Product Development and Design Framework Based on Interactive Innovation in the Metaverse Perspective

Based on the theory of user needs and the product development mode and framework of mobile Internet interactive innovation, a new “reality → virtual → reality” interactive innovation product development mode is constructed. It draws on the unique characteristics, systematic technical system, and comprehensive scientific and technological layout of the Metaverse. On this basis, a framework for product development and design based on interactive innovation from the Metaverse perspective is innovatively proposed. In the Metaverse scenario, interactive innovation knowledge can be easily and effectively transformed into design knowledge, and all groups of users truly participate in the whole process of product design. Moreover, the development of interactive innovative products in the Metaverse scenario can be combined with artificial intelligence (AI) technology to further automate the statistical analysis of user needs and preferences so as to meet the dynamic needs of users and accurately develop products that fit user needs and enterprise standards. In addition, users, designers, and enterprises can make joint decisions on product design solutions and development forms, and the Metaverse technology can also optimize the products with continuous iteration and obtain the optimal solutions. An automotive case study illustrates the feasibility and effectiveness of the model for product development innovation and enterprise digital transformation.

Enhancing agile product development with scrum methodologies: A detailed exploration of implementation practices and benefits

This study conducts a systematic literature review to examine the implementation, challenges, and ongoing evolution of Scrum methodologies within Agile product development frameworks. Aimed at understanding how Scrum can be effectively tailored to meet the needs of diverse organizational contexts, especially in scenarios involving remote and distributed teams, the research also seeks to uncover the trajectory of Agile practices' continuous evolution. Employing a rigorous methodology, the review analyzed peer-reviewed articles and conference papers from key academic databases, including IEEE Xplore, ACM Digital Library, and Scopus, published between 2013 and 2024. The selection was based on relevance to Scrum practices, empirical evidence, and theoretical contributions to the field of Agile development. Key insights from the study underscore the critical role of Scrum in enhancing collaboration, flexibility, and responsiveness in product development processes. Challenges identified include the necessity of overcoming organizational resistance and the importance of customizing Scrum practices to align with specific project and team dynamics. Notably, the research highlights Scrum's adaptability in supporting distributed teams through strategic communication and trust-building measures. Furthermore, the study points to the integration of Scrum with DevOps and its application beyond software development as indicators of its evolutionary potential within Agile methodologies. Finally, the study offers strategic recommendations for organizations adopting Scrum, emphasizing cultural adaptation, continuous training, and practice customization. It also suggests avenues for future research, particularly in exploring Scrum's integration with emerging technologies and broader industry applications, contributing valuable insights into enhancing Agile product development efficacy through Scrum methodologies. Aesthetic Improvement: Innovating the Design and Development Framework for Engineering Products

One of the primary issues with many product design and development processes today is to have a good balance between the elements of form and function. While all products must be able to perform their intended functions, considerations of aesthetic features are also necessary for them to be accepted as a good quality design. However, most available design and development processes of engineering products have been more focused on achieving the functional aspects and tend to treat the aesthetic aspects as less crucial features. This approach has led to many failed functional products in the market as their physical design lacks appealing factors to the targeted customers. To improve the situation, a new product design and development framework is proposed in this study to better facilitate designers or engineers in creating an all-rounded quality product design. This new method is developed based on the findings from a conducted survey among engineering students, who are future product design engineers, to identify and resolve issues with current methods that they use for their design tasks. All in all, the new proposed method is essentially tailored to offer a comprehensive guide for developing beautiful and useful products based on a semantics design approach.

