Field phenotyping of ten wheat cultivars under elevated CO2 shows seasonal differences in chlorophyll fluorescence, plant height and vegetation indices.

In the context of climate change and global sustainable development goals, future wheat cultivation has to master various challenges at a time, including the rising atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration ([CO2]). To investigate growth and photosynthesis dynamics under the effects of ambient (~434 ppm) and elevated [CO2] (~622 ppm), a Free-Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) facility was combined with an automated phenotyping platform and an array of sensors. Ten modern winter wheat cultivars (Triticum aestivum L.) were monitored over a vegetation period using a Light-induced Fluorescence Transient (LIFT) sensor, ground-based RGB cameras and a UAV equipped with an RGB and multispectral camera. The LIFT sensor enabled a fast quantification of the photosynthetic performance by measuring the operating efficiency of Photosystem II (Fq'/Fm') and the kinetics of electron transport, i.e. the reoxidation rates Fr1' and Fr2'. Our results suggest that elevated [CO2] significantly increased Fq'/Fm' and plant height during the vegetative growth phase. As the plants transitioned to the senescence phase, a pronounced decline in Fq'/Fm' was observed under elevated [CO2]. This was also reflected in the reoxidation rates Fr1' and Fr2'. A large majority of the cultivars showed a decrease in the harvest index, suggesting a different resource allocation and indicating a potential plateau in yield progression under e[CO2]. Our results indicate that the rise in atmospheric [CO2] has significant effects on the cultivation of winter wheat with strong manifestation during early and late growth.

Elevated CO2, O3 and their interaction have differential impact on soil microbial diversity and functions in wheat agroecosystems

Elevated carbon dioxide (EC) and elevated ozone (EO) due to changing climate have a significant impact on the plant growth rate, primary productivity, and root turnover. EC and EO could have a differential impact on the structure and functioning of soil microbial communities in terrestrial ecosystems via modifications in the microbial population, soil enzyme activity, decomposition of organic compounds and cycling of nutrients. For the development of sustainable agroecosystems, soil microbial communities are essential due to their major roles in nutrient cycling, crop-microbe interplay and resistance towards biotic/abiotic factors. However, it remains difficult to project how multiple climate change factors would affect below-ground functions. Free-Air CO2 and O3 enrichment facility (FAOCE) was used to explore the effects of EC (550 ± 50 ppm) and EO (65 ± 10 ppb) along with their combined interactive treatment ECO on the structure and abundance of soil microbial community, microbial biomass carbon (MBC), microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN) and microbes involved in N cycling in wheat crop (Triticum aestivum) under field conditions. The MBC increased by 20% in EC and declined by 5% in EO to ambient control. Treatments EC and ECO stimulated the growth of ammonia and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria. Heterotrophic microbial populations were favoured under EC and inhibited under EO. Treatments indirectly affected the soil microbial community structure by altering N-cycling microbes and modifying MBC and MBN which eventually changed soil fertility and biogeochemistry.

The influence of elevated CO2 and soil depth on rhizosphere activity and nutrient availability in a mature Eucalyptus woodland

Abstract. Elevated carbon dioxide (eCO2) in the atmosphere increases forest biomass productivity but only where soil nutrients, particularly nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), are not limiting growth. eCO2, in turn, can impact rhizosphere nutrient availability. Our current understanding of nutrient cycling under eCO2 is mainly derived from surface soil, leaving mechanisms of the impact of eCO2 on rhizosphere nutrient availability at deeper depths unexplored. To investigate the influence of eCO2 on nutrient availability in soil at depth, we studied various C, N, and P pools (extractable, microbial biomass, total soil C and N, and mineral-associated P) and nutrient cycling processes (enzyme activity and gross N mineralisation) associated with C, N, and P cycling in both bulk and rhizosphere soil at different depths at the Free Air CO2 enrichment facility in a native Australian mature Eucalyptus woodland (EucFACE) on a nutrient-poor soil. We found decreasing nutrient availability and gross N mineralisation with depth; however, this depth-associated decrease was reduced under eCO2, which we suggest is due to enhanced root influence. Increases in available PO43-, adsorbed P, and the C : N and C : P ratio of enzyme activity with depth were observed. We conclude that the influences of roots and of eCO2 can affect available nutrient pools and processes well beyond the surface soil of a mature forest ecosystem. Our findings indicate a faster recycling of nutrients in the rhizosphere, rather than additional nutrients becoming available through soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition. If the plant growth response to eCO2 is reduced by the constraints of nutrient limitations, then the current results would call to question the potential for mature tree ecosystems to fix more C as biomass in response to eCO2. Future studies should address how accessible the available nutrients at depth are to deeply rooted plants and if fast recycling of nutrients is a meaningful contribution to biomass production and the accumulation of soil C in response to eCO2.

