Long term declines in the functional diversity of sharks in the coastal oceans of eastern Australia

Human impacts lead to widespread changes in the abundance, diversity and traits of shark assemblages, altering the functioning of coastal ecosystems. The functional consequences of shark declines are often poorly understood due to the absence of empirical data describing long-term change. We use data from the Queensland Shark Control Program in eastern Australia, which has deployed mesh nets and baited hooks across 80 beaches using standardised methodologies since 1962. We illustrate consistent declines in shark functional richness quantified using both ecological (e.g., feeding, habitat and movement) and morphological (e.g., size, morphology) traits, and this corresponds with declining ecological functioning. We demonstrate a community shift from targeted apex sharks to a greater functional richness of non-target species. Declines in apex shark functional richness and corresponding changes in non-target species may lead to an anthropogenically induced trophic cascade. We suggest that repairing diminished shark populations is crucial for the stability of coastal ecosystems.

Marine predators segregate interspecifically by space and time in a sheltered coastal bay.

Marine predators are vital to the healthy functioning of coastal ecosystems, but to understand their roles, it is necessary to elucidate their movement ecology, particularly in relation to one another. A decade's worth of acoustic telemetry data (2011-2020) from Algoa Bay, South Africa, was investigated to determine how two mesopredatory species (teleosts: dusky kob Argyrosomus japonicus, n = 11, and leervis Lichia amia, n = 16) and two top predatory species (sharks: ragged-tooth sharks Carcharias taurus, n = 45, and white sharks Carcharodon carcharias, n = 31) used and shared this bay ecosystem. Multi-annual seasonal fidelity to the bay was exhibited by all species, but differences in residency were observed among species. Similarly, species used space in the bay differently-the teleosts moved less and had movements restricted to the central and western inshore regions of the bay. Conversely, the sharks roamed more, but detections were concentrated in the western part of the bay for C. taurus and in the eastern part of the bay for C. carcharias. Social network analysis showed that species segregated in space and time on a fine scale. However, there was some interaction observed between C. taurus, L. amia, and A. japonicus, but to varying degrees. This is likely because of strong habitat preferences exhibited by each species and predator-prey relationships between these predatory guilds. Results highlight that the sheltered marine Algoa Bay is a resource-rich environment, supporting multiple predators with different hunting strategies albeit similar prey preferences. Finally, these species are likely afforded some protection by the current Greater Addo Elephant National Park Marine Protected Area in the bay but are vulnerable to fishing pressure when they leave this ecosystem.

Land use change and coastal water darkening drive synchronous dynamics in phytoplankton and fish phenology on centennial timescales

AbstractAt high latitudes, the suitable window for timing reproductive events is particularly narrow, promoting tight synchrony between trophic levels. Climate change may disrupt this synchrony due to diverging responses to temperature between, for example, the early life stages of higher trophic levels and their food resources. Evidence for this is equivocal, and the role of compensatory mechanisms is poorly understood. Here, we show how a combination of ocean warming and coastal water darkening drive long‐term changes in phytoplankton spring bloom timing in Lofoten Norway, and how spawning time of Northeast Arctic cod responds in synchrony. Spring bloom timing was derived from hydrographical observations dating back to 1936, while cod spawning time was estimated from weekly fisheries catch and roe landing data since 1877. Our results suggest that land use change and freshwater run‐off causing coastal water darkening has gradually delayed the spring bloom up to the late 1980s after which ocean warming has caused it to advance. The cod appear to track phytoplankton dynamics by timing gonadal development and spawning to maximize overlap between offspring hatch date and predicted resource availability. This finding emphasises the importance of land–ocean coupling for coastal ecosystem functioning, and the potential for fish to adapt through phenotypic plasticity.