Supervised multilabel classification techniques for categorising customer requirements during the conceptual phase in the new product development

Abstract The research aims to provide the decision-maker with a framework for determining customer requirements during product development. The proposed framework is based on sentiment analysis and supervised multilabel classification techniques. Therefore, the proposed technique can categorise customer reviews based on the “product design criteria” label and the “sentiment of the review” label. To achieve the research goal, the research presented in this article uses the existing product development framework presented in the literature. The modification is conducted especially in the conceptual stage of product development, in which the voice of the customer or a customer review is obtained from the scraping, and a multilabel classification technique is performed to categorise customer reviews. The proposed framework is tested by using the set data on women’s clothing reviews from an e-commerce site downloaded from www.kaggle.com based on data by Agarap (2018). The result shows that the proposed framework can categorise customer reviews. The research presented in this paper has contributed by proposing a technique based on sentiment analysis and multilabel classification that can be used to categorise customers during product development. The research presented in this paper answers one of the concerns in the categorisation of needs raised by Shabestari et al. (2019), namely, the unclear rules or main attributes of a requirement that make these needs fall into certain categories. Categorising customer requirements allows decision-makers to determine the direction of product development to meet customer needs.

Empowering Product Teams to Advance Inclusive Language and Mitigate Hateful Speech on Social Media Products

As social media use proliferates, so does hateful language on such platforms among users. How might product teams be empowered to tackle hateful speech and promote inclusive language proactively among users? We developed an intervention that targets the organizational culture of tech companies and their product teams as a driver for change. More specifically, the intervention aimed to advance inclusive language practices within product teams, while introducing product development frameworks for advancing inclusive language and mitigating hateful language among social media product users. For this study, we partnered with a large U.S.-headquartered tech firm that owns several social media products to develop and pilot the intervention. The intervention was implemented with 238 participants—representing employees of the firm across several global locations, with particular representation from the United States—in seven workshops. Forty participants were tracked semilongitudinally across three surveys—prior to the intervention, immediately after, and 4 months after. Two participants participated in in-depth interviews 6 months after the intervention. Survey data were submitted to ordinal regression models that examined difference in workshop attendees’ confidence levels across the three time periods. Findings reveal positive impacts over time among product teams in regard to enhanced agency in advancing inclusive language and mitigating hateful speech among users. More specifically, confidence levels to guide one’s team in preventing or mitigating harmful language among product users significantly increased by 13.6% ( p < .0001) from before the intervention to both postworkshop surveys. Confidence levels to guide one’s team in enhancing inclusive language among users significantly increased by 18.1% ( p < .0001) pre- to postworkshop. Positive correlations are present between the measures. Lastly, qualitative responses in the surveys and interviews express appreciation of learning gained in the workshops, but also the need to continue such interventions as an effort to maintain critical understandings of inclusive language practices.

Amphiphilic Block Copolymer Nanostructures as a Tunable Delivery Platform: Perspective and Framework for the Future Drug Product Development.

Nanoformulation of active payloads or pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) has always been an area of interest to achieve targeted, sustained, and efficacious delivery. Various delivery platforms have been explored, but loading and delivery of APIs have been challenging because of the chemical and structural properties of these molecules. Polymersomes made from amphiphilic block copolymers (ABCPs) have shown enormous promise as a tunable API delivery platform and confer multifold advantages over lipid-based systems. For example, a COVID booster vaccine comprising polymersomes encapsulating spike protein (ACM-001) has recently completed a Phase I clinical trial and provides a case for developing safe drug products based on ABCP delivery platforms. However, several limitations need to be resolved before they can reach their full potential. In this Perspective, we would like to highlight such aspects requiring further development for translating an ABCP-based delivery platform from a proof of concept to a viable commercial product.

