A truncated Davidson method for the efficient "chemically accurate" calculation of full configuration interaction wavefunctions without any large matrix diagonalization.

This work develops and illustrates a new method of calculating "chemically accurate" electronic wavefunctions (and energies) via a truncated full configuration interaction (CI) procedure, which arguably circumvents the large matrix diagonalization that is the core problem of full CI and is also central to modern selective CI approaches. This is accomplished simply by following the standard/ubiquitous Davidson method in its "direct" form-wherein, in each iteration, the electronic Hamiltonian operator is applied directly in second quantization to the Ritz vector/wavefunction from the prior iteration-except that (in this work) only a small portion of the resultant expansion vector is actually even computed (through the application of only a similarly small portion of the Hamiltonian). Specifically, at each iteration of this truncated Davidson approach, the new expansion vector is taken to be twice as large as that from the prior iteration. In this manner, a small set of highly truncated expansion vectors (say 10-30) of increasing precision is incrementally constructed, forming a small subspace within which diagonalization of the Hamiltonian yields clear, consistent, and monotonically variational convergence to the approximate full CI limit. The good efficiency in which convergence to the level of chemical accuracy (1.6 mhartree) is achieved suggests, at least for the demonstrated problem sizes-Hilbert spaces of 1018 and wavefunctions of 108 determinants-that this truncated Davidson methodology can serve as a replacement of standard CI and complete-active space approaches in circumstances where only a few chemically significant digits of accuracy are required and/or meaningful in view of ever-present basis set limitations.

Accurate full configuration interaction correlation energy estimates for five- and six-membered rings.

Following our recent work on the benzene molecule [P.-F. Loos, Y. Damour, and A. Scemama, J. Chem. Phys. 153, 176101 (2020)], motivated by the blind challenge of Eriksen et al. [J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 11, 8922 (2020)] on the same system, we report accurate full configuration interaction (FCI) frozen-core correlation energy estimates for 12 five- and six-membered ring molecules (cyclopentadiene, furan, imidazole, pyrrole, thiophene, benzene, pyrazine, pyridazine, pyridine, pyrimidine, s-tetrazine, and s-triazine) in the standard correlation-consistent double-ζ Dunning basis set (cc-pVDZ). Our FCI correlation energy estimates, with an estimated error smaller than 1 millihartree, are based on energetically optimized-orbital selected configuration interaction calculations performed with the configuration interaction using a perturbative selection made iteratively algorithm. Having at our disposal these accurate reference energies, the respective performance and convergence properties of several popular and widely used families of single-reference quantum chemistry methods are investigated. In particular, we study the convergence properties of (i) the Møller-Plesset perturbation series up to fifth-order (MP2, MP3, MP4, and MP5), (ii) the iterative approximate coupled-cluster series CC2, CC3, and CC4, and (iii) the coupled-cluster series CCSD, CCSDT, and CCSDTQ. The performance of the ground-state gold standard CCSD(T) as well as the completely renormalized CC model, CR-CC(2,3), is also investigated. We show that MP4 provides an interesting accuracy/cost ratio, while MP5 systematically worsens the correlation energy estimates. In addition, CC3 outperforms CCSD(T) and CR-CC(2,3), as well as its more expensive parent CCSDT. A similar trend is observed for the methods including quadruple excitations, where the CC4 model is shown to be slightly more accurate than CCSDTQ, both methods providing correlation energies within 2 millihartree of the FCI limit.

Tailoring CIPSI Expansions for QMC Calculations of Electronic Excitations: The Case Study of Thiophene.

