Destructive and non-destructive strength performance of iron slag recycled aggregate concrete using regression and grey correlation analysis

The future construction industry will demand for sustainable concrete, either by recycling or direct incorporation of industrial by-products for effective solution of ecological concerns. The paper covers, outcomes of an investigation conducted to assess the ‘performance of iron slag (0–30 %) recycled aggregate concrete (ISRA) with different levels of recycled (0–100 %) concrete aggregates (RCA)’ using destructive (DT) ‘(compressive, split-tensile and flexure strength)’ and non-destructive ‘(pulse velocity, electrical resistivity and rebound hammer)’ testing (NDT). The strength characters were evaluated to develop statistical regression and grey co-relations. ISRA concrete resulted majorly in decrease of pulse velocities, electrical resistance (up to 28 %) and rebound numbers (by 10) at higher alteration levels. The correlation coefficients were evaluated using linear regression and grey analysis. The grey correlations resulted in visible variations, indicating disparity in magnitude of ISRA concrete. The higher regression (>0.75) and grey coefficients (GRG>0.8) postulates higher probability of accuracy, successfully validate the outcomes.

Virtual Prototyping, as relatively young technology, is combination of Virtual Reality and computer technologies with digital prototypes as result. It represents original's true copy in the real world, providing more efficient models' testing, prior construction. With it's implementation in the Construction Industry all the work becomes cheaper, faster, safer, environmentaly friendly and more efficient in comparison to the traditional ones. The paper's primary purpose is brief introduction to modern technologies towards which the future construction industry strives. Description of the basic terms is being followed by the explanation of main characteristics and need for the Virtual Prototyping implementation in the Architectural, Engineering & Construction Industry. Virtual Prototyping tools and real-life applications have been stated as well. At the end, limitations and possible problems are mentioned. Therefore, link between Virtual Prototyping and Architectural, Engineering & Construction Industry is created.</p>

Research on high-rise building risk identification and safety risk factor analysis

High-rise building is the trend of the future construction industry and the symbol of the continuous development of urbanization in China. However, safety accidents often occur during the construction of high-rise buildings, which bring people property losses, and sometimes even endanger the safety of life. Therefore, in order to effectively reduce the construction safety accident rate and improve the level of risk management, the construction of high-rise building safety risk focus on and research. This paper first analyzes the construction characteristics of high-rise buildings and accident types. According to the accident cause theory and hazard identification method, the major hazard sources in high-rise building construction are identified. Finally, this paper analyzes the construction of high-rise building risk factors. This paper can provide a theoretical basis for the construction of high-rise building safety risk assessment system, and provide a scientific and reliable risk management platform for the relevant units, so as to improve the safety awareness and risk management level of construction personnel.

Study of photovoltaic integrated prefabricated components for assembled buildings based on sensing technology supported by solar energy

Abstract In recent years, domestic and international policies to support energy-efficient buildings have been intensively introduced, and a consensus has been reached in the direction of green buildings. Building photovoltaic integration is a key technology to solve the demand for electricity in energy-efficient buildings. Meanwhile, prefabricated assembly house construction, as a common construction technology in the current building field, has the advantages of a short construction period, low project cost, a wide range of applications, and high structural stability. Green building and building industrialization are the direction of future construction industry development, combining building photovoltaic (PV) integration with assembly building, breaking down the whole structure into simple components in the factory standardization, batch production, and then on-site assembly, can reduce the mold cost, speed up the construction speed, and improve economic efficiency. The PV solar integrated assembled facade is in line with the concept of energy saving, low carbon, and environmental protection, with significant social benefits, which helps to promote rapidly in the market. In this article, by analyzing the performance and characteristics of PV modules, we propose the design method of PV-integrated prefabricated components for assembled buildings based on sensing technology, extract relevant design parameters from the database of building PV-integrated components, and test the feasibility of the modeling scheme in four stages of engineering design. The use of the results shows that the method of this article can target to improve the accuracy of PV-integrated prefabricated components, ensure the efficiency of component production and processing, and play an important role in supporting the widespread application of modern construction technology for building PV-integrated prefabricated assemblies.

