New Frontiers in Bioinorganic Chemistry: A Tribute to Harry Gray on his 80th Birthday

When I was asked to serve as guest editor for a special issue of the Israel Journal of Chemistry dedicated to my close friend and colleague Harry Gray, on the occasion of his 80th birthday, the idea of organizing the issue around the theme of “New Frontiers in Bioinorganic Chemistry” immediately came to mind. Harry is without a doubt one of the pioneers of those frontiers, most of whom (in the US, at least), like him, came to the field from more traditional inorganic areas.

The life and career of Fred Basolo (1920–2007), dean of American coordination chemistry, 1983 President of the American Chemical Society, and contributor to inorganic chemistry, coordination chemistry, physical chemistry, and chemical education over a span of more than half a century, are discussed in this obituary-tribute.

FRED BASOLO DIES AT 87

FRED BASOLO , Charles E. & Emma H. Morrison Emeritus Professor in the chemistry department at Northwestern University, died on Feb. 27 of pneumonia. was 87. An emeritus member of the American Chemical Society, Basolo joined ACS in 1942, chaired the Division of Inorganic Chemistry in 1970, and served as ACS president in 1983. Fred was an absolutely wonderful mentor who had profound impact on the course of inorganic says Harry B. Gray, former student of Basolo's and currently professor of chemistry at California Institute of Technology. He enormously influenced our lives and our science. Basolo was a man with an encyclopedialike mind for chemistry, quick smile and wink, and hearty laugh, says Alvin L. Crumbliss, another one of Basolo's former Ph.D. students, now chemistry professor at Duke University. How Linus Pauling Finally Got the Priestley Medal of the American Chemical Society

Late in 1981 I started firming up plans for a symposium marking the 250th anniversary of the birth of Joseph Priestley in 1733. The symposium was scheduled for the 1983 Fall Meeting of the American Chemical Society to be held in Washington D. C. Because of Priestley's wide-ranging interests and activities, the speakers were to include not only chemists and historians but also a political scientist, a grammarian, and a Unitarian minister. The closing session was to open with Melvin Calvin speaking on "Artificial Photosynthesis"-a phenomenon Priestley was the first to observe, albeit somewhat confusedly. Next came Fred Basolo, then president of the American Chemical Society, on "Synthetic Oxygen Carriers of Biological Interest"-Priestley had abeen among the first to remark on the role of dephlogisticated air (oxygen) in the interconversion of venous and arterial blood.

Council Acts on Petitions, Other Matters in Washington

Three trumpeters sounded a ceremonial fanfare just before the president stepped to center stage and called to order the session of representatives. That, unlikely as it sounds, is how the recent ACS Council meeting in Washington, D.C., began. The fanfare caught most councilors by surprise, but it served its purpose of getting the 330 or so councilors seated quickly so the meeting could get under way. During the three-hour-and-40-minute meeting that followed, presided over by ACS president Fred Basolo, the council adopted all four petitions submitted to amend the ACS by-laws and constitution. In addition, it acted on a variety of other matters (C&EN, Sept. 5, page 5). The bylaw amendments adopted by the council require confirmation by the ACS Board of Directors before becoming effective, and the one amendment to the constitution must first be ratified by the ACS membership before taking effect.