The perturbatively selected configuration interaction scheme (CIPSI) is particularly effective in constructing determinantal expansions for quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations with Jastrow–Slater wave functions: fast and smooth convergence of ground-state properties and balanced descriptions of ground and excited states of different symmetries have been reported. In particular, accurate excitation energies have been obtained by the pivotal requirement of using CIPSI expansions with similar second-order perturbation corrections for each state, that is, a similar estimated distance to the full configuration interaction limit. Here, we elaborate on the CIPSI selection criterion for excited states of the same symmetry as the ground state, generating expansions from a common orbital set. Using these expansions in QMC as determinantal components of Jastrow–Slater wave functions, we compute the lowest, bright excited state of thiophene, which is challenging due to its significant multireference character. The resulting vertical excitation energies are within 0.05 eV of the best theoretical estimates, already with expansions of only a few thousand determinants. Furthermore, we relax the ground- and excited-state structures following the corresponding root in variational Monte Carlo and obtain bond lengths that are accurate to better than 0.01 Å. Therefore, while the full treatment at the CIPSI level of this system is quite demanding, in QMC, we can compute high-quality excitation energies and excited-state structural parameters building on affordable CIPSI expansions with relatively few, well-chosen determinants.

Comparison of Many-Particle Representations for Selected Configuration Interaction: II. Numerical Benchmark Calculations

The present work is the second part in our three-part series on the comparison of many-particle representations for the selected configuration interaction (CI) method. In this work, we present benchmark calculations based on our selected CI program called the iterative configuration expansion (ICE) that is inspired by the CIPSI method of Malrieu and co-workers (MalrieuJ. Chem. Phys.1973, 58, ( (12), ), 5745−5759). We describe the main parameters that enter in this algorithm and perform benchmark calculations on a set of 21 small molecules and compare ground state energies with full configuration interaction (FCI) results (FCI21 test set). The focus is the comparison of the performance of three different types of many-particle basis functions (MPBFs): (1) individual Slater determinants (DETS), (2) individual spin-adapted configuration state functions (CSFs), and (3) all CSFs of a given total spin that can be generated from spatial configurations (CFGs). An analysis of the cost of the calculation in terms of the number of wavefunction parameters and the energy error is evaluated for the DET-, CFG-, and CSF-based ICE. The main differences for the three many-particle basis representations show up in the number of wavefunction parameters and the rate of convergence toward the FCI limit with the thresholds of the ICE. Next, we analyze the best way to extrapolate the ICE energies toward the FCI results as a function of the thresholds. The efficiency of the extrapolation is investigated relative to the FCI21 test set as well as near FCI calculations on three moderately sized hydrocarbon molecules CH4, C2H4, and C4H6. Finally, we comment on the size-inconsistency error for the three many-particle representations and compare it with the error in the total energy. The implication for selected CI implementations with any of the three many-particle representations is discussed.

Perspective on Kramers symmetry breaking and restoration in relativistic electronic structure methods for open-shell systems.

Without rigorous symmetry constraints, solutions to approximate electronic structure methods may artificially break symmetry. In the case of the relativistic electronic structure, if time-reversal symmetry is not enforced in calculations of molecules not subject to a magnetic field, it is possible to artificially break Kramers degeneracy in open shell systems. This leads to a description of excited states that may be qualitatively incorrect. Despite this, different electronic structure methods to incorporate correlation and excited states can partially restore Kramers degeneracy from a broken symmetry solution. For single-reference techniques, the inclusion of double and possibly triple excitations in the ground state provides much of the needed correction. Formally, however, this imbalanced treatment of the Kramers-paired spaces is a multi-reference problem, and so methods such as complete-active-space methods perform much better at recovering much of the correct symmetry by state averaging. Using multi-reference configuration interaction, any additional corrections can be obtained as the solution approaches the full configuration interaction limit. A recently proposed "Kramers contamination" value is also used to assess the magnitude of symmetry breaking.

Symplectic integration and physical interpretation of time-dependent coupled-cluster theory.

The formulation of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation in terms of coupled-cluster theory is outlined, with emphasis on the bivariational framework and its classical Hamiltonian structure. An indefinite inner product is introduced, inducing physical interpretation of coupled-cluster states in the form of transition probabilities, autocorrelation functions, and explicitly real values for observables, solving interpretation issues which are present in time-dependent coupled-cluster theory and in ground-state calculations of molecular systems under the influence of external magnetic fields. The problem of the numerical integration of the equations of motion is considered, and a critical evaluation of the standard fourth-order Runge-Kutta scheme and the symplectic Gauss integrator of variable order are given, including several illustrative numerical experiments. While the Gauss integrator is stable even for laser pulses well above the perturbation limit, our experiments indicate that a system-dependent upper limit exists for the external field strengths. Above this limit, time-dependent coupled-cluster calculations become very challenging numerically, even in the full configuration interaction limit. The source of these numerical instabilities is shown to be rapid increases of the amplitudes as ultrashort high-intensity laser pulses pump the system out of the ground state into states that are virtually orthogonal to the static Hartree-Fock reference determinant.