Bivalve tissues as a recorder of multidecadal global anthropogenic and climate‐mediated change in coastal areas

AbstractRecent rapid changes in climate and environmental conditions have significantly impacted coastal ecosystem functioning. However, the complex interplay between global and local effects makes it challenging to pinpoint the primary drivers. In a multi‐ecosystem study, we analyzed pluri‐decadal trends of bivalve‐δ13C as recorder of global environmental changes. These trends were correlated with large‐scale natural and anthropogenic climate proxies to identify whether coastal biota responded to global effects. Our findings revealed decreasing bivalve‐δ13C trends in all sea regions, mainly linked with increased temperature and atmospheric‐CO2 concentrations, the later generating a decrease in atmospheric‐CO2 δ13C values (Suess effect) because of fossil‐fuel burning. After removing the Suess effect from bivalve‐δ13C trends, ongoing global climate variability continues to affect most ecosystems, possibly intensified by combined, interacting regional or local effects. These results highlight the need to consider large‐scale effects to fully understand ecosystem and food web responses to the multiple effects of global change.

Decadal changes of macrofauna community in a semi-enclosed Bay of Yueqing in East China Sea

To reveal the long-term variation of macrofauna community in Yueqing Bay, an aquacultural bay famous for its shellfish culturing in the East China Sea, macrofauna samples were collected in three period from 2002 to 2003 and 2006–2007 to 2020–2021. The results show that macrofaunal community structure in this area has changed significantly (ANOSIM, p < 0.01) in nearly two decades with significant decreases in species number, biodiversity index and average biomass. Meanwhile, the taxa composition also changed significantly as the dominance of annelid increased while that of mollusks, echinoderms and vertebrates decreased. As a consequence of the variation of taxa composition and total biomass, macrofauna community showed a tendency of miniaturization as individuals with smaller body size and lower biomass dominated the community. According to the results of CCA analysis, temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen content were the main environmental factors that restricted the species composition of macrofauna community. Further studies still needed to reveal the main reasons that cause the variation of macrofauna community. Overall, the results of this study suggest that the present status of Yueqing Bay benthic ecosystem is concerning from a macrobenthos perspective, as the biodiversity index and biomass of macrofauna decreased significantly. Effective measures should be taken in urgently to restrain the safety and function of coastal ecosystems.

Revealing the Spatial-Temporal Evolution and Obstacles of Ecological Security in the Xiamen-Zhangzhou-Quanzhou Region, China

Climate change and human activities have caused various ecological risks to coastal urban agglomerations. Ecological security refers to the state of health of an ecosystem and its integrity. An objective and comprehensive evaluation of ecological security is significant for protecting the structure and function of coastal ecosystems. The driving force–pressure–state–impact–response (DPSIR) model was used to construct a dynamic simulation model of ecological security in the Xiamen–Zhangzhou–Quanzhou region (XZQR), located on the eastern coast of China. The ecological security level (ESL) characteristics of the spatial and temporal patterns were evaluated by calculating the ecological security index (ESI). Obstacle factors were analyzed as well. The results show the following: (1) From 2011 to 2021, the average ESI rose from 0.238 to 0.686 and went through a relatively insecure stage (2011–2015), a critical stage (2016–2019), and a relatively secure stage (2020–2021). (2) The ESI level in Quanzhou was higher in the early stage, and the level of ecological security in Zhangzhou showed a significant rising trend, increasing by 0.541. Its increase depended on increases in the impact layer. (3) The impact layer is the main obstacle layer affecting the ESL, and the main obstacles include CO2 emissions (0.117), annual rainfall (0.091), general public budget expenditures (0.082), GDP growth rates (0.082), and green coverage in built-up areas (0.075). Therefore, we recommend promoting the complementary advantages of the XZQR and implementing ecological restoration projects.