Water use dynamics of dryland wheat grown under elevated CO2 with supplemental nitrogen

Context Elevated atmospheric CO2 (e[CO2]) and nitrogen (N) fertilisation stimulate biomass and yield of crops. However, their interactions depend on crop growth stages and may affect water use dynamics. Aims and methods This study investigated the interactive effects of two N rates, 0 and 100 kg N ha−1, and two CO2 concentrations, ambient (a[CO2], ~400 μmol mol−1) and e[CO2] (~550 μmol mol−1), on biomass, yield and water use of two wheat cultivars, Wyalkatchem (N-use efficient) and Yitpi (local), using a free air CO2 enrichment facility. Key results Elevated [CO2] stimulated leaf area (10%, P = 0.003) and aboveground biomass (11%, P = 0.03). In addition, e[CO2] reduced stomatal conductance (25%, P < 0.001) and increased net assimilation rates (12%, P < 0.001), resulting in greater (40%, P < 0.001) intrinsic water use efficiency. During early growth stages, e[CO2] resulted in higher water use than a[CO2]; however, this difference disappeared later in the season, resulting in similar cumulative water use under both CO2 concentrations. Supplemental N stimulated grain yield of Yitpi by 14% while decreasing that of Wyalkatchem by 7% (N × cultivar, P = 0.063). With supplemental N, Yitpi maintained greater post-anthesis leaf N, chlorophyll content, canopy cover and net assimilation rate than Wyalkatchem. Conclusions During early growth stages, the e[CO2]-induced stimulation of leaf-level water use efficiency was offset by greater biomass, resulting in higher water use. By the end of the season, similar cumulative water use under both CO2 concentrations indicates the dominating effect of the prevailing seasonal conditions in the study area. Observed yield responses of the studied cultivars to supplemental N were associated with their ability to maintain post-anthesis photosynthetic capabilities. Implications Our findings suggest that N-use efficiency traits and responsiveness need to be considered independently to optimise benefits from the ‘CO2 fertilisation effect’ through breeding.

Fertilizer-derived nitrogen use of two varieties of single-crop paddy rice: a free-air carbon dioxide enrichment study using polymer-coated 15N-labeled urea

ABSTRACT Atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) have steadily increased over recent decades. The fertilization effect of elevated CO2 concentrations (E-[CO2]) is known to increase the biomass production and also the nitrogen (N) demand of paddy rice, which affects the rice N use efficiency. This study was conducted to elucidate the fertilizer-derived N use of paddy rice (Oryza sativa L.) for two varieties, japonica cv. Koshihikari and indica cv. Takanari, with and without E-[CO2] using a free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE) facility in central Japan. To quantify the fate of fertilizer-derived N directly, polymer-coated 15N-labeled urea was used with a one-shot application rate of 80 kg N ha–1 incorporated into the plowed layer at the basal fertilization before transplanting of rice seedlings. The biomass, total N concentrations, and 15N abundance in each part of the rice plants were measured at the panicle initiation, heading, and maturing stages. The total N content and 15N abundance in the soil were measured at the maturing stage to evaluate the N balance of the rice–soil system. While E-[CO2] significantly increased the whole plant biomass and the total N content in panicles, it did not increase the total N and the fertilizer-derived N content in the whole plant. The recovery efficiency (fertilizer-derived N in the whole plant to applied N, RE) ranged between 64.9% and 68.7%, and the agronomic efficiency (fertilizer-derived N in panicles to applied N, AE) ranged between 37.8% and 43.8%. The effect of CO2 on RE and AE was not significant. The REs, higher in Koshihikari, and the AEs, higher in Takanari indicated that Takanari preferentially allocated fertilizer-derived N to panicles. The REs, 69% at the maximum in this study, implies an upper limit of use efficiency of N fertilizer, even for polymer-coated (controlled-release) fertilizer. E-[CO2] significantly increased the rice N uptake from sources other than fertilizer, of which mineralization was the most-likely source. Monitoring of soil fertility and appropriate fertilization management are, therefore, necessary for sustainable rice production avoiding long-term decline in soil N fertility.

