How Indonesia’s Cities Are Grappling with Plastic Waste: An Integrated Approach towards Sustainable Plastic Waste Management

In Indonesia, plastic constitutes the second largest component of municipal solid waste; however, 58% remains uncollected. Most plastic recycling depends on informal sectors, accounting for only 10% of the total, leaving the remainder to potentially harm the environment. This paper analyzes how cities in Indonesia have tackled their plastic waste problems from the perspective of the integrated sustainable waste management framework. This study focuses on plastic waste management (PWM) in three cities: Bandung, Yogyakarta, and Magelang. Data were collected from 41 semi-structured interviews, a plastic waste composition data analysis, and site visits. The research outcomes include a comprehensive analysis of stakeholder roles, plastic waste flow, plastic waste composition data, and various challenges in PWM. This study identifies three main stakeholders in collecting plastic wastes: the Department of Environment as the main local government body, community-based waste banks, and private waste management companies. Most recyclable plastic waste is recovered through waste banks and private collection services. In 2022, the predominant types of plastic waste in Bandung, Yogyakarta, and Magelang City were soft plastics, thick plastics, and hard plastics, respectively. The challenges for the PWM stem from various aspects in political, legal, and institutional; environmental; financial and technical; and socio-cultural spheres. Positive trends towards an integrated system are observed, although full integration has not yet been achieved. The research recommends a multi-stakeholder cooperative approach involving municipal authorities, waste banks, and private collectors, responsive to local conditions and emphasizing sustainability aspects throughout waste management stages for a sustainable resource recycling in developing countries.

Fostering second-life applications for electric vehicle batteries: A thorough exploration of barriers and solutions within the framework of sustainable energy and resource management

Electric vehicles (EVs) play a crucial role in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically focusing on Goal 7, which ensures access to Affordable and Clean Energy, and Goal 9, promoting advancements in Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. However, the growing stockpile of used EV Batteries (EVBs) presents challenges. These EVBs, however, hold potential for second-use applications, aligning with energy conversion, resource optimization, and sustainable energy systems. This study employs a rigorous multi-criteria approach to bridge the research-practice gap by systematically evaluates and prioritizes barriers hindering the widespread adoption of second-use EVBs. The study's overarching objectives are to overcome these barriers, aligning with broader sustainability goals, and to offer insights shaping policies addressing environmental, social, and economic impacts, in coherence with SDGs 8, 11, 12, and 13. The research unfolds through a three-phase approach involving literature reviews, field visits, and expert interviews for barrier identification, theoretical framework development through literature and Delphi studies, and prioritization using the Fuzzy Best-Worst Method (FBWM). Results indicate that addressing Cost and Technological Challenges is pivotal for successful second-use EVB adoption, with proposed solutions involving regulations, recycling, and awareness. The study underscores the circular economy perspective, connecting identified barriers to specific SDGs. The FBWM proves effective in prioritizing barriers, providing actionable insights for policymakers and stakeholders. This research contributes significantly to the existing literature by systematically evaluating second-use EVBs, addressing a crucial research gap, and offering valuable pathways for broad adoption.

Cultural Governance: A Participatory Approach Towards Sustainable Heritage Management

The study explores the heritage management framework established by the Bopiliao Historic Block in Taipei, Taiwan, looking primarily at the methodologies employed to address the competing tensions between stakeholders. Through creative economy and heritage tourism, paved the way for cultural governance to become a significant tool of sustainable heritage management. The central purpose of the study is to present a case analysis of the Bopiliao Historic Block in Taipei, Taiwan, and the district of Escolta in Manila, Philippines, to demonstrate how cultural governance can generate a sustainable community-based cultural heritage preservation framework. Using the research methods of archival research and participant observation, the study was able to identify factors from the success story of the Bopiliao Historic Block in Taipei, Taiwan that can serve as learning points for the Escolta district in Manila, Philippines, to consider. The findings of the study reveal that it requires more than just the active participation of the civil society to develop a sustainable heritage management framework. Instead, it requires support from all the key stakeholders, and though the levels of support may vary, the major deciding factor is the recognition and acceptance of the historic and cultural value of the community.

