Le rapport des jeunes français à la laïcité dans un monde globalisé

Various opinion surveys published since 2020 have shown that, when it comes to secularism, young French people are much more liberal than their elders. The authors of this article ask to what extent this divide is linked to globalization, a process that particularly concerns millennials, and which is sometimes perceived as weakening the transmission of national values. By constructing and analyzing a survey that, in an unprecedented way, crosses the level of integration into globalization and the relationship to secularism of 18–30 year-olds, they show that the two variables interact, but that globalization both widens and closes generational gaps in secularism.

Personal and social protective factors of cyberhate: A general strain theory approach.

Adolescents of today grow up in a connected world. While online communication offers great opportunities, it can also have negative impact on adolescents' life. In this work, we are interested in the use of online communication tools to share and create cyberhate content. Anchored in the general strain theory, we studied how social support (i.e., parental, peers and teacher support) may be related to cyberhate perpetration. We further tested how personal characteristics such as empathy, self-esteem and anxiety could predict the propensity to be involved as cyberhate perpetrators. We collected self-reported questionnaires of 1019 French young people (13.04 years; ranging from 9 to 17) and measured their perceived (a) parental, (b) peers and (c) teachers' support as well as their (d) empathy/benevolence, (e) self-esteem and (f) anxiety. We also measured cyberhate perpetration and the association between perpetration, social support and personal characteristics. Our results highlight that parental and teacher support represent protective factors for cyberhate perpetration. Our results further suggest that self-esteem is negatively linked to the propensity to cyberhate perpetration.

“The New Onegin” from France with Love

The article presents to the Russian reader a remake of Pushkin’s novel «Eugene Onegin» written by a young French writer Clementine Beauvais and published in Russian under the title «Is it really the same Tatiana?» in 2019. The first part of the novel mostly follows the plot of the original: Tatyana falls in love with Onegin and writes him a letter, to which she receives a refusal. But here are important differences too. The main characters are young French people: when they met, she was less than 15, and Onegin was 17 years old. The next meeting happens accidentally in the Paris metro 10 years later, and the situation changes dramatically. This time the feelings of the characters are mutual, but there are new obstacles on the way to happiness. As in Pushkin’s novel, there is a third important character there, a narrator, or, to be exact, a female narrator who loves to appeal to the reader commenting on the behavior of her characters, and introducing lyrical digressions on landscapes. She is more sympathetic to the main character then to Tatiana, because he reinterpreted his past critically and this time he is ready for anything to make his union with Tatiana come true. But an obstacle comes from Tatyana. The ending of the novel is open. The author invites readers to choose their own version, as well as to compare many other plot parallels with Pushkin’s original. C. Beauvais successfully experiments with interactive forms: e-mails, emoticons, etc. As a result, C. Beauvais’s novel has got a great diversity of rhythmic and strophic lines, which especially attracts a young reader

Young people’s proposals for a web-based intervention for sexual health promotion: a French qualitative study

BackgroundPromoting sexual health is key to improving the supportive behaviors and well-being of young people. With the advent of the Internet, web-based features for sexual health promotion may be attractive to a diverse range of young people. This study aims to assess young people’s proposals regarding a web-based intervention for sexual health promotion.MethodsNineteen French young people aged 15–24 years participated to the study. In a semi-structured interview, they presented their views on a web-based intervention for sexual promotion. Data were coded with N’Vivo and subjected to qualitative thematic analysis to explore their proposals.ResultsThe majority of participants (n = 18) thought that a web-based intervention for sexual health promotion would be attractive. Young people interviewed made 31 concrete proposals for sexual health promotion on the Internet. Participatory and interactive dimensions on the internet appeared essential, with the need for stimulating activities and interaction with peers, but also with competent professionals and moderation. Face to the risks of the internet, they expressed the need of a secure and confidential space, to generate trust and participation in intervention. For participants, sexual health should be addressed in all its dimensions, taking into account the relational, sexual, and gender dimensions, and by incrementing on the internet valid, credible and personalized content.ConclusionsIn sexual health promotion, young people are indispensable stakeholders who can make concrete proposals and can also participate in content creation and research. More broadly, in health promotion, involving target audiences in decisions represents a promising perspective.

