-velocity diagrams show features that match with the observational signatures of a cloud-cloud collision. Additionally, we detect three series of class I methanol masers known to appear in shocked gas, supporting the cloud-cloud collision scenario. From the maser emission we provide constraints on the gas kinetic temperatures (∼30-150 K) and H2 densities (104-105 cm-2). These properties are similar to those found for the starburst galaxy NGC253 also using class I methanol masers, suggested to be associated with a cloud-cloud collision. We conclude that shocks driven by the possible cloud-cloud collision is likely the most important mechanism responsible for the high level of chemical complexity observed in G+0.693-0.03.

The Galactic Center Molecular Cloud Survey

We present the first systematic study of the density structure of clouds found in a complete sample covering all major molecular clouds in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ; inner $\sim{}200~\rm{}pc$) of the Milky Way. This is made possible by using data from the Galactic Center Molecular Cloud Survey (GCMS), the first study resolving all major molecular clouds in the CMZ at interferometer angular resolution. We find that many CMZ molecular clouds have unusually shallow density gradients compared to regions elsewhere in the Milky Way. This is possibly a consequence of weak gravitational binding of the clouds. The resulting relative absence of dense gas on spatial scales $\sim{}0.1~\rm{}pc$ is probably one of the reasons why star formation (SF) in dense gas of the CMZ is suppressed by a factor $\sim{}10$, compared to solar neighborhood clouds. Another factor suppressing star formation are the high SF density thresholds that likely result from the observed gas kinematics. Further, it is possible but not certain that the star formation activity and the cloud density structure evolve systematically as clouds orbit the CMZ.

HARD X-RAY MORPHOLOGICAL AND SPECTRAL STUDIES OF THE GALACTIC CENTER MOLECULAR CLOUD SGR B2: CONSTRAINING PAST SGR A⋆ FLARING ACTIVITY

Galactic Center (GC) molecular cloud Sgr B2 is the best manifestation of an X-ray reflection nebula (XRN) reprocessing a past giant outburst from the supermassive black hole Sgr A*. Alternatively, Sgr B2 could be illuminated by low-energy cosmic ray electrons (LECRe) or protons (LECRp). In 2013, NuSTAR for the first time resolved Sgr B2 hard X-ray emission on sub-arcminute scales. Two prominent features are detected above 10 keV - a newly emerging cloud G0.66-0.13 and the central 90" radius region containing two compact cores Sgr B2(M) and Sgr B2(N) surrounded by diffuse emission. It is inconclusive whether the remaining level of Sgr B2 emission is still decreasing or has reached a constant background level. A decreasing Fe K$\alpha$ emission can be best explained by XRN while a constant background emission can be best explained by LECRp. In the XRN scenario, the 3-79 keV Sgr B2 spectrum can well constrain the past Sgr A* outburst, resulting in an outburst spectrum with a peak luminosity of $L_{3-79\rm~keV} \sim 5\times10^{38} \rm~erg~s^{-1}$ derived from the maximum Compton-scattered continuum and the Fe K$\alpha$ emission consistently. The XRN scenario is preferred by the fast variability of G0.66-0.13, which could be a molecular clump located in the Sgr B2 envelope reflecting the same Sgr A* outburst. In the LECRp scenario, we derived the required CR ion power $dW/dt=(1-4)\times10^{39}\rm~erg~s^{-1}$ and the CR ionization rate $\zeta_{H}=(6-10)\times 10^{-15}\rm~H^{-1}~s^{-1}$. The Sgr B2 background level X-ray emission will be a powerful tool to constrain GC CR population.

TheXMM–Newtonview of the central degrees of the Milky Way

The deepest XMM–Newton mosaic map of the central 1| $_{.}^{\circ}$|5 of the Galaxy is presented, including a total of about 1.5 Ms of EPIC-pn cleaned exposures in the central 15 arcsec and about 200 ks outside. This compendium presents broad-band X-ray continuum maps, soft X-ray intensity maps, a decomposition into spectral components and a comparison of the X-ray maps with emission at other wavelengths. Newly discovered extended features, such as supernova remnants (SNRs), superbubbles and X-ray filaments are reported. We provide an atlas of extended features within ±1° of Sgr A⋆. We discover the presence of a coherent X-ray-emitting region peaking around G0.1−0.1 and surrounded by the ring of cold, mid-IR-emitting material known from previous work as the ‘Radio Arc Bubble’ and with the addition of the X-ray data now appears to be a candidate superbubble. Sgr A's bipolar lobes show sharp edges, suggesting that they could be the remnant, collimated by the circumnuclear disc, of an SN explosion that created the recently discovered magnetar, SGR J1745−2900. Soft X-ray features, most probably from SNRs, are observed to fill holes in the dust distribution, and to indicate a direct interaction between SN explosions and Galactic centre (GC) molecular clouds. We also discover warm plasma at high Galactic latitude, showing a sharp edge to its distribution that correlates with the location of known radio/mid-IR features such as the ‘GC Lobe’. These features might be associated with an inhomogeneous hot ‘atmosphere’ over the GC, perhaps fed by continuous or episodic outflows of mass and energy from the GC region.

