Significance of navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation and tractography to preserve motor function in patients undergoing surgery for motor eloquent gliomas

Resection of gliomas in or close to motor areas is at high risk for morbidity and development of surgery-related deficits. Navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (nTMS) including nTMS-based tractography is suitable for presurgical planning and risk assessment. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of postoperative motor status and the spatial relation to motor eloquent brain tissue in order to increase the understanding of postoperative motor deficits.Patient data, nTMS examinations and imaging studies were retrospectively reviewed, corticospinal tracts (CST) were reconstructed with two different approaches of nTMS-based seeding. Postoperative imaging and nTMS-augmented preoperative imaging were merged to identify the relation between motor positive cortical and subcortical areas and the resection cavity.38 tumor surgeries were performed in 36 glioma patients (28.9% female) aged 55.1 ± 13.8 years. Mean distance between the CST and the lesion was 6.9 ± 5.1 mm at 75% of the patient-individual fractional anisotropy threshold and median tumor volume reduction was 97.7 ± 11.6%. The positive predictive value for permanent deficits after resection of nTMS positive areas was 66.7% and the corresponding negative predictive value was 90.6%. Distances between the resection cavity and the CST were higher in patients with postoperative stable motor function. Extent of resection and distance between resection cavity and CST correlated well.The present study strongly supports preoperative nTMS as an important surgical tool for preserving motor function in glioma patients at risk.

Differential contribution of language and executive functioning to verbal fluency performance in glioma patients.

Glioma patients often suffer from deficits in language and executive functioning. Performance in verbal fluency (generating words within one minute according to a semantic category-category fluency, or given letter-letter fluency) is typically impaired in this patient group. While both language and executive functioning play a role in verbal fluency, the relative contribution of both domains remains unclear. We aim to retrospectively investigate glioma patients' performance on verbal and nonverbal fluency and to explore the influence of language and executive functioning on verbal fluency. Sixty-nine adults with gliomas in eloquent areas underwent a neuropsychological test battery (verbal fluency, nonverbal fluency, language, and executive functioning tests) before surgery (T1) and a subgroup of 31 patients also at three (T2) and twelve months (T3) after surgery. Preoperatively, patients were impaired in all verbal fluency tasks and dissociations were found based on tumour location. In contrast, nonverbal fluency was intact. Different language and executive functioning tests predicted performance on category fluency animals and letter fluency, while no significant predictors for category fluency professions were found. The longitudinal results indicated that category fluency professions deteriorated after surgery (T1-T2, T1-T3) and that nonverbal fluency improved after surgery (T1-T3, T2-T3). Verbal fluency performance can provide information on different possible underlying deficits in language and executive functioning in glioma patients, depending on verbal fluency task selection. Efficient task (order) selection can be based on complexity. Category fluency professions can be selected to detect more permanent long-term deficits.

A timeline of cognitive functioning in glioma patients who undergo awake brain tumor surgery

BackgroundThe purpose of awake brain tumor surgery is to maximize the resection of the tumor and to minimize the risk of neurological and cognitive impairments. The aim of this study is to gain understanding of the development of possible postoperative cognitive deficits after awake brain tumor surgery in patients with suspected gliomas, by comparing preoperative, early postoperative, and late postoperative functioning. A more detailed timeline will be helpful in informing candidates for surgery about what to expect regarding their cognitive functioning.MethodsThirty-seven patients were included in this study. Cognitive functioning was measured by means of a broad cognitive screener preoperatively, days after surgery and months after surgery in patients who underwent awake brain tumor surgery with cognitive monitoring. The cognitive screener included tests for object naming, reading, attention span, working memory, inhibition, inhibition/switching, and visuoperception. We performed a Friedman ANOVA to analyze on group level.ResultsOverall, no significant differences were found between preoperative cognitive functioning, early postoperative cognitive functioning, and late postoperative cognitive functioning, except for performances on the inhibition task. Directly after surgery, patients were significantly slower on this task. However, in the following months after surgery, they returned to their preoperative level.ConclusionThe timeline of cognitive functioning after awake tumor surgery appeared overall stable in the early and late postoperative phase, except for inhibition, which is more difficult in the first days after awake brain tumor surgery. This more detailed timeline of cognitive functioning, in combination with future research, can possibly be contributing in informing patients and caregivers what to expect after awake brain tumor surgery.

