A CDMA-based radio interface for third generation mobile systems

This paper deals with the use of a CDMA-based radio interface in third generation mobile systems (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System—UMTS, and Future Public Land Mobile Telecommunications System—FPLMTS). The paper is not intended as a detailed analysis of the radio interface performance, but as an overview of the main issues arising in a typical CDMA-based mobile system, discussing the different available technical solutions. First of all, the basic requirements of the radio interface in a third generation mobile system are outlined. In particular, the support of variable bit rate transmission, the adaptability to the different propagation and service environments and the flexibility are felt to be important topics to be discussed. Then, the main characteristics of the CDMA access technique are depicted, in relation with the above mentioned requirements, focusing in particular on the DS-CDMA radio interface designed within the RACE II—CODIT Project. In that context the paper describes some of the technical solutions proposed for the provision of advanced features such as macrodiversity, multibearer transmission and variable bit rate services.

Taking the challenge of multiple access for third-generation cellular mobile radio systems-a European view

In Europe, the challenge of the design of third-generation cellular mobile radio systems has been taken numerous research and development activities in this field have been started. The authors try to give an overview of the European activities in this field. The article is organized in two parts. In the first part, the requirements for third-generation cellular mobile radio systems such as Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) and Future Public Land Mobile Telecommunications System (FPLMTS), which has been named International Mobile Telecommunications after the year 2000 (IMT-2000) are presented concisely. Also, the importance and challenge of the multiple access design for such third-generation cellular mobile radio systems is explained. In the second part, numerous European research activities with focus on the multiple access design for third-generation cellular mobile radio systems are reviewed.

Trends in the standardization of telecommunications on GII, multimedia, and other network technologies and services

Global standardization is becoming more and more important in achieving a global information infrastructure (GII). Telecommunication and information standardization organizations such as the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and International Organization for Standardization/International Electrotechnical Commission (ISO/IEC) Joint Technical Committee (JTC) have each set up special groups to focus on determining standards for GII. This article presents the activities of these organizations as they relate to GII. It also reviews the current status of standards for multimedia, asynchronous transfer mode (ATM)/broadband integrated services digital network (B-ISDN), Universal Personal Telecommunications (UPT), Future Public Land Mobile Telecommunication System (FPLMTS), and telecommunications management network (TMN), which are all key elements in GII.

Testbeds for assessing the performance of a TDMA-based radio access design for UMTS

With the successful introduction of GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) networks in many countries, attention is now turning to the development of the next, or third, generation of mobile cellular systems. The requirements for these systems are expressed in the ITU concept of FPLMTS (Future Public Land Mobile Telecommunication Systems), and the parallel ETSI concept of UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System). Key elements in the definition of third generation systems are the radio access system and the subtending radio transmission technology. A procedure for evaluating the relative merit of radio transmission technologies is being developed as one of the instruments for identifying the radio access system(s) to be standardised. The evaluation phase will typically be performed by exercising testbeds related to the radio access proposals. A TDMA-based radio access design for UMTS has been introduced. This design bases on a new functional model for relating transport and control functions and has been developed in the framework of the European RACE Advanced TDMA Mobile Access (ATDMA) project. The performance of the ATDMA design is being assessed through a complex testbed activity aimed at: (1) proving the viability and the effective interworking of a range of radio techniques; and (2) estimating the traffic capacity of the design. >

Standardization of network technologies and services

Asatani (1994) reported on a variety of topics, including broadband aspects of ISDN (B-ISDN), intelligent network (IN), future public land mobile telecommunication systems (FPLMTS), and audiovisual multimedia services (AVMMS). With the exception of IN, the present report covers progress in those same areas, with a status report on telecommunication management network (TMN) and universal personal telecommunications (UPT). A European view on the transition path toward advanced mobile systems

The article gives a view on the evolution of personal communications toward a next-generation global system, or family of systems, based on the concepts of universal mobile telecommunication system (UMTS)in Europe and the future public land mobile telecommunications systems (FPLMTS) within the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). Based on the experience acquired in developing GSM, the digital cellular system standardized in Europe in the late '80s, it focuses on a possible evolutionary path which would provide a smooth transition from GSM to FPLMTS. Sharing issues between FPLMTS and fixed services

Any sharing between future public land mobile telecommunication systems (FPLMTS) and fixed services must be on the basis of maintaining high reliability and performance for both services. The focus of this article is to examine the following. Can mobile and fixed systems share the same frequency band? How much unwanted signal power is received by each system from the other? How does the unwanted signal power vary as mobile users roam in an area covered by the main-beam and the sidelobes of the fixed service? What effects do the parameters of FPLMTS (transmitter power, bandwidth, etc.) and the parameters of the fixed service (antenna directivity, power, bandwidth, etc.) have on the unwanted signal power levels? How is the unwanted power level affected by the path geometry, in particular fixed service antenna height and propagation conditions (congested areas) between the mobile and fixed stations?.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">&gt;</ETX>

Future public land mobile telecommunication systems.