Diffusion of cosmic-ray electrons in the Galactic centre molecular cloud G0.13–0.13

AbstractThe Galactic center (GC) molecular cloud G0.13–0.13 exhibits a shell morphology in CS J = (1 − 0), with ∼ 105 solar masses and expansion speed ∼ 20 km s−1, yielding a total kinetic energy ∼ 1051 erg. Its morphology is also suggestive of an interaction with the nonthermal filaments of the GC arc. 74 MHz emission indicates the presence of a substantial population of low energy electrons permeating the cloud, which could either be produced by the interaction with the arc or accelerated in the shock waves responsible for the cloud's expansion. These scenarios are explored using time dependent diffusion models.With these diffusion models, we determine the penetration of low-energy cosmic-ray electrons accelerated into G0.13–0.13 and calculate the spatial distribution of the cosmic-ray ionization and heating rates. We show that the 6.4 keV Fe Kα line emission associated with the electron population provides an observational diagnostic to distinguish these two acceleration scenarios.We discuss the implications of our results for understanding the distinct character of clouds in the central molecular zone compared to clouds in the Galactic disk, and how GC nonthermal filaments interact with molecular clouds.

A radio survey of Galactic center clouds

AbstractWe present a radio survey of molecules in a sample of Galactic center molecular clouds, including M0.25 + 0.01, the clouds near Sgr A, and Sgr B2. The molecules detected are primarily NH3 and HC3N; in Sgr B2-N we also detect non-metastable NH3, vibrationally-excited HC3N, torsionally-excited CH3OH, and numerous isotopologues of these species. 36 GHz Class I CH3OH masers are ubiquitous in these fields, and in several cases are associated with new NH3 (3,3) maser candidates. We also find that NH3 and HC3N are depleted or absent toward several of the highest dust column density peaks identified in submillimeter observations, which are associated with water masers and are thus likely in the early stages of star formation.

DETECTION OF WIDESPREAD HOT AMMONIA IN THE GALACTIC CENTER

We present the detection of metastable inversion lines of ammonia from energy levels high above the ground state. We detect these lines in both emission and absorption toward fifteen of seventeen positions in the central 300 parsecs of the Galaxy. In total, we observe seven metastable transitions of ammonia: (8,8), (9,9), (10,10), (11,11), (12,12), (13,13) and (15,15), with energies (in Kelvins) ranging from 680 to 2200 K. We also map emission from ammonia (8,8) and (9,9) in two clouds in the Sgr A complex (M-0.02-0.07 and M-0.13-0.08), and we find that the line emission is concentrated toward the the dense centers of these molecular clouds. The rotational temperatures derived from the metastable lines toward M-0.02-0.07 and M-0.13-0.08 and an additional cloud (M0.25+0.01) range from 350 to 450 K. Similarly highly-excited lines of ammonia have previously been observed toward Sgr B2, where gas with kinetic temperatures of ~600 K has been inferred. Our observations show that the existence of a hot molecular gas component is not unique to Sgr B2, but rather appears common to many Galactic center molecular clouds. In M-0.02-0.07, we find that the hot ammonia, contributes ~10% of the cloud's total ammonia column density, and further, that the hot ammonia in this cloud arises in gas which is extended or uniformly distributed on ~10 arcsecond scales. We discuss the implications of these constraints upon the nature of this hot gas component. In addition to the detection of hot metastable ammonia line emission, we also detect for the first time emission from nonmetastable inversion transitions of ammonia in both M-0.02-0.07 and M-0.13-0.08.

