The impact of future orientation and social support on career adaptability

Career adaptability is a crucial aspect for students, particularly those in urban settings, in their career development. Future orientation and social support are known to predict career adaptability. The study explores the impact of future orientation and social support on students' career adaptability. This study involved 300 participants aged 17-24. Utilizing validated scales, including the Career Adapt-Abilities Scale, Future Orientation Scale, and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, the research employed multiple regression analysis for data analysis. Results indicate that both future orientation and social support significantly influence career adaptability. Future orientation partially affects adaptability, while social support does not have a partial effect. The findings underscore the importance of future orientation and social support in fostering career adaptability among students. This study offers valuable insights into the factors contributing to students' readiness to navigate challenges in the workplace, shedding light on areas for further exploration in career development research.

The negative association of low subjective socioeconomic status with future orientation: the protective role of low fatalism.

Subjective socioeconomic status (SES), an individual's beliefs about his or her social class, is anticipated to be related to future orientation. This study proposed a moderation model to examine the relationship between subjective SES on future orientation and the protective role of low fatalism. Two studies were conducted to test the proposed model. Specifically, in Study 1, the structured questionnaires were administered to a sample comprising 217 Chinese participants (192 females, Mage = 18.24 ± 0.63). In Study 2, the structured questionnaires and an Imaginative Scenario Test were administered to collect data among 244 Chinese participants (167 females, Mage = 18.44 ± 0.73). Regression analyses were used to explore the moderating role of fatalism in the association between subjective SES on future orientation. The Bootstrap methods were used to test the significance of these moderating effects. The results revealed two primary findings: (1) Fatalism moderated the pathway from subjective SES to future orientation. Specifically, low fatalism served as a protective factor, making low subjective SES less disruptive to their future orientation. (2) The moderating effect was primarily attributed to the "luck dimension", which was the belief that luck plays a pivotal role in determining one's fate. The findings contribute to enriching the current understanding of the subjective SES on future orientation and the protective role of low fatalism.

Matching Is Best: Enhancing Effects of Future Orientation and Construal Level on Green Consumption

The 2024 Report on the Work of the Chinese Government promotes trade in consumer goods and green consumption. Therefore, better understanding is needed of consumer attitudes and behaviors toward environmental protection and sustainable development. The relationships among future orientation, construal level, and green consumption were explored using a delayed-effect design to conduct two surveys at one-month intervals with 160 participants (100 women and 60 men). The results showed that (1) future orientation positively predicted green consumption intention and green consumption behavior, and (2) the construal level significantly moderated the influence of future orientation on green consumption. Specifically, a high construal level and high future orientation predicted the greatest green consumption intention, green consumption behavior, and green consumption decisions, while at a high construal level, future orientation positively predicted green consumption intention and behavior, with a greater tendency to purchase environmentally friendly rather than hedonic products. At a low construal level, future orientation had no significant effect on green consumption intention, behavior, and intention to purchase environmentally friendly products. This study is important for promoting public awareness of the importance of green consumption and encouraging green consumption behaviors to achieve the goals of sustainable development and protect the environment and social well-being.

A timespace of zero‐COVID in Southwest China: Building community, governing time

AbstractIn this article, I take the organization of universal COVID testing as a point of departure for understanding the lived experiences of China's zero‐COVID policy and look at “the Community” (shequ) as a dynamic interface between the state and urban residents during the liminal time of a global pandemic. Drawing on Bryant and Knight's notion of “vernacular timespace” (2019), I analyze the timespace of zero‐COVID as a state‐regulated future orientation interwoven with collective anticipation of crisis, bureaucratic temporal governance, and contestations over time as a form of agency in everyday life. Instead of assuming a unitary form of present‐future relationship that was homogeneous and unchallenged, I argue that the collective anticipation of a public health crisis was constantly shaped, managed, and contested throughout the processes of pandemic community building. This research hopes to enrich reflections on the interplays of time, power, and legitimacy in post‐pandemic urban governance.