Industry 5.0: A new strategy framework for sustainability management and beyond

Industry 5.0 can be described as the integration of sustainability, resilience, and human-centricity into industrial value creation. A novel framework for shaping a manufacturing strategy for the future Industry 5.0 paradigm is proposed. The I5.0 strategy framework consists of two main elements: (1) a process model and (2) a system model. The process model is based on the Design and Operations (DesOps) methodology while the system model discusses a fluid physical system as well as a fluid cyber system as relevant components of an Industry 5.0 manufacturing system-of-systems. The research intends to contribute to the academic and industrial discussion towards forming a more practical guideline for managing the emerging I5.0 approaches and related technologies and to enable manufacturing companies to improve and maintain their competitiveness in a future I5.0 environment. Additionally, the authors aim to expand the knowledge foremost in the research field of strategy design and implementation by providing a decision-support framework for facilitating sustainable, resilient, and human-centric value creation.

Assessing the Legal Framework for Marine Protected Areas in High Seas: Challenges and Prospects under the UN BBNJ Agreement

Oceans, integral to a healthy global ecosystem, are protected partly through marine protected areas (MPAs). Despite numerous MPAs within national jurisdictions, the Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ) remain significantly neglected. Currently, most MPAs in ABNJ are governed by the OSPAR or CAMLR frameworks, which exhibit substantial deficiencies due to the fragmented state of international laws. United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), for instance, offers limited provisions for ABNJ. To address these legislative gaps, negotiations for the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) were initiated, leading to the successful adoption of the BBNJ Agreement in March 2023. This paper critically examines the existing regional treaties overseeing high-seas MPAs and explores the innovative approaches introduced by the BBNJ Agreement for the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity in ABNJ. The analysis concludes that the BBNJ Agreement provides a more comprehensive and sustainable management framework for high-seas MPAs, thus effectively overcoming the limitations inherent in regional treaties.

A Consumption‐Based Integrated Framework for Subnational Absolute Environmental Sustainability Management

AbstractAs human consumption expands, four environmental footprints (EFs) exceed the planetary boundaries (PBs) at the global scale. Managing absolute environmental sustainability (AES) based on PBs and EFs at the subnational level is crucial for policy insights. However, a consumption‐based AES management framework still needs to be developed. A framework, including five nexus environmental pressures embodied in the supply chain, was developed and tested in our study across China's 30 provinces to address this knowledge gap. The framework involved three steps: (a) assessing AES for five environmental pressures, (b) measuring environmental surplus and overshoot and composition of EFs, and (c) identifying priority areas for AES management. The results showed that only some provinces are sustainable for three impact‐oriented indicators, especially those with larger populations. Moreover, the embodied environmental pressure mainly flows from the Northwest to Southeast China. For two resource‐oriented indicators, over 74% of provinces are absolutely sustainable. From a nexus perspective, Shandong and Shanghai are identified as priorities for AES management due to their low IESI values of 0.32, 0.33, and 0.40, respectively, which means the worst performance. To improve their IESI, Shanghai needs to control the consumption of blue water‐intensive products, while Shandong and Henan should consume fewer CO2 emissions and N‐ and P‐loss‐intensive products. This framework can clarify subnational responsibilities of environmental overshoots, guide sustainable development, and be widely used at the subnational level in countries worldwide.

A static robust energy management approach for modelling low emission multi-vectored energy hub including emission markets and power-to-gas units

This paper develops a robust and sustainable energy management framework to model a multi-vectored energy hub (MVEH) system. A max-min-based static robust optimization model is developed to counter the uncertainties. Furthermore, a flexible energy demand management program, battery electric vehicles (BEVs), and compressed air battery storage (CABS) are integrated to enhance MVEH's flexibility. Hybrid power-to-X units (electrolyser, methanization reactor and fuel cells) are modelled to reduce green energy spillage and improve operational independence, including heat pumps. Moreover, the emission (carbon cap and trade) market along with carbon capture storage and utilization units (CCS–U), are incorporated to establish a low-emission multi-energy model. Simulation results demonstrate that with flexible resources and power-to-X units, MVEH reduces the operating energy cost by 46.4 % and improves the system independence by 19.06 %. Besides, CCS-U units produce 92 % less emission while increasing the energy cost by 5.1 %. However, MVEH gains the right to sell carbon credits under the emission market. Thus, the multi-vectored system's economical, reliable, and environmental viability are ensured. Finally, sensitivity analysis proves the robustness of the proposed framework against natural gas and carbon price fluctuations.