Enterprise blockchain solutions for vibrant construction ecosystem: Grey Ordinal Priority Approach

PurposeThe aim of this article states that in each stage of the industrial revolution, only a few initiatives have been real game changers. In Industry 3.0, “Internet of Information” has transformed the business landscape via connectivity and communications. Enterprises could come together to spur innovation in a cooperative or competitive manner. In Industry 4.0, the “Internet of Value” has shown considerable benefits; and, blockchain technology is expected to touch all layers of a business ecosystem, and the construction industry is not an exception.Design/methodology/approachThis study aims to answer the “How do enterprise blockchain solutions contribute to the vibrancy of the construction ecosystem from social, economic, and environmental aspects?” Following a comprehensive literature review, the Grey Ordinal Priority Approach (OPA-G) is employed in multiple criteria decision analysis (MCDA). OPA-G can select functionally rich enterprise blockchain solutions that meet the needs of the future construction industry, while there is uncertainty in the input data.FindingsThe results from the case study show that organization under observation welcomes an enterprise blockchain solution that delivers services related to “renewable energy certificates” in the context of “smart cities and built environment”. Employing high-ranked blockchain solutions brings vibracy and sustainability to construction ecosystem in terms of “C6. decentralized finance and investment,” “C3. multi-party and cross-industry collaboration,” and “C8. data-driven value creation”.Originality/valueAt the micro level, blockchain solutions automate processes, streamline operations, and build new capacities on a new business model. At the macro level, blockchain creates a vibrant ecosystem based on transparency, decentralization, consensus-based democracy, interoperability, etc. Indeed, the capability of blockchain solutions at an enterprise scale (enterprise blockchain solutions) can shape a new construction ecosystem. The practical implications of current research are preparing executives for a fundamentally different next normal in construction.

Exploring the importance of sustainability in the construction industry

This article focuses on sustainable development in the construction industry and analyses the environmental, economic and social impacts of sustainable construction. The environmental aspects mainly include energy consumption and new energy use, garbage recycling. Sustainable construction also has a mitigating effect on some problems in urban development, such as the heat island effect. In terms of economy, sustainable construction can improve the economic efficiency of the construction industry and drive the comprehensive development of all aspects of the construction industry. On the social side, sustainable architecture reduces the pressure on the city and contributes to the long-term stability of society. Through multi-faceted assessments and analysis from different perspectives, the importance of sustainability for the current and future construction industry is illustrated. Nowadays, high energy consumption and high pollution in the building industry are harmful to humans. In order to change the status quo and meet the requirements of development, it is necessary to integrate the concept of sustainable construction into the design, construction, and energy consumption of construction in the future. The article also makes recommendations on how sustainable buildings can be well-known or recognized in the future and contribute to the sustainability of the future construction industry.

Development of Large-capacity BIM Optimization and Augmented Reality Visualization Technology

The construction industry builds and utilizes BIM models to efficiently manage collected data. In order to develop into the future construction industry through construction automation, visualization of construction information based on augmented reality (AR) that connects the real environment and the virtual world is essential. BIM combined with augmented reality enables real-time visualization and can improve decision-making and project processing efficiency. However, most BIM models in the field of architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) are large and have many difficulties in expressing information in a web-based platform or AR device environment due to the vast amount of data. In order to efficiently visualize BIM data even with such limited resources, construction large-capacity BIM optimization algorithm for augmented reality visualization technology is developed in this study. As a result of laboratory experiments, the proposed algorithm maintained the characteristics of the original model while efficiently compressing the vertices, triangles, and file size of the geometric model while maintaining the overall shape of the model. The optimized model can visualize for AR device environments and is expected to be used as data visualization and augmented reality automation systems at construction sites.