The longitudinal relation between executive functioning and multilayer network topology in glioma patients.

Many patients with glioma, primary brain tumors, suffer from poorly understood executive functioning deficits before and/or after tumor resection. We aimed to test whether frontoparietal network centrality of multilayer networks, allowing for integration across multiple frequencies, relates to and predicts executive functioning in glioma. Patients with glioma (n = 37) underwent resting-state magnetoencephalography and neuropsychological tests assessing word fluency, inhibition, and set shifting before (T1) and one year after tumor resection (T2). We constructed binary multilayer networks comprising six layers, with each layer representing frequency-specific functional connectivity between source-localized time series of 78 cortical regions. Average frontoparietal network multilayer eigenvector centrality, a measure for network integration, was calculated at both time points. Regression analyses were used to investigate associations with executive functioning. At T1, lower multilayer integration (p = 0.017) and epilepsy (p = 0.006) associated with poorer set shifting (adj. R2 = 0.269). Decreasing multilayer integration (p = 0.022) and not undergoing chemotherapy at T2 (p = 0.004) related to deteriorating set shifting over time (adj. R2 = 0.283). No significant associations were found for word fluency or inhibition, nor did T1 multilayer integration predict changes in executive functioning. As expected, our results establish multilayer integration of the frontoparietal network as a cross-sectional and longitudinal correlate of executive functioning in glioma patients. However, multilayer integration did not predict postoperative changes in executive functioning, which together with the fact that this correlate is also found in health and other diseases, limits its specific clinical relevance in glioma.

NCOG-17. THE CROSS-SECTIONAL AND LONGITUDINAL ASSOCIATION BETWEEN EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING AND MULTILAYER CENTRALITY OF THE FRONTOPARIETAL NETWORK IN GLIOMA PATIENTS

Abstract BACKGROUND Many patients with glioma suffer from poorly understood executive functioning deficits before and/or after tumor resection. In the past decade, it has become increasingly clear that there is a complex interplay between glioma and both local and global functional activity and connectivity. Moreover, multilayer network integration of the frontoparietal network across multiple modalities has recently been found to explain individual differences in executive functioning in healthy subjects. OBJECTIVE To test whether multilayer frontoparietal network integration relates to individual differences in executive functioning before and after glioma resection. METHODS Patients with glioma (n = 37) underwent neuropsychological tests assessing word fluency, inhibition, and set shifting as components of executive functioning, and resting-state magnetoencephalography at T1 (at diagnosis, before resection) and T2 (1 year after resection). Neuroplasticity of Glioma Patients: Brain Structure and Topological Network.

Glioma is the most common primary malignant brain tumor in adults. It accounts for about 75% of such tumors and occurs more commonly in men. The incidence rate has been increasing in the past 30 years. Moreover, the 5-year overall survival rate of glioma patients is < 35%. Different locations, grades, and molecular characteristics of gliomas can lead to different behavioral deficits and prognosis, which are closely related to patients' quality of life and associated with neuroplasticity. Some advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technologies can explore the neuroplasticity of structural, topological, biochemical metabolism, and related mechanisms, which may contribute to the improvement of prognosis and function in glioma patients. In this review, we summarized the studies conducted on structural and topological plasticity of glioma patients through different MRI technologies and discussed future research directions. Previous studies have found that glioma itself and related functional impairments can lead to structural and topological plasticity using multimodal MRI. However, neuroplasticity caused by highly heterogeneous gliomas is not fully understood, and should be further explored through multimodal MRI. In addition, the individualized prediction of functional prognosis of glioma patients from the functional level based on machine learning (ML) is promising. These approaches and the introduction of ML can further shed light on the neuroplasticity and related mechanism of the brain, which will be helpful for management of glioma patients.

Resting-State Electroencephalography Functional Connectivity Networks Relate to Pre- and Postoperative Language Functioning in Low-Grade Glioma and Meningioma Patients.

