Path-integral quantum Monte Carlo calculations of light nuclei

We describe a path-integral ground-state quantum Monte Carlo method for light nuclei in continuous space. We show how to efficiently update and sample the paths with spin-isospin dependent and spin-orbit interactions. We apply the method to the triton and alpha particle using both local chiral interactions with next-to-next-to-leading-order %(N$^2$LO) and the Argonne interactions. For operators, like the total energy, that commute with the Hamiltonian, our results agree with Green's function Monte Carlo and auxiliary field diffusion Monte Carlo calculations. For operators that do not commute with the Hamiltonian and for Euclidean response functions, the path-integral formulation allows straightforward calculation without forward walking or the increased variance typical of diffusion methods. We demonstrate this by calculating density distributions, root mean square radii, and Euclidean response functions for single-nucleon couplings.

Isobaric multiplet mass equation within nuclear density functional theory

We extend the nuclear density functional theory (DFT) by including proton–neutron mixing and contact isospin-symmetry-breaking (ISB) terms up to next-to-leading order. Within this formalism, we perform systematic study of the nuclear mirror and triplet displacement energies, or equivalently of the isobaric multiplet mass equation (IMME) coefficients. By comparing results with those obtained within the existing Green Function Monte Carlo (GFMC) calculations, we address the fundamental question of the physical origin of the ISB effects. This we achieve by analyzing separate contributions to IMME coefficients coming from the electromagnetic and nuclear ISB terms We show that the ISB DFT and GFMC results agree reasonably well, and that they describe experimental data with a comparable quality. Since the separate electromagnetic and nuclear ISB contributions also agree, we conclude that the beyond-mean-field electromagnetic effects may not play a dominant role in describing the ISB effects in finite nuclei.

Relativistic effects in ab initio electron-nucleus scattering

The electromagnetic responses obtained from Green's function Monte Carlo (GFMC) calculations are based on realistic treatments of nuclear interactions and currents. The main limitations of this method comes from its nonrelativistic nature and its computational cost, the latter hampering the direct evaluation of the inclusive cross sections as measured by experiments. We extend the applicability of GFMC in the quasielastic region to intermediate momentum transfers by performing the calculations in a reference frame that minimizes nucleon momenta. Additional relativistic effects in the kinematics are accounted for employing the two-fragment model. In addition, we developed a novel algorithm, based on the concept of first-kind scaling, to compute the inclusive electromagnetic cross section of $^4$He through an accurate and reliable interpolation of the response functions. A very good agreement is obtained between theoretical and experimental cross sections for a variety of kinematical setups. This offers a promising prospect for the data analysis of neutrino-oscillation experiments that requires an accurate description of nuclear dynamics in which relativistic effects are fully accounted for.

Light-Nuclei Spectra from Chiral Dynamics.

In recent years local chiral interactions have been derived and implemented in quantum MonteCarlo methods in order to test to what extent the chiral effective field theory framework impacts our knowledge of few- and many-body systems. In this Letter, we present Green's function MonteCarlo calculations of light nuclei based on the family of local two-body interactions presented by our group in a previous paper in conjunction with chiral three-body interactions fitted to bound- and scattering-state observables in the three-nucleon sector. These interactions include Δ intermediate states in their two-pion-exchange components. We obtain predictions for the energy levels and level ordering of nuclei in the mass range A=4-12, accurate to ≤2% of the binding energy, in very satisfactory agreement with experimental data.

Short-Range Correlations and the EMC Effect in Effective Field Theory.

We show that the empirical linear relation between the magnitude of the EMC effect in deep inelastic scattering on nuclei and the short-range correlation scaling factor a_{2} extracted from high-energy quasielastic scattering at x≥1 is a natural consequence of scale separation and derive the relationship using effective field theory. While the scaling factor a_{2} is a ratio of nuclear matrix elements that individually depend on the calculational scheme, we show that the ratio is independent of this choice. We perform Green's function MonteCarlo calculations with both chiral and Argonne-Urbana potentials to verify this and determine the scaling factors for light nuclei. The resulting values for ^{3}He and ^{4}He are in good agreement with experimental values. We also present results for ^{9}Be and ^{12}C extracted from variational MonteCarlo calculations.

Electromagnetic Response ofC12: A First-Principles Calculation

The longitudinal and transverse electromagnetic response functions of $^{12}$C are computed in a "first-principles" Green's function Monte Carlo calculation, based on realistic two- and three-nucleon interactions and associated one- and two-body currents. We find excellent agreement between theory and experiment and, in particular, no evidence for the quenching of measured versus calculated longitudinal response. This is further corroborated by a re-analysis of the Coulomb sum rule, in which the contributions from the low-lying $J^\pi\,$=$\, 2^+$, $0^+_2$ (Hoyle), and $4^+$ states in $^{12}$C are accounted for explicitly in evaluating the total inelastic strength.