A Study of Collaborative Innovation Mechanism of Prefabricated Construction Enterprises Using Order Parameter

In innovation-driven development, collaborative innovation is gradually becoming a critical sustainable way for prefabricated construction enterprises (PCEs). However, academia and industry do not have a deep understanding of the collaborative innovation of prefabricated construction enterprises (CIPCE), and there is a lack of quantitative-driven research. This study aims to analyze the composition of the CIPCE and measure the operation process and results of the mechanism based on the order parameter. First of all, this study uses semi-structured interviews to analyze the mechanism of CIPCE in the current construction environment. Next, combining structured interviews and literature analysis, the original data was obtained through a questionnaire survey from 15 PCEs in Shenyang, China. Finally, according to the order parameter method, the operation process and results of the CIPCE mechanism are further measured, that is, the synergy and innovation performance that affects its decision-making. The results show that the CIPCE includes four sub-mechanisms: dual drive, resource supply, collaborative operation, and trust guarantee. The orderliness of enterprises has risen overall with partial fluctuations, and the synergy is low. Enterprise innovation performance generally presents a relatively high, but local fluctuations lead to continuous changes. These findings point out the direction for PCEs to maintain their competitiveness in response to the climate crisis and provide action guidelines for the future construction industry to minimize the negative impact on the environment.

Tensile Performance of Headed Anchors in Steel Fiber Reinforced and Conventional Concrete in Uncracked and Cracked State.

Steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) is currently the material of choice for a broad range of structural components. Through the use of SFRC, the entire, or a large portion of, conventional rebar reinforcement can be replaced, in order to improve the load-bearing behavior but also the serviceability and durability characteristics of engineering structures. The use of fiber reinforcement therefore plays a vital role in acute current and future construction industry objectives, these being a simultaneous increase in the service life of structures and the reduction of their environmental impact, in addition to resilience to extreme loads and environmental actions. Next to the extended use of SFRC, modern construction relies heavily on structural connections and assembly technologies, typically by use of bolt-type cast-in and post-installed concrete anchors. This paper addresses the influence of fiber reinforcement on the structural performance of such anchors in SFRC and, particularly, the load bearing behavior of single headed anchors under axial static loads in uncracked and cracked concrete. Along with a presentation of background information on previous studies of SFRC with a focus on anchor concrete breakout failure, the experimental investigations are described, and their results are presented and elaborated on by consideration of various research parameters. A comparison with current design approaches is also provided. The conclusions are deemed useful for structural engineering research and practice.

Fracture behavior study of self-healing bacterial concrete

Presently, the construction sector expects quicker strength attainment in concrete so that the works can be finished on or before the schedule. This mandate is solved by high early strength cement and the usage of a low water/cement ratio. However, the above process results in a large amount of thermal and drying shrinkage, modulus of elasticity, and lower creep coefficients. Further, with a large amount of cement, concrete shows larger cracking behavior because of amplified thermal shrinkage and drying shrinkage. Therefore, high early strength concrete enhances the risk of cracking compared to moderate strength concrete. To decrease the effect of initial cracks and to repair the generated cracks in the concrete, several methods have been used in the industry. Self-healing bacterial concrete is one such method. Preliminary investigations have shown that using bacterial self-healing concrete helps us in increasing the mechanical properties of concrete along with healing the cracks up to a width of 0.3 mm. In this research, an effort is made to comprehend the effect of bacterial self-healing concrete on the fracture behavior of reinforced concrete beams. To understand this, several parameters such as beam deflection, load-carrying capacity, cracking pattern, energy absorption capacity, ductility factor, and ultimate moment carrying capacity, were checked with M25 grade concrete with fly ash and silica fume. Different parameters confirm that the load-carrying capacity of self-healing concrete increased up to 21% with a change in fracture behavior and deflection with a greater number of cracks and less width. Further ductility of beam increased up to 45%, and with a minimum of increased energy absorption of 100%. This shows that bacterial concrete is a sustainable alternative for the future construction industry as it extends the durability of the structure.