Introduction: Preservation of language functioning in patients undergoing brain tumor surgery is essential because language impairments negatively impact the quality of life. Brain tumor patients have alterations in functional connectivity (FC), the extent to which brain areas functionally interact. We studied FC networks in relation to language functioning in glioma and meningioma patients.Method: Patients with a low-grade glioma (N = 15) or meningioma (N = 10) infiltrating into/pressing on the language-dominant hemisphere underwent extensive language testing before and 1 year after surgery. Resting-state EEG was registered preoperatively, postoperatively (glioma patients only), and once in healthy individuals. After analyzing FC in theta and alpha frequency bands, weighted networks and Minimum Spanning Trees were quantified by various network measures.Results: Pre-operative FC network characteristics did not differ between glioma patients and healthy individuals. However, hub presence and higher local and global FC are associated with poorer language functioning before surgery in glioma patients and predict worse language performance at 1 year after surgery. For meningioma patients, a greater small worldness was related to worse language performance and hub presence; better average clustering and global integration were predictive of worse outcome on language function 1 year after surgery. The average eccentricity, diameter and tree hierarchy seem to be the network metrics with the more pronounced relation to language performance.Discussion: In this exploratory study, we demonstrated that preoperative FC networks are informative for pre- and postoperative language functioning in glioma patients and to a lesser extent in meningioma patients.

Physical functional capacity of patients with glioma prior to adjuvant radiation: preliminary descriptive study.

Few studies have assessed physical functioning in glioma patients with grade II, III, and IV glioma prior to undergoing adjuvant radiation with or without chemotherapy. The aim of this study was to describe the baseline physical functioning capacity of patients with glioma prior to adjuvant therapy compared to validated cutoffs required to maintain independence. This study is a cross-sectional study that recruited patients with grade II, III, and IV glioma (n = 33) undergoing adjuvant radiation with or without chemotherapy. The six-minute walk, thirty-second sit-to-stand, and timed "Up & Go" assessments were used to describe baseline physical functioning. Perceived quality of life from the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) quality of life questionnaire (QLQ-C30) version 3.0 was used to quantify the quality of life. Mean distance walked in the six-minute walk test was 416.2 m (SD 137.6 m) with a mean of 12.2 stands (SD 3.4 stands) achieved during the thirty-second sit-to-stand. Median time to complete the timed "Up & Go" assessment was 7 s (interquartile range: 3 s). One-sample t tests suggest walking distance and chair stands were significantly lower than cutoff criterions to maintain independent living, t(32) = -5.96, P < .001, bias-corrected accelerated 95% CI [370.7-460.4], and t(32) = -4.60, P < .01, bias-corrected accelerated 95% CI [11.0-13.4], respectively. Wilcoxon signed-rank test identified significantly shorter median time taken to complete the timed "Up & Go" test compared to the cutoff criterion (z = -4.43, n = 33, P < .01). This study suggests glioma patient's aerobic endurance and lower limb strength are below criterion cutoffs recommended to maintain independent living. Timed "Up & Go" scores did not exceed the criterion cutoff, indicating respectable levels of mobility.

Dose-dependent volume loss in subcortical deep grey matter structures after cranial radiotherapy

Background and purposeThe relation between radiotherapy (RT) dose to the brain and morphological changes in healthy tissue has seen recent increased interest. There already is evidence for changes in the cerebral cortex and white matter, as well as selected subcortical grey matter (GM) structures. We studied this relation in all deep GM structures, to help understand the aetiology of post-RT neurocognitive symptoms. Materials and methodsWe selected 31 patients treated with RT for grade II-IV glioma. Pre-RT and 1 year post-RT 3D T1-weighted MRIs were automatically segmented, and the changes in volume of the following structures were assessed: amygdala, nucleus accumbens, caudate nucleus, hippocampus, globus pallidus, putamen, and thalamus. The volumetric changes were related to the mean RT dose received by each structure. Hippocampal volumes were entered into a population-based nomogram to estimate hippocampal age. ResultsA significant relation between RT dose and volume loss was seen in all examined structures, except the caudate nucleus. The volume loss rates ranged from 0.16 to 1.37%/Gy, corresponding to 4.9–41.2% per 30 Gy. Hippocampal age, as derived from the nomogram, was seen to increase by a median of 11 years. ConclusionAlmost all subcortical GM structures are susceptible to radiation-induced volume loss, with higher volume loss being observed with increasing dose. Volume loss of these structures is associated with neurological deterioration, including cognitive decline, in neurodegenerative diseases. To support a causal relationship between radiation-induced deep GM loss and neurocognitive functioning in glioma patients, future studies are needed that directly correlate volumetrics to clinical outcomes.