Green product development framework: empirical evidence from Chinese automotive supply chains

PurposeThe study aims to develop and test a supply chain wide green product development framework of focal firms and their major suppliers, in the context of the Chinese automotive industry.Design/methodology/approachAn in-depth case studies approach is adopted for this study. Three automotive sector upstream supply chains involving 17 firms and 51 experts as respondents were interviewed on the importance and implementation effectiveness of 6Rs (reduce, redesign, recover, remanufacture, reuse and recycle) across the manufacturer and their respective tier 1 and tier 2 suppliers.FindingsThe results indicate that the Chinese automotive sector supply chains are mainly focused on “reduce” practices with immediate environmental and economic benefits. The investigated firms however had future implementation plans for “redesign” and “recovery” practices to become comprehensive in green product development (GPD).Research limitations/implicationsThe study facilitates automotive firms, industry policymakers and researchers the understanding of incorporating comprehensive GSCM practices across the upstream supply chain to achieve circularity. The study focused on upstream supply chain due to the concentration of major production practices in this section of the supply chain. However, the downstream supply chain equally deserve attention as well as the need to understand the mediating and moderating roles of the different Rs to tease out the pros and cons of achieving overall environmental sustainability.Originality/valueThere are very limited studies on comprehensive GPD for achieving optimal GSCM and sustainability. By simultaneous looking at a focal firm and its upstream supply chains GSCM practices, this study addresses a system-wide comprehensive GPD issues from implementation of 6Rs perspectives in the supply chain.

An interactive and integrated framework for collaborative product development in cloud manufacturing using STEP standard-based ontology model.

Due to the growing competition of firms in manufacturing industries, the enhancement of the design of new products for quick and collaborative interaction of stakeholders is inevitable. A customer-oriented approach during the enhancing of product design requires the support of various stakeholders' collaboration from their functionality perspectives. Accordingly, manufacturing firms try to increase the product quality through the continuous collaboration and speeding up of the design process. Moreover, new manufacturing paradigms like cloud manufacturing require global and distributed collaboration of stakeholders. One competitive key necessity for firms is the integration of stakeholders in the design and production stages. This article has proposed an interactive and integrated framework for a cloud collaborative manufacturing system. The proposed framework uses the international STEP standard which ensures data integrity in the whole product development processes. The framework enables stakeholders to work collaboratively and interactively in their disciplines, while it also ensures coherency of modifications to avoid conflicts. The proposed model is introduced using an improvisational design method based on the STEP standard to create an interactive platform with a service-oriented approach and supports stakeholders for their own semantics. In addition to examining the needs of an interactive system, the article provides an architecture for implementation of this perspective. A comprehensive case study is designed to show the capabilities of the proposed framework.

Designing Novel, Valuable, and Marketable Products from Waste Sedge Plant Fiber Residues

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine how discarded sedge plant fibers can be converted into new market-oriented products through product design and development. 
 
 Theoretical framework: The product design and development method, researchers work directly with the community as partners to experiment with materials using simple technology and design prototypes. The goods were then evaluated for market viability and SWOT to determine if they met market demands. These techniques target novel, collaborative, value-added, and waste goods.
 
 Design/Methodology/Approach: The mixed-methods case study followed Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR). Market assessments provided quantitative data. The community business served 140 Baby Boomers and Gen Z customers, ages 20–50, and sampled 103 consumers. The data collection instruments included site surveys, interviews, focus groups, experiments, recordkeeping, surveys, and SWOT analysis.
 
 Findings: This study identifies uniquely developed products that are ecologically conscious and reduce global impacts. The value of waste sedge plant fibers from the production of reed mats can be added, redesigned, and developed into marketable products. The two prototypes (the Bannock basket and the berry basket) met market demand in terms of material suitability, uniqueness and attractiveness, competitive price, commercial possibilities, exquisiteness, and utility. The SWOT analysis revealed potential marketing opportunities for the developed products. 
 
 Research, practical and social implications: The study reveals these significant implications. Practically, this study offers alternatives to traditional methods that can be used to overcome the current economic and environmental barriers to reducing waste and getting more value out of it. Conceptually and methodologically, it offers a technique to rebuild the framework of product design and development from waste sedge plant fiber remnants into new, value-added, and market-oriented products. Socially, this study yields the production process knowledge transfer to community levels nationwide. Economically, the developed products implicate viability of community-level OTOP establishments nationally.
 