Are Z Generation young people potential investors in sustainable finance?

Given the amounts at stake to make the planet more sustainable in the coming years, at least at the European level, public investment will certainly not be sufficient to channel the necessary sums. It therefore seems essential to direct private financial flows into activities that are compatible with the general direction taken. We wanted to question the capacity of young French people of Z Generation, who are the investors of tomorrow, to take on the role of future sustainable investors. We highlighted three groups of individuals with different knowledge and attitudes towards traditional and sustainable investment. Oneof these groups, representing more than half of the respondents, includes individuals with the most favorable attitude towards sustainable investment, but with little knowledge of investment and a rather negative attitude towards traditional investment. These results lead us to wonder about the origins of this attitude towards sustainable investment.

Effect of alcohol ad content regulations on young people: a multi-method study

PurposeUpstream social marketers advocate implementing effective public policies to protect vulnerable populations from the impacts of advertising harmful products. This study aims to explore how alcohol ad content restrictions (as practised in some countries where ads may only convey factual information and objective properties of alcohol products) versus non-regulated advertising affect consumers’ product perceptions, attitude towards the ad and desire to drink. This study also examines how such restrictions influence the noticeability of text health warnings in ads (signalling alcohol-related risks) depending on their prominence.Design/methodology/approachA multi-method study was used to increase the validity of results. An online quantitative survey (n = 348) and an eye-tracking study (n = 184) were conducted on young French people (15–30). The eye-tracking method is particularly relevant for objectively measuring visual attention.FindingsResults show that content restrictions on alcohol advertising reduce ad appeal and desire to drink. A more prominent format enhanced attentional processing of the text warning, whereas none of the tested ad contents influenced its noticeability.Practical implicationsThis study assesses scientific evidence of the effect on alcohol ad content regulations adopted by some countries and provides arguments for upstream social marketers to inform and influence policymakers.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first multi-method study that assesses the effect of regulated vs non-regulated alcohol ads in terms of persuasion and of text warning visibility.

The private and political heritage of the Algerian War among French youth

ABSTRACT Based on a quantitative study of 3000 young French people aged 18 to 25 and qualitative interviews conducted with grandchildren of families affected by the Algerian war, this research proposes an exploration of young people’s memory of this very controversial past in French society. It demonstrates that family history and politicization are both vectors of knowledge and interest in this history. However, if family history simply explains a greater interest in this history, the judgement on the past and its actors remains determined by young people’s political orientations. Issues of otherness and negative perceptions of Algerians, Muslims, and Arabs are at the heart of this contemporary political cleavage.

Peculariarities of neologisms in French Internet slang

Our paper deals with neologisms in the French language introduced through the Internet. In the modern world, Internet slang plays important role in the communication of Internet users; Recently, there has been a tendency to actively use Internet vocabulary in the daily life of French youth.  The French language is characterized by shotering a large number of words in colloqual speech. This phenomenon also manifests itself in Internet relationships. Distinctive features include active use of abbreviations, rep;acement of some letter combinations with apostrophes, use of sumbols (numbers, capital letters, money symbols) to replace consonant parts of whole words, creation and/or use of neologisms. French Internet slang, which is characterized by different ways of word formation, often atypical for the literary French language, is widely used by modern French young people when communicating in Internet sefvices, and it comes out of the framework of the virtual language, even in resal everyday communication.

Addictive Behaviours in Young People—An International Comparative Study of the Construction of an Addictive Personality (France, Switzerland, Quebec)

Addictive behaviours invite us as clinicians and researchers to focus at all times on the subject hidden behind the addictive object, particularly during the process of subjectivation embodied by adolescence. This article is the fruit of international comparative research to explore the prism of personalities of adolescents and young adults with addictions living in France, Switzerland, and Quebec. This study involved 94 participants, aged between 14 and 32. They were divided into a clinical group (54 subjects) and a control group (40 subjects). The methodology consisted of two complementary instruments: the MMPI-A personality test and the CaMIR attachment self-report questionnaire. The results highlighted personality traits common to all three countries: depression, psychopathic deviance, anxiety, social discomfort, social alienation, and physical complaints. They also showed the predominance in all addicts of insecure attachment (detached rather than preoccupied). There were also variations between countries. The Swiss and French young people share a particularly low level of hypomania and a high level of social introversion, whereas the Quebec data showed paranoia as a distinctive trait. The results will be discussed from an institutional perspective in particular, taking into account the treatment practices available to young addicts in the three countries in our study.