Development and Validation of Sensitivity for Needs of Elderly Scale Among Caregivers Based on Maslow’s Theory

The world currently lives in an aging society. Demand for elderly caregivers and services is rapidly rising. Elderly care encompasses not only medical care, but also the art of human care. Love and respect are usually considered the backbone of the modality of caregivers. This study aimed at developing a sensitivity for needs of elderly scale (SNES) among caregivers. Maslow’s theory of hierarchical needs, especially stage 3 (love and belongingness needs) and stage 4 (esteem needs), was used as a conceptual framework. This study consisted of four steps. The sample groups for the first two steps of item quality and exploratory factory analysis were 420 nursing students. A three-factor model emerged, which includes the sensitivity of needs for love and empathy, the sensitivity of needs for respect, and the sensitivity of needs for honor and dignity. The newly constructed measure consisted of 10 items, which explained the variance by 52.18%. The third step of confirmatory factor analysis, using a new group of 384 nursing students, indicated the model fit. In the final step, the scale was validated using 171 elderly caregivers. Moderate to strong absolute magnitudes of correlations between the new scale and psycho-moral strength, core self-evaluation, future orientation and self-control, moral disengagement, and caring behavior were found. Incremental validity was tested. Discussion and recommendations for further research and implications of the newly constructed measure were offered.

Mapping the Landscape of Team Roles: A Cluster Analysis of Key Authors

This paper is a continuation of the presentation of results from a systematic literature review aimed at identifying key authors in the field of team roles and grouping them into clusters of interconnected authors. It aims to define clusters of authors focusing on team roles. The results of this work can serve to facilitate future researchers' orientation to the different typologies of team roles. The defined clusters can also be used by practitioners in the field due to the clarity of studies describing team roles. The methodology utilized in this study involved a systematic literature review followed by an analysis of author relationships through systematic literature mapping. As described by Soaita et al (2020), systematic literature mapping is considered a valuable tool for comprehensively understanding the structure of a specific topic. Following the guidelines proposed by Kuckartz and Rädiker (2019) for conducting a literature review based on literature search, we proceeded through the described phases. The obtained results have brought about surprising insights, particularly the strongly developed cluster around J. E. Mathieu. The cluster centred around S. K. Parker is also interesting in terms of its gradual linking pattern, where authors build upon each other's work gradually. The presented results serve as an initial exploratory input for further research on theories, concepts and models of typologies and taxonomies. Anatolia – unveiling its multidisciplinary landscape and future orientations

ABSTRACT Using methods such as Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) and content analysis, this paper does a comprehensive analysis of Anatolia‘s contributions to tourism and hospitality research over the last 27 years, analyzing publishing trends, regional distribution, and topic evolution. The results show a significant increase in worldwide contributions, covering 92 nations, and an interdisciplinary strategy in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goal (UNSDG) 11. Important subject clusters are identified by the study, underscoring the journal’s growing influence and its part in determining the course of future research. Through the identification of emergent topics, the study highlights Anatolia‘s engagement in varied topics and offers a strategic framework for future research.

Conductive Hydrogel Materials for Flexible Supercapacitor Electrodes

Flexible supercapacitors (SCs), as promising energy storage devices, have shown great potential for both next-generation wearable electronics and addressing the global energy crisis. Conductive hydrogels (CHs) are suitable electrode materials for flexible SCs on account of their intrinsic characteristics and functional advantages, such as a unique 3D porous structure, remarkable conductivity, tunable chemical and physical properties, and outstanding mechanical properties. Herein, an overview of the fabrication strategies for CHs as electrode materials in flexible SCs, as well as their advantages and disadvantages, and perspectives on CH-based SCs is provided. First, the fabrication strategies for CHs are systematically introduced. Second, various multifunctional CH-based SCs are presented and discussed. Finally, this review concludes with insights into the challenges and opportunities related to CHs or CH-based SCs, indicating future research prospects and application orientations in this field.

How does artificial intelligence affect the diversification transformation of labour relations? A perspective from the regional cultural differences in China

ABSTRACT This paper explores how AI affects labour relations from the perspective of regional cultural differences. Based on Chinese provincial panel data, the paper constructs a moderating effect model to reveal the moderating role of various cultural factors. The results show that AI promotes the transformation of labour relations towards flexibility, legalization, and de-collectivization. High future orientation facilitates AI for labour relations flexibility. High gender equality facilitates AI for labour relations legalization. Low in-group collectivism facilitates AI for labour relations de-collectivization. Based on the findings of the study, we propose policy recommendations for the government to consider.

Fairness, Trust, and Well-Being Among Young Adults: Evidence from 2021 Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS).