Response of rice growth and leaf physiology to elevated CO2 concentrations: A meta-analysis of 20-year FACE studies

The Free Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) facility enables the study of plant responses to climate change under open field conditions. This meta-analysis was conducted to quantitatively assess the effects of elevated CO2 concentration ([CO2]) on 47 variables describing rice growth physiology and whether CO2 effects were influenced by cultivar, plant growth stage, nitrogen application rate or temperature. On average, elevated [CO2] increased root and shoot biomass by 28% and 19%, respectively. Among shoot organs, the [CO2]-induced increase in leaf biomass was only 9%, significantly smaller than a 24% increase in stems or a 25% increase in panicles. The higher biomass for FACE rice was consistent with the stimulation in plant height (4%), maximum tiller number (11%), leaf area index (9%) and light-saturated photosynthetic rate (Asat, 22%). When compared within rice groups, hybrid rice showed the greatest CO2 response in growth and leaf physiological variables. Elevated [CO2] increased plant biomass and Asat at each rice growth stage, but the increment tended to decline with the advancement of rice growth and development. The increase in aboveground biomass at elevated [CO2] was enhanced by a higher nitrogen supply but reduced with a temperature elevation of 1–2 °C. Rice growth benefited more from elevated [CO2] in Chinese FACE studies than in Japanese FACE studies, which may result from the different cultivars and nitrogen application rates used in the two countries. Combined with a previous meta-analysis of the rice yield response to FACE, the [CO2] level predicted in the middle of this century will improve rice productivity by stimulating leaf photosynthesis. However, the effects of CO2 on the photosynthetic rate and rice growth tend to shrink over the plant life cycle. Selecting heat-resistant, high-yield hybrid rice cultivars with large sink capacity, supplemented with appropriate nitrogen input, will maximize the CO2 fertilizer effect in the future.

Is photosynthetic enhancement sustained through three years of elevated CO2 exposure in 175-year-old Quercus robur?

Current carbon cycle models attribute rising atmospheric CO2 as the major driver of the increased terrestrial carbon sink, but with substantial uncertainties. The photosynthetic response of trees to elevated atmospheric CO2 is a necessary step, but not the only one, for sustaining the terrestrial carbon uptake, but can vary diurnally, seasonally and with duration of CO2 exposure. Hence, we sought to quantify the photosynthetic response of the canopy-dominant species, Quercus robur, in a mature deciduous forest to elevated CO2 (eCO2) (+150 μmol mol−1 CO2) over the first 3 years of a long-term free air CO2 enrichment facility at the Birmingham Institute of Forest Research in central England (BIFoR FACE). Over 3000 measurements of leaf gas exchange and related biochemical parameters were conducted in the upper canopy to assess the diurnal and seasonal responses of photosynthesis during the 2nd and 3rd year of eCO2 exposure. Measurements of photosynthetic capacity via biochemical parameters, derived from CO2 response curves, (Vcmax and Jmax) together with leaf nitrogen concentrations from the pre-treatment year to the 3rd year of eCO2 exposure, were examined. We hypothesized an initial enhancement in light-saturated net photosynthetic rates (Asat) with CO2 enrichment of ≈37% based on theory but also expected photosynthetic capacity would fall over the duration of the study. Over the 3-year period, Asat of upper-canopy leaves was 33 ± 8% higher (mean and standard error) in trees grown in eCO2 compared with ambient CO2 (aCO2), and photosynthetic enhancement decreased with decreasing light. There were no significant effects of CO2 treatment on Vcmax or Jmax, nor leaf nitrogen. Our results suggest that mature Q. robur may exhibit a sustained, positive response to eCO2 without photosynthetic downregulation, suggesting that, with adequate nutrients, there will be sustained enhancement in C assimilated by these mature trees. Further research will be required to understand the location and role of the additionally assimilated carbon.

