The aim of the article. The article aims to assess the credibility of advertising treated as a form of communication between the company and the market. Among the many different areas of advertising analysis, the message's credibility is an important issue, although it is not in the mainstream of research. Analyses results.The credibility of advertising is the subject of analysis within the framework of business ethics or marketing ethics. It has its content and importance both in science and in everyday life. Beyond ethics, credibility is of interest to sociology and every discipline that describes human behavior and social relationships shaped by information and mutual communication. In economic sciences, it combines with the identity and image of a company, the reliability of its way of communicating marketing activities, and the assessment of financial statements' quality (credibility). Thus, the title problem of the article expresses a new and original scientific concern in advertising research. It has a significant cognitive meaning and significant practical consequences - shaping the transparency of marketing communication and business ethics. In terms of methodology, the article focuses on joint research conducted among marketing and management students at two universities: the Kyiv National University of Economics and the University of Economics in Krakow. This research is an expression of many years of scientific cooperation between the Departments of Marketing of both universities. The research has produced interesting and scientifically valuable results. They show the similarity and differentiation of students' opinions from both countries regarding the function and importance of advertising. We put these assessments into a common perspective of the credibility of the advertisement. It is a fundamental problem per se, both for the consumer and the seller, critical to assessing the effectiveness of advertising in the marketing communication system and for the formation of social behavior of e-consumers. Research shows that the eight primary forms of online advertising are rated relatively low. This observation is a common opinion of students from both countries. The views of celebrities and personalities of advertising campaigns were also considered unreliable. Research on the positive and negative functions and significance of advertising produced results that varied in detail. However, we emphasize the high convergence of opinions of both respondents on the impact of advertising on purchasing decisions and negative consequences on society and the promotion of consumerism. The conducted research shows that students from Ukraine show a more positive attitude to advertising than students from Poland, thus a slightly more significant, positive assessment of the credibility of the advertising message. In the context of the credibility of advertising, the question of the legitimacy of strict state intervention in the online advertising market was relevant. Representatives of both surveyed groups generally agree on the legality of state intervention and regulation of the advertising market, i.e., creating a modern, transparent advertising law system. This system will create a framework for legal advertising creation strategies, devoid of information asymmetry in the message and manipulation of consumer behavior. Conclusions and directions for further research. In conclusion, we emphasize the need to continue research on the multidimensional role of advertising in the modern market. The preliminary study results presented in the article are a premise for undertaking such research in the future in international teams of Polish and Ukrainian researchers.

The Internet at the Service of Society: Business Ethics, Rationality, and Responsibility

Serving the community is what the Internet — in the broad sense — does in many ways, within the knowledge society. The layers of its ontological structure — technology infrastructure, the Web, and the cloud computing and practical applications (apps) — are in principle at the service of society. This service is carried out by companies, which are ethically assessable insofar as they are “social subjects.” Their public service purpose at the three layers during the coronavirus lockdown is considered here.Within a framework of business ethics, this article looks deeply at companies as “social subjects.” They contribute decisively to a multilayered reality that reaches half of the world's population. The analysis of this network of networks is carried out through rationality and responsibility. Thus, this paper analyzes its ethical responsibility based on the social ontology of business firms and the ethical problems according to the kind of rationality involved in the companies — micro, meso or macro — in accordance with their goals. Then, from the perspective of service to society, this study reflects on business ethics of the Internet — in the broad sense — in two directions: 1) the need for evaluative rationality or rationality of ends, because instrumental rationality or rationality of means is insufficient for ethics, and 2) the importance of combining individual responsibility with social responsibility.

HEGEMONI LABA AKUNTANSI DALAM ETIKA BISNIS (KRITIK ANTONIO GRAMSCI)

This article uses Antonio Gramsci's hegemonic thinking to critically examine accounting earnings within the framework of business ethics. In the realm of accounting, critical scientists offer a new view as an alternative that can radically replace various current modes of accounting practice, especially aspects of injustice that are generated or supported by accounting.
 The practical view sees business as a purely profit making activity, even if profit is considered the sole main purpose of business. Currently there are concerns from many parties in Indonesia that the phenomenon of unethical business methods will develop. There is even an assumption that unethical business practices are legal, if you want to gain the maximum profit or profit according to economic principles. This paper aims to arouse our awareness that business success is not only determined by company profits and growth.
 The perpetuation of capitalist domination in accounting is supported by traditional intellectuals who use their hegemony in spreading these capitalist values.Therefore, counter-hegemony is needed as mentioned by Gramsci, namely organic intellectuals to free the people from the domination of hegemony of capitalism.