Impaired neurocognitive function in glioma patients: from pathophysiology to novel intervention strategies

This review succinctly summarizes the recent literature regarding etiological contributors to impaired neurocognitive function (NCF) in adult patients with glioma. A brief overview of intervention and prevention strategies is also provided. A majority of patients with glioma exhibit NCF deficits, most frequently in memory and executive functioning. Impairments are often disabling and associated with reduced quality of life and survival. Cause is multifactorial and includes the tumour itself, treatments received and associated comorbidities. Although modern techniques such as brain mapping, dosing modifications and prophylactic medication aim to improve the NCF outcomes following neurosurgical resection and radiation therapy, a sizeable proportion of patients continue to evidence treatment-related NCF declines related to adverse effects to both local and distributed cerebral networks. Numerous patient and tumour characteristics, including genetic markers and sociodemographic factors, influence the pattern and severity of NCF impairment. Some rehabilitative and pharmacologic approaches show promise in mitigating NCF impairment in this population, though benefits are somewhat modest and larger scale intervention studies are needed. Research regarding NCF in patients with glioma has dramatically proliferated, providing insights into the mechanisms underlying impaired NCF and pointing to potential interventions, though further work is needed.

Longitudinal study of cognitive function in glioma patients treated with modern radiotherapy techniques and standard chemotherapy

Introduction: Cognitive function is an important outcome measure in patients with brain tumor, providing information about the patient’s clinical situation, treatment effects and possible progressive disease. The aim of this longitudinal study was to evaluate effects of the currently used radiation and chemotherapy treatment on cognitive function and to investigate associations between cognitive function at baseline and progression as well as overall survival.Methods: 32 patients newly diagnosed with malignant glioma were evaluated at baseline with CNS Vital Signs (CNS-VS), a computerized standardized neuropsychological test battery, prior to arc-based radiotherapy and concomitant chemotherapy with Temozolomide. CNS-VS measures the cognitive functions known to be affected in patients with brain tumor, covering nine cognitive domains. Follow-up cognitive evaluations were performed in 26 patients after 3.5 months and in 13 patients 1 year after treatment start.Results: Overall cognitive scores were lower in the studied patient cohort at baseline compared to standardized domain scores. At 3.5 months follow-up cognitive functioning was slightly decreased, but only in 1/9 cognitive domains – visual memory – where significant changes were found compared to baseline test results. Similarly, at 12 months follow-up no significant changes in cognitive test results were seen compared to baseline examination, except for a decrease in the visual memory domain. In relation to early progression, the most significant cognitive deficits were dysfunctional visual memory and low executive functioning at baseline. Low executive function at baseline correlated most significantly with shorter overall survival.Conclusion: The present study suggests that the currently used arc-based radiotherapy and chemotherapy might affect cognitive function less negatively than previously described during treatment and in the first year after treatment in malignant glioma patients. In general, a high cognitive test score at baseline was associated with longer time to progression and with longer survival.

A pilot randomized controlled trial of exercise to improve cognitive performance in patients with stable glioma: a proof of concept.

BackgroundPatients with glioma often suffer from cognitive deficits. Physical exercise has been effective in ameliorating cognitive deficits in older adults and neurological patients. This pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) explored the possible impact of an exercise intervention, designed to improve cognitive functioning in glioma patients, regarding cognitive test performance and patient-reported outcomes (PROs).MethodsThirty-four clinically stable patients with World Health Organization grades II/III glioma were randomized to a home-based remotely coached exercise group or an active control group. Patients exercised 3 times per week for 20–45 minutes, with moderate to vigorous intensity, during 6 months. At baseline and immediate follow-up, cognitive performance and PROs were assessed with neuropsychological tests and questionnaires, respectively. Linear regression analyses were used to estimate effect sizes of potential between-group differences in cognitive performance and PROs at 6 months.ResultsThe exercise group (n = 21) had small- to medium-sized better follow-up scores than the control group (n = 11) on several measures of attention and information processing speed, verbal memory, and executive function, whereas the control group showed a slightly better score on a measure of sustained selective attention. The exercise group also demonstrated small- to medium-sized better outcomes on measures of self-reported cognitive symptoms, fatigue, sleep, mood, and mental health–related quality of life.ConclusionsThis small exploratory RCT in glioma patients provides a proof of concept with respect to improvement of cognitive functioning and PROs after aerobic exercise, and warrants larger exercise trials in brain tumor patients.