Evolving a conceptual framework for sustainable e-waste management: a consumer typology based on environmental behavior

PurposeThere is widespread consensus that unchecked growth of e-waste is a major challenge to global sustainability transition. Current research has failed to connect e-waste with principles of circularity and sustainability from the consumption perspective. This paper aims to answer the following questions: What kind of environmental behaviors (EBs) exist among consumers in relation to e-waste?; In what ways are these consumers different from and similar to each other based on their EBs in relation to e-waste?; How do consumers and their EBs contribute to sustainable waste management?Design/methodology/approachBased on primary data from an Indian sample of information and communication technology consumers, EBs relevant to e-waste management are identified. In the next stage, a behavior-based segmentation and profiling of consumers is performed.FindingsThe first phase of analysis produced eight distinct EBs which were then used in the next phase to obtain a consumer typology of three segments. The three consumer segments differed significantly with each other on general environmental behavior and awareness about e-waste.Research limitations/implicationsThe paper develops a comprehensive conceptual framework for studying the demand-side circularity transition for sustainable e-waste management.Practical implicationsFor business stakeholders, findings of the study and the proposed framework can inform behavior change interventions to customize offerings for different right consumer segments.Originality/valueThe paper adds new knowledge to the intersectional area of e-waste, consumer behavior and sustainability through the development of consumer typology and a conceptual framework.

Measurement of Work Progress Using a 3D Laser Scanner in a Structural Framework for Sustainable Construction Management

As interest in smart construction technology increases, various smart construction technologies are being used for sustainable construction management. Among these technologies, 3D laser scanning technology stands out for phenomena analysis and monitoring, with various applications being studied for construction management. This study aimed to identify structural members from point cloud data (PCD) obtained through 3D laser scanning and utilize them for the measurement of work progress in construction projects. The method for identifying members is to obtain location coordinate data from the BIM (Building Information Modeling) model of the project and identify the structural member in the PCD by comparing them with the member’s location coordinates from the PCD obtained with a 3D laser scanner. In this study, members such as columns, beams, girders, walls, and slabs among the structural members constructed at construction sites were identified through this process. For identified structural members completed at the actual construction site, the unit price and quantity were taken from the construction project’s bill of quantity (BOQ) database, and then the Earned Value (EV) was calculated. The results of the study suggest that the progress measurement process through BIM and 3D laser scanning, which was previously performed manually, can contribute to faster and more accurate work progress measurement. Ultimately, it is expected that efficient process management will be possible, contributing to the realization of sustainable construction management.

Evaluation of Traffic Accidents in the Province of Albay: Basis for Sustainable Traffic Management Framework

The traffic safety situation around the world is still not optimistic. Accidents occur due to a combination of factors and are rarely caused by a specific reason. Risk factors are a better explanation for why traffic accidents occur. This study determined the traffic accidents in the province of Albay. It identified the number of reported traffic accidents in the Province of Albay covering Calendar Year 2020 to 2022. It also determined the causes and risk factors of traffic accidents regarding driver's behaviors, road conditions, vehicle conditions, traffic signs, and traffic management. Moreover, it inferred a significant agreement among the ranks regarding the causes and risk factors of traffic accidents. It proposed a traffic management framework to prevent traffic accidents in the province of Albay. The respondents of this study are 60 personnel from the three CPS in Albay, 30 from the Local Government Unit, and 47 community, representing the riders and commuters in the Poblacion area. The study revealed a concerning prevalence of traffic accidents, underscoring a pressing public concern due to the high number of casualties and severity of outcomes. Despite this, road safety has not received sufficient attention, attributed to a lack of awareness regarding the problem's extent, associated costs, and effective interventions. Implementing a comprehensive traffic management framework involving collaboration among stakeholders is crucial for understanding and addressing the multifaceted causes of accidents, emphasizing the importance of community-wide initiatives and cooperation among various entities to enhance public awareness and promote responsible driving behavior.