Does a Large Ear Type Wheat Variety Benefit More From Elevated CO2 Than That From Small Multiple Ear-Type in the Quantum Efficiency of PSII Photochemistry?

Recently, several reports have suggested that the growth and grain yield of wheat are significantly influenced by high atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration (CO2) because of it photosynthesis enhancing effects. Moreover, it has been proposed that plants with large carbon sink size will benefit more from CO2 enrichment than those with small carbon sink size. However, this hypothesis is yet to be test in winter wheat plant. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the effect of elevated CO2 (eCO2) conditions on the quantum efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) photochemistry in large ear-type (cv. Shanhan 8675; greater ear C sink strength) and small multiple ear-type (cv. Early premium; greater vegetative C source strength) winter wheat varieties. The experiment was conducted in a free air CO2 enrichment (FACE) facility, and three de-excitation pathways of the primary reaction of PSII of flag leaf at the anthesis stage were evaluated under two CO2 concentrations (ambient [CO2], ∼415 μmol⋅mol–1, elevated [CO2], ∼550 μmol⋅mol–1) using a non-destructive technique of modulated chlorophyll fluorescence. Additionally, the grain yield of the two varieties was determined at maturity. Although elevated CO2 increased the quantum efficiency of PSII photochemistry (ΦPSII) of Shanhan 8675 (SH8675) flag leaves at the anthesis stage, the grain number per ear and 1,000-kernel weight were not significantly affected. In contrast, the ΦPSII of early premium (ZYM) flag leaves was significantly lower than that of SH8675 flag leaves at the anthesis stage, which was caused by an increase in the regulatory non-photochemical energy dissipation quantum (ΦNPQ) of PSII, suggesting that light energy absorbed by PSII in ZYM flag leaf was largely dissipated as thermal energy. The findings of our study showed that although SH8675 flag leaves exhibited higher C sink strength and quantum efficiency of PSII photochemistry at the anthesis stage, these factors alone do not ensure improved grain yield under eCO2 conditions.

Machine learning produces higher prediction accuracy than the Jarvis-type model of climatic control on stomatal conductance in a dryland wheat agro-ecosystem

We compared Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Random Forest (RF) machine learning approaches with the widely used Jarvis-type phenomenological model for predicting stomatal conductance (gs) in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) using historical measurements collected in the Australian Grains Free-Air CO2 Enrichment (AGFACE) facility. The machine learning-based methods produced greater accuracy than the Jarvis-type model in predicting gs from leaf age, atmospheric [CO2], photosynthetically active radiation, vapour pressure deficit, temperature, time of day, and soil water availability (i.e. phenological and environmental variables determining gs). The R2 was 0.76 for the Jarvis-type but 0.92 for SVM and 0.97 for RF machine learning-based models, with a calculated RMSE of 0.292 mol m−2 s−1 in the Jarvis-type compared to 0.129 mol m−2 s−1 in SVM and 0.081 mol m−2 s−1 in RF. The machine learning models, however, needed large datasets for training to achieve statistical significance, and do not offer the same opportunity to provide physiological insights through a statistically testable hypothesis. These results show that using the machine-learning based methods can achieve high prediction accuracy of gs that is especially important when incorporated into larger models, but their ability to extrapolate beyond observed data ranges will need to be assessed before they could be considered in place of the physical model.