Developing a Redox Network for Coastal Saltmarsh Systems in the PFLOTRAN Reaction Model

AbstractCoastal ecosystems have been largely ignored in Earth system models but are important zones for carbon and nutrient processing. Interactions between water, microbes, soil, sediments, and vegetation are important for mechanistic representation of coastal processes and ecosystem function. To investigate the role of these feedbacks, we used a reactive transport model (PFLOTRAN) that has the capability to be connected to the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM). PFLOTRAN was used to incorporate redox reactions and track chemical species important for coastal ecosystems as well as define simple representations of vegetation dynamics. Our goal was to incorporate oxygen flux, salinity, pH, sulfur cycling, and methane production along with plant‐mediated transport of gases and tidal flux. Using porewater profile and incubation data for model calibration and evaluation, we were able to create depth‐resolved biogeochemical soil profiles for saltmarsh habitat and use this updated representation to simulate direct and indirect effects of elevated CO2 and temperature on subsurface biogeochemical cycling. We found that simply changing the partial pressure of CO2 or increasing temperature in the model did not fully reproduce observed changes in the porewater profile, but the inclusion of plant or microbial responses to CO2 and temperature manipulations was more accurate in representing porewater concentrations. This indicates the importance of characterizing tightly coupled vegetation‐subsurface processes for developing predictive understanding and the need for measurement of plant‐soil interactions on the same time scale to understand how hotspots or moments are generated.

Linking Resource Quality and Biodiversity to Benthic Ecosystem Functions Across a Land-to-Sea Gradient

Benthic macrofauna modifies carbon and nutrient retention and recycling processes in coastal habitats. However, the contribution of benthic consumers to carbon and nutrient storage and recycling shows variation over spatial scales, as the benthic community composition changes in response to differences in environmental conditions. By sampling both shallow sandy and deep muddy sediments across a land-to-sea gradient in the northern Baltic Sea, we explored if benthic community composition, stoichiometry and process rates change in response to alterations in environmental conditions and food sources. Our results show that benthic faunal biomass, C, N, and P stocks, respiration rate and secondary production increase across the land-to-sea gradient in response to higher resource quality towards the open sea. The seston δ13C indicated terrestrial runoff and δ15N sewage input at the innermost study sites, whereas more fresh marine organic matter towards the open sea boosted benthic faunal carbon storage, respiration rate, and secondary production, that is, the generation of consumer biomass, which are essential processes for carbon turnover in this coastal ecosystem. Also, biological factors such as increasing species richness and decreasing biomass dominance of the clam Macoma balthica were significant in predicting benthic faunal C, N, and P stocks and process rates, especially at sandy sites. Interestingly, despite the variation in food sources, the benthic faunal C:N:P ratios remained stable across the gradient. Our results prove that human activities in the coastal area can influence the important links between biodiversity, structure, and process rates of benthic communities by modifying the balance of available resources, therefore hampering the functioning of coastal ecosystems.

Leachates of weathering plastics from an urban sandy beach: Toxicity to sea urchin fertilization and early development

Plastic leachates have chemical and biological implications for marine environments. This study experimentally evaluated acute effects of weathering plastic leachates (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 %) on fertilization and early development of the sea urchin Lytechinus variegatus. Fertilization, embryonic and larval development were drastically inhibited (~75 %) when gametes were exposed to intermediate and high leachate concentrations or delayed when exposed to the lowest concentration. Fertilization and first cleavage stages were highly affected by exposure to intermediate and high leachate concentrations. None of the cells incubated at concentrations from 50 % reached blastula stage, suggesting that embryonic development was the most sensitive stage. Abnormalities in embryos and larvae were observed in all leachate treatments. Chemical analysis detected high concentration of bisphenol A, which may induce these observed effects. Our results highlight the potential threats of plastic pollution to sea urchin populations, which may severely affect the structure and functioning of coastal ecosystems.

Oyster shell element composition as a proxy for environmental studies

The use of mollusks' shell as a proxy for long-term trend prediction in the variability of coastal zones has been used as an attempt to understand the consequences that environmental changes may cause to the functioning of coastal ecosystems. This study exploited the elemental concentration, elemental ratios and mineralogy of oyster shells of the genus Crassostrea to infer spatial variations in the environment of the animal's growth. Modern oyster shell samples of the Crassostrea brasiliana and Crassostrea mangle species were analyzed by neutron activation analysis, X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence and Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. Data normalization by the enrichment factor relative to lanthanum (La), considered as a conservative element in seawater, and statistical multivariate analyses indicate that the elemental composition and trace element ratios differ when comparing oyster shells from different regions. The results showed that the performed analyses may be useful for the characterization of the environment in which oysters grow.