74 MHz Nonthermal Emission from Molecular Clouds: Evidence for a Cosmic Ray Dominated Region at the Galactic Center

We present 74 MHz radio continuum observations of the Galactic center region. These measurements show nonthermal radio emission arising from molecular clouds that is unaffected by free–free absorption along the line of sight. We focus on one cloud, G0.13-0.13, representative of the population of molecular clouds that are spatially correlated with steep spectrum (α(327MHz)(74MHz) = 1.3 ± 0.3) nonthermal emission from the Galactic center region. This cloud lies adjacent to the nonthermal radio filaments of the Arc near l 0.2° and is a strong source of 74 MHz continuum, SiO (2-1), and Fe I Kα 6.4 keV line emission. This three-way correlation provides the most compelling evidence yet that relativistic electrons, here traced by 74 MHz emission, are physically associated with the G0.13-0.13 molecular cloud and that low-energy cosmic ray electrons are responsible for the Fe I Kα line emission. The high cosmic ray ionization rate 10(–1)3 s(–1) H(–1) is responsible for heating the molecular gas to high temperatures and allows the disturbed gas to maintain a high-velocity dispersion. Large velocity gradient (LVG) modeling of multitransition SiO observations of this cloud implies H2 densities 10(4–5) cm(–3) and high temperatures. The lower limit to the temperature of G0.13-0.13 is 100 K, whereas the upper limit is as high as 1000 K. Lastly, we used a time-dependent chemical model in which cosmic rays drive the chemistry of the gas to investigate for molecular line diagnostics of cosmic ray heating. When the cloud reaches chemical equilibrium, the abundance ratios of HCN/HNC and N2H+/HCO+ are consistent with measured values. In addition, significant abundance of SiO is predicted in the cosmic ray dominated region of the Galactic center. We discuss different possibilities to account for the origin of widespread SiO emission detected from Galactic center molecular clouds.

INTERACTING COSMIC RAYS WITH MOLECULAR CLOUDS: A BREMSSTRAHLUNG ORIGIN OF DIFFUSE HIGH-ENERGY EMISSION FROM THE INNER 2°×1° OF THE GALACTIC CENTER

The high energy activity in the inner few degrees of the Galactic center is traced by diffuse radio, X-ray and gamma-ray emission. The physical relationship between different components of diffuse gas emitting at multiple wavelengths is a focus of this work. We first present radio continuum observations using Green Bank Telescope and model the nonthermal spectrum in terms of a broken power-law distribution of GeV electrons emitting synchrotron radiation. We show that the emission detected by Fermi is primarily due to nonthermal bremsstrahlung produced by the population of synchrotron emitting electrons in the GeV energy range interacting with neutral gas. The extrapolation of the electron population measured from radio data to low and high energies can also explain the origin of FeI 6.4 keV line and diffuse TeV emission, as observed with Suzaku, XMM-Newton, Chandra and the H.E.S.S. observatories. The inferred physical quantities from modeling multi-wavelength emission in the context of bremsstrahlung emission from the inner 300x120 parsecs of the Galactic center are constrained to have the cosmic ray ionization rate 1-10x10^{-15} s^-1, molecular gas heating rate elevating the gas temperature to 75-200K, fractional ionization of molecular gas 10^{-6} to 10^{-5}, large scale magnetic field 10-20 micro Gauss, the density of diffuse and dense molecular gas 100 and 10^3 cm^{-3} over 300pc and 50pc pathlengths, and the variability of FeI Kalpha 6.4 keV line emission on yearly time scales. Important implications of our study are that GeV electrons emitting in radio can explain the GeV gamma-rays detected by Fermi and that the cosmic ray irradiation model, like the model of the X-ray irradiation triggered by past activity of Sgr A*, can also explain the origin of the variable 6.4 keV emission from Galactic center molecular clouds.

The X-ray lightcurve of Sagittarius A* over the past 150 years inferred from Fe-Kαline reverberation in Galactic centre molecular clouds

We examine the temporal and spectral properties of nine Fe-Ka bright molecular clouds within about 30 pc of Sgr A*, in order to understand and constrain the primary energising source of the Fe fluorescence. Significant Fe-Ka variability was detected, with a spatial and temporal pattern consistent with that reported in previous studies. The main breakthrough that sets our paper apart from earlier contributions on this topic is the direct measurement of the column density and the Fe abundance of the MCs in our sample. We used the EW measurements to infer the average Fe abundance within the clouds to be 1.6$\pm$0.1 times solar. The cloud column densities derived from the spectral analysis were typically of the order of 10$^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$, which is significantly higher than previous estimates. This in turn has a significant impact on the inferred geometry and time delays within the cloud system. Past X-ray activity of Sgr A* is the most likely source of ionisation within the molecular clouds in the innermost 30 pc of the Galaxy. In this scenario, the X-ray luminosity required to excite these reflection nebulae is of the order of 10$^{37}-10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$, significantly lower than that estimated for the Sgr B2 molecular cloud. Moreover, the inferred Sgr A* lightcurve over the past 150 years shows a long-term downwards trend punctuated by occasional counter-trend brightening episodes of at least 5 years duration. Finally, we found that contributions to the Fe fluorescence by X-ray transient binaries and cosmic-ray bombardment are very likely, and suggest possible ways to study this latter phenomenon in the near future.