Excited States of Methylene, Polyenes, and Ozone from Heat-Bath Configuration Interaction.

The electronically excited states of methylene (CH2), ethylene (C2H4), butadiene (C4H6), hexatriene (C6H8), and ozone (O3) have long proven challenging due to their complex mixtures of static and dynamic correlations. The semistochastic heat-bath configuration interaction (SHCI) algorithm, which efficiently and systematically approaches the full configuration interaction (FCI) limit, is used to provide close approximations to the FCI energies in these systems. This article presents the largest FCI-level calculation to date on hexatriene, using a polarized double-ζ basis (ANO-L-pVDZ), which gives rise to a Hilbert space containing more than 1038 determinants. These calculations give vertical excitation energies of 5.58 and 5.59 eV, respectively, for the 21Ag and 11Bu states, showing that they are nearly degenerate. The same excitation energies in butadiene/ANO-L-pVDZ were found to be 6.58 and 6.45 eV. In addition to these benchmarks, our calculations strongly support the presence of a previously hypothesized ring-minimum species of ozone that lies 1.3 eV higher than the open-ring-minimum energy structure and is separated from it by a barrier of 1.11 eV.

Virtual Orbital Many-Body Expansions: A Possible Route towards the Full Configuration Interaction Limit.

It is demonstrated how full configuration interaction (FCI) results in extended basis sets may be obtained to within sub-kJ/mol accuracy by decomposing the energy in terms of many-body expansions in the virtual orbitals of the molecular system at hand. This extension of the FCI application range lends itself to two unique features of the current approach, namely, that the total energy calculation can be performed entirely within considerably reduced orbital subspaces and may be so by means of embarrassingly parallel programming. Facilitated by a rigorous and methodical screening protocol and further aided by expansion points different from the Hartree-Fock solution, all-electron numerical results are reported for H2O in polarized core-valence basis sets ranging from double-ζ (10 e, 28 o) to quadruple-ζ (10 e, 144 o) quality.

One-particle many-body Green's function theory: Algebraic recursive definitions, linked-diagram theorem, irreducible-diagram theorem, and general-order algorithms.

A thorough analytical and numerical characterization of the whole perturbation series of one-particle many-body Green's function (MBGF) theory is presented in a pedagogical manner. Three distinct but equivalent algebraic (first-quantized) recursive definitions of the perturbation series of the Green's function are derived, which can be combined with the well-known recursion for the self-energy. Six general-order algorithms of MBGF are developed, each implementing one of the three recursions, the ΔMPn method (where n is the perturbation order) [S. Hirata et al., J. Chem. Theory Comput. 11, 1595 (2015)], the automatic generation and interpretation of diagrams, or the numerical differentiation of the exact Green's function with a perturbation-scaled Hamiltonian. They all display the identical, nondivergent perturbation series except ΔMPn, which agrees with MBGF in the diagonal and frequency-independent approximations at 1≤n≤3 but converges at the full-configuration-interaction (FCI) limit at n=∞ (unless it diverges). Numerical data of the perturbation series are presented for Koopmans and non-Koopmans states to quantify the rate of convergence towards the FCI limit and the impact of the diagonal, frequency-independent, or ΔMPn approximation. The diagrammatic linkedness and thus size-consistency of the one-particle Green's function and self-energy are demonstrated at any perturbation order on the basis of the algebraic recursions in an entirely time-independent (frequency-domain) framework. The trimming of external lines in a one-particle Green's function to expose a self-energy diagram and the removal of reducible diagrams are also justified mathematically using the factorization theorem of Frantz and Mills. Equivalence of ΔMPn and MBGF in the diagonal and frequency-independent approximations at 1≤n≤3 is algebraically proven, also ascribing the differences at n = 4 to the so-called semi-reducible and linked-disconnected diagrams.