Ethical management and leadership: a conceptual paper and Korean example

Business ethics have become an important topic globally for both policy-makers and businesses. This paper first discusses the conceptual framework for business ethics followed by ethical management (EM) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) as well as relevant theories. Within this conceptual framework, Korea is used as a country context as to the development of EM and CSR. An important example of an ethical scandal is the major steel manufacturer, POSCO as it was held up as an exemplar and role model of ethical management. However, in 2015, it faced allegations that the engineering and construction overseas unit chief of its Vietnamese subsidiary created a slush fund by overstating payments to Vietnamese contractors. This conceptual paper discusses the factors that created this situation referring to the theory of connection. It locates the case in the EM and CSR literature and analyses what went wrong and what the parent company could have done to prevent this from happening.

Adam Smith's Vision of the Ethical Manager

In the field of business ethics, Adam Smith has generally been viewed with a measure of suspicion. Smith's famous invocation of the invisible hand - according to which self-interest promotes the greater good - has generally been seen as a fundamental challenge to a discipline committed to the opposite premise that the public interest cannot be advanced unless the egoism of economic actors is restrained by a more socially conscious mindset. To the extent that Adam Smith has been brought into the fold of the discipline, it has involved showing that his authority cannot be summoned to fully support the free market sceptics of business ethics. Little has thus far been done, however, to illustrate that Smith's moral writings actually contain the fundamentals of a business ethics teaching. This paper analyzes his moral thought with a view to inferring a Smithean framework of business ethics to guide managers. In sympathy with the field, Smith holds that self-interest ought to be subordinated to moral imperatives, even in the business world. Against the grain of the field, though, Smith rejects the principles of corporate social responsibility on the argument that benevolent impulses cannot be expected to prevail in the commercial arena. Instead of consciously trying to advance the social good, Smith's ideal manager will endeavor to personally live up to the standards enforced by an impartial spectator of his conduct. This internalized onlooker expects a limited degree of benevolence, a constant exercise of moderation, along with the occasional exhibition of magnanimity whenever challenging situations arise. Still, the overriding demand is for the manager to abide by the dictums of justice and prudence. While the Smithean inspired manager will never reach the pinnacle of virtue, they can do better than merely adopt enlightened self-interest as their lodestar.

Business ethics in TQM

PurposeThe objective of this research is to introduce and describe a conceptual framework of business ethics in TQM.Design/methodology/approachIn order to highlight the concepts proffered, a case study in the Swedish retail industry was conducted. The data that underpin the case illustration have been collected as part of a larger research project in the Swedish retail industry. This paper draws on and reports the findings from one case of the larger research project that has been used in this instance to inform the role of business ethics in TQM. The case illustration is based on a qualitative approach. The data were collected through interviews with leading executives in the corporation,FindingsBoth time and context become crucial parameters to manage the quality and spectrum zones of core values in the marketplace. In fact, the necessary quality management of business operations has to be performed without delay, minimising the damage. Therefore, the importance of business ethics becomes evident in TQM. In the long run, TQM will not succeed in business operations unless business ethics is considered in the core values to support the techniques and tools applied.Research limitations/implicationsThe model has only been tested by relating it to one case in the Swedish retail industry.Practical implicationsTQM is dependent on the contextual and evolutionary issues in the marketplace. Therefore, TQM should be interpreted as a continuous process. The importance of continuously monitoring the spectrum zones and qualities of core values in TQM should not be under‐estimated. Therefore, business ethics should always be present in TQM. Further research would benefit from other case studies of how business ethics benefits TQM. Therefore, the dynamics of business ethics in TQM should be further explored.Originality/valueBusiness ethics needs to be an essential consideration of any TQM process. This paper examines how an organisation can incorporate this task.