Considering species functional and phylogenetic rarity in the conservation of fish biodiversity

AbstractAimRare species make substantial contributions to coastal ecosystem functions. Functional rarity (FR) and phylogenetic rarity (PR) are important features for biodiversity conservation. This work aimed to discuss the necessity and reasonableness of conserving fish FR and PR in coastal seas.LocationChina.MethodsBy compiling historical fish investigation data, joint species distribution modelling (JSDM) was applied to model fish communities in coastal China Seas. Biogeographic patterns of FR and PR were explored, and the effectiveness of current MPA networks in terms of match/mismatch with the hotspots of rarity was assessed.ResultsA total of 44 functionally rare species and 22 phylogenetically rare species were identified. Six of these species were both functionally and phylogenetically rare, and only one was listed as endangered on the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Functional rarity hotspots covered 10.27% of the coastal areas, which geographically converged in the southern and eastern coast of Taiwan, the Yangtze River Estuary and the Yellow River Estuary. Phylogenetic rarity hotspots only covered 3.06% of the coastal areas, which were sporadically distributed in the coastal East China Sea, the Bohai Sea and the northern Yellow Sea. Current marine‐protected areas (MPAs) only represented 16.16% of the FR hotspots and 20.48% of the PR hotspots, indicating substantial mismatched areas between the MPAs and the hotspots of FR and PR.Main ConclusionsOnly considering threatened species in conservation practices will omit functionally and phylogenetically rare species because FR and PR are not necessarily correlated with species threat status on the IUCN Red List. Functional rarity hotspots do not necessarily overlap with PR hotspots, and current MPAs mismatch the majority of these areas. We therefore advocate that conservation prioritization and expansion of MPA networks should account for FR and PR both at the species and site levels.

The metabolites of light: Untargeted metabolomic approaches bring new clues to understand light-driven acclimation of intertidal mudflat biofilm

The microphytobenthos (MPB), a microbial community of primary producers, play a key role in coastal ecosystem functioning, particularly in intertidal mudflats. These mudflats experience challenging variations of irradiance, forcing the micro-organisms to develop photoprotective mechanisms to survive and thrive in this dynamic environment. Two major adaptations to light are well described in literature: the excess of light energy dissipation through non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), and the vertical migration in the sediment. These mechanisms trigger considerable scientific interest, but the biological processes and metabolic mechanisms involved in light-driven vertical migration remain largely unknown. To our knowledge, this study investigates for the first time metabolomic responses of a migrational mudflat biofilm exposed for 30 min to a light gradient of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) from 50 to 1000 μmol photons m−2 s−1. The untargeted metabolomic analysis allowed to identify metabolites involved in two types of responses to light irradiance levels. On the one hand, the production of SFAs and MUFAs, primarily derived from bacteria, indicates a healthy photosynthetic state of MPB under low light (LL; 50 and 100 PAR) and medium light (ML; 250 PAR) conditions. Conversely, when exposed to high light (HL; 500, 750 and 1000 PAR), the MPB experienced light-induced stress, triggering the production of alka(e)nes and fatty alcohols. The physiological and ecological roles of these compounds are poorly described in literature. This study sheds new light on the topic, as it suggests that these compounds may play a crucial and previously unexplored role in light-induced stress acclimation of migrational MPB biofilms. Since alka(e)nes are produced from FAs decarboxylation, these results thus emphasize for the first time the importance of FAs pathways in microphytobenthic biofilms acclimation to light.