Green’s Function Monte Carlo Calculations with Two- and Three-Nucleon Interactions from Chiral Effective Field Theory

I discuss our recent work on Green's function Monte Carlo (GFMC) calculations of light nuclei using local nucleon-nucleon interactions derived from chiral effective field theory (EFT) up to next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^2$LO). I present the natural extension of this work to include the consistent three-nucleon (3N) forces at the same order in the chiral expansion. I discuss our choice of observables to fit the two low-energy constants which enter in the 3N sector at N$^2$LO and present some results for light nuclei.

Charge-symmetry breaking forces and isospin mixing in8Be

We report Green's function Monte Carlo calculations of isospin-mixing (IM) matrix elements for the 2+, 1+, and 3+ T=0,1 pairs of states at 16--19 MeV excitation in 8Be. The realistic Argonne v18 (AV18) two-nucleon and Illinois-7 three-nucleon potentials are used to generate the nuclear wave functions. Contributions from the full electromagnetic interaction and strong class III charge-symmetry-breaking (CSB) components of the AV18 potential are evaluated. We also examine two theoretically more complete CSB potentials based on rho-omega mixing, tuned to give the same neutron-neutron scattering length as AV18. The contribution of these different CSB potentials to the 3H-3He, 7Li-7Be, and 8Li-8B isovector energy differences is evaluated and reasonable agreement with experiment is obtained. Finally, for the 8Be IM calculation we add the small class IV CSB terms coming from one-photon, one-pion, and one-rho exchange, as well as rho-omega mixing. The expectation values of the three CSB models vary by up to 20% in the isovector energy differences, but only by 10% or less in the IM matrix element. The total matrix element gives 85--90% of the experimental IM value of -145 keV for the 2+ doublet, with about two thirds coming from the Coulomb interaction. We also report the IM matrix element to the first 2+ state at 3 MeV excitation, which is the final state for various tests of the Standard Model for beta-decay.

Equivalence Principle and Bound Kinetic Energy

We consider the role of the internal kinetic energy of bound systems of matter in tests of the Einstein equivalence principle. Using the gravitational sector of the standard model extension, we show that stringent limits on equivalence principle violations in antimatter can be indirectly obtained from tests using bound systems of normal matter. We estimate the bound kinetic energy of nucleons in a range of light atomic species using Green's function Monte Carlo calculations, and for heavier species using a Woods-Saxon model. We survey the sensitivities of existing and planned experimental tests of the equivalence principle, and report new constraints at the level of between a few parts in 10(6) and parts in 10(8) on violations of the equivalence principle for matter and antimatter.

Recoil proton tagged knockout reaction for 8He

We report for the first time the discrimination of the core fragment knockout and valence nucleon knockout reaction mechanisms at medium energy range, by the use of the recoil proton tagging technique. Intense 8He beams at 82.3 MeV/u were supplied by the RIPS beam line at RIKEN, and impinged on both hydrogen and carbon targets. Recoil protons were detected in coincidence with the forward moving core fragments and neutrons. The core fragment knockout mechanism is identified through the polar angle correlation and checked by various kinematics relations. This mechanism may be used to extract the cluster structure information of unstable nuclei. On the other hand, with the selection of the tagged valence nucleon knockout mechanism, a narrower peak of 7He ground state is obtained. The extracted neutron spectroscopic factor Sn=0.512(18) is relatively smaller than the no-tagged one, and is in good agreement with the prediction of ab initio Greenʼs function Monte Carlo calculations.

Lattice EFT calculation of thermal properties of low-density neutron matter

Thermal properties of low-density neutron matter are investigated by lattice calculation with nuclear effective field theory without pions up to the next-to-leading order. The 1S0 pairing gap is extracted near zero temperature at low densities. We find that the pairing gap is smaller than the BCS approximation with the conventional NN potentials, but not as small as those by various many-body calculations beyond BCS approximation. Our result is consistent with the recent Green's Function Monte Carlo calculation within the statistical errors. The critical temperature of the normal-to-superfluid phase transition and the pairing temperature scale are also extracted at low densities, and the phase diagram is given. We find that the physics of low-density neutron matter is clearly identified as being BCS-BEC crossover.

Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of spectroscopic overlaps inA⩽7nuclei

We present Green's function Monte Carlo calculations of spectroscopic overlaps for $A\ensuremath{\leqslant}7$ nuclei. The realistic Argonne ${v}_{18}$ two-nucleon and Illinois-7 three-nucleon interactions are used to generate the nuclear states. The overlap matrix elements are extrapolated from mixed estimates between variational Monte Carlo and Green's function Monte Carlo wave functions. The overlap functions are used to obtain spectroscopic factors and asymptotic normalization coefficients, and they can serve as an input for reaction calculations.