BIFoR FACE: Water–soil–vegetation–atmosphere data from a temperate deciduous forest catchment, including under elevated CO2

AbstractThe ecosystem services provided by forests modulate runoff generation processes, nutrient cycling and water and energy exchange between soils, vegetation and atmosphere. Increasing atmospheric CO2 affects many linked aspects of forest and catchment function in ways we do not adequately understand. Global levels of atmospheric CO2 will be around 40% higher in 2050 than current levels, yet estimates of how water and solute fluxes in forested catchments will respond to increased CO2 are highly uncertain. The Free Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) facility of the University of Birmingham's Institute of Forest Research (BIFoR) is the only FACE in mature deciduous forest. The site specializes in fundamental studies of the response of whole ecosystem patches of mature, deciduous, temperate woodland to elevated CO2 (eCO2). Here, we describe a dataset of hydrological parameters – seven weather parameters at each of three heights and four locations, shallow soil moisture and temperature, stream hydrology and CO2 enrichment – retrieved at high frequency from the BIFoR FACE catchment.

Responses of rice qualitative characteristics to elevated carbon dioxide and higher temperature: implications for global nutrition.

Protein and some minerals of rice seed are negatively affected by projected carbon dioxide (CO2 ) levels. However, an in-depth assessment of rice quality that encompasses both CO2 and temperature for a wide range of nutritional parameters is not available. Using a free-air CO2 enrichment facility with temperature control, we conducted a field experiment with two levels of CO2 (ambient; ambient + 200 ppm) and two levels of temperature (ambient; ambient + 1.5°C). An in-depth examination of qualitative factors indicated a variable nutritional response. For total protein, albumin, glutelin, and prolamin, elevated CO2 reduced seed concentrations irrespective of temperature. Similarly, several amino acids declined further as a function of higher temperature and elevated CO2 relative to elevated CO2 alone. Higher temperature increased the lipid percentage of seed; however, elevated CO2 reduced the overall lipid content. At the nutrient elements level, whereas elevated CO2 reduced certain elements, a combination of CO2 and temperature could compensate for CO2 reductions but was element dependent. Overall, these data are, at present, the most detailed analysis of rising CO2 /temperature on the qualitative characteristics of rice. They indicate that climate change is likely to significantly impact the nutritional integrity of rice, with subsequent changes in human health on a global basis. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Response of rice yield traits to elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration and its interaction with cultivar, nitrogen application rate and temperature: A meta-analysis of 20 years FACE studies

The Free Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) facility simulates future high CO2 environment in an open field, and is considered the best approach to assess the actual response of crop production to climate change. This meta-analysis synthesizes all studies conducted under FACE conditions on rice yield response to elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration ([CO2]) and its interaction with cultivar, nitrogen application rate and temperature. On average, elevated [CO2] enhanced rice yield by 16.2%, which resulted from positive response of each yield component. The yield enhancement by elevated [CO2] of hybrid rice (24.7%) was significantly greater than conventional rice (14.2%), and among conventional rice cultivars, indica rice had a larger yield response (20.4%) than japonica rice (12.7%). The superior performance of hybrid and indica rice under FACE conditions was mainly attributed to the larger increase in spikelet density. The response of rice yield to elevated [CO2] varied with nitrogen supply. The maximum increase of 21.1% occurred at the nitrogen application rate of 21–30 g m−2. Both insufficient and excess nitrogen supply negate yield increase by FACE but through different approaches. Elevated [CO2] increased rice yield by 16.7% at ambient temperature but only 10.1% at elevated temperature (1–2 °C); The smaller yield increase at elevated temperature was due to the negative response of filled grain percentage and grain mass. In conclusion, atmospheric CO2 concentration projected in the middle of this century will enhance rice yield mainly through the increase of spikelet density, whereas the magnitude of CO2 fertilizer effect will be affected by the cultivar, nitrogen application rate and temperature.