Balancing people, planet, and profit in urban food waste management

Food waste is a complex problem and critical challenge for the sustainable development of circular economies, with interconnected social, environmental, and economic impacts. Supporting the identification of strategies that best minimise these impacts on people, planet and profit, this paper explores the dynamic impacts of food waste management options on the triple bottom lines of sustainable development in urban circular economies. We present a system dynamics model of the urban agri-food supply chain. This model simulates the fluxes of food and food waste throughout the supply chain, as well as their impacts on economy (i.e., costs and benefits for each sector and the broader economy), society (i.e., food insecurity) and environment (i.e., water, energy, and carbon footprints). Using Bristol city in the United Kingdom as a case-study, we evaluate the impacts of seven food waste management options (i.e., reduction, redistribution, animal feed, anaerobic digestion, composting, incineration, and landfilling). The results show that food waste reduction in consumer sectors (i.e., households and hospitality and food services) and redistribution in supply sectors (i.e., primary production and manufacture) offer the greatest benefits for the environment, society, and economy. For the retail sector, both reduction and redistribution options are highly favourable. Although these options can potentially have some adverse economic effects on the supply side due to a reduction in demand, their considerably high benefits make them high-reward, low-risk options. We thus conclude that food waste reduction and redistribution are the only options with a clear triple-win for people, planet and profit. This paper makes a significant contribution by introducing a robust quantitative model and a novel triple bottom line framework for sustainable food waste management in urban circular economies.

Evolutions of sustainable supply chain management in emerging economies: A literature review

The escalating demand for items and their consumption has exerted immense pressure on industrial production and supply chain systems, leading to adverse environmental and societal consequences. The rise in pollution rates and ecological disasters resulting from industrial production has prompted numerous scholars and industry specialists to focus on Sustainable Production and Consumption matters within the framework of Sustainable Supply Chain Management (SSCM). The interest in sustainable supply chain management has significantly increased in recent years, spanning both business and academic sectors. This phenomenon is seen in the growing prevalence of papers, conferences, specialized periodicals, and websites exclusively focused on the subject matter. Nevertheless, the importance of sustainable development in developing economies has only just started to be acknowledged. This literature review aims to assess existing research on sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) in developing nations while considering a worldwide perspective. This paper thoroughly examines the rapid expansion of the subject from an evolutionary perspective; aimed at comprehending the progression of sustainability concerns by examining patterns across different industries, and economies, and employing diverse approaches. An extensive thematic analysis was conducted on 56 selected publications published between 2010 and 2023, emphasizing the growth and significance of the knowledge base. The analysis is conducted utilizing a descriptive and content-oriented methodology. Subsequently, the results are presented, demonstrating an increasing interest in Sustainable Supply Chain Management (SSCM). Nevertheless, there is a conspicuous discrepancy in the extent of research carried out on this subject in emerging economies as opposed to industrialized ones. The findings indicate that the context in less developed countries plays a crucial role in carrying out empirical or case study research. Moreover, it is crucial to analyze how the integration of the three dimensions of sustainability impacts the efficiency of the supply chain, especially when considering the perspective of an emerging economy. Hence, the limitations of this investigation are delineated. Ultimately, it is crucial to do further research from multiple angles within the supply chain, encompassing collaboration, sustainable practices, innovation, sourcing, and supplier growth, with a special emphasis on the position and background of rising countries.

Wellness Programs, Perceived Organizational Support, and Their Influence on Organizational Performance: An Analysis Within the Framework of Sustainable Human Resource Management

The wellbeing of employee has become a challenge associated with working towards sustainable human resource management. This study, therefore, focuses on analyzing the role played by companies’ wellness practices as an important part of the social dimension of the “triple bottom line.” We hypothesize that these practices are linked to the employees’ perceived organizational support, and, simultaneously, to organizational performance, in addition to observing the mediating effects of job satisfaction and commitment. We tested the hypotheses by developing a questionnaire. The direct and mediating effects were analyzed using the Partial Least Square (PLS) structural equation technique. The results eventually obtained from 137 questionnaires provided evidence that wellness programs and perceived organizational support influence organizational performance, with mediating effects on job satisfaction and commitment. Redefining virtual water allocation in China based on economic welfare gains from environmental externalities

As water scarcity intensifies worldwide, the equitable allocation of water resources has emerged as a critical challenge. This research investigates the intricate issue of allocating responsibility for virtual water, a concept that quantifies the water embedded in traded commodities. In pursuit of an effective allocation mechanism, we refine an innovative accounting scheme grounded in economic welfare gains arising from externalities. The results show that water-stressed areas in China, such as Xinjiang, significantly contribute to exporting virtual water and is responsible for 70%–85% of the virtual water outflow. Furthermore, more than 50% of virtual water imported from water-rich regions is attributed to these water-stressed areas while their trade partners bear the rest water responsibility. In contrast, southern China's abundant water resources reduce dependence on virtual water trade, leading to fewer responsibilities. Globally, the allocated responsibility for the new accounting mechanism reaches up to 7.5 times higher than for production-based accounting (PBA) and consumption-based accounting (CBA). Our study also reveals that the degree of dependency (price elasticities) plays a pivotal role in shaping the allocation outcomes. The implications of this research are significant for establishing a transparent and accountable framework for sustainable water resource management and facilitating seamless transitions toward sustainability. As global water scarcity intensifies, the redefined responsibility accounting according to the economic welfare is indispensable in addressing immediate and long-term water-related challenges.

