A thick target of natural cadmium metal has been bombarded with 9–10 MeV 4He, 38–40 MeV 16O, 64 MeV 32S and 101 MeV 40Ar ions. Relative γ-ray intensities from the decay of the Coulomb excited first 2 + state in all six natural even-mass cadmium isotopes have been measured. (The γ-rays from isotopes 106 and 108 could not be resolved.) For each isotope the relative γ-ray intensities for the different projectiles have been compared with those for 114Cd and the deviations have been interpreted in terms of the reorientation effect. This determines the difference in the static quadrupole moments of the 2 + state in 114Cd and the other isotopes. Assuming a value of Q 2+ = −0.38 b for 114Cd, the values for the other isotopes are given in barns following the mass number of each isotope; 106 and 108: −0.84±0.28; 110: −0.24±0.09; 112: −0.15±0.07; 116: −0.88±0.25.