Effective 3-Body Interaction for Mean-Field and Density-Functional Theory

Density functionals for nuclei usually include an effective 3-body interaction that depends on a fractional power of the density. Using insights from the many-body theory of the low-density two-component Fermi gas, we consider a new, nonlocal, form for the energy functional that is consistent with the Fock-space representation of interaction operators. In particular, there is a unique spatially nonlocal generalization of the contact form of the interaction that preserves the ρ(7/3) density dependence required by the many-body theory. We calculate the ground-state energies for particles in a harmonic trap by using the nonlocal induced 3-body interaction and compare them to numerically accurate Green's function Monte Carlo calculations. Using no free parameters, we find that a nonlocality in the space domain provides a better description of the weak-coupling regime than the local-density approximation.

Precise Electromagnetic Tests ofAb InitioCalculations of Light Nuclei: States inBe10

In order to test ab initio calculations of light nuclei, we have remeasured lifetimes in 10Be using the Doppler shift attenuation method (DSAM) following the 7Li(7Li,alpha)10Be reaction at 8 and 10 MeV. The new experiments significantly reduce systematic uncertainties in the DSAM technique. The J(pi) = 2(1)(+) state at 3.37 MeV has tau = 205 +/- (5)(stat) +/- (7)(sys) fs corresponding to a B(E2 down) of 9.2(3)e(2) fm(4) in broad agreement with many calculations. The J(pi) = 2(2)(+) state at 5.96 MeV was found to have a B(E2 down) of 0.11(2)e(2) fm(4) and provides a more discriminating test of nuclear models. New Green's function Monte Carlo calculations for these states and transitions with a number of Hamiltonians are also reported and compared to experiment.

Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of magnetic moments andM1transitions inA⩽7nuclei including meson-exchange currents

Green's function Monte Carlo calculations of magnetic moments and M1 transitions including two-body meson-exchange current (MEC) contributions are reported for A<=7 nuclei. The realistic Argonne v18 two-nucleon and Illinois-2 three-nucleon potentials are used to generate the nuclear wave functions. The two-body meson-exchange operators are constructed to satisfy the continuity equation with the Argonne v18 potential. The MEC contributions increase the A=3,7 isovector magnetic moments by 16% and the A=6,7 M1 transition rates by 17--34%, bringing them into very good agreement with the experimental data.

Mott transition in bosonic systems: Insights from the variational approach

We study the Mott transition occurring for bosonic Hubbard models in one, two, and three spatial dimensions by means of a variational wave function benchmarked by Green's function Monte Carlo calculations. We show that a very accurate variational wave function, which is constructed by applying a long-range Jastrow factor to the noninteracting boson ground state, can describe the superfluid-insulator transition in any dimensionality. Moreover, by mapping the quantum averages over such a wave function into the partition function of a classical model, important insights into the insulating phase are uncovered. Finally, the evidence in favor of anomalous scenarios for the Mott transition in two dimensions is reported whenever additional long-range repulsive interactions are added to the Hamiltonian.

Nonlinear Schrödinger equation for a superfluid Fermi gas in the BCS-BEC crossover

We introduce a quasi-analytic nonlinear Schr\odinger equation with beyond mean-field corrections to describe the dynamics of a zero-temperature dilute superfluid Fermi gas in the crossover from the weak-coupling Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) regime, where $k_F|a| \ll 1$ with $a$ the s-wave scattering length and $k_F$ the Fermi momentum, through the unitarity limit, $k_Fa \to \pm \infty$, to the Bose regime where $k_Fa >0$. The energy of our model is parametrized using the known asymptotic behavior in the BCS, Bose, and the unitarity limits and is in excellent agreement with accurate Green function Monte Carlo calculations. The model generates good results for frequencies of collective breathing oscillation of a trapped Fermi superfluid.

Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of electroweak transition matrix elements inA=6,7nuclei

Green's function Monte Carlo (GFMC) calculations of magnetic dipole, electric quadrupole, Fermi, and Gamow-Teller transition matrix elements are reported for $A=6,7$ nuclei. The matrix elements are extrapolated from mixed estimates that bracket the relevant electroweak operator between variational Monte Carlo (VMC) and GFMC propagated wave functions. Because they are off-diagonal terms, two mixed estimates are required for each transition, with a VMC initial (final) state paired with a GFMC final (initial) state. The realistic Argonne ${v}_{18}$ two-nucleon and Illinois-2 three-nucleon interactions are used to generate the nuclear states. In most cases we find good agreement with experimental data.

Auxiliary Field Diffusion Monte Carlo Calculation of Nuclei withA≤40with Tensor Interactions

We calculate the ground-state energy of (4)He, (8)He, (16)O, and (40)Ca using the auxiliary field diffusion Monte Carlo method in the fixed-phase approximation and the Argonne v(6)' interaction which includes a tensor force. Comparison of our light nuclei results to those of Green's function Monte Carlo calculations shows the accuracy of our method for both open and closed-shell nuclei. We also apply it to (16)O and (40)Ca to show that quantum Monte Carlo methods are now applicable to larger nuclei.