Tracing gas accretion in the Galactic center using isotopic ratios

Ams: We study the 12C/13C isotopic ratio in the disk of the central molecular zone and in the halo to trace gas accretion toward the Galactic center region in the Milky Way. Methods: Using the IRAM 30m telescope, we observe the J=1-0 rotational transition of HCO+, HCN, HNC and their 13C isotopic substitutions in order to measure the 12C/13C isotopic ratio. We observe 9 positions selected throughout the Galactic center region, including clouds at high latitude; locations where the X1 and X2 orbits associated with the barred potential are expected to intersect; and typical Galactic center molecular clouds. Results: We find a systematically higher 12C/13C isotopic ratio (>40) toward the halo and the X1 orbits than for the Galactic center molecular clouds (20-25). Our results point out to molecular gas which has undergone a different degree of nuclear processing than that observed in the gas towards the inner Galactic center region. Conclusions: The high isotopic ratios are consistent with the accretion of the gas from the halo and from the outskirts of the Galactic disk.

DISCOVERY OF A SUPERLUMINAL Fe K ECHO AT THE GALACTIC CENTER: THE GLORIOUS PAST OF Sgr A* PRESERVED BY MOLECULAR CLOUDS

We present the result of a study of the X-ray emission from the Galactic Centre (GC) Molecular Clouds (MC) within 15 arcmin from Sgr A*. We use XMM-Newton data (about 1.2 Ms of observation time) spanning about 8 years. The MC spectra show all the features characteristic of reflection: i) intense Fe Kalpha, with EW of about 0.7-1 keV, and the associated Kbeta line; ii) flat power law continuum and iii) a significant Fe K edge (tau~0.1-0.3). The diffuse low ionisation Fe K emission follows the MC distribution, nevertheless not all MC are Fe K emitters. The long baseline monitoring allows the characterisation of the temporal evolution of the MC emission. A complex pattern of variations is shown by the different MC, with some having constant Fe K emission, some increasing and some decreasing. In particular, we observe an apparent super-luminal motion of a light front illuminating a Molecular nebula. This might be due to a source outside the MC (such as Sgr A* or a bright and long outburst of a X-ray binary), while it cannot be due to low energy cosmic rays or a source located inside the cloud. We also observe a decrease of the X-ray emission from G0.11-0.11, behaviour similar to the one of Sgr B2. The line intensities, clouds dimensions, columns densities and positions with respect to Sgr A*, are consistent with being produced by the same Sgr A* flare. The required high luminosity (about 1.5~10^39 erg/s) can hardly be produced by a binary system, while it is in agreement with a flare of Sgr A* fading about 100 years ago. The low intensity of the Fe K emission coming from the 50 and the 20 km/s MC places an upper limit of 10^36 erg/s to the mean luminosity of Sgr A* in the last 60-90 years. The Fe K emission and variations from these MC might have been produced by a single flare of Sgr A*.

Similarity between the Molecular Loops in the Galactic Center and the Solar Chromospheric Arch Filaments

Abstract We carried out two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the Galactic gas disk to show that the dense loop-like structures discovered by the Galactic center molecular cloud survey using the NANTEN 4-m telescope can be formed by a buoyant rise of magnetic loops due to the Parker instability. At the initial state, we assumed a gravitationally stratified disk consisting of a cool layer ($T$$\sim$ 10$^{3} $K), a warm layer ($T$$\sim$ 10$^{4} $K), and a hot layer ($T$$\sim$ 10$^{5} $K). The simulation box was a local part of the disk containing the equatorial plane. The gravitational field was approximated by that of a point mass at the Galactic center. The self-gravity, and the effects of the Galactic rotation were ignored. Numerical results indicate that the length of the magnetic loops emerging from the disk is determined by the scale height of the hot layer ($\sim$ 100 pc at 1 kpc from the Galactic center). The loop length, velocity gradient along the loops, and large velocity dispersions at their foot points are consistent with the NANTEN observations. We also show that the loops become top-heavy when the curvature of the loop is sufficiently small, so that the rising loop accumulates the overlying gas faster than sliding it down along the loop. This mechanism is similar to that in the formation of solar chromospheric arch filaments. The molecular loops emerge from the low-temperature layer just like the dark filaments observed in the H$\alpha$ image of the emerging flux region of the Sun.