 Originality/Value: This is the first time that the waste sedge plant fibers from the production of reed mats have been designed and developed into marketable products. This research is part of a paradigm shift in redesigned product design and development that is critical for the economic and environmental sustainability of communities.

New product development process and case studies for deep-tech academic research to commercialization

This research proposes a new product development (NPD) framework for innovation-driven deep-tech research to commercialization and tested it with three case studies of different exploitation methods. The proposed framework, called Augmented Stage-Gate, integrates the next-generation Agile Stage-Gate development process with lean startup and design thinking approaches. The framework consists of six stages and five gates and focuses on critical thinking to help entrepreneurs avoid psychological traps and make the right decisions. Early activities focus on scouting for potential socioeconomically impactful deep-tech research, developing a business case, market analysis, and strategy for problem–solution fit, and then, moving to a build–measure–learn activity with a validated learning feedback loop. Next, suitable exploitation methods are decided using weight factor analysis, developing intellectual property (IP) strategy, completing the university technology transfer process, and participating in fundraising. To pass each gate, the committee board members, consisting of tech, business, IP and regulatory, and domain experts, will evaluate the passing criteria to decide Go/No-Go. Applying the framework to the case studies results in successful university research commercialization. The model, case study, and lessons learned in this paper can be useful for other deep-tech incubator programs to successfully launch deep-tech research for commercialization. The case studies’ positive outcomes validate the Augmented Stage-Gate framework, yet their success is not entirely guaranteed due to external factors like regulatory constraints, entrepreneur characteristics, timing, and the necessary ecosystem or infrastructure, particularly in emerging markets. These factors should be taken into account for future research purposes.

CLASSIFICATION OF METHODOLOGIES FOR DESIGN FOR CIRCULAR ECONOMY BASED ON A LITERATURE STUDY

AbstractGlobal resource consumption is steadily rising. One option for stopping this upward trend is to reduce material consumption in general. With economics built for growth, this is not a practical path to pursue. Another recently explored alternative is the paradigm shift from a linear economy to a circular economy. The most common concept among practitioners and academics comprises the 6R's: Reuse, Repair, Refurbish, Remanufacture, Repurpose, and Recycle. In addition to business cases and supply chains that have been adapted to the circular economy, the products themselves must be circular. Developers face the challenge of developing novel products without appropriate experience from previous tasks.This paper takes up the challenge of gathering relevant methods in the context of circular product development. A classification with regard to the required input data and use case shall help users effectively and efficiently find development methods suitable for their given development task. With the categorization via a product development framework it is pointed out in which phase existing methods support users and where a lack of support occurs.

Synchronizing decisions: A dynamic programming, real option framework for New Product Development with stage-to-stage correlations

Much research has investigated the application of real options to staged, new product development projects. Still, this literature has not addressed an important intuition�that bad projects may stay bad. A new product development project or a technology startup backed venture capital may include stage-to-stage dependencies. Its �state� at one gate may influence the transition probabilities at later gates. We develop a novel real option model that captures this intuition using dynamic programming and serial correlations. In a subsequent paper, we introduce partial derivatives similar to the Greeks that we named �control maps�. These control maps will assist the firm�s management to assess the financial impact of resource reallocations to project success factors. Such reallocations have the intent of turning bad projects into good ones. Thus, the proposed framework enables management to synchronize its management decision with financial ones.

A study on design, development, optimization and validation of product development framework for humidifier chamber

The upper airways of the patients under Mechanical Ventilation (MV) cannot humidify the inspired air by themselves, while heat and moisture exchange remain the most important criteria. Insufficient humidification leads to multiple issues while humidifiers, the devices used to add water molecules, gas and temperature, are used in MVs. There is a need exists to develop a new humidifier that can achieve 99% humidity, cost-effective, adheres to ISO standards and compact with controlled design. The aim of the current study is to develop an optimized product development framework for designing the humidifier chamber and to define the product testing guidelines for verification and validation of the humidification chamber. By following a step-wise methodology, the researchers compared the existing samples in the market, conducted CFD analysis for optimization, developed the prototype and framed the guidelines for testing and validation of the humidification chamber. The study found the optimum specifications given herewith as per the outcomes; Inlet/Outlet (mm) should be 22 M, Compressible volume should be 300 ml, Maximum water capacity should be 130 ml while maximum peak flow should be 180 L/min. Further, the resistance to flow should be 10 cm of H2O and the diameter of chassis should be 120 mm. With the humidification chamber being made up of PP, PVC, Silicone and AL, the optimum weight of the chamber should be 125.6 g.