Cosmopolitan Empowerments and Biographical Trajectories among Young French Fans of Hallyu

This article explores the passion of young French people for the Hallyu, within the framework of an analysis of the contribution of the “consumption of difference” (Schroeder 2015) to the formation of the self through the figure of the 'cosmopolitan amateur' (Cicchelli and Octobre 2018a). We will first look at the reasons for the success of Hallyu in France then discuss the different forms of empowerment stemmed from the consumption of Korean products, among young people (74 in depth-interviews with young fans aged 18-31) with no previous link with Korea, which nurture their biographical trajectories.

School-to-work transition in France: the role of education in escaping long-term NEET trajectories

ABSTRACT The aim of this paper is to analyse the school-to-work transition of young people in France, focusing specifically on those who are not in employment, education or training (so-called NEETs), in order to understand their risk of becoming and remaining NEET. Using longitudinal data from a representative national cohort of French young people leaving the educational system in 2010, this study shows how NEET status fits in more or less long-lasting ways in their career pathways. We indicate that 70% of young people experienced a NEET status at least once over the three-year period, if we retain a static and conventional definition of NEET. For most of them, NEET is a temporary situation that spans all educational attainment groups. However, a quarter of the cohort is still in a NEET status 3 years after leaving the education system. The lack of educational and social capital, as well as geographical economic conditions, are decisive factors in remaining in long-term NEET trajectories.

Louise Labé : une femme remarquable à la Renaissance

This article focuses on a French poetess, Louise Labé, from the sixteenth century. In the first part we will analyze the education she received. It was an “Italian” education, different from that received by young French people of a certain social class at the time. Next we’ll analyze how Louise Labé believed that women were equal to men. She claimed independence of thought, freedom of speech, the right to education and the importance of women in society. Then we will study some of the particularities of her works. For example, Louise Labé gives a place to women but not as objects, and she reverses male and female roles in her works. In the second part we will see the image of the woman in the poet's work. A woman in love but with a voice.

SOME ASPECTS OF STUDY OF FRENCH INTERNET LANGUAGE AS A MODERN PHENOMENON

The article deals with the emergence and use of the French language of Internet networks, the reasons for the appearance of such concept and the ways of its use in the speech of modern youth. The language of Internet networks is presented as a kind of linguistic and cultural phenomenon, which gives an idea not only about the features of its use, but also about the global prospects for the development of the national language. The language of social networks uses lexical units and units that entered the lexical-semantic system of the language, the linguistic sphere, but did not exist in the same linguistic sphere in the previous period, formed according to the laws of word formation of the corresponding language, sublanguage or borrowed from another language for communication needs, as well as those who have switched from the positive composition of the language. They possess the formed semantic, pragmatic and stylistic properties (attributes) and are perceived by the speakers in this language community as new, being fixed in the dictionary of new words. Teaching French as a foreign language requires compulsory reliance on the language of young French people who communicate with each other through modern means of communication, studying the slang of French youth helps to understand the features and originality of the national picture of the world, to understand the national specific features of the mentality of French youth better. It has been established that the Internet language is characterized by the same phenomena that exist in a literary language: a change in the grammatical form of a word, synonymy, borrowing from other languages and language strata, and import into a literary language. The article considers the general speech characteristics of the phenomenon and analyzes the language of French social networks. Based on the results of the work, some features of the French Internet language were identified and the corresponding Ukrainian lexical and grammatical examples were given.