Estimating the intrinsic limit of the Feller-Peterson-Dixon composite approach when applied to adiabatic ionization potentials in atoms and small molecules

Benchmark adiabatic ionization potentials were obtained with the Feller-Peterson-Dixon (FPD) theoretical method for a collection of 48 atoms and small molecules. In previous studies, the FPD method demonstrated an ability to predict atomization energies (heats of formation) and electron affinities well within a 95% confidence level of ±1 kcal/mol. Large 1-particle expansions involving correlation consistent basis sets (up to aug-cc-pV8Z in many cases and aug-cc-pV9Z for some atoms) were chosen for the valence CCSD(T) starting point calculations. Despite their cost, these large basis sets were chosen in order to help minimize the residual basis set truncation error and reduce dependence on approximate basis set limit extrapolation formulas. The complementary n-particle expansion included higher order CCSDT, CCSDTQ, or CCSDTQ5 (coupled cluster theory with iterative triple, quadruple, and quintuple excitations) corrections. For all of the chemical systems examined here, it was also possible to either perform explicit full configuration interaction (CI) calculations or to otherwise estimate the full CI limit. Additionally, corrections associated with core/valence correlation, scalar relativity, anharmonic zero point vibrational energies, non-adiabatic effects, and other minor factors were considered. The root mean square deviation with respect to experiment for the ionization potentials was 0.21 kcal/mol (0.009 eV). The corresponding level of agreement for molecular enthalpies of formation was 0.37 kcal/mol and for electron affinities 0.20 kcal/mol. Similar good agreement with experiment was found in the case of molecular structures and harmonic frequencies. Overall, the combination of energetic, structural, and vibrational data (655 comparisons) reflects the consistent ability of the FPD method to achieve close agreement with experiment for small molecules using the level of theory applied in this study.

Convergence of coupled cluster perturbation theory.

The convergence of a recently proposed coupled cluster (CC) family of perturbation series [J. J. Eriksen et al., J. Chem. Phys. 140, 064108 (2014)], in which the energetic difference between two CC models-a low-level parent and a high-level target model-is expanded in orders of the Møller-Plesset (MP) fluctuation potential, is investigated for four prototypical closed-shell systems (Ne, singlet CH2, distorted HF, and F-) in standard and augmented basis sets. In these investigations, energy corrections of the various series have been calculated to high orders and their convergence radii have been determined by probing for possible front- and back-door intruder states, the existence of which would make the series divergent. In summary, we conclude how it is primarily the choice of the target state, and not the choice of the parent state, which ultimately governs the convergence behavior of a given series. For example, restricting the target state to, say, triple or quadruple excitations might remove intruders present in series which target the full configuration interaction limit, such as the standard MP series. Furthermore, we find that whereas a CC perturbation series might converge within standard correlation consistent basis sets, it may start to diverge whenever these become augmented by diffuse functions, similar to the MP case. However, unlike for the MP case, such potential divergences are not found to invalidate the practical use of the low-order corrections of the CC perturbation series.

Quantum Monte Carlo with reoptimised perturbatively selected configuration-interaction wave functions

ABSTRACTWe explore the use in quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) of trial wave functions consisting of a Jastrow factor multiplied by a truncated configuration-interaction (CI) expansion in Slater determinants obtained from a CI perturbatively selected iteratively (CIPSI) calculation. In the CIPSI algorithm, the CI expansion is iteratively enlarged by selecting the best determinants using the perturbation theory, which provides an optimal and automatic way of constructing truncated CI expansions approaching the full CI limit. We perform a systematic study of variational Monte Carlo (VMC) and fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) total energies of first-row atoms from B to Ne with different levels of optimisation of the parameters (Jastrow parameters, coefficients of the determinants, and orbital parameters) in these trial wave functions. The results show that the reoptimisation of the coefficients of the determinants in VMC (together with the Jastrow factor) leads to an important lowering of both VMC and DMC total energies, and to their monotonic convergence with the number of determinants. In addition, we show that the reoptimisation of the orbitals is also important in both VMC and DMC for the Be atom when using a large basis set. These reoptimised Jastrow-CIPSI wave functions appear as promising, systematically improvable trial wave functions for QMC calculations.