RANKING THE COMPLIANCE OF ISLAMIC BANKING HOME FINANCING PRODUCTS WITH MAQASID SHARIAH USING AHP

Compliance of Islamic banking products with Maqasid Shariah has been a never-ending debate. However, most discussions are merely explorative, descriptive and perceptive in nature. This article aims to evaluate two types of home financing products in Malaysia based on the Maqasid Shariah of the product development process in Islamic banks. To provide a more coherent and concrete decision, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) has been used. Bay’ Bithaman Ajil (sale with deferred payment) and Tawarruq (monetization) have been chosen to represent sale-based financing and Musharakah Mutanaqiṣah (diminishing partnership) represents partnership-based financing. The overall results demonstrated that partnership-based financing complied with the social requirements of MSPDF (Maqasid Shariah-based product development framework) at 87.5%, while sale-based financing was rated at 12.5%. The findings will assist Shariah advisors, Islamic finance product developers, economic analysts, financial engineers and policymakers to incorporate the relevant Shariah objectives in Islamic financial product development.

A Complexity-based Framework for Social Product Development

The development of new products using social technologies among defined crowds of individuals or groups, commonly known as Social Product Development (SPD), has become a growing trend in engineering design and manufacturing literature. This paper proposes an approach to studying the actors involved in SPD from a complexity science point of view. Specifically, we suggest that organizational efforts towards SPD must be concentrated on human and technological elements to achieve success in New Product Development (NPD). The paper explores the differences and similarities between the creation of new products and SPD and proposes a differentiated approach, based on complexity science for the different stages of NPD and SPD. Our findings show that SPD requires the integration of the complexity approach due to the combination of the knowledge, skills, and abilities of those involved during the development of new products. In addition, it is recommended that engineering design managers consider the importance of leadership styles, work structure, and organizational culture to achieve the expected outcomes of SPD.

Bayesian Methods in Human Drug and Biological Products Development in CDER and CBER.

The Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) and the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have been leaders in protecting and promoting the U.S. public health by helping to ensure that safe and effective drugs and biological products are available in the United States for those who need them. The null hypothesis significance testing approach, along with other considerations, is typically used to demonstrate the effectiveness of a drug or biological product. The Bayesian framework presents an alternative approach to demonstrate the effectiveness of a treatment. This article discusses the Bayesian framework for drug and biological product development, highlights key settings in which Bayesian approaches may be appropriate, and provides recent examples of the use of Bayesian approaches within CDER and CBER.

Enhancement of the LeanDfX Product Development Framework and Application to the Design of an AGV Structure

A product development framework called LeanDfX has been conceived at INEGI, aiming at organizing the product design and development process benefitting from lean thinking and DfX paradigms. The design of the metallic structure for an automated guided vehicle (AGV) focusing on its static, dynamic and fatigue characteristics was a recent opportunity to enhance and further develop the framework through the consideration and integration into the process of several existing tools such as FMEA (failure mode and effect analysis), QFD (quality function deployment) or fuzzy logic. This paper describes the integration of those tools in the LeanDfX framework and an application to the design of an AGV structure. The methodology presented involves systematic consideration of a substantial number of design requirements and more detailed product specification characterization. Such a number might be seen as delaying the development process, but the present case study showed that the inverse was true, thanks to the structured systematic approach and timely elimination of less desirable alternatives.