Background. As China has undergone tremendous socioeconomic and demographic changes during and after the pandemic, it is crucial to enhance youth well-being and facilitate their transition into the workforce. This study aims to explore the multi-dimensional features of well-being and examine their relationships with fairness and trust. Methods. Using the nationally representative data from the 2021 Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS), this study analyzes the well-being of 1726 young adults aged 18 to 34 years old living in 19 provinces in China. Results. The research findings generate five latent factors of well-being and reveal the multi-faceted nature of subjective well-being, including physical and mental health challenges, positive outlook, sense of purpose, personal growth, and self-fulfillment. Physical and mental health is the cornerstone for well-being and happiness. Young people with poor physical and mental health conditions are less likely to perceive that society is fair or that people are trustworthy. Additionally, a positive outlook and future orientation are strongly associated with high fairness and/or trust. Discussion and Conclusions. By investigating the differential domains of well-being, this study contributes to the literature with the new conceptualization of well-being sub-measures and their application to youth. Furthermore, this study identifies that well-being is not only an individual-level characteristic but also a group-level attribute that can contribute to fairness and trust at the societal level. As China continues to expand its infrastructure on education, health, and technology, it is expected that sustainable economic growth and development should boost young people's career development and promote their upward mobility.

Gratitude despite unease among Swedish male forensic psychiatric patients with substance use disorders: an interview study

ABSTRACT Purpose Forensic psychiatric inpatient care in Sweden is characterized by strict regulations and adherence to court-mandated rules, with a median care time of 7 years. Comorbity has significant clinical implications, impacting health and well-being, violent behaviour and criminal recidivism, and prolonging inpatient stays. This study investigated the individual experiences and perspectives of Swedish patients in forensic psychiatric care with substance use (SU) disorders, focusing on past, present and future orientations. Methods Ten male forensic psychiatric inpatients were individually interviewed following a semi-structured interview guide. A qualitative content analysis was conducted to inductively analyse the participants’ experiences. The study adhered to the Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research. Results Under the main theme of “embracing harmony in opposition”, three categories emerged: (1) unveiling the beginning of SU and its impact on navigating challenges in care, (2) exploring current confined care and gratitude despite unease and (3) yearning for a somewhat normal life. Conclusions Participants’ subjective perspectives underscored the importance of factors such as forensic nurses/healthcare providers in forensic psychiatry considering the patients’ life narratives, their aspirations for the future, their need for a secure environment and patient—staff relationships. These findings highlight the need for structural interventions that emphasize the importance of tailored and comprehensive health plans within rehabilitation.

Becoming a Nurse: Professional Identity in Prelicensure Nursing Students.

A correlation exists between professional identity (PI), hope, and job satisfaction that warrants interventional measures to reverse nurse turnover. Developing, nurturing, and improving nurses' PI can positively address nurse turnover. The purpose of this study was to examine the intersections between career motivation, PI formation, and belongingness in prelicensure nursing students. As part of a larger mixed-methods study, a quantitative survey was disseminated to students. Findings suggest significant connections between the depth of perceived PI, motivation to enter the field, and future orientation(s) that are mediated through classroom instruction. PI was shaped by student relationships, confidence, and autonomy. Findings underscore the importance of academic intentionality in incorporating PI early in nursing education. Prioritizing quality bedside experiences to develop meaningful relationships while simultaneously increasing confidence and autonomy to assist the nursing student in connecting with their PI is key.

How do cue utilization and value co-creation and future orientation affect the consumers’ choices of smart agricultural products?

Facing sustainability challenges and the demand for green and high-quality food, smart agriculture has become a key solution, and understanding consumer preferences for its products is crucial for sustainable development. By employing a structural equation model and using the sample data of an online survey conducted in China, this study investigated consumers’ intention to purchase smart agricultural products, thereby examining the effects of value co-creation, cue utilization, attitude, and future orientation. According to the results, cue utilization positively affects value co-creation and attitude. In addition, value co-creation and attitude can promote consumers’ purchase intention. Moreover, future orientation positively moderates the effect of attitude on purchase intention. These findings have substantial practical implications for formulating marketing strategies aimed at promoting the consumption of smart agricultural products. By strengthening the effects of cue utilization, value co-creation, and future orientation, marketers can specifically target consumers and facilitate the transition to more sustainable consumption patterns.

Research on the Implementation Path of English Curriculum Policy for Compulsory Education in the New Era

This paper aims to explore the implementation path of English curriculum policy for compulsory education, with primary and secondary English education in northwest China as a case study for an in-depth analysis. The paper first reviews the evolution of educational policies over the past decade. Starting from the definition, nature, and carriers of curriculum policy, this paper introduces the research output of domestic and foreign scholars on the implementation of English curriculum policy. This paper proposes three characteristics and five practical pathways to implement English curriculum policy in compulsory education. Based on the above analysis, the paper proposes future research orientations, including regional decision-making strategies, comprehensive methodological frameworks, the synergy between English curriculum policy and other educational policies, and the localization and practical orientation of curriculum policy.