The use of robots in the labor-intensive construction industry can save a lot of manpower and avoid personal injury to the greatest extent, while also greatly improving work efficiency. This paper proposes new solutions for the future construction industry under the background of an aging society through the application research of several typical construction robots.

Development of sustainable concrete incorporating seawater: A critical review on cement hydration, microstructure and mechanical strength

Many countries are experiencing freshwater crises due to the increasing growth of the population together with the infrastructure construction that is aligned with the needs of freshwater for concrete production. There are also deficiencies in freshwater in many coastal areas where seawater is more accessible. To reduce unnecessary resource-wasting and meanwhile drive sustainable development in the construction industry, great efforts have been made to utilize seawater as the alternative mixing water for concrete casting, which presents potential economical and environmental benefits in the coastal and island regions. This paper comprehensively reviews the current studies on the predominant performance differences between seawater-mixed and conventional concretes with freshwater. Particular attention is paid to the chloride-induced hydration mechanism due to the chloride ions in seawater. The main findings of this review reveal that although harmful ingredients in seawater may weaken some of the concrete performances, applying proper curing conditions and adding moderate additives and admixtures could significantly and effectively mitigate these defects in properties. However, the unstable chloride binding ability in cement hydrates cannot eliminate the risk of rebar corrosion caused by chlorides in seawater, resulting in a limited scope of practical application. Finally, some trade-offs are recommended in using seawater in concrete, suggesting prospects of applications in the future construction industry. This study guides for the safer use of seawater in sustainable concrete through reviewing the advanced research progress.

Assessing the dimensional stability of alkali-activated calcined clays in the fresh state: a time-lapse X-ray imaging approach

Alkali-activated calcined clays are promising candidates for playing a prominent role in the future construction industry. These binders may achieve excellent mechanical performance, but one issue deserving attention is the proneness to plastic shrinkage and surface cracking. Tackling this issue requires the deployment of laboratory techniques that allow shrinkage-inducing mechanisms to be quantitatively assessed. Here, we demonstrate that time-lapse X-ray imaging can be used to quantify shrinkage immediately after mixing, when the binder is still in its fresh state, with excellent time and space resolution. The numeric quantification of strain is complemented by the real time visual inspection of the displacing sample interface and of the bleed aqueous solution layer that may form. Implementation of this method to a set of alkali-activated cement pastes, prepared by combining calcined clays having different mineralogical composition with sodium silicate activating solutions having different hbox {SiO}_2/hbox {Na}_2hbox {O} ratios, suggests that two main mechanisms control the early dimensional stability of alkali-activated calcined clays. These mechanisms are: (a) volumetric contraction occurring in response to capillary stress arising from water evaporation and (b) segregation by particle settling, favoured in the water-saturated regime.

ORGANIZATION CHARACTERISTICS: CAN THEY INFLUENCE THE CONSTRUCTION INNOVATION?

Heavy constructions are increasingly becoming more complicated, demanding increased innovative methods, and greater technological advancement. The complexity of the industry, generally has been described as multi-faceted and highly fragmented with significant problems such as communication breakdown, conflicts, and disputes. The lack of organization characteristics can apparently limit the effort of the construction industries to adopt the technology and innovation. Hence, this paper aims to investigate to the influence of organization characteristics namely construction type, presence of trade unions, and professional and trade association affiliation towards the construction innovation. In order to achieve the research objectives, mail surveys have been conducted among the construction companies in Malaysia. A total of 703 questionnaire surveys were mailed to randomly selected construction companies that operating in Malaysia and registered as G7 contractor with CIDB. The number of returned usable surveys totaled 383, yielding an effective response rate of 54.4%. All the organizational characteristics proposed have been found to be positively correlated with construction innovation. Apart from suggesting the direction of future construction industry study, this paper is valuable in providing insights for the contractors in implementing innovative construction technologies that can be used to devise strategic marketing plans and ultimately for enjoyment of competitive advantages.