Metabarcoding mites: Three years of elevated CO2 has no effect on oribatid assemblages in a Eucalyptus woodland

Elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations (eCO2) are known to significantly impact aboveground vegetation, with cascading effects on belowground systems. However, the effects of altered biogeochemical and hydrological cycles on belowground faunal assemblages remain unclear. Oribatid mites are abundant and hyperdiverse litter decomposers, with the potential to act as bioindicators of ecosystem disturbance. Here, we assessed oribatid mite assemblages under ambient and eCO2 (ambient +150 ppm) at the Eucalyptus Free-Air CO2 Enrichment (EucFACE) facility using high-throughput sequencing of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase 1 (COI) gene. Our aims were to i) quantify the effect of eCO2 on mite abundance and diversity, and ii) evaluate metabarcoding as a reliable approach for the rapid assessment of oribatid mite assemblages. Three years of eCO2 exposure resulted in lower soil pH but had no significant impact on mite abundances or oribatid mite assemblage structure. Instead, mite densities were found to correlate negatively with soil NH4+, while oribatid species richness using both morphological and metabarcoding datasets were positively correlated with total soil nitrogen content. Additionally, metabarcoding showed that oribatid mite assemblage structure was correlated with total soil carbon and nitrogen content, and soil pH. However, dissimilarity matrices based on the two approaches were not correlated, indicating that metabarcoding can be used as a proxy for shifts in assemblage structure but cannot be directly compared with morphological datasets. This study demonstrates how metabarcoding can rapidly assess belowground assemblages, providing a useful monitoring tool under current and future climate scenarios.

Impact of high atmospheric CO2 concentrations on the seasonality of water-related processes, gas exchange, and carbohydrate metabolism in coffee trees under field conditions

Increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations ([CO2]) are unequivocal, widespread, and responsible for increased mean global temperatures and altered precipitation patterns. In this context, among the topics that need to be better understood are the changes in the water-related processes and gas exchange properties of plants grown under these conditions. Notably, the effects of climate change on coffee (Coffea spp.) production are particularly concerning given the importance of this commodity. Especially, it has been reported that coffee trees exhibit better photosynthetic efficiency when grown at higher [CO2] levels. In order to elucidate the mechanisms involved with this response, the seasonality of water-related processes, gas exchange, and carbohydrate metabolism were investigated using C. arabica var. Red Catuai grown at ambient and high [CO2] under field conditions, at a free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE) facility for coffee, in Brazil. The trees were evaluated fortnightly, from November to February (hot and rainy—summer) and from June to September (cold and dry—winter). It was found that C. arabica trees grown under high [CO2] conditions exhibited increased photosynthetic rates (averaging 121% higher in summer and 45% higher in winter) in both seasons, without displaying any significant changes in the seasonal photosynthesis pattern. Additionally, there was a tendency for the coffee trees grown at high [CO2] to exhibit increased levels of soluble carbohydrates, organic acids, and amino acids in the leaves. Our findings suggest that coffee trees adapt to increased [CO2] through increased photosynthetic rates, enhanced stomatal conductance regulation, and augmented carbohydrate and organic acid synthesis. It is plausible that these features could help mitigate the effects caused by climate change.

Early vigour in wheat: Could it lead to more severe terminal drought stress under elevated atmospheric [CO2 ] and semi-arid conditions?

Early vigour in wheat is a trait that has received attention for its benefits reducing evaporation from the soil surface early in the season. However, with the growth enhancement common to crops grown under elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations (e[CO2 ]), there is a risk that too much early growth might deplete soil water and lead to more severe terminal drought stress in environments where production relies on stored soil water content. If this is the case, the incorporation of such a trait in wheat breeding programmes might have unintended negative consequences in the future, especially in dry years. We used selected data from cultivars with proven expression of high and low early vigour from the Australian Grains Free Air CO2 Enrichment (AGFACE) facility, and complemented this analysis with simulation results from two crop growth models which differ in the modelling of leaf area development and crop water use. Grain yield responses to e[CO2 ] were lower in the high early vigour group compared to the low early vigour group, and although these differences were not significant, they were corroborated by simulation model results. However, the simulated lower response with high early vigour lines was not caused by an earlier or greater depletion of soil water under e[CO2 ] and the mechanisms responsible appear to be related to an earlier saturation of the radiation intercepted. Whether this is the case in the field needs to be further investigated. In addition, there was some evidence that the timing of the drought stress during crop growth influenced the effect of e[CO2 ] regardless of the early vigour trait. There is a need for FACE investigations of the value of traits for drought adaptation to be conducted under more severe drought conditions and variable timing of drought stress, a risky but necessary endeavour.