In March 1992, the World Administrative Radio Conference (WARC) of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), identified global bands 1885-2025 and 2110-2200 MHz for future public land mobile telecommunication systems (FPLMTSs), including 1980-2010 and 2170-2200 MHz for the mobile satellite component. The potential for all FPLMTS radio interfaces to be in the same band provides a strong incentive for trying to maximize the commonality between the satellite and terrestrial component of FPLMTSs. This would simplify multimode mobile equipment and also greatly increase the utility of FPLMTSs for the provision of basic telecommunication needs in underdeveloped regions of the world. Extension of integrated voice, video and data telecommunications to a person rather than a place will have a dramatic effect on everyday life, and on the organizations which currently provide these services. The author outlines some of the international standards work in this area being carried out by the International Radio Consultative Committee/International Telegraph and Telephone Consultative Committee (CCIR/CCITT), in particular that of CCIR TG8/1 (formerly IWP8/13) on FPLMTS.

Architecture and networking issues in satellite systems for personal communications

AbstractThe paper expands on some specific aspects of personal communications via satellite, often–although not necessarily–envisaging extensive use of ‘small’ satellites, using orbits not necessarily coinciding with the geostationary one (36,000 km), but rather at 1000–11,000 km altitude. One key point to be borne in mind is the issue of internetworking between satellite and terrestrial systems. Network integration should be carefully implemented in order to comply with ITU future public land mobile telecommunication systems (FPLMTS) requirements, also accepted in the European Telecommunication Standards Institute (ETSI) universal mobile telecommunication systems (UMTS). In addition to some insight into the technology of small satellites and associated orbits, architectures and networking aspects of most relevant systems providing personal communication services (PCS) are addressed in some detail, and potential applications highlighted. Frequency spectrum allocation is addressed in the light of the 1992 World Administrative Radio Conference (WARC‐92), taking into account also multiple access problems and regulatory issues such as Federal Communications Commission (FCC) licensing and spectrum sharing debates. Some remarks on critical technologies and cost conclude the paper.

Overview of GSM: Philosophy and results

The work on GSM, a standardized European second-generation cellular system, was started in 1982 in order to prevent the fragmentation of the first-generation cellular market from continuing into the second generation. The goal was to define a system with open interfaces for Pan-European use that would offer the best compromise between a number of conflicting requirements, such as spectrum economy, high speech quality, low cost, and a large range of services. A broad outline of the novel features is presented, both concerning the architecture of the system and of the services offered, as well as the reasoning behind the more important choices. Finally, some views are presented concerning the future development of GSM and of the third-generation system, the co-called Future Public Land Mobile Telecommunication System, commonly referred to as FPLMTS.

Cordless personal communications

The role of digital cordless technology in the transition to personal communication systems (PCSs) is discussed. The evolution of the pan-European digital cordless standards-CT2 and DECT-and industry progress in equipment availability and service implementation are reviewed. The application of cordless access to the domestic market in the United Kingdom and European telepoint, wireless PABXs, and radio drops are described. CT2 product development and availability and cordless data applications are outlined. The migration of microcellular cordless techniques for wider area systems including ETSI's universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) and the future public land mobile telecommunications systems (FPLMTS), now under development by CCIR with assistance from CCITT, are also discussed.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">&gt;</ETX>

How WARC '92 will affect mobile services

The US proposals to, and the decisions of, the 1992 World Administrative Radio Conference (WARC '92) that relate to mobile and mobile-satellite services are described. Mobile-satellite service (MSS) issues addressed at WARC '92 include new allocations for low Earth-orbit (LEO) satellite operations, new MSS spectrum allocations, and modifications to current allocations used to support mobile-satellite operations. Allocation issues on the agenda of WARC '92 that related to the terrestrial mobile services include allocations for mobile services between 1 and 3 GHz, allocations for aeronautical public correspondence, and designation of frequency bands for future public land mobile telecommunications services. A number of proposals which were put forward by the US to support MSS allocations and operations that did not explicitly require allocations to the MSS are discussed. >