Seniority Number in Valence Bond Theory.

In this work, a hierarchy of valence bond (VB) methods based on the concept of seniority number, defined as the number of singly occupied orbitals in a determinant or an orbital configuration, is proposed and applied to the studies of the potential energy curves (PECs) of H8, N2, and C2 molecules. It is found that the seniority-based VB expansion converges more rapidly toward the full configuration interaction (FCI) or complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) limit and produces more accurate PECs with smaller nonparallelity errors than its molecular orbital (MO) theory-based analogue. Test results reveal that the nonorthogonal orbital-based VB theory provides a reverse but more efficient way to truncate the complete active Hilbert space by seniority numbers.

A globally accurate potential energy surface is reported for the electronic ground-state H2O+. The ab initio energies utilized to map the potential energy surface are calculated at the multireference configuration interaction method employing the aug-cc-pVQZ basis set and the full valence complete active space wave function as reference. In order to improve accuracy of the resulting raw ab initio energies, they are then extrapolated to the complete basis set limit and most importantly to the full configuration-interaction limit by semiempirically correcting the dynamical correlation using the double many-body expansion-scaled external correlation method. The topographical features of the current potential energy surface were examined in detail, which agree nicely with those of other theoretical work.

Iterative universal state selective correction for the Brillouin-Wigner multireference coupled-cluster theory.

As a further development of the previously introduced a posteriori Universal State-Selective (USS) corrections [K. Kowalski, J. Chem. Phys. 134, 194107 (2011); J. Brabec et al., ibid. 136, 124102 (2012)], we suggest an iterative form of the USS correction by means of correcting effective Hamiltonian matrix elements. We also formulate USS corrections via the left Bloch equations. The convergence of the USS corrections with excitation level towards the full configuration interaction (FCI) limit is also investigated. Various forms of the USS and simplified diagonal USS corrections at the singles and doubles and perturbative triple levels are numerically assessed on several model systems and on the ozone and tetramethyleneethane molecules. It is shown that the iterative USS correction can successfully replace the previously developed a posteriori Brillouin-Wigner coupled cluster size-extensivity correction, while it is not sensitive to intruder states and performs well also in other cases when the a posteriori one fails, like, e.g., for the asymmetric vibration mode of ozone.

Benchmark study on the smallest bimolecular nucleophilic substitution reaction: H⁻+CH₄-->CH₄+H⁻.

We report here a benchmark study on the bimolecular nucleophilic substitution (SN2) reaction between hydride and methane, for which we have obtained reference energies at the coupled cluster toward full configuration-interaction limit (CC-cf/CBS). Several wavefunction (HF, MP2, coupled cluster) and density functional methods are compared for their reliability regarding these reference data.

Towards the assignment of the REMPI spectrum of Ph2O using CIS and TD-DFT methods

Tentative assignment of the low-lying vibrational features of the first electronic excited singlet-state S1 of diphenyl ether (Ph2O), obtained from resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionisation (REMPI) spectroscopy, is performed using CIS and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) methods. The potential energy surfaces, regarding the rotation of the phenyl rings relatively to the C–O–C plane, are obtained at the B3LYP/6-31G(d) level of theory, for the ground-state of neutral and cationic Ph2O and for its first excited singlet state. The torsional barriers of the ground state of diphenyl ether were studied by means of quantum-chemical perturbations of increasing accuracy and an extrapolation to the complete basis set limit and full configuration interaction (FCI) was performed through the use of correlation consistent basis sets and the continued fraction method. The first adiabatic ionisation energy (AIE) of the twist conformer is computed at 8.60 eV in the FCI limit, much higher than the experimental results of Terlouw et al. (8.09±0.03 eV) and Paiva et al. (7.8±0.1 eV). The B3LYP result of 7.82 eV is, however, in reasonable agreement with the result of Paiva et al.The first singlet excitation energy for the twist conformation is found to be 5.5 eV at the CIS/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory. Some features of the experimental REMPI spectrum, previously obtained by one of the authors, are explained and a new insight on the ionisation energy of diphenyl ether is presented.