The Social Function of Business Ethics

Abstract:Business ethics serves the important social function of integrating business and society, by promoting the legitimacy of business operations, through critical reflection. Although the social function of business ethics is implicit in leading business ethics foundation theories, it has never been presented in a systematic way. This article sets out to fill this theoretical lacuna, and to explore the theoretical potentials of a functional approach to business ethics. Key concepts from Parsonian functionalistic sociology are applied to establish the social integrative function of business ethics. This produces a theoretical framework for business ethics that provides strong theoretical arguments against often-heard criticisms of business ethics. Many of these criticisms are ideological in nature, in that they systematically play down the importance of integrative functions in the business-society relationship, on the grounds of unrealistic assumptions about the performance of economic and bureaucratic institutions. However, business ethics itself can also become ideological, if it forgets that the conditions for the application of ethics to business are not always ideal as well.

The Moral Basis of Stakeholder Theory

Stakeholder theory is an important and commonly used framework for business ethics. Several of the most popular business ethics and business and society texts such as Archie Carroll's Business and Society: Ethics and Stakeholder Management (1993) and Joseph Weiss's Business Ethics: A Managerial, Stakeholder Approach (1994) rely on the concept. In the past two years, over two hundred articles on stakeholder theory have appeared in philosophical and business journals.1 In this paper I will examine the claim that businesses should consider the interests of stake holders, and question whether there is a moral basis for that claim. I will point out three approaches to stakeholder theory: prudence, agency, and deontological views. Of these, deontology has offered the strongest arguments for a normative stakeholder approach. However, on examination it turns out that deontology in this context relies on an embedded notion of corporate personhood. When this is made explicit, it both underwrites duties to some, but not all, stakeholders, and provides a way to distinguish between competing stakeholder claims.

Transforming Justice: A Conceptualization

Abstract:Rights, justice, and power raise many interesting questions. Why do such basic concepts as rights and justice have such different points of concern—equality, proportionality, medium rei (moderation or the middle of the thing itself without reference to the person using it)? Why are there such different perspectives in philosophy, theology, and law? Why is the notion of power in business ethics so isolated from the general discussion of applied justice in treatises on business contracts, employee relations, and in other related topics? Discussions of power seemed parallel with discussions of justice. The two did not seem to intersect.In this paper I shall argue that rights, power, and justice are interrelated. While natural rights are the basis for justice, rights cannot be realized nor justice become operative without power. I shall call this relationship and the theory underlying it “Transforming Justice.” One of the basic concerns of this article is to notice the lack of interaction between rights and power in the traditional theories of justice. Granted that for many philosophers it is sufficient to determine what is just. But the notion of justice as an active virtue that persons are to exercise in their dealings with others goes further. It touches the realities of life that every person experiences. Life does not separate rights from power. Reflection upon the current separation of rights from power both in theory and in action is analogous to the separation of the “sensory” from the “imaginative” in art and in life. The urge to devise a framework of justice that brings out the wholeness of its existential being is the underlying rationale for developing a theory of transforming justice. Another purpose for developing a theory of transforming justice is to suggest a conceptual framework of business ethics and corporate social responsibility that incorporates values, rights, power, and virtue. Authors and teachers approach these issues either from a value (or rights/justice) perspective or from the view that institutions respond only to those who exercise power (apart from legitimate claims). Thus, it is necessary for a conceptual framework to incorporate the dynamics of power and the qualifying aspects of rights or claims. A natural law approach to justice and rights argues that humans have certain basic rights that others, whether humans or institutions (regardless of source), are required to respect. Natural rights theory places the burden or duty on each individual to respect the rights of every other person. In addition, justice is usually defined by natural law theorists as “giving each person his or her due,” what is required by natural rights, what is owed, earned, or deserved. But its applications fall short of reality. It raises other questions. How does one person get another to give him what is “his due”? How are duties and claims entailed by natural rights enforced in practice? The notion of transforming justice attempts to answer these questions.

The Business Ethics of Evangelicals

Abstract:Understanding the evangelical framework for business ethics is important, since business evangelicals are well positioned to exercise considerable future influence. This article develops the context for understanding evangelical business ethics by examining their history, theology and culture. It then relates the findings to evangelical foundations for business ethics. The thesis is that business ethics, as practiced by those in the evangelical community, has developed inductively from a base of applied experience. As a result, emphases on piety, witnessing, tithing, and neighborliness, important foundations in the evangelical model for business ethics, have resulted in a multitude of applied ethical strategies. This operative ethics model is then evaluated, particularly in regarding to its limited focus on the fundamental purposes and structures of business. The article concludes with several recommended sources which can enrich the evangelical tradition of business ethics, suggesting many resources from the Reformed Christian tradition as well as other ideas from contemporary Protestant and Catholic thinkers.