Environmental legacy of aquaculture and industrial activities in mangrove ecosystems

Aquaculture and industrial activities have been recognized for their detrimental impact on coastal environment, particularly through large-scale mangrove conversion. This study employs interdisciplinary spatial, geochemical, and metagenomic approaches to examine the environmental legacy of past aquaculture and industrial activities in mangrove rehabilitation areas. The land use change of mangrove, aquaculture, and industrial area was investigated from 1990 to 2020. Mangrove coverage increased in the study area from 49.12 ha in year 1990 to 95.93 ha in 2020. This growth can be attributed to increasing environmental awareness related to issues such as tidal flooding, seawater intrusion, and coastal abrasion. However, despite increasing mangrove coverage, we still identified fecal bacteria communities in both sites, dominated by Campylobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, and Deltaproteobacteria. Additionally, our functional prediction analysis revealed the presence of genes associated with pathogenicity, multidrug/antibiotic resistance, and xenobiotic degradation. We observed high nitrate concentration associated with aquaculture waste that was persistent in porewater even after the activity ended years ago. Low to moderate heavy metal concentration was found in the study sites, likely due to the role of mangroves as a biofilter. We conclude that mangrove restoration contributes to the lower environmental impact of anthropogenic activities on our sites. Therefore, it should be included in future coastal management plans to improve coastal water quality and ecosystem function in environmentally threatened areas.

Emerging phylogeographic perspective on the toxigenic diatom genus Pseudo-nitzschia in coastal northern European waters and gateways to eastern Arctic seas: Causes, ecological consequences and socio-economic impacts

The diatom Pseudo-nitzschia H. Peragallo is perhaps the most intensively researched genus of marine pennate diatoms, with respect to species diversity, life history strategies, toxigenicity, and biogeographical distribution. The global magnitude and consequences of harmful algal blooms (HABs) of Pseudo-nitzschia are particularly significant because of the high socioeconomic impacts and environmental and human health risks associated with the production of the neurotoxin domoic acid (DA) among populations of many (although not all) species. This has led to enhanced monitoring and mitigation strategies for toxigenic Pseudo-nitzschia blooms and their toxins in recent years. Nevertheless, human adaptive actions based on future scenarios of bloom dynamics and proposed shifts in biogeographical distribution under climate-change regimes have not been implemented on a regional scale. In the CoCliME (Co-development of climate services for adaptation to changing marine ecosystems) program these issues were addressed with respect to past, current and anticipated future status of key HAB genera such as Pseudo-nitzschia and expected benefits of enhanced monitoring. Data on the distribution and frequency of Pseudo-nitzschia blooms in relation to DA occurrence and associated amnesic shellfish toxin (AST) events were evaluated in a contemporary and historical context over the past several decades from key northern CoCliME Case Study areas. The regional studies comprised the greater North Sea and adjacent Kattegat-Skagerrak and Norwegian Sea, eastern North Atlantic marginal seas and Arctic gateways, and the Baltic Sea. The first evidence of possible biogeographical expansion of Pseudo-nitzschia taxa into frontier eastern Arctic gateways was provided from DNA barcoding signatures. Key climate change indicators, such as salinity, temperature, and water-column stratification were identified as drivers of upwelling and advection related to the distribution of regional Pseudo-nitzschia blooms. The possible influence of changing variables on bloom dynamics, magnitude, frequency and spatial and temporal distribution were interpreted in the context of regional ocean climate models. These climate change indicators may play key roles in selecting for the occurrence and diversity of Pseudo-nitzschia species within the broader microeukaryote communities. Shifts to higher temperature and lower salinity regimes predicted for the southern North Sea indicate the potential for high-magnitude Pseudo-nitzschia blooms, currently absent from this area. Ecological and socioeconomic impacts of Pseudo-nitzschia blooms are evaluated with reference to effects on fisheries and mariculture resources and coastal ecosystem function. Where feasible, effective adaptation strategies are proposed herein as emerging climate services for the northern CoCLiME region.