Cognitive functioning in glioma patients is related to functional connectivity measures of the non-tumoural hemisphere.

Previous studies have shown that cognitive functioning in patients with brain tumour is associated with the functional network characteristics of specific resting‐state networks or with whole‐brain network characteristics. These studies, however, did not acknowledge the functional contribution of areas in the contralesional, non‐tumoural hemisphere, even though these healthy remote areas likely play a critical role in compensating for the loss of function in damaged tissue. In the current study, we examined whether there is an association between cognitive performance and functional network features of the contralesional hemisphere of patients with glioma. We found that local efficiency of the contralesional hemisphere was associated with performance on the reaction time domain, whereas contralesional assortativity was associated with complex attention and cognitive flexibility scores. Our results suggest that a less segregated organization of the contralesional hemisphere is associated with better reaction time scores, whereas a better spread of information over the contralesional hemisphere through mutually interconnected contralesional hubs is associated with better cognitive flexibility and better complex attention scores. These findings urge researchers to recognize the functional contribution of remote, undamaged regions and to focus more on the graph metrics of the contralesional hemisphere in the search for predictors of cognitive functioning in patients with brain tumour.

BDNF, COMT, and DRD2 polymorphisms and ability to return to work in adult patients with low- and high-grade glioma.

Cognitive and language dysfunction is common among patients with glioma and has a significant impact on survival and health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Little is known about the factors that make individual patients more or less susceptible to the cognitive sequelae of the disease. A better understanding of the individual and population characteristics related to cognitive function in glioma patients is required to appropriately stratify patients, prognosticate, and develop more efficacious treatment regimens. There is evidence that allelic variation among genes involved in neurotransmission and synaptic plasticity are related to neurocognitive performance in states of health and neurologic disease. We studied the association of single-nucleotide polymorphism variations in brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF, rs6265), dopamine receptor 2 (DRD2, rs1076560), and catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT, rs4680) with neurocognitive function and ability to return to work in glioma patients at diagnosis and at 3 months. We developed a functional score based on the number of high-performance alleles that correlates with the capacity for patients to return to work. Patients with higher-performing alleles have better scores on neurocognitive testing with the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status and Stroop test, but not the Trail Making Test. A better understanding of the genetic contributors to neurocognitive performance in glioma patients and capacity for functional recovery is necessary to develop improved treatment strategies based on patient-specific factors.

Understanding cognitive functioning in glioma patients: The relevance of IDH-mutation status and functional connectivity.

IntroductionCognitive deficits occur frequently in diffuse glioma patients, but are limitedly understood. An important marker for survival in these patients is isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) mutation (IDH‐mut). Patients with IDH‐mut glioma have a better prognosis but more often suffer from epilepsy than patients with IDH‐wildtype (IDH‐wt) glioma, who are generally older and more often have cognitive deficits. We investigated whether global brain functional connectivity differs between patients with IDH‐mut and IDH‐wt glioma, and whether this measure reflects variations in cognitive functioning in these subpopulations beyond the associated differences in age and presence of epilepsy.MethodsWe recorded magnetoencephalography and tested cognitive functioning in 54 diffuse glioma patients (31 IDH‐mut, 23 IDH‐wt). Global functional connectivity between 78 atlas regions spanning the entire cortex was calculated in two frequency bands (theta and alpha). Group differences in global functional connectivity were tested, as was their association with cognitive functioning, controlling for age, education, and presence of epilepsy.ResultsPatients with IDH‐wt glioma had lower functional connectivity in the alpha band than patients with IDH‐mut glioma (p = 0.040, corrected for age and presence of epilepsy). Lower alpha band functional connectivity was associated with poorer cognitive performance (p < 0.034), corrected for age, education, and presence of epilepsy.ConclusionGlobal functional connectivity is lower in patients with IDH‐wt diffuse glioma compared to patients with IDH‐mut diffuse glioma. Moreover, having lower functional alpha connectivity relates to poorer cognitive performance in patients with diffuse glioma, regardless of age, education, and presence of epilepsy.