Vulnerability of multi-designated landscape and its connectivity toward conservation: A case study in Kampar Kerumutan, Riau, Indonesia

Indonesia is declared by the United Nations as a country that meets its conservation targets. However, Indonesia has not maximized the potential conservation of its territory, and the ecosystem is still threatened by anthropogenic activity, particularly due to small and large scales cultivation. Besides, the Government of Indonesia (GoI) built taskforces at the national level to avoid greenhouse gas emissions through FOLU Net Sink 2030 that could tackle climate and biodiversity crises. Therefore, identifying OECMs and creating a sustainable management framework by elaborating on the carbon pool and its dynamics across the Indonesian landscape is crucial to meet the targets of the global conservation agenda. Kampar Kerumutan Landscape (KKL) is one of the critical landscapes in Indonesia with high potential conservation for biodiversity and high intervention from various concessions. Our result showed that most KKLs were categorized as potential restoration areas. Industrial forest plantations (IFP) had the highest threat for conservation. To connect the potential highly conserved areas within KKL for species mobility, restoration projects (particularly in IFP, Protected Areas, and Non-managed areas) should be conducted to achieve human and nature balance in the KKL.

A resilience-based robustness evaluation framework for sustainable urban flood management under uncertainty.

Urban drainage systems (UDSs) may experience failure encountering uncertain future conditions. These uncertainties arise from internal and external threats such as sedimentation, blockage, and climate change. In this paper, a new resilience-based framework is proposed to assess the robustness of urban flood management strategies under some distinct future scenarios. The robustness values of flood management strategies are evaluated by considering reliability, resiliency, and socio-ecological resilience criteria. The socio-ecologic resilience criteria are proposed considering the seven principles of building resilience proposed by Biggs et al. (2012). The evidential reasoning (ER) approach and the regret theory are utilized to calculate the total robustness of the flood management strategies. In this framework, the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithms III (NSGA-III) optimization model and the storm water management model(SWMM) simulation model are linked and run to quantify the criteria. The novelty of this paper lies in presenting a new framework to increase the sustainability and resilience of cities against floods considering the deep uncertainties in the main economic, social, and hydrological factors. This methodology provides policies for redesigning and sustainable operation of urban infrastructures to deal with floods. To evaluate the applicability and efficiency of the framework, it is applied to the East drainage catchment of the Tehran metropolitan area in Iran. The results show that real-time operation of existing flood detention reservoirs, along with implementing five new relief tunnels with a construction cost of 37.1 million dollars, is the most robust non-dominated strategy for flood management in the study area. Comparing the results of the proposed framework with those of a traditional framework shows that it can increase the robustness value by about 40% with the same implementation cost.

Developing a resilient and sustainable non-linear closed-loop supply chain management framework for the automotive sector industry using a gaussian fuzzy optimization based non-linear model predictive control approach

ABSTRACT Efforts to merge sustainability and resilience within the automotive industry’s supply chain models have proven challenging. This paper proposes a novel non-linear closed-loop supply chain management framework tailored to the tire industry supply chain from the automotive sector to address the issue of exploring interrelationships. Framework employs trapezoidal linguistic cubic fuzzy Z-score technique for order of preference by similarity to the ideal solution ranking approach to prioritize resilience strategies to maintain sustainability performance during sudden disturbances. Furthermore, Gaussian fuzzy optimization-based non-linear model predictive control acts as a feedback controller to integrate sustainability and resilience by providing a stable output based on the objective function related to sustainability dimensions. An experimental study assesses the impact of resilience strategies on total supply chain costs, highlighting significant cost savings. Adopting strategies like multiple sourcing, information sharing, and improved design quality of the supply chain keeps total expected costs optimal for various sustainability levels.