Application Scheme Of Fiber Bragg Grating Sensor In Prefabricated Building

Prefabricated building has the advantages of low energy consumption, high resource utilization and fast construction speed, which is the key technology for the development and upgrading of the future construction industry. In this paper, based on the existing shortcomings of prefabricated buildings, as well as the characteristics of anti-electromagnetic interference and strong corrosion resistance of fiber Bragg grating sensors, an application scheme is proposed to improve the safety of prefabricated buildings by utilizing the stress detection functions of fiber Bragg grating sensors.

Perception of future professionals of the construction industry of green building and architecture practices

Green building as a new concept is gaining more and more value, acts as an important mitigating measure against the negative side effects of economic activity in cities. The implementation of the ideas and practices of sustainable development in the construction industry has led to the emergence of a new direction – benvironmental (“green”) construction, which provides a much higher level of quality of facilities for constructed object. A study was carried out of the problems and prospects of green construction and architecture in cities. In this paper, the concept of green building and architecture is refined. The perception of green building and architecture practices by future construction industry professionals, the advantages and benefits of green building and architecture was investigated, factors that impede the implementation of green building in practice were identified. Currently, green building is little practiced for objective reasons. The practice of green building is hindered by a number of factors, for example, an unfavorable external environment in the form of policy or legislation, the economic situation in the country, negative market expectations, and lack of awareness. Health and increased productivity have been identified as the most important benefits of green building, followed by a reduction in the cost of construction and individual operations, and the conservation of natural resources. The recommendations addressed to non-governmental organizations, government bodies, professional communities are formulated.

Improvement of Early-Age Strength of High-Volume Siliceous Fly Ash Concrete with Nanosilica - A Review

Abstract High-volume fly ash concrete, which incorporates more than 50 % fly ash as a replacement of cement in concrete, is a breakthrough development in concrete technology. Many of its properties have been investigated through decades of research, and the results have been disseminated. However, the construction industry has never showed confidence in using high-volume fly ash concrete. This is primarily due to its slow rate of strength development at early ages, notwithstanding its promising engineering and environmental benefits. Attempts have been made earlier to improve the early strength of the high-volume fly ash concrete by mechanical grinding, chemical activation of fly ash, addition of supplementary cementitious materials like silica fume, blast furnace slag, and metakaolin, etc. Nanosilica is a recent entry to the family of supplementary cementitious materials and has exhibited a better performance in concrete than other supplementary cementitious materials. This review discusses the limitations of high-volume fly ash concrete, most widely attempted methods to improve its early-age strength, and progress made on the use of nanosilica in this regard. The article also underlines the need for further research on nanosilica-incorporated high-volume fly ash concrete for developing a structurally viable and practically possible high-volume fly ash concrete, which could be a sustainable solution for the construction industry in future.

Present Situation and Problems Analysis of Waterproof and Seal of Prefabricated Building Exterior Wall

With the continuous development and progress of China's social economy, the construction speed of our construction industry is also accelerating. Compared with the traditional cast-in-place reinforced concrete and masonry building, it has been unable to meet the requirements of the construction industry and the development of the times. Because the prefabricated building has the advantages of fast speed, water saving, land saving, noise reduction, material saving and energy saving in installation. Compared with traditional buildings, the prefabricated building is more energy efficient and practical. Therefore, the new type of precast assembly architecture is constantly highlighted and has become the mainstream of the development of the future construction industry. However, the technology started late in China, and the immature technology and imperfect supporting standards led to slow progress and even stagnation in China's construction industry. Through the analysis of the present situation and problems of the waterproof and sealing of the prefabricated building exterior walls, the suggestions for the healthy development of the construction industry in China are put forward in time.