Decomposition analysis on soybean productivity increase under elevated CO2 using 3-D canopy model reveals synergestic effects of CO2 and light in photosynthesis.

Understanding how climate change influences crop productivity helps in identifying new options to increase crop productivity. Soybean is the most important dicotyledonous seed crop in terms of planting area. Although the impacts of elevated atmospheric [CO2] on soybean physiology, growth and biomass accumulation have been studied extensively, the contribution of different factors to changes in season-long whole crop photosynthetic CO2 uptake [gross primary productivity (GPP)] under elevated [CO2] have not been fully quantified. A 3-D canopy model combining canopy 3-D architecture, ray tracing and leaf photosynthesis was built to: (1) study the impacts of elevated [CO2] on soybean GPP across a whole growing season; (2) dissect the contribution of different factors to changes in GPP; and (3) determine the extent, if any, of synergism between [CO2] and light on changes in GPP. The model was parameterized from measurements of leaf physiology and canopy architectural parameters at the soybean Free Air CO2 Enrichment (SoyFACE) facility in Champaign, Illinois. Using this model, we showed that both a CO2 fertilization effect and changes in canopy architecture contributed to the large increase in GPP while acclimation in photosynthetic physiological parameters to elevated [CO2] and altered leaf temperature played only a minor role in the changes in GPP. Furthermore, at early developmental stages, elevated [CO2] increased leaf area index which led to increased canopy light absorption and canopy photosynthesis. At later developmental stages, on days with high ambient light levels, the proportion of leaves in a canopy limited by Rubisco carboxylation increased from 12.2 % to 35.6 %, which led to a greater enhancement of elevated [CO2] to GPP. This study develops a new method to dissect the contribution of different factors to responses of crops under climate change. We showed that there is a synergestic effect of CO2 and light on crop growth under elevated CO2 conditions.

Effect of heat wave on N2 fixation and N remobilisation of lentil (Lens culinaris MEDIK) grown under free air CO2 enrichment in a mediterranean-type environment.

The stimulatory effect of elevated [CO2 ] (e[CO2 ]) on crop production in future climates is likely to be cancelled out by predicted increases in average temperatures. This effect may become stronger through more frequent and severe heat waves, which are predicted to increase in most climate change scenarios. Whilst the growth and yield response of some legumes grown under the interactive effect of e[CO2 ] and heat waves has been studied, little is known about how N2 fixation and overall N metabolism is affected by this combination. To address these knowledge gaps, two lentil genotypes were grown under ambient [CO2 ] (a[CO2 ], ~400µmol·mol-1 ) and e[CO2 ] (~550µmol·mol-1 ) in the Australian Grains Free Air CO2 Enrichment facility and exposed to a simulated heat wave (3-day periods of high temperatures ~40°C) at flat pod stage. Nodulation and concentrations of water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC), total free amino acids, N and N2 fixation were assessed following the imposition of the heat wave until crop maturity. Elevated [CO2 ] stimulated N2 fixation so that total N2 fixation in e[CO2 ]-grown plants was always higher than in a[CO2 ], non-stressed control plants. Heat wave triggered a significant decrease in active nodules and WSC concentrations, but e[CO2 ] had the opposite effect. Leaf N remobilization and grain N improved under interaction of e[CO2 ] and heat wave. These results suggested that larger WSC pools and nodulation under e[CO2 ] can support post-heat wave recovery of N2 fixation. Elevated [CO2 ]-induced accelerated leaf N remobilisation might contribute to restore grain N concentration following a heat wave.

Limited carbon inputs from plants into soils in arid ecosystems: a study of changes in the δ13C in the soil-root interface