Spatial variation in key functional traits of Mediterranean fucoid algae: Insights from Cystoseira sensu lato intertidal canopies

Cystoseira sensu lato are fucoid algae that form dense stands on intertidal and subtidal rocky reefs sustaining species-rich associated assemblages. The increasing human pressure is causing the decline of these marine forests, raising wide concerns on the ecological consequences of their loss. Yet, little is known about functional trait variables of Cystoseira s.l. species, which are essential to a deeper understanding of their contribution to the functioning of coastal ecosystems. We analysed the intraspecific spatial variation of the total organic matter, Corg, N and P contents in Ericaria amentacea from intertidal rocky shores in the W Mediterranean Sea. Specifically, we quantified spatial patterns of variation of traits at large (100s km), small (1000s m), and local (100s cm) scale. We also explored potential interspecific variation by comparing the combined functional profile of trait variables between E. amentacea and Cystoseira compressa, an often co-occurring or vicariant species. Tissue contents of organic matter, Corg, N and P, were consistent among E. amentacea stands, supporting the hypothesis of a large-scale (100s km) spatial homogeneity of such key traits in this species. Overlapping functional profiles between E. amentacea and C. compressa also suggested putative interspecific trait congruencies. However, a small-scale (1000s m) significant variability was found for all trait variables in E. amentacea. Variance components at small (1000s m) and local (100s cm) scale accounted for the largest contribution to the total spatial variation for all traits, recommending caution in the use of small and local-scale trait values to generalize functional performances of Cystoseira s.l. forests over large areas. This study represents one of the first attempts to shed light on the variability of key functional attributes of Cystoseira s.l. species at a range of spatial scales, which could assist more reliable assessments of their functional role and improve their management and conservation.

Response of demersal fishes to low dissolved oxygen events in two eutrophic estuaries

Coastal ecosystems serve as important nursery areas, yet they are facing many challenges. For example, eutrophication-induced hypoxia is one of the major threats to the functioning of coastal ecosystems, particularly estuaries. The Sundays and Swartkops estuaries both experience persistent eutrophic conditions, with frequent phytoplankton blooms (>20 μg Chl-a l−1) that result in instances of bottom-water oxygen depletion (<4 mg/l). Bi-seasonal sampling of both physico-chemical parameters and demersal fishes between February 2018 and September 2019 in the Swartkops and Sundays estuaries allowed for the quantification of low dissolved oxygen (<4 mg/l) and hypoxic (<2 mg/l) events in both estuaries and the impact of low dissolved oxygen (DO) and hypoxic events on overall fish species abundance, richness and distribution. Low DO conditions were typically observed in the bottom waters of the vertically-stratified meso-to polyhaline middle and upper reaches of the Sundays and Swartkops estuaries, respectively. Hypoxic conditions ( DO = 0.5 mg/l) were recorded in the Sundays Estuary during the study, whereas in the Swartkops Estuary the lowest DO recorded was 2.4 mg/l. Low DO events resulted in a decrease in fish species richness and overall abundance in the Sundays Estuary, while in the Swartkops Estuary fish species richness declined during low DO events, with little effect on fish abundance. Fish only completely avoided areas where DO was <1 mg/l or >10 mg/l. As such, the low DO concentrations recorded in the Swartkops Estuary did not have a noticeable impact on fish distribution, although the abundance of Rhabdosargus holubi and Caffrogobius gilchristi declined in the upper reaches of the Swartkops Estuary when DO was <3 mg/l. The results from this study provide much-needed insights into the impact of low DO and hypoxic conditions on the spatial distribution of demersal fish species.

Oligotrophic waters of the Northwest Atlantic support taxonomically diverse diatom communities that are distinct from coastal waters.