Star Formation at the Galactic Center

ABSTRACTMolecular clouds at the Galactic center (GC) have environments considerably different from their disk counterparts. The GC may therefore provide important clues about how the environment affects star formation. Interestingly, while the inner 50 pc of our Galaxy include a remarkable population of high-mass stars, the initial mass function (IMF) appears to be consistent with a Salpeter slope down to ∼1 M⊙. We show here that the loss of turbulent pressure due to ambipolar diffusion and the damping of Alfvén and fast MHD waves can lead to the formation of dense condensations exceeding their Jeans limit. The fragmentation and subsequent collapse of these condensations is similar to the diffusion-driven protostellar collapse mechanism expected to occur within nearby “regular” molecular clouds. As such, a Salpeter IMF at the GC is not surprising, though the short dynamical timescales associated with the GC molecular clouds may help explain the lower star formation efficiency observed from this region.

The Origin of Diffuse X‐Ray and γ‐Ray Emission from the Galactic Center Region: Cosmic‐Ray Particles

The inner couple of hundred parsecs of our Galaxy are characterized by a significant amount of synchrotron-emitting gas. Many of best studied sources in this region exhibit a mixture of 6.4 keV Fe Kα emission, molecular line emission, and nonthermal radio continuum radiation. The spatial correlation between fluorescent Fe Kα line emission at 6.4 keV and molecular line emission from Galactic center molecular clouds has been explained as reflected X-rays from a past outburst of Sgr A*. Here we present a multiwavelength study of this region and find a correlation between nonthermal radio filaments and X-ray features. This correlation, when combined with distribution of molecular gas, suggests against irradiation model. Instead, we account for this distribution in terms of impact of relativistic particles from local (nonthermal filaments) and extended sources with diffuse neutral gas producing both nonthermal bremsstrahlung X-ray continuum emission and diffuse 6.4 keV line emission. The production rate of Fe Kα photons associated with injection of electrons into a cloud as a function of column density is calculated. The required energy density of low-energy cosmic rays associated with synchrotron-emitting radio filaments or extended features is estimated to be in range between 20 and ~103 eV cm-3 for Sgr C, Sgr B1, Sgr B2, and the 45 and -30 km s-1 clouds. We also generalize this idea to explain cosmic-ray heating of molecular gas, interstellar cosmic-ray ionization, pervasive production of diffuse Kα line, and TeV emission from Galactic center molecular clouds. In particular, we suggest that inverse Compton scattering of submillimeter radiation from dust by relativistic electrons may contribute substantially to large-scale diffuse TeV emission observed toward central regions of Galaxy.

A 2 Millimeter Spectral Line Survey of the Starburst Galaxy NGC 253

We present the first unbiased molecular line survey toward an extragalactic source, namely the nuclear region of the starburst galaxy NGC 253. The scan covers the frequency band from 129.1 to 175.2 GHz, i.e., most of the 2 mm atmospheric window. We identify 111 spectral features as transitions from 25 different molecular species. Eight of which (three tentatively) are detected for the first time in the extragalactic interstellar medium. Among these newly detected species, we detected the rare isotopomers 34SO and HC18O+. Tentative detections of two deuterated species, DNC and N2D+, are reported for the first time from a target beyond the Magellanic Clouds. In addition, three hydrogen recombination lines are identified, while no organic molecules larger than methanol are detected. Column densities and rotation temperatures are calculated for all the species, including an upper limit to the ethanol abundance. A comparison of the chemical composition of the nuclear environment of NGC 253 with those of selected nearby galaxies demonstrates the chemical resemblance of IC 342 and NGC 4945 to that of NGC 253. On the other hand, the chemistries characterizing NGC 253 and M82 are clearly different. We also present a comparison of the chemical composition of NGC 253 with those observed in Galactic prototypical sources. The chemistry of NGC 253 shows a striking similarity with the chemistry observed toward the Galactic center molecular clouds, which are thought to be dominated by low-velocity shocks. This resemblance strongly suggests that the heating in the nuclear environment of NGC 253 is dominated by the same mechanism as that in the central region of the Milky Way.
