Pemberdayaan Ekonomi Masyarakat Kelurahan Kastela Kota Ternate

The purpose of this program is to actualize one of the elements of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, namely community service and to assist the community in increasing community productivity in the Kastela village. The method used is focus group discussion (FGD). The result is that the community and the management group will hold a meeting to discuss the complete arrangement of the Kastela beach tourism area. Among them will be arrangement of objects that will serve as an attraction for visitors. For this reason, the Kastela beach as the main object will be arranged to be able to encourage visitors' interest and be interested in always visiting. Among them are 1) The parking area will be prepared and arranged so that it can give the impression of being comfortable and safe for visitors. For this purpose, special land will be prepared within the tourist attraction area; 2) Gardening will be done to create a beautiful environment, fresher air, and trees and flowers that can add joy to visitors; 3) Stalls selling various culinary delights will also be arranged and their skills will be improved in processing various traditional foods. Personalized Ventilation as a Possible Strategy for Reducing Airborne Infectious Disease Transmission on Commercial Aircraft

In the last decade, there has been an increase in ease and affordability of air travel in terms of mobility for people all around the world. Airplane passengers may experience different risks of contracting airborne infectious diseases onboard aircraft, such as influenza or severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-CoV-1 and SARS-CoV-2), due to nonuniform airflow patterns inside the airplane cabin or proximity to an infected person. In this paper, a novel approach for reducing the risk of contracting airborne infectious diseases is presented that uses a low-momentum personalized ventilation system with a protective role against airborne pathogens. Numerical simulations, supported by nonintrusive experimental measurements for validation purposes, were used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system. Simulation and experimental results of the low-momentum personalized ventilation system showed the formation of a microclimate around each passenger with cleaner and fresher air than produced by the general mixing ventilation systems.

Tonic for Body or Soul: Fresh Air for Poor Children in Progressive Era New York City

The Fresh Air Fund and the Floating Hospital were two charities that launched in Gilded Age New York City and flourished during the Progressive Era. Part of the fresh air charity movement, both organizations argued that impoverished children living in crowded tenement districts needed fresher air. But these reformers had strikingly different notions of what fresh air was and where to find it. The Floating Hospital cast fresh air as medicine that children could breathe in the city’s harbor, but urban air could never be fresh to the Fresh Air Fund. Using fresh air as a symbol of rural wholesomeness in contrast to urban deviance, the organization aimed to mold children into model citizens by exposing them to the countryside. Diverging ideas about cities and air impacted children’s experiences, determining whether charities treated them equally regardless of race or sex and whether reformers respected or tried to break familial bonds.

Comparing thermal comfort and air quality performance of two active chilled beam systems in an open-plan office

The traditional air distribution and supply devices in ventilated rooms are not always able to effectively remove excess heat from the space. Therefore, chilled beams, especially the active systems, are used to achieve the desired cooling demand. The focus of this paper was the potential benefit of a newly designed active chilled beam (ACB) system, to improve heat removal effectiveness local thermal condition and indoor air quality in the occupants’ breathing zone. The system based on 1-way flow design (1W-ACB) was installed in an open-plan office and its performance was studied by analysing the temperatures, velocities and tracer gas concentrations in predetermined risky zones. The system was compared against a traditional 4-way flow design (4W-ACB).The obtained results showed that heat removal effectiveness was slightly higher for the 1W-ACB system compared to the 4W-ACB system. The local thermal condition was very good close to the workstations when using 1W-ACB. The benefits of the new system were also shown in the occupied zone by analysing the mean age of air and air-change effectiveness (ACE) in the breathing level at the workstation locations. The 1W-ACB system provided air with lower mean age (fresher air), and therefore higher ACE, near the breathing zone at the workstations compared to the 4W-ACB. On the other hand, the 4W-ACB system had the advantage of providing high thermal and mean age of air uniformity throughout the room.

Evaluation of different air distribution systems for sleeping spaces in transport vehicles

Air distribution in the sleeping space of a transport vehicle is important for sleep quality, especially during a long journey. In order to design a thermally comfortable sleeping space with fresher air, this investigation used a verified computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method to obtain the distributions of air velocity, air temperature, and CO2 concentration in the sleeping space with displacement, personalized, and mixing ventilation systems. This study used the facial-area speed ratio, mean age of air, and draft risk obtained by CFD to evaluate the air distribution effectiveness. The results showed that the performance of the personalized ventilation system was better than that of the displacement and mixing ventilation systems because it provided superior thermal comfort and higher air quality. The distributions of air velocity, air temperature, and contaminant concentration computed by CFD were validated with corresponding experimental data obtained in a full-scale test rig.

A Case Study of the Energy Saving Potential of Stratum Ventilation

Stratum ventilation is a recently proposed air distribution system. It works by creating a layer of fresher air in the occupants' breathing zone. This is achieved by placing large supply inlets along the side-walls of the room just above the height of the occupants. Fresh air is emitted into the room and gradually loses momentum. The supply velocity is sufficiently strong to provide fresh air directly to the occupants without space mixing. This technique has been proposed as a method to cope with elevated indoor temperatures in summer, which is required by several governments in East Asia for carbon reduction. Previous studies have shown that stratum ventilation provides good indoor air quality (IAQ) and thermal comfort. This paper is intended to demonstrate the energy saving potential of stratum ventilation by comparing its energy performance with that of displacement ventilation. A typical classroom is used as an example. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted to study airflow and pollutant transport in the classroom. The air quality and comfort performance (PPD, PD and local mean air age in the occupied zone) of the stratum case were found to be comparable to those of displacement ventilation. In addition, energy saving of the stratum ventilation case, under the current set-up, was found to be significant.

Validation of a CFD Model for Research into Stratum Ventilation

In this paper experimental results are used to verify and validate a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model based on a commercial package. The validation is used to ensure that the CFD model is able to simulate stratum ventilation. The low speed air jet is the basis for a newly proposed ventilation mode whereby jets are placed strategically around a room at breathing height level to create a layer or stratum of relatively fresher air. Case studies from three independent experiments are simulated using the CFD model to ensure that the model is able to represent the physical characteristics, such as air flow and heat transfer properties, of this type of ventilation system.