Diatoms are important components of the marine food web and one of the most species-rich groups of phytoplankton. The diversity and composition of diatoms in eutrophic nearshore habitats have been well documented due to the outsized influence of diatoms on coastal ecosystem functioning. In contrast, patterns of both diatom diversity and community composition in offshore oligotrophic regions where diatom biomass is low have been poorly resolved. To compare the diatom diversity and community composition in oligotrophic and eutrophic waters, diatom communities were sampled along a 1,250 km transect from the oligotrophic Sargasso Sea to the coastal waters of the northeast US shelf. Diatom community composition was determined by amplifying and sequencing the 18S rDNA V4 region. Of the 301 amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) identified along the transect, the majority (70%) were sampled exclusively from oligotrophic waters of the Gulf Stream and Sargasso Sea and included the genera Bacteriastrum, Haslea, Hemiaulus, Pseudo-nitzschia, and Nitzschia. Diatom ASV richness did not vary along the transect, indicating that the oligotrophic Sargasso Sea and Gulf Stream are occupied by a diverse diatom community. Although ASV richness was similar between oligotrophic and coastal waters, diatom community composition in these regions differed significantly and was correlated with temperature and phosphate, two environmental variables known to influence diatom metabolism and geographic distribution. In sum, oligotrophic waters of the western North Atlantic harbor diverse diatom assemblages that are distinct from coastal regions, and these open ocean diatoms warrant additional study, as they may play critical roles in oligotrophic ecosystems.

Seasonal dynamics of a glycan-degrading flavobacterial genus in a tidally mixed coastal temperate habitat.

Coastal marine habitats constitute hotspots of primary productivity. In temperate regions, this is due both to massive phytoplankton blooms and dense colonisation by macroalgae that mostly store carbon as glycans, contributing substantially to local and global carbon sequestration. Because they control carbon and energy fluxes, algae-degrading microorganisms are crucial for coastal ecosystem functions. Environmental surveys revealed consistent seasonal dynamics of alga-associated bacterial assemblages, yet resolving what factors regulate the in situ abundance, growth rate and ecological functions of individual taxa remains a challenge. Here, we specifically investigated the seasonal dynamics of abundance and activity for a well-known alga-degrading marine flavobacterial genus in a tidally mixed coastal habitat of the Western English Channel. We show that members of the genus Zobellia are a stable, low-abundance component of healthy macroalgal microbiota and can also colonise particles in the water column. This genus undergoes recurring seasonal variations with higher abundances in winter, significantly associated to biotic and abiotic variables. Zobellia can become a dominant part of bacterial communities on decaying macroalgae, showing a strong activity and high estimated in situ growth rates. These results provide insights into the seasonal dynamics and environmental constraints driving natural populations of alga-degrading bacteria that influence coastal carbon cycling.

Salt marsh expansion into estuarine mangrove mudflats reduces nitrogen removal capacity

Salt marsh (Spartina alterniflora) has been rapidly encroaching into mangrove wetlands worldwide. However, the potential effects of salt marsh expansion on coastal nitrogen cycling and ecosystem function remain unclear. In this study, sediment cores were seasonally collected from mangroves, salt marshes and mudflats from 2020 to 2021 to assess their nitrogen cycling. Nitrogen transformation rates of mineralization, immobilization, nitrification, denitrification, anaerobic ammonium oxidization (anammox), and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) were determined using 15N isotope tracer techniques. Rate measurements were paired with analysis of physicochemical properties, carbon isotopes, and nitrogen functional genes. The results showed that compared to mangrove sediments, salt marsh sediments mostly exhibited lower mineralization and denitrification rates but higher nitrification rates. Mudflat sediments had the lowest mineralization and denitrification rates among the studied habitats, while the nitrification rates were close to those of salt marshes. The differences in carbon quantity and source, nitrogen gene abundances, and carbon and nitrogen substrate availabilities controlled the variations in nitrogen transformation rates. The balance of these rates was used to indicate the net nitrogen retention or removal capacity of the three habitats. On an annual scale, salt marshes exhibited ammonium (NH4+-N) removal while mangroves had net NH4+-N retention. Nitrate (NO3--N) was removed both in salt marsh and mangrove sediments with larger removal capacity in mangroves. Salt marsh sediments had lower NH4+-N removal but higher NO3--N removal levels than mudflat sediments. In summary, salt marsh invasion decreased the overall nitrogen removal levels in the mangrove-mudflat wetland. The future scenarios of increasing salt marsh coverage suggest a decreased removal of nitrogen loads, which has important implications for mitigating coastal eutrophication.