Self-regulated learning, self-efficacy and life-long learning: the mediating role of future orientation

PurposeThis study aims to investigate the intricate relations between self-regulated learning, life-long learning and academic self-efficacy, while also evaluating the mediating influence of future time orientation.Design/methodology/approachUtilizing a cross-sectional research design, data were amassed from 2,943 Romanian secondary school students in 11th and 12th grades via structured questionnaires: the self-regulated learning questionnaire, the academic self-efficacy scale, the future orientation scale derived from the Zimbardo time perspective inventory (ZTPI) and the lifelong learning scale.FindingsThe findings corroborate that self-regulated learning and academic self-efficacy when mediated by future time orientation, bolster life-long learning.Practical implicationsThese results indicate that enhancing comprehension of future time orientation within the educational framework could potentially boost life-long learning.Originality/valueThis work is an original contribution, synthesizing existing literature, empirical findings and theoretical frameworks to advance our understanding of the multifaceted relationships shaping individuals' learning journey throughout their lives. Our focus on the mediating influence of future orientation adds a novel dimension to understanding the mechanisms through which individuals actively engage in learning throughout their lives.

Work autonomy and exit-voice choice: the role of skill utilization, learning from colleagues and future time orientation

PurposeUnderpinned by the exit-voice and work design models, this study investigates how work autonomy reduces employee turnover intentions and promotes voice behavior via the mediator of skill utilization and how this mediation process is moderated by social (learning from colleagues) and personality (future time orientation) characteristics.Design/methodology/approachThe hypothesized moderated mediation model was tested using regression analysis based on two-wave survey data of 350 Chinese employees.FindingsThe relationships between work autonomy on the one hand and voice behavior and turnover intentions on the other were mediated by skill utilization. Furthermore, such mediated relationships were intensified by collegial learning and future time orientation.Practical implicationsAdopting empowering HR practices (e.g. autonomous work teams and job rotation) that give employees job control and learning opportunities is important to encourage employee voice and reduce turnover.Originality/valueThe paper identifies collegial learning and future time orientation as boundary conditions that regulate the effects of work autonomy. This reconciles the contradictory findings in prior research testing the relationship between autonomy and exit-voice decisions.

The relationship between four indicators of future time orientation, criminal thinking style, and illegal behaviors.

Individuals who commit criminal behaviors are often thought to prioritize short-term goals rather than long-term goals (i.e., a present vs. a future time orientation). Though previous theories of crime and empirical research support a relationship among future time orientation, criminal thinking, and illegal behaviors, there is disagreement in the literature about how to operationalize the multidimensional construct of future time orientation. The primary aim of this pre-registered survey study was to measure multiple components of future time orientation to better understand the relationship with criminality-related outcomes. Participants were 248 undergraduate college students. Survey materials included a measure of impulsivity (Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11), self-control (Brief Self-Control Scale), delay discounting (Monetary Choice Questionnaire), and Carstensen's Future Time Perspective Scale. Participants also completed two measures of criminal thinking style (the Texas Christian University Criminal Thinking Scale, the Criminogenic Cognitions Scale) and an illegal behaviors checklist. Bivariate results demonstrated a negative relationship between future time orientation (i.e., low impulsivity, high self-control, high future time perspective) and criminal thinking style. The relationship between delay discounting and criminal thinking was in the hypothesized direction but failed to reach statistical significance. Multiple regression analyses indicated that the measure of self-control had the most consistent and incrementally significant relationship with both criminal thinking style and illegal behaviors. Theoretical and practical implications of the results are discussed along with study limitations and future directions.

Enantioselective photochemical reactions within the confined cavities of supramolecular assemblies

Compared to bulk solvents, reactions in the confined spaces of supramolecular self-assemblies feature rate acceleration, high efficiency and substrate selectivity. These advantages lead to efficient catalytic efficiency and excellent selectivity in enantioselective supramolecular photochemical transformations. During the last few years, enantioselective supramolecular photocatalysis has developed into one of the most powerful strategies to construct enantioenriched chiral compounds. In this review, the recent advances of enantioselective photochemical reactions taking place within the confined spaces of supramolecular assemblies are summarized, with an emphasis on the specific catalytic modes and chemical transformations. Organization of the data follows a subdivision according to supramolecular host and reaction type. At last, the current limitations and the future research orientation of this research field are discussed.