The tracing of C assimilation and the subsequent partitioning among plant organs has been a central focus of studies utilising Free Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) facilities. The approach makes use of the fossil origin of this carbon, which is depleted in 13C. However, there is little data for desert environments. The Nevada Desert FACE Facility (NDFF), located in the Mojave Desert, has been one of the main facilities for the study of C dynamics in arid ecosystems and how they respond to rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations. In this experiment, we studied the incorporation of fixed CO2 during the previous two years (detectable by its lower δ13C) in the soil fraction surrounding roots. The soil was collected monthly in direct vicinity to the roots during a complete growth season, at two depths (5 and 15 cm). Soil samples were dried and fractionated by size (> 50 μm and 50 μm), δ13C values ranged between −1 and − 2‰ for carbonates and between −23 and − 25‰ for soil organic matter. These values did not significantly change throughout the experiment and were not affected by depth (5 or 15 cm). In contrast, δ13C values for both organic and inorganic carbon in the fine fraction ( 50 μm). The δ13C values for organic C ranged mostly between −20‰ and − 27‰, and were roughly maintained throughout the sampling period. For inorganic C, the δ13C values were mostly between 0‰ and − 15‰, and tended to become less negative during the course of the sampling period. Overall the effect of [CO2] on δ13C values of either organic or inorganic carbon was not significant for any experimental condition (plant species, soil depth, soil fraction). Little or no signs of recently fixed CO2 (13C-depleted) were detected in the soils close to the roots, in the coarse fraction (> 50 μm), the fine fraction (< 50 μm), the organic matter, or in carbonates. This indicates a slow C turnover in the studied soils, which can result from a highly conservative use of photoassimilates by plants, including a very low release of organic matter into the soil in the form of dead roots or root exudates, and from a conservative use of available C reserves.

High mesophyll conductance in the high-yielding rice cultivar Takanari quantified with the combined gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence measurements under free-air CO2 enrichment

ABSTRACTAn effective strategy for increasing crop production is increasing the rate of photosynthesis. In this study, we conducted gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence measurements for a high-yielding rice cultivar, Takanari, to identify the leaf physiological properties that contribute to high capacity for photosynthesis of the uppermost leaves before (panicle initiation stage) and after heading (grain-filling stage) in the Tsukuba free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE) facility. The higher photosynthesis rate of Takanari compared with that of the commonly cultivated cultivar, Koshihikari, was mainly attributed to the greater stomatal conductance for CO2 (gsc) at the panicle initiation stage and to the greater mesophyll conductance (gm) at the grain-filling stage in both current and elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations [CO2]. Takanari had a higher level of leaf nitrogen content (Nl) compared with Koshihikari at the grain-filling stage, which led to greater gm and maximum carboxylation rate (Vc,max), but Nl alone did not explain the variations of gm within the variety. A clear correlation was found between Vc,max and Nl. Calculating Vc,max taking gm into consideration removed the artifact of Vc,max25 in relation to Nl that was observed when gm was assumed to be infinite. Our results emphasize the need to separate the roles of Vc,max and gm to accurately understand the ecophysiological processes that control leaf photosynthesis in Takanari.

Genotypic response of wheat under semi-arid conditions showed no specific responsive traits when grown under elevated CO2

ABSTRACTAtmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) is predicted to reach 550 µmol mol−1 by 2050, increasing from the current ~410 µmol mol−1 concentration, and this will have an impact on wheat production and grain quality. Genetic differences in response to future CO2 levels, which might be exploited for higher yield and sustainable grain quality, were investigated. Twelve diverse genotypes (11 wheat lines and 1 triticale cultivar) were grown in the Australian Grains Free-Air CO2 Enrichment facility under ambient CO2 (~400 µmol mol−1) and elevated CO2 (eCO2) concentrations (550 µmol mol−1) in 2014 and 2015 to test for different responses to CO2. Genotype response to eCO2 for the parameters measured showed strong linear relationships. eCO2 increased plant height (11%), aboveground biomass (31%) and grain yield (32%) as means across all genotypes. Yield response to eCO2 was driven by increases in spike number and weight. The increase in CO2 caused a mean 10% decrease in grain nitrogen content and increased grain weight by 7%. Measures of bread dough quality decreased due to eCO2. Genotypes with large yield response did not show larger than mean reductions in grain %N. The apparent near-universal decline in grain %N under eCO2 might be compensated for by selection of genotypes that are highly responsive to increasing yields but resist dramatic declines in grain %N. Selection for responsiveness to eCO2 for yield and grain %N are likely to involve a range of co-related characteristics that balance sink and source relationships.