Global spectroscopy of the water monomer

Given the large energy required for its electronic excitation, the most important properties of the water molecule are governed by its ground potential energy surface (PES). Novel experiments are now able to probe this surface over a very extended energy range, requiring new theoretical procedures for their interpretation. As part of this study, a new, accurate, global spectroscopic-quality PES and a new, accurate, global dipole moment surface are developed. They are used for the computation of the high-resolution spectrum of water up to the first dissociation limit and beyond as well as for the determination of Stark coefficients for high-lying states. The water PES has been determined by combined ab initio and semi-empirical studies. As a first step, a very accurate, global, ab initio PES was determined using the all-electron, internally contracted multi-reference configuration interaction technique together with a large Gaussian basis set. Scalar relativistic energy corrections are also determined in order to move the energy determinations close to the relativistic complete basis set full configuration interaction limit. The electronic energies were computed for a set of about 2500 geometries, covering carefully selected configurations from equilibrium up to dissociation. Nuclear motion computations using this PES reproduce the observed energy levels up to 39 000 cm(-1) with an accuracy of better than 10 cm(-1). Line positions and widths of resonant states above dissociation show an agreement with experiment of about 50 cm(-1). An improved semi-empirical PES is produced by fitting the ab initio PES to accurate experimental data, resulting in greatly improved accuracy, with a maximum deviation of about 1 cm(-1) for all vibrational band origins. Theoretical results based on this semi-empirical surface are compared with experimental data for energies starting at 27 000 cm(-1), going all the way up to dissociation at about 41 000 cm(-1) and a few hundred wavenumbers beyond it.

Accurate ab-Initio-Based Single-Sheeted DMBE Potential-Energy Surface for Ground-State N2O

A global accurate double-many-body expansion potential-energy surface is reported for the electronic ground state of N(2)O. The new form is shown to accurately mimic the ab-initio points calculated at the multireference configuration interaction level using the aug-cc-pVTZ basis set and the full-valence-complete-active-space wave function as reference. To improve the calculated raw energies, they have been extrapolated to the completed basis set limit and most importantly to the full configuration-interaction limit by correcting semiempirically the calculated dynamical correlation with the double-many-body expansion-scaled external correlation method. The topographical features of the novel potential-energy surface were examined in detail and compared with those of other potential functions available in the literature. Good agreement with the experimental data is observed.

Aluminum Foils: The Contrasting Characters of Hyperconjugation and Steric Repulsion in Aluminum Dimetallocenes

The novel sandwich complex Cp2*Al2I2, which was recently synthesized by Minasian and Arnold, has been characterized using ab initio and density functional methods. A large family of related compounds was also investigated. Although a few Al(II)–Al(II) bonds are known, this is the first such bond to be supported by Cp-type ligands. In addition, in the remarkable Cp4*Al4 synthesis by Roesky, Cp2*Al2I2 is the Al(II) intermediate; Cp4*Al4 is important as a precursor to novel organoaluminum species. Halogen and ligand effects on the Al–Al bond in Cp2*Al2I2 were systematically explored by studying a series of 20 Cp2*Al2I2 derivatives using density functional theory with relativistic basis sets for the halogens. Comparison was made with the focal point treatment, which uses extrapolation to estimate the full configuration interaction and complete basis set limit energy. Torsional potential energy curves, natural population analyses, and enthalpies of hydrogenation were computed. Using the focal point approach, torsional barriers were computed with 0.05 kcal mol(–1) uncertainty. The interplay of steric and electronic effects on the torsional potential energy curves, enthalpies of dehydrogenation reactions, and geometries is discussed. In species with small ligands (R = H, Me), hyperconjugative effects determine the torsional landscape, whereas steric repulsions dominate in species with Cp* alkyl ligands. Species with Cp ligands represent an intermediate case, thus providing insight into how ligands modulate the structures and properties of small metal clusters.