Development and Validation of the Temporal Competency Test-5D

We developed and validated a new version of our test of temporal competency. In three studies we (1) defined dimensions, created items and studied face and content validity; (2) examined dimensionality and reliability; and (3) confirmed factor structure and studied convergent validity. Focus groups were held in which we drew up temporal concepts that articulated well with clinical observations. We derived a questionnaire that was administered to French young people and this data was used to reduce the questionnaire to 15 items. Reliability and validity of the 15-item version was studied among samples: French college, French high school, and Québec college. Five dimensions were defined and retained: anticipation, full present, temporal rupture, past, future. 15 items explained 68% of variance. The model provided adequate fit in confirmatory analyses across samples. Scales converged with hypothesized dimensions of the ZTPI and scales mostly maintained acceptable reliability. Conceptual issues with ZTPI were addressed, possibly rectified and discussed in light of clinical practice. The past was defined by how much one grows from experience independently of how ‘happy’ or ‘sad’ events were. Full present and temporal rupture relate to living in the now, the first by means of flow and engagement, the second by means of addictive behaviors. Future entailed a projection unto uncertainty, whereas anticipation defined adapting behavior in order to achieve short-term goals. We found that the questionnaire had adequate psychometric proprieties among Francophone youth in Canada and in France.

Boucan! Loud moves against invisibility in postcolonial France

In the late 2000s, young French black people, practicing different African popular dance genres, use the term boucan (loud noise) to describe forms of bodily expressivity that are mostly inaudible. Boucan, to them, is predominantly visual and is produced through ingenuity, boldness and flamboyance in competitive performances relying on dance, appearance and conspicuous consumption, taking place in public spaces. This article looks at the ways in which both sonic and visual ‘noises’ are used to negotiate presence and circulation in urban spaces that are only virtually open to all. Examining a moral panic around Black female ‘gangs’ at the end of the 2000s, this paper focuses on the role of Black youth culture in articulating the ‘politics of appropriateness’ to which young French Black women are subjected in public space. It asks how these women make their presences felt, occupy space and claim a ‘place’, navigating between the trope of the (loud) ‘angry black woman’ and that of the (silent) ‘traditional’ woman. This discussion of boucan puts into perspective the rhetorical linkage, long established in scholarship on race and gender, of dominated and racialized groups with the body, danger and ‘noise’. It relates the aesthetics of loudness developed by danseurs/danseuses afros to the in/visibility of blackness in France.

Drinking motives as mediators between personality traits and alcohol use among young French people

IntroductionRelationships between personality traits and alcohol consumption behaviors have been inconsistently found. Research suggests that taking into account more proximal factors, such as drinking motives, would aid in explaining these inconsistent findings. MethodParticipants (N = 690) were administered measures of alcohol use, drinking motives and personality traits. Five multiple parallel mediator models were elaborated wherein drinking motives mediated the relationship between each trait and AUDIT scores once having controlled for age, school group and sex. ResultsEnhancement, social and conformity motives mediated the relationship between extraversion and alcohol use. The indirect effect between agreeableness or conscientiousness and alcohol use was mediated by decreased coping-depression, enhancement and social motives. Interestingly, neuroticism alone did not predict alcohol consumption, but a case of competitive mediation was observed. Neuroticism led to heightened coping-depression motives, which led to increased alcohol use, but also to increased conformity motives, which led to depleted alcohol consumption. DiscussionOur study suggests that most Big 5 personality traits have a relationship with alcohol consumption in part because they develop into drinking motives. Inconsistent findings observed in the extent literature were explained in part by conditional processes.

The functioning of youth discourse in the sphere of Internet communications

In the context of discourse theory, the computer discourse occupies a special place. The computer discourse can be regarded as a linguistic category that combines the signs of personality-oriented and status-oriented discourse. Computer discourse explores the peculiarities of the communicative environment, including the way communication and characteristics of the communicants. The article deals with the functioning of youth discourse in the sphere of Internet communications. The evolution of the French language is taking place under the influence of social networks. Rapid development of Internet technologies means that, the neutralization of oral and written speech, the mixing of spontaneous and prepared speech, the processes of word-formation are actively taking place in the computer discourse. The youth discourse of Internet communications is the most open system in the modern French language and its vocabulary is constantly enlarging. The individuality of the user manifests itself in francophone youth blogs. There is a particular interest about blogs of French youth. Wealthy, stylistically marked language of teens differs from a standard variety of the French language with its own exceptional set of vocabulary words. Communication used in youth blogs has its own distinctiveness. While analyzing the lexical-semantic peculiarities of French young people blogs, a lot of jargon, slang words, expressions, conversions, and abbreviations can be observed. Language used in friendly emails is mostly popular among youth. Since there are no strict rules in French social media services, the breaking of orthographical and grammatical rules of the language can be observed.