Cortical language function in glioma patients as measured by nrTMS

Background: The localization of brain function is often altered in glioma patients due to tumor growth. This must be considered for the language network, whose localization is disseminated over the perisylvian area. Moreover, cortical language function is highly individualized and frequently changes due to functional reorganization. The present study aims to provide a probability map for the cortical localization of language function in glioma patients as visualized by a new protocol for the fusion of language maps.

Background: Cortical functional reorganization has been shown in glioma patients by direct cortical stimulation (DCS) during awake craniotomy. This invasive option for repeated mapping is only available in case of tumor recurrence and after decision for a second surgery. Navigated repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (nrTMS) has shown a high correlation to the results of DCS during awake craniotomy for language-negative regions (LNR). The present study aims to examine the cortical functional reorganization in glioma patients.

Language-Eloquent White Matter Pathway Tractography and the Course of Language Function in Glioma Patients.

Object: As various recent studies show, damage to white matter pathways leads to permanent functional deficits in a high percentage of patients. Particularly the subcortical language network is complex, and its visualization has a tremendous relevance for neurosurgeons. This pilot study aims to correlate language-eloquent white matter pathways with the course of language function after the resection of left-sided perisylvian gliomas.Methods: We included 10 patients who underwent resection of highly language-eloquent high- (9 pts) and low-grade gliomas (1 pts). We performed navigated repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (nrTMS)-based tractography via diffusion tensor imaging fiber trackings (DTI FT) preoperatively (PRE-1), postoperatively (POST-1), and at long-term follow up or tumor recurrence (PRE-2). We separately tracked the inferior fronto-occipital fascicle (IFOF), the frontal aslant tract (FAT), and the superior longitudinal (SLF), and arcuate fascicle (AF), and correlated the amount of visualized fibers to the patients' language function at each date.Results: The changes of nrTMS-based DTI FTs of single white matter pathways correlated with the according status of language function for any of the pathways in 80% of patients and in 19 of 30 (63%) single pathway comparisons between PRE-1 and POST-1. Between POST-1 and PRE-2 the nrTMS-based DTI FTs correlated with the status of language function for any of the pathways in all patients and in 24 of 30 (80%) single pathway comparisons. Single FT results correlated with the according status of language function at POST-1 in 60, 70, and 60% of cases, and with the according status of language function at PRE-2 in 60, 90, and 90% of cases for the tracking of the IFOF, FAT, and SLF/AF, respectively.Conclusion: By the present results we were able to show that nrTMS-based DTI FT of the IFOF, FAT, and SLF/AF mainly correlates with the according status of language function preoperatively, postoperatively, and at long-term follow up after the resection of left-sided perisylvian gliomas.

Neurocognitive functioning is associated with functional independence in newly diagnosed patients with temporal lobe glioma.

Cancer and treatment-related neurocognitive dysfunction has the potential to significantly disrupt the lives of survivors. While neurocognitive functioning is known to predict aspects of patient-reported quality of life in individuals with glioma, little is known regarding the association between neurocognitive functioning and clinician-rated functional independence. Newly diagnosed patients with glioma in the left (n = 73; 49% glioblastoma) or right (n = 30; 57% glioblastoma) temporal lobe completed comprehensive neuropsychological testing. Clinicians rated patient functional independence using the Functional Independence Measure (FIM) and Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) scale. Correlational and regression analyses were conducted to determine relationships between neurocognitive functioning and functional independence. Tests of verbal learning, executive function, and language comprehension were moderately to strongly associated with clinician-rated functional independence, particularly for items pertaining to need for assistance with memory, problem-solving, and language functions. Stepwise linear regression showed that tests of verbal learning, executive functioning, and language comprehension predicted FIM ratings, together accounting for 40% of variance (P < .001). A test of executive functioning also predicted KPS scores and accounted for 19% of variance (P < .001). In patients with newly diagnosed temporal lobe glioma, neurocognitive functioning is associated with functional independence. Verbal learning, executive functioning, and language comprehension demonstrated the strongest associations across both measures of functional independence. These findings provide support for the ecological validity of neuropsychological assessment by demonstrating the real-world clinical significance of objectively assessed neurocognitive functioning in glioma patients.
